When Mr. Albert Shows Up

How old am I? Man, I’m so old that I’ve attended about a dozen Jimmy Buffett concerts. Brother Jimmy has a particular appeal to those of us who spend a lot of time on islands. He gets us. A great example of Mr. Buffett’s understanding of island life is his song “Coconut Telegraph,” a song that accurately describes the speed at which news spreads around an island community. Yes indeed, island gossip is faster than, well, a false albacore. And there’s not much out there that’s faster than Mr. Albert.

I played a crucial role in spreading some island gossip recently. It started with a picture of the awesome Lynne Burchell Heyer. Lynne, one of Nantucket’s undisputed top anglers, was holding a monster false albacore that she caught on her boat while fishing the west side of the island. For bonus points, Lynne caught it on her birthday. So happy belated birthday to you, Lynnie B! Now let’s talk about that fish, shall we?

“I was fishing near Jeffrey (Jeff is Lynne’s husband and the two of them are a couple of Nantucket’s best charter captains). He yelled that he thought he saw some green flashes. I casted and hooked up on this fish, and then they were just gone!”

That’s part of the appeal of the false albacore. They’re always cruising at ludicrous speed, regardless whether they are in open water or running the edge of the beach. That speed comes into play when you hook up to one as well—every Nantucket fisher knows the sweet sound of a hooked albie ripping line off of a spinning reel (Note to self: what a cool ringtone that would be. Hmmmm…).

They’re stronger and more aggressive than bones (bonito), although maybe not as erratic.” Lynne reports that the pod of albies that she and Jeff ran across were feeding on

Art can be inspiring; it can have great emotional power; and it is a way to capture memories and re-live past joy. For many who treasure their time spent on Nantucket, art is a way of taking our island home with them when they leave.

A work of art can mean even more when the artist personalizes his or her piece beyond a signature. During the early 1990s, Nantucket artist G.S. Hill offered remarques on the first 100 (of 750) of several of his color litho prints. These small original drawings added below the main image were a way for Greg to add a special meaning to the print. “I let the clients select a favorite Nantucket image from about 20 iconic scenes... including the Old Pump in ‘Sconset, Bartlett’s Farm Wagon, the fountain on Main Street, a Lightship Basket, the Oldest House...” he explained.

Greg and his wife Judi have just offered for sale in their G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf the original drawings from which clients could select their remarques. Larger than the actual remarque, these small drawings are a way to take home a Nantucket memory and add an original pencil drawing by G.S. Hill to your collection.

Cute and Fuzzy and Very Toxic

Back in 2005, when I was a field assistant with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, I spent many days in the heathlands on my hands and knees recording vegetation—an integral part of our research. One early fall day, as I placed my hand on the ground, a severe pain generating from the palm of my hand pulsed up through my arm. Looking back at the spot where my hand had been I expected to see a shard of glass or a giant rose thorn. None of the above. I had just squished a puss moth caterpillar with my palm.

Puss moth caterpillars, or flannel moths (Megalopygidae family), are described as one of the most toxic caterpillars in North America. They appear soft and harmless, and are often described as “wispy cotton” or “fur balls on leaves.” Despite their innocuous appearance, they can pack a punch! According to Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David Wagner, beneath the soft outer hair are hollow, poison-filled stinging spines that can deliver a pretty painful sting. When the caterpillar rubs or presses against skin, the venomous hairs can become embedded.

Flannel moths can be seen right now on Nantucket in one of its early caterpillar stages, when it looks like a cute tiny backside of a rabbit. These caterpillars are more often found in the North American south, but there are three species found farther north. On Nantucket we have Megalopyge crispata, the black-waved flannel moth, which is often found in the heathlands and shrublands of the outwash plain. They feed on a number of plants, but I’ve seen them most frequently on black huckleberry and bayberry.

Black-waved flannel moths are found as far north as New Hampshire, but are more predominant along the New England coast. Wagner describes coastal fields and meadows as particularly productive. I can attest to that, having seen them glisten with dew in the morning as they hang out in fields of black huckleberry.

How is it so toxic? The caterpillar defends itself from predation with its guard “hairs” which are hollow structures carrying venom. The hollow poison-filled stinging spines can act like tiny poison darts. The longer setae hairs curl at the ends and look like animal fur. For people, the venom can penetrate the skin causing itching and burning on the site as well as sharp pain. Exposure can also cause headaches and nausea. While they won’t kill you, they can pack a punch. Reaction stings can be severe, but the majority of people will only feel an irritation akin to a bee sting lasting about an hour. More susceptible patients can experience swelling, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, shock, and even respiratory distress. The severity of the sting can also vary with the thickness of the skin where the sting occurs. In his book, Wagner describes working with specimens in his caterpillar collection and inhaling some hairs. The irritation, burning, and swelling escalated to a point where he checked himself in to the local hospital. After an hour or so, the symptoms subsided and he was free to go.

As for me? Well, with numbness and swelling travelling up my arm, I was rushed to the hospital by my co-workers. Apparently, I am not only sensitive to the stings, but by squishing it with my palm, I had the full amount of toxin delivered to one of the most sensitive spots on the body. Hoping They’ll Come Home Again

The easiest thing to give up is hope. The engines that power Nantucket are far off and implacable. They don’t respond to picketing, petitions, or letters to the editor. Those engines no longer get their feet wet on-island. We sold them off to live on a winning lottery ticket and a one-way boat ride. We converted our homes into asset instruments.

So you have to ignore some things to keep going. So the easiest thing to do is to avoid Old South Road and Nobadeer Farm Road during the week, stay out of town in any month that doesn’t have an ‘r’ in it, and keep an eye open for white sharks. Easier still, keep your head down and wait until September.

But, if you have children, you can’t do the easiest thing. Children live on hope; every day we feed them the hope that the world can be better, the island will be better, and they can make it happen. That hope blooms in September, when parents and children see the new year as a step forward. If everyone is lucky and fortunate, Junior can succeed here, get some scholarship money, then come back and make a difference.

Schools are communities, and communities are centered on their schools. If we remember the championships of the mighty, mighty Whalers, or the attendance at a high school musical, or even the decorations on the Christmas Trees, the connection between town and gown is rubber band tight. If you look at the key and central jobs on-island, you see many sons and daughters of Nantucket High School at the hospital, the fire station, the police station, and, of course, back in the schools. In our lottery ticket present, this makes sense: hire the people who already have housing.

Unfortunately, the sons and daughters of Nantucket are leaving. They are on the boat rounding the Point and may not toss a penny.

In the middle of August, two weeks before the beginning of school, I received an ad for at least seven positions at Nantucket High School. The true hiring may be, I suspect, much worse. Fifteen teachers at the high school have left since the spring. This is worse than any place in Massachusetts, even the City of Boston.

Those candidates for math, science, Spanish, English, E.L.L. have to cross the water to the island, accept a generous pay package, then try to find housing. One motivated landlord asked $4,000 a month for a two-bedroom house in Tom Nevers. If a teacher were to make $85,000 a year, they would be among the highest paid teachers in the state and could just make a $4,000 rent with a couple of bucks left over for student loans, food, heat, and boat tickets. Of course, that teacher will never stay here permanently; the island’s median house price is at $3.6 million, which would translate into $20,000 a month.

So, teachers can’t afford to come out here to begin with, and, once here, they can’t afford to stay. In the sweet past, a contractor would marry a kindergarten teacher, and their combined incomes, with the addition of more than a little sweat equity, would nudge them into home ownership and Nantucket’s middle class. That can’t happen with a mortgage payment of $20,000 a month.

Housing is an identified nightmare. Good people are trying to address the problem with hope. But the fifteen teachers left behind their housing, including

Summer Bounty

It’s here... the sweet taste of summer that we’ve all been waiting for: Bartlett’s Farm is harvesting their corn crop! Every day freshly picked ears are offered for sale at the farm and from Bartlett’s farm trucks on Main Street and in Sconset. When it’s this fresh, corn is delicious simply steamed or even raw, but here are some of favorite recipes for this bounty of summer.

GRILLED CORN SALAD/SALSA

4 ears of corn, shucked

1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved

one 15oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained

2 avocados, diced

1 red onion, finely diced

1 orange bell pepper, diced small

1/4 cup cilantro, chopped

2 TBSP olive oil

1 lemon or 2 limes, juiced

1 -2 tsp. cumin

1/2 tsp. kosher salt

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

Brush ears of corn with olive oil, then roast them on the grill, turning often until desired doneness. Cool the corn and cut the kernels from cob.

Prep rest of the veggies as corn is cooling and then mix them with roast corn kernels in a large serving bowl. Toss well to combine.

In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together olive oil, lemon or lime juice, cumin, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over the veggies, toss gently to coat evenly and let rest about 10 minutes before serving.

PARMESAN ZUCCHINI AND CORN

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 zucchinis, diced

1 cup corn kernels, roasted

1/2 teaspoon fresh basil chopped

1/2 teaspoon fresh oregano chopped

1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped juice of 1 lime

2 Tbsp grated Parmesan, or more, to taste

Salt and pepper, to taste

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic to the skillet, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add zucchini, corn, basil, oregano, and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally, until zucchini is tender and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes; season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in lime juice & serve immediately, sprinkled with parm.

Cottage Hospital had never heard of puss moth caterpillars. They thought it must have been a bee sting, despite my protests. Two Benadryl and a few hours of sleep later, I was good as new. While they can be a nuisance, flannel moths are a native species. They are generally kept in control by natural predation. P retty soon they will mature to a point where they are ready to metamorphose. They overwinter in their cocoons which are often spun around the base of a food plant. They emerge in spring as adult moths. The common name “flannel moth” is due to the thick coating of fur-like setae on the moth body and legs which is predominantly yellowish-white.

This time of year, late summer, they appear as white cotton balls. Later, as they consume more vegetation, they will grow darker and less wispy, resembling a tiny tribble. Because of this cuteness factor, it would be wise to advise children about them so they do not pick them up.

So, what should you do if stung by a puss moth caterpillar?

Wash the skin with soap and water.

Use local cooling like an ice pack to reduce pain and swelling.

Rub the area with an alcohol swab.

Putting tape on the site and then ripping it off can remove the embedded hairs.

Puss caterpillars may be one of the most toxic of species found here, but they still have nothing on ticks.

sand eels, a huge baitfish for the Nantucket fishery. “The sand eels are everywhere right now!”

Lynne’s catch got my line on the fishing gossip telegraph humming. So if they’re getting albies from the boats, the beach albies won’t be far behind, right? Right, agreed my fishing buddies. So who’s going to do something about this situation? Noah Karberg, that’s who! Two days after Lynne’s catch, Noah drove as far up as is currently allowed on Great Point. He then hiked a mile or so up to the point and got busy, catching some big ol’ bluefish, a couple of bonito, and, yes, you guessed it—Nantucket’s first beach false albacore for 2023! Noah told me that he fishes a fairly heavy setup: a 10’ St. Croix Triumph rod paired with a Penn Slammer 4500 high speed reel, 30 lb. braided line and a fluorocarbon leader. Noah said, “With this setup I can hit the spots, into the wind, and retrieve at the right speed and level in the water column without burning out my arm. Most of my fish come from blind casting. Drag is important: these fish need to run and if you’re too tight and heavy, they’ll pull the hook.” Noah added that sometimes a heavier drag is needed if you have to pull your fish past seals.

Noah’s big news got my fellow beach anglers a-buzzing! One of my favorites texted me, saying that fishing for albies is “…probably the most exciting thing I do with my clothes on.” If you know, you know, right? The albies are game changers for the Nantucket fishing community. My brother Bill said, “When you hook an albie, it becomes a battle that you can lose in many different ways. Was that leader in good shape? Where’s that (bleeping) seal that you just saw?” More truth! John Colton said that his two favorite things about the albies are “…the crazy strike and initial run, and the ‘damn, I think I lost it’ feeling when it swims towards you. Your brain says reel like a banshee and then the adrenaline rush when the line goes tight again.” John added that he loves when the false albacore are “…greyhounding towards you and you time your cast perfectly and then the whitewater explodes!” He’s so right!

Dave Bold made a great point about the arrival of Mr. Albert, saying that it’s a sure sign that summer is coming to an end and that the Inshore Classic fishing tournament is right around the corner. Yessir! Brian Majczak says, “Albies are

the icing on the cake to the surfcasting season on Nantucket. There is nothing like the explosion of an albie hammering your lure and the split second that follows as the line begins to empty from the reel. And then a seal steals your albie and you lose a $20 lure. Call it a day? Nope! You tie another $20 on and eventually find yourself on the walk of shame down the beach, trying to get your lure and fish back from the seal. Frustrated, you pack up your things and drive two miles down the beach. Wash, rinse, repeat!” Brian is quite right—there’s no quitting in albie fishing!

Corey Gammill, another fantastic charter boat captain, provided some insight to me about the false albacore fishery as we both waited out some weather. Corey contends that the albie population has increased over the past 10 years. “The eye test is that the trend of the albie fishery is upward. The strange thing is that there seems to be fewer bonito, at least from the boat perspective. I expect that the albie action will be heating up pretty soon. The bait is here and the fish are on the move.”

I asked what his favorite lure is for targeting the false albacore. Corey replied without hesitation: “The Island X 120. I like casting ability for my albie lures. It’s a great lure to throw and a great producer!” I mentioned to Corey that I love that lure all summer long for bluefish. I asked if he keeps the belly hook on the 120 or removes it (I tend to use those lures for bluefish, so the belly hook gets removed). Corey said that he catches approximately half of his false albacore on that belly hook. You can bet that I spent the rest of the rain delay putting belly hooks back on my Island X 120 lures!

Corey told me that he feels that the false albacore fishing here on Nantucket exceeds any other beach location in the northeast region, including Montauk. “There’s not a spot that rivals Nantucket for beach albies. All it takes is two good days of wind to move the bait towards us and then it’s on. The albie fishing exploded on August 20 of last year.”

So spread the word, folks: the albies are coming! And there’s just nothing like it. Now get out there and get after them! Remember to use a minimum of terminal tackle and to get your lure moving fast, fast, fast. And reel like crazy if you hook one and your line goes slack—the albie is swimming towards you!

Prior to starting Butler’s of Far Hills, Inc. in beautiful Far Hills, New Jersey, Haines knew he’d pursue a career in the arts. “I was a music and art major, and I’d always loved architecture. After graduating, I turned back to architecture and realized I love the finishing details…I like the spontaneity of interior design, and we do a lot of architectural details,” he explained. “When my wife and I opened our business in 1984, it was the right time, the right place, and we had the right clients. We were featured widely in magazines, and the business grew quickly.”

Haines and his interiors won national recognition. He has been cited more than once on the House Beautiful list of “Ten Best Show House Rooms” in the country and has received many awards for his timeless designs.

Jeffrey Haines and his family first came to Nantucket Island decades ago, enjoying summer vacations in ‘Sconset Village. “I kept thinking that I could bring my business to Nantucket,” Haines explained, “but my wife kept saying to me ‘don’t you want a vacation?’ So we waited.”

Then, twenty-five years ago, they decided to open The J. Butler Collection on Centre Street. They brought to Nantucket a tasteful selection of unique pieces they discovered during their travels: pillows, glassware, vases, antiques, lamps,

Island designers loved it: they came in and bought for their clients.” Every season he reinvented the character of the shop with a different accent color: his clients were excited to see what new design pieces he would open with in June, and they’d ask him “what’s this year’s color?”

Once his daughters were older, Haines realized that he did have time during the summer to offer his award-winning interior design talents to clients on Nantucket. “I love every bit of [interior design]: it’s stimulating, fun, positive, inspiring, encouraging….You get to know the people, and I’m making people feel happy…You’ve got to love what you do, and I do love it.”

Haines likes to equate the design of a space to reading a book. “First you have to like the cover and the idea. Then when we actually put it all together, you can’t have every chapter be the best: there must be connections to bring one chapter to the next. It should be the same with a home—I like it to flow, to connect, to make sense so that our clients never tire of the look.”

houses they owned. They left behind a very generous pay raise.

Most left behind an island that nurtured them, graduated them, and welcomed them back. They were the dream of the John O’Neill’s Vision 2020 from their childhoods: the fresh, ripe apples of hope.

And now they are gone.

As Ellie Kinsella said in her graduation address “Whenever you feel like you’re trapped, reflect on yourself.” They reflected. And they left.

The frustration that sent them away from a familiar home and high pay must arise from other fires. The support system at the school is cracking. Not only is the school missing teachers, they are missing qualified bus drivers, teacher’s aids, cleaners, administrators, and substitute teachers. Every problem magnifies. A student writes a slur on bathroom walls, is the only solution to close the bathrooms? Without subs, teachers cover for other teachers, leaving no prep time. The “new” building has entered its third decade with predictable issues. When you run out of duct tape, what do you do?

The administrators are as overwhelmed as the roof. When your days are spent putting out fires (or finding a new place to live), communication and teacher evaluations fall down the priority list, somewhere below student discipline and above cell phones. The mantra of every troubled school is “I just close my door and teach.” These problems seep through closed doors.

In the familiar past, when Nantucket High School

held graduation in the auditorium for fewer than one hundred kids named Gardner, Ranney, and Fox, most of the in-school problems could be addressed. Today’s students are needier than the graduates at the turn of the century. The current high school is overstuffed with more than 575 students (the freshman class has 175 registered). Of those, well over a third learned another language before they learned English. Many have high needs. I would be willing to bet the vast majority of the new Whalers live under roofs that their parents don’t own.

Nantucket Public Schools presents the bromide “Today’s kids, Tomorrow’s future.” Yesterday’s kids made the present. They went to school, excelled, and returned to run businesses, patrol the streets, fight fires, and teach the young. They did what we dreamed. But it’s hard to feel good about tomorrow’s future if ‘Yesterday’s kids’ are drifting away on every tide.

Carol Crowell, long-time island educator, had a needlepoint hanging in her office: “Their parents send us the best they have.” The “best they have” come to high school with hope of making the world and the island a better, fairer, stronger place. They make robots, they plant eelgrass, they think, they argue, they write. And they even build sheds. They will do all, and more than we expect.

But the time has come for the parents to send more than their kids. They also need to hope, dream, and work for an island that, in twenty years, will have the current students return as career firemen, policemen, doctors, nurses, teachers, and town administrators. All of us parents need to help claw back an island where our kids could live and thrive. Hope isn’t just for kids. Superintendent Hallet wants the graduates. “Go out and show the world what you’re made of.” I hope they can come back. And stay.

Summer Bounty

SUMMER CORN CHOWDER

8 ears fresh sweet corn, shucked and kernels cut from cob 3 Tbsp butter

6 slices of smoky bacon, cut into 1/4 inch pieces

1 medium yellow onion diced small

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 clove garlic, minced

5 cups water or vegitable stalk

1 lb yukon gold potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch pieces

1/2 tsp dried thyme

1 bay leaf

1 cup half and half

2-3 TBSP chopped fresh chives

Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and bacon and cook, stirring frequently, until onion has softened and started to brown lightly.

Add in the flour and garlic and cook 1-1/2 minutes.

While whisking, gradually pour in 5 cups of water or vegetable stock.

Stir in corn kernels, potatoes, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring to a light boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and allow to simmer, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.

Remove bay leaf then transfer 2-1/2 cups of the chowder to a blender and blend until smooth. Stir the mixture back into the pot and stir in half and half. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Sprinkle each serving with chives, serve hot.

TIP: sear some bay scallops that you froze from last winter’s harvest, and “float” them in the center of the soup as an extra special Nantucket garnish!

NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock.
