A Sea Monster Visits

Nantucket’s famous sea monster visits our island again this week when the Nantucket Historical Association celebrates its “Summer of Sarg” on Monday, August 5 with a free Community Day from 10 am to 3 pm. The re-creation of Tony Sarg’s 75-foot sea monster balloon will be on display for all to see, enjoy, and pose with for photos at Children’s Beach during this festive event.

“To say we are excited about bringing a re-creation of one of Tony’s Sarg Thanksgiving Day Parade-sized balloons to the island this summer is an understatement. With our featured exhibition about Tony Sarg this season, our staff has been intentionally weaving Tony Sarg's story-telling into many of our programs and offerings, and Sarg Community Day will be a great example of that for island and visiting families to enjoy. The essence of Tony Sarg is fun, and that is what this program and this recreated moment from the famous 1937 Nantucket sea serpent landing, will be all about,” says Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

Tony Sarg (1880-1942) is known as the father of modern puppetry in North America and the originator of the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade balloons. Sarg was an accomplished illustrator, animator, designer, and nimble entrepreneur who summered on and took inspiration from Nantucket for nearly twenty years. In the summer of 1937, Sarg orchestrated a hoax on Nantucket with his sea monster balloon. He planned various spottings around the island, including footprints on the beach and sightings of a creature in the water. A few days later, Sarg displayed his massive sea monster balloon, which he named “Morton,” on Francis Street Beach to wow locals and tourists, and it soon became known as the “event of the summer.”

To recreate this moment in Nantucket history, the NHA worked with Bill Smith of Smith Special Productions and Balloonworks. Smith has been designing parade balloons since 1987 for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and other parades around the country. Tony Sarg is one of his greatest inspirations, so much so that he contacted the NHA many years ago to express his desire to recreate one of

Booked Solid a Slate of Signings at Mitchell’s

This August, Mitchell's Book Corner at 54 Main Street is the place to be for book lovers and literary enthusiasts. This independent bookstore will be buzzing with excitement as it welcomes a stellar lineup of authors for book signings that promise to delight readers of all tastes. Whether you’re a fan of historical narratives, contemporary fiction, fascinating non-fiction, or engaging memoirs, there’s something for everyone’s reading list.

This Saturday, August 3, Nantucket resident and New York Times Best Selling Author Nathaniel Philbrick will meet readers and sign books at Mitchell’s from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Philbrick has written and edited more than a dozen books about Nantucket history, sailing, and American history. He was the founding director of Nantucket’s Egan Maritime Institute and is a research fellow at the Nantucket Historical Association. His books have won many distinguished awards (Mayflower was a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in History), and have inspired documentaries and films.

Philbrick conducts extensive research for each book, and his writing style is lively and engaging. Whether he’s recounting what really happened at the Little Bighorn, how George Washington led his troops to victory, or what it’s like to survive a months at sea after a shipwreck, his masterful storytelling heightens the drama, illuminates twists of fate, and brings to life the people who, for most of us, were just a few sentences in a history book.

“I’m trying to get you into the story in a way that you’re visualizing it,” Philbrick explained in a previous interview. “In my research process, I look for concrete details so that you’re emotionally experiencing it, not just intellectually. There must be an emotional content to identify, establishing a sense of what it was like to be alive then. All our lives have drama, and when I find an extraordinary situation, I try to make it human. Sometimes just one little detail will unlock a situation in a new way.”

This Wednesday morning, August 7, from 11 am to 12 noon, Mitchell’s Book Corner will host Elin Hilderbrand, author of more than 30 bestsellers set on Nancontinued on page 20

Strange Agent

It’s around 7:00 am on Friday morning, July 26, and I’m ankle deep in the beautiful water of Nantucket’s south shore. I hear an unusual sound over my left shoulder. I turn and see an oddly familiar object coming towards me, low and slow over the beach. I recognize that it’s the 11 million dollar helicopter that Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Moller uses to pop over here when he is forced to put on his oh so sorry face and address his victims—you know us: the people who live, work, visit, and cherish the island of Nantucket. It was as if Klaus (or Hans Gruber, as some of my buddies refer to him), was trying to figure out what those of us who love the Nantucket shoreline might be thinking of his problematic but highly profitable wind turbine scheme. Well, folks, don’t you worry, your buddy Stevie let Klaus know that he was still Number One in my book. Had I not been reeling in my lure, he would have got the message in stereo.

There were two reasons that had me out on the beach early that morning: First, as always, was to perhaps catch some fish. The second reason was to meet up with Nate Skerritt, one of my favorite Nantucket beach fishers, in his natural environment. One of the many things that I love about Nate is that he was as mad as I was that our shoreline had been so callously attacked by the so-called “green energy project.”

Nathan Skerritt is one of Nantucket’s best beach fishers. He’s also a category 5 fishing storm. Nate’s Instagram bio sums him up perfectly: “I am semi-controlled chaos. Sigmund Freud would have a field day with me. Fishing extremist.”

Yeah, Nathan, you had me at fishing extremist! I first became aware of this surfcasting maniac last year during the August Blues fishing tournament. A series of posts from some unknown madman with the Instagram handle “Strangeagent007” were constantly tagged on the August Blues page. I could see why. This mysterious Strange Agent was the epitome of the tournament’s spirit. His Instagram posts showed a fisher who has an absolute passion for getting on the beach and getting after those blues! The short videos that he posted were always entertaining, funny, and captivating. I immediately started following the Strangeagent007 and never looked back.

When I finally had the chance to meet up with Nate, I discovered that there’s so much more to this guy than the wild man who fishes like his hair is on fire. I learned that he’s a dedicated and hard-working manager who handles a ton of responsibilities continued on page 18

Living in the Moment

Chris Bartick describes the path he’s followed from art, graphic design, sailing, fashion, and back to art as a “wild and winding road...nomadic, yet rich in beauty and experience.”

Bartick has recently become the sole owner of the unique luxury brand Respoke upon the retirement of his co-founder Michael Tonello. The Respoke shop on Nantucket’s Straight Wharf has become well-known for its gorgeous oneof-a-kind handcrafted footwear, home decor, and apparel made with repurposed designer scarves such as Hermès, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.

Chris recently took some time to reflect back on his journey from being an “art kid” to a creative entrepreneur running an esteemed fashion company with multiple locations.

His artistic talent and long-time interest in painting led him to earn a BFA in Fine Art, with an emphasis on graphic design for practicality. “It’s difficult to have a career as a painter,” he explained. Right out of college, he was offered a job at Target in New York City, where he worked for two years before shifting to a job at a small design firm. “I was making money by being creative!”

With the boundless energy that keeps him going even today, while working as a graphic designer in New York, Bartick started a sailing charter business on the side that he ran after work and on weekends. “I grew up in a boating family: I had sailing in my blood,” he explained. “I offered lessons and charters in the Hudson River.” He and his business partner also chartered and sailed a 42-foot sailboat around New England.

Upon becoming a full-time freelance artist and designer in 2012, Bartick found the time to paint a series of 50 paintings called Moment of Sailing. Each canvas is

Island Date Night

He was the only man on Main Street wearing a tie. She straightened it.

The two of them were standing at the head of Main Street. The evening light was drifting down from the Pacific National Bank, through the elms, across the cobblestones, down to the Pacific Club and the masts of the sail boats tied up in the basin. The light caught him on the side of the head and left him confused.

She was many things, but not confused. Not really. She peered around, door to door, street to street, but she smiled. She touched him as if he was floating. Either he was going to keep her from slipping under water or he was going to drift away in the southwest breeze, but she made sure she kept contact. The hand, then a touch on the shoulder which slid down to the small of his back, just above his belt. If she needed to grab on, she knew where the handle was.

They were dressed up, in clothes they hadn’t worn often. They had not developed the practical habits of the costume and its demands. He had dress pants with a razor crease that ended above shoes that were too new to be comfortable. His shirt, similarly angular, betrayed the folds of the package it had been in. His tie, with the three island light houses against a deep blue background had only recently been hanging in Murray’s. He was sunburned, tussled, and just off of either a boat, a lifeguard stand, or a roof. His eyes kept looking.

For her part, she was just off a horse. Her hair cascaded off her shoulders into the middle of her back as if a reddish blond dam had broken. She moved foot to foot, shoulder to shoulder, with the functional balance of someone who was used to coaxing a large animal over a fence. She had brought a Laura Ashley dress for the evening, with a blue and white china pattern, a red ribbon that hid under the torrent of hair and a back that framed a galaxy of freckles crossed by a thick white stripe and one small tattoo of a horseshoe. Unfortunately, she was also wearing light blue shoes with about a two inch heel.

I was adored once, too, although I hadn’t had a date night like that since the

On the Island’s Heathlands & Barrens

This past week we wrapped up the Nantucket BioBlitz. When we were out and about trying to catalog every living thing on the island mid-July, we came across a plethora of caterpillars. As a plant ecologist, I’m usually more attuned to the flora rather than the fauna. However, when you get up close and personal with a plant, you have a front row seat to the faunal associates living off of, in, and around the plant.

This year, it was the caterpillar diversity that really struck me. During the two weeks in July of the BioBlitz, we had 74 species of lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is the name for an order of winged insects that includes butterflies and moths. You can check out the full list of observations during the BioBlitz by following the QR code.

There were, as expected, monarch butterflies, tiger moths (the adults of wooly bear caterpillars), and yellow swallowtails – the charismatic adults. The crescents were also popular at this time of year: Northern Crescent, Pearl Crescent, and the similarly colored Red Admirals, Painted Ladies, and American Coppers. All of these are various patterns of reddish orange, gray, and black on their wings.

And what’s so cool for Nantucket is that a lot of our Lepidoptera are protected within the state of Massachusetts. It’s our plant diversity and abundance of certain food and host plants that make us a

painted aboard boats in different locations with the completion location noted in latitude and longitude with the signature. During the process, he decided that when he purchased the boat of his dreams he would name it Moment. Just a year later, he accomplished that goal: “I found the boat in Annapolis, Maryland—it was a wreck, and I spent a year restoring it as I continued to work in graphic design.” Bartick explained that “taking the boat from something in great need and turning it into a wellrespected charter” prepared him for the many challenges of the business world. His successes “did not just happen... I’ve been under a boat covered in everything, with resin dripping on my face at 2 in the morning…I read, talked to people, learned to restore the boat—all while working in graphics to afford it...The challenges of MOMENT prepared me for the challenges of Respoke —it forced me to become nimble and learn to pivot to stay afloat and expand.”

“When the boat was finally ready, I thought I’d be based in New York. But after about a month, I left the city and sailed to Provincetown, where I started my charter business, Moment Sailing Adventures.” The Moment, a 1981 Stevens 47, is still running charters, though now Chris is only occasionally at the helm.

It was during his early days as a captain in Provincetown that he met Tonello. “He was the only person I knew who lived in town, I was living aboard the Moment, building the charter business and working in graphic design and branding remotely. Michael initially helped me promote the boat with some flyers and word of mouth. After a summer in Provincetown, he approached me with his idea that eventually became Respoke. “I was intrigued: I had been looking for an amazing product that I could market and grow while remaining remote and not having to report into a physical place... Little did I know!”

Bartick and Tonello worked together to find the mountain village workshops in Spain that could execute their ideas to incorporate scarves into quality footwear.

“Our first break was in Bergdorf Goodman in New York City: from there we launched into other high-end specialty boutiques,” Bartick explained. As it would turn out, storage was very necessary to house the product, as Respoke was expanding and Provincetown seemed like the most logical place. Bartick managed to find a storage space that also happened to be a front-facing retail space “as a test.” The showroom revealed just how essential a brick-and-mortar location was to growing the business—their clientele loved experiencing their Provincetown showroom, browsing through the one-of-a-kind shoes, and finding their fit and their favorites.

“After a really great first year (2018), that fall I sailed to Nantucket—because I love Nantucket—and it occurred to me that the island has a great summer vibe that could be perfect for Respoke. After looking at options and numbers,” Bartick explained, “the location on Straight Wharf was calling to us. We agreed to lease it, COVID hit, and we had to scramble and pivot.” To step on-island with some good will, they opted to donate the space to the Artists Association of Nantucket and a portion of web sales to Nantucket Community Sailing. They finally were able to open their Nantucket store in 2021, which resulted in a grand success.

Respoke now has four locations in addition to Respoke.com: seasonal shops on Nantucket, on Martha’s Vineyard, in Provincetown, and a year-round shop in Charleston. In the midst of opening their store in Provincetown, they started a new division, embellishing clothing. “That was the start of different pathways: we now do furniture, and I launched a collage series with remnant off-cuts of the shoe-making process and acrylic paint—keeping the theme of iconic designer scarves and celebrating iconic scenes in each of our locations,” said Bartick.

Just this month, Respoke has launched a new line of Sport Loafers. “We’ve been doing sneakers for years... these are more like a loafer, but sporty and non-marking for boat decks. They have a vulcanized sole and are lined in French terry with a removable insole... very comfy...most are white, some are black and all are constructed with designer scarves. We use as much natural and sustainable material as possible in all of our products.”

Bartick is always trying to refine his company and loves the concept of “art for your feet” and “fashion is art.” He’s been exploring new collaborations for Respoke, such as their recent Respoke X Imp of the Perverse jackets: “they’re in lilac and sapphire blue for men and women, and they’re insane!”

“It’s been a wild and winding road: I love the idea of beginning as a painter, becoming a graphic designer...restoring and living on a sailboat… and taking a product-driven company to the moon. The initial expectation was an online business, yet discovering the importance of client contact, which yielded four brick-and-mortar locations that conveniently now double as four galleries where I can show my work. It’s like a full circle… I found my way back and so much more.”

Respoke is open daily at 41 Straight Wharf and online at respoke.com

for Nantucket Island Resorts. He’s a loving husband who married a Nantucket girl and fell in love with her island, too. He’s a poet of sorts who posts eloquently about the things he cherishes: fishing, his wife, the Nantucket beaches. And finally there’s a man who has received a second chance in life, someone who is now proudly ten years clean from a heroin habit. Nate Skerritt is a huge success story, plain and simple.

“Eric, my best friend back home who I’ve known since kindergarten – once I got clean, he basically forced me to start hanging out with him again. Once he realized how wild I had become in my ‘adulthood,’ he would just laugh and shake his head and say, “You are one strange agent, bud!”

Nate’s story is typical, as we say in the recovery community. Just as my story is. Our drugs of choice were different. Alcohol was my downfall and, by the grace of God, I have been sober for many years. Thus, I understand Nate on a somewhat different level. I know where he’s been and greatly respect where he is now.

Nathan grew up in Kingston, MA. He lived there until his father sat him down one day and told Nate that it was time for him to leave. “Some law enforcement guys told my dad that either I left town or I was going to end up in prison for ten years. So my dad sent me to live with my uncle in Arkansas.” Nate entered a rehabilitation facility. He lasted for about six days. Nate was travelling down a rough road. “I was out of control, running through the woods of Arkansas, shooting squirrels and living on squirrel gumbo.”

But things changed for Nathan. The program of Narcotics Anonymous helped him to develop a firm foundation upon which to build a new life. He stayed clear of trouble. And he met Jodi.

“I met my wife at Eastbay Grill in Plymouth, near my hometown. She flew me to Nantucket for our first date. We swam with the phosphorescence. It was a total set-up! Jodi knew that I would end up moving here immediately. She saved my life. Fishing made it a little easier on her—she can only take so much of my high octane.”

Nate instinctively knew that he needed something to occupy his free time. Fishing was a perfect fit for him.

“I got into surfcasting on my own. I was big into pond fishing as a kid. I would pester all the fishing charter guys on Straight Wharf for fishing tips. For some reason Bob DeCosta took me under his wing like I was a lost baby tuna. I kept pestering him...wouldn’t let him walk away! I think he smelled the helplessness on me.”

Bobby DeCosta is a Nantucket native, and he grew up fishing off of the island beaches. Believe me when I tell you that if there was a Nantucket fishing university, Bobby would be a dean. I asked him about Nate in the early days.

“Nate is my favorite student ever. His attitude is so positive: he’s just so happy to be alive! Nate doesn’t care what kind of fish he’s catching, he just wants to catch them. I remember thinking, ‘hey, check out this guy with all the tattoos. But he was positive, and he wanted to learn so badly. I don’t think that Nate misses a single morning during fishing season. He goes out before work, and he loves every cast. It really helps him out with the stresses of his job.”

Nathan asked for one consideration when I spoke with him for this article. “Please dedicate it to my friend Ryan Benjamin Nicotri – July 24, 1985 to November 21, 2011. He would’ve been the best man at my wedding. And I would have been the godfather to his kids. But unfortunately he was chosen to be the angel on my right shoulder.” Wow. I hope that everyone reading this has a friend who loves you as much as Nate loves Ryan.

So what makes Nathan such a great fisher? First and foremost, he has that burning passion I see in the greatest fishers that I know. Tammy King, James Hatton, Denny Dias, Rafael Osona, Greg Chotkowski, Noah Karberg, Dan Holmes, just to name a few: they live to fish. That’s why they’re some of the best out there on the beach. Next is the energy level to keep fishing when others would just give up from exhaustion. Add in the ability to recognize what’s happening up and down the beach—the skill to see a subtle change in the conditions, the bait pattern, or any of the endless fishing variables. Nate reacts quickly to these clues, something that he does better than almost anyone. Nate is very dialed in.

Nate is very excited about the August Blues tournament. When he heard that the first prize for the biggest bluefish is an autographed New England Patriots jersey from the awesome Tedy Bruschi, Nate immediately posted, “I will fight tooth and nail for this! Tooth and nail!” And I don’t doubt it one bit.

Nate has some advice for anyone out there struggling: “A cliché, but don’t ever give up. It’s ok if you keep tripping and falling. Tie your bootstraps. Ice up. And give it another go.”

That’s pretty fantastic advice, folks. Follow Nate on Instagram and watch your days get brighter. Get out there and fish hard. And don’t ever give up.

Steve “Tuna” Tornovish is a Nantucket native who has spent his life fishing from the beaches of his beloved island. He loves to introduce clients to the joy of fishing with his Nantucket Island Fishing Adventures: stevetuna.com

In addition to Sandwich, Newman is the author of how-to books for kids, memoirs, and two other novels. Warm and relatable, Newman describes herself as an author who has “written about kids, parents, teenagers, food, cooking, love, loss, gender, eating, death, sex, politics, books, babies, snakes, foraging, relationships, crafts, holidays, travel, and fortune telling for lots of magazines, newspapers, and online publications, including the New York Times, O the Oprah Magazine, The Boston Globe, Romper, Self, The Huffington Post, FamilyFun, Parents, and Full Grown People

In the evening from 5 to 6 pm that same day, Wednesday, August 7, the public is invited to join the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and Tim from Tim Talks Books when they host a book signing at Mitchell’s Book Corner with award-winning author Sy Montgomery and naturalist illustrator Matt Patterson.

Montgomery has written 34 non-fiction books about our natural world for adults and children, has worked with National Geographic TV, and speaks frequently at schools, libraries, museums, and universities. She travels widely, and her intrepid in-person research has resulted in many exciting and perilous situations—she’s been described in The Boston Globe as “part Indiana Jones and part Emily Dickinson.” Her astonishing book The Soul of an Octopus was Nantucket’s selection for One Book, One Island 2023.

Montgomery will be accompanied at this signing by talented naturalist artist Matt Patterson, who illustrated Sy Montgomery’s Of Time and Turtles and many other books. Both Montgomery and Patterson are featured speakers at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation’s annual meeting on August 8 at 5 pm in the Great Harbor Yacht Club.

Upcoming book signings at Mitchell’s Book Corner at 54 Main Street will feature several authors a week, including: Anita McBride on August 8 from 10:30 am to 12 noon; Hank Phillippi Ryan on August 9 from 10:30 am to 12 noon; Nancy Thayer and Brooke Lea Foster on August 11 from 10:30 am to 12 noon; Griffen Dunne on August 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 am; Debi Lily on August 17 from 10:30 am to 12 noon; and Neil King, Jr. on August 18 from 10:30 am to 12 noon.

hot spot for lepidoptera diversity. It’s the low growing shrubs of the heathlands and scrub oak barrens that are true hotspots of moth and butterfly diversity.

Research from the early 2000s by lepidopterists Mark Mellow and (independently) Dave Wagner found that 56 species of conservation concern representing 11 families of Lepidoptera are recognized as dependent on shrubland habitats in the New England region, including 41% of state-listed moths and butterflies in Massachusetts. Twenty-nine percent of these species utilize scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia) as a larval host and 14% use lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium and V. pallidum), both common on Nantucket. In addition to Lepidoptera, a wide diversity of other invertebrates is dependent on pine barrens and other shrublands. The importance of these habitats results from unique soil conditions and temperature regimes, as well as the structure, species composition, and phenology of the plant community.

According to the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, Sandplain Heathlands are habitat for “multiple uncommon plants in Massachusetts, including sandplain flax, sandplain blue-eyed grass, eastern silvery aster, purple cudweed, butterfly weed, and broom crowberry. They are part of a structural and successional continuum with other coastal communities.” They are disturbance-dependent communities occurring on sandy and gravelly outwash plain and moraines near the coast.

The pitch-pine scrub oak barrens are an open shrubland plant community that occurs on outwash sandplains. These communities are not floristically very diverse. However, pitch pine/scrub oak barrens have a rich, specialized lepidopteran fauna. A large number of rare species of moths, particularly pitch pine and scrub oak feeders, have a strong affinity for the community type.

More than 60% of the rare moth fauna listed in the Massachusetts Endangered Species Protection Act are found primarily in scrub oak barrens, coastal heathlands, or sandplain grassland, all early successional habitats found on Nantucket. And 44% are restricted to native heathland or shrubland (including scrub oak barrens) habitat as described by Wagner et al (2003)— this number represents only a fraction of the 56 species of “Conservation Concern” they list as uncom-

Heathlands & Barrens

mon shrubland/heathland specialists.

I took a walk the other day to the Sesachacha Heathland property owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The low growing heathland and scrub-shrub plant community had been historically maintained via prescribed fire and mowing, but not in recent years. And while adult butterflies and moths are cool, I really love the quirky shapes, sizes, textures, and colors of our caterpillars. Even in the short period of time of my walk, I found close to a hundred chain-dot geometers and five separate buck moth caterpillars cruising along the sandy trails.

Barren’s Buck Moth (Hemileuca maia) is a scrub-oak loving species and is a state-listed species of special concern. The small, black spikey caterpillars then become mottled black and white caterpillars with yellowish spikes and red heads. In either form, their spines pack a venomous punch, so refrain from touching them. In late September/October, the adult moths emerge with gorgeous black and white wings and colorful, fuzzy blackand-white-striped bodies with orange accents—perfect for Halloween time! The yellow inchworm of the Chain Dot Geometer (Cingilia cate) is also a species of special concern in Massachusetts, primarily due to habitat loss and fire suppression. As an adult they have white wings with “chains” (lines) of black dots, hence the name. This time of year, though, they are the small yellow inchworm-like creatures with black stripes frequenting the heathland plant communities. We found many hundreds hanging around (literally) in the middle moors in a mowed scrub oak barren readying to cocoon.

The caterpillar of the Hickory Tussock moth (Lophocampa caryae) is com-

pletely covered in long, white, hairlike setae arranged in spreading tufts. Additional tufts of black with some longer hair clusters give this caterpillar a rock star appearance. These hairs cause itchy rashes in many people, particularly those prone to allergies, and may resemble exposure to urushiol, the chemical cause of poison ivy rash. While Hickory Tussock moths feed on nut trees, despite the name, they aren’t too picky. They are visible now on Nantucket, but will soon be tucked away in webs to pupate on their way to emerging as moths next spring. We found many of varying sizes in late July in the wooded areas of the Middle Moors and along the south coast at Smooth Hummocks.

This next caterpillar can be seen right now in its first instar stage. The puss or flannel moth, (Megalopyge crispata) looks cute and fuzzy, but DO NOT TOUCH! This little one has the distinction of being one of the most toxic caterpillars in North America. Closely resembling the cute backside of a rabbit, under the soft, white fuzz, this deadly creature has hollow poison-filled stinging spines that can act like tiny poison darts. While they won’t kill you, they pack a punch. I had to go to the emergency room when I accidentally squashed one into the palm of my hand. The swelling moving up my arm was concerning, but nothing that a few Benadryl couldn’t handle. So, look, but don’t touch this dangerous beauty.

Many of the species of interest that we’ve been finding are found in our heathland and scrub oak barren communities. Yet one more reason (besides all the amazing plants) to protect and manage these habitats. Keep that in mind next time you frequent one of the many conservation trails on-island.

If you’d like to know more about the caterpillars, their favorite host plants, and what time of year to expect them, check out Caterpillars of Eastern North America: A Guide to Identification and Natural History by David Wagner. This field guide with beautiful photographs categorizes around 700 species. My favorite part is that you can also look caterpillars up by host plant, narrowing the search.

Island Date Night

Reagan administration. I was in jeans, a Whaler’s cap, and a “Carpe Diem” shirt that some yachtie had given to the Thrift Shop and then, by extension and five dollars, to me. However, I was sitting on the Town Fathers bench at the head of Main Street and felt that, by reason of location, I was a A Lord of the Island and was entitled to dispense advice. I stood and tapped him on the shoulder.

“Where are you headed?” I asked.

“We’re waiting for a cab.”

“To where?” I gave him my best grandpa smile.

“The Club Car.”

I pointed to the bottom of Main Street. “You could just walk.”

He looked at her, she looked back at him and shrugged. After a quick thank you, she took off her shoes, hung them from one hand, held him with the other, and they crossed the street together.

In the confusion of August, when the traffic is at its peak, rudeness rides an incoming tide, and the ocean holds seals, sharks, and fiberglass, we forget what this island can be.

For our new visitors, like the couple, Nantucket emerges on the ferry ride as a miracle embraced by the ocean. They see things that have long since dropped into invisibility for islanders: the cobblestones, the bricks, and the ocean that lurks in the silence. Let them get away from town and they will meet the moors, the hundred miles of beach, and at least one beer garden. If all goes well on the weekend, they will leave sunburned and happy. His tie will become a souvenir and her dress will have a memory (and

a stain, perhaps) sunk into it. They will put their picture on their lock screen, show all of their friends at work, and remember this dinner until the grandchildren knock on the door. This day, and this evening, will go on a short list of the best days of their lives.

For me, it is a Thursday. It’s a day when I got stuck on Old South Road twice and Nobadeer Farm Road once as I was trying to turn over a client’s rental and fix a leaky toilet. It’s a day when I couldn’t find parking at the market, couldn’t find the right milk, and couldn’t pick up the meatball sub I ordered. It was a day of enduring conspiracies in the town building, incompetence at the wind farm, and high handed privilege everywhere. All of these annoyances rise up and blind us to the other island that lives in postcards, Instagram feeds, and the eyes of the visitors. At the end of another Thursday, I fell into a chair (from the Take It or Leave It) and switched on the Olympics.

Like the young couple, almost everyone on all of their Olympic boats was having one of the best rainy days of their lives. They may get married, they may have children, they may get elected President, but this day will stand alone. And when the time comes, again and again and again, they will pull out the shirt, spread it out on the bedspread, and say, I am an Olympian.

Win, lose, or DQ, this fortnight makes a hinge moment in the athletes’ lives: they will mark it with a tattoo. In Paris, everything that happened before will meet everything that happens afterwards. So it will be for our young couple. While there may be no Olympic performance, they will leave the moors, the beaches, and the cobblestones transformed. She may dump him, move to Switzerland, and take up teaching skiing, but this weekend will remain. If once you have slept on an island, you will never be quite the same.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

In accordance with this long-standing tradition, the Geschke Lecture Series was created as a result of a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge grant awarded to the Atheneum in 2003, a significant donation from the Geschke Foundation, and the ongoing support of many library donors.
