The Pacific Club by Amy Jenness

In the spring of 1772 successful Nantucket whaling merchant William Rotch began constructing a new, 3-story brick building at the bottom of Main Street which he used as offices and a warehouse for his growing business. Rotch’s structure survives today and is the only 18th century brick building still standing on Nantucket. For 140 years it was the center of Nantucket business, first for captains of William Rotch & Sons ships and later as home base for the island’s customs house, weather bureau, district court and the Pacific Club, which began as an exclusive gathering of Nantucket’s storied ship captains. Born in 1734, William Rotch was a Nantucket Quaker and made his fortune as a ship owner and spermaceti candle manufacturer at a time when Nantucket was the third largest port in New England behind Boston and Salem. Although he remained a pacifist, and pushed island leaders to keep Nantucket neutral during the American Revolution, Rotch and his ships were pulled into the conflict nonetheless. In 1773 two vessels Rotch had chartered to the East India Company— the Dartmouth and the Beaver— were raided during the Boston Tea Party while they were docked on Rowe’s Wharf. Later, Rotch’s ship Bedford was the first vessel to fly the American flag as it sailed up the Thames into London in 1783. But the American Revolution was a disaster for Rotch’s whaling business. Both Britain and America refused to let Nantucket ships trade goods and mistrusted the islanders’ neutral stand. In his memoir Rotch wrote, “From the year 1775 to the end of the war we were in continual embarrassments. Our vessels were captured by the English, and our small vessels and boats sent to the continent for provisions denied and sent back empty under pretense that we supplied the British, which was without the least foundation. Prohibitory laws were often made in consequence of these reports, unfounded as they were. By this inhuman conduct we were sometimes in danger of being starved.” In 1779, Rotch was part of a town-appointed committee that appealed directly to the British commanders and got them to agree to stop attacking Nantucket ships. But Nantucket citizen and patriot, Thomas Jenkins, charged the continued on page 11

By September, Monday leans back, gives himself a scratch, and looks around the backyard for a few minutes. It has all the time it needs. Nothing presses it. The phone doesn’t wring, the e-mail only contains spam, and the coffee is ready by the time the sun has passed above the pine boughs. Monday doesn’t believe in deadlines. Friday is a long way away and it isn’t in a hurry to get it here any sooner. September isn’t in any hurry to get moving either. In the last week, the summer remains in humidity and a rising swell out of the southwest. For the first time in months, the surfers get to ride shoulder-high swells. Everyone in the line-up knows each other’s names and coffee preferences. When they leave, the waves continue to build in their rear view mirrors. Tuesday settles in. The crowds of summer are clustered around a Starbuck’s in Hingham. Downtown, you can park next to the Bartlett’s truck and buy your tomatoes and corn with a conversation. The New York Times and Daily News remain well stocked in the Hub. Plenty of donuts are for sale at the Downyflake, plenty of croissants at the Bake Shop, plenty of everything. When the boats arrive, the day-trippers walk up Main Street. They are here for a look, for something to do before Gail picks them up for a tour. They pose by the fountain in the center of Main Street. They pick through the tshirts looking for gifts for the grandchildren. They buy some fudge. After the tour, they pick at cheeseburgers and French fries at the drug store until the boat comes back. For us, work remains to be done. Houses need to be cleaned and turned over. Students are coming to school in that great timeless pattern of the school week. They press up against each day, racing against the clock for game days, birthdays, and weekends. And then, faster than wished. Senior Year dawns and processes through its deliberate speed of one last time. This continued on page 21

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

EXPLORING NANTUCKET:

Wildlife Refuge by Sarah Morneau The Trustees of Reservations holds over 25,000 acres of land across Massachusetts that has scenic, historic, and ecological value for public use and enjoyment. Nantucket boasts an impressive amount of open space for its size, with over 45% of it preserved in its natural state. Of that, the Trustees maintain 1,117 acres of land on the island, and on their Natural History Tour I was able to explore a part of Nantucket that is hard to reach. The Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is a remote part of the island that can only be accessed by 4x4 oversand vehicle or by boat. We visit Coatue occasionally on our boat, but I hadn't driven the peninsula in almost 10 years, so I was very excited to revisit this quieter part of Nantucket. This is where you can really get away from it all and enjoy the quiet and beauty of nature. You can rent a Jeep or get an oversand vehicle permit for your 4x4 from the Wauwinet Gatehouse to head out to Coskata-Coatue and Great Point Lighthouse, but if you are inexperienced in off-road driving and don't know where you are going, it is easy to get stuck in the soft sand, requiring a tow truck to come and rescue you. I recommend sticking with an experienced tour guide, and the Trustees of Reservations will conveniently pick you up in town at 33 Washington Street or meet you out at the Wauwinet Gatehouse. I met tour guide Barry at the Washington Street location and settled into the van for a comfortable ride out to Wauwinet. It takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic to reach the gatehouse from town, and Barry gave us some Nantucket history on the trip out. He’s lived on Nantucket his entire life, and was a wealth of knowledge Once we hit the gatehouse, he hopped out to air down the tires so we could make the ride onto the sand. The 4x4 van has no trouble maneuvering through the soft sand, and we make our way from Wauwinet out onto the peninsula. On one side are the calm waters of Nantucket harbor and on the other, the crashing waves of the continued on page 22

“Our Nantucket” Features Mexico Mexican songs, dancing, and foods will be featured in the fourth installment of Our Nantucket, a community diversity series hosted by the Nantucket Historical Association in the Whaling Museum, this Sunday, September 18, from 4 to 6 pm. "Throughout its history, and into the present day, Nantucket has been home to an extraordinarily diverse mix of people from across the globe,” says Marjan Shirzad, Director of Visitor Experience. “We here at the Nantucket Historical Association are thrilled to celebrate this diversity with a new series allowing us to engage with friends, neighbors, and community members in fresh and exciting ways. Each evening of this series will feature tastes and sounds from faraway lands, and all of the events will share the common thread of getting to know each other and learning about different cultures in an inspiring atmosphere.” At Our Nantucket, a variety of performances and live events will be held, featuring teaching artist Veronica Robles. Robles and her young students (ages 7-15) will regale audiences with authentic Mexican dancing, including an Aztec presentation, a Mexican hat dance, and more. Veronica Robles is originally from Mexico and has resided in Boston since 2000. Recently she was appointed by Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh to serve on the cultural leadership board for the Boston Creates Cultural Initiative, as well as serving as co-chair for the East Boston Cultural Team. Each Our Nantucket program features a panel of guest speakers who bring awareness to their individual stories of immigration and relocation to Nantucket. Facilitated by the NHA, panelists share their memories of their home countries and their new experiences since moving to Nantucket. Throughout the evening, a sampling of Mexican foods will be served, including tacos, tamales, flautas, and tres leches cake.

Think Mad Men’s Donald Draper and Roger Sterling, hashing it out with loosened ties and wrinkled suits, bouncing ideas off each other in rapid-fire succession. But instead of advertising, their banter is rip-roaringly funny, and pertaining to a whole different ballgame, albeit not too different: American politics. This is just the scene of the no-holds-barred, hilariously funny play November, written by David Mamet and produced by the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. Set on the day of the famous Presidential turkey pardon, President Charles Smith is nearly at his breaking point. It’s re-election, and the numbers aren’t great. In fact, they’re downright awful, and the First Lady is already planning the library of their new home once they vacate the White House. Luckily the President has his right-hand man at his side, the cool and collected Archer Brown who serves as both a hilarious and deadpan sounding board for the President’s crazy ideas as he scrambles to win back the admiration of the American people and secure his future as the leader of the free world. Directed by Dan Foster, and led with strong performances by Paul Carlin as President and Fritz Michel as Archer, this play feels as though it could have been written this very morning, pertaining to so many current “hot topics,” leaving no stone unturned. Archer tells the President at one point, “We can’t build the fence to keep out the illegal immigrants” and the President asks, “Why not?” Archer replies, “You need illegal immigrants to build the fence.” Gay Marriage plays a huge role as well, when speech writer Clarice Bernstein (played excellently by Kate Splaine) is summoned to the Oval Office with the hefty task of coming up with words for the President to use to win again the votes of the people, but says she will only do so if he agrees to marry her and her lesbian partner. He says yes, all the while back-stepping after she shows up to his office the next day with her partner—both in wedding gowns. While this is happening, the President and Archer (desperate for funding) brainstorm a way to get cash, and decide it can easily be done by increasing the asking price of the Turkey Pardon, upsetting and unnerving the representative of the National Association of Turkey Products (played by A.T. Wilce) who is on site for the press-covered tradition. Everyone is in an uproar and the President gets backed into a corner of his own design, especially when he upsets Dwight Grackle, an angry Indian Chieftain, played by Adam Noonan. The laughs continue, more so after intermission when it seems as though anything goes, and it certainly does. “I always thought I’d do something memorable. I assumed it would be getting impeached!” the President exclaims. And as an audience member you can only watch and laugh, and wonder, or hope, that this is not what it’s really like inside that famous oval office. November is playing until September 24. For tickets, call 508-228-4305 or visit theatreworkshop.com.

committee with treason for going to a British port without permission. A joint committee of the Continental Congress House and Senate heard the complaint in 1780 and Rotch and his fellow committee members were not given full liberty until the war ended. Three years later, William Rotch and Samuel Starbuck traveled to Philadelphia, PA and submitted a petition to the U.S. Congress seeking permission for Nantucket whaleships to sail unmolested by American ships fighting for independence. Congress did not take up the petition until 1784 and by that time Nantucket’s economy had been hobbled by the war. In its report, the Congressional committee found “that the inhabitants of Nantucket have been and still continue in a very distressed state owing to the destruction of their whale fishery.” It recommended that Nantucket ships be “provided with a Certificate from the Selectmen of said Island that she is bona fide the property of the inhabitants of said Island and provided further that nothing be found on board her but the necessary whaling utensils provisions for the voyage and the product of the fish taken therein.” When the war ended Rotch transferred his whaling operations to France. In time Rotch’s son moved it to Wales. William Rotch returned to America in 1795 and settled in New Bedford where he continued to own whaleships until he died in 1828. The U.S. Customs Service, established by the First Congress in 1789, is the oldest federal agency. It assesses and collects duties and taxes on imported goods, controls carriers of imports and exports, and combats smuggling and revenue fraud. On Nantucket, the first customs office was opened in 1791. Most of the customs documents between 1791 and 1846, which include crew lists, bills of sale, coasting license bonds, and vessel registers have been lost either to fire or by deterioration. Nantucket’s customs office took up residence in Rotch’s warehouse. Even though the American Revolution and the War of 1812 devastated the island’s whaling industry, Nantucketers went back to see at the conclusion of each conflict. By 1830, Nantucket had 140 sailing craft doing business, which included 73 ships, 20 schooners, 46 sloops and a steamer. But the island’s prosperity at sea, hunting whales and seals and transporting goods all over the world, would not last. Fire wiped out much of the island’s downtown and wharves in 1846, shifting sands filled in the entrance to the harbor and made it impossible for large ships to enter, whaleship owners lost crewmembers and their ships to the California Gold Rush in 1849. By the time the 19th century ended Nantucket’s dominance as a New England port was merely history and, although the customs agent went to work each day, there was nothing for him to do. In 1913 Obed G. Smith had been the collector of customs for ten years and had collected a total of 48 cents. One of President William Howard Taft’s last acts was to reorganize the US Customs Service and under the new plan Nantucket lost its historic institution in March of 1913. Around that time the members of the Pacific Club purchased the building for $1,200. Founded by seven Nantucket whaling captains, the Pacific Club had used rooms on the first floor as a gathering spot for island mariners to meet, talk and play cribbage. By the time Nantucket’s last three surviving whaling captains died – Edward B Coffin (1911), William M Eldridge (1912) and Thaddeus DeFriez (1913) – the Pacific Club membership had opened up to include recreational mariners as well as commercial ones. In the ensuing years the club leased portions of the building to island businesses and nonprofits as well as to the district court. Today, the Pacific Club is home to a store and ATM on the ground floor. Amy Jenness is the author of On This Day In Nantucket History.

is your last “First Day.” This is your last September. This is your last season. Soon enough, the world will start lining up more “last moments” for the Seniors. Soon, they will take their last classes. They will have their last paychecks without bills and loans. They will have their last days as single people. Somewhere out there, the last moment of childhood comes on a Saturday with a ring in one hand and glass of champagne in the other. Flocks of weddings come to the island with the cooler winds and larger fish. September and October have replaced May and June as the wedded months. The big white dresses and the floral arrangements that once came with the first roses and the opening of the season, now come at the close of summer as the hydrangea are at their biggest and fluffiest. The couples have made a sound decision; by September, the water is warm, the crowds are sparse, and the fogs are brief. You and your dinner partner for the next fifty years can stand atop the sixteenth tee at Sankaty, pose for your picture, and have the sunset behind you. Weddings in the fall mean a summer of anxiety for the young couples. Like the school children, they hurry the days forward. They arrange the housing and the hosting, the menu and the music, and then they watch each invitation come back marked with that Saturday date on it. All of this expectation weighs on the unexpected. We will need a new celebrant now that my Uncle can’t come. We will need to fit four more people in for my father. We will need to hope the hurricane goes out to sea. They wish for the day to come before any more surprises get in the way, just as a running back darts for the endzone before anything or anyone can grab at his feet. Then, they are gone. The days, with gentle astronomical doom, ring in the rehearsal dinners, the wedding ceremonies, the receptions, and then ring out the ferries around Brant Point and into the long adulthood when “the last” and “never more” seem somewhere far over the horizon, beyond dinners, diapers, and diplomas. Perhaps the parents stay for another day or two. They have seen another “last time” pass before them and, at this stage in the proceedings, don’t need to hurry anything along. They have learned how to enjoy the Monday. You need to have some years on you to enjoy Monday. It has its promises. It promises four more days, just like this one, when nothing momentous threatens or looms. You don’t hope for a Monday, but, after a time, you grow to enjoy the monotonous hope that comes from the first day. Teenagers, fiancés, and Loverboy work for the weekend. But age teaches you painful lessons. You have no need to hurry the hours or the days before you. They will come when they will come and if they take their sweet time, that is for the best. Monday begins things. Monday establishes the routine. You go to the gym, you start your diet, you begin a new job on Mondays. Within the pattern, you find hope. Within the repetition, you find identity. Who am I. I am the person who goes to the gym. I am the person who goes to work. I am the person who goes to meeting. It began on a Monday. Saturdays are for champagne, but Mondays are for coffee. Weddings happen on Saturday; marriages begin on Monday. So it goes in September. The school year and the football season aren’t the only things that begin in this cool month. So does the winter. The quiet seaBar opens at 5pm sons, of wind and cloud and gray water begin now. Lunch Monday-Saturday 11:30am-2pm Old friends come out of the storm of summer and reDinner Nightly 5:30-close turn to the table for a cup. Life continues in its astronomical pace in the autumnal quiet of a 45 Sparks Avenue • 508-325-5700 September Monday. Breakfast open ocean. Once we hit the beach, Barry points out the different shore birds and we see seals bobbing in the water. We pass an ever-changing variety of scenery, from woodlands to wetlands, to ponds and ocean. On the day I went, a section of the beach was closed due to nesting birds, blocking access to the Great Point Lighthouse. Instead we headed into the inner trails of Coskata and had a more extensive tour of the coastal plants and animals that make this place so special. I had never seen baby seagulls until this tour, and they are fluffy cuties hiding in the underbrush compared to large and often bold shore birds they grow into. We could still see the lighthouse from a distance, but if going up close is important to you, make sure you call ahead to verify that the trail out is open. The tour including the trip to and from town is 3 hours and runs twice a day, seasonally from May to October. They also offer sunset tours during peak summer, as well as private tours. The van is equipped with maps and information on the refuge, as well as numerous pairs of binoculars for getting a closer look at the wildlife. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather, bring a bottle of water, and apply your sunscreen. No matter what season you go, the beauty of this untouched land is not to be missed. On This Day in Nantucket History by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.

Vol. 46 No. 19 • Our 46th Season!

September 15 - 21, 2016

Featured Restaurant:

Nantucket’s Best Bites Now that the summer crowds have thinned, it’s much easier to score a table at Nantucket restaurants. This time of year, we like to take a little time to recall our favorites from the 2016 season and revisit them before some close for the off-season. Here is a list of one dish we’d love to enjoy again from each restaurant we featured this summer. Some of these dishes that we enjoyed during July and August were seasonal and have been replaced by autumn fare; some that we tried last spring are back on menus for fall. We’re confident that even if you cannot try the dishes we list here, you’re sure to find another that will become your choice for Best Bite. When you do, send us a photo and description to yi@nantucket.net. The Proprietors bar & table 9 India Street • 508-228-7477 • proprietorsnantucket.com We’ve never had shortribs the way Chef Michael LaScola prepares them in his Shortrib Beef & Broccoli. Cooked sous vide and finished on the grill, the beef is served sliced and has the rich flavor of a ribeye and the supreme tenderness of a slowcooked shortrib. The brocShortrib Beef & Broccoli coli is as good as the beef, with umami flavor and a tinge of smoky char. Gingered turnip puree and a red-eye gravy make a delicious East-West finish, and the final touch is a cloud of flavor, otherwise known as deep fried beef tendon. Brant Point Grill at the White Elephant, 50 Easton Street BrantPointGrill.com • 508-325-1320 Steaks at Brant Point Grill are simply served and simply delicious. We were dazzled by the tenderness and rich flavor of the Prime Aged Rib Eye. The thick steak arrived at table with beautifully charred edges, its center warm and red—exactly medium-rare, as ordered. The rib eye rested upon a sweet, bright orange carrot puree and a pat of herb butter melted down to run into the jus. At 16 ounces, it was a bit large for us to finish at dinner, but it made lunch the next day very special. The Restaurant at Miacomet 12 West Miacomet Road • 508-325-0335 • MiacometGolf.com A new chef brought renewed vibrancy to the popular fare served in the Restaurant at Miacomet Golf this season. The Mussels were so good that we could have asked for a double order and been perfectly happy feasting only on this appetizer. Small but plump, the mussels are brought to table in a wide shallow bowl arranged like a flower blossom: each glossy shell wide

open to reveal a glistening orange morsel. And the deeply flavorful coconutharrissa broth with sparks of heat left us purring with delight! After we devoured the mussels and dipped and ate all the grilled bread, we were tempted to lift the bowl to our lips to drink the rest.

Mussels

The Ship’s Inn 13 Fair Street • 508-228-0040 • shipsinnnantucket.com Hearty, but lighter than steak (which is also excellent here) is Chef Mark Gottwald’s Veal Scallopini Citron. The veal, pounded thin, is fork-tender with deliciously crisp edges and is served in a deeply flavorful, rich sauce studded with capers and brightened with citrus. Think of veal piccata with rich veal stock added to the sauce. YUM! A tangle of homemade fettucine (spinach and egg) is served alongside with two quenelles—one of broccoli and one of carrot—that add bright color and intensely fresh flavor. American Seasons 80 Centre Street • 508-228-7111 • americanseasons.com Sometimes it’s the simplest dishes that reveal the most about a chef. It was the humble Cod Filet that tied for table favorite among Chef Neil Ferguson’s entrees on his late summer menu. Prepared skin-on and expertly cooked, the cod arrived easy to pull apart in large, moist flakes and topped with skin shatteringly crisp and deliciously seasoned. It’s the accompaniments that make this dish both surprising and possibly the best codfish entree we’ve ever tasted: roast lemon puree and fennel bulb. The magic happens when you partake of all three together: a large flake of cod, a bit of fennel, and a smear of the lemon puree. The dish plays tricks on your palate in a most pleasing way that is difficult to articulate, leaving us to simply say “Wow!”

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Dune 20 Broad Street • 508-228-5550 • DuneNantucket.com

Chef Michael Getter’s Spanish Shrimp, Littlenecks, and Mussels is a dish of warm, rich flavor. Slices of chorizo, peas, tender fregola, red pepper, join the shellfish and shrimp in the deeply flavorful and tomato broth with smoked paprika and saffron. This is not quite a stew, but much more than a mixed seafood dish. The clams (whole and out of their shells), the mussels (still tucked inside Spanish Shrimp, Littlenecks, and Mussels theirs), and the huge shrimp (heads-on) were each cooked just right, retaining their individual tastes and textures, but delicious when eaten with a bit of chorizo or smoky broth.

Fifty-Six Union 56 Union Street • 508-228-6135 • fiftysixunion.com Some like it hot, and if you’re one of them, you’ll love Chef Peter Jannelle’s Javanese Spicy Fried Rice. It may already be one of your favorites: the dish is legendary on Nantucket. It even comes with a warning: “this dish is level 8 on a 1 to 10 scale of heat...cannot be modified at all. For spicy lovers only.” Intriguing, eh? This fiery dish is also full of flavor. Shrimp, chicken, shiitake mushrooms, ginger, rice, carrot and other vegetables—all tinted red from the Javanese hot chili sauce—somehow retain their individual flavors. Although the heat is searing, we found it short-lived and addictive. Eat this dish with the chopsticks provided and you’ll take smaller bites between this and sips of your choice of cold brew. The Breeze Restaurant in the Nantucket Hotel, 77 Easton Street breezebarandcafe.com • 508-228-4730 Listed among the appetizers, but hearty enough for a light meal, the Cape Cod Mussels served at The Breeze are fresh and fruity, sweet and spicy—another of Chef Josh Schoen’s inspired variations. The mussels are bathed in a coconut chili broth that adds just enough heat to wake up your palate, but not so much as to mask the flavors of the mussels, pineapple, and star fruit. TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet 508-228-8768 • wauwinet.com The dishes that come out of Executive Chef Kyle Zachary’s kitchen emphasize the fresh seasonal harvest without relying on heavy sauces or overwrought presentations. In keeping with this chef’s devotion to fresh produce, it was his Cloumage Cheese Agnolotti that was our table favorite. Tender housemade beet pasta is filled with award-winning

Kitty’s 4 West Creek Road • 508-325-0781 • KittyMurtaghs.com The Lamb Curry is a new take on an old classic. We already know Kitty’s has mastered the classic Irish beef stew. This entrée, however, takes it to another level. The exotic symphony of South Asian flavors compliments the lamb beautifully. Served over mashed potato and suddenly it all makes sense; you’re right back home again. New world flavors with an old world feel. Atlas BBQ & Fish House 130 Pleasant Street • 508-825-5495 • atlasnantucket.com There’s no way we were going to skip Chef Brandt Gould’s House Smoked Baby Back Ribs at Atlas. The meat was fall off the bone and moist, smothered in house made barbecue sauce. The ribs came with a tangy sesame slaw, a cheese biscuit, and perfectly simple rice and beans, and we paired them with a Pirates Paradise that combines local Privateer rum with house-made pineapple shrub with fresh lime and bitters. It’s oaky, smoky, with a House Smoked Baby Back Ribs nice kick of subtly sweet pineapple. Rose & Crown 23 South Water Street • 508-228-2595 • theroseandcrown.com The Grilled Swordfish is marked on the menu as a “Rose & Crown Favorite,” and after tasting it, we know why! The fish is moist, meaty, oceanfresh, and cooked with a delicious smoky char. It’s served in a mix of sunny Mediterranean flavors: sun-dried tomatoes, onions, capers, and a very light garlicky lemon sauce. Tucked underneath the fish is a cool salad of edamame, grilled corn, and red onion that adds bright, fresh flavor to the dish. It’s a winner!

After tasting the Butternut Squash Ravioli once, we’d order it again in a heartbeat. The ravioli are filled with butternut squash, nutmeg, and parmesan for a deeply satisfying, sweet flavor that is sensational with the toasted pine nuts, baby spinach, and the bright acidity of the whole roasted tomatoes served on top. The ravioli is sauteed just before plating, which adds a slight golden crunch before the sauce is poured over. We can only hope this dish remains on the Fall Menu for 29 Fair.
