Cross Examining Prejudice The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), in partnership with Theatre Workshop of Nantucket (TWN), present a staged reading of Twelve Angry Women on Thursday, September 24, and Friday, September 25, 2015, at 7 pm in the NHA’s Quaker Meeting House, 7 Fair Street. Based on Reginald Rose’s iconic courtroom drama Twelve Angry Men (originally written as a teleplay for CBS in 1954), Twelve Angry Women is about the deliberation of a female jury over a homicide trial. At the beginning, all the jurors are in agreement on a guilty verdict until one lone member, “Juror #8,” poses the question of reasonable doubt, creating one of the most compelling trial stories ever to take the American stage. “We are very excited to be highlighting the historic Quaker Meeting House with the Nantucket community and our friends at Theatre Workshop of Nantucket,” says Marjan Shirzad, NHA Director of Visitor Experience. “This historic property provides an intimate, evocative backdrop to a seminal piece of American theater, and we can't wait to see it come to life through the talented actors of the TWN." “Theatre Workshop of Nantucket is delighted to present a re-envisioned take on the classic Twelve Angry Men this fall with the NHA,” says Justin Cerne, TWN Artistic Director. “Ever relevant, Twelve Angry Women will challenge viewers and provoke insight for a new generation of audience members.” Constructed by the Society of Friends as a school in 1838, the Quaker Meeting House is the island’s last surviving meeting house. Purchased from the Friends by the NHA in 1894, it was used as the association’s first museum until the fireproof building was erected on Fair Street, now the NHA Research Library. In the 1940s, Quakers on Nantucket formed a worship group and began to meet informally once again in the meeting house. Space in this historic site is limited. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.nha.org/tickets or by calling 508-228-1894.

Fair & a Festival in One Weekend The weekend of September 19 and 20 is when islanders will celebrate the harvest of land and of sea, with both the Nantucket Maritime Festival and the Nantucket Island Fair being held this same weekend. Nantucket Maritime Festival is held from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, September 19 at Children’s Beach with additional activities at Brant Point. Admission is free, and participants can watch quarterboards being carved and scrimshanders at work, tour the harbor on the Shearwater, decorate a beach bucket, race a radio controlled boat, climb the Brant Point Lighthouse, and listen to live music by local musicians. The purpose of the Maritime Festival is to celebrate island life and maritime activities. Egan Maritime Institute has presented this festival for six years; Chuck Gifford is this year’s Honorary Festival Chairperson. This year the festival is bringing back family favorites from last year, such as a 4-way tug-of-war, harpoon throwing, racing mini boats in a rain gutter, and a shucking contest. Families can enjoy watching teams race boats they

have made from cardboard and other materials. Kids can make their own sand art, explore the touch tank, watch rope bracelets being made, and learn about the shellfish around Nantucket. New this year is the opportunity to tour the Tall Ship Lynx, come learn about the connection this ship has to Nantucket Island. Transportation will be available from the festival site at Children’s Beach to the activities at Brant Point. The Nantucket Island Fair is held on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20 from 10 am to 4 pm at the end of Tom Nevers Road. Admission is $5 per group of walkers and bicyclists or $15 per car. Live music, food stands, and the livestock tent will be available both days, as will most of the games, exhibitions, and information tables. Events and activities each day do vary. Home Run Derby, corn husking contest, and cupcake eating contest are planned for Saturday; judging of Nantucket’s biggest pumpkin, the dog show, skillet toss, and apple peeling contests will be on Sunday. New this year is a t-shirt tie-dying station, a photo booth, and tours of the valleys in the Tom Nevers area guided by writer and geo-historian Peter Brace. Both the Nantucket Maritime Festival and the Nantucket Island Fair offer a variety of fun ways to celebrate island life and community.

You Play This Game the Rest of Your Life by Robert P. Barsanti I watch them. They run across the parking lot in a clatter of cleats and mud. The helmet dangles from one hand and while the other grasps the ball. They are wearing practice shirts with tears and dirt ground into them. Their socks fall down to the tops of their cleats. The rank odor trails after them like a gas slick; sweat, boy, and a week in a locker. On the field, the quarterbacks are throwing to their receivers while the linemen sit and “stretch.” At the far end of the field, someone is shanking a ball deep into the cemetery. And they are so young. In the dark of the evening, when I can plan out the rest of the victories in my life, my mind casts back to the afternoons on the field of play. Then the years drop away and I believe that I could put Old 74, my practice jersey, back on over a pair of shoulder pads and take to the field. Then the intervening twenty-five years rise up chortling and coughing. Back when I had the chance to earn glory on the gridiron, I didn’t like football very much. I played on a team that won a single game each year I played on it. As each loss ticked off and our character built to remarkable heights, practice ground to a slog through a dozen unimaginative plays. Game day became a catalog of painful and embarrassing locker room rants and assaults by the tire salesmen and math teachers that were our coaching staff. By my senior year, our football team had become the occasion for the town to come out at watch the majorettes and our award winning marching band. “Boys,” the coaches promised us, “You’ll never play this game again. Never in your life will you get to do this.” When the final Thanksgiving game ended in wet wool and humiliation, I closed that book and put it on the top shelf. continued on page 17

I love fall when the kids are back in school and coming out to the Nantucket Field Station for nature walks. One of my favorite things to find along the beach and show them is Codium fragile, otherwise known as “dead man’s fingers.” Among the many common names for this, such as “green fleece,” “green sea fingers,” “green sea sponge,” and “Sputnik weed,” the fisherman’s title of “oyster thief” is self-evident when you see the piles of slipper shells (Crepidula spp.) attached to C. fragile washed up on the beach. C. fragile requires a rocky substrate, but a shell makes a perfect attachment point in a pinch. Inherently damaging to shellfish, C. fragile adheres to shells to serve as a home base. By wrapping its holdfast around shells, it impedes the locomotion and feeding of shellfish such as oysters, mussels, and scallops, and may dislodge them from the seafloor. As C. fragile gets a grip on a pile of slipper shells, before they know what’s up, they are up in the wrack line, slowly dying. When I bring groups of young kids down to the beach to see what lives there, they inevitably try to rescue as many of the slipper shells with the attached C. fragile that they can by throwing them back into the surf. I don’t tell them the natural balloon action and drag capacity of the C. fragile will bring those slippers shells right back to the same high and dry demise. The kids also love feeling the turgid green “dead man’s” fingers of C. fragile, even if it is kind of “gross.” C. fragile migrated to our waters attached to ship hulls, in ballast water, and through shellfish aquaculture from the Pacific waters around Japan via shipping ports in Europe, arriving here in the 1950s. It quickly spread up and down the coast and was seen first in Massachusetts in 1961. The species fouls shellfish beds and causes a myriad of impacts on shellfish communities, including clogging nets and dredges, which greatly increases dredge time and equipment failure for commercial scallopers. This species also causes a nuisance to humans when it accumulates on beaches and rots, producing a foul odor. C. fragile subsp. tomentosoides has been documented altering benthic (bottom) communities and habitats, causing serious environmental implications, and it is now listed as one of the most invasive species worldwide. Unfortunately, there are not many options for fighting this invasion besides removal and composting. C. fragile quickly returns to an area swept clean of the pest because it can reproduce from fragments left behind. Currently scientists are looking at biological control measures like fungi and parasites. Although C. fragile is eaten in some Far East households and it also is used in some animal fodder, neither use is common enough to provide an economic incentive for harvesting it. Some scientists believe that C. fragile can harbor toxic metabolites and should not be used for animal or human consumption. Around Nantucket we don’t have much in the way of toxic elements in our harbors, so I would say it is safe to use. C. fragile subsp. tomentosoides is a large branching green alga that can attain almost 1 m (3.0 feet) in length and weigh up to 3.5 kg (almost 8 pounds)! The alga branches dichotomously (in two parts) and individual branches are three to ten mm in diameter. The plant is anchored to the substrate by a spongy basal holdfast (its “anchor”). This species exhibits various

THE TRINITY COLLECTION

A 130-Year Vigil by Amy Jenness author of On This Day in Nantucket History, available at Mitchell’s Book Corner The US government installed new experimental technologies on the lightships Nantucket and Cape May in 1934. A new type of short-range radio beacon was installed on the Nantucket to enable the lightship to send two radio signals which gave passing ships the ability to calculate the time difference and find their position relative to the lightship. In 1917, the board had installed radio beacons on lightships as navigational signals. In the early days, a lightship sounded its foghorn and then also emitted a radio signal, providing two calculation points. But in time, engineers discovered emitting a series of radio signals was the most effective navigational tool for mariners. At the lightship Cape May, the board installed the first sodium vapor lights. The lights, which flashed and rotated, were installed 165 feet above the water and could be seen for nineteen miles. Lightships were floating lighthouses anchored near dangerous areas and used lights, and later sound, to alert nearby ships to their proximity of hazardous terrain. Each lightship had a crew of men stationed onboard continuously for months at a time. Originally launched and managed by the US Light House Service, operation of lightships was later taken over the US Coast Guard. For much of the 1700s, 1800s, and into the 1900s, most of the country’s goods were moved by ship. By the time the cape & island lightships were put in service, more than 250 ships a day passed through the area and there are many stories of tragic shipwrecks and loss of life. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries a series of seven lightships were stationed at points around Nantucket Bay. Those closest to the island were the Cross Rip lightship, which was originally called the Tuckernuck Shoal when it came online in 1828 and first located near the western side of the entrance to Nantucket harbor. In 1852 the lightship was moved to a location near the channel between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard and renamed the Cross Rip. The Cross Rip was in service until 1963. The Great Round lightship was positioned

As Columbus Day soon approaches, this is an opportune time for many of us to go off-island and experience a vacationof our own. Nantucket is host to the world-renowned Nantucket Wine Festival in May, when winery owners and vignerons from all over the world descend upon our tiny island. The fall is perfect for planning a trip to visit our wine festival friends in order to see how life operates for them during their busy season of crush and harvest. Here are some tips that will make your wine tasting travels a Grand Cru success. Have a designated driver. Whether you decide to do a self-guided day trip, hire a tour guide in a loaded van, or hop on the bus, make sure you know who is getting you to and from your winery destinations. To nominate yourself as designated driver and say you will spit doesn’t mean much after you have visited a handful of locations. Even if you are careful, you will most likely partake more than you think, especially when you aren’t used to drinking or tasting wine during the day. Your wine tasting excursion could end up costing you thousands of dollars, not to mention the inconveniences along the way, if you happen to be pulled over for driving under the influence. Decide who your fellow wine tasters will be. When deciding on the size of your group and your mode of transportation, keep in mind that some wineries do not allow limos or buses on property. Smaller, family owned wineries may not have the parking infrastructure for a larger then normal vehicle to park, much less space for a vehicle of that size to turn around in a tight space. Also, their tasting room may only be able to accommodate a limited number of guests at one time. continued on page 11

Successful Wine Trip from page 10

Leave your four-legged friends at home. Most wineries are not permitted to have dogs in their establishments or they may have their own winery dog as a mascot. It is not suggested to leave your dog in the car while on your wine tasting tour, as you never know how hot it will get in there. Your pet may be uncomfortable and you will spend the day worrying about your critter instead of enjoying the wine. A handful of wineries do not allow babies or small children, so it’s best to keep this an adult only adventure. Map your route. It is important to know where you are going, how to get there, and how long the journey will take. You may decide which wineries to visit based on what days and times they are open, whether or not you need to make an appointment, and what types of wines you want to sample. At many wineries in California, tasting rooms are open daily and especially frequented on the weekends. For a more intimate tasting experience, you may prefer to visit during the week instead. The number of wineries you visit may depend on the amount of time needed to travel to each winery along with the amount of time necessary at each stop for the tour and tasting. Don’t pack too much into your day: you want to have sufficient time to enjoy each visit without rushing or worrying about making the next appointment. Remember your manners. Tasting room etiquette may seem overwhelming and a bit square when you are trying to have fun, but a handful of simple Do’s and Don’ts are guaranteed to make the experience more enjoyable. Do not wear heavy perfume, cologne, hand lotion or shaving cream that can interfere with the smells of the wine. Leave the tasting area if you need to take an emergency phone call. It is perfectly acceptable to spit the wine, not because you don’t like it, but in order to moderate your tasting throughout the course of the day. There is no rule that says you have to consume everything that is poured for you. You can pour out the wine that was not consumed in the dump bucket as well. Whether you are the designated driver or not, you should never drink so much that you are drunk.

modes of reproduction, which is a common trait for many successful invaders. It can reproduce sexually, parthenogenetically (female based asexual reproduction), and vegetatively. Water currents can and will carry this species over long distances introducing it to new locations. Although C. fragile prefers warm water temperatures of approximately 24°C for optimal growth and reproductive success, it is tolerant of a variety of salinity and water temperature levels. It also thrives in sheltered habitats, such as harbors and marinas, which increases the possibility for human introduction on boat hulls. C. fragile can grow at greater depths than many other seaweeds and shading from phytoplankton blooms does not affect it as much as other plants. It can even grow under docks and piers. I just came back from a conference held on Hurricane Island on issues and research priorities for a group of Gulf of Maine field stations of which the Nantucket Field Station is the southernmost member. C. fragile first showed up in the Gulf of Maine in Booth Bay Harbor in 1964 due to transplantation of Long Island oysters. Research in the Gulf of Maine has found that it does best in warmer embayments, although it has become dominant in subtidal areas near shore. It can quickly become a dominant species in their normally very diverse subtidal and intertidal communities such as tidal pools. The rapid growth of this species and its ability to regenerate from broken fragments assist it in outcompeting native eelgrass and kelp beds, the primary shelter for many finfish and invertebrates. Dense, low-lying C. fragile subsp. tomentosoides meadows on the seafloor make movement difficult for lobsters, fish, and other organisms. Massachusetts eelgrass expert, Dr. Joe Costa, documented a huge C. fragile influx at Wareham, MA in 2005 in Buzzard’s Bay, and it is possible that the same thing is happening around Nantucket. Dr. Costa offers a very through update of the state of research into eelgrass habitat losses in the state and he explores the reasons behind these losses. As we know, “no eelgrass, no scallopsâ€? because bay scallops depend on eelgrass habitat during their juvenile stages. Area scientists have documented eelgrass destruction in Massachusetts embayments to be caused by coastal eutrophication via nitrogen loading from recent increases in development. When nitrogen makes its way continued on page 13

into our harbor from septic systems, fertilizers, and cranberry bogs, phytoplankton blooms can occur shading out the bottom-dwelling attached eelgrass plants. C. fragile does not seem to be affected by reductions in water quality. Other threats to eelgrass include ice damage, storm damage, and isolated outbreaks of the killer wasting disease that almost completely wiped out eelgrass in the 1930s. If any of these causes contribute to an eelgrass bed’s decimation, the eelgrass will usually come back. But if it is caused by nitrogen loading, until that excess nutrient is no longer feeding voracious phytoplankton, the eelgrass has very little chance to recover. In the mid-1990s, Charlie Costello with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection started documenting eelgrass habitat using a combination of aerial surveys and field-based ground-truthing from boats. He came back several times this summer to continue his research, and he is collaborating closely with the town of Nantucket Shellfish Biologist Tara Riley. Complications can arise when using aerial surveys to identify eelgrass beds because C. fragile patches can show up as eelgrass from the air. Additionally, if the surveys are done too early in the summer, the eelgrass may not have grown enough to be easily identified, and if the surveys are done later in the summer when the eelgrass meadows are lush and green, phytoplankton blooms in the water can diffract light and make it difficult to see the bottom. Ground-truthing from boats or by snorkel surveys is the best method to verify the aerial surveys, but that takes time and is expensive. We can also use acoustic methods to map out vegetation on the sea floor and, in some instances, quickly tell between eelgrass and C. fragile. Because of its bush-like growth pattern, C. fragile is considered a "lowlying alga.” Dense patches prevent larger species of fish and mammals from swimming freely through intertidal areas. The oyster thief is even more worrisome in oyster beds as C. fragile covers the oysters and smothers them, eventually destroying the beds! Indeed, the tendency of this species to overgrow and smother oyster beds is the reason fishermen call it “oyster thief.” This can be a real problem for oyster mariculturists and is no picnic for the poor smothered oysters either! One of the things I find most fascinating about C. fragile is that each “finger” section is a huge single cell; no true cell walls continued on page 15 exist, which allows it to have a turgid vacuole type

interior that can bounce incoming light from chloroplast to chloroplast, using light more efficiently and increasing in size with little energy output. In biological terms, the entire thallus (plant body) of C. fragile is composed of a single, multinucleate cell or "coenocyte," that has formed a tangle of branching filaments. The term "siphonous" describes this filamentous growth form. Now you can pass that SAT test! When “dead man’s fingers” wash up on the beach, they lose the chlorophyll-based green coloring and turn a ghostly white, bleached by the sun. C. fragile is a source of food for many invertebrate species, though not usually a primary food source. And it’s not all bad: in experiments done at the field station over the past few years, C. fragile was pulled directly from the harbor and centrifuged to see what types of epiphytic (surface dwelling) creatures live on a thin layer of water that clings to each “finger.” Hundreds of different diatoms, zooplankton, larval species of shellfish and sponges live on the surface, which looks knobby or hairy under a microscope. The rugged exterior creates a high surface area for these phytoplankton and zooplankton to attach to and gather food. In another set of experiments created by my interns, juvenile scallops were placed in tanks with eelgrass, C. fragile, or both, to see if the juvenile scallops would use the C. fragile plant body in the same way they use eelgrass (traveling upward to get higher in the water column and away from predators like crabs). In this experiment, the scallops often preferred the sides of the tanks over either plant (great guys, real helpful). Fortunately several other New England shellfish researchers have verified that scallops can indeed survive just as well on C. fragile. The jury is still out as to whether our eelgrass beds can hold their own and continue to provide a sustainable habitat for scallops. Some of the eelgrass loss last year was due to burial over the winter from the huge amounts of sand sloughed off of northerly facing banks in the harbor. We’re looking forward to seeing eelgrass coverage on Charlie Costello’s new Nantucket maps. Dr. Peter Boyce with MMA has also been documenting eelgrass coverage and the loss of eelgrass in the harbor. And maybe as Halloween approaches you’ll remember to look for and feel “Dead Man’s Fingers.”

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Game of your life from page 7 I don’t need to take it down nor do I need to write a new chapter. But the years have yellowed all of the losses and left me with long shadows falling over the far end of the field and the cool of the fall creeping up from the wet grass into my hands and shoes. The clouds feather above the pines as we trotted through our wind sprints. The past glows. So, when the air turns cool and brings out the sweaters, I fall back into the football past and reach out for the familiarity of old cleats and the promise of another crack at Melrose. On an island stuck in the tides of time, football has returned to the center of Autumn. Now that the team has won its first few games, the old Whalers feel the past reach for them. Gangs of middle school kids claim the top of the stands while the former cheerleaders take the lowest benches. At the fence along the field, former players and would be field generals wait to be summoned. At one end-zone, the smaller kids put on their own touch football game. At the other, the Labradors and German Shepards chase tennis balls. After each Whaler touchdown, a miniature howitzer announces the triumph to the moors and the ocean. Afterward, the mighty Whalers ride through town in a victory parade and the loser slinks off to the boat. The games build in size and intensity until the Vineyarders arrive at the end of November. At the same weekend as Harvard-Yale and Army-Navy, The Game brings thousands to the field, is announced over two radio stations, and replayed at the bars and job sites for years to come. The games push the summer away. The saws and nail guns fall silent on Saturday afternoon. All summer, we were spread out from job to job and boat to boat. But now, we come together. The winter population, in all its glory and shame, appears on Saturday afternoons and recognizes each other. We stood as we always stood, looked as we always looked, and said what we always said. “Nice to see you again.” “How do you suppose the team will do this year?” For the players, the dreams of professional football faded before the Vineyard floats got dismantled. A small handful went on to collegiate success and an even smaller number appeared on one or two highly paid Sundays.

N.F.L. glory faded as fast for the mighty Whalers as it did for almost every other high school player. But Vito’s teams built the island that we see around us. His players graduated and went to work with friends and fathers. They became plumbers, electricians, landscapers, and contractors. A linebacker met a running back at Fast Forward and they went to plumb the linebacker’s house. The quarterback called in a favor from the linemen, and they all put a roof on his grandmother’s house. The informal bonds of boyhood and huddles became the beams, struts, and supports of Tom Nevers and Quaise. The riches of the NFL never materialized, but they built the wealth of the island around them. The old Whalers know what they see when they go to the field on Saturday. The boys are manning their old positions, wearing their old numbers, and playing with a speed and quickness that left them many Budweisers ago. Those aren’t the only positions those boys will be taking. The old Whalers see the builders and planners and policemen and teachers and plumbers of the next twenty years strap on their helmets. My coaches were wrong; you play this game for the rest of your life. On Saturdays, we watch tomorrow take the field in blue and white. They smile, they shout, they leap and they grasp the voltage of their youth. Do they know? Are they disciplined? Are they strong? Are they fierce? Do they know what to do? The ball flies high and we have our answer.

Successful Wine Trip from page 11

Dress appropriately for whatever the weather may bring. Have a sweater on hand for the brisk cellar tour even when it is a scorcher outside. Wear comfortable shoes that are closed toed. No need to ruin your fancy heels or muddy your feet in flip-flops while walking through the vineyard! Be a good student. Pay attention, ask questions, create dialogue, record tasting notes, and take pictures. You’ll be amazed at how much you will learn by opening your ears and eyes to what is going on at the winery, versus just opening your mouth to sip. Have snacks along the way. You are bound to get hungry at some point during the day. And, it’s a great idea to have some nourishment to help soak up all the alcohol you may be consuming. Most wineries have a beautiful outdoor sitting area where you can enjoy a picnic lunch while sipping wine you have purchased from them. There are typically local restaurants or small markets that offer gourmet take out food that cater to those who are visiting the wine regions. Taking time for a bite to eat is a great time to regroup and discuss your favorite wines thus far and what you are anticipating at your next winery stop. Bring plenty of water with you for the duration of the trip and remember to drink it along the way. You will be glad you kept yourself hydrated at the end of a long day. One more tip for a wine-tasting trip overseas: In France, Italy and Spain, it is not so common for the winery to have an open cellar door policy, and they rarely receive visitors on the weekend. Because more of these wineries are small, family owned operations, you must make an appointment well in advance. You will most likely be meeting with the winemaker who lives on property and who is taking time out of his workday or family time in order to accommodate you. Therefore, be sure to honor your appointment by being prompt and not making any last minute changes or cancellations. By following these helpful hints and with a bit of pre-planning your trip, you will be better prepared to enjoy the wine tasting experience and have many memories to toast when you return home.

about 6 miles north of the tip of Great Point from 1890 to 1932. But the Nantucket lightship is among the most venerated of the many lightships stationed up and down the Atlantic and Pacific coasts because of its role in helping make transatlantic travel safe. Installed in 1854 40 miles SE of the island, no other lightship was farther from land. The vessel was anchored in an area known as Nantucket Shoals, where currents run in a clockwise circle. The Nantucket lightship and her crew were the first Americans seen by those travelling from Europe to New York City and the last seen by those leaving. Service onboard the Nantucket lightship was often monotonous and also very dangerous. In 1935, the British luxury ocean liner Olympic accidentally broadsided the Nantucket lightship and split it in half, sinking her and killing 11 crewmembers. The captain of the Olympic, a sister ship to the Titanic and Britannic, had been disoriented in a heavy fog and miscalculated his bearings. Britain paid for a new lightship to be built and installed on Nantucket Shoals. But Nantucket lightship crews are also credited with saving many lives. In 1901 the New York Herald arranged to install a Marconi radio on the Nantucket lightship and at a land-based office in ‘Sconset so it could report the shipping news faster. In short order radio operators and the US government realized Marconi wirelesses also made for safer voyages. On January 10, 1909 the SS Florida, carrying 850 displaced Italian immigrants, struck the ocean liner Republic in in a heavy fog 26 miles from the Nantucket lightship. The Republic had just installed a Marconi wireless radio and operator Jack Binns used it to contact the ‘Sconset station 47 miles away. It would be the first time the new radio technology was used to send a distress message and the Sconset and Nantucket lightship operators coordinated rescue efforts for the rest of the day. Nearly all hands were saved that day. Not all lightship business had to do with navigation and life-saving. They also became popular race markers during big yacht races. Yachting took ahold of American culture in the 1850s, and the custom of using lightships as race markers for both east coast and transatlantic races would last into the 1970s. When World War II prevented the popular Newport to Bermuda sailing race, its organizers planned a substitute race that sailed from Rhode Island to the Nantucket Lightship to the Cape May lightship and back. By the time the US Coast Guard took the Nantucket lightship out of service in 1983, a total of 11 lightships had been stationed on Nantucket Shoals, and all were named Nantucket. One of the last lightships to be taken out of service, the USCG replaced her with a buoy equipped with electronic equipment.

Vol. 45 No. 20 • Our 45th Season!

Sept. 17 - 30, 2015

Featured Restaurant: The Downyflake

Neighborhood Eatery Loved by All If you pull up to The Downyflake at 18 Sparks Avenue and there's no one sitting on the benches outside, you’ve timed your visit just right! This island landmark eatery is so popular that from the moment they open early in the morning until 2 pm closing time, The Downyflake is bustling. Weekend mornings the line sometimes spills out of the indoor waiting area, where hungry patrons give their names to Patty and then settle onto the benches out front for a short chat (the wait is rarely long). “The Flake” is an island favorite, and deservedly so: the food is hearty and house-made to order; the waitstaff is friendly, fast, and efficient; and the freshly squeezed OJ is the best! American classics are featured for breakfast (which is served all day), and, starting at 11 am, the lunch menu adds to the selection homemade soups, salads, hot and cold sandwiches, 10 different burgers, codfish cakes, fish & chips, luncheon entrees, and daily specials that often feature fresh seafood. And the prices are suprising—surprisingly low— breakfast for two for under $20 and a cheeseburger for less than $8 (and that’s with bacon) is unheard of on Nantucket! The Downyflake has been pleasing Nantucket residents and visitors since the 1930s, when the Reinemo family opened the island’s Downyflake Donut franchise downtown. In the late 1990s, Julie and Karsten Reinemo, Jr. sold the business to husband-and-wife team Mark Hogan and Susan Tate, and in the spring of 2014, The Downyflake was sold to Ron Oldham and Patty Kennedy, another island husband-and-wife team of restaurateurs. Oldham and Kennedy bring impressive credentials to the Downyflake that includes restaurants on the Delaware-Maryland shore, Key West (where Oldham opened the original Margaritaville for Jimmy Buffet), and Club Car, Westender, The Ropewalk, and Island Kitchen. Ron says that the opportunity to take over The Downyflake “fell into my lap... I had helped Patrick Ridge open Island Kitchen for the summer of 2013, and my wife and I were taking some time to relax in September... I ran into Karsten Reinemo...” Hearing that the Hogans were thinking of retiring, Ron and Patty spent some time on a business plan and then purchased the operation in the spring of 2014. Taking the transition “one step at a time,” Ron and Patty say they have

Chef/Owner Ron Olham with Norma (L) and Sue (R)

not changed much “we want to keep our loyal customers happy,” but they have made some small adjustments to improve operations. When we brought our Featured Restaurant Team in last week, we were impressed by how fresh and bright and clean the dining room looks, and we were happy to see that Nancy, Rosie, Sue, and Downyflake’s Famous Blueberry Pancakes Norma from AKs have joined Evie, who’s served us all at The Downyflake for more than 30 years. Breakfast here is served all day, which at The Downyflake means till 2 pm. On Sundays it's the only meal served, and the Sunday specials always include at least three versions of Eggs Benedict. We haven’t yet tried them all, but so far we love the Avocado, Bacon, & Tomato Benedict with a red chile hollandaise that adds more flavor than heat, and the Crabcake Benedict that is a delicious example of Ron’s skill with seafood. Ron and Patty have kept all the favorites: the Flake Special (two eggs, bacon or ham or sausage, homefries, and toast or donut or muffin), the Downy Breakfast Sandwich, and their light and tasty Blueberry Pancakes with plenty of wild blueberries and homemade blueberry syrup (we know a regular who claims to have happily eaten these pancakes once a week for 20 years!). The Morning Staples section of the menu still features Corned Beef Hash & Eggs, Steak & Eggs, and the Nantucket favorites of Ham & Beans with eggs, Linguica & Eggs, and Biscuits & Gravy, which is the one dish on the menu that is only served till 11 am. In additon, the extensive breakfast menu also includes 11 omelets, 4 scrambles, 4 styles of Denver Omelet

The Famous Downy Burger

French toast (including one made with cinnamon buns), a breakfast quesadilla, and 7 “lighter choices.” Any one of the Downyflake’s 3-egg omelets is a great choice for breakfast or for lunch. We recommend the Denver Omelet, a mile-high and fluffy, folded over sauteed ham, onion, bell peppers, and cheese. Another good way to start your day is with Ron’s Roasted Turkey Hash. The Downyflake Corned Beef Hash is a long-time favorite, but we prefer the turkey hash—it’s lighter and very flavorful, with chunks of turkey, potato, onion, and green peppers all deliciously browned on the griddle. You do have to time your visit right for this hash, though; it’s offered only on Sundays and again mid-week as a special. No matter which breakfast dish you order, be sure to accompany it with The Downyflake’s freshly squeezed orange juice. They make it fresh every day, year-round. But be warned: drink one glass of this liquid gold and you’ll never again be satisfied by juice from a jar. If you go to The Downyflake after 11, then you can mix breakfast treats with lunchtime favorites, which is just what we did. There are five lunch salads on the menu, and Ron always adds at least one more to the daily specials. At Patty’s urging (“he makes these as much for me as for the customers” she

told us), we tried his Chicken Waldorf Salad, a winning combination of crisp romaine, fresh tomatoes, and rings of red onion, drizzled with a lemon-herb vinaigrette and crowned with a generous scoop of waldorf chicken salad, complete with crisp apples and walnuts. Before our meal last week at The Downyflake, we thought the days of a burger for under 10 bucks on Nantucket were over. Just one of the ten burgers served at the Downyflake costs more than $10—that’s the Hamburger de Luxe with two hamburg patties, and it’s still just $10.95! We were impressed by their Famous Downy Burger, the Downyflake’s bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato. The burger is well seasoned and juicy, they’re generous with the bacon, and it has a perfect bun-to-burger ratio. We recommend you splurge for the fries: they arrive piping hot, fluffy inside and extra crispy outside. As much as we liked the burger, our favorite lunch sandwich is the Downy Cuban Panini. It’s made on split foccacia, smeared with dijonnaise, and it’s piled high with ham and smoked turkey, pickles, red onion, and tomato, and the swiss cheese melts luciously over it all. Then there are the sweet choices! It just wouldn’t be right to leave The Downyflake without ordering a doughnut. Made fresh throughout the day, the classic choices are: plain, sugar, cinnamon sugar, chocolate dipped, and two new varieties: coconut and maple-glazed (our new favorite). They have a changing assortment of muffins every day, moist Blueberry Crumbcake, and their Scotch Irish Cake is another favorite of ours and of most of the regulars. Another classic is the Downyflake Fried Dough, puffed and light with a dusting of sugar, and almost too good to share. We love everything Chicken Waldorf Salad about this friendly, affordable neighborhood eatery: the food, the portions, the people, and the prices. And as it says on the menu, remember... “As you ramble on thru Life Brother, Whatever be your Goal, Keep your Eye upon the Doughnut And not upon the Hole.” The Downyflake 18 Sparks Avenue • 508-228-4533 • www.thedownyflake.com Breakfast Monday-Saturday from 6am to 2pm Sunday Breakfast only from 6am to 1pm (off-season 7am to 1pm) Lunch Monday-Saturday from 11am to 2pm Breakfasts range from $5.95 to $9.95 • Lunches range from $5.50 to $9.50 Table seating, counter seating, and takeout Open almost year-round (closed for a few weeks deep winter) cash and local checks only, no credit cards (there is an ATM on site) handicap accessible • take-out available • kids’ menu To see full color photos of this meal: www.yesterdaysisland.com

One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.
