Inspiration Expressed
by Suzanne Daub
This Friday, August 23, the Gallery at Four India on Nantucket is hosting a remarkable art show that celebrates both familial ties and artistic innovation. The gallery will feature the works of mother and son, Joanna Kane and Geddes Jones, in a captivating exhibition entitled Lineage, on display through September 2. This marks the first time Kane and Jones have collaborated on an art show featuring just the two of them, and their combined talents promise a unique and vibrant experience.
Joanna Kane, a celebrated painter who has long called Nantucket Island home, will be showcasing her colorful abstracts. Her work celebrates inspiration and is characterized by vivid hues and dynamic forms. Each piece invites viewers into a world where color and shape dance in a joyful, almost symphonic display. Her artistry is a testament to the power of abstraction to convey emotion and energy, and her local presence adds a layer of personal significance to her work.
once in the timeless hours of painting. It is my goal through multiple layers of paint, patterns, shapes, and colors to create a backdrop active enough to hold the viewer while the abstract drama unfolds.”
Geddes Jones brings an artistry distinguished by his diverse talents and dynamic style to this gallery show. Although Geddes was born and raised on Nantucket, he now lives in New York, where he balances his time between drawing, painting, and his work as a respected tattoo artist. Known for his artistic precision in tattooing, Geddes’s paintings contrast with the meticulous nature of his tattoo work: his paintings are characterized by a free-flowing style full of color and movement. The energy in Geddes’s work reflects his ability to channel fluidity and spontaneity, resulting in pieces that are vibrant and emotive. Kane refers to her son’s fine art work as “windy.”
As she once stated: “painting stimulates the hider, the seeker, and finder in me. I am all three at
Joanna Kane grew up in Connecticut and studied drawing and painting at the Art Institute in Kansas City. She first came to Nantucket 40 years ago to help
It’s Still Summer
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation
I’ve been trying to think about how to capture this mid- to late-August feeling. It’s a bit like summer is winding down, but I know that the warm weather and beach days will continue well into September. Maybe it’s that the onslaught of back-to-school advertisements and school emails that has me thinking about fall. It surely isn’t the air. There is no crisp, clear September scent just yet. We’re still in the hazy warm days of August. Is there a name for late summer? How about Still Summer. Like, “hello, it’s still summer.”
August…for me, and I suspect others, this is the month that is more “in like a lion and out like a lamb” than March ever is. It starts peak summer, when everything is intense: the traffic, the heat, crowds in the Stop & Shop, beach traffic, and (for those of us not on vacation) work is at a fever pitch. And there are so many wonderful events and lectures to go to! Your calendar could be packed every evening, and it often is. Even out in nature it is peak growing season, peak pollinator activity, bird hatchlings everywhere. On both the natural and human side, things I relish in early summer become almost too much by August. Maybe it’s our patience which is waning?
In order to quell my impatience with August and relish the rest of summer, I am proposing a “still summer” anthem of sorts. Maybe it’s more of a mantra. What do we love about this time of year? What can we celebrate these last few weeks of August as we
dream of the calmer days of fall ahead?
It is my nature to be excited by plants. So, I am most looking forward to my favorite wildflower show of late August/early September. Many of the aster species of Nantucket (the daisy-like flowers of multiple habitats) come into bloom this time of year. The Aster family is a huge, diverse group of plants, including many late-flowering wildflowers. The variety of habitats (wetlands, uplands, open, and shady), colors from purple and white to yellow and shades in between, as well as leaf shapes and sizes...well, it makes a late August nature walk in the moors or through the sandplain grasslands a colorful wonderland. The golden rods alone (there are more than 14 different golden rod species on-island) create a golden path through the dunes or along the sandy paths of the south shore.
A few of our spectacular rare species also bloom this time of year. The New England Blazing Star (Liatris novae-angliae) will start to bloom along the sandy path edges of Smooth Hummocks and other sandplain grassland habitats. Look for the spike of purple flowers about two feet tall. Hopefully you’ll be able to spot them before the deer do. Our white-tailed deer love to chomp the blossoms, but there are plenty to go around.
As August sets in, a new set of fruit starts to ripen. Beach plums, rose hips, and eventually fox grapes will continued on page 24

Revenge of the Goonies
by Steve “Tuna” Tornovish
It seems that Hollywood is incapable of an original thought these days. A quick review of the new movies out in theaters right now shows that the majority of new releases are, well, recycled. For example, a new Aliens movie has just been released. The original came out in 1979, the year I graduated high school. Aside from the fact that the once perky Sigourney Weaver would now most likely be using a walker to escape from the slimy alien, I’m thinking that 45 or so years would have been plenty of time to conjure up some new concepts.
The bigwigs out on the left coast have surmised that it’s easier and cheaper to get butts into theater seats if the onscreen product is already familiar to the ticket-buying public. Less risk, more reward, greater profits, right? Thus, we are flooded with recycled twisters, minions, wolverines, Godzillas, and such. They’ve already foisted about a dozen Sharknados on us. The Rocky series was drawn out to maybe eight movies. Well, I figure that if I can’t beat them, I might as well join them. Thus, here’s my pitch for the 2024 remake of The Goonies, appropriately titled Revenge of the Goonies.
Our modern-day Goonies were introduced you in the June 13th edition of Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket (pro tip: go to yesterdaysisland.com and search for Steve Tuna – the article is titled Stand By Me). I had received tips from my fellow fishing guide Tammy King and from my brother, Bill, that there was a group of local kids, all around 13 years of age, who were riding their bikes out to various fishing spots around the island. I eventually met up with them and was completely impressed by their love of fishing, as well as the tight bonds they had for their friends. So here’s my pitch: Imagine the camera fading in on a
madman ranting on the beaches of Great Point, screaming, “We’ve got to get more junior anglers submitting fish in the August Blues fishing tournament! Don’t they know that kids under 17 can enter for free? Have they a clue about the awesome fishing gear that will be awarded to the Junior Division winners?”
Enter the madman’s long-suffering brother. Let’s call him “Billy.” Billy once again does his level best to calm the madman down: “Relax, Steve Tuna – I have an idea. Why don’t you get in touch with the Goonies again and take them out for a night of fishing? It will be a blast and who knows— they might put some bluefish on the beach and thus be entered into the competition. Hit their parents up, and let’s get this booked!”
Brother Bill was right on the money. The Goonies parents, all strong supporters of their kids and their love of fishing, were right on it. A plan was formulated and this sequel was green-lighted for filming on August 14.
At 5:00 pm that Wednesday, the parking lot of the Wauwinet Gatehouse was filled with two fishing-ready Ford F-150 pickup trucks, a bunch of Goonies, and their parents. Greg McKechnie, father of Goonies team member Beau McKechnie, agreed to come along with us on the new adventure. The full Goonies squad was assembled: Beau, Weylin Mooney, Oliver Sullivan, Camden Carson, Lucas Miskinis, and Rojus Rascius. Rojus had been missing from my first meeting with the Goonies, but his fellow Goonies all stated that Rojus was the best fisher amongst them. It was time for us to see his skills. We loaded up and rolled out, ready for anything.

AN ISLAND POINT OF VIEW:
The Regulars
essay by Robert P. Barsanti
They said that they were never coming back. Again.
For thirty-eight years running.
They had their reasons. They weren’t rich. They told everyone that. They brought air mattresses for the kids, five frozen meals in a cooler, and a full tank of gas. The bikes were tied onto the car, the sleeping bags stored in roof carrier, and everything else packed around the kids. (Tim, your feet are going to be on the Hibachi).
Nantucket wasn’t for them, they said. They weren’t going to be buying cocktails that cost as much as a Domino’s pizza. They weren’t going to be shopping or going out to eat. They weren’t going to go on a tour to Great Point, or on a boat out to the Tuna Bar, or to a gala. Nantucket wasn’t for them: they would never be coming back.
They were here for the beaches. They packed up the bikes with towels and lunch, then pedaled off to Surfside. Soon, because it was closer, they pedaled to Nobadeer, but sat away from the cars. Dad, Mom, and the three ducks tagging along behind. As long as the weather was good, they rode the waves, walked the shore, and read books until they ran out of pages or sunscreen. But there are beaches everywhere. And cheaper.
On the last night, they drove the car to the beach around five o’clock. Then, with their Hibachi, the last of the frozen food, and any guests/uncles/friends who had slipped in and slept over, they had the famous final meal on the beach. One year, they had tried to cook fish, but it fell apart on the grill and needed to be washed off in the ocean. Generally, they cooked burgers and corn, had bean salad and potato salad, and a slice of the blueberry pie.

a friend, and she never left. “The softness of the air is what engaged me...that and the light,” Kane explained. “I always wanted to live on an island: now I have a life as an artist on an island.”
Her abstract compositions are a way to communicate without a specific intention: when creating art, she explained, “you have to put your ego aside—it wants be be the director—better to follow your unconscious. We must hold on to that which does not tell us to do anything.”
Kane described her artwork in the show at Gallery at Four India as a different from some of her other work: “they’re all dots, and they are layers...There are many different ways to make a mark: the dots are just another way,” said Kane. She calls the work in this show The Garden Series. “I was feeling burned out so I decided to garden instead...I found markers that Geddes left...I was packing them up and I got inspired. The colors were so vibrant! I picked them up, and I was so wide open because I was waiting to be called—I did not want to force anything.”
Raised immersed in the arts (both his parents are artists), it’s no surprise that Geddes Jones now has a career in art. “I was supported in my painting and drawing as far back as I remember...I was always drawing—’90s tribal tattoos in high school… sharp line work and calligraphy. My stepbrother came home once with a tattoo, and I couldn’t wait to turn 18 and get one.
“I never planned to be a tattoo artist. I was in Chicago, and my friend was getting a tattoo… I went to check out the tattoo place,” he explained. “I brought my portfolio with me, and he had me tattoo myself (to feel what it is like) then he hired me and taught me the fundamentals. He got me in the door, and that changed the trajectory of my life.”
Geddes describes his painting as “totally different from my tattoo work. In painting I am free to do whatever I want…a lot of pattern and vibration…I’ve heard it called ‘trippy.’ A lot [of my paintings] are landscapes that become a story. I try to get lost in the process when I’m painting, not overanalyze and not have a preconceived idea.
“In tattooing, there are more restrictions: I’m working with another person, [I have to take into account] the part of body, the longevity of the tattoo. There’s a lot to consider...My tattoos are simple and graphic: my paintings are layered.”
Although Geddes no longer lives on Nantucket, he and Joanna frequently communicate about art. “We send each other our work all the time, communicating and sharing. I learned a lot from both of [my parents]...A common thread between me and my mom is that we try to get lost in the process,” said Geddes. “The layers,” Kane added “is something that I have in common with Geddes.”
The opening reception for this extraordinary show in the Gallery at Four India Street will take place on Friday, August 23, from 6 to 8 pm. Both Joanna Kane and Geddes Jones will be present to discuss their work, share their creative processes, and engage with visitors. The reception offers a unique opportunity to meet the artists and gain insight into the experiences that have brought this show to life. The interplay between Joanna’s work and Geddes’ promises a rich and engaging experience for attendees, blending vibrant color, dynamic movement, and the lineage of their art. Don’t miss this chance to experience captivating artistic expression in The Gallery at Four India.

Revenge of the Goonies
Greg traveled out with me, along with Beau and Camden. The kids sat in the back, doing their best to ignore the old guys up front who talked about fishing, the island, and the challenges of raising kids these days. Brother Bill had the remaining four Goonies with him.
We drove down the eastern (outside) edge of the Great Point peninsula, looking for any signs that the elusive bluefish might be around—slicks, diving birds, jumping baitfish, and such. Nothing. We continued all the way to the turnaround point near the Galls (btw, can we PLEASE open Great Point fully? Please??? The nesting birds have long since attended their fledgling’s graduation from flight school, I’m sure!). There were a half-dozen trucks and a similar amount of fishers casting away. We pulled up.
“I just caught a bonito a couple of minutes ago. Got sealed, though!” My buddy Tommy Small stood closest to the fence. He used a very Nantuckety verb to describe the outcome of his fishing situation. To “be sealed” means that the fish that you worked hard to catch had been stolen by a 500 lb. thieving sea mammal, along with your lure, leader, line, and sanity. Grrrrrrrr!
We turned our platoon of Goonies loose on the unsuspecting public, with loud orders to spread out and stay away from the other fishers. Yeah, that didn’t go so well… As I repaired a fishing rod tangle, I could hear Greg and Billy moving Goonies away from poor Tommy. It was quite a scene.
Greg, Billy, and I finally got the kids spread out and away from the other fishers. We used this as a teachable moment about beach fishing etiquette. I’m hoping that our lectures sunk in!
The boys casted away as we three adults mentored them. Oliver soon had a world-class tangle. “I’m using 60 lb. test on my reel. This is the rod my dad and I use for shark fishing.” That explained everything. Oliver needed to use much lighter gear for the job we were doing. Billy assisted him, giving Oliver the rod that Billy had been using and taking Oliver’s birds-nest reel back to the truck for repairs.
“I’m on!” Rojus, as advertised, had been casting well and was now rewarded with a bonito. The thieving seal was still in our area, however, and wasted no
Mon-Sat: 6:30am-2pm Sunday: 6:30am-1pm
time. He pilfered the bonito that Rojus had worked so hard for. I took Rojus’ fishing rod from him and broke off the line, reminding myself not to use bad words in front of the Goonies.
We three adults conferred and quickly agreed that there was no sense in trying to get fish past the greedy seals. We herded up our Goonies and moved a mile or so back down the beach. We stopped near Porta-potty 1, a well-known Great Point landmark. It was time for the final scene of this sequel, the dramatic cumulative battle: man vs. beast...good vs. evil...and any other tired movie cliché that might fit. Hey, we’re over-budget, so wrap this up already!
Billy got the kids spread out. Greg and I tried to keep their confidence from waning. The Goonies were fading a little bit. After all, they hadn’t really eaten anything in about an hour, right? Billy managed to send a shock of adrenaline through the Goonies squad by hooking and catching a bluefish. Wow, those bluefish have been fairly elusive this season! The Goonies fished harder.
“We bring the BOOM! That’s what we doooooo!” Beau McKechnie, always the loudest of the Goonies, kept this chant going as he fished. He would stick a quick, “Got one!” in the middle, loving the reaction from the rest of us. I gave Camden Carson permission to give Beau a noogie if he continued.
The sun was dropping in a spectacular sunset. Time was running out. The
Revenge of the Goonies
from page 19
cinematic tension was building. Would any of the kids catch a fish before we had to depart for our scheduled 7:30 return? C’mon, now: what kind of movie would end without the good guys winning?
“Lucas has a fish! He’s on!” I looked up, half expecting to see that Beau was crying wolf again. Nope, Lucas Miskinis was definitely hooked up! He handled the fish perfectly, and just like that we had our Hollywood ending. Billy took over the duties of getting Lucas’ catch measured and photographed on the tape measure for submission to the August Blues tournament. It was great to see, let me tell ya!
We had about five more minutes to fish. Lucas got back to his spot and hooked a second fish. “He’s catching that same fish again,” cried his Goonie friends. This fish successfully spat the hook, however. It was time for us to load up and head back.
I asked Brother Bill what the conversation was like in his truck on the return trip. He said it went something like this:
How many fishing rods do you think that you and Steve own?
Answer: Maybe 100.
What’s the biggest striped bass you’ve caught this year?
Answer: 37 inches long.
Do you have a boat? Why don’t you fish from the boat?
Answer: It’s tough to get time enough to do it all!
When should we fish tomorrow at Point O’ Breakers (a popular Goonies fishing spot due to accessibility)?
Answer: 10:00 am to about noon will be the right tide.
And the most important question that the Goonies asked: When can we do this again? Somewhere in Hollywood, a fat-cat movie producer is greenlighting a sequel to the sequel.
Great job, Goonies! Keep fishing. And keep bringing the BOOM! Stay tuned for the next installment!

selection of products for women, men, and children. All clothing in assemble— whether it be elegant shirts for men, colorful dresses for women, or adorable outfits for youngsters—is handmade from organic materials. Even the apothecary items they carry are natural.
Carolyn Butler and Rich Amsinger, the husband-and-wife team who founded and co-own assemble, decided to expand their digital sales to include their first brick-and-mortar store on Nantucket. “We chose Nantucket Island for its unique community and commitment to environmental sustainability, which aligns well with our mission to empower conscious consumption and support regenerative natural systems. Nantucket's appreciation for quality and ethical practices makes it an ideal location for us to connect with like-minded customers.”
They gather brands and independent designers together to provide an assortment of natural, ethically produced, regenerative products from 40 different brands, each known for their dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability. These are not mass-produced products, but items by small makers from around the world who offer handcrafted clothing, accessories, apothecary items, and more. Assemble partners with brands that hold certifications like organic, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), and OEKO-Tex (all textile materials are free from toxic chemicals and dyes). Each product is chosen to ensure it meets assemble’s high standards for environmental and social responsibility.
Every item in assemble’s inventory is chosen for its ability to fit within the store’s circular economy framework and the company’s B Corp certification. This means that whether it’s a beautifully crafted handbag, stunning blockprint or embroidered clothing, an organic skincare product, or 100% soy candles made by hand using custom scents, customers can be assured that their purchases are aligned with principles of durability and minimal environmental impact. Unlike traditional linear systems, where products are made, used, and then thrown away, the circular approach seeks to keep resources in use for as long as possible.
The company’s commitment to this model means that customers can shop with the knowledge that their purchases are part of a larger effort to reduce waste and conserve resources.
As a Certified B Corporation, assemble is proud to “meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency,” Butler explained. “Through our give-back program, every purchase comes with a lifetime return policy, allowing customers to return pre-loved items to us. We compost or recycle these items to prevent them from ending up in landfills. In return, customers receive a give-back credit that can be used towards the next purchase.”
Assemble is at the forefront of a crucial shift in the fashion industry, demonstrating that style and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. By embracing a circular economy model, working with small, global artisans, and achieving B Corp certification, assemble is not just changing the way we shop but how we think about our impact on the world. As consumers become increasingly aware of the need for more sustainable practices, assemble stands as a beacon of innovation and integrity, proving that a better future is not only possible but actively being created today.

Even then, in the cooling evening as the sunset faded and the stars appeared, they swore they would never come back.
Then, before ten on Sunday morning, the old Coach appeared on the back step to take his cup and to talk business. She wanted her husband to point out the mildew in the bathroom (it looked like a Roosevelt), the sagging cabinets, and the spiders that took over the outdoor shower EVERY NIGHT. And maybe he did. But, after a few minutes of brotherhood and bullshit, he signed a check and handed it over. The check disappeared into a front pocket. Then Coach helped load the sleeping bags and the towels into the roof carrier.
Somehow, they came back.
Again and again and again.
This year, as always, Gram and her sister came down during the third week in August to the same house. She invited all three of the children and their families, but only Tim and his family could make it this year. He came with his wife, his daughter who was finishing high school, and his son who was in his second year at UMass, and the girlfriend whose name slipped away. She was a runner with several bikinis, an adoring glance, and a tent that the two of them slept in out back. Gram kept running the air conditioning every night just in case.
She had made arrangements with the Coach’s daughter, who never put in a pool, or a deck, or landscaping. Nantucket is not kind to houses: the years and the wind had cracked the windows and doors open, so there had to be some work done: a new roof, new windows, and a lot of new paint. But it remained a handshake deal.
They wouldn’t come back next year. She was sure of that.
The island had changed and not for the better. The traffic was worse, which was hard to believe. Sharks patrolled the south shore beaches, although the surf was more deadly. Even the power at the market went out. With its “updates,” the house remained drafty, spotted with mold, and infested with squadrons of spiders. Especially in the outdoor shower.
on page 23
Now without the bicycles, they drove to Ladies’ Beach in the late afternoon on Friday, their last full day. The ladies settled into their chairs, walked into the surf up to their knees when it got too hot, then returned to Elin Hilderbrand. Tim and his wife settled in, while the three young people stared at their phones from their towels. Gram kept her eyes on that girl.
As Gram sat back in the chair, she thought that they would never come back.
The beach changed. It smelled like cigars. Beautiful people with Tommy Bahama chairs sat in precious clusters with wine glasses and deli meats on a plate. The children had boogie, surf, and stand-up paddle boards. They had kadima paddles and frisbees and toys, yet the kids sat in their chairs and stared at their phones. Nobody was reading.
She closed her eyes.
She woke up after more than an hour. The light was fading in the east and reddening in the west as the sun settled towards clouds. Her neighbors, their cigars, and their phones had left nothing but ash and dents in the beach sand.
The children had dug a hole for the grill, filled it with charcoal and lighter fluid (apparently), and lit it with four-foot-high flames. The cooler was ready with potato salad, ears of corn wrapped in aluminum foil, and leftover broccoli salad. Her sister had a large-ish wine glass in one hand, but her eyes were on the red lights on the horizon.
“Let’s go for a walk,” she said.
And they did, with their feet in the lace of the ocean. She drank her sister’s wine until they ran out, then they came back to dinner with the next generations.
In the gloaming, as the constellations returned, one ancient star at a time, her family finished the wine, finished the brownies, and folded the towels. Everyone else packed the car and left the two older women in their chairs. On this night, the meteors fell into the sea. They all sat to watch.
The next morning, when the Coach’s daughter appeared for coffee and conversation, Gram gave her a check.
She was afraid that she might not come back.

be visible (if you know where to look). While delicious and plentiful, the fruits of August and early September usually need processing to enjoy. Jams, jellies, and fruit pies are usually in order. The blueberries and huckleberries may be done for the season, but there is still a bit of foraging to be had. Blackberries (or dewber-
ries) are fruiting, and they are a trail-side treat. Dewberries and blackberries are all members of the Rubus genus, along with raspberries. Some are more viney than others and some grow more upright, but all have that characteristic berry clump. When the berries are deep purple (almost black), give them a little tug. If they come off easily, they are ready to eat. If they take a bit of effort, you will end
up with a sour puss.
Beside what you can see and taste, what do you hear in August? By this time, the katydids can be heard calling in the wooded areas. I’m writing this on my back deck, and I can hear their low whine or hum. The sound is produced by them rubbing two parts of their front wings together: one part is the file or comb, which has rough ridges; the other part is the plectrum, used to produce the vibration. This is the males calling to the females: they mate during late summer.
I usually think of mating, nesting, hatching all happening in spring and early summer. But the reptiles of Nantucket also love the end of the summer season. Our garter snakes will start hatching this month. Garter snakes are ovoviviparous, which means females make eggs but hold them in their bodies until the young hatch, and then release the young. Females can give birth to 12-40 young! But don’t worry. You generally won’t see them unless you go looking.
Our turtle species also begin hatching. For both our spotted and eastern painted turtles, hatchlings emerge from the nest in August or September in search of food and shelter in the edges of grassy, wet meadow areas and bogs. They can sometimes over-winter in the nest. Snapping turtle hatchlings emerge around this time as well. Let’s keep an eye out on our favorite sandy trails and along roads to help these little ones survive to next year.
Just like the college students heading out to new frontiers, late August means migration for many of bird species that bred on Nantucket this summer. The shorebird migrants include the sanderling, sandpipers, and the black-bellied plover, among many, many others. The shores of Nantucket are one of the best places to watch this migration.
The southward migration of warblers, as well as other land birds, also begins during this time. Warblers generally do most of their migration during the nighttime hours. You can sometimes see their silhouettes against the sky on moonlit nights. Join a bird walk with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation or just go out on your own to see what migratory treasures you can find.
August—in like a lion… out like a lamb. As we look forward to the “lamb” side of things, we can breathe again. We look forward to a quieter season, more space at the beach, fewer traffic jams (outside of school drop off), and more time to wander in nature.
I know I’m already looking forward to Second Summer. In the meantime, I have to remind myself: it’s Still Summer!

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
