by C. Oscar Olson The night sky above Nantucket is not like most places. Celestial bodies seem to shine differently here, thirty miles out to sea and surrounded by the dark waters of the Atlantic. We are far enough away from big city light pollution, and the air is clearer. On a clear night, this island boasts some of the best stargazing human eyes can behold. It was one of those clear island nights a little after 10 pm on October 1st in 1847. Maria Mitchell was alone, perched atop the Pacific National Bank on Main Street. where her father was a cashier. While families, friends, and neighbors in the houses below were settling in for the evening, Maria was sweeping the sky with her family’s tiny telescope. She spotted a blurry object that was not noted on any of her star charts: she had discovered a comet, a singular event that would change not only her life but the world as a we know it. Three months after her discovery, Mitchell published the notice of her discovery in Silliman’s Journal, now the American Journal of Sciences, under her father’s name due to her fear of gender discrimination by the scientific community. A month later she submitted her calculations of the comet’s orbit, memorializing her as the original discoverer of what became known as Miss Mitchell’s Comet. She was honored and celebrated that year at the Seneca Falls Convention, the world’s very first convention centered on women’s rights. By 1850, Mitchell became the first woman to be elected fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Frederick VI, the King of Denmark, was a fellow fan and advocate of astronomy. He decided to award a gold medal to discoverers of new comets, and though he died in 1839, his son, Christian VIII, carried on his wishes. After some debate and procedure, more than a year later, Maria’s gold medal finally arrived on Nantucket. Mitchell was born on Nantucket Island on August 1, 1818. She was the third of 10 children and was raised a Quaker, a religion practiced by many islanders of her day. She started her learning at a young age and attended Elizabeth Gardener's Small School. At the age of nine, she moved on to the North Grammar School. Two years following the founding of that establishment, her father built his own school on Howard Street, which Maria attended not only as a student, but also as a teaching assistant to her father.

The Veranda House burned and nobody noticed. Oh, we saw the pictures. We saw the plumes of smoke extending over the town, riding up, washing through the windmill and then out over the south shore. And we saw the pictures on social media and TV. However, the fire was an isolated event, much like the fireworks, the Pops, and Christmas Stroll. We hosted a news event that got our name onto local and national news. Any advertising is good advertising: My AirBnB views went through the roof. The Veranda House fire did not kill anyone because of luck and heroes. If local fisherman Nate Barber goes out of town for coffee that morning, people die. If the fire department gets stopped in island traffic, the Jared Coffin House and the entire north side of town burns. But 17 fire fighters, many volunteers, and a bucket brigade minimized the damage. Thank God. Let’s get another plate of cherrystones. Every hero arises out of a failure. Batman fights crime on the streets of Gotham because the police force is overwhelmed. Nate Barber, and others, accepted the curse of heroes because the island has failed. We do not have enough firefighters. We can’t make the Rhode Island owners of a historic wooden structure install sprinklers because that would make them walk away from the purchase. Every fire on Nantucket is a one-alarm fire. Only one firehouse will answer within three hours. Our most dire challenge comes from a lack of care. We feel the pull of care, of course. We return lost wallets to the police, bring stray dogs into our houses, and try to find stolen bicycles. We care. But any community, in particular an island community, needs people whose whole job is caring. We need teachers; we need policemen; we need social workers; we need therapists; we need nurses; we need surgeons. Instead, we have come to be an island of realtors and innkeepers. If I can rent out the bedrooms for $500 a night, good for me. The cash in my hand makes me smarter, tougher, and sharper than everyone else. We look at our community continued on page 22

All of Massachusetts is on some kind of drought status now as of this past weekend. Nantucket is still at a Level One which is considered a “mild drought.” We’re better off than much of the state, but it doesn’t mean we’re in the clear. Central and northeast regions of Massachusetts are in “Critical Drought” status. There is no meaningful rain in the forecast despite a few wet evenings. The hot temperatures continue and so will these conditions. It’s not atypical for the Northeast to experience droughts in the summer; 2016 and 2020 both saw statewide drought conditions. According to Julia Blatt, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Rivers Alliance, even though the dry conditions usually only last for a few months, they can still have harmful effects on local ecosystems and water supplies. More frequent and severe droughts are expected as climate change continues to increase temperatures, raise evaporation rates, and dry out soils—even in spite of more precipitation and heavier rainfall events overall in our region. The good news for our Nantucket habitats is that many plants and animals have evolved to live in our nutrient poor soils which drain quickly. Sandy soils and salty air make many species already adapted for drought-like or otherwise waterstressed conditions. What happens to our plants in a drought? Since plants can’t just pull up their roots and relocate to a shady or damp spot, they somehow need to deal with these ever-increasing drought conditions. Some plants are drought-resistant; plants that can withstand dry conditions without dying. A drought-resistant plant can survive drought by using three defense strategies: escaping, avoiding, or tolerating water loss. Succulents have thick fleshy leaves that store moisture, and they have a thick waxy layer to leaves and/or stems to prevent water loss. Our native prickly pear cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is a great example of this. You have to be pretty hearty to live in an extreme environment like Coatue. continued on page 18

Shelest Piano Duo—will bring their memorable creative collaboration to Nantucket, providing what Fanfare Magazine describes as “stirring performances of a rare repertory” to local music lovers. The couple will take center stage at 7 pm this Tuesday at First Congregational Church, 62 Centre Street, in the Nantucket Musical Arts Society’s fourth concert of its 2022 summer season. “Anna and Dimitri are gifted musicians who will add their unique perspectives to this already memorable season,” said Eva-Maria Tausig, Nantucket Musical Arts Society President. “They are highly skilled at playing duets with one piano, four hands.” At their official Carnegie Hall debut in February 2018, the Shelest Piano Duo’s CD release of Ukrainian Rhapsody brought renewed attention to the music of their homeland and introduced them to a broad array of new performance opportunities, from concert stages to formal state functions. In the words of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the pair has quickly “realized diplomacy through music." Since then, the CD has been a featured album on many radio stations nationwide; it has gained additional international prominence since the recent attack on Ukraine by Russia. NMAS will sponsor its informal and free “Meet the Artist” event featuring Anna and Dimitri Shelest at 5 pm this Monday in the Atheneum, 1 India Street. A conversation with the pair will feature a discussion of their musical careers and plans for the future. Tickets for the Shelest Duo’s Tuesday concert are available at the concert for $30, when doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church. Tickets may also be purchased in advance at the Antiques Depot, 2 South Beach St., and the Nantucket Community Music Center, 56 Centre St. The final two performances in the 2022 summer concert season will feature the Balourdet String Quartet on August 9; and violinist Itamar Zorman with pianist Adam Golka on August 16. Learning was always encouraged in the Mitchell household. Maria’s father taught her basic astronomy using his personal telescope, a spark that would start fires in her mind and around the world in the years to come. Thanks is also due, in part, to the religion under which she was raised. Quaker values held equality between the sexes high, especially when it came to intellect and education. Furthermore, Nantucket’s global importance as a worldwide whaling port meant that the wives, sisters, and daughters of sailors were often left alone for months if not years, while the men of the house were at sea. Household and business affairs were the sole responsibility of the women on Nantucket, a fact that fostered an air of independence and equality for island women. In 1856, Mitchell left her position at The Atheneum as the island’s first librarian and went on to travel the country and the world. In 1865, she became the first professor of astronomy at Vassar College, and was named director of the observatory there. Thanks in part to Mitchell's work at the school, Vassar College enrolled more students in mathematics and astronomy than Harvard University for more than 20 years. Since the world tends to forget, many efforts have been made to ensure the legacy of Maria Mitchell lives on. She has been inducted into the United States National Women’s Hall of Fame, and in 1989 was named a National Women’s History Month Honoree by the National Women’s History Project. She was the namesake of a World War II Liberty Ship, The S.S. Maria Mitchell, and New York’s Metro North commuter line has a train named for her, “The Maria Mitchell Comet.” The internet search engine Google even paid tribute with a “doodle” on her birthday in 2013. The most important act of memorialization is without a doubt the creation of the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA). Founded in 1902 by former students, family members, and admirers, their mission for well over a century has been to preserve the legacy of the astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator Maria Mitchell. She saw the magic to behold in science and the world around her and was always an advocate of the hands-on approach to learning. The MMA carries that torch today by fostering education of all of the sciences on Nantucket Island. The MMA is proud to offer programs, museums, and other learning experiences for people of all ages with two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, and a wide variety of history related programming throughout the year. indigenous to the island. The word “sculpture” in the title of the event suggests that this festival has evolved giving participants the freedom to creature virtually anything out of Nantucket’s golden sand. Organizers stress that participants must remember to avoid using non-beach friendly objects to protect our fragile ecosystem. Kathy Kelm, Director of NISDA, got the idea for the contest as she gathered with group of friends on the beach to have a picnic and to build sandcastles. Kelm was a part of the Rhode Island School of Design when she founded NISDA. Over the decades the event has taken on “its own energy” Kathy explained in a prior interview. “People come from all walks of life to be a part of this event. It is mysterious and magical what they can create and what they create is amazing; they are like artists at their studio.” Some participants entered every summer: it was the highlight of their time on Nantucket Island.

Ribbons will be given in each of four categories: Family, Youth 9+, Teen 13+, and Adult Teams. The age group of the team is that of its oldest member. A Family Team consists mainly of children, with one or two accompanying adults, older siblings, grandparents, etc. A Family Team that has all adults, a majority of adults or adults and teens is considered an Adult Team. Do encourage your children’s castle building, but if you are not registered, please remember no hands-on building! Awards will be based on creativity, concept, and design. Judges are island professional artists, visiting artists and educators, lecturers, staff, and faculty from NISDA. Spectators may cast a vote for People’s Choice at the registration table prior to 3:30 pm. Applications to participate and entry fees can be submitted in advance to July 28 at NISDA.org or in person at the Chamber of Commerce, upstairs at Zero Main Street. Registration on-site the day of the event is contingent on available space. Even if you are not participating in the contest, a visit to Jetties Beach to watch the sculpting in action or to view the finished products is well worth the trip. The waxy coating on leaves of some plants not only prevents water loss, but also protects the plant from salt spray effects. Seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) is a great example of this. So is High Tide Bush or Groundsel (Baccharis halminifolia). Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica) is also in this category with nutlets that are waxy coated seeds rather than fleshy berries that will desiccate. Most of the water a plant loses is lost due to a natural process called transpiration. Plants have little pores on the underside of their leaves called stomata. Plants will absorb water through their roots and release water as vapor into the air through these stomata. To survive in drought conditions, plants need to decrease transpiration to limit their water loss. Some plants that live in dry conditions have evolved to have smaller leaves and therefore fewer stomata. Other plants may completely shed their leaves in a drought, to prevent water loss. You can see this in action by color changes on the landscape. Fall hasn’t come early – some plants are just senescing or dropping leaves. The basic rule is that fewer leaves mean less water loss through transpiration. Another way plants reduce water stress is by only opening their stomata for gas exchange during the evening instead of daytime, reducing transpiration. This means the plant may grow slower or appear wilted during the day since photosynthesis is limited. When stressed, the plants do what they have to in order to survive if not thrive! For those plants where “escape” is a strategy, one option is to respond to drought by going to seed. Many seeds can withstand dry conditions for some time and germinate once there is moisture present again. Not an ideal option, but you may see some plants setting seed earlier in response to overly dry conditions. While some of our native vegetation is drought tolerant or can likely survive due to adaptations from living in harsh environments, other habitats on-island may not fare so well. Some of our existing habitats like our red-maple swamps, beech forests, and other woodland habitats established during a time period when there was relatively ample water available. As a result, many species in these habitats are drought-intolerant, such as bats, salamanders, toads, freshwater fishes, and turtles. Consequently, these species and their supporting habitats depend on current seasonal water regimes and are highly vulnerable to changes in where, how, and when water is delivered. continued on page 25

with an eye to sell it. What pictures can I put on Instagram? How can I stage Gramma’s bedroom for possible guests? How can I get more for me and take more from thee? Instead of realtors and innkeepers, we need surfers and fishermen. Surfers and fishermen come to the island for their passion. They will live in the basement, in the duplex, in the guest apartment if they can get into the lineup when the tide changes or if they can go out with their buddies on a boat and bring back a 800-pound tuna. The island, with its waves and fish, draw them here. Moreover, it shapes them. The sons and daughters of the island return here for those rewards from this island community. Any community, in particular an island community, needs those folks who aren’t trying to siphon another twenty bucks out of a wallet. We need carers. We need people who will work for less than a lawyer and do the work that the lawyers don’t want to do. They will help clean up the sick at Our Island Home. They will sit with the troubled and upset and talk them through it (without billable hours). They will teach the kids, rich poor, Hispanic, Anglo, or sick. In the past, the island has made a compact with the carers. You come out here and do what you do, and we will find a way to protect you from the Holocaust of Dollars. You can even catch a few Stripers. That compact is gone. Of course, the center of the Holocaust is housing. A teacher just signed on for the year at Nantucket Elementary School and will be pay-

ing $3,000 a month for a winter rental (no pets please). On an island of innkeepers and realtors, every room is a potential $3,500 a week. That three thousand a month is a bargain. He should sublet it. Dormitory housing has been offered as a possible solution, and it is part of a bucket brigade of last minute solutions. But how can you keep nurses onisland for a career, if they can’t save money for a house on Newtown Road? How can you have a continuity of care if you have to always reintroduce the clients to a new therapist? And how effective are the teachers when they are only on Zoom? When the plumbers and electricians are taking the evening boat back home, the teachers, the police, and the rest of the carers aren’t far behind. While housing is at the center, the fire feeds on other fuel. Many, both in schools and without, live in a C.E.O.’s mindset, waiting to be called for their TED Talk. Managers and bosses, with six-figure salaries, must know more than their underlings with mere fivefigure salaries. After all, they get paid more. They read “Grit” and “Seven Habits of Successful People.” So, if we let the malcontents and the “vision-blind” slip away, we can replace them with the young, the cheap, and good “team members.” Ten teachers are leaving the high school, most with gray houses and sea-girt home. They are leaving a changing school, which is majority-minority, has eleven different languages, and students from seventeen countries. In other words, a school that has more challenges than most mainland schools. The schools will attempt to replace those ten experienced teachers with people willing to pay $3,000 a month for rent (no pets please). Every fire is a one alarm fire on Nantucket. Only one firehouse is coming to answer the call. I smell smoke.

The core of Current Vintage is still vintage clothing and wine, presented in a fun and approachable fashion, with staff that is happy to help. Beth travels widely, searching for just the right clothing to fit life on Nantucket. “It’s a labor of love,” explained Beth, “our selection is very summer centric: we reflect current trends in vintage styles.” She describes her hand-chosen clothing selection as preppy, resortwear, and bohemian: “we have something to wear out to dinner or to a wedding or to a Nantucket event—easy and breezy, chic and comfortable.” And there is a variety of sizes available. Both Beth and Savannah make sure that shopping in Current Vintage is fun for all: customers who are novice wine drinkers will find themselves as welcome as the experts who come in to find just the right bottle. There may also be other impacts to our ponds and aquatic systems. We may see increases in the number, size, and duration of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Reduced flow and water levels for our waterways including groundwater and surface water, can in turn affect aquatic life and habitats. While it’s difficult to pinpoint this particular drought on climate change effects, looking at the data for the past few decades, the Northeast has experienced more summertime droughts in the last few years than is typical. In general, climate change is exacerbating our weather extremes; we’re seeing more precipitation during wet periods and longer durations with no precipitation during dry periods. These dry conditions have also increased fire activity in the state. Drought induced fire behavior can result in suppression challenges for fire resources and result in extended incidents so residents are asked to exercise caution while working with open flames. Please remember this and use extreme caution with fires on-island. Many Massachusetts communities have instituted water conservation measures limiting indoor and outdoor water use. These measures can include watering bans some with strict penalties. The state office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, which is in charge of declaring drought conditions, has released the following water use recommendations for residents and businesses. Level 1 drought recommendations (where Nantucket is at now): • Limit outdoor watering to 1 day a week, and only water between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. when less water will be lost to evaporation. • Consider switching to efficient toilets, faucets, and showers that use less water. The restrictions only get more severe from there. The state's website has more information on how to conserve water indoors and outdoors. Now is when we can also start to do some long-term planning to make our homes and businesses more drought tolerant in the longer term. One thing you can do to help conserve water is to plant native. Native plants require overall less supplemental water since they are adapted to Nantucket soil and climatic conditions. A New Kind of Brotherhood by C. Oscar Olson

A lot has changed on Nantucket in the past few years, some for good and some for not. But we like to focus on the good. This is why we couldn’t wait to take a seat at the all-new Brotherhood of Thieves revisualized restaurant. Located in the heart of town on Broad Street, this island hotspot gets its name from the title of an 1844 pamphlet written on Nantucket by Stephen S. Foster. In in, he derides those who continued to support the institution of slavery while the idea of abolition was catching fire across the country. Nantucket has long been a diverse and welcoming community, and that spirit thrives at The Brotherhood. The menu at Brotherhood has been overhauled in the best way. With loads of staples like satisfying sandwiches, burgers, and cool summer salads, sushi has also made its mark for 2022. The selection isn’t intimidating and there is absolutely something for everyone of all ages at the table. More than just the menu is new, there are two reimagined and unique spots to sit and sip this summer. The upstairs level is bright and refined and features dramatically different concept bars. On the one side you’ll find The Cisco Surf Bar: easygoing and fun, enjoy your favorite local beer, cocktails, and sushi, along with live music 7 nights a week. On the other side, The Notch Whiskey Bar, is cozy and classic. It boasts a lengthy list of spirits full of your favorites (including, of course, its namesake: Cisco’s top-rated Notch) and a wide variety of rarities. On the first floor, find your classic tavern vibe and the Brotherhood that longtime residents and visitors so loved. Low ceilings, low light, and exposed timber conjure feelings of the island’s whaling days. There’s a bar here, too, along with

so many seats and tables to fit your friends and family. Our favorite spot by far at Brotherhood is the outside beer garden. It’s breezy, shady, and you bet there’s a fourth bar to belly up to, or you can relax in the sun or under cover of shade. It was a steamy day outside for all of us, so we happily took a table under the tent and were immediately greeted by our superb server, Juan, who was attentive without hovering. We often struggle with selections when everything looks and sounds as good as it did at this much-loved landmark, but we knew exactly where we wanted to start. What’s a Nantucket sumLobster Avocado Salad mer without lobster? Piled high with the incredible crustacean, the Lobster Avocado Salad is as refreshing as it is delicious. The lobster is toothsome and tender and topped with peppery arugula and pickled red onion and is made perfect with the addition of a chipotle-lime dressing. We loved the sweet pops of grilled corn and diced mango which complimented the subtly sweet meat. If you’re searching for some finger food, look no further than the Cheesesteak Eggrolls. A perfectly crunchy crust reveals the most delicious cheesy, chopped steak. The mustard aioli brings it all together, and the four portions were just enough for us to share. Another cool option for those hot days is the Burrata and Beet Salad. The mild mozzarella-like cheese creates a lava flow of flavor when you slice into it, coating every leaf in its creamy goodness. It’s served-up with toasted pistachios and dressed with a lemon vinaigrette, and the house-made grilled focaccia was perfect for cleaning the plate. The Thai Chicken LetBurrata and Beet Salad tuce Wraps were a hand-

Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps held salad and our favorite first of the evening. Warm, well-seasoned chopped chicken is flavored with basil, cilantro, and a sesame-ginger vinaigrette. Cabbage, carrots, and peanuts added a delightful crunch. You can’t go to a bar without a getting a burger, and the Cisco Burger sure fits the bill. The patty was thick, rich, and meaty, cooked to an excellent medium rare and completely decked out. It was covered in tangy blue cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and savory bacon. The lettuce and special sauce provided cooling contrast. We should have ordered two. The sauce coating the Shrimp Scampi was simply divine. Creamy but not heavy, it burst with garlicky citrus flavor. The dish was packed with plenty of large butter-poached wild Shrimp Scampi shrimp and perfectly al dente fettuccini. The spring onions atop are easy on the eyes, and be sure to use more of that fantastic focaccia for soaking it all up. We expected nothing less than perfection from the Steak Frites, and needless to say we were not disappointed! The New York strip is spice-rubbed and grilled medium rare, just as we ordered. The steak is nicely complimented by the verdant chimichurri and a garlic aioli. We could smell the parmesan truffle fries alongside being dished out all night and couldn’t wait to have a taste. We love that the new Brotherhood is still serving the curly fries we all loved way back when: but they’re even better as truffle fries! Our favorite of the night came as a pleasant surprise. The moist swordfish steak in the Blackened Swordfish Sandwich is seasoned to perfection with a blend of cajuninspired spices. It comes complete with pickled veggies, arugula, cilantro, a Steak Frites slightly spicy piri piri

sauce, and sriacha aioli. The grilled, buttery brioche bun brings it all together. All the sandwiches and burgers at Brotherhood come with seasoned curly fries or a side salad—but bear in mind theirs is not your average boring side salad. The Brotherhood’s version is a beautiful blend of fresh greens, red onion, cucucumer slices, and juicy grape tomatoes; and it can be ordered dressed or not to make Cisco Burger for a healthier accompaniment. It’s hard to say no to fries, but a summery salad this good might just tempt you. The day was finally cooling down and the breeze was keeping us comfortable. We were so happy with the marvelous menu updates, we couldn’t wait to see what kind of sweet treats that Brotherhood had to offer up. A steadfast standby from the previous offerings, the Broho Cookie Sundae brought out the kid in all of us. Served up in a cast iron skillet, it’s cooked to order, so be sure to plan ahead during your meal. The chocolate melted into Broho Cookie Sundae the cookie as did the vanilla ice cream so we had to act fast – not a bite was wasted. Death By Chocolate reminded us of Bruce Botrotter and The Trunchbull. Seven layers of rich, dark sponge were rounded out with a divine chocolate frosting. Definitely designed to share. Seasonal and sublime, the Brotherhood’s Strawberry Shortcake is a lighter take on dessert. The cake is crispy on the outside and soft within, sweet strawberries sit beneath a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Brotherhood of Thieves is a rare spot on Nantucket: affordable and eclectic with a vibe for every tribe at any time of day. We will definitely be back before summer comes to a close.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits.
