Maritime Fun for All
by Kara Falck - Education, Program, & Research Assistantat Egan Maritime Institute
This summer Egan Maritime Institute is offering free daily family programs at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum Monday through Friday outside on the Museum’s grounds from 10 am to 3 pm. In addition to tried-and-true favorites, like rope making and knot tying, they have added new and updated activities for different ages and learning styles. These activities include a focus on art and design, as well as opportunities to learn about traditional boat building.
But it doesn’t stop there: visitors to the museum can also participate in fun STEM activities related to maritime education, like a deep-sea sensory bin to find pieces of the wreck of the Andrea Doria and discover deep sea creatures and ocean pollutants. And you can discover how lighthouses are so bright and what it was like to be a lighthouse keeper?
On August 4, Egan Maritime is bringing back one of their most popular programs: Nanpuppets at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum. Join Lizza and her group of Nantucket puppets in a free performance outside in the natural beauty of the museum grounds at Folger’s Marsh.
Later this month, in collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association, Egan Maritime will offer a new program to bring the art of sea shanties to the Nantucket public through a series of four free community concerts. Concert locations will alternate between the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum and the NHA’s Old Mill property. Bring a picnic and meet up with your family and friends to hear some beautiful maritime music and learn about the history of sea shanties from 5:30 to 7 pm on August 17, 24, 31, and September 7.
To round off another great summer season, on Saturday, September 2, Egan Maritime will host its annual Maritime Day: a free family event at the Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum. This event will feature activity tables, free educational tours, crafts, and some special visitors. There will also be a life jacket fitting station run by the USCG Auxiliary Station where everyone can learn about safe boating and sailing tips.
The Nantucket Shipwreck and Life Saving Museum is located at 158 Poplis Road. Parking is limited, so it’s recommended that visitors ride bikes or take the NRTA Wave Sconset via Polpis Route, or catch the free Shipwreck Shuttle that departs on the halfhour from downtown at Visitor Services (25 Federal Street) starting at 10 am.
Egan Maritime is dedicated to educating people of all ages about Nantucket’s fascinating maritime history, using exciting and educational activities. For details, visit eganmaritime.org.

Threads of Life Quilt Exhibit at Greater Light
During Nantucket by Design, the Nantucket Historical Association’s premier summer fundraiser, the NHA in partnership with Christopher Farr Cloth is hosting a curated exhibition of quilts titled Threads of Life at Greater Light, an historic island site that is a gorgeous expression of art and design. Each quilt will be designed by a top design luminary from around the globe, including Kit Kemp, Martin Brudnizki, Yabu Pushelburg, Frank de Biasi, Mitch Owens, Kate Blee, Noz Nozawa, Atelier Ace, Mally Skok, Commune, Eleish van Breems, and Kathleen Hay. All quilts will be available for sale at the exhibition, with a generous portion of the net proceeds from sales benefiting the Nantucket Historical Association.
“We are thrilled to be hosting this exhibition at the NHA’s Historic Site, Greater Light, as it’s truly a unique property that celebrates art and creativity, making it the perfect location to showcase this exhibit and bring more awareness to the age-old craft of quilting,” says Christopher Farr Cloth Vice President Gary Searle.
Greater Light was the summer home and studio of Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two Quaker sisters from Philadelphia. Originally built around 1790 as a livestock barn, the Monaghans discovered Greater Light in 1929 when they followed a herd of cattle up Main Street. Enthralled, they purchased the dilapidated building and set about transforming it into their own summer oasis, adorning it with cast-off architectural elements, decorative objects, and eclectic furniture. Their personal aesthetic blended art and whimsy with an appreciation of unique handcrafted works that coalesced in an environment that is a monument to their spirit. They created a magical space that lovingly illustrates the era of Nantucket’s history when an art colony thrived in the sleepy island community.
Christopher Farr Cloth is a luxury fabric house based in the United Kingdom that was created by Michal Silver with partners Christopher Farr and Matthew Bourne. To create each quilt that on display in the Nantucket exhibition, Christopher Farr Cloth used its exclusive fabric collection and skilled seamstresses to construct one-of-a-kind pieces based on the luminaries’ designs that range from narrative to abstract, with the common thread of artistic excellence and quality.
“We are excited to have this collaboration take place during Nantucket by Design week, as it directly relates to the NHA’s extensive collection of textiles and quilts. We look forward to sharing more about these historic pieces in our collection during the various programming offered throughout the exhibition,” says Stacey Bewkes, 2023 Nantucket by Design Chair.
The exhibition free and open to public during Nantucket by Design through Friday, August 4, from 10 am to 5 pm and on Saturday, August 5, from 9 to 11 am. Special programming, including a tourwith quilt designers, a Nantucket by Design master class, panel discussions, and more, will be held at Greater Light during the exhibition for details: nha.org/join-give/benefit-events/nantucket-by-design
Two Play Dates
by Steve “Tuna” TornovishMy morning routine goes like this: Step one – make coffee. Step two – check email while drinking coffee. Step three usually involves looking at the world news and being disgusted. Let’s just ignore step three for now, shall we? Much too depressing.
I have several different email accounts. One collects all of the random necessities of life such as bank stuff and bills. That account is also the catchall for the endless advertising that is simply a part of our lives now. Delete, delete, save for later, delete. Ok, moving on to the next one. It’s the important account, the one that gathers communications from potential fishing customers. I am much more partial to this account.
On one particular morning not too long ago, the fishing account had an email that read as follows: “Hi - I would like to book a trip for my 18-year-old-son and his two friends who will be visiting. They are good kids (two are musicians!) and not spoiled teens (tho they are teens!) They have all just graduated from High School in Hong Kong (where we live during the non-school year). Any time during the week of July 23 would be great. Thanx!”
Now what’s not to like about this email? I replied at once and in a very short while a trip was scheduled for the three amigos. I was genuinely excited for this trip. Two musicians – we will have a lot to talk about. And Hong Kong. Wow! There’s a lot for this little island boy to ask about. And I loved that Kathie, the mother who set up the trip, described the three as not being spoiled teens. Everything about this was pointing to it being a great time.
And it certainly was. Right from the start, things were different than I had envisioned. I arrived at our meeting spot and was introduced to Kathie’s son Will and his friends Dimitri and Ella. I had assumed that I would be taking three young men out for this fishing adventure. Surprise! I asked Ella what her superpower was. Ella modestly replied that she didn’t think that she had a superpower. Will piped in “Yes you do! You’re fluent in Mandarin Chinese.” Yeah, that counts, Ella. Yikes: these kids are way, way smarter than me. I quickly reset my internal dials to simply trying to make it through the fishing trip without embarrassing myself too badly.

Tables and Totems
by Robert P. BarsantiI have been vexed by a closet. Inside, on the floor, drifts of clothes, papers, hats, swim suits, and about fifty shoes in one shape or another. On the walls, on various shelves, are vases, plates, platters, and card board boxes with specific tools that we no longer need. I am not sure if the automatic bubble machine is strictly necessary at this stage of my life
But those objects tax me, they vex me. All of these items have an emotional interest that has compounded year over year. Snow shoes that fit a ten-year-old may not be necessary on a twenty-one-year-old’s feet. Especially when you consider the low likelihood of snow out here in the best of modern winters.
Most of these objects have been marinated in history. To touch one of the totems is to be summoned into another time when snow boots were necessary and the air was filled with soap bubbles. To toss out the bubble machine, or to even send it to a new home at the Hospital Thrift Shop, is to somehow erase the Lawrence Welk birthday parties of the boys’ youth. Now stung, I put it back on a shelf.
Like many, I have been hurt by the slow erosion of time. Somehow, in the transition my father made from house to apartment to grave, almost all of the family Christmas ornaments were ground into dust. We were able to save his desiccated packets of Minestrone, the half eaten Toblerone chocolate bars, and the cut glass “hard” candies. But all of the ornaments that survived our tempestuous childhood have disappeared into the wind and tide. As I have gotten older and my memory has become overstuffed and indolent, I rely more and more on the totems for recall. Which is why I can’t seem to send out the small knit ski hats to the Take It Or Leave It.
Recently, I waited for a taco with a former student of mine from the days of Noriega, Oliver North, and Bel Biv Devoe. His life had not been easy; he had drifted away from Nantucket, found some rocks to cling to on the other side of the country and now was finally able to stand. In the meantime, his mother had been moved into the Island Home for her last stay. He returned for her and to finally empty out the storage shed. Cursed with an airline ticket, he had to abandon almost all of the totems of his childhood and only return with anything he could stuff in his pockets. Of all of the things he lamented sending to the Hospital Thrift Shop, a small, handmade, bed side table remained in the front closet of his mind.
During his high school years, when he bounced against the walls of math, history, and English classes, he found himself settled into wood shop. He was not alone. All sorts of students, most of them male, found their focus with a hammer in their hands and not a pencil. For all of these boys, the final project was a small 30” high table, with a drawer, and a 20”x20” top. The table required at least as much energy and focus as a performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream or the proofs of Ptolemy.
Like most engaging educational challenges, grades are secondary to time and frustration. If you did the math wrong on the splayed legs, they would wobble and collapse into a puddle of wasted time, energy, and sawdust. Each stage of completion required humility and collaboration. You had to get over your bad

Go Back to School in Robbies
by Eleni SinnisNative Shoes is an innovative and unique approach to footwear, and lucky for us the only one in the US is right here on Nantucket. Beth Thomas, the island store’s retail manager, says Native’s motto is “Live lightly: everything we do here is to create a comfortable versatile lightweight shoe that is better for the planet.” This is true in every aspect of the company the shoes are a lightweight material, and have a light environmental impact, and the sunny disposition of the workers at the Nantucket store is sure to lighten your day.
The brand was started in 2009, by Kyle Housman, and has been spreading its light-hearted positivity and kindness ever since. The Nantucket store is no different—Beth is always there to help customers find the best options. Housman visited the island every summer as a child and was entranced by its natural beauty, so much so that he decided to open his Vancover-based company’s first US store here. Nantucket was the perfect next step for Native Shoes, as Beth puts it “Nantucket fits beautifully into our mission. We truly are happiest by the water.”
Native is the perfect island shoe, and their comfort and durability make them ideal for children. Their simple, modern design is hand-washable and comes in a variety of colors and styles, including sandals and slip-on mules that are great for adults. They fit into the Nantucket community with ease. With a seemingly endless

& Ready to Party
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature FoundationIf you’ve ever seen the 1993 movie Tombstone, you’ve heard the iconic line, “I’m your huckleberry” that Doc Holiday says to Wyatt Earp. It’s a way of saying that he’s just the right person for the job. So, when it comes to eating wild huckleberries? Well, “I’m your…” you get the idea.
I am spoilt this time of year working in the field or out on the trails. Late July into August is when the berries are at their peak, and I can easily find a snack while out in the hot summer sun. The blueberries (both highbush and lowbush) are bountiful around the island, but are waning in their abundance as they are picked by people and eaten by wildlife. Their season is over. Anyway, I tend to favor their cousin, the delightful black huckleberry.
Black huckleberries deserve more recognition for being so amazing. However, it’s the earlier fruiting blueberries that capture all the attention. Maybe it’s because blueberries are something recognizable, something people see in the grocery store. Or maybe its popularity is because you can pick them by the pound. Either way, both are delicious, but I think huckleberries edge out blueberries in the flavor department.
Huckleberries and blueberries are all part of the Ericaceae plant family, the heather family. These ericaceous shrubs also include Azaleas, Bearberries, Blueberries, Cranberries, Heathers, and Rhododendrons. These plants love acidic soils typically having a pH between 4.5 and 6. It’s a wonder anything can grow in our nutrient poor, sandy, acidic conditions, and these heathland shrubs thrive here.
On Nantucket, our huckleberries are the species Gaylussacia baccata. But that’s the problem with common names. We often use the same name to mean different things. In North America, the name “huckleberry” has been applied to numerous plant variations, all bearing small berries with colors that may be red,

When Jane Austin Came to Town
Part 2: That’s Austin with an “i”
by James GriederAccording to off-island enthusiasts, visiting Nantucket was something like a trip to a living history museum. As with Rome, the ancient glory of Nantucket had faded, but its heritage remained. An article in Harper’s Magazine from that time drew a connection between Nantucket’s main product—whale oil for lighting—and the experience of the “good old days” that Nantucket now represented. Between the ages of “lusty barbarism” (lighted by tallow) on the one side and “overstrained and diseased civilization” (lighted by kerosene) on the other, stood Nantucket and the “golden age of reason”—lighted by whale oil. Nantucket’s predominantly Federalist-style homes embodied “all the Renaissance classicism of Andrea Palladio as reinterpreted by Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, and Robert Adam, and then stripped down to its bare essentials for trans-Atlantic shipment, whence it found its way to the houses of American rum merchants and whaling captains. It was the École des Beaux Arts simplified—the grand formal orders of antiquity that America had long consigned to a cobwebby corner of the national attic and forgotten. Above all, it was restrained and dignified, calming, orderly, and elegant, an architecture worthy of the forward-looking, rationalistic culture of the America of the late nineteenth century.”

Two Play Dates
Kathie told me that she hoped that the kids might bring some bluefish home if they caught any. Not wanting to mess up any dinner plans, I informed Kathie that the wind was now blowing about 30 out of the southeast and the waters where I had found fish on the morning trip might not be fishable. She wished us luck and we were off.
It was apparent that these recent high school graduates were tight in the way that lifelong friends are. There was a perfect balance between them. The three shared a tight bond, the kind that is forged by being there for each other through good times and bad. They were like siblings, minus the sibling rivalries. Will, Ella, and Dimitri genuinely enjoyed each other and it showed.
“Eighty-seven!” said Dimitri. I asked what that was all about. “Oh, we’ve been counting new Ford Broncos that we pass. We started on Monday. There’s a lot of them on Nantucket!” Will pointed to three more as we drove by Don Allen Ford. After a few minutes of debate it was determined that the Bronco inventory would not be counted. “Only Broncos in the wild!” Fair enough.
We got to the outside edge of Great Point and worked on casting technique. I parroted the lessons that Dan Kelliher had passed on to us when we were his fourth grade students at Academy Hill. My guests were quick studies, but each casting style revealed a peek at their personalities as they learned this new skill. Ella was practical and made adjustments as needed. She dialed in quickly. Dimitri, a future engineer, took his time between every cast and ticked off a mental checklist of required steps for optimal performance. Will demonstrated why he is a highly sought after lacrosse player, ferociously attacking each cast as if it was a shot on goal. All three were doing well in fairly short order. They had a monster wind helping and soon a little casting competition broke out between the friends. I must say that Ella held her own with the guys!
It was all fun and games, casting with the wind at our backs. The issue was that all of the fish were on the inside portion of Great Point. We took a drive to the south lot and then up to access #7 on Coatue, hoping against hope to find a fishable spot. Alas, it was not to be. I got out and tossed five quick casts. It was obvious that these conditions were not fit for beginners. We made the drive back to town, discussing
from page 5 continued on page 13
important subjects like the comedy of Bert Kreischer. A speaker phone call from Dale Gary had the three rolling in laughter. They described what the Covid lockdown was like for each of them. They filled me in on life in Hong Kong – “hot, humid jungle weather!” I learned a lot and was grateful for my time spent with the three friends. They gave me hope for the future. I dropped them off and wished them well.
I was overjoyed to receive a text from Kathie around noon on the next day: “Hi – any chance you have time to take our trio out again? They really had a great time!” Wait – what? The three amigos wanted another play date with Uncle Stevie? Absolutely! We made arrangements and once again there we were loaded up in my truck and heading out! “Ninety-three! Ninety-four, right over there!”
With all of the preliminary casting work already in the bank, we went right to the south lot on the inside of Great Point. The wind was strong but much diminished from the gale-like gusts only twenty-four hours earlier. Birds were diving and bluefish slicks were popping up. We put on some new metal HR StingSilver lures to help us cut through the gusts. In no time at all, Will’s line was tight and, in spite of his left-handed status, he landed a sweet little three pound bluefish. Dimitri got in on the act, breaking his personal lifetime streak of having never caught a fish. Ella, not to be denied, also hooked a bluefish. Three of these perfect grill sized fish were kept and all others were returned to swim away. The kids loved it when I deked out a hungry seal that was standing by trying to pick up an easy meal on a fish being released.
The ride home was full of the joy of a successful trip. I learned that Dimitri has been singing with a rock band since he was 12. He would soon be heading to the University of Edenborough to begin his engineering studies. Ella was off to Manchester in the UK where she had a couple of interests to pursue at university, including law enforcement. She’s sharp enough to do anything that she wants, no doubt! And Will begins a post graduate year in Canada this fall where he will once again star on the lacrosse pitch. He hopes to ultimately go to college at either Duke or Cornell.
I drove home smiling, knowing that no matter how bleak the world looks on a daily basis, there’s much hope to be had because of young men and women like Ella, Will, and Dimitri. I appreciated my good fortune to have been able to get to meet such great people. And the ultimate prize was seeing the three of them proudly feeding their crew with their catch of the day. I am blessed, indeed. And for those of you who were wondering – the Bronco count was at 101 by the end of the trip.

The student knew that they could walk into the homes of island-born carpenters and they would find an earlier version of that same table. Even now, one of these tables holds up Mom’s reading lamp, the dentist’s magazine collection, or a rusting toolbox in the basement. To enter the brotherhood of builders, to be welcomed by the accomplished and the artisanal, you needed to make this table.
Now my old student had to get rid of it. Someone who had not spent hours sanding it by hand would put a dying spider plant on it. Then, in a few years, it would be in the dump. Like dozens of others.
The exams don’t matter. Be they wooden or paper, they measure what has been done, not what will happen. To finish the table was to master yourself— that is what my student said. You had to sand it. You had to stain it. You had to make it so precise that it didn’t wobble. You had to be patient and persistent. In the years of drift, those lessons did not bear fruit. But when he found himself staggering upright on the rocks, the gifts of the table held him strong.
We don’t need the totems (or at least all of them). The good they did is embedded in our everyday practice. Both the bubble machine and the table live on, in the minds and the hands of those who used them.
All successful students make a table. They write a thesis, they sing in a concert, they complete a floor routine, they stand up and are counted. If we, the parents, the teachers, the community, are successful, they come to the workplace young, patient, and strong. Once they do, the artifact does not matter. It has become internal. We spend every day sanding and sweeping, one way or another.
Jane Austin Came to Town
from page 11
A prime example of this new kind of tourist was Jane Goodwin Austin, author of twenty-four books and numerous short stories. Austin's most popular works were her Pilgrim stories, based on family lore, archival research, and a creative imagination, and she had an enormous impact of the national myth of Thanksgiving that is generally embraced today. In January of 1882, she published Nantucket Scraps: Being the Experiences of an Off-islander, in Season and Out of Season, Among a Passing People, describing her first visit to the island, followed by her return during the off-season in an effort to learn more about the “real” Nantucket.
Writing in the third person as “Mysie,” she begins with an experience familiar to most island visitors: the boat ride here. Mysie, who with the “selfish acumen of an old traveller” had secured one of the best seats up on deck “before the crowd perceived there were more sitters than seats.” Departing from New Bedford, the boat was uncomfortably crowded until it stopped at Oak Bluffs, where the vast majority of the passengers disembarked to, as Mysie described it, “herd together in gregarious hilarity.”
As they chugged along Nantucket’s north shore, “the only visible impertinence offered by man to Nature was the creaking and hissing boat and its freight of peanut-eaters. In the lovely dusk of the summer evening, the shores of Nantucket defined themselves with a stillness and dignity most comforting after the clamor of Oak Bluffs. Mysie makes a study of the wharves of Nantucket, and contrasts the “new smug pier, still smelling of cement, and with offensively square and unworn piles, and smart black chains innocent of rust or barnacle” with the far more interesting “creaking old wooden wharf, gapped all around like an old man's teeth, and with half its boarding gone or loose, so that one feels, with a delicious thrill, that to stray down here on a dark night might end the genteel comedy of life with a bit of tragedy.”
Mysie cherished the cobbled streets of Nantucket, though “they are now somewhat uneven, and at occasional intervals are ground into powder by ages of use; although this peculiarity makes driving through the streets a somewhat heroic process, causing those still in possession of their own teeth to congratulate
continued on page 17
themselves upon the fact, no right-minded person would wish to see these alluvial cobbles give place to any modern innovation whatever.”
Staying at a boarding house on Pearl (now India) Street, she asked the family she was staying with what sights she should see during her stay on-island and was given a list that will be familiar to later visitors as well:
"What would you like to see first? There is the museum with the sperm whale's jaw, and the bric-abrac shops, and the wharves, and the bathing-houses, and the Unitarian bell out of a Portuguese convent, and the graveyards, and the mill….” The ‘Oldest House’ was one of their destinations, although at the time “it was but a ghost of a house, with great holes in the roof, chasms in the chimney, no glass in the boarded windows, and all one angle so eaten away by the tooth of Time and the east wind that one might put one's finger through what had once been solid oak, ..and grasp at the mouldered heart of the old home. Anything but nice...for it was very much decayed and out of shape; but...full of romantic and melancholy interest.”
Mysie seated herself on the “short worn turf, compacted by the pressure of the hundreds of feet...which in those two centuries had gone in and out over that sunken door-stone,” while her guide regaled her with garbled stories of the place—some still told today— “true perhaps, perhaps not—for yet another peculiarity of Nantucket is its utter apathy with regard to its own legends, and the impossibility of verifying them. One hears a vague and careless story from one person; and painfully seeking to amplify and establish it from other sources, is generally met with an indulgent smile, and ‘Well, I don't know, I'm sure. Maybe it is so,
but I don't seem to know. Perhaps Grandma So-andso would know.’”
Returning to her boarding house after the walk, Mysie engaged with her hosts in a longstanding Nantucket tradition of lamenting the current sad state of the island compared to the good old days when “every door stood open, or at most latched, with the string hanging out; and every man, woman, and child felt a friendly interest in every other, and nobody was homeless or friendless, whatever happened to his own house or his own family...” The elder local continued: “In the new order of things dawning upon the shores of Nantucket, the Cliff has been seized upon by ‘strangers,’ who are putting up the regulation seaside villa in great numbers; and, out of compliment to the æsthetic taste of the day, painting it deep red, sunflower yellow, postman's blue, or the deepest and muddiest chocolate to be bought for money.”
The Summer Boarder is “a new variety of the order Man,” according to Mysie, that evolved in the environment of a “crowded summer resort with such paucity of accommodation that it is only by bold and persistent warfare any one may acquire or keep a carriage, a dry bathing-house, a good seat at the table, unchipped cups, the attention of servants, or the earliest services of the laundress.” Upon arrival, they lay aside “all those restraints which under ordinary circumstances limit the exhibition of the natural instincts. The Summer Boarder neither feels nor feigns the slightest preference of his neighbor over himself; but calmly securing all that is desirable within his reach, casts a malevolent eye upon such matters as the neighboring Summer Boarder has secured for himself...

stream of outdoor activities to enjoy on the island, these are the perfect pair of shoes to wear on an island vacation. Native Shoes can be worn boating, fishing, heading to the beach, and to any kid's summer camp. Nantucket fit so well into the company that it created its own Nantucket Collection, decorated with sailboats and whales and only available here on Nantucket Island.
One of Native Shoes' latest initiatives is involving algal blooms, an environmental issue that directly affects the island. The company has launched “Rise by Bloom," an innovative footwear solution made with repurposed algae biomass, engineered to replace a percentage of plastic polymer typically used for making conventional EVA shoes. Algal blooms are a rising concern on Nantucket. Pollutants that are not absorbed or removed from waterways can create algal blooms. Nantucket’s beloved Miacomet Pond, once a special feature of the island with children always playing and swimming in its waters, now has a five-foot-deep muck. It is full of nitrogen and phosphorous that has been entering the pond causing algal blooms and invasive plants that damage the shoreline rendering the pond unswimmable in the summer. Brands like Native Shoes are taking steps to aid communities like Nantucket in their fight against this water population.
Their new design, The Robbie, is also in the Nantucket store and is perfect for back to school. The Robbie was inspired by what Native Shoes calls “generation do,” Native believes this generation is growing up as the most educated, connected, socially aware, and environmentally-minded generation in history. Native is working to promote education and climate awareness in today's kids. They truly believe in our younger generation and that environmental awareness at a young age can facilitate change. One way the company has done this is through their Remix Project, which recycles well-loved shoes to give them a new life in playgrounds. The project repurposes the bouncy, lightweight materials for which Native Shoes are known. They have already created six playgrounds in Vancouver through this initiative.

blue, or black. It is the common name for various Gaylussacia species, and some Vaccinium species, such as Vaccinium parvifolium, the red huckleberry native to western North America, and is also applied to other Vaccinium species which may also be called blueberries depending upon local custom, as in New England and parts of Appalachia. Mountain huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum) is native to the Pacific Northwest and is actually a blueberry, but equally delicious. The other Gaylussacia on Nantucket is blue dangleberry (Gaylussacia frondosa) which is a light blue berry found in moist forests such as Squam Swamp and Windswept.
Our black huckleberries look basically like black blueberries. Though actually purple, they are so dark they look black among the green leaves. The plants themselves have thin, woody stems and are about thigh-high and grow along paths and heathlands across Nantucket. The leaves are a lighter green than the darker blueberries and other similar species, though that isn’t a real identifier. My favorite part of identification is the underside of the leaf. If you think you have a huckleberry plant, pick a leaf and turn it over. Move it from side to side in the sunshine. If it sparkles, it’s your huckleberry. If you have taken a walk with me on our trails at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, you may have heard me call it the disco plant. The small resin dots on the underside of the leaf sparkle as if it was covered in glitter and ready to party. Plus, saying silly things like that help people remember the resin on huckleberry leaves.
Black huckleberry is one of, if not the, most abundant shrub on the island. As a clonal plant, it spreads across the moors both by seed (which the birds poop out and disperse) and by runners. Though more successfully through runners as seed germination is low. Runners are trailing stems which produce roots expanding the reach of the shrub.
Back to how delicious they are. There is something about picking a berry when it’s still warm from the sun that makes it extra sweet. It’s like tasting summer. I sometimes call huckleberry the “muffin plant” because, unlike its cousin the blueberry, it is difficult to pick enough for a pie (5 cups are needed according to an expert source). Picking a cup is easier and enough for a batch of muffins or pancakes (or a snack). There are some tiny seeds within huckleberries, but they
add a small crunch to the fruit that is added benefit. Research on wild huckleberries has found them to be rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, and potassium – as if I needed another excuse to eat my fill.
The only problem with black huckleberry is having to compete with the native wildlife. Deer, birds, small mammals, and insects all feed on our native huckleberry. Of course, there are more than enough huckleberry plants around Nantucket that we can all have a bit.
When foraging, please remember to be respectful of private property. Foraging helps bring us closer to the land, but there is also a general rule to follow: take only what you need, leaving enough for the wildlife and for regrowth (no more than 5 percent of one species in a given spot is a good rule of thumb).
So, we can enjoy the best time of year – huckleberry season. Come fall, however, we will again appreciate our native Gaylussacia baccata. Black huckleberry is one of the few Nantucket plants that actually has fall color. The light green leaves turn crimson in fall blanketing the moors and heathlands with bright red. Another reason to look forward to the changing season.

“Those who wish to dissect and classify the Summer Boarder will find an excellent field of observation and some splendidly developed specimens at Nantucket during the season; that is, during July, August, and part of September. The growth is abundant, the characteristics strongly marked, the conditions unusually favorable; for not more than half the persons thronging the island during the last two years could be comfortably accommodated, and there are few places where good humor, courtesy, and a contented spirit, or their reverse, find more opportunity to flourish.”
“Nantucket is quite right and perfectly honest, for each purchaser has eyes, hands, and should have judgment of his own. If he has not, Nantucket has studied the art of sheep-shearing for many years, and does it very skilfully and pleasantly. But Nantucket, like many other gentle and silent entities, is very shrewd; and although confessing freely that the Summer Boarder is profitable, she perceives and is keenly annoyed by such of his faults as touch herself, as for instance, his conviction that money buys everything, even the Dauphin, and heirloom silver; his intrusiveness, his noisiness and late hours, his general air of taking possession in the name of ‘big I’ of what may or may not belong of right to ‘little u;’ his ignorance of the island code of manners and speech, of the respective claims of island families and names, of traditions, of genealogy, of maritime matters, and of a thousand other things.”
“Already the old things have passed away from this once peculiar place, and the older people find no consolation in the renewal of material prosperity brought by the summer visitor to Nantucket.”
The next day, all of the traditional points of local interest having been visited, Mysie was convinced to take a trip on the island’s latest mode of transport, the Nantucket Railroad: “Yes, let us go to South Shore—to Surf Side, I mean,” said her guide, “the engine is named Dionis after the first Tristram Coffin's wife, and when it whistles they say Dionis is shrieking at the invasion of Coofs.” Not everyone was in favor of the newfangled device. “Improvements are not always betterments,” said one of the senior folk in attendance, “in my day, the girls and I

walked all the way to South Shore instead of down to the depot. Three miles out and three back, and then we were ready to dance all night, and go fishing next morning.”
Undeterred, Mysie and her companions set out for the station, where Dionis sat steaming on the rails. With a shriek of its whistle, the train slowly pulled away from the town depot, “past the crumbling, empty wharves, the deserted candleworks, the closed warehouses, once filled with oil and candles, or provisions for whaling vessels, that now look like the closed mausoleums of dead and buried prosperity.” Dionis made her leisurely trips back and forth every hour—“except of course when the train operators are getting their dinner, for on Nantucket the idea of one man being served at the expense of another man's comfort or convenience has not yet superseded that notion of individual dignity and the individual's right to himself and his time which is the quintessence of republicanism.
“So, on a glorious summer afternoon, Dionis, with a shriek of derisive laughter, deposited some fifty persons among the lumber of the incipient Station, Rink, and Refreshment House, and immediately backed herself to Nantucket, having no facilities for turning round, leaving the Squantum to its fate.” There wasn’t much in the way of shelter at Surfside for the visitors, simply “a tent with tables and benches, instead of the primitive arrangement of seats upon the sand, shingles for plates, and fingers for forks, incident to the good old times.”
The next day, Mysie departed for an extended stay in ‘Sconset, which at the time was considerably more remote from town than it is today. Earlier in the nineteenth century, ‘Sconset was the setting of a localized mini-tourism boom where well-to-do ship-owners, merchants and captains, along with their wives and children and perhaps a servant or two sought relief in the summer from the then-bustling cobbled streets of Nantucket Town. But new accomodations were required— “The little mob of cottages setting to each other upon the brow of the cliff offered no fitting accommodation for these magnates, even had there been enough in number, and they proceeded to erect a sort of marine villa as different from the impertinences of today as they were from the huts of the whale observers, being plain, comfortable houses, painted with many coats of white or Quaker-brown paint, with green blinds, a piazza in front, and a ‘walk’ on top, and a little stable to shelter an excellent horse, absolutely necessary for a family living seven miles from its home or any sort of market.”

from page 23
With the collapse of the whaling industry, the magnates departed, and a second wave of local tourists with houses in town built more modest dwellings between the ‘marine villas’ and the old fishing shacks. “But now, since 1880, another change has come upon ‘Sconset; now the hardy fisherman upon the cliff finds that he can make more money by renting his cottage to the summer boarder, and himself going ‘down town’ for change of air, than by living quietly at home.
“Like the rest of the island, or even more than other localities, this hamlet is fast hastening to destruction, that paradoxical destruction born of prosperity. It was built, or rather a few fishing-houses for occasional use were built, in 1676, and for two hundred years it bore a character all its own, as distinctly flavored, and to the appreciative palate as piquant and delicious, as that one squantum clam. But, alas! the world has found it out, has laid its degrading and commonplace grasp upon it; and the beginning of the end already stares one in the face...”
It was on the trip to ‘Sconset that Mysie “first saw the Nantucket moors.” A brief stop to pick wildflowers ended with “an unconsidered scream from her friend’s lips, who pointed at Mysie's skirts and gasped, ‘Ticks!’ Undoubtedly that impromptu embroidery, looking as if it were done in brown beads, but with the novel feature in embroidery of a constantly changing pattern, was ticks. When they returned to their lodging the tick check, still familiar to visitors and locals today, began: ‘I counted mine as I drowned them,’ said one, ‘and there were a hundred and thirteen.’ ‘I measured mine instead of counting,’ replied Mysie, not to be outdone. ‘How much do you fancy a wash basin holds? Mine is full.’ ”
Wandering around the village of ‘Sconset, Mysie came upon an ancient man, sitting on a bench on the bluff and looking through a spy-glass. Assuming he was a retired captain, she said, “I suppose you are quite in the habit of coming out here to look for wrecks, are you not?” The old man snorted his response, “I’ve only been here once in my life, and I hope it’ll be the last, for a nastier hole I never did see.” His home was in South Boston by way of Ireland, and that’s where he’d rather have been: “an elegant view of the harbor and forty-eight ferry-boats a day and a street-band three times a week in the Square,” and all other needed con-
veniences close at hand; “what made me girls think of coming to this heathen old place, beats me.”
The Boston visitor may have been disappointed but Mysie was charmed, and resolved to return in the off-season to discover the ‘real’ Nantucket. The real Nantucket would reveal itself only after the crowds had faded away; locals made themselves scarce when tourists thronged the streets and lanes of the island.
Making arrangements for the late fall excursion, Mysie soon encountered the first difference from the “in season”—finding somewhere to stay. “The very Nantucketers who had most patiently entertained the Summer Boarder during his appointed period were most resolute in having nothing to do with him when that period was over.”
The steamship ride to Nantucket was very different from Mysie’s last trip— in addition to the long, rolling journey across the Sound in foul weather, the boat was virtually empty except for “laborers of one sort and another, simply using this boat as a means of transit to and from their labors...And yet the discomfort and solitude filled her with exulting visions of a Nantucket purified from Summer Boarder and no longer impregnable.”
When Mysie arrived at the wharf in Nantucket, “the wharves had an oddly deserted look, and the dark waters leaped higher about them, preparing for the winter storms, in which they often rise and take back the territory man has stolen from them.” Nevertheless, she “found it all that she had hoped, more than she had expected. The streets were empty and quiet, the few pedestrians briskly going about their business; nobody lounging, nobody looking in at shop-windows, nobody staring vacantly about in search of some indefinite wonder. Several of the shops were closed...this class of merchants take their own holiday during the offseason, either going on ‘the continent’ to visit their friends, or retiring into private life and resting in change of work.”
The railroad engine Dionis was “laid up for the winter, her dismal shriek giving place to the wintry wind howling across the moors in prophecy of a storm. ‘How do you get to Surf Side without the railroad?’ inquired she of an ancient and fish-like wanderer around the deserted station. ‘Same way as we did afore we ever see a railroad,’ replied he, with a friendly grin: ‘foot it, or hire a team, or get a lift in somebody else's.’ An off-season stay in ‘Sconset—if one could even get there— was out of the question, for “while in summer two large hotels and nearly all the continued on page 29

Jane Austin Came to Town
from page 25
cottages of the hamlet are offered to the public not only willingly but eagerly, in the winter it is all but impossible for an unfortunate coof to find shelter or welcome. The hotels are closed, the families who took boarders have either gone ‘to town’ for their own recreation, or are resting from their labors and annoyances, and loathe the face of a summer visitor.”
Remaining in town, “a few more quiet days were spent in paying parting visits to certain persons and places of whom and of which Mysie had grown fond. One of these was the Athenæum, one of the principal buildings in Nantucket, and one of the most interesting. Here is the hall where ‘Patience’ is played, and where the peripatetic lecturer delivers one of his two discourses for the current season; here also the more stately dancing parties are held, and any other solemn assembly for which people are ready to pay a serious entrance fee...The librarian is a lady whose courteous and charming manner and ready interest in her visitors adds an attraction to this pleasant retreat, too often lacking in more pretentious institutions...The hall is a very pleasant reading-room, where one may see the latest magazines and take what book one likes from the shelves, or consult dictionaries and encyclopædias without formality.”
Mysie signed the guest book—or rather, the “Book of Strangers” back then— when she visited in August 1877, using her real name, Jane Goodwin Austin, one of hundreds of visitors over the years who have left a note of their passing in multiple volumes stored safely in the vault at the Atheneum. Goodwin’s historical novels, written later in her career, were published as the Pilgrims were increasingly gaining fame—Standish of Standish, for example, was published in 1889, just after the famed National Monument to the Forefathers was completed. A copy of Nantucket Scraps, Austin’s travelogue of her visit to Nantucket, is available for reading in the Atheneum’s Great Hall collection. That venerable institution, the Nantucket Atheneum, continues to welcome residents and visitors alike, serving as an oasis of calm in the orderly chaos of a typical Nantucket summer day; the source of a wide variety of programs intended to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of its patrons; and a public space for the community where all are welcome.

BEACH SAFETY
•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.
•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
