Nantucket Harbor comes alive in the summer months with boat, yachts, and the ever busy ferries bringing throngs of people to and from our island. On one such passage “back to America,” I sat behind a chattering family with two young kids who were learning the lore of the penny that has captivated many travelers. As they hurried out of their seats and towards the deck, one of the other passengers close by said, “Make a wish,” to the youngsters in the family, “it’s the only way to come back.” One penny tossed at Brant Point as you pass the lighthouse, and you’re guaranteed a safe and successful return to Nantucket. This is just one example of the legends and lore that have shaped Nantucket and color the experiences we have on the island.
Stories of Maushop and the Creation of Nantucket Back in the beginnings of Nantucket, when the Wampanoags first inhabited the island, there was a story of the how Nantucket came to be. A great giant from Wampanoag legend named Maushop (Moshup/Maushope) who once inhabited Cape Cod became angry when his moccasins filled with sand. Irritated, Moshup kicked off one moccasin, which flew through the air and landed in the water, creating Martha’s Vineyard. Frustrated with the sand still in his other moccasin, he kicked his second shoe even farther, creating Nantucket. A second story of Nantucket’s creation also involves the giant Maushop and his proclivity to smoke a pipe, especially after a great feast that usually involved eating a whale or two. Legend has it that Maushop was living on Martha’s Vineyard when two locals, Nanina and Waposset, approached him for help. Nanina’s father refused to accept Waposset as a suitable marriage prospect for Nanina. Maushop dug a deep hole in the ocean and filled it with stones. While considering the issue, Moshup smoked his pipe; afterwards, he emptied the contents atop the pile of stones and once the smoke cleared, the island of Nantucket could be seen. Another legend with Maushop as the main character tells of where The Gray Lady’s fog originated. This is part of a legend of a great humaneating bird that preyed on the people of Cape Cod, scooping up children and carrying them 10 nantucket HOME
away to an unknown location. In fear, the town mothers called upon Maushop to investigate the whereabouts of the bird and their children. Maushop waded into the water and discovered an unknown island where he found the remains of the children stolen by the bird. He sat down and took a pensive smoke from his pipe, shrouding Nantucket in fog.
The Legend of Wauwinet Before the arrival of English settlers, Wampanoags occupied Nantucket. Lore has it that the island was split into the east and west sides and that the two populations did not agree and often fought. Two rival sachems, Wauwinet and Autopscot, were engaged in warfare when Autopscot fell in love with Wonoma, Wauwinet’s daughter. Wonoma, a talented healer, came to know Autopscot when she had been granted permission to travel to his side of the island to help cure a deadly disease sweeping through Autopscot’s people. Wonoma and Autopscot secretly promised themselves to one another, and when Wonoma learned of her father’s plans to attack Autopscot and his men, she stole away in the night to warn him. Autopscot was able to thwart the attack by going directly to Wauwinet and asking for peace while also asking for Wonoma’s hand. While Wauwinet was initially angered, he eventually agreed that peace should be restored between the two sachems. After ending the wars, the Wampanoags lived in harmony until the arrival of the settlers. “The Legend of Wauwinet” was the title of a poem based on this legend, written by Charlotte P. Baxter in 1888. Baxter emphasizes Wonoma and her powers as a healer and the role she plays in this legend.
Maria Mitchell Saving the Methodist Church Famed Nantucketer Maria Mitchell was one of the first women to discover a comet using a telescope and the first woman to work as a professional astronomer in the United States. In addition to her many documented accomplishments, she is also rumored to have saved the Methodist Church during the Great Fire of 1846. cated on Main Street, and it destroyed a third of downtown Nantucket along with the wharves and ships docked there before it could be stopped. The Atheneum, shops, and homes were burned down, and the event marked a sharp decline in Nantucket’s economy. During the night of July 13 into the early hours of July 14, the ruinous fire was headed for the Methodist Church. In an effort to stop the fire, it was proposed that the Methodist Church be blown up with gunpowder to break the fire’s path. It is said that Maria Mitchell stood on the steps of the church, certain that there would be a change in wind, and challenged the group to sacrifice the Methodist Church while she remained on the steps. Evidently, the wind changed, and the church was saved. While there is no official documentation that Mitchell boldly stood on the steps, the church was spared and remains the only wooden structure in the heart of downtown Nantucket that was not ruined by the Great Fire of 1846.
A Sea Serpent in the Waters Around Nantucket Living on an island, it’s easy to wonder what lurks in the water beyond typical marine life of fish, whales, sharks, and seals. Are there mermaids or monsters or just familiar sea creatures?

printed his report, which was then confirmed by another man sure that he saw the same monster. Next, giant footprints were spotted on a Nantucket beach, and word spread that they belonged to the sea serpent that had been reported. A New York zoologist denied that the print could belong to such a sea monster, claiming that not only was the claim unsupported by the pattern but that creation of the prints would not match those of a mammal from the sea. Islanders didn’t have to wait long before they saw the mysterious sea serpent one day, floating in the ocean before ending up on Coatue. The “sea monster” was a hoax: a giant hoax, created by local artist Tony Sarg, who owned a Curiosities shop downtown. The whole affair was picked up in newspapers in America and brought a lot of attention to Nantucket. Sarg’s sea serpent balloon was featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of a number of balloons he created for the event.
The Tale of the Tuckernuck Yoho

In 1833, the sloop Fame set course for Massachusetts Bay, where her crew hoped to find a sea serpent in the waters. Looking back on the documents from the ship’s log, you can make out “sea serpent” along one of the pages. Their adventure and mission did not yield a sea serpent, but instead several mackerel. Perhaps it was the accounts of the Gloucester fisherman in 1817 that inspired the search for the great sea serpent, but after the Fame returned empty handed, there was less of a buzz about the mythical creature. More than a century later, in 1937, a local Nantucketer was certain that he saw a sea serpent in the waters of Nantucket and ran to the newspaper to report his sighting. Reluctantly, the paper 74 nantucket HOME
Hidden in the tangles and bushes of a discreet area on Tuckernuck Island, sits the Tuckernuck Yoho. The gargoyle statue is a symbol of a mythical beast—part bird, part snake with a single cloven hoof—that legend says comes alive at night. Its distinct “yooo-hoo” cry can be heard on dark foggy nights luring travelers to its lair, where they will never be seen again. According to a tale from Gertrude Dunham, a student in 1921, the legend of the Yoho was first realized on Tuckernuck. Her story describes the way that Nantucket and Tuckernuck supposedly drifted apart, creating the sort of mythical landscape of Tuckernuck: the perfect place for the Yoho’s lair to be found. The mythical creature settled on Tuckernuck, finding its way to Nantucket every so often to steal away wayward travelers and children from the shores at night. It has never been seen fully, but those who claim to have encountered it tell of “a large beak” and “cloven hooves.” The Yoho is said to leave the imprint of a single cloven hoof in the sands along the shore, a sign that it has been out hunting for its next victim. When it is not on Tuckernuck, the Yoho seems to be primarily associated with Madaket. continued on page 104...

“The Tuckernuck Yoho� was also the first and only newspaper printed on Tuckernuck in 1901, and featured the legend behind its namesake. The Yoho was described as an “antediluvian monster� with a yell like “a cross between the bellow of a mad bull, the howl of a wolf, and a siren whistle with a vague half human note through it all.� Legend has it that the Yoho’s name must not be spoken at night for fear that you will draw it closer, especially during the late fall and early winter, when the beast is most active. It is said to be responsible for quicksand pits and mires that pop up, capturing the most well-traveled individuals who usually avoid those pitfalls. Its call “haunts the hearer forever,� according to “The Tuckernuck Yoho,� although the newspaper also points out that many visitors to Tuckernuck do not believe in the legend. Local Nantucketers have grown up with story of the Yoho—different versions are passed down depending on who tells the tale. Many believe that the creature comes out of the fog on Tuckernuck and in Madaket to snatch up ill-behaved chil-
dren. Some say he is the gargoyle on Tuckernuck brought to life to capture anyone who wanders alone at night. Some, like Brian Cullen of the RawBar Yoho, have heard that the Yoho lives on Coatue and flies over to Tuckernuck to steal children behaving badly then returns to his Nantucket lair, leaving mysterious tracks in the sand that then disappear. Despite the valiant efforts of locals, the Yoho has yet to be captured in a photograph, but the legends remain and many still tell tales of his appearances and nefarious ways. The cry of the Yoho and its varying descriptions are all a part of the mystery that may lead you to find the gargoyle statue on Tuckernuck. The statue’s true origin is unconfirmed, but many believe it “flew in� from the Hancock Tower in Boston. No matter how the statue found its way to Tuckernuck, it serves to remind visitors that the mysterious creature could appear. While many have searched for the Yoho, no one has ever captured a picture of its true form. Whether you believe in its existence or not, be sure to keep your ears open the next time you go for a late Fall walk: you may just hear the unearthly cry of the Yoho.
