A Day of Fun and Literacy

On Saturday, September 7, Children’s Beach will transform into a haven for young book lovers and aspiring readers. This first ever Children’s Book Day promises to be filled with joy, creativity, and discovery for children aged 2 to 9. Positioned strategically between National Read a Book Day and International Literacy Day, the event aims to ignite a lifelong love of reading and learning in our island’s youngest residents.

Shantaw Bloise-Murphy, director of Culture and Tourism on Nantucket, partnered with the Nantucket Book Foundation to bring the idea to life. She described Children’s Book Day as “something I’ve been toying with since attending the Brooklyn Children Museum Book Fest for Kids...I grew up in a household where reading was crucial. I developed a love for books, falling in love with characters, and feeling a part of something else. My love of reading has transferred to my son, and watching his love of literature develop made me want to bring this to all children here on Nantucket.”

Realizing that Children’s Book Day fits well with the mission of the Nantucket Book Foundation, Bloise-Murphy presented the idea to Mary Haft, co-founder of the Nantucket Book Festival and Vice President of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation.

The Nantucket Land Bank is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Not a non-profit conservation group and not quite a Town department, the Land Bank is a singular entity. The first of its kind in the United States, the Nantucket Islands Land Bank was conceived by Nantucket’s Planning Commission, adopted by the voters of Nantucket, and established by a special act of the Massachusetts Legislature in 1983. The Land Bank’s revenue is derived from a two percent fee levied on most real estate transfers on the island. This funding is used to acquire and manage land for open space, agriculture, and recreational uses. The Land Bank is governed by a five-member elected commission who oversee the actions of the organization. With these impressive resources, we, as a community, all benefit from the work of the Land Bank.

Old-Fashioned Fair Returns in September

Evening air is growing crisper, and days are filled with sunshine and the water is still warm enough for swimming. The busy season is winding down, but there are still plenty of events to attend. September gives us all time to breathe and reconnect. The Nantucket Island Fair, an ideal event to gather with friends and family and remember the simple pleasures of island living, returns on Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Once again, the fair will be held at Tom Nevers Field, its wide open space providing plenty of room for plenty of fun (and parking). Fair admission for a carload is $30; fairgoers who bike or walk to the fair pay just $10 each. Those who help set up, run, and take down the fair are admitted free of charge. Volunteers are needed—experienced and first-timers—anyone interested in helping can sign up for a shift at NantucketIslandFair.com or send an email to nantucketislandfairvolunteers@gmail.com

Fair organizers have planned a wide variety of activities, games, and live music on both days. The games begin with a traditional Sack Race at 11 am, followed by a Watermelon Eating Contest at 12 noon. At 1 pm, test your endurance at the Hot Pepper Eating Contest. Try your hand at the skillet-throwing contest at 2 pm, and see if you can hurl a skillet farthest down the field. And dessert comes early on Saturday, when the Cupcake Eating Contest will be held at 3 pm. continued on page 25

One Crazy Summer

Wow, what a week. What an absolutely crazy, bizarre week. Truth be told, this entire summer has been a lot of crazy. Wind turbine blades, beach closures, seals snapping fishing rods, astounding traffic congestion, supermarket refrigeration failures, supermarket deli meat recalls, supermarket payment system snafus, supermarket prices, gas prices...yeah, a wonderful conflagration burning up the Nantucket summer. Could it be that we’ve almost survived (oh, I hate myself a little for what’s about to happen here) One Crazy Summer?

The first official One Crazy Summer was August of 1985, when Nantucket took its inaugural run at jumping the shark (this is a Fonzie / Happy Days television show reference for you youngsters: look it up). A movie was actually going to be filmed here on our sweet little island. Could it be true? The island was abuzz, I tell ya!

We’d had some close calls in the past. Part-time Nantucket resident Nat Benchley’s hilarious book The Off-Islanders, a cold-war farce that involved a Russian submarine getting fetched up on a south shore sandbar, was the basis for the 1966 movie, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming! I recall hearing much speculation as to which island resident was the inspiration for each thinlyveiled fictional character. A highlight of Mr. Benchley’s book was a significant face-off between the native islanders and the shipwrecked Russians, which took place at the town dump. If my memory serves, someone got beaned pretty good in the head by a thrown bottle and everyone calmed down. Regardless, the movie was ultimately filmed in Mendocino, CA and not on Nantucket. Womp, womp, womp… The movie’s most memorable quote was when the Russian sailors were driving through town, yelling through a loudspeaker, “Emehrgancy! Everybody to get from street!” I used this line more than once while on patrol.

A second Hollywood near-miss for Nantucket involved yet another Benchley. Peter Benchley’s book Jaws became an iconic hit movie in the summer of 1975.

The Nantucket Historical Association and the Egan Maritime Institute invite the public to join them for a series of three live maritime music performances featuring American troubadour Bill Schustik and his talented Nantucket crew. Bring a blanket to sit on, pack a picnic, and set sail into an evening of jaunty tunes and enchanting melodies at one (or all) of the free 90-minute concerts in this 2nd annual Sea Shanties Maritime Music Series. The first concert is on Thursday, August 29 at Children’s Beach. The second is on Thursday, September 5 outdoors at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, 158 Polpis Road, and the third is an indoor concert in the Nantucket Whaling Museum on Thursday, September 12. On Sunday, I came to the worst mess of the summer. The remains of the family who rented the house in Tom Nevers would take the better part of six hours to clean up. I knew it would. Every year they rent the same place, stay for two weeks, and leave with nothing but memories. Everything else remains piled up in the house. On this weekend, the wind had turned and pushed the fog and humidity out to sea. The hurricane had left some waves, but the sky was clear and the air Canadian. For a moment, I thought of them on the boat, leaving on the one glorious day at the end of two weeks of wet, warm, and wild. Enjoy Minnesota, I saluted.

Caretaking has gotten easier this summer. Houses that needed to be turned over once a week, now are turning over once a month. Mow the lawns, clean the pool, check for leaks. The phone does not chirp and sputter much, aside from the usual locked doors and broken windows. The owners don’t want to talk to me, and they definitely don’t want to see an invoice.

The rich and privileged may have known about the sputtering rental and real estate market. They may have figured that the owners would be very happy to have their business back for another year, no matter the mess they left behind. Their deposit would remain good and constant, rolling over to another August.

And they were probably right.

This year they used every bed in the house. I started at the master bedroom, then prowled through the other rooms, stripping the bed linens and tucking them into pillow cases. Each set of sheets dropped a half cup of sand onto the floor. Had I been more careful, I would have brought them out to the porch and shaken them out, but the whole house would need a vacuum anyway. In addition to the beds, they had pulled out the sofa-bed, laid mattresses and sleeping bags on the floor and had even dragged the old, musty, and deeply stored IKEA mattress out to the porch so that someone could sleep under the stars. They came with their kids, and those kids had their own kids, and, of course, they were kids as well, so their parents

“She brought it to the board and they got on board,” explained Bloise-Murphy, who is working on the event with Tim Ehrenberg, Barbara Tibbetts, Sara DiVello, Wendy Hudson, Kaley Kokomoor, Jill Surprenant, and Becky Hickman. “We have a phenomenal library [on Nantucket],” she added, “it’s great to continue to support children’s literacy in different ways.”

Families are invited to join in the festivities from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Food, beverages, and facilities are available on site at the Gyp-Sea Cafe at Children’s Beach.

Children’s Book Day will offer a range of free experiences for children and their families designed to foster literacy and spark imagination, including craft activities, a Nanpuppets performance, a bubble machine, and a kindness parade. The full slate of events is still being finalized, but at press time, two distinguished authors are scheduled to be showcased, each bringing their unique flair to the day.

Gary Wakstein, known for his beloved series The Adventures of Cray, will be appearing under his pen name G Pa Rhymes. With charming stories and whimsical illustrations by Erica Leigh, his books captivate young readers with rhythm and rhyme designed to teach youngsters about kindness, empathy, friendship, honesty, and bravery. His interactive reading sessions and engaging storytelling will be a highlight of the day. On his website, the author states “My objective is to help children during challenging moments in life through the power of storytelling. Talking with kids at a young age about bullying, the environment, racial equality, and other social issues helps them understand what it means to be a good friend to others, ourselves, creatures, and the planet.”

Joining Wakstein is author Robin Newman, renowned for her entertaining and educational detective stories for children. Newman's many books feature clever mysteries (full of puns and sure to inspire some giggles) and engaging plots that fascinate young minds. Both authors will participate in read-aloud sessions, allowing children to experience the magic of storytelling firsthand.

Wakstein, Newman, and Leigh will lead and assist young Children’s Book Day attendees in various craft activities that will encourage the kids to explore their artistic talents while connecting with the stories they hear. Some of the crafts can be worn or carried during the Kindness Parade at 12:30 pm, where children can join in a lively procession celebrating the importance of kindness and empathy.

Barbara Tibbetts, author of the Look Book series, has designed for the event a special scavenger hunt for kids. On Children’s Book Day, participants can pick up a scavenger hunt “bingo” card, and they will have a week to decipher and follow the clues. Completed cards can be turned in at Nantucket Visitor Services on Federal Street for a free book. “We want to do all we can to encourage kids to keep reading,” commented Bloise-Murphy.

Children's Book Day is designed to be a community celebration of the joys of reading. By providing a platform for authors and offering engaging activities, this is a way to reinforce a commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a love for literature. Rain date for this event is September 8.

But not to worry, folks: all was about to be rectified. Hollywood was prepared to make its amends to the fine people of Nantucket by filming a cinematic masterpiece right here! And what a stupendous film this was. Featuring characters named Hoops McCann, George Calamari, his son Squid Calamari, the Stork brothers, Egg and Clay and the unforgettable Ack Ack Raymond (get it?), director Savage Steve Holland (really?) had Nantucket in his hand as filming began. Bobcat Goldthwait, John Cusack, and a pre-crazy incarnation of Demi Moore were awarded celebrity status. Siri, please set the timer for 15 minutes…

Oh yeah, this movie is bad. The fact that this script got the green light is testament to how significant the cocaine situation was in mid-80s America. I would have to include One Crazy Summer with other movie gems like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and the entire Sharknado series in the pantheon of truly terrible movies. Woof!

So back to the crazy summer of 2024… In the fishing world, this is the year that the bluefish were replaced by the previously rare bonito. Remember those halcyon days when your arms were worn out from hauling bluefish after bluefish out of the surf? Yeah, buddy, that didn’t happen in 2024. It was all bonito, I tell ya!

Now don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying that this is a bad thing. Bonito are an absolute blast to catch. They hit hard, sometimes escaping the fish hook part of the lure as they whack at the bait with their beak-like mouths. And wow, do they fight when hooked! Bonito are crazy fast, a distant member of the tuna family (hey now!). Once hooked, the bones (a term of endearment) will take off, screaming drag from fishing reels in a manner generally reserved for false albacore. Oh, yeah, speaking of false albacore, let’s hear it for beach fisher Dante Bruschi who landed our first beach albie of 2024!

So there you are, casting away when a bonito slams your lure (generally a metal lure, an epoxy minnow or an Island X Hellfire, either the 120 or 180 size). The fish goes on the afore-mentioned run and then...nothing. Your line goes slack. This is where your guide Stevie Tuna is yelling at you, “Reel, reel, reel as fast as you can!” The bones will swim right towards you, something that bluefish or striped bass rarely do. It’s imperative that you catch up quickly to avoid

“I just can’t believe how strong that little fish was!” This is the most common quote I hear from a fisher who had just landed their first bonito. I got to hear this four times when the Bordes family fished with me on a recent afternoon trip. It was a fairly easy session for me as Cormac and his three sons, Peter, Will, and Johnny were very proficient at casting. That allowed me to goof off and talk with Audrey, the awesome mom to the three boys. Audrey and her crew had a deal of sorts. The guys got their fishing time this afternoon. In return, they would not whine while Audrey searched out some things she wanted to see the next day. Audrey asked me about several Nantucket locations described in Elin Hilderbrand books, as well as where I suspected that she might meet the famous Miss Peaches. I did my best to point her in the right direction, but was mighty glad when her guys started hauling bonito onto the beach. Each of the guys caught at least one fish. I was once again reminded how fortunate I am to get to meet such wonderful families.

Just how good has the bonito bite been lately? My niece, Meri Lepore, called me and asked if there was a chance that her husband Matt Peele might finally be able to catch a fish off of the beach in order to “…apply for his Islander Card.” Yikes. This was a tall order. I pondered it for a moment and told her that yes, there was a slight chance, provided that Matt would fish on the outside edge of Great Point and toss something shiny.

Beth and I figured that we better get out there to help. And it was a good thing that we did. Matt was tossing an amber-colored Hellfire. Shiny, Matt—I said shiny! I gave him a shiny metal lure and Ka-boom! He was hooked up! Matt did a great job fighting the mighty bonito, and very soon he was posing with his first ever beach-caught fish, much like a blind squirrel posing with an acorn it stumbled upon. And as if to shut up his loudmouth know-it-all uncle, Matt soon caught his second one. Job well done, Matt! Remy Stressenger, another hard-charging beach fisher (thanks to Tammy King’s fantastic work getting ladies out there casting!), got a thorough induction into the world of bonito catching. She landed six this morning on the south shore. Her husband, Garth, caught five. “Immediately I knew it wasn’t a blue. Catching my first bonito felt like a fun game of tug of war! Hearing the line ‘zing’ as it ran made me smile. Then I gently eased him onto the beach to see those beautiful stripes!”

And finally, here’s this from Gray Malitsky, my former

evil arch-nemesis: “The bonito took over the role of the MIA bluefish, launching clear out of the water to smash lures on the surface. Between my mom and me, we beached 45 bonito in 12 hours of fishing, numbers only made possible by the shocking lack of seals.” Gray starts his freshman year at Colby College this week. Go get ‘em, nemesis!

It’s all bonito all the time out there on the beaches, folks. Please believe me when I tell you that this fish that was once so infrequently caught that the winner of the Inshore Classic fishing tournament was often determined by which lucky angler happened to land this unicorn. And now it’s replacing the ubiquitous bluefish as the primary target of beach anglers.

This has been one crazy summer indeed!

Finding New Places

has taken on many of the functions that traditionally a town’s park and rec department would administer.

For many in our community, people think of the Land Bank for their amazing playgrounds, the golf courses, and the beaches. My family has definitely benefitted from all of those things. However, it’s the smaller tracts of land that are sometimes underappreciated which I hope to highlight.

It’s amazing to me that, after ten years living here and seven years prior in the late 90s to early 2000s, I can still find new places on Nantucket where I have never been. Last year, I found a “new-to-me” beach access point which has become a favorite walking spot for my dogs, who love the water but not the crowds. Traveling to the end of Quaise Road, the NLB maintains a small, dirt parking lot with a trail to the beach. This spot provides access to the shore, but also to the small mooring field in Nantucket Harbor, close to the entrance to Polpis Harbor. This spot is also great in the winter for shellfishing.

Another novel location for me is a place that I stumbled upon while exploring Madaket Harbor with a group of college students studying Madaket Ditch. At the corner of Tennessee Avenue and M Street is a small dirt parking spot. It doesn’t look like much from the parking area: a tiny bit of mowed lawn and a wild hedge row. But follow the small trail, and you come to a long dock that stretches over salt marsh vegetation and ends at Hither Creek, the entrance to Madaket Harbor. Sitting at the end of the small dock, you are looking straight across to Madaket Marine. I’ve used it as a spot to view Hither Creek, but I imagine it can be used as a spot to crab or fish.

The parking lot and access at Cathcart Beach is an important access point to Nantucket Harbor and the mooring fields. The NLB also maintains the dinghy docks at that location. The NLB even invested in an adjacent property to the old parking area to provide more places to park. This purchase was a demonstration to the community that the extensive resources of the NLB can be used, in part, for more public boating access.

The Land Bank has recently focused not just on public access, but also on making many of the locations as accessible as possible to a broad audience. Sesachacha Pond, the island’s largest brackish body of water, now has a handicap accessible access point via a wooden boardwalk. The small spot of land NLB owns at 18 Sesachacha Road provides public access to the pond, while much of the surrounding area is owned by Mass Audubon Nantucket.

Another handicap accessible spot is Settler’s Landing. Located along the edge of Madaket Harbor on the western end of the island, Settler’s Landing features small waves and shallow waters and is accessible via a wooden dock that ends with benches that look out to the harbor. This is a fantastic place to watch the sunset.

All these water access points are in addition to the numerous beach access points: Ladies Beach, Madequesham, 40th Pole, Cisco, Stone’s Beach, and Codfish Park, all owned and maintained by NLB. The parking areas ensure that all beaches are free and that people are herded to paths and parking that protects the surrounding ecological resources.

had to come. All of those people stuffed into the house, from the loft down to the basement and, this year, out on the deck.

The refrigerator had become an archeological dig. I should write a message on the door: “Nobody will use your leftovers.” It wouldn’t matter: turnover day is dedicated to flat tonic water, extra plastic tubs of tartar sauce, ketchup, mustard, relish, and grapefruit flavored beer. In the refrigerator they also left three jars of baby food, two bottles of Ensure, a tin of French fries, and two servings of blackberry buckle in a dish. The freezer had a good sized chunk of frozen bluefish, empty ice trays, and two bottles that looked a lot like frozen breast milk.

In the rest of the kitchen, a bag of potato chips, a box of Cheerios, and three bananas had surrendered to time, fog, and fruit flies. In the corner, they had restored and re-stacked three empty boxes of the local beer, four blueberry and cranberry vodka bottles, and two empty bottles of Cold Duck. Apparently, there had been a party. I filled a trash bag, then brought the empties to the bed of the truck. They sat with their backs against the cab, next to the slouched bags of sheets.

While I vacuumed, I found other gifts the rich and privileged had left for me. Coins and golf tees were the usual leftovers, but so were the receipts, the match books, pens, a newspaper, and one pink pacifier. Unless I wanted to mail the pacifier back, I didn’t collect anything that anyone would call for in a panic. On the other hand, they left two jigsaw puzzles, a book of Sudoku, and the last two Elin books tucked into the book shelves.

They had used all of the towels. All twelve were hanging on the clothes line, still damp, still stiff with salt, still dirty. Underneath the second floor deck, and tucked under the first floor windows, all of the beach equipment remained sandy. The boogie boards, the stand up paddle boards, the umbrellas, the chairs, and the rest of the toys waited for a firm and demanding spray from the hose. The bikes, rods and the golf clubs had migrated around the house but they didn’t look particularly dirty, and, from sad experience, I didn’t think they would profit from the hose treatment.

At the far end of the yard, as close as caution would allow to the scrub oak and brush, the fire pit held court amid six Adirondack chairs. They had been dragged out of storage, or off the deck, or, finally, from the brush and set up around a metal dish filled with ash, a burnt twig or two, and the melted corpses of three red cups. From the look of the woodpile, they may have had fires every night.

It took hours. The trash bags filled all of the cans. The remains of corn, lobsters, and diapers peaked out through the white plastic. As I tossed them into the bed filled with the remains of the rich and privileged, I decided this would require at least two visits back to the house. The bathrooms needed to be cleaned, as did the kitchen, and all of the wooden floors.

They had had a week. They had a week with four generations in the same building, waking up to the sun, sitting beside the ocean, and falling asleep beneath the smear of the Milky Way. The old people muttered, the baby cried, and the kids whispered their worries to each other. But this year, there had been births, but no funerals, no long hospital stays, no unanswered and angry silences. They had all been here, at this moment, for this one instant, with the tides of time held off by luck, patience, and cash.

They truly were rich and privileged.

If you’ve been cultivating the perfect vegetables or fruits in your Nantucket gardens, bring your pride and joy to the Harvest Tent at the fairgrounds before 1 pm on Saturday, September 21 to be judged with the other entries. In additional to “island-grown” categories, home cooks will compete for their entries to be named Best Preserves, Best Whoopie Pies, Best Baked Goods (any breads, muffins, cupcakes, cakes, pies, or other favorite baked good). This year there’s even a competition for honey harvested and packed on Nantucket. And the popular Giant Pumpkin Contest is back! Due to the size of these behemoths, growers are invited to drop off their entries on Friday afternoon, September 20—all contenders must be in position before 1 pm on Saturday.

Geronimo’s & Cold Noses are sponsoring the Dog Show at this year’s Nantucket Island Fair on Saturday, September 21. Details on how to enter your fourlegged friends will be posted soon on the fair’s website.

All livestock being shown at the fair is local: the show ring event will be held both on Saturday and on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Anyone with animals they’d like to show should contact nantucketislandfairvolunteers@gmail.com for details.

Performers are still being lined up to provide live entertainment on the fair stage: as of our press date, The Dunbars and The Bad Dads Band will be playing their tunes, and Lizza will perform her NanPuppet Show.

New this year is a Car Show: organizers are offering free fair admission and special parking to anyone who brings an antique or unique car to the Nantucket Island Fair to display to fairgoers. Exhibitors must register in advance at the fair website to be assigned parking and a free pass.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits.
