Sharing the Gift of Music with Nantucket by C. Oscar Olson Music is a magical thing. It can soothe and empower, bring back memories, or take us away completely. Something so simple as organized sound and silence can stir us, shape us, and even make us move. Before all of our superficial and deep seated differences as human beings comes this inexplicable commonality. On our island, the Nantucket Community Music Center has been working for decades to bring us closer to this profound feature we all share. The Center got its start in 1975, and at that time it was called the Nantucket Chamber Music Center. They put down roots at 11 Centre Street, the building where Nantucket Preservation Trust remains today. Founded by Hans Tausig and Leonard Shure, the Nantucket Chamber Music Center shared its second floor space in Sherburne Hall with the Nantucket Preservation Trust during the summer months. The cramped quarters provided little to no storage, no rehearsal or recital space, and no room to grow. “The opening of 56 Centre Street was essentially a dream come true,” explained Andrea Wulffleff, director of operations at the NCMC. Tausig, a German-born survivor of the Holocaust, had a deep love for the island. In addition to founding 8 nantucket HOME
the NCMC, he was a lifelong member of the Nantucket Historical Association, the Maria Mitchell Association, and the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. He held memberships in the Artists Association of Nantucket, the Nantucket Atheneum, and the Nantucket Yacht Club, and he served on the Board of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation for many years. He was a member of many orchestras around the world and toured Romania and Hungary, which, at the time, were still behind the Iron Curtain. Tausig passed away in January of this year. Shure began his performing career at the age of five and went on to be a featured soloist in virtually every symphony orchestra in the United States. He was an avid surfcaster and began coming to Nantucket in 1933. Those on-island at the time did not know of his incredible musical ability. It was a secret he couldn’t keep quiet, though, and, after being overheard practicing in his Surfside home, he was asked to play at a benefit for the Arts Council. The windows and doors were flung open as the audience grew and filled the streets— during the 56-minute-long Beethoven variation, it was said that one could hear a pin drop. continued on page 32...

Nantucket’s Four-Legged Friends You only need to look around to notice that dogs are very popular pets on Nantucket. You see them at job sites and in offices, strolling downtown, taking the ferries to and from the island, walking with their humans on many of the island’s trails, and even lounging and playing in the surf on island beaches. It’s been said that the most common dog on Nantucket Island is a lab named Cisco. Nantucket Town Clerk has issued
330 dog licenses so far this year.

Warm weather brings out the best Nantucket has to offer, and it’s a lot more than just the beaches. At the time of its inception, the school’s offerings centered solely on piano lessons. Though piano is still the most popular component today, NCMC’s programming encompasses so many more musical instruments: from guitar, bass, and ukulele, to banjo, drums, and accordion. They offer classes on beat making and studio recording, voice, tin whistle, and more. Students range in age from 5 to 80 and older, many lifelong learners. The wide range in ages at the school provides vision and guidance for the younger generation just getting started. “It is so nice to have the combination of ages,” says Wulffleff. “It’s a chance for the kids to see where this road can take them.” Celebrating her first year with the NCMC, Wulffleff was previously the executive director at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. “I came to Nantucket for the Lightship Basket Museum,” she recalls, “but needed a little change. The Nantucket Community Music Center sounded like a unique challenge.” She has a few roles at the Center, and she loves everything about her job. “I’m surrounded by such talent, it’s just so inspiring.” When the NCMC found a new home in 2014 at 56 Centre Street, their programming potential was taken to a new level. They share the building with the Nantucket Community School, which offers classes and enrichment for children and adults. “We love it here,” says Wulffleff, “there are lots of fun opportunities to work together on things.” The building was originally constructed as a private home in the early 1840s by Harrison Gray Otis Dunham, one of Nantucket’s most successful whaleoil merchants. Through the years, the Greek Revival style house was used both as a year-round and a summer residence, before being converted into a 12-room guest house. It was known by many different names over the years: The Harrison Grey House, Haddon Hall, and Judge Dunham’s House. The property was also part of the Jared Coffin House Inn for decades. Nine years ago, 56 Centre was purchased by ReMain Ventures. ReMain Nantucket and ReMain Ventures were founded by philanthropist Wendy Schmidt to support the economic, social, and environmental vitality of the island of Nantucket. In addition to ReMain Nantucket providing grants and sponsorships to support sustainable and cultural initiatives across the island, ReMain Nantucket has worked in conjunction with ReMain Ventures to revitalize the downtown district year-round through the preservation of historic continued on page 39...

buildings that are home to a mix of nonprofit and commercial businesses. The renovated building at 56 Centre Street has been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council through its LEED program at the Gold level. Among the sustainable practices incorporated are materials re-use, waste reduction, a geothermal heating and cooling system, rainwater re-capture, high-efficiency lighting fixtures, timers, and occupancy sensors. Though the school has changed over the years, their mission has remained the same. By fostering and supporting music education and performance opportunities for young people and adults, they aim to enrich cultural life island-wide. NCMC believes that music has the power to transform individuals and our island as a whole. The school envisions a community with access to all aspects of music through teaching, learning, performing, and listening. Blending in with the historic architecture at the top of Centre Street, the building’s classic construction reveals no clues to the wonderful and modern activities happening within. The front door opens to reveal the grand staircase original to the building, repaired and restored in place, crowned by a unique and beautiful chandelier. The first room you’ll encounter
is a spacious parlor to the left, one of the only rooms that isn’t soundproofed. This space is home to small recitals, presentations, and rehearsals, and the music made within can be heard moving about the building. Upstairs are classrooms along with a vast library of music, an irreplaceable asset for music teachers and students as well as visiting artists who might be searching for a score of written music or are just in the mood to peruse. The steps down to the basement of the center will transport you to a different place entirely, with the soft glow of ever-shifting colors of LED lights on the ceiling being reflected by the high sheen of the glossy white walls. Portholes in walls and doors give glimpses inside studios and classrooms. During construction in 2012, the building was lifted off of its foundation to make this vision of a space possible, and with just one look that won’t come as a surprise. Floyd Kellogg, NCMC’s resident music producer and mix engineer, runs the production studio located in this other-worldly underground space. He also teaches group classes on music production. A resident of Nantucket for nearly a decade, Kellogg originally came to the island while on tour. He found a home at NCMC after their move to 56 Centre Street. gaps. “Our classes are a great way to fill kids’ time during cancelled summer events and programs.” The staff at NCMC is comprised of many talented individuals with a passion for music and teaching. Most of them wear multiple hats, too. “Every time I turn around I see a hidden talent,” Wulffleff says fondly. Jason Sullivan is a busy local landscaper who also teaches guitar and drums at the Music Center. Sullivan plays many American styles of music like Motown, Blues, Jazz, and Rock, enabling him to bring real life performing skills to his teaching. He has a unique skill set for sharing his love for music: “After students learn basic skills and some songs,” he says, “I enjoy working with them on improvisation and ear training,” an approach he learned from Boston-based jazz pianist Gil Aharon. “Outside of the Music Center, I am busy with my landscaping business, and I am a longtime member of Ecliff and the Swingdogs. I also am a part of the African Meeting House Jazz before Sunset Series, where fellow Music Center faculty and myself perform jazz standards.” Offering online classes isn’t the only pandemic pivot made by the NCMC. In late April, the first of a series of online lectures was launched. “I’m learning that musicians don’t like to use the word lecture,” laughs Wulffleff, “so they’re not lectures, but rather talks on a wide variety of topics centered on music.”

The first in this Nantucket Tempo series launched on April 30 is a conversation between Francisco Noya and Dr. Greta Feeney on the El Sistema music education program in his native Venezuela, and how online music education is thriving at NCMC amid the pandemic. Noya is the Music Director & Conductor of the New Philharmonic in Newton, Music Director and Conductor of the Boston Civic Symphony, and Resi-
dent Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. He lives on Nantucket with his wife Beth Hallett, Deputy Superintendent of Nantucket Schools. All Nantucket Tempo talks are available to view for free on the NCMC’s YouTube page: Nantucket Music Center. On July 21st, a wonderful conversation went live with Mason Abby about how a violin is made—how the materials, shape, and craftmanship play in to the sound of the instrument. “We’re trying to cover topics that will enhance music appreciation from all angles,” Wulffleff remarked. Today, the NCMC is uniquely positioned as the only island organization that is solely dedicated to listening, learning, teaching, and performing music. It is a service they’ve been dedicated to for more than 40 years, and surely will be for many years to come. Their resource is a roster of highly qualified, dedicated instructors offering year-round programs that cultivate music instruction and appreciation, and have worked to create a strong musical environment on Nantucket. One that crosses age, ethnic, social, and economic differences. A love of music knows no bounds, and the Nantucket Community Music Center is proving that every day on Nantucket. “One of the hardest parts of COVID-19 has been feeling distanced from the mission. Not hearing the piano and not seeing students was a challenge for every one of us.” On June 13th, the Center’s first recital of the season went live for free on YouTube, and all of her doubts disappeared. “The recital in June brought it all back.” Seeing that all the talent and joy was alive and well welcomed in all the excitement and fun another season brings. celebrated their 75th year and honored beloved Nantucket artist Robert Frazier at a special At Home Dinner & Auction. The purchase of tickets and tables went directly to supporting the AAN in celebration of their milestone anniversary. Combining television and internet, Rafael Osona conducted a live auction and dinner was delivered to the Nantucket homes of participating donors to preserve this spirit of the annual dinner gala. In addition, AAN staff organized an online silent art auction that exceeded their fundraising goal. Celebrations were had and a camaraderie was achieved through taped videos and live streaming. AAN’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street is now again open to the public for exhibitions, and they are continuing to offer opportunities to buy art online at nantucketarts.org.
Though a few island museums are now open to the public, some of have moved their programming completely online with virtual tours and live streaming. Since the beginning of June, the Maria Mitchell Association has been offering their Science Speaker Series online: “it is on Zoom and is free to the public,” explained MMA’s Jascin Finger. “Participants register online.” As of August 1, the association is also beginning to offer in-person nature walks and other events. Staff at museums are focusing on what they can do rather than what they can’t. “Throughout this crisis, we remind visitors that they are encouraged to enjoy the peace and tranquility found at many of the historic properties, such as the beautiful gardens of Hadwen House and Greater Light, or the open spaces by the Old Mill and Oldest House,” says NHA’s Ashley Santos. The Nantucket Historical Association has taken a creative and fun approach in opening their Nantucket Whaling Museum: visitors follow a yellow cobblestone path through the museum, with reminders to social distance. The NHA’s premier summer fundraiser, Nantucket by Design, was presented virtually for 2020, still preserving the engaging lectures, lively panel discussions, and even their popular Design Luncheon and All-Star Designer Private Dinners with food and wine delivered to Nantucket homes of donors.
Unable to open their doors at all this year, Egan Maritime’s Shipwreck and Lifesaving museum has “turned the museum inside out” by placing around their property a dozen full-color storyboards detailing the museum’s history and a few of the fascinating exhibits normally found inside. With newly added picnic tables, you can pack a lunch, see the sights, and enjoy the view from beautiful Polpis. Nantucket’s Lightship Basket Museum brought their annual Baskets and Bubbly fundraiser online with a virtual auction. For nine days starting August 1st, bidders competed from the comfort of home on original paintings, homemade baskets, jewelry, nights on the town, and more. The much loved Dreamland Theater brought the big screen outside for the first time this summer after being unable to operate as usual. “We were moving along at 70mph, then five days later, on March 17, all of our planning came to an abrupt halt. Everything had stopped,” recalls Joe Hale, the theater’s executive director. A call was quickly convened and the idea of doing a drive-in was soon hatched. Their $140,000 funding goal was met in under four days completely through crowd-funding, a feat that delighted the theater and the island. Though it’s not open yet, The Dreamland also made some changes to the second floor of the theater and they are offering private movie screenings in the indoor theatres with a movie
of your choice. The Dreamland’s pandemic pivot for their DreamBelievers Celebration was a DreamBelievers Auction held at the end of July. For this reimagined event, donors purchased tickets to the screening of a pre-release film shown at the Dreamland Drivein and were supplied with special picnic dinners in keepsake picnic baskets. They were also invited to bid on specially designed experiences featuring celebrities like Elin Hilderbrand, David Gregory, and Chef Joseph Keller.
Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals hosted their first virtual event on July 31. They entertained with music, art, interviews and plenty of animals. Shorty award-winner and Instagrammer Steve Greig, @Wolfgang2242, told all about his menagerie of rescued senior animals. Local talent Donald Dallaire and Meredith Hanson performed, and they even had a live-action Puppy Bowl. The evening was hosted by shelter alum, Bob (the guinea pig). NiSHA has relied on their summer gala to raise nearly half of their operating funds each year. Continuing donations will also ensure their Shelter Stays in Place for 2020. Details at nishanimals.org.

With live theater paused, Nantucket’s White Heron Theater Company has brought some fantastic plays and performances to your computer or mobile device. Bring your home or your headphones to life by downloading a spooky series of original radio dramas called The Ghost Light Series. Referring to the tradition of leaving a lone light that stays lit between performances, it celebrates the day we can all once again gather before the stage. This series of podcasts is adapted and directed by Mark Shanahan from Blue Balliett’s book Nantucket Ghosts, 44 True Accounts and performed by award-winning White Heron actors.
Without doubt, Nantucket’s biggest event is the annual performance by the Boston Pops on Jetties Beach. For two decades, an audience of thousands has gathered on the shore for a fabulous concert, fantastic fireworks, and an all-around fun night out. Though this year the live events at Jetties Beach had to be cancelled, thousands tuned in to watch and listen to a special free performance of Boston Pops for 124 nantucket HOME
Nantucket on local channel 18, streaming on NCTV’s website, and on 97.7 ACK-FM. This celebratory broadcast of the Boston Pops for Nantucket featured musical performances by the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra as well as a newly created virtual piece and a pre-recorded fireworks display. The 45-minute show also featured Nantucket musicians and special video messages honoring the heroes among us. At 7:45 pm, everyone stepped outside, on-island and off, to “Clap for the Carers.” As the annual Pops concert is Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s biggest fundraiser, donations are more important this year than ever before: if you’d like to make a donation, visit nantuckethospital.org.
Now it its 18th year, Tim Russert’s Summer Groove is a night of fun and dancing to benefit the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club. This year, Groovegoers can join in the fun from home on Saturday, August 15 at 6pm. Tune in to local NCTV channel 18 or visit nantucketboysandgirlsclub.org to be part of the action.
Another great island event to be a part of on August 15 is the annual Autism Speaks Nantucket Walk. Get on your feet in your own homes, backyards, or neighborhoods by Walking Your Way in honor of this 14th Annual Nantucket Walk. Take part in their mission to promote solutions for the needs of people with autism and their families, including those in urgent need of resources right now, and drive our continued commitment to create a kinder, more inclusive world. The creativity and innovation of the pandemic pivots we’ve witnessed over the past few months has been astounding. We’ve all been taking lemons and making lemonade, and nothing beats lemonade during a hot Nantucket summer.
