Having made a career of working for nonprofit organizations, I’ve always loved the image of “standing on the shoulders” of the people who have come before me. Stewarding nonprofits requires a steady view of the past because the roots of an organization’s mission usually point the way forward. In the case of the Artists Association of Nantucket, the path for the future was clearly outlined by the group of artists and patrons who founded the organization. First, they were given the amazing gift of space in an historic building to display and sell the art of Nantucket artists. That quickly led to organizing teachers to mentor and instruct the artists. Finally, they recognized the importance of preserving the history of Nantucket art by forming a Permanent Collection. But let’s start at the beginning. Everett U. Crosby, as the president of the Nantucket Historical Trust, provided a gallery for Nantucket’s artists to show their work in the newly refurbished Kenneth Taylor Galleries located in the Macy Warehouse on Straight Wharf, opening in July 1945. Less than two months after the Galleries opened, Crosby, along with several patrons and artists, called a meeting for a “free and it is hoped many-sided preliminary discussion of the formation of a suggested league of artists.” The organization was officially launched soon after and the first formal meeting of AAN was held on September 6, 1945. The Island has always been a hub for artists and art teachers. Many of the organization’s founders were students of Frank Swift Chase, the “dean of Nantucket artists.”

Trained at the Art Students League, Chase was instrumental in founding the Woodstock Artists Association and an influential teacher on Nantucket starting as early as 1920. He joined AAN in 1948 and continued to teach on the island through the mid 1950s. “For much of the twentieth century, local tourism concentrated on the island’s maritime heritage, but a second

undeniable identity surfaced in the years following World War II — that of a mecca for the arts,” said AAN curator Robert Frazier. The founders were well aware that there was no museum or other lasting repository for the history of Nantucket’s art colony, so they began collecting. In 1949, AAN had already added 30 pieces of art to their growing Permanent Collection. Today the Collection stands at over 1,400 pieces and the staff and board of directors are proud to host at least two exhibitions of historic art annually. It is deeply gratifying that today’s mission to foster the visual arts on Nantucket by supporting Nantucket artists, providing arts education, and preserving Nantucket art history is exactly what its founders imagined. Its thriving gallery, the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street, is open eleven months of the year (closed in January) and hosts more than a dozen exhibitions. It has gained a healthy reputation as a place to meet Nantucket’s upcoming artists, yet it still supports and nurtures the careers of artists who have been working on the island for decades. There are currently over 260 artist members and they enthusiastically participate in gallery programming including Sidewalk Art Shows, demonstrations, artist talks, and more. Since officially becoming an educational nonprofit in 1952, AAN turned its full attention to building a robust arts program for adults and children. The organization turned a transformative corner in recent years with the purchase and renovation of a 9,000-square-foot building at 24 Amelia Drive. The Visual Arts Center opened in June 2015 and is fully outfitted for classes in the visual arts including drawing, painting, ceramics, mixed media, and printmaking. In addition, there is an exhibition space intended to feature work by students and teachers along with annual shows from the Permanent Collection; rental opportunities for artists to work in the building; and a comfortable apartment to house visiting teachers. An artist-in-residence program was launched in 2016, and the organization attracted artists from as far away as Zimbabwe to come to Nantucket to work and teach with island artists and students over the winter months. collaborations with other organizations, including the Nantucket Atheneum, Nantucket STAR, and the Saltmarsh Senior Center, have also added interesting dimension to the AAN’s mission to foster the arts on Nantucket through education. Perhaps one of the most satisfying elements of the organization is its internship program. Education program director Lori Garrabrant nurtures AAN’s youngest students (starting at two years of age) and over the years mentors and encourages them until they reach an age when they can begin helping in classes. There is nothing more thrilling than to see the young teens working with smaller children in the classrooms, joyfully imparting their love of art. The interns are the living spirit of what the organization holds most dear: art has the power to change lives. Their passion for the visual arts is intuitively and enthusiastically demonstrated and passed along. From there, it is our hope that these young people will become artist members and teachers, taking over from those of us who run the organization today. I will happily give them a boost up onto my shoulders.

Outdoor entertaining is one of the great pleasures of Nantucket. When a simple patio and garden are no longer enough, it might be time to consider upgrading your space by adding a fire feature. Fire features add to the flow from inside the house to outside, extending the living area. Traditional fire pits and the more contemporary fire tables can become the heart of your backyard: a gathering place for friends and family and a cozy spot for conversation and cocktails. The simplest type of fire feature is a fire pit. Think of a fire pit as a more contained, controlled, and safer campfire. There is a wide variety to choose from, so the space you have and your budget will help determine what size and style works best for you. Next question to answer is do you want a gas fire pit or one that burns wood? Gas is easier to light and extinguish; has little cleanup; and produces less smoke and almost no flying sparks. But you are not going to want to attempt any cooking over a gas

But wood-fueled fire pits pose more of a danger, so you’ll have to keep the family firebugs under control, and an adult must attend a wood-fueled fire until it is completely extinguished. Fire Features continued from page 100 for a very long time before they even come close to rusting through. It’s best to set a fire pit atop a natural surface such as concrete, stone, gravel, brick, slate, or a fire-resistant composite. Putting it on a wood deck can be very dangerous, so don’t do that! These should be at least ten feet from any structure or wooden railing (farther away is better), and avoid overhanging branches. A permanent fire pit is typically built on a base of gravel somewhere in the backyard. Fire tables are a more sophisticated option for a fire feature. Like a fire pit, a fire table contains a controlled fire for recreational use. Fire tables can be simple: round like a traditional fire pit, but with a wide rim around the perimeter to hold drinks or snacks. More common is a rectangular style that looks like an indoor coffee table. You can even install a fire table that is dining height and doubles as a table where you can serve a meal when the fire is out and a cover is put on. This type of design is convenient for times when you need the entire table surface for other purposes. Fire tables have safety features that fire pits lack, including glass surrounds that can be very handy if you have young children. And fire tables can be installed on a wooden deck, closer to structures than you’d dare with a fire pit. Media for fire tables are designed to hide the heating elements, and include decorative lava rock and shimmering fire glass or fire beads in a rainbow of colors to match your decor. To enhance nighttime enjoyment of your fire feature, consider installing subtle outdoor lighting near the fire pit or fire table to illuminate the area without destroying the camp-fire mood. Energy-efficient LEDs strung overhead or in nearby trees are attractive ways to add lighting. And think about what sort of seating to provide: classic Adirondacks around the fire feature can be cozy and so can cushioned wicker, but be sure to position chairs around a fire feature, particularly a fire pit, so that people can rise and move about without getting too close to the fire.
As of last fall, the Nantucket Fire Department no longer requires permits for grills or for fire features, but a fire of any kind demands serious attention, so they do emphasize safety. Some of the practices they’d like you to keep in mind include: • Keep dried leaves and brush cleared away from around your fire pit. • Never, ever use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc) to light or relight fires. • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loosefit clothing when tending a fire pit. • Never leave a burning gas or wood fire unattended. • Have fire extinguishing materials handy, including shovels, rakes, and a water supply (garden hose, pump can, or pressurized water fire extinguisher). And test the water source before igniting the fire: you do not want to find out the water is off or the hose is cracked when you need it. • Be prepared to extinguish the fire if winds pick up or the weather changes. Most open burning gets out of control during a sudden wind change. • Make sure all media added to your gas fire pit is sold for that purpose. Fire glass looks like crafting marbles, but fire glass is specially tempered to withstand flame. The crafting marbles with crack and pop – glass marbles flying out of your fire are dangerous! • When you’re finished enjoying your fire for the evening, douse it properly. Most manufactured fire pits offer specific instructions for extinguishing a fire. Review the instructions before it’s time to put out your fire. Water can crack ceramic fire pits and some metal ones. • Allow the embers to burn out completely and then cool for 48 hours before disposal. If you must dispose of ashes before they are completely cooled, thoroughly soak them in water before putting them in a metal container. Do not assume the ashes are cold and pour them onto the ground (even into a hole) where leaves can blow onto them or the wind can stir up sparks. • Keep all propane outdoors at least ten feet away from doors and windows. Store propane cylinders upright in an outdoor, shaded area—never leave them in a vehicle or expose them to high temperatures. • Never smoke when handling a propane cylinder • Replace all propane cylinders that are old, rusty or showing signs of disrepair.
