• • • NANTUCKET by the Numbers U.S. PRESIDENTS WHO VISITED NANTUCKET We thank the Nantucket Historical Association for the historic photos reprinted here and for nearly all of the information. Many of these details are from an article by Erik Ingmundson printed in the Winter 2010 issue of Historic Nantucket. https://nha.org/research/nantucket-history/historic-nantucket-magazine/the-presidential-issue
If you include being on the presidential yacht docked in Nantucket waters as “visiting,” then
8 US Presidents have visited Nantucket Island since 1835.
John Quincy Adams, our 6th president who served from 1825-1829, visited in September of 1835. He and his son spent an afternoon on-island with James Athearn. They spent one night in a hotel on Main Street called Washington House that was owned by Athearn and run by Elisha Starbuck. The next night they stayed at lodgings offered by Betsey Cary in Siasconset.
Ulysses S. Grant, our 18th president who served from 1869-1877, visited in August of 1874. He arrived August 28th on the steamship River Queen, and disembarked at about 10am to enthusiastic cheers... “As the party fairly turned into the Main street the carriages passed between two lines of children from the Sunday schools, who gleefully waved their handkerchiefs and fairly stormed the Presidential carriage and its occupants with bouquets.” —I&M
President Grant and his party feasted on turkey, chicken, roast beef, lamb, ham, tongue, salads, lobster, dessert, fruit, wine jellies, and ice cream at the Ocean House (now the Jared Coffin House). As he returned to the steamship, Mr. Sanford briefly lost control of the horses pulling the carriage in which the president was riding. Once control was regained, President Grant opted to “trust their feet for the remainder of the distance.” —I&M

• • • NANTUCKET by the Numbers Chester A. Arthur, our 21st president who served from 1881-1885, visited in September of 1882. He arrived at Steamboat Wharf at 12 noon on September 7. President Arthur called on several residents, stopped by the Pacific Club Rooms, and traveled to Surfside on the Nantucket Railroad. Upon returning to town, he visited the Atheneum and then returned to the home of F.C. Sanford. He left that evening at 5pm.
Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd president who served from 1889-1893, visited in August of 1890. President Harrison traveled to Nantucket aboard the naval flagship Baltimore and arrived unannounced. “Shortly after noon the President…came on shore, and…took a short drive about town, and then to Siasconset, where a call was made at the residence of Senator Spooner.” —I&M
Woodrow Wilson, our 28th president who served from 1913-1921, visited in September of 1917. He was traveling aboard the presidential yacht Mayflower with his wife. They visited Nantucket to see their grandchildren and daughter, Frances B. Sayre, who had a summer cottage in Siasconset. The Nantucket School Superintendent dismissed students early that day to see the president. The president and his entourage departed from the Athletic Club pier at about 10 pm, where crowds gave him a “rousing ovation.”
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our 32nd president who served from 1933-1945, anchored his yacht Amberjack II in Nantucket Harbor in June of 1933. His cruise to his summer home in Campobello was rerouted due to a storm. President Roosevelt did not come ashore, but his son James did and toured the Whaling Museum.
John F. Kennedy, our 35th president who served from 1961-1963, anchored his yacht Honey Fitz in Nantucket Harbor in 1963. President Kennedy did not step foot on the island, but his children John and Caroline did come ashore with Secret Service, and they toured the Whaling Museum and stopped for ice cream.
William Jefferson Clinton, our 42th president who served from 1993-2001, visited in August of 1999. President Clinton and Hillary Clinton visited the home of Bob Matthews and attended a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s campaign for U.S. Senate held at the Bagley home.
U.S. PRESIDENTS WHO VISITED NANTUCKET BEFORE THEY WERE ELECTED PRESIDENT INCLUDE: President Donald Trump, our 45th president, 2017-2021 Visited in 2016 for a campaign fundraiser
President Joseph Robinette Biden, our 46th president, 2021President Biden and his family have visited Nantucket every Thanksgiving for nearly 40 years, since 1975. For many of those years, Biden (first as Senator then as Vice President) attended the Nantucket Tree Lighting on Main Street and participated in the Cold Turkey Plunge fundraiser for the Nantucket Atheneum at Children’s Beach.

A Nantucket Icon Returns to Main Street by Suzanne Daub For one year and one week—372 days—one of Nantucket’s iconic landmarks was missing from Main Street. On March 4 of 2020, Nantucket lost this beloved artifact when a motorist struck and broke the fountain that stood on Main Street for more than a century. On March 11, 2021, it was returned, fully restored to its spot in the middle of Lower Main, and on March 27, dedicated members of the Nantucket Garden Club christened it with a planting of daffodils and spring owers. Donated to the town in 1885, the fountain was originally installed at the top of Main Street. It was connected to a water main, and the round lower basin was used to water horses. Spigots higher up provided fresh water for people. Eight years later, when street lighting was installed, the fountain was moved to the bottom of Main Street and disconnected from the water main.
Extensive research done by Hillary Hedges Rayport, Chair of the Nantucket Historical Commission, revealed a number of little-known facts about the fountain, which she shared with us. The information she found reveals that there were at least two public fountains on Main Street in the 1880s. An article in a July 22, 1893 edition of The Inquirer & Mirror (from the online newspaper archives created and kept by the Nantucket Atheneum) mentions a special Town Meeting called to discuss relocating the fountain “on the Upper Square,” to which the Water Company had been supplying water free of charge, but wanted to begin to charge the town $100 per year. The article goes on to state “The offer is made that, should the fountain be relocated on the Lower Square, in place of the small one now in front of the Paci$c Club room, the annual water rent will be $75.” Further reference in continued on page 50...

the article to the second fountain reads “In case of the relocation, to set the smaller one on Orange street, near the residence of Mr. Allen Smith, and furnish water free during warm weather.” An article Rayport found in The Nantucket Journal dated August 3, 1893 reports that “the committee on fountains” voted to move the fountain in front of W.T. Devlan & Co.’s store “to some point in the middle of Main street between the Paci$c bank and the Paci$c club room... the exact locality has not yet been determined on, but the committee are thinking strongly of placing it opposite Federal street.” The article also con$rms that the fountain that was on the Lower Square was to be moved to Orange street “as suggested by the Wannacomet Water Co.” Rayport found another article published 30 years later about issues with the public fountain that had been moved to the Lower Square on Main Street. She shared with us this article from the Atheneum archives that was published in a July 21, 1923 edition of The Inquirer & Mirror. This article, actually more of an opinion piece, was entitled “Fountain in The Way of Traf$c. 50 nantucket HOME
Selectmen Perplexed.” and refers to the problem of traf$c congestion due to the fountain: “...if a team drives along from the northward, through South Water street, and the horse stops at the fountain for a drink, all traf$c coming from the north is held up until the horse is through and the driver chuckles to him to move along. The same thing occurs if a team drives up from lower Main street and the driver turns the horse in towards South Water street and stops at the fountain.” The article also covers some history, stating that the fountain was “$rst placed on Main street in 1882” close to the curb opposite Orange Street: “the fountain then quenches thirst of both man and beast, and four heavy iron drinking cups were fastened to chains which dangled from the bowl. Men and boys —and women, too— drank from those iron cups—germ laden we presume—but in those days there was not such a grand $ght against the poor little germ as there is today.” In 1932, the lower section of Main Street and the fountain there were dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Max Wagner, husband of Jennie Macy who was a descendant of one of the $rst English families to settle on Nantucket. Lt. Wagner was a member of the 26th Massachusetts Regiment who died of wounds he recontinued on page 51...

ceived $ghting in the Philippines as a result of the Spanish-American War. Over the decades, the Lt. Max Wagner Memorial Fountain has become a much photographed island landmark. Though the incident in March of 2020 was not the $rst time the structure had been damaged, it was the $rst time in recent memory that it had to be removed for such a length of time. DPW Director Robert McNeil explained that the wrought iron fountain had been repaired several times over the past century, but that this repair was a “complete restoration” done by Cassidy Brothers Forge, a restoration specialist in Rowley, Massachusetts. He also mentioned that it took a considerable amount of time between March and September of 2020 to negotiate an agreement with the insurance company to fund the repair. “Having the opportunity to do a full restoration is great, and I’m delighted to be a part of it,” McNeil commented, “I learned a lot during the procedure. “When I $rst arrived on the island, the paint on the fountain was chipped and fading. It was such a focal point, and I thought it would be a good idea to have it repainted, also Max Wagner’s plaque had not been serviced in a long time. So we made it one of the priorities to have it painted. We put the primer on it on a Friday… the amount of phone calls we got over the weekend…” McNeil chuckled “… it caused SUCH a stir. I was not expecting that. It was quite an introduction to Nantucket. In the end it looked great… up until it got hit.” During the time the fountain was missing, McNeil thought it was important to maintain something where the landmark stood until it could be replaced so that drivers did not get accustomed to the fountain not being there. Bartlett’s Farm donated an urn to have something more than sawhorses there, and the Garden Club members did their best with the substitute. It was in 1973, that the Nantucket Garden Club took on the responsibility for adorning the fountain seasonally and caring for the plantings. “We do it yearround,” explained Garden Club President Maryann Wasik, “it’s a labor of love for us, and quite an undertaking: getting the plants, putting them in, and making sure it gets watered—that’s one of the hardest parts, it gets quite dry during the summer months. We’re happy to do it...” Garden Club member Mary Gambee planted and cared for the fountain for many years, when there was no water available at the base of the fountain. Donna Hamel took over for Mary, and Jill Sandole continued on page 52...

started helping Donna and is now in charge of the efforts. March 11, 2021 was the perfect day for installing the restored fountain: dry with plenty of sunshine, warm for March, and no wind. The process took several hours, and involved careful assembly and replacing cobblestones around the base. Sixteen days later, island weather again cooperated as Heidi Drew and Jill Sandole, with assistance from Maryann Wasik, lined the basin, added soil, and planted dozens of daffodils Heidi had raised along with tulips, hyacinths, and other spring blooms. There are several videos and photos of the fountain installation and initial planting on Instagram @nantucketinsider

“The return of the fountain & plantings is a beautiful surprise of color and creativity that welcomes our community and many visitors from all over the world every day,” commented Garden Club volunteer Heidi Drew, who helps to “plant” the fountain during springtime. “It makes people smile.” Jill Sandole and Susan Balling recently replanted the fountain with summer annuals, and Dottie Gennaro will assist Jill in tending the plantings for the rest of the year. “We are absolutely thrilled to have the fountain back—it’s important to us,” Wasik added. Most island residents and many visitors have missed seeing the beautiful decorations in the historic fountain and are happy to see it back in place on Main Street. As Robert McNeil put it: the return of the fountain is “another sign of the good that is to come in 2021.”

HOW MUCH IS
MY HOME WORTH ? - THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A LOCAL BROKER -
In today’s digital age instant gratification is king; our brains are trained to take to the internet to research nearly anything that crosses our mind. An increasingly popular search has been home valuation via sites like Zillow.com and Trulia.com. While these sites certainly serve some purpose, often users aren’t reading the fine print and really understanding the limitations of these basic algorithms as they casually search for their home’s value. Potential buyers are also often disappointed when prices significantly vary from tools like Zillow’s Zestimate. Additionally, these numbers generally don’t match an appraiser’s valuation.
Enlisting the help of a local real estate broker has many benefits, first and foremost the knowledge of the inventory and local market conditions. A broker will visit your property and make note of its special features and amenities, its condition, and opportunities to add value. We know the things that make each and every neighborhood of Nantucket special – a perspective that can never be achieved through an algorithm. These observations, coupled with a comparative market analysis, will put you in prime position to take the most advantage of our strong market.

“Lara was a pleasure to work with on my recent transaction in the red hot Nantucket Real Estate market. Lara kept me updated at every turn from listing to contracting and negotiating right through to closing. I recommend her highly and would use her services again without question.” - Jamie, 2021 Home Seller
