The Nantucket Skiff that Came Full Circle

Boating is in the hearts and souls of many Nantucketers. For centuries here, traveling the seas was a way of life as well as a livelihood. Island lore has many stories of the exploits of sailors and the fates of the vessels they sailed. Only a few are as heartwarming as the journey of a skiff built by an island father with his son, that has returned decades later to the family of the man who crafted it .

The story begins a little more than forty years ago, when skilled builder, woodworker, and fourth-generation Nantucketer Bruce Killen and his young son David embarked on a project to build a skiff. A gifted craftsman known for his historic restoration, fine custom work, and attention to detail, Killen built boats in his spare time. According to his widow, Pamela, “Bruce built a lot of skiffs: it was a hobby. He’d build them and then give them away or sell them... I remember him in his shop, with blues music going, dancing around and building his boats,” she reminisced. “He really enjoyed building them.”

“This was the second of three flat-bottom skiffs that were designed and built by Bruce,” his son David added. “This skiff was built in Bruce’s shop on Cliff Road, back when there was a raised rear portion partitioned by an oiled tarp. In watching the design and construction of any of Bruce’s boatwork back then, the term ‘part art, part science’ comes to mind.”

Skiffs are simple and reliable: small open boats with usually just an outboard

Add to Your Nantucket Collection

Comfortable and durable, with simple, modern designs that suit all ages, Native Shoes have become a favorite footwear for summers on Nantucket. Ideal for island life—boating, fishing, going to the beach, and outfitting kids for summer camp—these shoes are constructed with materials that are lightweight, soft, and flexible, and the shoes don’t absorb water or odors. They are hand-washable and come in a wide range of sizes, colors, and styles, including walking shoes, sandals, slip-on mules, and even a hiking-style shoe with great grip for slushy weather. The Native shop at 40 Straight Wharf even has an exclusive Nantucket Collection: designs that are available nowhere else.

This Sunday morning, August 18 from 9 to 10 am, Retail Manager Beth LloydThomas and her staff from Native will be on the beach at Brant Point during the Rainbow Parade and the Opera House Cup’s Harbor Start. From their set-up there, they will hold a raffle for Native Shoe prizes. This last festive day of Nantucket’s annual Race Week is the ideal place for Native to host this event: Native Shoes is a sponsor of Nantucket Community Sailing (NCS), the beneficiary of Nantucket Race Week and the Opera House Cup. Their various involvements help support NCS and the organization’s scholarship efforts, as well as highlight the perfect shoe for sailing and water activities. NCS, since their founding in 1994, has taught 20,000 children to sail and granted over $1M in sailing scholarships.

All in the Family

When the stars align favorably and opportunity presents itself, an entrepreneurial spirit will take the leap. In 2019, island residents Nicole and Rupert Campbell leaped—now, five years later, they are known for their awardwinning small batch craft cannabis products at The Green Lady Dispensary.

“My husband and I have been coming to the island forever (I’ve been coming here since I was 16). We purchased a house here many years ago. When the legalization of cannabis was just starting, first medical then recreational...we had a house, we had ties to the island, it seemed like a great opportunity,” Nicole explained. “We couldn’t be happier that we decided to do this on Nantucket.”

The Campbell’s Green Lady Dispensary was the first to open on Nantucket (it’s now one of two), and it was the first minority and women-owned cannabis company to open in Massachusetts. Their whole family is involved in the business: Corbet, Rupert and Nicole’s oldest daughter, runs the Nantucket dispensary and Cleantha is general manager of new location on Beacon Street in Newton, MA, opened last year.

They describe their mission as to provide high-quality and naturally cultivated cannabis products to adult residents and vacationers in a safe, welcoming environment. They and their staff work hard to introduce new consumers to the positive uses of cannabis. Their blog at thegreenladydispensary.com has a wealth of information, and they have started a YouTube series @TheGreenLadyDispensary to help educate the public. The Green Lady’s “budtenders” are well-versed in the dispensary’s wide selection of cannabis strains, mixtures, and products.

The Campbell family and their staff at both locations are dedicated to helping their customers. “We love getting to know the medical patients and being able to help them. We just came out with Night Cap Gummies to assist with sleep—THC continued on page 24

The “Cheese Touch”

One of my favorite books to read with my daughters way back in once upon a time land was Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Greg Heffley. The Wimpy Kid books are laugh-out-loud funny and completely relatable. The first book in the series introduced me to the dreaded “Cheese Touch,” a curse of sorts that is to be avoided at all costs. I fully understood that the cheese touch exists in reality. Sometimes the dice go cold. Sometimes they simply freeze up, even in a hot August on our beautiful island of Nantucket.

Man oh man, there’s been some fishing slumps happening on our beaches in the past week or so. The bluefish have been spending their time in the deeper waters. The bonito, in a strange plot twist, have been around in greater numbers than I’ve ever seen—go figure! It’s made for some challenging days for us surfcasting types, let me tell ya. Challenging in a “cheese touch” sort of way.

Slumps are funny things. You never know that a slump has started. Slumps sneak up on you. They’re relatively tough to quantify unless you’re a baseball player. Those poor baseball guys have analytics geeks swarming around them nonstop, examining everything that they do. I imagine that news of one’s slump is being tweeted out before the newly-minted slumpee can make his way back to the dugout after grounding out for the third time in a game. And once you think that you’re in a slump, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A couple of charters in a row with no fish had me pretty down. I always want my clients to catch fish. Hey, I always want to catch fish!! But it doesn’t always happen. And two consecutive no-fish days sounds mighty like a slump. Or at least a mild cheese touch. Ouch!

Sadaharu Oh was the greatest home run hitter in the history of baseball. During his career, Sadaharu hit 868 home runs. He had a career batting average of .301. He won back-to-back Japan League triple crowns in 1973 and 1974. I read his autobiography when I was a kid. I remember him discussing slumps and how he got out of them. Mr. Oh talked about one time when he had been sucking mightily for an extended stretch. All of those wonderful self-doubting thoughts

A Wasted Life

So, we were stuck. Behind me, a jeep settled, with a driver and a beach chair. In front of me, a cable truck sighed and shuddered.

I had fallen into this place through inattention and habit. Normally, at this point in the summer, I would have taken a short cut that would have sped me to my end. I might have headed up an alley, snuck wrong way down a one-way street, and rolled across a yard on my business. But as the sun had just come out, Kiki Dee had returned to the radio after fifty years, and my attention had drifted from what was necessary and important, the afternoon slipped me onto Quaker Lane.

Quaker Lane cuts from Milk Street to the Madaket Road. On the town side of the road, the houses perched on a line, facing the western sky and the sunset, on the other, the grass rolled in waves and hills. On this afternoon when I felt the music in me (thanks, Kiki) and we moved foot by foot, the grass invited us in.

As the poet Robert Lowell says, “This is the end of the whaleroad and the whale.” Beneath the waves of grass are the remains of thousands of Quakers, laid in unmarked graves, and bearing silent witness. Many were whalers, many made their business from the whale and all had died. You may have beach chairs in the back of your jeep, trash in the bed of your truck, or ladders on the top of your van. Every traffic jam ends here.

We rolled forward another few feet.

I was on my way to a rental house. The renters had arrived, settled in, visited Dionis Beach, and used the hose to wash the toes and toys off. Somehow, they couldn’t turn the hose off. So they left it running into the pool and called me.

I suspect my colleagues in front of me were burning unleaded fuel for a similar mission. Someone had static on their TV, someone couldn’t find Turner Classic Movies anymore, or someone had cut a wire when putting in a hot tub. A computer sent a message for an urgent call and here they were, moving a foot at a time for a cable emergency in August.

Nantucket’s Invasive Plant Species Committee

Over the past two decades there has been a growing problem on-island as more and more non-native invasive plants (and other species) establish and dominate. Some species new to our region don’t cause harm, establishing in small populations without changing local ecology. However, it is the domineering plants that cause economic, ecological, or harm to human health that are managed. For a place which prides itself on its conservation and biodiversity, protecting these resources is of vital importance.

The Nantucket Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) is a standing committee of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative. The members consist of people and organizations interested in non-native invasive species issues. Members include people from all the various conservation groups on-island, as well as professionals in the horticultural and landscape trade, gardeners, and business owners. The main facets of the committee are education, eradication, and early detection, not necessarily in that order. As the current co-Chair of IPSC (since 2014), I am proud of all that this committee has accomplished.

The IPSC has been around since the early 2000s. At that time, a lot of effort went into educating about non-native species and the harm some of them can do to the Nantucket biodiversity. In the past 20 years, the species of concern may have changed, but a lot of the messaging is the same. The highest priority is to protect, preserve, and promote native biodiversity. For the non-native species, documenting occurrences, eradicating where possible using the EDRR method: early detection and rapid response. For those species where “rapid response” isn’t really possible, the IPSC has been triaging locations around the island to prevent spread of some populations.

Sometimes the work of invasive species management seems daunting—there is almost too much to accomplish anything. But in the years since IPSC has started, there has been great progress and examples of where the IPSC has been effective. One of the first examples is from 2006, when the IPSC was tasked with Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) removal at the Commons, the green area across the parking lot from Nantucket Office Products. At that time, Japanese knotweed was growing right up to the edge of the parking lot. In fact, shoots were pushing up through the asphalt!

The Nantucket Skiff

from page 3

engine and seats, with room for two or three. They’re good for teaching boating skills, and it was in Bruce’s skiffs that he taught his sons boating. “I learned drive outboard with a tiller extension in these boats. I also improved my rowing and problem-solving skills when the outboard failed. Adventuring on small boats, having things go wrong, and having to figure out how to problem-solve to get home is a pretty good foundational skill set for anyone,” said David.

“Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s on Nantucket was a gift. The maritime history of our community was all around us—from the shipwrecks on the north side of Coatue that became visible after a winter Nor'Easter, to the active fishing and merchant marine community, to the owners of wooden sailboats whose preservation led to events like the Opera House Cup. I’ve been a lifelong member of the maritime and sailing community both on Nantucket and in the larger world. My son Owen is 8 years old, and I’ve been ‘showing him the ropes’ as well.”

For a few years, the skiff served the father and son duo faithfully. It was even used a few winters to hold the Christmas tree floating off Easy Street in the Killen family’s beloved tradition that was started by Bruce Killen’s father, Sidney. “Bruce and David would go out, chop down a tree and put it in the boat,” Pam recounted. Bruce decorated it, and Ginger Andrews used to supply the electricity.”

As time passed, however, the skiff's journey took a new turn.

In 1982, Nantucket artist G.S. Hill and his wife Judi bought a 12-foot skiff that they used to travel around island waters and to get from their home to their gallery, which was then on Old South Wharf. “We bought it from Byron Coffin: it had been the tender to the Sally Bramble... but it needed help. For three years in a row, I would give it to Bruce Killen to repair over the winter,” Greg Hill explained. “After three years, Bruce said ‘this cannot be fixed any more: would you like to buy my boat’?”

And so Greg and Judi did.

“The craftsmanship was beautiful—we used to get a lot of compliments on the boat—Bruce used Nantucket colors: red bottom, clear wood, and gray.”

During the years that the G.S. Hill Gallery was on Old South Wharf, the Hill’s had a mooring between the cottages. “I’d putter around the harbor in it and paint and sketch...I used to do a lot of painting from it.” Greg became a common sight around Nantucket, locals recognizing the skiff and the artist driving it. “One day,” Judi Hill added, “Tom Dickson stopped by and said ‘Hey Judi, I just saw Greg in his office.’” The name stuck, and from that day onward, “Greg’s Office” is what they called the skiff.

For years the skiff was a part of Hill’s creative process. G.S. Hill is known for his evocative artwork that captures the essence of island life, and if you look closely, Greg’s Office appears in a number of his paintings and sketches.

When the G.S. Hill Gallery moved to Straight Wharf, the Hills could no longer moor it by the gallery, so they moored the boat in Polpis Harbor. “From Polpis Harbor, I’d drive it over to Straight Wharf to pick Judi up from work,” Greg commented. The couple used the skiff on their rare days off to travel to little-known, serene beaches, where they could unwind, picnic, and savor the quiet beauty of Nantucket. “We used to take it out to Polpis Harbor where it is real narrow—even on the busiest days, we’d be the only ones there, and we could watch the sailboats,” Judi added.

But time has a way of bringing change, and recently Hill decided it was time to part with Greg’s Office. The decision was bittersweet: “we’d had so much fun with it for so many years, but sometimes it’s just time...”

Judi took to social media to list the boat for sale, sharing a photo and a heartfelt ad. In a cinematic twist, a response came through almost immediately: This is Pam Killen, and I want to buy the boat. “I swear, it took less than a minute to sell it,” Judi commented.

Pamela and her son David had not realized Greg and Judi Hill had this skiff that Bruce Killen had built. “I’m pleased that they did [have the skiff]—they did an amazing job preserving it,” David said. Both Pam and David are excited that the skiff has returned to the family. Pam plans to enjoy the skiff with her three grandchildren: ages 4, 7, and 8. “I’m going to teach my son and nephews how to drive an outboard with a tiller extension,” David added.

Today, the skiff is back with the family who built it, a full circle of memories, craftsmanship, and shared history. It stands as a tribute to the bond between a father and son, the inspiration of an artist, and the enduring value of craftsmanship. “I’ve always associated wooden boatbuilding with the highest form of woodwork and artistry,” commented David Killen. “The interconnection between wooden boatbuilding on Nantucket and the local community of visual artists created a warm and beautiful sense of place and community. I hope we can all take a minute to remember where we came from and be grateful for the experience.”

In the end, this handcrafted skiff is more than just a vessel. It’s a piece of history, a link between generations, and a symbol of how things made with love can find their way back to where they belong.

from page 7

started to run through his head (and I thought that only musicians got those!). Finally, the mighty slugger Sadaharu sought out the advice of a wise old teammate, who promptly took our hero out for a night on the town. Sadaharu got knee-walking drunk on sake, fell into his apartment and slept on the floor. He showed up at the park late for the next day’s afternoon game, still fuzzy from the night before. He staggered up to the plate, smashed a couple of taters and POOF —the monkey on his back was gone. Lots of life lessons there for a kid to take in, don’t you think?

I’ve been sober for more than 37 years, so I don’t think the sake drinking route is the right way for me. So what do I do when the cheese touch has me in its grasp? Well, if what I’m doing isn’t working, I try to change things up. Pretty simple, right? As I’ve learned, I can only control what I can control. The wind is going to do what it wants. Tropical storms are going to stop by to say “hello.” In some ways, a good storm can shuffle the deck and get the fish moving again. Thus, a big wind shift earlier this week was oddly welcoming. Would it get the bluefish moving closer to shore? Only time would tell.

I had an early morning charter scheduled on Thursday, August 8 with the father-and-son team of David Marrin Sr. and Jr. David Jr. and his wife were on-island for a couple of weeks with their newborn son, Rucker, and his folks came up to spend some time with their new grandson. Positive vibes, right? I drove the Wauwinet Road with a happy mindset, trying not to dwell on the past couple of trips. And then BAM! A deer came bounding out of the bushes, right in front of me. The poor creature never had a chance. Nor did I, for that matter. I had never struck a deer before, and I felt absolutely terrible. The cheese touch had reared its ugly head again before a single cast was thrown.

The Marrin crew were a welcome relief to me, their extremely shaken up fishing guide. I enjoyed getting to meet them and to talk about things other than the freshly diminished deer population. Both men were experienced fishers. The weather was ok, with very gusty east-southeast winds. We got right at it, looking for fish. We tried a variety of spots up, down, and all around both sides of the peninsula of Great Point. Nothing. Not a hit. Oh yeah, the cheese touch was flexing on me big time.

The Marrins had no interest in getting caught up in the evil fromage that was afflicting me, however. They kept on casting. We had a couple of hits that were spaced out just far enough to keep our collective spirits up. Finally I heard David Sr. say the magic words: “I’m on!” I watched as the elder Mr. Marrin skillfully fought and landed a beautiful bonito.

I asked David Jr. what his dad thought about the experience. He told me, “This was their first time on Nantucket. They loved it. He loved it! As a predominately (largemouth) bass fisherman, he wasn’t prepared for the fight but thought it was awesome. Such a powerful fish, considering the size!”

David Jr. told me by text that he could get used to the way we fish up here. “I thought it was such a cool way to fish. I can’t wait to do it again. Our surf fishing in VA / MD is mostly bottom fishing, which isn’t that fun imho. Also, the scenery was incredible, never fished anywhere like that. Unreal natural beauty!”

Could this successful trip be the start of something good? Only time would tell. I had a trip scheduled the next day with Liz Sullivan and her son, Rivers. Liz had told me in her original message that the 8-year-old Rivers loves to fish. Hmmmm, I thought, that’s a real young age for surfcasting. But I’ve seen some 8-year-old fishers who could really cast. I explained my concerns about both the required skills and conditions (still a big, honking Debby-inspired wind). Liz was so positive about her son that I agreed that we’d get out there and see how Rivers would fare.

When I got my first look at Rivers, I began to comprehend why Liz had such confidence. This awesome little guy is as determined as any adult that I’ve ever met! He looked me right in the eyes and shook my hand. Wow. It was clear that he’d been brought up right. Rivers was wearing a United States Marine Corps. hat. I asked him about it. He told me, “It’s my dad’s hat. He graduated from the Naval Academy and served in the Marine Corps.”

Young Rivers glowed with pride as he told me about his father, Wilson Sullivan. Liz filled in some blanks for me, telling me that Wilson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2002. He served as a Marine Corps. Officer and reconnaissance platoon commander until he left active duty in 2007. Wilson was back at work in Charlotte, NC, as Liz and Rivers took an extended vacation with Liz’s parents, Kathy and David Cheek, at their house in Siasconset. Although I did not have the honor of meeting Wilson, the love that Rivers had for his dad told me everything about this man.

Liz, her mother Kathy, Rivers, and I discussed the task at hand. I told them that we would have to fish into a wind that was now blowing somewhere around 30 knots. It would be a tall order for me, never mind a little dude who’s heading into the third grade. Rivers was up to the challenge. We got down to business.

It took some effort but I was soon able to hook a fish. I passed my rod to Rivers who battled the surf and the fight of a medium sized bluefish. It was fantastic to see the joy on his face as Rivers gave me his fishing pliers to remove the hook. We released that fish and shortly thereafter replayed the scene with a second bluefish. Rivers was determined to catch his own fish so that he could enter the August Blues tournament, but the wind was just a bit too much for him. Still, we had two fish on the beach and the smell of cheese had faded from stinky limburger to a mild cheddar.

I was very impressed with everything about young Rivers. That feeling only grew when Kathy, his grandmother, told me that Rivers had broken his collarbone a couple of months earlier. Clearly, this was not the kind of guy who was going to let little things like broken bones slow him down. “I’m going to join the Marines one day and fly the F-22 Raptor. I practice all the time on a flight simulator!”

Rivers, you have the spirit, smarts, and determination to do anything that you want to do. And an awesome head of hair! Come back and fish with me any time—you’re a fine edition to my ever-growing team of amazing young fishers. And thanks so much for helping me get past the cheese touch!

A Wasted Life

Behind me, she had one beach chair. It stood up in the back seat, as if it had just been tossed there. She wore sunglasses, a red baseball cap, and youth in its bursting abundance. Her jeep dated back to a time before children when sand on the floor and rainwater in the cupholders wasn’t a problem that needed to be solved. There were ten feet and half a life time between the two of us.

I have wasted my life.

Of the time that I have left on this side of the road, too much of it has been spent with one foot on the brake. One can allow, and even excuse, the time invested in picking up children from swimming practice or from work. However, the time expensed at five miles an hour earns nothing but the silent grins of the Quakers. What part of my wild and precious life is worth the time creeping along this road in order to turn off a hose

I have spent too much time waiting. I have sent good money chasing after bad staring at a phone, or a door, or a computer screen when hope over-ripened, rotted, and fell. The minutes, the hours, the days, and months signed off and expensed so that a dream does not become a fear. When I spent so much of that time, I wound up waiting not for her or for them, but for me. I waited to finally figure out that I wasn’t that guy, didn’t want to meet that guy, and needed to figure out who really was wearing my underwear today and tomorrow.

We rolled forward five feet.

The phone lit up. I no longer have the ringer on. At the moment, none of the people I love are in the army, in the hospital, or in the air. Nobody, in particular anybody with a hose in a pool, requires my attention as I am stuck next to the green grass of the Quakers. I had traded my time already, I had no need to trade any more, least of all when I was already stuck rolling forward.

After a complicated dance around Caton Circle, I drove out the Madaket Road, missed one turn, missed another, and lost both the Jeep and the Cable truck. Then, I drove past the last possible turn I could have taken to remain in the good graces of the guest, the homeowner, and my phone. Instead, like a rabbit, I darted between the bushes and headed into the deep dark of Barrett Farm Road.

I assume they figured out how to fix the hose.

After the first few houses, the bushes and trees claim the road, as do the puddles, the sand, and the odd root. But within a few minutes, I was deep into an island that didn’t have garden hoses, hydrangea bushes, or cell service. Time could no longer be measured in money. The road turned once, twice, thrice, and pulled up next to a pond.

I turned the car off.

Overhead, the last of the storm clouds tumbled over themselves eastward, leaving the deep cerulean blue to settle in from the west. Far above, circling, the wide wings of an osprey held the sky, sliding down the air, before ascending on the drafts. She may have seen me, she may not have—I merited no more than a tick of her neck as she soared. Against the horizon, the surf poked up, then hid behind a barrier beach. The slow rumble of the breakers rolled up over the pond, washed over me, and continued into scrub oak and pine. The beach grass, brown in the August sun, sang in an unknowable tongue as it waved down to the lapping blue of the pond. The air held salt and sun and pine and a hidden flower beyond a name. As time slipped, the shadows lengthened.

Seconds became hours became lifetimes and, finally, became sand.

I have wasted my life.

love about our special island...a design that expresses the joy and uniqueness of the island,” Beth explained. “I had expressed to our design team that the Rainbow Fleet and sailing holds a very special place in our island’s DNA. To me, the Rainbow Fleet and sailing here in general has always held a special place in my heart— sunny, warm summer days, sand in your feet, sailing in the harbor around Brant Point and Coatue, hearing the ferry horn, cool winds against your face, and spending time with friends and family. We'll be at the Rainbow Fleet Regatta Sunday and will raffle off Native Shoes for Race Week for the community,” she added.

For 2024, Native’s special shoe is the Nantucket Sail Print. This collectible shoe is exclusively available at Native’s store on Straight Wharf; it is not available at nativeshoes.com. Every Nantucket Collection shoe has a special “license plate’ on the back of the shoe that says ACK!

“As they are unique and special to Nantucket, we produce only a limited quantity of each pattern each season (designing something new each year) so once they are sold out, they are gone. We have families that come back year after year and make it a tradition to purchase new pairs to add to their collections (as the shoe lasts forever). Often, they hop straight off the Hy-Line ferry at the start of their vacation and come into the shop.”

Like all shoes made by Native, the Nantucket Collection shoes are lightweight, waterproof, great for an active lifestyle, and can be worn year-round. “They’re comfortable for adults and kids: a surgeon just came in yesterday with his whole crew to get him and his family new pairs. He’s been collecting since we opened in 2018, and he wears them on the surgical floor.”

Past designs in Native Shoes’ Nantucket Collection include a nautical flag spelling ACK, The Nantucket Whale in regatta blue, and the Nantucket Whale Tails in Ocean Waves. Though these shoes have become a very exclusive mark of someone who lives on or has visited Nantucket Island, there are a very few pairs from some past year’s designs in the shop on Straight Wharf. Once they sell out, the special designs are retired, so don’t delay in getting your Nantucket Collection Native Shoes!

Weed Warriors

With funding from the partners that owned the area, the IPSC undertook removing first the above-ground materials and then working with contractors to excavate the giant root balls and other below-ground plant materials. It was a huge task! But even 18 years on the results are still good. There is still some knotweed along the wetland edge, but the grass and parking area are devoid of knotweed. It can now be maintained with regular mowing, and the parking lot isn’t in danger of being consumed by knotweed. You can still see the educational signage along Pleasant Street that was installed to discuss the project.

Aside from education, one of the main activities for the IPSC as a group has been our weekly weed pulls that occur during the spring and summer months. These weekly pulling events focus on one species at a time and bring together volunteers, interns, and staff from various conservation and environmental education organizations. It’s an opportunity to have a group focus on one area (many hands make light work), but it’s also an opportunity to get together once a week and catch up or meet new people interested in these topics while contributing to native plant diversity!

In the spring months, the IPSC focuses on garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). As an herbaceous biennial, this plant is easy to pull and grows in patchy populations around the island. And while it may seem innocuous, it can still form a monoculture dominating the area in which it establishes. You can read the full information sheet from IPSC at nantucketbiodiversity.org/s/Garlic-Mustard-Info-Sheet.pdf.

As spring turns to summer, we switch from garlic mustard to Spotted Knapweed (Centaurea stoebe), which, I think, has been our greatest success. Spotted knapweed is an herbaceous plant that grows up to about two feet on Nantucket and looks something like a thistle but without the spikes. It small, purple flower heads this time of year with the bracts at the base of the flower marked with dark, upside-down “V,” giving them a spotted appearance. Knapweed grows in disturbed areas like roadsides and bike paths. However, it is also known as a grassland invader. In the western states it is a huge ecological and economic problem invading rangelands. Here on Nantucket, we focus on this species to keep it out of our grasslands. The Nantucket sandplain grasslands are a priority habitat locally and at the state and federal levels. They are host to numerous rare and endangered species, so a grassland invader is of particular concern.

With that threat in mind, our weed pulls start concentrating on knapweed when

continued on page 23

those plants begin to flower (generally mid-July) and continue late into August. You may have seen us out on the roadways and bike paths this summer, weed tools and contractor bags in hand. Spotted knapweed is allelopathic, which means it exudes a chemical to compete against surrounding plants in the soil. That also means, grabbing it over and over with your hands can cause skin irritation. So, pulling this plant requires wearing gloves. Knapweed has a long taproot, hence the specialized weed tool affectionately known as a “teletubbie” for its unique shape

Even though we still pull this plant every year, we are making great progress. In the early years of pulling, the IPSC regularly spent time along the Madaket Road bike path near Sanford Farm. After about five years of pulling there, the remaining plants were few enough that the Nantucket Conservation Foundation staff was able to maintain the location in-house. Similarly, the area of Heller Way, near Cisco Beach, and the roads leading to the beach have been surveyed and pulled of spotted knapweed for more than a decade. The IPSC used to spend at least three consecutive weeks there with an army of 8-10 weeders. This year, for the first time, we surveyed the entire area to the end of Hummock Pond Road in just one morning. And we came up with just one bag of spotted knapweed. I found myself trying to convince the volunteers who showed up that day that it was actually a problem here historically. Not finding it in great numbers was a huge success and should be celebrated!

So what if it doesn’t grow along the roads and bike paths anymore? Why spend our energies there? Our goal, at IPSC, is to pull where we can make an effective difference. These roadways and paths are leading to some of our most high-quality sandplain grassland habitats. In the case of Heller Way, that is the Smooth Hummocks area owned by the Nantucket Land Bank. In some years, when the amount of spotted knapweed has ex-

ceeded our ability to effectively manage it, the IPSC has worked with the Nantucket DPW to mow the road edges prior to the knapweed setting seed. Mowing won’t kill the plant, but mowing at the right time can prevent seeding or at least reduce the capacity.

This summer, our IPSC team has focused the past three weeks at the Boulevard and Lover’s Lane area. The knapweed that has established there was extremely dense in some spots. Our team did an amazing job and, hopefully, that means that in 2025 the job will be that much smaller. One benefit of pulling along a highly popular bike path is that we get a chance to talk to people about what we’re doing. People, I think, generally assume we are picking up trash until they see our weird weed tools. Once we point out the plant in question, some say they’ve seen it and now will remove it from their yards. As the saying goes, “spread the word, not the weed.”

So how can you help in the fight against spotted knapweed (or invasive plants in general)? You can join us for any weed pull. Reach out to Sarah Bois, co-chair of the IPSC, at stbois@llnf.org to be added to our pull list. You’ll receive the location each week through the end of August. You can also focus your attention to your own yard and remove and invasive plants you find there, especially spotted knapweed.

From Lucy Leske, active IPSC founding member and former co-chair, “I am really pleased with the work that the IPSC has done over the years, especially around education and collaboration with other organizations to manage populations of invasive plants. I wish we had made more progress, but it really is an uphill battle. It does appear, however, that the knapweed is really knocked back in sensitive areas, and we CAN make progress with knotweed if we put muscle behind it. Loosestrife and other invasive are no longer available for sale in our nurseries. So I feel it has been worthwhile, and we shouldn't stop!”

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

As Nantucket’s public library, the NANTUCKET ATHENEUM has a long history of providing services and programs to the island’s year-round and summer residents. During the library’s 183 years of service, a central part of its mission has been to bring to the island distinguished lecturers, including our earliest speakers – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Frederick Douglass. In accordance with this long-standing tradition, the Geschke Lecture Series was created as a result of a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge grant awarded to the Atheneum in 2003, a significant donation from the Geschke Foundation, and the ongoing support of many library donors. The Geschke Lecture Series has brought speakers to Nantucket to inform and challenge our audiences with current critical ideas and issues.
