Old Mill Restoration to Start in Early August

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will conduct a major restoration project at the Old Mill, funded by the Nantucket Community Preservation Committee (CPC), beginning in early August 2024. The project will include critical work such as re-shingling the entire structure, pest control and repairs, and overall structural repairs and reinforcement. The project will also include visitor experience enhancements with an unintrusive interpretive shed on the property for ADA accessibility enhancements.

“We greatly appreciate the continued support and generosity of the CPC and their recognition of the importance of this project. This work will address critical repairs to the mill and enhance the visitor experience for years to come at one of the island’s most cherished landmarks,” says Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director. “Although it’s difficult for this work to begin during the summer season, it is vital to conduct aspects of this project during mild weather conditions of the summer and fall to protect the structure while restoration is underway.”

Built in 1746, the Old Mill is believed to be the oldest operating windmill in the United States. It is a “smock mill” with a fixed body containing the machinery and a cap that turns to face the vanes and sails into the wind. The Old Mill saw many years of use and is the only surviving mill of the five that once stood overlooking Nantucket town. When the mill appeared on the auction block in 1897, the NHA secured the mill with a successful bid of $885. After minor repairs over the years—and major overhauls in 1930, 1936, and 1983—the mill can grind corn just as it has for more than two centuries. The Old Mill was designated an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1992.

Nantucket’s Old Mill is currently open to visitors Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 am to 4pm, and the Nantucket Historical Association is offering free admission for all. It will close for the season on Saturday, August 3.

In 2022, the NHA committed $2 million and 24 months to a bout of property rehabilitation that included the replacement of the slate roof at the Whaling Museum’s Candle Factory, extensive masonry restoration at the Research Library, and upgrades to the fire suppression system at the Hadwen House, to name just a few improvements. The NHA is now continuing this push for preservation work, the rehabilitation of the Old Mill, as well as preservation of the north wall of the Candle Factory planned for this fall, and the installation of new storm windows at Greater Light to come.

To conduct these projects with preservation in mind, the NHA uses extensive records of their historic properties for reference. Each planned project begins in the archives with a detailed look at the building’s construction and maintenance history. The NHA then works with preservation professionals to ensure that any work accomplishes contemporary goals like accessibility, safety, and climate preparedness without disturbing the historic fabric of the building.

Celebrating One of Our Island’s Good Neighbors

Nantucket teacher, entrepreneur, and long-time resident Leah Bayer has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award. This esteemed accolade recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and selflessness in making Nantucket a better place through their unwavering commitment to the community. Leah Bayer will be honored at the Dreamland’s annual fundraiser, The DreamBIG event this Sunday, July 28.

Selected by a distinguished panel of judges comprising Dreamland’s board of directors and prominent community leaders, Leah Bayer of Aunt Leah’s Fudge, has exemplified the compassion and service fostered by Fred Rogers throughout her life. With unparalleled contributions and tireless efforts, Leah Bayer has left an indelible impact on the lives of countless individuals in Nantucket.

Among the numerous testimonials submitted in support of Leah Bayer’s nomination, her dedication to our local community’s first responders stood out. One nominator expressed, “Aunt Leah marks every major holiday on her calendar and makes sure she delivers fudge to the Nantucket hospital, fire station, and police departments, rain or shine. She takes care of so many service workers with drinks and snacks who are out doing their daily duties. She takes the time to get to know people and their family and always asks how they and their families are doing.”

Leah Bayer has been owner and operator of Aunt Leah’s Fudge for more than 40 years. During her many years as a teacher in the Nantucket school system, she has nurtured many young islanders who love to stop by her shop on Straight Wharf to say hello and show her how much she meant to them.

“Leah Bayer's exceptional qualities of compassion, community service, and selflessness truly embody the spirit of the Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award,” commented Alicia Carney, executive director of Nantucket Dreamland. “Her love of this community and the thousands of lives, including generations of families, that she has impacted is incredible. Just stop by her shop and ask her about the continued on page 10

Livin’ the Dream

“Hey, how’s it going?”

“Ah, you know… Just living the dream…”

Living the dream. Don’t ask me why, but that trite phrase just grates on my nerves. The delivery of this ditty has to be done with complete deadpan in order to maximize the ironic impact. I’m pretty sure that the first place I ever heard this used was in the wild and wacky world of law enforcement. The optimum context was when greeting an officer who had just completed a 12-hour shift, only to learn that he was now being held for a four-hour traffic detail of some sort. Yeah, just living the dream.

This phrase seemed to be appropriate for what the world, the country, the state, and the island have been experiencing these past few weeks. Politicians are being shot at, literally instead of figuratively. World War III seems to be warming up in the bullpen. Want some more? Here ya go: how about a global computer outage that messes up little things like air travel, medical procedures, and all the way down to Mass. State Inspection stations (I’m guessing on that last one). You know, just living the dream…

But wait—there’s more! How about an environmental disaster that threatens so much of what’s great about our beautiful little island? One wind turbine blade breaks up (out of the 19 currently in place, out of the 62 total scheduled to be installed) and the entire south shore of the island is shut down. Poof—gone! Yeah, just living the dream.

So what was the cherry on top of all of our wonderful Nantucket news this week? Benzo, a brindle colored bug-eyed terrier of some sort, had gone missing. His family was crushed. As a dog lover, I felt their pain. I also sensed that the missing Benzo had the potential to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of overwhelmingly bad news. Where’s Mr. Rogers when you need him? Come back home, Fred Rogers: this dream we’re living is too much right about now.

Nathan Skerritt is a fantastic Nantucket beach fisher. I met him last year at the awards ceremony for the August Blues Fishing Tournament (have you signed up yet? Let’s go!). Nate’s Instagram account is Strangeagent007, and it’s a must follow. There’s no one funnier than Nathan on our local beach fishing scene, and his fishing videos are always the best. Please keep that in mind when you read this post concerning the environmental mess that Nathan allowed me to share here:

“Went fishing at first light this morning…highly recommended to wear shoes instead of enjoy my feet in the sand…my salvation…my “break from “reality”…. Thanks to this Vinecontinued on page 24

too strong a word. How about: it gave us an excuse to head to the beach to swim and play in the water. Whether on vacation, trying to occupy the kids, or just i need of a little salt water solace, many of us have escaped to the beach these past few weeks.

My beach-going recently has been for a dip to cool off, but also to see what I can find for the Nantucket BioBlitz. You can read more about the BioBlitz from a previous column (yesterdaysisland.com/join-the-blitz/). I was able to log in quite a few finds along both the north and south shorelines. The Demands of Optimism

There is nothing quite so heartening and thrilling than for the world to turn around and demonstrate that you were right all along. Your faith and your intellect enjoys a well-deserved trip around the Olympic stadium, shaking hands and waving flags. Most enjoyable, you run past your critics with their heads down and eyes averted. Life does not always validate your parking, but when it does, you take your trot with a spring in your step and a glint in your eye.

So it must feel to those who opposed the wind turbines. The machines remain out in the water, hammered into the seabed, and blinking in the Madaket night. However, one blade blew off, broke apart, and sprinkled the South Shore beaches with “all natural fiberglass.” During the hottest week of the year (in the coolest summer of the upcoming century) the beaches were off-limits for a day and under close eye for a few more, as the hunks of a progressive and ecological future washed up in hazardous and indigestible green chunks.

Truth be told, the wonderful liquid lunch of Schadenfreude has been available to many of us, no matter the political stripe. Environmentalists watch the shark feeding frenzy, point at the global warming signs, and tap the German keg. Slow growth proponents, who stood on a (temporary) rotary at the end of Fairgrounds Road and who shouted at town meeting, have a nice red cup of that tasty German liquid as the truck traffic on Nobadeer and Old South Road come together in one long traffic jam of landscapers, plumbers, and selectpeople. Pump the tap and keep the red cups coming. Plenty for everybody.

Pessimism wins points. If you figure that whatever we do is bound to fail, when it does fail, you get to be right. The old man who yells at clouds enjoys watching the sharks circle, the traffic back up, and the fiberglass tumble in. Now, he might not be right for long, but he doesn’t have to be. If the sharks swim away to chummier shores next year, he still has the victory on his record. He is safe.

NANTUCKET ISLAND

Nantucket’s beautiful & pristine shorelines. For gentle surf, go to north shore beaches like Jetties, Steps Beach, Dionis, & Brant Point. For experienced swimmers who like heavier surf, visit Cisco, Surfside, Nobadeer, & Tom Nevers Beach. If you have senior members, Jetties and Sconset beaches is among the easier to access. Not all beaches have lifeguards, and only a few have facilities.

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. Follow the QR code to discover miles of bike paths, where to rent bikes, biking tips, and where to fi nd water stations along the way.

Demands of Optimism

from page 9

Now, pessimists (and I am one) live in the privileged past. Things were better then because we were younger and stupider. We didn’t think about the consequences of cigarettes, beach fires, or removing the miniature golf course and replacing it with housing. Now, as I sit on my porch and consider the sassy and misbehaving clouds, I can drift back to those halcyon Madequecham Jams of my youth and ignore the slow roll to the Milestone Rotary.

Pessimists, at core, want things to stop changing. We want the climate to stay cooler, the ice caps to remain solid for Santa and the Polar Bears, and that the housing developments to stop. Now, because we doze on our porch and drift back into a sunny world without consequences, that brilliant and clear future still has high paying jobs, astronomical summer rental checks, and cheap gas. Then, the wind shifts and we wake to a world of contrary and insubordinate clouds.

The beauty of the stupid past was that each day passed in isolation from the ones before and after. Nothing changed because we didn’t notice it changing. But the consequences of our decisions build. Everything we do and have done have led us to the present we have today. We wanted to sell our land for top dollar, and those top-dollar-bidders brought a car for the nanny, need the pool cleaned, and have to pick up some Spanish potato chips for the kids. Had we been optimists in the golden age of Walter Beinecke and Ted Kennedy, we would have voted to make Nantucket a part of National Seashore, and we could drive anywhere we wanted. But we would miss the real estate sales, the rent checks, and the truffle potato chips.

Pessimists can trust that humans are selfish and stupid: optimists hope that humans can be selfless and smart. Pessimists win points, but optimists win championships. In a short time frame, the pessimists are going to be right: Daddy won’t give up smoking this weekend. But, over the course of years and decades, the optimists win the long game:

Daddy will trade in his Newports for Reese’s Cups. As stunning as it may be to realize, optimistic Nantucket has won the long game. Walter Beinecke saw a future for the island that involved yachts, tourists, and $1000 bottles of French Champagne. A little over forty years ago, the town established the Land Bank to insure that the islanders would always have access to the water and would always have open land. My fellow pessimists had a glorious time in the newspapers back then, but those optimistic acts made Nantucket different and successful. Up and down the coasts of the country, you can find residents of island after island who will happily trade our problems for theirs.

But optimism demands something that lonely old men won’t do as they rock away in the sun and drink bourbon by the batch. Optimists require trust and faith. Pessimism is a short-lived and solitary pleasure, while optimism offers longer and permanent joys. The sky does not stand still, but blows storm after storm overhead. In the future, perhaps we can find a use for those naughty and disobedient clouds.

Schadenfreude, no matter how cold, is a bitter draught. All of my pessimist friends who celebrated the collapse of the Westmoor purchase and the limits on automobiles have to tip their caps to their friends with the red cups. Maybe they were right after all and our Tomorrows won’t be copies of my bright and brilliant Yesterday.

The optimist looks forward while the pessimist closes his eyes. Our forty-year future on this island will have less gas, less diesel, and a lot more wind and solar power. I have to work on having faith and trust. Those who work on these turbines will have to figure out what shredded the vane before one of the whirling ladies of the Caribbean comes for a visit and takes the fiberglass like so many pieces of silverware. I hope they can. But that Hope isn’t easy.

EDITORS NOTE: The Town of Nantucket reminds the public:

• DO NOT put any debris from the Vineyard Wind turbine in your home garbage.

• DO NOT bring debris from the Vineyard Wind turbine to the landfill.

The Wrack Line

about walking along the beach investigating the shore and the wrack line is that you’re more often looking for the remnants of something alive—a shell, a driedup piece of seaweed—but it’s still a biodiversity smorgasbord with clues for what is in the waters around Nantucket.

The wrack line is technically the area on the beach where organic material and other debris is deposited at high tide. Among the flotsam and jetsam of the wrack line, many treasures from the sea await. And occasionally a human-made treasure. Searching for sea glass is ever popular: my grandmother used to take us to beaches in Rhode Island when I was a little girl to find as many pieces of sea glass in as many colors as we could for her collection. Blues, greens, white, and the occasional purple—and the ever-elusive red glass. Today, however, recycling and a heightened sense of the problems caused by litter, have reduced sea glass to a rare find. When my son was small, his version of “sea glass” were shards of newly broken bottles. Now, we tend to bring a bag for trash to comb the beach. And, with recent undesirable wind farm detritus, a bag for debris (and potentially shoes to protect your feet) is a wise idea. Beyond sea glass or trash, the beach is littered with riches from the sea. Some are common, others rare, and most have some origin with a living thing. One thing is definitely true; none of it is boring! Exploring north shore beaches and the harbor, there are plenty of areas for beachcombing. With shallow waters, low wave action, and big in-going and outgoing tides, the wrack lines of these beaches tend to leave more in the throng. You can generally tell the wrack line edge right off by the line of eel grass coiled parallel to the ocean. The discarded eel grass is actually a gift from the sea itself. Eel grass remnants make great mulch once rinsed off. Other sea weeds can also be mixed in with compost to add additional nutrients. It can help retain soil moisture and prevent weeds when used in garden beds to protect precious seedlings. At the end of the season, the mulch can be mixed into the soil for added nutrients.

Beyond the eel grass, or rather within the tangled coils of it on the beach, we can find other bits and bobs that we don’t need to harvest. The most common thing on north shore beaches are slipper shells. The common slipper shell

The Wrack Line

(Crepidula fornicata) is a marine snail. About two inches or less in size, they can be gray, white, pink, or a combination. They are usually found stacked on top of each other when they wash ashore. When in a stack, the young on top are male, the bottom is female and the ones in the middle are hermaphrodites. The top males fertilize the slipper shell below and the sexes alternate back and forth to the bottom of the stack.

Sometimes called “Portuguese sweet meats,” slipper snails have been described as “poor man’s scallops.” To get at the meat, slide your finger underneath the muscle (foot) and pinch, pulling towards the wider end to free it from the shell. Rinse it in the sea, and you can eat it right on the beach to the delight of your fellow beach-goers.

Another shell I frequently encounter, especially at Dionis or Steps Beaches are mermaid toenails (aka jingle shells). These are the small, often translucent shells that can be shiny yellow, white, or pale orange. The jingle shell (Anomia simplex) is a common intertidal species found attached to rocks, other mollusks and arthropods. It cannot move once it is attached to a substrate.

These shells are great for children since they are often found with a small hole and can be easily strung onto an impromptu beach necklace. The holes are actually where the valve of the animal was located, but was left attached to the substrate when the shell came off.

Mermaid’s purses are another beach treasure. These rectangular horny “purses” are actually egg cases of skate (typically the little skate, Raja erinacea), a relative of sharks and rays. They are the most common skate in northern inshore waters, thus, their egg cases are plentiful on the beach. The egg cases are made of keratin, the same substance of which human fingernails are composed. An egg case forms around each individual skate embryo just before the mother deposits the cases on the sea floor. The long, curved projections on each corner of the egg tend to catch on seaweed or other objects, helping to anchor the egg case to the bottom. The horns serve to extract oxygen from the water and to release waste back into the water. The egg cases are very tough and hard to penetrate, deterring predators.

Initially the egg cases are waterproof because the embryos do not have gills

from page 19 continued on page 21

until after three weeks of development. Then small holes open in the tips of the horns, admitting seawater, and the young skate learns to live as an underwater creature. When the time comes for the young skate to escape, the egg case splits open at one end and the youngster emerges.

One of the most common beach finds among the eel grass and seaweed is actually the egg case for the whelk snail. The snake-like structures are difficult to figure out at first. What creature could have made this thing? The long egg case (which can be up to 2 feet long) is made up of many quarter-sized chitinous egg cases. Each egg case (or capsule) holds numerous individual baby whelk. The shape of the capsule is specific to the type of whelk species, so you may be able to find more than one type. If the eggs haven’t hatched by the time you find them dried on the beach, you may be able to find some miniscule whelk shells inside.

Of course, there are many more shells and sea creatures to investigate. Using iNaturalist or a beach-comber guide, you can see what other people have found on the beach and what creatures they are or were from.

On the south shore, there are a few creatures that, because of the habitat, aren’t typically found along the north shore. Some of my chosen beaches to walk are Miacomet, Fisherman’s, and the beaches east or west of Cisco. A personal favorite of these areas is the mole crab (Emerita talpoida). They can be found at the shore alive and their shells are often in the wrack. The mole crab (also known as a sand crab or sand flea) is a small but mighty sea creature that lives just below the surface of the sand. If you’ve ever visited a beach on the East Coast, you most likely have encountered mole crabs without even knowing it. Perfectly camouflaged, if one is exposed by a wave, a person’s foot, or a child digging at the surf’s edge, it will dive back under the sand before you even know it's there. They are the color of the sand and live mostly buried in the intertidal zone. Like other crabs, these little one-inch creatures have ten legs, but theirs are adapted for swimming and digging, not for walking or defense—they have no claws. When you see the tiny holes in the sand at the water’s edge, dig there and chances are you will find some buried mole crabs. My son and I used to dig them up and have “mole crab races” to see whose chosen crab would reach the water first. As a side note, they also make good bait for beach fishing.

There are so many other finds to explore: scallop and whelk shells, moon snails, razor clams, oysters, to name just a few. That doesn’t even count the multitude of seaweed species! You can make a scavenger hunt list for little ones you bring to the beach or, better yet, get out there and explore! You never know what you’re going to find.

Family Adventures on the Water

Nantucket, with its rich maritime history, natural beauty, and coastal vistas, offers a variety of adventures for families seeking memorable experiences on the water. Whether you're casting lines for the day's catch, learning to hoist the sails aboard historic vessels, or relaxing as you enjoy unparalleled views of our island from the water, here are four different outings that promise fun and learning for all ages.

Start early with the thrill of a charter fishing trip aboard the Herbert T Children eagerly grasp their rods, eyes sparkling with excitement as they envision the treasures that lie beneath the waves. Captain Fred Tonkin will share his knowledge and passion plus some fun fish tales, making each trip a lesson in the joys of fishing. Every tug on the line from a Nantucket blue will be met with cheers of triumph.

Captain Fred has more than 40 years experience sport fishing, and he knows the best spots and methods. He enjoys taking families out and introducing all ages to fishing, offering valuable tips for first-timers and trading stories with anglers. Children can reel in blues under his expert guidance, and the excitement peaks at the dock when Captain Fred cleans the catch, for a dinner fresh from the sea.

Herbert T charters are available at 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm. All gear and bait are included.

If yours is a family of experienced fishermen, Captain Fred can take you out on a private charter where he finds the sauce every time. Five-hour trips on the Herbert T are designed for anglers specifically looking to target striped bass. Ask him about op-

portunities to bottom fish for fluke and sea bass for a portion of the trip.

You’ll find the Herbert T on Straight Wharf at Slip 14: stop by to book a charter or call 508-228-6655 (daytime) or 508-257-4176 (evenings).

One slip over on Straight Wharf, you’ll find Endeavor, the longest operating sailing charter on Nantucket. Captain Jim Genthner welcomes all ages aboard this Friendship Sloop that he built when they join him on a leisurely sail past Brant Point Lighthouse, through the jetties, and into Nantucket Sound. During the 90-minute day sail, kids can lend a hand raising sails and feel the exhilaration of the wind through their hair.

During the sail, Captain Jim will regale passengers with Nantucket’s exciting maritime history and point out sights along the waterfront. He can trade sailing stories and share his knowledge of traditional boat building.

The 90-minute sail aboard Endeavor departs at 10 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm.

They also offer a sunset cruise. Singles, couples, and small families are welcome to join these public sails: it’s a fun way to meet and engage with fellow travelers.

Captain Jim also offers private charters aboard Endeavor, which is Coast Guard certified to carry 14 passengers. Private sails are a great choice for multigenerational trips and are a great way to share the wonder of sailing with your children and grandchildren. Private charters are fun and memorable for celebrations (yes, you can bring aboard beverages and snacks), bachelor and bachelorette parties, family reunions, and proposals—there have even been weddings on Endeavor.

To book a public sail or charter, call 508-228-5585, visit endeavorsailing.com, or stop by Slip #1015 on Straight Wharf, across from the Hyline ticket office.

Nantucket by Water is another beloved local enterprise. Their array of tours and eco-tours caters to diverse tastes and a range of ages, delighting passengers from youngsters to grandparents. They have several one-hour cruises, including an Ice Cream Cruise, where you enjoy an indulgent treat as you glide around the harbor, past luxurious yachts and waterfront estates. On the Whaling History Cruise, passengers learn about Nantucket's storied past with engaging narratives on whaling history while seeing historic landmarks. There’s also a Kids’ Fishing Trip with a hands-on introduction to catch-and-release fishing. Their longer 90-minute adventures include a Shanty Singers Cruise featuring local musicians; a Sip & Fish Cruise with fun for both kids and parents; a BYOB Cocktail Cruise for ages 21+ with breathtaking views and on-board music; and a Sunset Cruise. Nantucket by Water also offers a 2-hour Oyster Farm Cruise to 5th Bend Oyster Farm, during which you will learn how oyster farming in Nantucket waters is done and how it is beneficial to our island.

Private charters are also available, and the crew of Nantucket by Water is happy to help you design a custom experience on The Wampum for small groups of up to 11,

or on The Minke for larger groups of up to 23 passengers.

To explore options and book your cruise, stop by Slip 1011 on Straight Wharf, visit nantucketbywater.com, or call 508-228-7037

For a true taste of history, step back in time aboard the majestic Tall Ship Lynx: a true interpretation of a privateer from the War of 1812. This adventure isn't just about sailing; it's an immersive educational experience where families actively participate in sail training aboard a wooden sailing ship.

Captain Donald Peacock and his engaging and experienced crew tell tales of the sea, encourage passengers to help hoist the sails, show how to steer the ship, ring the bell, and explain how they navigate the seas as sailors did centuries ago. You might even hear a sea shanty or two, all while experiencing first-hand Nantucket's maritime heritage.

Day Sails depart at 1 pm, and Sunset Sails depart at 5 pm. Private charters aboard Lynx for a three-hour sunset sail are available for up to 40 passengers. Book your adventure at tallshiplynx.org

The Lynx is proud to partner with the Egan Maritime Institute of Nantucket to offer a combined curriculum called “Sea of Opportunities.” In addition to unique educational opportunities for students, this partnership also offers special public programs such as Sea Songs aboard the Tall Ship Lynx (July 26), Youth Adventure Sails (July 31 and August 21), and Tall Ship Lynx Sunset Sail & Shipwreck Stories (August 6). The partner sails can be booked at eganmaritime.org/tall-ship-lynx

Each of these adventures on the water offers a distinct flavor of Nantucket's maritime charm, whether you're angling for fish, reliving history on the Tall Ship Lynx, or sailing and cruising with loved ones. Be sure to book in advance and prepare for memorable views and unforgettable island adventures on the water, where learning and leisure blend seamlessly on the shimmering seas.

Livin’ the Dream

yard Wind Farm crisis…we are left to watch our piece of heaven get slapped with a brutal littering…one that we have zero clue about true future repercussions…..my sand…my fish… my sunrises…what have we done….”

Exactly, Nate: what have we done? Boy, I sure hope that those island residents who shilled for this Vineyard Wind project are enjoying the thirty pieces of silver they were paid. Grrrrrr…

I knew that I had a column to write and a deadline fast approaching. I just couldn’t seem to get started—the fog of negativity had me completely enveloped. So this morning I did what I often do when the black cloud tries to darken my day: I grabbed some fishing gear and headed to Great Point. I said a little prayer that I would get what I needed to change my attitude back to one of gratitude. Per usual, God did not disappoint.

As I drove up the outside edge of the peninsula, I saw a couple of guys fishing. I watched each fisher’s technique as I slowly rolled up the eastern shore. The first guy looked squared away: his casting technique was strong. Do I know him? Nah, he’s not from around here. He’s got a tackle bag on his shoulder, a true giveaway that someone is both a serious fisher and from places other than Nantucket. What about this next guy? Nope, look at the way he removes his right hand from the rod as he casts. I call it the magic wand wave. Casting like that is like running your car on half of the cylinders—so much casting power is wasted!

How about this guy in the black Jeep? He’s got a tournament shirt on from the Inshore Classic. He might know what’s up, I figured. I watched as he casted his lure. Much like me, this guy was built for power, not speed. He generated a great rod whip with his cast—yeah, that’s someone who puts his time in. Alas, I didn’t recognize the man, so I kept on rolling.

The wind had gone back out of the southeast, so I decided to roll straight to the “South Parking Lot.” I love this area and frequently fish it with my clients. To my dismay, I saw a pile of garbage as I walked to the water. Four empty packs of large Eagle Claw hooks, most likely used for bait fishing. Some sandwich wrappers. An empty purple can of Downeast blackberry hard cider. And, worst of all, about 50 yards of heavy-duty braided fishing line, strewn on the ground. Ugh: this mess was left by a fellow fisher. C’mon, people, be better than this! I picked up the junk and tossed it into the back of my truck.

This fishing spot had me casting directly into the wind, throwing my lure towards the silhouette of Nantucket’s center. Birds were working along the shore and there was a ton of “rain bait,” tiny little minnows, that jumped when my lure passed by them. It looked like things were lining up for a good morning.

I heard a vehicle approaching... it was the black Jeep that I had passed by earlier. The driver exited and headed my way with a couple of fishing rods in hand. We waved to each other as he approached. I told him that I’d only taken a few casts before he showed up. He nodded and got busy, throwing a unique yellow lure with a dressed single hook. I watched his lure as he retrieved it, figuring a hungry bluefish was going to smash it. Nope, didn’t happen.

After about 15 minutes of fruitless casting, we introduced ourselves. My new acquaintance was RK Russell. RK is one of those people who is sent to brighten things up. I immediately felt better talking with him. I asked him about the unique yellow lure he was throwing.

“Oh, I made that. I got into lure making when I gave up partying,” he laughed. RK told me it really wasn’t that hard to make. Now it was my turn to laugh. His lure was beautifully crafted, and creating it was far beyond any abilities that I might possess.

We talked for about as many minutes as we fished. RK told me that he had first been brought to Nantucket when he was eight months old. It had always been a dream of his to live on the island. That dream became a reality after he retired from running his printing business about six years ago.

“I do some bartending here and there, at the Angler’s Club and at the Brotherhood. I spend most of my free time in my wood shop.” It was clear that RK loves his new life here on-island. He and I discussed our shared excitement for the upcoming August Blues tournament. The prospect of catching a monster gator bluefish and winning the Tedy Bruschi Brew-Fish prize has us both ready to fish hard!

RK and I exchanged contact information and fishing lures. He gave me a beautiful black version of the lure he had been throwing, perfect for striper fishing at night. I gave him one of the cool new Haws River Tackle StingSilver metal lures that I think will crush the false albacore and bonito. What RK may not have known was that he gave me renewed energy to push through the negative fog. I’m grateful, my friend!

When I got home, I learned that the elusive Benzo had been found and reunited with his family. That joyous news was the result of a four-day effort by this amazing community. Well done, all!

Yes, the day is much brighter now. No, all of the world / country / island problems have not miraculously vanished. But maybe we can all benefit from the lesson of Benzo and work together to a better end. Then, just maybe, we will truly be living the dream.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
