For more than a century, Nantucket has been a refuge for the arts. Inspiration is everywhere: soughtafter sunrises and sunsets, barren beauty, picture-perfect side-streets, and endless vistas, there’s a view around every corner just waiting to be captured. Since 1945, the Artists Association of Nantucket has sought to support artists from near and far. Their dynamic mission of promoting island artists, providing art education, and collecting Nantucket’s art history ensured the burgeoning art colony’s future and the preservation of island art for posterity. Near the end of the 19th century, while most of America was left picking up the pieces left in the wake of Civil War, Nantucket was beginning to reinvent itself. The days of whaling had long gone by and, while much of the country was steeped in the smog of industry, Nantucket held tight to its colonial charm. An island-wide depression had taken hold, leaving much of the island, especially the wharves, in an utter state of decay. But there was a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Besides the beaches and natural beauty, the island attracted mainlanders longing to escape the smoke and cement that filled their cities. The days of Nantucket tourism had begun. The grim realness of bygone glory days was also attractive to many post-war artists, one of whom was nationally-known painter Eastman Johnson. Johnson purchased a home on the island in the late 1870s and went to work on what became his masterpieces, all using Nantucket subjects and settings. The works quickly gained national attention, and with that began the ever-increasing flow of artists who made the thirtymile journey across the Sound. The transition from a loose-knit group of likeminded artists and friends to a well-established and self-sufficient art colony can all be credited to one outstanding individual. Florence Lang, amateur artist, summer resident, and lover of the arts, became intrigued by the scattered remains of the old wharves that made up the once bustling waterfront. Dilapidated shacks and shanties sat untouched and unloved, but Lang had a vision for their future and for the future of the arts on Nantucket. Florence and her husband Henry began buying land along Washington Street Extension and South Beach Street, as well as portions of Swain’s Wharf and Easy Street, beginning in 1917 with their acquisition of South 10 nantucket HOME

Wharf. They got to work quickly, converting the many small structures into studios. Once completed, these were rented to artists for reasonable rates during the summer months, providing an affordable workspace for artists to socialize and discuss art, to experiment and create, and provided easy access to the many landscapes and sketching spots on-island. As well as with providing much needed studio space for resident and visiting artists, the Langs also brought about the island’s first gallery. In the early 1920s, they purchased an abandoned candle factory at the base of Commercial Wharf and converted the structure into The Candle House Studio. During the height of summer, solo and group exhibitions went on display there, and, after much success, another property caught her eye. An old cooper’s shop located near the yacht club was purchased, transported to Easy Street, and in 1924 opened and renamed The Easy Street Gallery. This quickly became the premier gallery on island well into the 1940s, and with that the stage was finally set for Nantucket to become an art hub of the northeastern United States. Other colorful fixtures of Nantucket art credited with the establishment of the art colony include Frank Swift Chase and Maud Stamm. If Lang was the planner and developer of the art scene, Chase, an incredibly influential plein air painter, was its dean. Chase offered over 30 years of instruction to island artists, including Florence Lang, and continued teaching well into the 1950s. Stamm, illustrator and painter, began the Sidewalk Art Show in 1930, the first event of its kind in the United States. Slated every August and on display for several days, this event was open to all available to enter: professional and amateur artists. With up to 300 works on display, hundreds of patrons flocked to Federal Street, where the works were displayed along the walls of the Atheneum. As written in the Inquirer & Mirror, Nantucket was dubbed “the cradle of the movement which has brought art … to the ‘man on the street.’” After Florence Lang’s death in 1943, the entire island art scene changed overnight. The Easy Street Gallery closed with no ready replacement, and both The Candle House and waterfront studios were put up for sale. The scene looked bleak for the first time in over continued on page 42...

Orchard Project Brings Heritage Flavors Back to Nantucket by Catherine Macallister With good weather and continued nurturing, apple and pear harvesting will soon be a part of the fall activities on Nantucket. Jordan McHugh, an orchardist currently working at Pumpkin Pond Farm, has a passion for growing and cultivating apples. She has a background in farming, and it was six years ago, while she was working at Maine Heritage Orchard, that she first “fell in love with the specific agriculture” of growing heritage apples. Using a former gravel pit, Maine Heritage Orchard created a suitable and sustainable growing environment for what started as 100 trees and now is home to hundreds of apple varieties. McHugh’s involvement with the Maine Heritage Orchard inspired her to propose the idea of a heritage orchard on our island to the Nantucket Land Bank in hopes that they would be willing to take on the project. The Land Bank came on board immediately when she pitched the idea to them in the early fall of 2018, and planning began. “The project took off right away,” said McHugh, “we spent that off-season looking for a location.” The Nantucket Land Bank granted land at Millbrook Road, and during the course of researching, planning, and obtaining the fruit trees, McHugh expanded the idea to include pear trees. “Pears actually do better on Nantucket, they are not susceptible to cedar apple rust,” she explained. Cedar apple rust is a fungus widespread in the northeast. The Nantucket Land Bank is a governmental organization started here in 1983, with the aim of preserving the island’s natural beauty. The Land Bank has worked to acquire, hold and manage key open spaces and provide access and protections to the lands of Nantucket to create outdoor recreational opportunities for all. The orchard project fits well with the Land Bank’s mission to create community spaces on Nantucket and, Land Bank’s Environmental Coordinator Rachael Freeman explained, “agriculture is one of our three chartered purposes: conservation, recreation, and agriculture.” “The Land Bank has been so supportive,” says McHugh, “It’s 100% been a team effort.” When McHugh first brought the project to the Land Bank, she was referred to Freeman, who facilitated the project review process and provided feedback on her proposal. Freeman also “helped to find a suitable location and worked on the design process,” McHugh explained. The plan proposed by McHugh spans several years from the initial cultivation of the land to the grand opening of the orchard. While they worked with the soil at the 12 nantucket HOME

Millbrook Road site to create a hospitable environment for the trees to grow and prosper, McHugh grafted trees from the Maine Heritage Orchard which she transported to the island with the help of the Land Bank. The installation of the fencing, shed, and site prep was completed by the Land Bank’s property maintenance staff,” said Freeman. As an organic farm, anything used to help control and maintain pests is organic and environmentally-friendly, making it important that McHugh and the Land Bank work together to keep diseases like cedar apple rust away from the young orchard. McHugh is well-versed in what to look out for, and there is no doubt that between her efforts and the Land Bank’s work this new orchard will be well-tended. “We are working with Jordan collaboratively,” says Freeman, “and if she needs the Land Bank staff or resources, we are here to help.” The first planting took place this May with 49 trees, each one a different variety of apple or pear. Some have already produced fruit. “We picked the fruit this season to give the trees more time to grow,” McHugh explained. If all goes well, organizers hope to open the harvest to the public in the next year or two. Millbrook Heritage Orchard features several varieties of pears including Bosc, Asian, and Magnus, a very sweet and juicy green pear. The heritage apples McHugh is growing there are native to New England. Heritage apples are heirloom varieties that been grown for centuries but practically disappeared from cultivation with industrial agriculture. These apples have more complex flavors than the usual varieties found in grocery stores, are naturally more disease resistant, and are better for baking, cooking, and cider. Some of the varieties of apples included in the Millbrook Heritage Orchard are Baldwin, which McHugh called “a Massachusetts native and historically classic apple”; another Massachusetts apple called Starkey; Northern Spy, which is tart, crisp, and perfect for pies; and Kingston Black, which McHugh describes as “good fresh eating and famous for cider.” “And,” she added, “I’m really excited about Opalescent: it’s so good! It’s a small red apple with red flesh and great eating.” Growing apples is not an entirely new phenomenon for Nantucket, but it is one that has not been practiced or sustained for quite some time. There are private orchards as well as trees at The Oldest House and Our Island Home, as well as trees scattered across the island. According to Debra A. McManis’ book Town Farm & Country Commons: Farming on Nantucket During the Nineteenth continued on page 83...

Marla Ceely Lamb Cancer Travel Fund Helping the Nantucket community since 1992

Island living has both its joys and challenges. Never does the challenge become more apparent than when individuals are diagnosed with cancer. First rate medical care is here on the island, but many patients must still travel off island for more specialized treatment and care. Time away from home and work and travel expenses add up quickly. The Marla Ceely Lamb Fund was created to ease some of the financial burden so that patients and families can focus on getting well. The Fund depends on generous community support to sustain it. “The Marla Lamb travel fund saved my life. Weekly sometimes bi-weekly trips would have been put on credit cards because I wasn’t working while I was healing from surgery. You don’t realize how draining it can be on your finances even if you have insurance. There are all the extra expenses and the travel is monumental when you live 30 miles out at sea.” “The support is more than financial. The fund was a help with the added financial burden associated with treatments, but was also a window into the generous nature of our community. Cancer touches so many in our community and the community responds.”

To receive assistance or to support the Fund with a donation, please call Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON) at 508-825-8325, visit www.pascon.org, or email info@pascon.org.

4 BEDROOM HOME OFFERED FURNISHED/TURNKEY A circa 1920s photograph in the Nantucket Historical Association archives depicts horses in the snow in front of Wyers Livery Stable. The stout little building, aptly named “Red Barn Door,” is recognizable today - from the outside, anyway - with the original transom windows above the sliding barn doors and three perfect square apertures through which the equine residents used to peer out to the street. But not so when those doors open. The structure, which dates from 1887, has been completely and boldly reimagined, the result of a masterful collaboration between the owner and island-based BPC Architecture Founding Principal Joe Paul.

AAN Celebrates 75 Years continued from page 10

20 years. Lang’s legacy was partially preserved with the purchase of the Candle House and several studios which were later used again as affordable rentals. This was thanks to Ruth Haviland Sutton, a fellow artist and an important promoter of the art colony. She worked to maintain the roots of the arts, saying, “I like it too well to ever change. We are a congenial group … and the ocean is our back door.” Then, in 1944, there was more bad news on the horizon. The Great Atlantic Hurricane was on the path to produce some of the strongest winds in memory to wreak havoc on the northeast, and when it turned southwest of Cape Cod, Nantucket was in the heart of the devastation. With sustained winds at over 150mph, some several downtown buildings had their roofs sheared off completely: one was the abandoned Thomas Macy Warehouse on Straight Wharf. Everett U. Crosby, chairman of the nonprofit Nantucket Foundation, could see the ruined building from his second story office window at Zero Main Street. He convinced his foundation’s board to purchase the warehouse in order to replace the lost gallery on Easy Street and the role it played as the island’s center for the arts. Renovations were soon underway and in just 6 months, at 3:30pm on July 1, 1945, the Kenneth Taylor Gallery opened its doors to the public. That year, riding a wave of success after the storm, a handful of artists and patrons at the center of the scene formed the Artists Association, and their dynamic mission of promoting island artists, providing art education, and collecting Nantucket’s art history insured the art colony’s future and the preservation of art for posterity. In 1950, less than five years after the inception of the AAN, the modernist artists known as the 45 Group consolidated with the association’s traditionalists. This ushered in a new season for island art. The AAN assumed the entire exhibition schedule for the Kenneth Taylor Galleries, and a decade later, after having taken many forms since its first trial run in 1947, the Artist-Patron plan evolved into the association’s main fundraising auction and social event. It was a surefire way to both support and award artists while helping to attract the some 7,500 seasonal visitors to their galleries and exhibitions. More artists continued to establish themselves 42 nantucket HOME

throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, including Nantucket’s next influential art instructor Philip Burnham Hicken. In 1977, the AAN further expanded their community outreach with the opening of its first educational workshop with classes for adults and children in ceramics, painting, and printmaking. In 1997, after serious fundraising by patrons and artists, the AAN was finally able to build their own gallery at 19 Washington Street, and there it stands today. The Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery, a two-story exhibition space located a block from Main Street in Nantucket’s Cultural District, showcases fine art, with a year-round schedule of AAN member shows by established artists and emerging local talent. This gallery is also the venue for artist demonstrations, student shows, art auctions, and community-oriented events that include exhibitions open to all island artists. One of the most recent leaps in the evolution of the AAN happened just five years ago in 2015. With the growth of classes and workshops serving the island community, AAN renovated 24 Amelia Drive as the Visual Arts Center, opening the doors to a new era The Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Dr. of art education on Nantucket. The Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive is host to many opportunities for artists of all skill levels. The purchase of the building in December of 2013 was made possible by a $480,000 grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. These grants are awarded to cultural organizations for facilities projects with demonstrated benefit to the local economy and transformative impact to the community served. Renovations were complete in less than two years, and on June 19, 2015, the community was welcomed inside to view the Nantucket Artbook Project Exhibition, a community-based art project in which participants created their own art books. The addition of the Visual Arts Center significantly expanded the scope of the AAN and, with it, their ability to serve our island community. With more than 1,300 students annually starting at just 18 months of age, it has helped artists of all ages to learn and grow like never before. Coming in at an impressive 9,000 square feet, the center is home to studios for adults and children, ceramics studios with pottery wheels and kilns, digital learning labs, libraries, and galleries. There are also studios and apartments for rent to artists-in-residence. During 2020, in spite of all of the challenges that came with it, the Artists Association staff and members continued on page 64...

AAN Celebrates 75 Years continued from page 42

are as busy as ever ringing in the organization’s most marvelous milestone to date: their 75th Anniversary. From spring to winter, old traditions and new ones have made the island’s love of the arts more apparent than ever before. Planning for the 75th anniversary celebrations was underway long before the spring quarantine. One of the highlights of the year, the AAN was thrilled to complete a major acquisition project of more than 100 priceless pieces from the original art colony. All of the art in this collection was donated, including two paintings by Frank Swift Chase. “This project began a few years ago in anticipation of our anniversary this summer,” says AAN’s Art Director Robert Frazier, a published author and accomplished painter himself. “I was completely overwhelmed by the generosity of serious collectors, patrons, and the artist’s families. They understood my urgency for keeping these artworks protected.” A selection of these original works are on display in a Preserving the Future exhibit in the Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive, and the public is welcome to stop by and view them through Columbus Day weekend. The entire art colony acquisition project is catalogued and illustrated in a brand new art history 64 nantucket HOME

book written by Frazier entitled Born From A Hurricane, 75 Years of the Artists Association of Nantucket. The book is available to purchase at the Visual Arts Center and on the AAN’s website nantucketarts.org. In addition to Preserving the Future, the AAN has kept their calendar filled with events all season long. They took their Spring Sweep Auction online on April 10. And, this year, in one of many pandemic pivots, the AAN brought their annual gala auction fundraiser home. This At-Home Gala Silent Auction was a resounding success, exceeding their fundraising goal of $25,000 by over $6,000. With thanks to NCTV, the auction was broadcast to bidders around the island, country, and the world through a live telethon and six-day online auctioning of island art. Auction guests on Nantucket enjoyed a delicious dinner for up to ten guests courtesy of Island Kitchen in the comfort of their own homes. During the Gala, the AAN recognized one member island artist for his decades of dedication to supporting the arts and the AAN. Robert Frazier began his art career, quite literally, on the ground floor of the AAN. “I started as a janitor,” he recalls, “I cleaned the bathrooms, and in less than a year I was an artist.” That year was 1974, and Frazier got to work honing his eclectic style, which he describes as sloppy impressionism. “My style varies from sci-fi painting to abstracts, but mostly landscape paintings like my continued on page 66...

mother,” he says. “I am basically plein air painter—I’m used to painting quickly with unpracticed strokes.” Frazier takes this approach both in the landscape and in the studio. When Frazier’s art was beginning to take shape, the scene was quite different. “In the early 70s, there certainly weren’t as many galleries,” he recalls. He remembers what he calls a kind of conflation of the arts in the 1980s, when things really started blossoming. “Nantucket is not just about fine arts. There are so many talented authors, jewelers, filmmakers — everything.” At the end of the 1990s, Bobby Frazier went on to become president of the AAN for 5 years until 2004, when he started on a new path as Art Director for the original Nantucket Magazine. Today, he is back at the AAN as Art Director, where he manages the Permanent Collection and oversees the hanging of present-day exhibitions, an art in and of itself, at the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street and at other AAN events. “I learned a lot over the course of some years about how to hang shows — some paintings just talk to each other,” Frazier said, smiling. Even AAN’s in-person exhibits this year have an online component: art from each scheduled show goes online the week after the gallery show opens so that people who did not come to the Cecelia Joyce &

Seward Johnson Gallery, which reopened in July, can purchase their favorites from the AAN website. “We’ve kept our longstanding traditions,” Frazier adds, “and no matter what happens for next year we will certainly hold these events.” Also new this year, in a collaboration with five downtown businesses, is Main Street Live. Conceived by AAN board member, artist, and exhibition committee chair Robert Miklos, this ongoing exhibition features island art in the front windows of four Main Street businesses: Hingham Savings at 35 Main Street, Raveis Real Estate at 17 Main Street, Rogers|Gray at 53 Main Street, and Murray’s Toggery Shop at 62 Main Street. Miklos was trying to find a way to gain more exposure for the AAN. “I was thrilled by the enthusiasm and cooperation expressed by Nantucket merchants for our Main Street Gallery project,” said Miklos, “this collaboration demonstrates their understanding and appreciation of the impact the arts have on our community for both visitors and residents.” Main Street Live will remain on display through the month of September, and perhaps later into the fall. All works are available to purchase, and those interested in doing so may call Peter Greenhalgh at 508228-0294. The history of the AAN is a long and storied, and, were it not for the foresight of its founders, they might have never survived the storms. By expanding their scope throughout the decades and transforming amid many crises, the AAN has made and continues to make an everlasting mark on the island of Nantucket.

Orchard Project continued from page 12

Century, apple growing “went in and out of favor.” McManis describes island farmers as having more of a proclivity towards pears— the “fancier” fruit—or quince, a combination pear and apple. Farming in general was in decline starting in the 1900s, and fewer fruit trees were cultivated on-island. The goal is that Nantucket’s Millbrook Heritage Orchard will become a community orchard that also teaches visitors about the kinds of apples available for being picked and their history. Part of what makes heritage apples so unique is their window of availability: “We will have fruits that ripen over time,” says McHugh, noting that picking times will start in early August and could run through early December. The orchard will be a “family-friendly fall activity and provide an opportunity to enjoy the tradition of apple-picking without leaving the island,” said Freeman. Not only will families be able to enjoy harvesting their own apples, but they will be able to be a part of the “farm-to-table and foraging movements,” she added. Even though this exciting experience is still a year or two away, Jordan McHugh’s passion for the project is infectious: “This is a very cool project—I’m so lucky!” she said, “I love orchard work.” The organic Millbrook Heritage Orchard will be a valuable addition to the island, engaging the community in the history of heirloom apples and pears, and helping to restore historic culinary delights.
