NANTUCKET VOICES
Falling in Love with the Island by Rebecca Nimerfroh Walking into the brightly lit sunshine of Kathryn Pochman’s office, on location at 110 Eel Point Road, the view from her picture window does not disappoint. Her second story office at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation offers an unspoiled view west toward marshland, North Head Long Pond, and a nesting Osprey Pole where a mother falcon is sitting on her eggs. It is was summer when I meet with Kathryn, whom everyone calls Kitty, Executive Director at the foundation, to speak with her about life on Nantucket and to laugh about the years gone by. “I moved to Nantucket in 1973 when I graduated college,” Kitty says. “I came out like so many people to work for the summer, and I was a waitress at Captain Tobey’s.” Just off Straight Wharf, Backyard BBQ now fills that now defunct watering hole. “One of my good friends from college and I came out here together and got jobs.” In fact, Kitty, who was raised in a small college town called Elizabethtown just outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had never even been to Nantucket before, or heard about it, until she was attending college and her then boyfriend had visited the island. “He sent me a postcard of the three bricks!” Kitty laughs. When Kitty and her college friend decided to go for the summer, the two girls came up in March before the summer season to secure jobs. Kitty recalls that several things were different back then, including the ferry which would depart from Woods Hole instead of Hyannis, and the ride was three-and-ahalf hours instead of two-and-a-quarter. “Some of the ferries had state continued on page 23

The weathermen declared Nantucket “the place to be” for the hurricane season, and the kite surfers nod vigorously out in the channel. Starring in their own YouTube videos, they rip across the water in the Tropical Storm force winds. A blue sail dips down and pulls one skipping and splashing across the channel and into Coatue, then the sail pops, rises, and then rips the other way, skittered over the white caps. It would be easy to sneer at the thousands of dollars in harnesses, sails, and boards as they shook in and out of the frame on YouTube. Chad would be holding the camera on himself as the sail jerks him to the breakwater and towards “People are Awesome.” Fifteen seconds of immortality will light up some dorm room in Iowa. Perhaps, if the gods of Wind and Publicity combine in a particular vortex, the local news will see the clip and splash him and his board across the nursing homes and dinner tables in the Suburban Boston Area. But it looks fun. The truth of the matter, nestled deep in the chest hair of my soul, is that I would wear the Puka necklace and the Go Pro headband to go skimming in the storm winds and hang out at the edge of control in between heaven and water. Age has taught me the value of a slower life without the pain of hard landings and broken ropes, but youth remains hopeful for one more wipeout. I had Ant business to take care of, while the Grasshoppers surfed the wind. There was lawn furniture to store, boats to pull from the harbor, windows to close and seal, and phone calls to make. The phone filled with messages of well-meaning people who had sent me checks that hadn’t bounced, wondering if I could take a look. The owners were sitting in living rooms and offices in Pennsylvania, watching the Weather Channel. Something was coming. Jim Cantore had that look and the live shots beside the debris at Lake Buena Vista didn’t bode

The Fury of the Storms by Amy Jenness In mid-September of 1961 Hurricane Esther gathered itself into a category three, and the category four, hurricane as it moved north-northwest from the Cape Verde Islands. The storm peaked with sustained winds of 145 mph, made landfall in North Carolina and continued north. Early on September 26 Esther struck Nantucket and Cape Cod. Although storm-related damage was considered minor, strong winds caused over 300,000 power outages in New York State and seven people died when a United States Navy airplane crashed north of Bermuda. Although Hurricane Esther was not considered a major storm on the Atlantic coast, its impact on Nantucket would last more than 20 years. Esther pushed 20 foot waves onshore in Madaket, which plowed through Broad Creek Crossing and cut Smith’s Point off from the rest of Nantucket. In the days following, islanders assumed the channel would close in and Smith’s Point would reconnect, but it did not. With a wide opening to the sea established, strong ocean currents continued to redefine Madaket’s shoreline throughout the fall. By November three homeowners had moved their cot-

miles northeast of Puerto Rico. Pilots dropped canisters of silver iodide into the eye of the storm and observed that the hurricane appeared to weaken by about ten percent. The impact was short-lived, however, and Esther began to gather strength again the next day. The pilots returned to seed again, but those canisters fell outside their target and had no effect. Despite the second failure, the US Navy called the experiment a success and established Project Stormfury, which the US Government operated from 1962 to 1983. photo courtesy of Nantucket Historical Association The project’s scientists speculated that the silver iodide would cause water 1944 hurricane damage to Macy Warehouse. contained within the storm clouds to freeze tages away from the eroding shoreline. Making The Most of an Important Toast
Page 11
by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Fall wedding season is upon us here on Nantucket and you have been asked to be the Best Man or Maid of Honor. With all the duties associated with the position, you are also responsible for offering a toast to the newlyweds. Not sure what to say or where to begin? Here are a few helpful hints to make sure you are memorable for the right reasons at your best friend’s wedding celebration. The purpose of a toast is to drink to the health or in honor of someone by raising your glass together with others. While you don’t want to overthink your 60 seconds of undivided attention at the microphone, you also don’t want to wing it either. A little bit of preparation can go a long way to make a positive, lasting impression on such a special occasion. First and foremost, you are paying tribute to your favorite couple. Not just the bride, not just the groom, but the two of them now joined as a pair. Set the scene for the audience on how the bride and groom first laid eyes upon each other just as you would see in an award-winning movie. Perhaps it was attending Murray Camp together with all their siblings in the summer of 2005, under the Grand Tasting tent at the Nantucket Wine Fest when wine was splashed all over her white pants, or at the dreaded cocktail party neither one of them wanted to attend at the yacht club. This can be followed by a light hearted story about the couples ensuing romance, including breakfast dates at Black Eyed Susan’s, meeting the parents for the first time for sunset cocktails at the Galley, or how he proposed on the open water while sailing on The Endeavor. Consider your toast not only as a gift to the honorees, but also as a thank you to your most gracious hosts. Be sure to honor those who helped to make this special day happen, including your favorite aunt who allowed you to have

the reception at her house in Sconset. A handful of audience tie-ins with your toast is a special way to make mention of other attendees in order to keep the audience engaged in what you have to say about the new Mr. & Mrs. While you continue to wax poetic about the newlyweds, there are a handful of taboo subjects that should most definitely be omitted from any toast. There is no room for reminders of past (read: failed or heart broken) relationships with other summer campers or short-lived romances with the bartender from Cisco Brewery, even if they got the couple to where they are today. Nor should you mention the wild, crazy shenanigans of light night swims at Steps Beach that either side of the lovely couple participated in during their single days. Stories that especially should be omitted include ones that would embarrass Grandma, like that time you got kicked out of the Club Car, or that really are best left unsaid. Highlighting their triumph as a newlywed couple is what is being acknowledged, not your most recent personal woes or successes. Stay focused on the new shiny pair and what they bring out the best in each other. Broadcasting the ultimate toast does take some practice, so be sure to set aside time for a dress rehearsal run-through to hone the perfect delivery. When you are handed the microphone baton, channel your inner Beyonce and speak clearly into the mic as if you were on stage at The Chicken Box. Keep in mind that your body language is also part of your presentation. Stand tall and proud, look out into the crowd and don’t be afraid to use a few hand gestures to get your story across. While it is acceptable to have note cards on hand, never ever read your toast from a script. You also may be tempted to have a glass of bubbly before your speech to calm your nerves, but it is a continued on page 21

Most Important Toast from page 11
much better idea to save it as a reward and consume it after your stellar performance. Speaking of your glass, don’t forget to bring one with you for the grand finale. It is important to remember to hold the glass by the stem, not the bowl, for numerous reasons. Your hand will most likely be hot and sweaty from the stage lights shining on you, along with the pressure to perform. Holding the bowl of the glass will leave unsightly fingerprints and will warm the contents in the drinking vessel as you pontificate about what an amazing team the newlyweds make. Besides, how will you be able to hold the mic, the glass of wine and your cue cards if you are desperately clinging on to your glass for dear life? Lastly, holding the glass by the stem (think of when someone is presented the rose on The Bachelor) will make it much easier to clink the bowls of the glasses together with others to create a harmonious ringing sound versus a dull, flat clunk and smashing your fingers in the process. After all the well-wishes, thanks and gratitude have been expressed and the wine consumed, the words that you choose to share during your epic toast (and how you share them) will continue to live long and prosper with each forthcoming anniversary.

All Artists Welcome at “Open Exhibition
The Restaurant at Miacomet Golf Club
Vol. 46 No. 18 • Our 46th Season!
The majority of Artist Association of Nantucket exhibitions feature work solely by AAN artist members, but every year they invite artists from across the island community to enter work in their annual “10 x 10 Open Exhibition.” Now in its twelfth year, the “10 x 10 Open” (formally called Collaboration) has become a popular and beloved AAN tradition. Island artists may submit up to six pieces of work for this community exhibit, with every piece in the show measuring 10 inches by 10 inches. The work is hung in a grid-like pattern on the walls throughout the two-story gallery. “It is such an intriguing exhibition and amazing to see the many different ways an artist approaches a 10 x 10 canvas, all the same size, and yet each piece has its own individual character,” said Peter J. Greenhalgh AAN gallery sales manager. “This is an often-askedfor exhibition and because of the vast number of works, the walls are literally covered in a mosaic pattern that is not often seen in galleries. It is clearly a favorite among our artists as well as our visitors, who come to the gallery to see the works done by their friends, neighbors, and community members.” Judy Greenberg Seinfeld will lead an informal discussion at the Spotlight Series Artist talk on Saturday, September 10 at 10 am in the gallery, 19 Washington Street. The 10 x 10 Open Exhibition will open with an evening reception on Friday, September 9, from 6 to 8 pm, and will be on display from September 9 to 26 at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street, in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District.

rooms,” Kitty recalls. “So that was very fun. They didn’t charge extra. It was first come, first serve, so you could go and sit in the stateroom, and it was a more elegant way of traveling.” Were there beds, I asked? “What I recall is they were a curved bench with a table in the middle. Just a little bit cushier than our current benches. They were private rooms.” Once on-island, Kitty discovered a Main Street on Nantucket that still had a hardware store and a Robinson’s 5 and 10. “It was still very much a tourist economy, but it was much quieter,” Kitty says. With the useful stores in town, Kitty says, “You could actually find a lot of things on island that you can’t find now.” During that March trip, her maiden voyage to this island, Kitty and her roommate knocked on doors, looking for jobs. One thing she does remember clearly is Portuguese bread and enjoying a delicious sandwich at Henry’s, which was on Main Street at that time. Returning for the summer, she and her roommate had secured jobs and a place to sleep. What is now Souza’s Seafood on Trotters Lane in mid-island was her tiny cottage that she shared with two other girls. “It was $1,700 for two months,” Kitty recalls, split three ways. “It was a lot of fun.” At the end of the summer, Kitty was at Preston’s Airport Lounge, a bar that at one point sat across from the airport, and a man asked her to dance. “I said noooo,” Kitty says. “And he said, ‘Oh, please?’ and I said ‘Ok, alright.’” The man was Thomas Pochman, and they were married seven months later, and have been together ever since. This was Labor Day Weekend, and Kitty recalls that the island changed fairly quickly in its transition into winter. “All the boats left Labor Day Weekend and then the scallop boats were in the marina. The island rolled up the sidewalks and shut down.” Falling in love rather quickly (“We knew,” Kitty tells me) they moved together back to Pennsylvania for a year, during which time they married, and then decided to return to Nantucket. Kitty recalls that she worked again as a waitress, but this time serving breakfast at the Indian Room in the Overlook Hotel, now the Veranda House. “I used to serve Fred Rogers, who was one of our famous visitors,” Kitty smiles. “He was very friendly and very sweet.” When I ask what he would order, she says, “Goodness, I don’t remember. Probably Blueberry Pancakes!” and she laughs. That first summer together with Tom, Kitty recalls the beauty of the island. When I ask her for her favorite memory of that time, she says, “Going to Coatue for the first time. It’s just so spectacular. Going clamming was one of our favorite things to do, and picking blueberries. And then we would have blueberry muffins and stuffed clams for dinner and you just felt like – wow – foraging your own food was really kind of fun.” Even more romantic, Kitty says, “We bought a canoe early on and we’d take it out on moonlit nights on the harbor, which was neat and really beautiful.” It’s clear
Kitty had fallen in love with not only Tom, but with the island, too. Although Kitty and her husband had each secured jobs in the summer, winter was another story, and with the island nearly completely shut down, they decided to leave and work for a private Country Club in Charleston, South Carolina that was only open in the winters. “We thought that was going to be for one year, and it ending up being for 12 years that we did that seasonal shift between Nantucket in the summers and Charleston in the winters.” During this time, Kitty and Tom welcomed two children, now adult boys, one born on Nantucket and one born in Charleston. “It was fabulous rais-
getting involved with Friends of Nantucket Public Schools.” And the school system itself is something Kitty thinks very highly of. “I think it was terrific. Very caring teachers willing to work with parents as much as possible on whatever their individual student needed.” But more so than just the school, Kitty talks glowingly of the community of Nantucket at large. “The close knit community is something I didn’t experience growing up, even though I grew up in a small town. There’s a sense of taking care of one another in this community that is something that is very powerful.” Now a year-rounder, Kitty led nature walks at The Maria Mitchell Association, and soon became their first Executive Director. After 17 years there, Kitty took a year off, and then joined the Linda Loring Nature Foundation in 2007. More than just a land sanctuary, LLNF is a research center and a place for people of the community to connect with nature. With 86 acres of land, a family-friendly walking trail provides access to rare sights including nesting birds, insects, harmless snakes, and beautiful Nantucket fauna. “The land was never developed in any way, so it is pristine,” Kitty says. When I ask Kitty is she ever finds it fascinating that she has spent more years on Nantucket than anywhere else, she says, “Sometimes I think it is unusual to think that I landed here from Amish Country. But it has become such a part of who I am and has shaped me quite a bit as an adult.” She continues by saying, “I don’t really think of the island being an island so much.” It is clear that Kitty has found a position that connects her to the island that she loves and the passion that she has for preserving it. “We are all interconnected,” Kitty says. “What we do impacts everything. That to me is a really important message, that people find a way to connect with nature, whether it’s a bird walk, a nature walk, a children’s program, or going out for a walk on your own, but find that connection. Because once you care about your earth, you are going to start taking actions to change your own bephoto by Cary Hazlegrove haviors.” At the end of our meeting, a big yellow ing kids here on Nantucket,” Kitty says. Limerick Challenge This series of four limericks first appeared in a June 14, 1924 edition of a Nantucket newspaper. It all began when the Princeton Tiger revived the then well-known limerick printed first below and the Chicago Tribune answered with the second limerick. The New York Exchange went one step further with the third rhyme, and the Pawtucket Times took over from there. Twenty-five ago, Yesterday’s Island began to encourage readers to continue the saga. Because of reader requests, we again issue the challenge to our readers to write their own ”chapters.“ (Only rhymes in the form of limericks will be accepted. Limericks should have five lines that follow the rhythm in the examples below.) Send the limericks to us at P.O. Box 626, Nantucket, MA 02554, or email them to us at yi@nantucket.net.

well for the house on Skyline. They were looking out their picture window at the dappled sunlight of a golfing afternoon in King of Prussia and imagining what would happen when the hammer comes down on God’s Little Anvil in the Sea. So they called. We know that there is little reason for worry. The only difference between a Tropical Storm and a nor’easter are ice, capital letters, and a Weather Channel Special Report. Moreover, we have seen the TV trucks and the headlines before as one or another storm raced by, spinning fish, and dropping off dazed birds. If you slow your voice down a bit, add a bit of condescension and a far off look, you can do the Old Salt Takes in the Horizon as well as anyone, even if you have never slept on an island. “Nothing is coming. Just looks good on the horizon. Couple of waves. Nothing like the Blizzard of ’78.” Again, the truth pokes through the lazy carapace of cynicism. We do live on God’s Little Anvil in the Sea. I am an old surfer on a slow moving, sandy board. When the owners wake in the middle of the night in Shaker Heights or in Wellesley, they don’t have the pounding of a brown sea rise from the horizon. They don’t hear the whine of the wind through the power lines or see the curls of cloud tumble overhead. They don’t have a rind of salt in every breath. A storm, to them, occurs on a TV set with narration, graphics, and advertising. Like everything else on a screen, it has an introduction, building action, climax, and denouement. Unlike the kite surfers, they don’t want to make the news; they would rather watch this story than be a part of it. We don’t watch or experience a storm out here; we witness it. Living on an island is to be surrounded by the eternal geometry of a straight line, and the incomprehensible darkness of the ocean. To live bounded by hills is to live in a library; with a good set of walking shoes and an ignorance of property laws, you can read everything you see. To live on an island is to live unbounded and illiterate. You can understand nothing, can travel nowhere, and can only witness the awful mundane thunder on the shore. It remains the place to be. Might as well surf it. My boon companion went out to Madaket to welcome the oncoming storm with all its unintelligible thunder. The wind blew from the north, off the tops of the houses and the cliff before skimming over the tops of the incoming rollers. They had yet to grow to an unmanageable height, although they did come in with a speed 4 registers for fast service, indoor and and energy born from the Caribbean and an adolesoutdoor seating, breakfasts, seafood, cence on the Jersey Shore. She has performed in regional theatre and Off-Broadway, credits include I Ought to Be in Pictures, Beau Jest, The Heidi Chronicles, and Down the Garden Paths, written by her late mother, Anne Meara. She also has starred on the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket stage in Born Yesterday and Fully Committed, among others. She is published in two books: No Kidding: Women Writers on Bypassing Parenthood (edited by Henriette Mantel) and Dirty Laundry: Real Life, Real Stories, Real Funny (edited by Maggie Rowe and Andersen Gabrych). When she isn’t making Jerry Stiller laugh in his living room on the Upper West Side, this is what she has been doing... The New York Post said of Stiller: She “ aims for something a bit deeper, more intense and realistic…Stiller convincingly becomes her characters, whether she’s portraying a shallow motivational speaker…a self-absorbed matron… or an anxious insecure Jane Fonda creating a video for actors on how to audition...” Tickets for this show are available from the Theatre Workshop Box Office at theatreworkshop.com or by calling 508.288.4305 (local) or 866.811.4111. the criteria needed to test their seeding hypothesis. But the seeding portion of the experiments ended due to political pressure from both the US Congress and other countries, including Cuban president Fidel Castro who accused the United States of attempting to turn storms into destructive weapons. For the next 12 years, Stormfury pilots flew into hurricanes and tropical storms to gather information. In the end, Project Stormfury’s largest contribution to meteorology was providing scientists with data that helped NOAA improve its ability to predict the course and intensity of future hurricanes. Despite Stormfury’s end, NOAA still maintains a Hurricane Research Division. The National Weather Bureau designates Atlantic hurricane season to last from June 1 to November 30. On Nantucket, the worst hurricanes to hit have occurred between late August and October.

Boats ashore after Hurricane Carol, 1954 In 1938, the New England Hurricane evolved from a category 3 into a category 5 storm before landing in New England. The Blue Hill Observatory registered a peak wind gust of 186 mph before its wind tracking instruments broke. The storm killed over 600 people and is considered to be the worst hurricane to strike New England in modern times. Hurricane Donna landed at Nantucket and the region one year before Esther in 1960. Donna recorded a peak wind gust of 110 mph at New Bedford Airport. The storm caused heavy tree, utility, and structural damage in southeastern Massachusetts, coastal New Hampshire, and Maine. Hurricane Bob approached the island in late August 1991. Bob was one of the smallest storms in area size, yet was one of the most intense to hit southern New England since 1938. Bob brought a tidal surge that was 10 feet above normal and several Cape Cod weather watchers reported unofficial gusts of 150 mph. Two months later, on October 30, the most destructive storm ever to hit Nantucket landed. It has no official name, but has been called the “No Name Storm” and “The Perfect Storm.” It began as a nor’easter and evolved into a hurricane. On Nantucket, high winds and seas battered the shoreline and caused up to $30 million in damage. Waterfront wharves and buildings were destroyed and boats sank or came to rest in yards and parking lots. The flooding went deeper into the island’s interior than anyone had ever seen. Storm waters split a portion Great Point off from the rest of the island and created an island of it for five months. At one point the gap between Great Point and Nantucket was a quarter mile wide and six feet deep. Shifting sands eventually filled it and reconnected it to the island.

cluding three NHA sites (Oldest House, Hadwen House, and Greater Light) and MMA’s Mitchell House. This exploratory walking tour weaves through the island’s architectural history with stops at historically important structures. The first stop will be the NHA’s Oldest House, built in 1686, representing the architecture of Nantucket’s first settlement. The tour will also include the MMA’s 1790 Mitchell House, a stunning example of Quaker architecture, and the NHA’s elegant 1845 Greek Revival Hadwen House, representing the most prosperous period in Nantucket’s past – the golden years of whaling. Another stop on the tour will be at the NHA’s Greater Light, originally built as a livestock barn in 1790 and remodeled into a summer home in 1929-1933, reflecting Nantucket’s art colony and resort era. Interested participants should meet at the Oldest House, 16 Sunset Hill at 10 A.M. The tour will last approximately two hours. Space is limited. On This Day in Nantucket History by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.

And so her young life, Vin did pluck it Straight out of that town and with luck it Would stop these advances On sweet little Nan since The family moved to Nantucket….

Featured Restaurant: American Seasons
A Delicious New Chapter for an Island Favorite In the quest for great dining, we’re always looking for that special combination of brilliant food, tasty cocktails and fine wines, warm and professional staff, and comfortable ambiance that allows you to relax and enjoy it all. Last week we found it at the new American Seasons. Chef Neil Ferguson purchased American Seasons in 2015, starting a new chapter in the long history of this Nantucket restaurant. Since it opened nearly 30 years ago, each chef who has taken the helm has continued the founding principle of celebrating regional American cuisine with local ingredients. Chef Ferguson came to Nantucket with more than 20 years of international experience, cooking at top Michelin restaurants in London, Paris, and New York, including a decade with Gordon Ramsey. He brings to American Seasons his impressive talent for combining diverse ingredients to create dishes that become far more than their parts. His respect for his ingredients is evident in the lack of heavy sauces or overwrought garnishing—every bite on every plate adds to the whole. At our dinner here last week, our first time back since the changeover, every detail was spot-on: food, service, and cocktails. From the warm welcome as we entered the arbor through the professional service during our meal to the sincere “thank you for coming” on our way out, we felt more like honored guests than customers. We began with a round of cocktails to toast the last Local Heirloom Tomatoes and Melons days of summer. Everyone has a favorite, but we’d encourage you to try one of their eight signature cocktails. The Seasonal Nectar is a refreshing blend of house-infused cucumber vodka, local honey, and fresh lemon. Our favorite is the slightly sweet and spicy Sunny’s Old Fashioned, expertly mixed by Starr and deliciously balanced, with mellow Basil Hayden, muddled orange, angosturas, and rich luxardo cherries. As we sipped our cocktails and perused the dinner menu, which had just been updated for the late summer harvest, we were offered freshly baked Bacon and Sage Rolls and slices of Baguette. Both were delicious—too good, really—take care not to fill up before the main event. On this late summer menu is an appetizer that captures summer on a plate in the form of Local Heirloom Tomatoes and Melons. This is a beautiful composition of red, yellow, and green tomatoes, red and yellow watermelon, and paper-thin slices of prosciutto with just enough fresh basil and fresh mint to add
accents of flavor without overpowering the sweet, fresh, juicy fruits. (Suggested Pairing: Edi Simcic Pinot Gris from Slovenia) Another cold appetizer as pretty as it is delicious is the Rabbit and Foie Gras Terrine, a plate of surprisingly compatible components vibrant with flavor. The terrine of tender meat and creamy indulgence is marbled with colors and textures that combine superbly with a mellow hazelnut pesto, dark and delicious wedges of spiced pickled plum, and cool, crisp hearts of lettuce anointed with a light vinaigrette and capers. Rich, smooth, meaty, Farfalle Pasta with Confit Chicken mellow, puckery, and crisp, this appetizer hits all the high notes! (Suggested Pairing: Chateau Simon Sauternes) With autumn fast approaching, we have a renewed appreciation of hot and heartier dishes. Chef Ferguson’s Farfalle Pasta with Confit Chicken is robust and full of rich flavor. Like everything served here, the pasta is housemade and delicious, its folds and cups capturing a sauce that is the essence of chicken, garlic, and parmesan. Ask for a spoon when you order this dish; you’ll need it to finish every drop of this and of the Roast Sea Scallops that was our table favorite. Surrounded by the famously delectable bay scallops whose season has not yet begun, Nantucketers sometimes distain to eat sea scallops, but Chef Ferguson demonstrates that in the hands of a master these larger cousins can be just as delicious. For this appetizer, a trio of scallops is presented on a vinaigrette antiboise whose light, bright flavors of tomato and bits of kalamata olive make a delicious backdrop for the sweet, succulent, golden crusted scallops. (Suggested Pairing for the Farfalle: Murrieta Albariño and for the Scallops: unoaked Beaujolais Blanc from Domaine Cheysson) With just seven entrees (plus Roast Sea Scallops evening special), Chef Ferguson man-

ages to please many palates, even his vegetarian (vegan) dish — Summer Squash Casserole with toasted bulgur, gem lettuce, and zucchini hummus — sounded tempting to our table of omnivores. The island’s fresh summer harvest of sweet corn is given rich fall flavors in Ferguson’s Roast Chicken Breast. The aroma of this entree turned heads as it was brought to our table. The moist chicken is topped with a sinfully crisp skin and drizzled with a rich jus reduction that flavors the bed of corn succotash, basil, and Grilled Pork Chop chanterelle mushrooms underneath. We are reluctant to call this dish “homey” because few home cooks could make it like this, but its aromas and flavors elicit fond memories of the best comfort food. (Suggested Pairing: Bouchaine Pinot Noir) Chanterelles are also featured on the Grilled Pork Chop entree which tied for table favorite. The thick chop is cooked through but succulent and admirably tender, with tasty bits of char along the edges. It’s topped with earthy chanterelles and cornichons and nestled against a salad of radishes, golden beets, and greens: flavors that accent the juicy, perfect chop. This is a supremely satisfying dish and one that makes us look forward to what other autumnal dishes could appear on future menus at American Seasons. (Suggested Pairing: Dumol Estate Pinot Noir) Chef Ferguson’s Halibut Filet is another showstopper. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked, this uncomplicated fish topped with tender artichoke hearts and served over fresh, tender-crisp yellow wax beans is transformed into something very special by a sweet, Halibut Filet richly savory, and simply superb onion-bacon jam. (Suggested Pairing: Thomas George Chardonnay) Sometimes it’s the simplest dishes that reveal the most about a chef. It was the humble Cod Filet that tied for table favorite among the entrees we enjoyed last week. Prepared skin-on and expertly cooked, the cod arrived easy to pull apart in large, moist flakes and topped with skin shatteringly crisp and deliciously seasoned. It’s the accompaniments that make this dish both surprising and possibly the best codfish entree we’ve ever tasted: roast lemon puree and fennel bulb. The magic happens when you partake of all three together: a large flake of cod, a bit of fennel, and a smear of the lemon puree. The dish plays tricks on your palate in a most pleasing way that is difficult to articulate, leaving us to simply say “Wow!” (Suggested Pairing: Sigl Gruner Veltliner)

Even if it means you have to skip the very good breads at the beginning of your meal, save room for dessert at American Seasons. Made in-house by Chef Ferguson, they are full of lavish flavor and as creative as the first two courses. We love the concept of an Ice Cream Sundae that changes nightly, and the s’more inspired version we had (chocolate ice cream, chocolate sorbet, toasted marshmallows, and graham cracker crumbs) was delicious. For a light and fruity finish, Cod Filet it’s the Vanilla Meringue with Vanilla Chantilly you want to order. Layered with these crunchy and cream vanilla treats is lemon curd, blueberry compote, and blackberries. We adored the Chocolate dessert: an assemblage of chocolate delights that include a chilled rectangle of luscious Chocolate Custard that melts into a pool of sensuous delight on your tongue, a warm Chocolate Bouchon that is moist and rich, dabs of dark chocolate sauce, chocolate crumbles, and a caramelized banana in case you need an intermission. The dessert that will bring us back to American Seasons is Chef Ferguson’s Strawberries and Warm Fennel Cake. The slice of fennel cake is moist, light, flavorful, and not overly sweet. It’s the Chocolate dessert “strawberry condiment” that adds sweetness to this unusual dessert. The restaurant was full and buzzing with happy chatter as we left. Walking through the patio dining area, we overheard a comment that also sums up our evening: “All I can tell you is I was only here once before, and it was so fabulous that I had to come back!”
