Bringing Art to Us All
September 3-16, 2020

At 10 am on Friday, September 4, the doors of the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street will open to welcome visitors to the Artists Association of Nantucket’s 2020 10 x 10 Exhibition. The show will remain on display through Saturday, September 19. With 2020 marking AAN’s 75th Anniversary year, this very popular 10 x 10 Exhibition is celebrating its 16th year and has become a beloved AAN tradition. It is always a fascinating show and an exciting opportunity to see the many different ways an artist approaches a 10 inch by 10 inch canvas. This year, due to the world-wide pandemic, the Artists Association is adhering to best safety practices and has only opened the first floor of the gallery. Visitors must wear face-coverings and only four people may be inside at one time. The 10 x 10 Exhibition in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery is open Tuesday–Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, closed 2 to 2:30 pm. AAN is also hosting an online exhibition of the same name, which can be found at Nantucketarts.org at the “Buy Art” link beginning September 11 and continuing through October 2. In addition to the gallery exhibit, the AAN has collaborated with five downtown businesses, who are displaying art panels showcasing artwork for sale by local artist members. In celebration of the AAN’s 75th anniversary year, these panels honor the legacy of the Artists Association and its talented local artists. Known as Main Street Live, the art panel idea was conceived by AAN board member, artist, and exhibition committee chair Robert Miklos. Because 2020 marks a special year for the organization, Miklos was looking for a way to garner more exposure for the AAN and thus the Main Street Live panel idea. “I was thrilled by the enthusiasm and cooperation expressed by Nantucket merchants for our Main St. Gallery project. This collaboration demonstrates their understanding and appreciation of the impact the arts has on our community for both visitors and residents," said Miklos. “Bob developed this concept of building art walls that could display works by our members, and we are delighted with the outcome,” said Robert Frazier, AAN’s Artistic Director. “We are indebted to Bob and the businesses that were willing to display a panel in their front windows for this special art installation, and AAN is so appreciative of their continued support during this critical time,” he added. The businesses displaying panels are Hingham Savings, 35 Main St.; William Raveis Real Estate, 17 Main St.; RogersGray, 53 Main St.; and Murray’s Toggery Shop, 62 Main Street. To learn more about the AAN and their many programs, call 508-228-0722 or visit Nantucketarts.org.

Down the shell-lined walkway of Old South Wharf, just beyond the sushi restaurant is a shop filled with art and apparel and gifts by island artisans aptly called Made On Nantucket. Nantucket artist and shop owner Kathleen A. Duncombe has been part of the Nantucket art scene—creating, teaching, mentoring—for decades. We found Duncombe recently at a table outside her shop under a bright orange umbrella, working on her lastest artistic endeavor: “CAJ” repurposed jeans, skirts, shorts, and jean jackets beautifully embellished with bright embroidery thread, colorful and shimmering beads, and carefully placed distress marks. When we talk about climate change on Nantucket, the conversation often revolves around rising sea levels, erosion, increased storms, and storm surge. Lately, though, we have been seeing another effect of climate change in the form of warming ocean waters. It may seem like a benefit to vacationers and beachgoers. Warming seas may mean more pleasant swimming temperatures earlier and later in the season. But there are some serious secondary consequences to warming waters. In the last 100 years, average ocean surface temperatures have risen by about 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As greenhouse gases trap heat on the planet, oceans heat up — they absorb 93% of that excess heat. NASA’s Earth Observatory reports that the Gulf of Maine, which stretches from Cape Cod to Canada, is warming at an average rate of 0.11 degrees Fahrenheit each year, an increase that is three times faster than the global average. These warming waters can have ecological consequences for the creatures that live in the ocean. Just like birds migrate to seek food and warmer air temperatures, fish and other sea creatures migrate with ocean currents to look for food and habitable water temperatures. Last year was the hottest on record for the oceans. According to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, temperatures off the Northeast coast are now 5.4 to 7.2 degrees above normal. Not surprisingly, ocean animal and plant species do best within a relatively narrow range of temperatures. Any changes to those temperatures can result in catastrophic shifts within any one of a number of delicately balanced ecosystems. Although you may not have noticed the warmer water, especially when you jump in to take a cook dip on a hot day, you may have noticed the increase in jelly fish this year. This is just one example of shifting species. The last two weeks of August, beaches all across the island posted warnings for increased sighting of stinging jellyfish. Lifeguards, the hospital, and others have all noted increases in jellyfish stings needing treatment. Nantucket is no stranger to jellyfish who generally show up towards the end of summer or early September when ocean waters are at the warmest. However, increases in temperature have meant an earlier arrival of jellyfish to Nantucket. Unlike many marine species, jellies can thrive in warmer water with less oxygen and so are showing up in larger numbers as ocean temperatures rise. Arriving earlier means they are arriving at a time of summer when there are more people at the beach to notice them. Atlantic sea nettles are the species of jellyfish that more people have been seeing and which pack a stinging punch. The sea nettles and the lion’s mane jellies are responsible for the majority of stings that have been treated by Nantucket lifeguards in the last month. Moon jellies and comb jellies have also been spotted around the island, but they are harmless to humans. continued on page 11

by Robert P. Barsanti They walk by each night at six thirty. He wears a UConn sweatshirt, a Bill Fischer Tackle hat, and lists to starboard at each step. She sports movie star sunglasses and pink sneakers. They trudge by, smile, wave, and keep going. My Boon Companion has stopped giving them warning barks and now wags. As the season ebbs, they pass by in a golden hour. Since March, they walk by the house every day in the evening. Over the season, their clothes have changed slightly, and they have gotten somewhat more mobile, but they remain constant. Not fast, not graceful, but one foot in front of the other. Every day. I suspect their habit grew out of some physical therapy treatment. Perhaps it was a knee or an ankle or a hip that sent them spinning out of the everyday world and into the world of habits, routines, and workouts. None of their steps look easy or painless. They are my neighbors, surely. Not visitors, not residents, but neighbors. I look forward to seeing them mark the day with their slow steps. Through most of the summer, my street hosts a series of visitors. They appreciate the island with fresh eyes, breathe in the Atlantic air, and listen for the breaking waves. Their week on-island has been circled in pink on the calendar. Now here, they grab each moment, press it into the dictionary, and keep it for the winter. We are anecdotes for the Thanksgiving table, laughs for the family, and lock screens for their phones. Other houses hold residents. They come to the island, pay their taxes and membership dues, then sit by the pool and watch the clouds blow by overhead. Their cars unload late at night and, a week later, leave early in the morning. The houses, hidden by hedges and blocked by Range Rovers, light up in the August evening, then fade to black. But the walking couple were neighbors, though I did not know where they lived or what their names were. But I cared about them and would care for them, should they need it. They waved each day and smiled at my wagging Boon Companion and kept on their way. Our interactions weren’t great. I didn’t buy girl scout cookies from them, nor did I put a new roof on their house; and they didn’t offer me a firm handshake and pat on the shoulder (which, in a plague year, they couldn’t). But we shared an unspoken fellow feeling. At our best, on this island, we are neighbors. The whaling houses in town are flush to the street so they could be a part of the street. Those who walked, rode, or drove by participated in their lives, whether it be from bickering or backfiring. At night, as you pass the windows, They would be at dinner, or reading, or watching the Red Sox blunder another loss on their 60 inch plasma screen. At our worst, we are judgmental, gossipy voyeurs who can’t keep their eyes or opinions out of other people’s business. But, I suppose, gossip is its own form of love. It places you in the constellation of our stars, spinning through our lives. Hate thrives in the ignorant darkness, unnoticed behind a hedge. My parents visited their neighbors almost every night; someone would make coffee, a cranberry tea loaf would appear and they would spend hours across the street. Or the neighbors spent hours at our house and ate Oreos. We spent afternoons, summers, and snowstorms at each others houses. Somehow, that slipped away. continued on page 24

We are also seeing more frequent sightings of Portuguese Man o’ War, a far more potent species of jellyfish generally found in large numbers further south. We usually have reports of a few each year, but last week there were 10 in one day! Not only are their stings painful, but they can leave welt-like red marks on the skin. And it’s not just stinging jellyfish. We are also seeing some unusual species of fish show up that have either never been seen here before or are very rare visitors. In early July, a vacationer fishing from shore near Eel Point hooked a houndfish, a warm-water species
that may never have been caught before along the Massachusetts shore and was definitely a first for Nantucket. The houndfish was a skinny, 4-foot-long fish with a needlelike mouth and menacing teeth. While this could be just an unfamiliar fish way off course, it is one of a slew of unusual fish reports from the shores of New England in recent years. Another new visitor to our area has gotten a lot of people talking. There have been multiple hammerhead shark sightings this year, with some relatively close to shore. Eric Savetsky, of the Nantucket Land Bank, photographed a scalloped hammerhead about 80 miles south of the island in July. In late August, a fisherman saw a hammerhead in shallow waters of the Monomoy tip on the Cape. Hammerheads, of which there are many species, are

more typically found in warmer, tropical-like waters. With the gulf stream extending further north, hammerheads are being seen more frequently along the coast where, previously, it would have been too cold. These additional wildlife sightings may be exciting for islanders and visitors. It’s always interesting to see something new and to add to the Nantucket biodiversity. But there is another consequence to warming waters. Some species that are typically found around Nantucket may be moving further north to escape higher than normal ocean temperatures. We’ve seen this as lobster populations move further north, for example. Anglers have been noticing changes to ocean life for some time. It might not just be new species, but also changes to the timing of arrivals such as bonito and false albacore, striped bass, and bluefish—their activity is primarily temperature dependent. As the waters warm earlier, the fishing changes as well. These warm ocean temperatures are not only drawing in unusual sea creatures and changing fishing seasons, but also helping to fuel a busy hurricane season. Tropical storms and hurricanes derive their energy from warm ocean waters. An ocean with warm water extending through the water column can increase the odds for storms to rapidly intensify. So, what are we to do? Changes to the ocean seem beyond our control, but as most of the changes we are seeing are a direct result of human activity, and are often made worse by human activity, we do have the power to limit the effects of climate change. September is Climate Change Awareness Month and there are many chances to learn about what we, as a community, can do. For more resources, visit acklimate.org. Rather than becoming complacent, these changes to our environment should instead bring us to action. We should be moved from discussion to action at the local, state, national, and international levels. The ramifications of climate change are real and they are here on Nantucket. Learn more about what your community is doing to address climate change and be part of the resilient solutions.

comparable jewelry designs that are unlike anything else you’ll see on the island are Simantov’s playful and fun shell jewelry. Modeled after the mussel, clams, scallop, and whelk shells found on so many of our beaches, these shimmering shells go easily from day to night. 14 Easy Street. rsimantov.com. ACK 4170TM is filled with gifts for every taste. Our fall favorite is their new teak charcuterie boards with the island carved into one end. It’s ideal for fall and holiday entertaining, and makes a great gift for anyone who loves Nantucket. You’ll find ACK 4170TM where Easy Street meets Old North Wharf and online at ack4170.com. At the base of Main Street, it’s hard to miss the shop with a ship model hanging above the sign. This shop has a great selection of island gifts, but we’d send you in to Blue Beetle at 12 Main Street for one of their soft and cuddly Nantucket cashmere sweaters to keep you cozy this fall and winter. Their island gifts can also be found online at bluebeetlenantucket.com. Along Old South Wharf, there are four shops you shouldn’t miss. Stroll up this wharf, and along the left side you’ll find The Love Shack by LOLA. In this small shop are handcrafted pendants, charms, bracelets, rings, cufflinks, and other jewelry designed to commemorate important moments in your life. It’s the perfect memento for your island visit. lolacompany.com continued on page 19
SAFE CARE Safe Summer
Nantucket Cottage Hospital is making the medical care you need this summer accessible, convenient, and most of all, safe by implementing the following plan for non-emergency care. Our foremost priority is the health and safety of our patients, so these initiatives will allow us to reduce the potential for transmission of the coronavirus within our facility and provide you with excellent care, safely.
Same-Day Appointments: Patients with common conditions and ailments that are non-life-threatening should call 508-825-1000 to schedule a same-day medical appointment. Staff will determine whether patients should be seen through a virtual visit or whether an in-person appointment is necessar y. To To keep patients and staff safe by reducing the number of individuals in our waiting area, NCH is not offering the walk-in care ser vice this summerr.. Please do not arrive without calling ahead for a same-day appointment. Patients with same-day appointments will be seen at the physicians practice inside the main hospital, not at the Anderson Building. The entrance to the physicians practice is now open.

Close contacts of patients with COVID-19 without symptoms also meet criteria to be tested. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, please come to drive-thru evaluation and testing site at the hospital’s main entrance portico. There is no need to call ahead, and the costs of testing for symptomatic patients and close contacts are completely covered whether patients have insurance or not.
Hours of operation for COVID-19 testing: • Monday – Friday: 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket A little farther down, across from Slip 14 at 13 Old South Wharf, Ireland Galleries offers everything from apparel and handbags to paintings and art by owner Lorene Ireland. Our pick in this shop is one of Ireland’s amazing mosaics made from shells, glass, and porcelain. We love her summery framed mosaics to adorn a wall, but she also makes sculptures and boxes to hold your treasures. Cross the shell pathway to Icarus + Company, a jewelry studio and shop on Old South Wharf where you’ll find the makers hard at work creating exquisite jewelry that emulates the beauty of the natural world around us. Our favorite this season are their Nantucket Moon Snail Drop Earrings, available in sterling silver or brass. One shop down at #20 is Made on Nantucket, the only place on Nantucket where you can find a framed miniature seriograph by famed island artist Donn Russell. Owner Kathleen Duncombe has a selection of Russell’s superb prints in other sizes, but we are particularly fond of the miniatures—buy several to make a beautiful grouping of your island memories. Heading back downtown, take a few steps off Main Street to 2 Union Street where up the stairs you’ll find the Gray Lady Smoke Shop. In addition to a great se-
Vol. 50 No. 10 • YesterdaysIsland.com lection of fine cigars, smoking accessories, and glassware, they also carry a small selection of locally-made gifts. We love the pottery made by islander Katy DeHeart. Follow them on Instagram @ackgraylady ackgraylady.com In the heart of Nantucket, at 21 Centre Street, you’ll find Jeweler’s Gallery which has been a favorite of island shoppers since 1971. Our pick among the gorgeous estate jewelry and new pieces are owner Jim O’Leary’s golden Sailors’ Valentines. These beautifully crafted gold pendants, some studded with rubies, diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires, harken back to the days when Nantucket sailors were gone for years and would return home to wives and loved ones with sailors valentines lovingly made from shells. These and Jim’s other nautical and Nantucket jewelry designs are also available at thejewelersgallery.com. If you’re shopping for someone with four legs instead of two, stop by Cold Noses, newly relocated to 48 Centre Street. They have a fun selection of collars and leashes with Nantucket motifs: lobsters, lighthouses, shells, whales, and more. Sizes start at XS and go all the way up to XXL. geronimos.com You have two chances to select an autographed book by an island author: Mitchell’s Book Corner that has anchored downtown for generations at 54 Main Street and at Nantucket Bookworks at 25 Broad Street. Both locations are dedicated to readers, and they are happy to make recommendations. Our staff could not just pick one, so we break our own rule by suggesting two choices: Summer of ‘69 by island author Elin Hilderbrand and A Thousand Leagues of Blue by Nantucket writer Betsy Tyler. We’re betting that either one you choose, you won’t be able to resist starting to read it during the ferry ride back to America.

tion is ever-changing. Currently she has white, dark wash, and light wash, and a few children’s sizes along with adult sizes. Her CAJs pair wonderfully well with Duncombe’s Neck Candy scarves. “I mix different yarns to get the effect: it’s all about the texture and the color.” Soft and bright, the scarves are onesize-fits-all. A twist in the design allows you to pull the scarf over your head as a hood when the weather turns chilly. In addition to her CAJ designs and her Neck Candy, Made On Nantucket is the downtown retailer for shawls and heirloom weaving by islander Karin Sheppard. Kathleen also sells beautiful bangles, rings, and earrings that she made in sterling silver and gold using the lost-wax casting method, and she has a stunning collection of Bakelite jewelry, barware, and kitchenware—some extraordinary and rare that collectors love. Featured Restaurant: Dune
Dune It Right by C.Oscar Olson
There is no arguing the fact that this has been the most challenging summer in memory for island businesses, and harder still for for our many marvelous restaurants. From forced closures to takeout-only to better weather and expanded outdoor seating, it has been a roller coaster to say the least. By meeting the innumerable challenges head-on with constant adjustments and adaptations, Dune has never missed a beat. Located in the heart of town on Broad Street, Dune is always fun, friendly, and fresh. Three distinct dining rooms offer feelings of relaxed sophistication, with loads of light when the sun is still shining or comfortably lit lounging while dining after dark. The restaurant is complete with a breezy patio area just outside, perfect for food and drink no matter the weather. And, new this season, are tables just outside on the sidewalk. We not only enjoyed our meal from here, but also took in some of the best people-watching Nantucket has to offer. With more than 20 years of industry experience under his belt, Chef Michael Getter knows how to work every angle of the restaurant. A graduate of Culinary Institute of America, he has catered for thousands in Nantucket Grey Lady Oysters a sitting and at just 21 years of age was put in charge as executive chef of the island hotspot 21 Federal. From there he took on the role of chef/owner at the acclaimed American Seasons, received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for his talents as a Sommelier, and worked briefly as executive chef of MAX Ultimate Foods, one of Boston’s premier catering companies. His cuisine has been praised in Bon Appetit and Gourmet. Chef Getter has assembled a crack team for Dune: Chef de Cuisine Joseph Ranstatler, Sous Chef Andres Titus, and Cocktail Master Joshua Loughlin. At Dune, ultra-fresh and hyperlocal ingredients combine with expert technique to allow the quality of every dish to shine as bright as can be. This was evident in every dish we had, but Smoked Halibut Pate
especially so in our starters. Four sparklingly fresh and perfectly plump Nantucket Grey Lady Oysters on the Half Shell come embellished with a vibrant rhubarb mignonette, cool and crisp diced cucumbers, and shallots. Pink peppercorns add a crunch of sweet spice to every morsel. One of the evening’s specials, a Smoked Halibut Pate, showcased the clean, tender, flaky fish with wisps of light smoke. Tangy capers and pea shoots provided crisp contrast to every bite, and it was served alongside a healthy handful of razor thin house made potato chips. A tableside pour of Summer Corn Bisque is silky and sweet with a savory, Latin-inspired spice. Chunks of tender Maine crab mingle throughout with crisp grilled corn, cilantro, and lime crema for a boost of acidity. For a heartier starter, we went with the multi-dimensional Sweet Soy Glazed Pork Belly. Spicy house-made kimchi cuts through the crisp, luscious richness of the pork, while toasty cashews provide a buttery crunch. Drizzles of carrot gel add a bright and tangy touch, and each bite could be made unique by adding and subtracting the different components. The vegetarian option, a Farm Zucchini Risotto, was our favorite first of the evening. The depth of flavor that infuses the rice comes from truffled mascarpone, preserved lemon, and parmesan broth that combine to create a beautiful backdrop to the pureed and fresh paper-thin rings of squash atop it all. Toasted hazelnuts add texture to this light but fantastically flavorful option. If good help is hard to find, then it might be because Chef Michael Getter has found all the good help. No matter when we go or what we order at Dune, no matter who seats us or serves Farm Zucchini Risotto us at this restaurant, the quality is never in question. Our waitress, Martha, was as professional, clear, and confident as can be. Every question was answered without pause, and not a single detail was overlooked. We thought it best to cleanse our pallets between courses, and a couple craft cocktails really did the trick (cover photo). All of mixologist Josh’s drinks are dynamic, complex, original, and not to be missed. Truly a scientist, he has an uncanny ability to combine unexpected ingredients and create something altogether surprising. The Smoke Signal gets its name from slightly smoky Del Maguey mezcal and heavily peated Laphroaig Scotch. The two spirits mingle in El Jimador

lemon and a dash of pithy orange bitters. Dune not only boasts a fine-tuned and lengthy wine list tailor-made for menu pairing, but also select beer, mocktails, and a full bar selection. There are so many options to easily enhance your meal. Every dish served at Dune is a work of art. It is the food that dictates the design, and each one is a symphony for the senses. It is impossible not to take a moment to exhale, admire the presentation, and breathe in the aromas offered up. Our entrees began arriving a few moments into our drinks, and each one was an absolute showstopper. Slightly seared edges of thick-cut Grilled Yellowfin Tuna (cover photo) surround the deep, ruby-red flesh of the fish. Still cool within, it’s served atop chilled toothsome soba noodles laced with a mango vegetable salad. The broth under it all is begging to be mopped up, with delicate flavors of sesame, lime, cucumber, and ginger combining to create something completely new. Unbelievably moist Grilled Atlantic Swordfish (cover photo) is summer love on a plate with a Greek salad of cucumber, tomatoes, olives, and chickpeas over a smear of whipped feta. The saltiness of the cheese brings out the sweetness of cubed, juicy watermelon served alongside and fresh oregano and mint add an aromatic and herby edge. It’s hard to go wrong with a steak, and it’s harder yet with an aged steak prepared just right from Dune. The Grilled Prime Angus Beef Sirloin is served sliced and was cooked exactly as we ordered it: a perfect medium rare. Al dente French lentils, sweet and succulent grilled peaches, red onion jam, and blue cheese butter ensure every bite is as delectable as the first. The PanSeared Wester Ross Salmon has one of the most perfect flakes we’ve laid eyes on. It’s served medium rare, and you wouldn’t want it any other way: tender and juicy alongside a piping of refried beans Pan-Seared Wester Ross Salmon

and tomato orange salsa, mild shishito peppers, and chayote squash with red onion, cotija cheese, a dash of chili aioli, finished with a lively sprinkle of citrus powder. Our all around favorite main course was the Pan-Roasted Jumbo Sea Scallops. Sweet, smoky, crunchy, and creamy all at once, the dish is brought toGrilled Prime Angus Beef Sirloin gether with sweet grilled corn, earthy parsnip puree, tender flageolet beans, spicy and savory poblano peppers, a salty crisp from prosciutto chips, smoked mushrooms, and a divine douse of rich lobster broth. Dessert is usually far from my favorite course, but it is essential to save room for it at Dune. The Pot de Creme is borderline sinful in its dark, dense, silkiness. It’s topped with a dollop of otherworldly whipped cream and a salty sweet chocolate peanut crumble. Pair it with a cup of coffee for a grand finale. A balancing act to our first sweet finish, the flavorful Lemon Olive Oil Cake is only slightly sweet, moist, and light as a feather. It comes paired with a peach compote that retains its texture, whipped mascarpone, and butPan-Roasted Jumbo Sea Scallops tery candied walnuts. Fine dining may seem like an adventure to some and others may be intimidated by high caliber and quality of food and flavor. At Dune Chef Getter’s haute cuisine is accessible to all: from the timid to the jaded, dining at Dune is an experience one mustn’t miss!

Ebb Tide of Summer from page 7
In this plague year, neighborliness operates like gravity; at a distance. No more high fives, no more down lows, no more too slows. We wear our masks, keep six feet apart, and wave. Strange, yet each one of those shows care, while an embrace con brio has become a threat and an assault. We care enough to keep away. It is Fire Chief Bruce Watt’s world, we are only passing through. The former Fire Chief is known for waving at absolutely every familiar face that passed before him on the roads. He would lift two fingers off the steering wheel in acknowledgment, and then, perhaps, he would nod his head. I suspect that, if pressed, he couldn’t name half of the people he waved at, but he recognized them, saluted them, and passed on. “You’re one of us” and, in receiving the wave and nod, you belonged; you were among neighbors. So I hope it is with our evening pedestrians. They pass by in the cool of the evening, step by step, accepting of a wave and a wag. They don’t stop, they don’t turn back, they keep moving through the September light. The summer ebbs. The blue sky has burned through the low lying fog and humidity and revealed the island as we remember it. The surf has built up, the hydrangea swing in a breeze and the mildew hasn’t regrown in the closet (yet). Off shore, the tuna and the whales remain. March returns. It comes to my house, every night at around 3 in the morning. Orion and the winter constellations spin back into the sky, along with all of the old friends: their bills, the President, and the virus. The Days of March scroll by, one after the other, into an unremitting gray ceiling. I knew March would return, but I did not believe. When you know something, you are intellectually sure of its truth, but when you believe, the truth seeps out of your bones. The movie didn’t end, the good guys didn’t win, and the dawn didn’t come. The gray twilight struggle continues. And at three am, in the glowing screen of our lives, the howls of March descend. Yet. The couple will walk by again this evening. And we will wave, smile, and wag as they shuffle. Painful. Constant. Indomitable.

Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Island Fun & Shopping between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Jeeps rented from Young’s and from Affordable Rentals have the required vehicle permits — all you need to do is add a day pass that you can purchase from Young’s, from Affordable, or from the Gatehouse. ttor.org/ccwr

Where to Take Your Take-Out
There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. There are still limitations under current guidance, and statewide and local face-covering orders remain in effect. For up-to-date details, visit nantucket.net/COVID-19-FAQ.php Around Town You'll find park benches spaced along most in-town streets. There are a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.
The Nantucket Whaling Museum 13 Broad Street has benches in front of the museum
Sculpture Pocket Park There is a “pocket park” on India Street between Federal & Centre sts that is adorned with sculptures. Benches on the bricked area provide seating.
The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children can play.

Harbor View Way is a short stroll from downtown. There are benches and a grassy area, along with a small stretch of beach. Limited parking is available.
Pocket Park at Francis & Union
“Arthur’s Park” portion of the Land Bank's Consue Springs Property
This small grassy area with two benches is about a half-mile or so walk from downtown Nantucket. It’s a lovely place to sit with some views of the water, but is not on the water. There is no parking.
On the edge of town beyond Consue Springs. It is a bit of a walk from Main Street. There is one picnic table and grassy area. No parking is available.
Old South Road Park Near the Airport Owned by the Town of Nantucket, this spacious grassy space is dotted with young trees and sculpture. There is a paved pathway and several benches. No parking, but it is next to an NRTA bus stop.
