NANTUCKET VOICES
Plenty of Colorful Miles Left by Rebecca Nimerfroh “Stop,” Steve “Tuna” Tornovish says, looking at me with frustration. The silence weighs on us until he speaks again. “Look, we’re passed that. I’m not asking you if you broke into the cars. I know you broke into the cars. What I wanna know is why.” His face gets sensitive then. “Why did you do this? You were doing so well. You were making progress. You had a job. Did you need the money? Were you back on drugs? Just help me understand so we can work with this.” Luckily, this is all a game, and Steve has just let me in on a glimpse of the very exciting life he once led as a Nantucket Police Detective. But as it turns out, this was just one of the many lives that this island legend has lived to see and tell about, and over coffee at the Handlebar Café, I’m lucky to hear about them all. “That was something that I put a lot of effort into,” Steve says with a smile, discussing his interviewing skills. “I went to a lot of classes on that. I wanted to be the best. Because I knew there were some things I would never be the best at.” Steve says this because, at almost 40 years old, he joined the Nantucket Police Department as a “summer special,” a brand-new cop hired continued on page 21

AAN’s Wet Paint Extended to a Ten-Day Event
--The Artists Association of Nantucket annual Wet Paint Weekend has been expanded this year and coincides with the Nantucket Arts Festival. Wet Paint events get started with an opening reception for an Art Without Borders exhibition on Friday, September 30 from 6 to 8 pm in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington St. The show will be on display through October 17, Monday – Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, closed 2-2:30 pm. “The island has become such a well-known destination, hosting people from all over the globe. We thought it would be interesting to exhibit art that features some of our artists many travels. Now that the busy pace of summer is slowing a bit, we believe this exhibition will have the ability to transport you to another place and time,” said Robert Frazier, AAN curator of collections. “This is a new twist on an old theme, asking our artists to look in a new direction with their art, and include pieces from their various voyages and trips. We’re looking forward to their selections,” added Frazier. “Since Art Without Borders also marks the start of our annual Wet Paint events, the opening reception will be extra special,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “People should pop in to toast the start of Wet Paint and hear all about the many new elements to the annual event that are planned for 2016.” The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is painter Cate continued on page 23

Sept 22 - Oct 5, 2016
The Hope Chest by Robert P. Barsanti Nantucket scars us. We are stewards to an island in the sea of time. The cobblestones remain as they always have, as do the moors and the gray buildings. The years seem to slide by us. History happens on the other side ot the channel. Meanwhile, we replace the Easy Street bulkhead and repave the Boulevard. My mind has no calendar; on-island every day repeats the day before and, if I don’t look in the mirror, I remain the same guy who biked to work thirty years ago. Sometimes the world changes and we all notice, even on-island. Then add a few years and a few storms, and the changes that shook our world once become a part of the wallpaper of our lives. The United States elects an African-American as President and, for a few brief weeks, we stand around stunned that it actually happened and isn’t it amazing and wow, that’s something, before the bills come due again, the snow melts, and another July is upon us. We grow accustomed to the new world that has blossomed. When we stop and consider what our lives were like before, the change doesn’t seem all that momentous. Kids need to be fed, bills need to be paid, and the boat comes around the point; we digest the change, incorporate it, and get up in the morning. If you stop for a moment, and throw yourself back in time when our new history was an unimaginable future, you meet a stranger standing in your tennis shoes. In September, that stranger listens to the Red Sox games in stunned silence. Today, with a week left in the season, the announcers speak with the quiet confidence that the Red Sox will not only make the post-season, but will do quite well. They speak of pitching rotations and match-ups as if October baseball naturally included the Old Town Team. My young self, stranger to history, had been scarred by Bucky Dent and Yaz’s foul ball to Craig Nettles. Any triumphs the Red Sox would achieve only served to bring them and their fans lower in the end as the ball dribbled through the first baseman’s legs. I inherited my doubt of the Red Sox. Like hair, it came to me from my mother’s father. He listened to every game that he could not watch. In the

makeshift frugality that came from raising a family during the Depression, he rigged up an antennae/earphone system to a transistor radio that let him listen to the game while his wife watched her shows on the television. When the Red Sox were up, he sang the “Go-Go Red Sox” song, the only person I have ever heard sing it. He would listen until the Red Sox grounded into the final out before switching off the radio and going outside to weed the tomatoes. In 1975, I was ten years old and still believed in the possibility of October, my father picked up a set of World Series tickets from a client of his who worked for Magnavox and kept getting over-served at the Knights of Columbus. The seats were out in Section 3, in the far corner of right field. My sister went to Game 2 and got to watch Bill Lee pitch and the Red Sox win, but I went to Game 6 with my father and my grandfather. I kept score, watched Freddy Lynn, predicted Bernie Carbo’s homerun, saw Dwight Evans reach over the wall and retrieve the night, and then bore witness to Carlton Fisk. The night sang and hummed. We rode the Green Line car back to Lechmere, and I slept all the way home. Naturally, they lost on the next night when Bill Lee got cute against Tony Perez and Yaz flied out to center. My grandfather, like all Red Sox fans, saw the Game 6 win as the highest glory the Red Sox would be allowed. August hope only led to September heartache. The years bore that out and, following his lead, I continued to root for a team doomed to lose in the most heart-breaking way possible. We celebrated our curse as best we could, hoisting our “if”s and “but”s each fall. He’s gone now. His friends, his coworkers, and his workplaces are all gone. His tomato plants have been paved over, his house has been sold, and everything he ever touched has been rebuilt or replaced. Even the Red Sox have become champions three times. Time washes it all away. We have a few scraps left: a cribbage board, a picture of John and Jackie Kennedy, many fading moments. It’s a spectral Hope Chest. I would like to believe memories warp and age into values. Those moments I still hold of his, I sketch, then tattoo, onto my life. I want to be as hard working as a man who worked two full time jobs. I want to be as loving as the man who cooked dinner for his wife almost every day. I want to be as hopeful as the man who listened to his team until the last out. Time remakes us into strangers. We stand in a world as familiar as our own bedroom, and then we go from one bedroom to the next to the next until our we run out of bedrooms. Perhaps, one day, we could go back to a room that we were sure of; a place that we just walked out of for a moment. But that moment stretches out into a lifetime of backward glances and silent wishes. I am now as old as my father was when he took me to that Red Sox game. Looking into the past, I back into the present. And backing into the present, I fill my own Hope Chest. The world has changed. We have had Obama, the two towers, and David Ortiz. When I look around my life, I wonder what the kids will want with this and that. And then, I think about that moment years later, when all they have is what I left in the Hope Chest.

Maritime Fest Is Free & Full of Fun On Saturday, October 1, Egan Maritime Institute will host their annual Maritime Festival. All sorts of maritime-related activities will take place from 10 am to 4 pm at Children’s Beach and nearby Brant Point. Watch quarterboards being carved, scrimshanders demonstrating their art, get your face painted, enjoy local music, and more, all for free at this seventh annual celebration of island-life and activities on and by the sea. The only time you may open your wallet all day is if you get hungry and visit the festival’s food tent. Cyrus Pierce Middle School 8th graders will again race the boats they have made from cardboard, wood glue, and duct tape. See the chaotic fun from last year’s race at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4whfzUuWOJc Young festivalgoers can make sand art with Nantucket Community School/Early Children Education and crafts with the Nantucket Life-Saving & Shipwreck Museum. Artists from the Nantucket Artists Association will offer face-painting for the little ones. The Maria Mitchell Association will fill a touch tank with salt water and small marine friends like flat-clawed and long-clawed hermit crabs, whelks, soft and hard shell clams, green crabs, shrimp, periwinkles (snails), pipefish, killifish, and a few more that perhaps you’ve never seen before. (Don’t worry; after you meet them, Maria Mitchell’s aquarium staff will release them right back into the harbor where they belong!) Throughout the day, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum will demonstrate how to weave a lightship basket. Shearwater Excursions will offer three brief tours of the harbor aboard Shearwater. Tours are available to the first 23 people who sign up, so arrive at the festival as early as you can. Town of Nantucket Shellfish Propagation Lab at Brant Point will be open for tours at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm. Free transportation will be continued on page 26

Madaket Millie & the West End Command by Amy Jenness Mildred Carpenter Jewett, born on September 24 1907, spent her life in service to both people and animals in distress. She lived in Madaket from the age of 4, only left the island 10 times in her lifetime, and eventually earned the nickname “Madaket Millie.” There she fished, opened scallops, and helped the US Coast Guard. Famously gruff with many adults, Millie opened her heart to animals, children, and her Madaket neighbors. Her cottage, located in the marshes of Hither Creek, served as an ice cream parlor, sanctuary for wounded wildlife, a dog training center, and a US Coast Guard command post during different periods in her life. Born on the island, Jewett and her family moved to Madaket in 1911 where they lived on her grandmother's farm. Jewett was the daughter of a fisherman and scalloper who taught her the maritime skills that would serve her so well all her life. She learned to open scallops at age seven, assisted in rescuing crew from a shipwreck at age ten, and by the time she was eleven was acknowledged by the adults around her to be a superior mariner. She was fascinated by the ocean and would often sit on the roof of her grandmother’s home and gaze out to sea for hours. The family lived near the Madaket Life Saving Station and as a child Jewett was a frequent visitor

there. Before the Coast Guard, the US Life Saving Service operated manned life-saving stations all along the coast. Crews of “surf men” kept watch for ships in distress. When necessary, the surfmen assisted crews and passengers of ships in trouble and worked to safely bring them ashore. Nantucket had life-saving stations on the beaches of Coskata, Surfside, Madaket, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget. Eventually the US Life Saving Service and the US Revenue Cutter Service merged to become the US Coast Guard. The Madaket Life-Saving Station became a Coast Guard post until 1947, when it was consolidated with the Brant Point station because the Coast Guard believed new radio and radar technologies made more than one post unnecessary. As a young person, Jewett wanted to join the military but her poor eyesight prevented it. At age ten she, along with a group of westenders, rescued people from a ship that had run aground in Madaket. Jewett spent the rest of life assisting mariners caught short by Nantucket’s tricky waters. During World War II, Jewett was one of the Coast Guard’s 24,000 Coastal Defense Specialists, and she patrolled the island’s western shores

Autumn Cocktail Twists
Sept 22 - Oct 5, 2016
Page 19
by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits As we transition from summer into autumn here on Nantucket Island, it is important to take advantage of what Mother Nature still has to offer. Temperatures begin to decrease a few degrees at night, the sun begins to set a little earlier each evening, and the crowds have all dispersed (other than those who come to enjoy our Endless Summer weekends and the ensuing weddings wrapped around them). Now you have time to breath and enjoy a moment to yourself. This time of year also invites you to repurpose your favorite spirits and adapt them to new cocktail creations for the autumn season.
GEE-TEE-CEE The Spanish perfected the ultimate Gin and Tonic experience by serving it in a copa de balon (balloon shaped stemmed wine glass, like you would use to serve a fine Burgundy wine) filled entirely with ice so that your drink is cold, cold, cold! Place your garnish in the glass before pouring in your two essential ingredients. In this case, use a very aromatic cinnamon stick. Pour two parts gin over the garnish in order to aromatize your drink. Try Citadelle Gin from one of France’s oldest registered genievre distilleries. The rarity of this hand-crafted gin is that it is distilled in copper pot stills, similar to whiskey or brandy production. This makes sense considering it is made in the cognac distillery of its parent company (Pierre Ferand Cognac). Next add three parts tonic water. Keep in mind that if a large part of your drink is tonic, you should always use a freshly opened bottle of tonic. Fever Tree Tonic Water is a perfect choice as not only does it come in handy small bottle sizes for less waste, it is made with natural quinine with no artificial additives.
This recipe may seem a little stronger pour than usual. Keep in mind that the large amount of ice will slowly melt as not all sides of the cube are directly exposed to the liquid inside your glass. When your gin is diluted, it tends to actually taste more alcoholic in flavor than it really is. Hence, this drink will be less diluted from the melting ice than if you were to use just a handful of cubes to prepare your cocktail.
THYME

BREATHE
Sounds like September in a glass when you are able to finally catch a breath after all the summer hustle and bustle. Muddle a sprig of thyme from your favorite local farm in a pint glass. Avoid using dried herbs as they do not impart the same effects on the drink and could make your drink bitter. Add two parts Triple Eight Distillery Nor’Easter Bourbon, made locally here by our island Master Distillers. Gently stir in a spoonful of maple syrup (the real kind, not the synthetic stuff) followed by another spoonful of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Pour the ingredients into a fresh rocks glass that contains just one continued on page 20

large ice cube and garnish with a lemon peel. The smell and taste of this drink will transport you to think you are taking a discovery tour of New England’s picturesque covered bridges. Perfect as en evening nightcap while snuggled with your favorite blanket and while watching In the Heart of the Sea.
BALANCED APPLE While you can make this drink with an assortment of different apple varieties, the tartness of the juice from a Granny Smith Green Apple seems to work best in this cocktail. Fill a highball glass with ice. Squeeze a quarter wedge of lime in the bottom of the glass, the acidity helps to balance the other components of the drink. Add one part of vodka and one part fresh green apple juice. Top with ginger beer. A dusting of nutmeg on top will transform what may seem like a summer cooler into a delightful fall creation. Garnish with a few slices of green apple to add to your afternoon “snack.” Using quality products for this cocktail will result in a much better quality drink. Choose Keel Vodka as your spirit base; this premium light vodka is the ultimate in taste and smoothness with half the calories than in regular vodka. Fever Tree Ginger Beer is the choice for your mixer. Again, open a fresh bottle of this all-natural product packaged in a convenient small size bottle for less waste when creating your libations. Enjoy this drink when you need an afternoon refresher after a long run or bike ride on the ‘Sconset loop.

OTOÑO MARGARITA You didn’t think we would forget to add a drink made with Tequila, did you? This autumn inspired version of a classic drink will have you doing your Margarita Dance all the way to the cranberry bogs off Milestone Road and back. For starters, you will need to make a quick and easy Cranberry Puree. For this recipe, melt ½ c sugar in the juice of two large oranges using a medium sized pan over medium heat. Add one cup fresh cranberries and simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes or until the cranberries are soft. Set this aside to cool, then process in a small food processor and strain the concentrated liquid to use. Because of this key ingredient, it is helpful to make this into a batch drink that will easily store for several days in your fridge. To create the batch, mix three parts tequila, one part orange liqueur and two parts cranberry puree. When you are ready to serve it, pour the drink over crushed ice (not regular ice cubes) in a tall glass and garnish with an orange twist. Using Fortaleza Reposado Tequila, which has been aged 8 months in American Oak, will add an earthy, cinnamon component to the drink. Grand Marnier is a perfect accompaniment as an orange flavored brandy for the liqueur. And the cranberries should most definitely come from Nantucket! Put on your favorite wrap from Island Cashmere, relax as you read your newest novel from Mitchell’s Book Corner and sip on these tasty seasonal cocktails with a twist. You will fall in love with the sexy flavors of the season all over again.

to patrol the “strip,” the block from the Juice Bar to Easy Street. With comrades half his age and “smarter, faster and better looking,” Steve jokes, something about the job just clicked. “I loved it,” Steve says. “It just seemed like stupid things happened in front of me, and I just did a really good job.” So Steve went to Police Academy for six months, then returned to the island and worked as a police officer for 18 months until the detective job became available. “There was no change in pay, but it was daytime hours,” Steve says. “I was very fortunate to be selected for that. I’m very victim driven.” And it is clear that this statement continues to rings true, as thoughts of the people he’s helped along the years still have the power to bring him to tears. Told by a police academy instructor, ‘You are the best chance that victim has for justice,’ Steve says, “I never forgot that. Another instructor said, ‘You’re going to spend the worst 15 minutes of a person’s life with them.’ I didn’t get it at the time but I sure found out how sad and true that was.” Over the years, Steve’s seen it all, from bank robberies to murders (yes, even here on Nantucket). But after a recent health scare, Steve was unable to continue his position with the force. Newly retired, this aspiring songwriter is focusing on music, both solo and with The Offshore Blues Band, playing as often for charity as they are for themselves. “My philosophy is we do one night for ourselves, and one night for someone else,” Steve smiles. Having grown up on Hooper Farm Road, Steve says of Nantucket, “it was a fun place to be as a kid. We worked a lot. As soon as you could possibly work, you wanted to have a job. I worked delivering prescriptions from Nantucket Pharmacy for Walter Knott, one of the coolest guys ever, an old-time Nantucket Pharmacist.” As the son of Bill Tornovish Sr., and wife Sally, owners of Don Allen Ford, you would think Steve would have worked on cars. “I worked there when I was a kid but I was always a wise guy, so it was never easy for me to be around family,” he laughs. “I love being around people. I was always a people person and my jobs reflected it.” Another position included working at The Finast (the island’s grocery store before it became Stop & Shop) when the produce section was kept outside in the summer months. Living next door to his aunt and uncle meant plenty of cousins to play with, and Saturday mornings were often spent playing baseball or fishing on the shore of Miacomet pond. But perhaps the biggest impact of all on Steve’s childhood was belonging to The Nantucket Boys and Girls Club, run by a man at the time named Earl Girrior. He and his wife Ellie “raised most of the people you know on the island,” Steve says. “They cared about you. You had to stop and shake Earl’s hand. He taught you the value of everybody, and I don’t know if there’s a better lesson a kid can learn. I was very fortunate and had a good family, but some of the kids that didn’t have as much going on at home had a home at The Boys and Girls Club and had someone that would help them learn right from wrong. Earl made a difference in so many lives.” Sadly, Earl passed away in 2009, but throughout the years, and even after Earl and his wife moved off island to Cape Cod, Steve continued to visit them and stay in close contact. After attending Bentley College and working in Boston, Steve returned to the island and became a CPA. “I did that for a while, but my heart was not in it. I knew it was not where I was supposed to be so I was always looking for the next fun thing.” At the time, Steve was also getting a divorce. “We just became two different people,” Steve says of his first wife. “I’m happy to say that she is off and married and has a lovely daughter, and that’s cool because she’s not a bad lady.” But this is not to say that the split was not hard on him. Friend Kathy Lepore said to him, “You’ve been sitting at home, feeling sorry for yourself long enough. We’re going out tonight and you’re coming with us.” At dinner that night was Kathy’s sister Beth, in town for a half marathon. “She made me literally run after her,” Steve jokes. “While dating her I ran three marathons. After we got married? Zero!” Having been married for twenty years now, and the proud parents of two daughters, Steve has a lot to be grateful for, not the least of which being able to call this beautiful island he loves home. Steve says, “If I had 24 hours left, I think I’d grab my two dogs and go to Sanford Farm and do the long walk out there and back. There’s no place that’s more serene to me. A lot of times I’m playing my harmonica and working on a song.” Future plans for this selfdescribed “aspiring blues master” include learning how to play the guitar, and a visit to Nashville in the fall with his daughter. “I want to have some adventures still,” Steve says with a smile. “I think I have plenty of miles left.” And one can only wonder how colorful those miles will be.

Wet Paint activities continue during the week leading up to the Columbus Day weekend. Member artists will paint around the island, affording the public the opportunity to see them at their easels. Those works will then be auctioned off at the Nantucket Yacht Club, 1 South Beach Street on Sunday October 9. The preview is free and open to the public and begins at 3 pm followed by the art auction at 5 pm. A Tribute to “Mac”
Sept 22 - Oct 5, 2016
Page 25
The Nantucket Historical Association and The House that Mac Built will present four staged readings during the Nantucket Arts Festival to honor the life of Joseph ‘Mac’ Dixon, the co-founder and forty-year Artistic Director of The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. This tribute will include many of Mac’s former students and friends. Cultured, kind and, most of all, humble, despite an acting career which included the three most important works of The Federal Theatre Work Project, and several notable productions as a member of The American Laboratory Theatre on Broadway in the 1930s, Joseph “Mac” Dixon spent the better part of his life teaching and training young actors on Nantucket. He served as The Drama Director at Bennington College after WWII before moving to Nantucket in 1956, with his friend, patron, and summer resident, Jane Wallach. When Wallach introduced Dixon to a small, fledgling company of local community players, The TheJoseph ‘Mac’ Dixon, atre Workshop of Nantucket was the co-founder and Artistic Director born. of The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket for forty years. continued on page 33

available from Children’s Beach to Brant Point and back. At noon at the Children’s Beach bandstand, NHA Senior Interpreter Susan Berman will perform sea chanteys that have been passed down through generations of maritime families. Following Berman’s hour-long performance, NCMC’s Women’s Chorus will perform, and at 2 pm the NCMC Jazz Band will give a concert. Maritime Festival contests for adults include a four-way tug of war contest, harpoon throwing contest, and, at the end of the day (around 3pm), the favorite: an oyster shucking contest. Rick “Rocco” Sorocco is the one to beat again this year: he’s won the shucking contest for the past three years. Festivalgoers who stay for this contest get a special treat: they can help themselves to the freshly opened oysters. The Maritime Festival is weather sensitive; in case of inclement weather, the rain date is Sunday, October 2.

A Tribute to “Mac”
Vol. 46 No. 20 • Our 46th Season!
Sept 22 - Oct 5, 2016
from page 25
Mac served as TWN’s Artistic Director (and some would say spiritual guide) for more than four decades, directing some one hundred productions, and the theatre thrived under his gentle stewardship. Quiet, yet relentlessly persuasive in his way, Mac seemed to teach without teaching. Never unkind, he rarely raised his voice. Yet by opening night, his actors knew to enter with the upstage foot, the mechanics of building a long passage, and the physical and emotional impetus that drove the character to action. Courtly, funny, sophisticated, and physically graceful, he tread lightly through the lives of those he touched, yet many have said that no one influenced them more. Mac stressed the importance of being cultured, and he imparted the joy of the work and of life and that the two were inextricably tied. Many of his students will be onstage this week during the Nantucket Arts Festival in The House that Mac Built, a tribute to Joseph “Mac” Dixon and 60 years of community theatre on Nantucket. Two of the readings will be held Monday, October 3 at 7 pm, in Andrews Boathouse on North Wharf, Meredith Martin, Vince Veilleux and Caleb Kardell will read The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. And on Thursday, October 6 at 7 pm Our Town by Thornton Wilder will be read by Eric Schultz and local actors and friends. Tickets for these readings will be sold at the door. A Life in the Theatre by David Mamet will be read on Tuesday, October 4, at 7 pm in Greater Light, with John Knox Johnston and A.T. Wilce. Wednesday, October 5, also at Greater Light at 7 pm, Elizabeth Gilbert and Neville Richen will read Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Urhy Tickets for these readings can be purchased at nha.org.

Featured Restaurant: A.K. Diamond’s
The Rebirth of an Island Favorite Jeanne and Richard Diamond have been part of Nantucket's vibrant restaurant scene for decades, first working at and then operating and owning some of the island's favorite eateries: The Mad Hatter, Arno's, and finally purchasing the property they transformed into A.K. Diamond's. They completely refreshed their neighborhood watering hole just a few years ago. Then in February of 2014, on one especially cold night during that unusually frigid winter, pipes on an upper floor burst, sending water cascading throughout the restaurant, flooding the entire first floor. After 17 months of work, they reopened this July 4th weekend. Now that the season has faded from summer frenzy into autumn serenity, we finally made it back to AK's for dinner.
Super Food Salad The new decor is cool and casual. The bar is still front and center—it's a spacious wrap-around party, especially when there's a game on. Televisions are strategically placed so everyone seated at the bar and the surrounding tall tables has a good view. Before or after the big game, there's always friendly chatter. Renee and Dave are back behind the bar at AK's along with several other new and personable bartenders serving up a great selection of beers and a tempting selection of cocktails. If you don't want to be that close to the action, there is a dining area that is set off but not completely separate from the bar area and an outdoor patio. The new AKs is on a single floor, the old upstairs dining room converted into two apartments for employees. Chef Jeanne Diamond has designed a new streamlined menu with Chef Jermaine Scarlett, who cooked alongside her for several years. A number of patron favorites are still being offered and some delicious new plates introduced. They’re emphasizing fresh meats and produce, with everything made

on the premises—they’re even smoking their meats in-house. "We like knowing exactly what's in every dish," Scarlett explained. Wings, burgers, and finger foods are still served, along with salads, soups, sandwiches, and (starting at 5 pm), dinner entrees. Many of the new menu additions feature whole grains and healthier preparations. Food is well-prepared and served in generous portions. We left our dinner last week with enough to feed Fried Pork Belly all four of us another dinner. Quahog Nantucket Chowder is a fixture on the menu. It's a New England classic, freshly made, creamy and full of tender clams, potatoes, and celery with just the right amount of bacon. In addition, each evening there is a Chef's Specialty Soup, made fresh each day and simmered to potent, full bodied flavor. We sampled the Beef Vegetable Soup, a hearty broth chock full of beef, mushrooms, and vegetables as satisfying and comforting as a warm hug on a cool autumn evening. We could have paired this soup with one of AKs salads and been contented. Pub fare favorites still have a place on the menu at A.K. Diamond’s. Their Wings are as crisp and meaty and flavorful as we remember: Buffalo or J.T. Wings with blue cheese dip are offered with and a very tasty new version, Smokehouse Wings with jerk sauce. And their Burgers are as well done as ever, formed with a special grind of certified Angus beef and served on soft brioche rolls with a whisper of sweetness. You can build your own burger with half a dozen toppings in addition to the basic lettuce, tomato, and onion. Seven House Burgers are offered, including a Turkey Burger, a Black Bean Veggie Burger, and a Pulled Pork Burger. The Peppercorn Burger with its triple hit of pepper—freshly ground black pepper, jalapeno, and pepperjack cheese—comes highly recommended. Chef Scarlett describes it as “spicy but not out of control.” But if you have the appetite, go for the Big Boy. It's a full pound of ground beef in two thick and juicy patties layered with cheese and bacon. We also recommend the Short Rib Grilled Cheese from their “Hand Helds.” It’s a combination of two comfort food favorites: rich, savory shreds of short rib and melted fontina, with onion jam adding a touch of sweetness. Many of the sandwiches and burgers come with chips or fries. The fries here are superb and something we sorely missed during the closing—hot, salty, doubly crisp outside and fluffy inside—but the housemade Onion Rings

are our new favorites. Scarlett hand-dips thick slices of sweet onions in their own recipe beer batter, and fries them to order. The crunchy batter forms nooks and crannies that hold the ranch sauce served alongside. From the new items at AK’s, we adore their Fried Pork Belly, housesmoked and cut into bite-sized cubes of bacony richness lacquered with a soy-chili glaze that adds a whisper of heat. Dip down to the bottom of the bowl for more of the glaze. The Cajun BBQ Shrimp is deliciously different. Morsels of plump shrimp are served in a pool of peppery, buttery sauce. We would have liked some rice to mop up the luscious sauce, but then this appetizer would be an entree, so we settled for using the grilled garlic bread to soak up what we could. AK’s has a seven fresh salads that can begin your meal or be your meal: you can add chicken, salmon, steak, shrimp, or burger to any of the salads. We were very pleased they kept BBQ Smoked Pork Ribs their Apple Cranberry Salad on the new menu. This mix of romaine and arugula, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, crumbled gorgonzola, and fresh crisp apple tossed with maple-cider dressing hits all the right notes with its sweet-savory balance, soft-crunchy-crisp textures. But we may have found a new favorite with their Super Food Salad. We're not sure if the “super” is editorial or descriptive, but either way it fits! The first layer is a crisp mix of kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, red cabbage, and other greens tossed in a tasty mustard vinaigrette. Tender farro, cooked and chilled is spread across the top, finished with sweet roasted tomatoes. Cucumber wheels are set alongside, and a generous disc of goat cheese, breaded and fried to a tempting golden brown is the final touch. We barely made a dent in this enormous salad, and it was as good the second day as it was when served. AK’s Seafood Bowl was brought back by popular demand. A superb and fragrant showcase of sweet and savory, this entree is full of moist scallops, tender lobster meat, and plump shrimp, all folded into a Malibu Rum cream sauce with English peas, garlic, tomatoes, onion, and herbs. The sweet sauce highlights the seafood, without making it too sweet. A tangle of linguini is tucked underneath and toasted coconut is sprinkled overtop. Chicken Piccata was an evening special last week, and we'll take the opportunity to officially request this delightful well-balanced dish be added to the regular menu. Sauteed chicken tenders are folded into a creamy sauce with bright pops of flavor from lemon and capers and served over linguini. It’s hearty and very satisfying!

If you're hungry for barbecue, come to AK's and start with the Smokehouse Wings and continue with their BBQ Smoked Pork Ribs. The ribs are deliciously caramelized and crisp on the edges with the meat so tender that a gentle tug is all it takes to pull it off the bone. Our table favorite last week was the Pan-Seared Salmon. The cook on the fish was perfect: slightly browned and cooked through but a moist and flaky medium rare in the middle. An herb butter melts lusciously over the salmon, dripping onto the bed of creamed lentils underneath, and an assortment of pickled vegetables brightens the dish. Desserts at A.K. Diamond's are all made in-house. Their old-fashioned Apple Crumble is a taste of fall with its warm and cinnamon-scented apple filling and sweet topping, christened with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Creme Brulee is a classic well done, with brittle caramelized sugar topping covering a silky vanilla custard. Chocolate lovers hit the jackpot with two choices: a Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse with a base of chocolate krispies and a satiny ganache on top and a Molten Chocolate Cake that is simply delicious. Welcome back Jeanne, Richard, and Jermaine—you’ll be seeing a lot more of us soon!
