Quiet beaches, crimson moors, crisp evenings, colorful bittersweet, festive pumpkins depicted in oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, wood carvings, photographs...and you get to choose your favorites! Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is showcasing the 2020 People’s Choice Exhibition, with the doors opening on Friday, September 25 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street. The show is available for in-person, distanced viewing through Ocober 10. “A long standing favorite among our patrons, the People’s Choice exhibition showcases a wide array of styles and mediums and during our 75th anniversary year. I’m sure we’ll see some extra special pieces,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “This interactive show not only offers the viewer the chance to enjoy the numerous works by our talented artists, they have the additional satisfaction of being a part of the exhibition by being allowed to vote for their favorite work,” added Frazier. “The AAN includes close to three hundred local artist members and we are grateful they continue to help make our award-winning AAN gallery one of the most comprehensive venues for local art. This year their works include everything from oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, wood carvings, mixed media and photographs,” said AAN gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “This voting exhibition gives our artists well-deserved bragging rights and all of the highlighted works will be on display for the duration of the exhibition,” added Greenhalgh. The digital version of the People’s Choice Exhibition will be on the AAN website—nantucketarts.org—under the Buy Art link beginning on October 2. The People’s Choice Exhibition will be on display through October 10. The gallery is open, Tuesday–Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and 2:30 to 5 pm. For more about the AAN exhibits, workshops and classes, and their member artists and events, visit nantucketarts.org.

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to announce the release of Disturber of Tradition: A Portrait of Anna Gardner, a biography written by island resident Barbara Ann White and published by the NHA. Anna Gardner (1816–1901) was a Nantucket educator, writer, abolitionist, and suffragist. A lifelong advocate of justice, she worked tirelessly toward her vision of an equitable society. A co-organizer of the 1841 Nantucket Anti-Slavery Convention, the first teacher and principal of the Jefferson School for freedmen in Charlottesville, Va., and among the first women to vote on Nantucket, Gardner engaged in movements locally, regionally, and nationally throughout the nineteenth century. Her story shows that societal change is possible at the ground level when everyday people put their principles into action. In this first full-length biography, White draws on extensive new research, providing the most comprehensive account of Gardner’s life to date and contextualizing it within a period of enormous change in both education and civil rights. “I first learned about Anna Gardner in the late 1970s when I was researching the African School on Nantucket. Over the years, I uncovered more about her contribution to reform movements, from abolition to suffrage. The more I learned, the more I realized how passionate she was about the civil rights of black people. She used her skill as a teacher, during and after the Civil War, to establish a cadre of professional black teachers in the South, believing that the best way to ensure full equality was through equal education,” says Barbara Ann White. “Her influence went far beyond the island, and, with this book, I hope that her story will reach beyond the island, too.” Barbara Ann White is also the author of Live to the Truth: The Life and Times of Cyrus Peirce and Hidden History of Nantucket, written with Frank Morral. Disturber of Tradition: A Portrait of Anna Gardner is available at the Museum Shop in the Nantucket Whaling Museum. For more information about this NHA publication or others visit NantucketMuseumShop.org. The NHA’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.

Repose

Sail Endeavor

by Greyson Keller

established 1982

Summer exhales into autumn, and the leaves begin to turn, The wind howls with some bite in its bark, as we embrace winter’s return. But the sunny season is still firmly in our thoughts, while we walk the garden at twilight. Row covers cradle the ebbing crops, as we tuck in our harvests at night. When morning comes, it delivers the dawn, and whimsy and wonder abound. The fog rolls out and dew glistens on the lawn, with gulls bellowing in the background. A perfect setting for a moment in the garden, where the graft turns into grub. Gather the veggies and beg for your pardon, for today we’re off to the golf club. September is a time for reminiscence and reflection: time for all to take a collective exhale as we look back on the growing season. The pace has slowed and we turn our attention to gathering harvests and preparing the delicious comfort food of autumn. I love September because we still enjoy warm days, the beaches have a bit more elbow room, and the roads begin to flow again. There are still plenty of tasks to be done, but, hopefully, we all have a bit more time for ourselves. Bike rides, dog walks, and surfing until sunset are all mind-clearing activities that mend our collective mental health. During these crisp mornings, I enjoy a cup of tea sitting in the garden. I try to clear my head just take in the beauty of the veggies and flowers all working together. The amount of white butterflies I’ve seen this year in the garden is incredible. They’re a welcome sight, true animation in the garden. It makes you realize that all the hard work isn’t just for you. There is a whole community out in the garden, and they’re all working together. Each bug and bloom are doing their jobs to keep the ecosystem moving forward. Maybe our community and country could take a page out of their book. Working together for the greater good seems like sound logic, but sometimes can feel inconvenient. If we all endure a bit of inconvenience now, things might start to feel a little safer. People will be less triggered, and we can get back to the close-knit community we always have been. In the meantime, there are plenty of tasks to keep us busy in the garden. In the landscape garden, the next couple of months are key to the continued development of your space. It’s a perfect time to dig and divide your perennials, plant trees, shrubs, and, of course, your spring bulbs. I’ve just ordered as many crocus bulbs as I could. My plan here is to carpet the front lawn with crocus blooms. It’ll be a sea of blue and white come March. To me, crocus are absolutely marvelous. They carry with them a briefcase brimming with hope. When I see their faces emerge from the frozen ground, sometimes through a blanket of snow, I can’t help but be filled with warmth and wonder. They’re a glimpse of what is to come. Spring has sprung and summer is sure to follow. Crocus are a great bulb for the lawn because they have their fifteen minutes of fame before we ever pull the mower out of the shed. continued on page 17

Consider the Cranberry by C. Oscar Olson

Though most of the season’s harvests have come to a close, one of our region’s most prized pieces of produce is just about to float to the surface. Before long, the bogs will be flooded for wet harvesting and machinery will be rolled out for dry harvesting, and that precious red fruit will begin its journey to your holiday dinners. For more than 150 years, the cranberry harvest has been an important aspect of both the heritage and future of agriculture on Nantucket. While many farms of all scales and scopes thrive, the Milestone Cranberry Bog is not only the oldest but also the largest continually operated farm on the island. Cranberry farming got a foothold on Nantucket in 1857 at this very location off the middle of Milestone Road. Not long ago, the Milestone Bog had 234 acres under active cultivation, making it the single largest contiguous bog on Earth. Since then, with the advent of improved irrigation techniques, the bog has been broken up into a series of smaller and more efficient growing sites. Ownership of the bog changed several times for the first 100 years of its existence, but that all changed in 1968 when it was purchased by Roy Larsen, Walter Beinecke, Jr., and Arthur Dean. The three men donated it to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation with the expectation that it be an income producer for the nonprofit organization. Stewards of nearly 1/3 of the land on Nantucket, it is the mission of the NCF to assist in the preservation of Nantucket's character by permanently conserving, maintaining, and managing natural areas and habitats and to encourage an appreciation of and interest in the Island's natural resources. In 1951, before the acquisition of the land by the NCF, native Nantucketer Tom Larrabee was hired as a field hand by the bog’s former owners. Though the job was unforgiving, Tom was taken by the area’s isolated beauty. He loved the land and for 15 years he put endless hours into studying the unique challenges that come with farming so far out to sea. The Foundation named him bog manager in 1979, and in 2009 he and his son Tom Jr. celebrated his 50th anniversary on the farm. Today the bog is proudly managed by the 3rd generation of Larrabees with Tom’s grandson Nick at the helm. While harvesting cranberries is the ultimate goal of the Milestone property, the boundaries sprawl beyond the bog itself. Only 1/3 of the land is utilized for farming, while the rest of the rolling hills, grass lands, and fresh water ponds of the Middle Moors are left open for rich populations of flora and fauna. Today, Milestone consists of 24 individual bog totaling 195 acres under active cranberry cultivation. Several varieties of cranberries are getting ready to take the plunge, ripening at different points in the season enabling an easier, spread out harvest. Though they yield varies from year to year, it is common to see as much as 2 million pounds of cranberries when the work is finished. Most (95%) of cranberries are harvested wet and go on to be frozen, dried, or processed into sauces and relishes. The rest are dry harvested and sold fresh. You can find genuine Nantucket cranberries at NCF offices during the harvest season. While cranberry cultivation is common on both sides of the Bourne Bridge, Milestone Bog has set itself apart from the rest of the competition. They are branded as being an exclusively organic farm, making the Nantucket Conservation Foundation the largest organic cranberry grower in the United States. continued on page 16

Climate Change on a Local Level

September 17-30, 2020

Page 13

ON: AMENT O S ING ORN COM TROLL S 2020

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation In early September, the Coastal Resiliency Advisory Committee for Nantucket adopted September as Climate Change Awareness month, followed swiftly by a proclamation by Nantucket Select Board. What does that mean? As part of the proclamation, the Select Board “…encourages all residents to learn more about the threats of climate change and sea level rise and the planning efforts underway to increase community resilience.” Designating September as Climate Change Awareness month isn’t just window dressing. There are multiple initiatives throughout this month to highlight the effects of climate change around the island and give Nantucketers opportunities to participate and learn more. For many, climate change is an amorphous concept and find it difficult to think about how it directly affects our daily lives. It is both big in concept and timeline. But that doesn’t make the threat any less real. The effects of climate change will impact all aspects of life on Nantucket. Even those who live away from the shore will be affected by flooded streets, transportation on and off the island, economic impacts, recreation, and in countless other ways. Multiple organizations and groups are using Climate Change Awareness month to educate the public about the potential effects of climate change through walks, talks, art, and more. Because we will see the effects of climate change in many forms, the education about the impacts similarly takes multiple angles. The Town of Nantucket is currently reviewing applications for consultants to assist in creating the Coastal Resiliency plan for the TON. Once secured, the consultants will work with the Coastal Resiliency Advisory Committee (CRAC) to continued on page 18

In September, the Members have arrived. They may have dawdled through the summer in Florida or Colorado, but now when the Albies are schooling, the wind is fresh, and the crowds have gone, they have flown up, settled in, and are enjoying the evening on their porches. For everyone else, Labor Day is that cruelest of holidays, when school and office call just as the island is at its best. The corn, the tomatoes, the surf, the sky—everything peaks just as the summer people are leaving. For the Members, their sunlit time has come. The harbor remains full. The Hinckleys and Herreshoffs motor in and dock, or if they are truly massive, moor in the outer harbor off of Coatue. The masts and brightwork glint in the setting sun, as the beaches burnish in the fading light. In that island light, I stood on the porch of Sayle’s waiting for my fried clams. Across the street, the yacht club was slowly filling for the evening soiree. The tent was up on the lawn, the social spacing was out, and cocktails were served. Hurricane lamps and a spray of tealights, lit up the tent in the fading evening light. The Range Rovers, the Mercedes, the Yukons were sliding in, off-loading the Members, and gently rolling off to a parking lot. The harbor had fallen to low tide, and down the beach near the creeks a man, a woman, and a little

girl stripped to their swimsuits. The shadows stretched across the water, while the houses on Monomoy winked in the setting sun. He put the little girl on his shoulders and she put a Stop and Shop bag on hers. They proceeded to walk into the water for fifty yards or so until they came to a small sailboat. He put the little girl on board, then he swung the groceries on board. then he pulled himself aboard, and the helped the woman up. They were careful, practiced, and ordinary. I’m sure they did this twice a day. In September, the Members assert their privilege. The houses in Sconset, Monomoy, and on Lincoln Circle are mowed, primped, and lit up. Cisco, while not in full August crowd, still has groups of ten or fifteen sun-worshippers circled around blankets and coolers. The golf courses, the tennis courts, even the bike paths remain busy. The casual visitor can make the mistake that, in September, this is an island for the Members, and membership has its privilege. But it isn’t. Nantucket has always been a poor man’s island. The most important folks out here were not the captains, the owners, or the visitors: they were the workers. Because we are Americans who view the rich as especially skilled, gifted, and lucky, our eyes go to the well-lit and graceful figures under the tent. Our eyes skip over the dozens workcontinued on page 15

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket ing in the shadows, feeding, cleaning, and caring for the Members. We used to joke that, on Nantucket, “millionaires mow the lawns of billionaires. I don’t think that joke works now. Going all the way back to early whaling, poor people came to the island in the hopes of making a buck. If they came out here, and if they worked hard and if they got lucky, they might make their fortune on a whale ship. In our recent history, carpenters and painters would rent a place until they had enough money to buy a piece of land. Then, using sweat equity, luck, and some missing lumber from a job site, would build a little house. You rented it out in the summer, sold it for more money than you ever thought you could get, and rode the Nantucket elevator up. But the elevator stopped working years ago. Now, the essential workers on Nantucket are families living in basements, storage units, and cars. They are riding six to a car to the job site. They are dropping their kids off to an apartment. They are sending their money home. The essential workers of Nantucket get any work they can, put their back into it, and disappear into a Friday night with a roll of cash in their pockets. They wait for low tide, then walk out to two sleeping bags in a sailboat. Unless they are particularly fortunate, the essential workers will not be getting loans for a building lot. They don’t have checking accounts, mortgage payments, or social security numbers. But they drive, they mow, they paint. More than a few of the contractors on-island watch them work from the safety of their pickup trucks.

Vol. 50 No. 11 • YesterdaysIsland.com Our current plague has cast a surgical light on the divisions in this country. Those of us who are the owners and employers have had houses to hide in, jobs we can do on a phone, and Netflix to keep us entertained. Our essential workers do not have those privileges. They need to ride the mowers, hide from officials, and hope their luck holds. For most of the summer, the island feared that the New York mogul, with a positive test, would fly out to his house, and infect the Summer. Or that the entitled Chads, taking a Covid year off, would party with their impervious ignorance and close Cisco for a month. But with our most recent spike, the true danger revealed itself. The rich remained in the light, but the poor hid in the infected dark. The positive tests come from painters, landscapers, and cleaners. The essential workers live and work in a Petri dish. Once among a basement of cleaners or a storage unit full of painters, the virus will metastasize. The catalyst, fear, will stop the tracing and send the sick to work. And then we will all be in line at the hospital. The island has always depended more on the people we don’t watch rather than the people we do. The unimportant people of Nantucket, the essential people of Nantucket, live and work in the shadows. Their names do not grace the membership lists, the tennis flights, or the reservation lists. None of those bright names carved into the plaques would be here if it wasn’t for dozens of essential workers laboring in the dark. But perhaps, in the future, we can make sure that we can welcome them into our light.

Consider the Cranberry from page 7

Before 2019, Nantucket was home to one other working cranberry bog. Located approximately six miles up Polpis Road, Windswept Cranberry Bog is now in the process of being restored to a fully functioning wetland. “It’s going to be a long process,” says NCF’s Director of Marketing and Communications Grace Hull. “There’s a lot of testing and surveying that still needs to be done. It’s not something that can happen overnight.” The decision was made not only to preserve to health of the harbor, but also came due to recent challenges in the American market. An influx of Canadian cranberries has driven the price down overall, and the bog was no longer economically viable to operate. In order to pick the fresh fruit, the vines must be completely dry. Even a slight shower the night before, heavy dew, or damp conditions from fog can be enough to delay harvest until conditions improve. As if 2020 hasn’t brought its fair share, these factors can provide more than enough challenges to growers. Dry harvesting involves lawnmower-like mechanical pickers that comb through the vines and convey the berries into a bag or box attached to the rear of the machine. Wet harvesting, the method used most often, is truly something to behold. The night before the harvest, bogs are flooded with up to 18 inches of water. Next, growers use a water reel, aptly referred to as an “egg beater,” to the churn the submerged plants and loosen the berries from the vine, allowing the air pockets within each fruit to float them to the surface. From there, the berries are corralled into a swirling soup of pinks and reds, loaded onto trucks and are soon sent on their way to processing. For hundreds of years, the cranberry has been prized for its reputation as a superfood. Before the settlers arrived on Nantucket, the island’s indigenous people enjoyed the annual harvest of sasumuneash—wild cranberries—for thousands of years. Berries were consumed both fresh and dried, while some were used to make pemmican, a shelf-stable mixture of fruit, dried meat, and animal fat. The fruit was used commonly in healing rituals to combat fever, injury, and even seasickness. When Europeans began exploring and settling New England, they were not sur-

prised to see the red berries thriving in the peat fields and swamps along the coast. They were familiar with European cranberry varieties, which were common in such environments in parts of England. The English had many names for the fruit, but “craneberries” was the most common due to the shape of cranberry flower and its resemblance to the head of a Sandhill crane. Today, we know well the health benefits of consuming cranberries. The terrifically tart morsels are loaded with vitamin C, with an eight ounce glass of cranberry juice packing over 150% of your recommended daily allowance. There are also bacteria blocking benefits that ward off UTIs and ulcers, and these benefits are available in an array of cranberry products. Cranberries also contain proanthocyanidins, or PACs, which are linked to reducing infection, promoting heart health, decreasing inflammation, and supporting digestive health. In previous years, the harvest on Nantucket has been celebrated with the annual Nantucket Cranberry Festival: a day of family fun held Columbus Day weekend at the Milestone Bog. Though pandemic restrictions have forced the organization to cancel one of the island’s favorite and final hurrahs of the year, there are still ways to enjoy the 17th year of this Nantucket tradition. The NCF is committed to continue their education and outreach around the cranberry harvest and its history to the community. “Our Cranberry Festival is listed as one of those fall events you simply must attend, and we are going to miss it very much this year,” says Grace Hull. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the property and how everything works. Instead, we’re planning a number of walking tours.” Over a period of two weeks in early to mid October, small groups will be shown guided tours of the Milestone Bog twice a day. The tours will be led by NCF’s Neil Foley in conjunction with bog manager Nick Larrabee. Keep an eye on their website NantucketConservation.org and watch their social media pages @ackconservation for more information. “We still want to get people out there and learn about the bogs, and we’re hoping to be able to sell some dry picked berries as well.” In addition to the walking tours, NCF will have a table at the Sustainable Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 10. “Come by for fresh cranberries and some Nantucket Conservation swag!” Hull remarks. As the official fruit of the state of Massachusetts, cranberries have deep roots in what defines this land we love. Be sure to enjoy the fruits of the Foundation’s labor, and with them all the good things the arrival of autumn has to offer.

Home Gardening

V

Artists Association of Nantucket invites you to

from page 5

There are a few effective ways to plant bulbs. If you’re planting in a lawn, like I’ll be doing, an old fashioned bulb planter is best. It creates a core in the soil where you can just drop a few bulbs in and then snugly fit the core back in the hole. If you’re planting bulbs in a garden, there are attachments you can get for your household drill that will act as a mini-auger. This is super quick and efficient. Now is the time to be planting bulbs of all kinds, not just floral. You can also plant your garlic cloves for an early summer harvest. Looking to other areas of the garden, if you have perennials or ornamental grasses that have outgrown their space like a 35-year-old child living in their parent’s basement, now is an ideal time to dig them up and divide them. The first step for me is to cut the plant back to the crown. If you’re dividing an ornamental grass, it can be a bit of a bummer to cut it back when the seed heads have begun their dance with the wind. It will, however, make the process much easier for you. Once the plant is cut back and you have a nice, neat mound, it’s time for the digging. Try to start a fair distance away from the crown and work your way in. Most of the time a quality root ball will begin to show itself. Slice and lever, slice and lever all around the plant. Once it pops loose, now is the time to be brave. Take your spade and chop it right in half. This isn’t dainty or delicate. This needs sleeves rolled up to the elbow and a swift kick of the spade with some tightly-laced boots. If your plant is big enough, you might be able to divide it more than once. Now that you have several new plants, I always like to replant one of them back where they were planted. Then take the rest and disperse them in other areas in the garden. Another option is to pot them up and give them to a friend or family member. All that it cost you was a little sweat equity. Once all your plants are planted or potted, always remember to give them a deep drink of water. They’ll thank you for it. I also recommend top dressing with a little mulch. It looks great, retains that moisture, and suppresses the weeds. Let’s touch on the lawn areas of your landscape as well. September and October are great months to do some lawn maintenance. Aerating your lawn is an important step and will alleviate compaction. I like to do this along with dethatching. It makes raking the plugs up much easier. That way your lawn doesn’t look like a flock of geese have taken up residence. Dethatching also removes all the dead thatch that has built up over the growing season. This helps prevent fungus during the hot and humid months of summer. Once you’ve completed the aerating and dethatching, it’s a good idea to topdress with some nice compost or complete planting mix. Rake it into the lawn so it rests below the green blades of your grass, then overseed and water. If you’re one who likes a well maintained and healthy lawn, this’ll do the trick. Just to chat briefly about our veggies we’ve been working so hard on all season, autumn will roll on and your cole crops will too. Things like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale all enjoy the cooler weather. It’s definitely advantageous to cloak them with a row cover at night to protect from frosts and winds. If you do this, you’ll be able to have fresh greens from the garden well into the holiday season. For now, let’s remember to slow down and enjoy the change of season. Breathe deeply and take pride in your garden, no matter the size. Compliment your friends and family on their gardens and watch their faces light up with pride. Remember how eager everyone was to get them started this spring and remember the work that went into them. It’s effortless and doesn’t cost a thing to give a few words of encouragement, whether or not they’re about a garden.

create an island-wide plan. The TON is also working on a Resilient Nantucket toolkit for adapting historic resources for sea level rise. The CRAC has been doing much lately to disseminate information as they work on gathering information to assist with the Coastal Resiliency Plan. Recently, members presented the Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Coastal Hazards produced by the Woods Hole Sea Grant and others. The handbook aims to increase the resiliency of coastal communities by encouraging actions that reduce the risk to family and property. The Nantucket CRAC hopes to encourage Nantucket residents to consider the recommendations in this guide that covers shortterm hazards like storms as well as long term hazards like sea level rise. Preparing for coastal hazards by planning, performing home maintenance, and undertaking preventative retrofits enhances individual resilience and helps create a strong community. In addition to the Homeowner’s Handbook, the CRAC Education Subcommittee is working on a brochure for Nantucket homeowners recommending ways to help protect homes from flood damage. This includes measures to keep water out as well as resilience measures to protect your home and its contents should water come into the structure. The CRAC Education committee hopes to have this brochure out to the public by the end of the month. The Coastal Resilience Advisory Committee meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 10 am via Zoom and is open for the public to attend. The meeting link and agenda are posted in advance and available at nantucketma.gov/calendar.aspx. Recordings of the meetings are posted on the Town’s Youtube channel. A newer organization for the island, ACKlimate, just celebrated its one year anniversary. ACKlimate Nantucket provides a platform at ACKlimate.org for the public-private partnership between the community, organizations, and Town of Nantucket on issues of resilience and sustainability. This organization was born out of discussions at the 2019 conference “Keeping History Above Water.” With multiple on-island partners, ACKlimate has multiple goals which revolve around coordinating and promoting activities addressing climate change and sea level rise and its impact on the built and natural environments. This summer, ACKlimate and the Artists Association of Nantucket commissioned artist Kevin Stanton to paint a mural on New Whale Street. The painting of whales floating well above historic downtown is another way to catch peoples’ eyes and highlight the possibilities with sea level rise. Information about sea level rise predictions for Nantucket will accompany the beautiful blue tones of the painting in a marriage of art and information. ACKlimate lists multiple events on their website for Climate Change Awareness month and often posts information @ACKlimate on Facebook and Instagram. Events include talks with local scientists, multiple Climate Change Awareness Walks with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and a sustainability panel with high school students hosted by Massachusetts Audubon Society. On September 18th, all will have an opportunity to participate in the first Resilient Nantucket Forum: Resilient Nantucket: Preparing Your Historic Property for a Future of Rising Seas. This TON project focuses on improving practices for re-

silience of historic structures, streetscapes, and the community using demonstrated techniques, science-based solutions, and draws upon the experiences of subject-matter experts working in this field. You can join this free public event at either 11:30 am or 6 pm on the 18th for a presentation and discussion on flood risk. In addition to all the work going on around the island in September, ReMain Nantucket recently announced its newest venture: Envision Resilience: Nantucket Challenge. This coastal resilience initiative will leverage academia and local leadership to develop and consider innovative and adaptive solutions to sea level rise. More than 20 local and regional advisors will work with student groups from different universities and colleges. The interdisciplinary teams will be asked to identify threats, research solutions, and propose adaptive designs that align with the Town’s Coastal Community Resilience Planning time increments of 2030, 2050 and 2100. “By bringing together the experience of local experts, the visionary insight of design students, and stories from the people who live here, ReMain Nantucket hopes to inspire the Nantucket community to envision a future that is resilient in the face of sea level rise,” said Cecil Barron Jensen, Executive Director of ReMain Nantucket. The final designs will be conceptual, showcasing principles and pathways, rather than project lists or prescriptive blueprints. The design proposals will be evaluated at a summer 2021 exhibition, during which the Island community will be invited to participate in a series of concurrent cultural and community events. With so much going on around coastal resiliency, sea level rise, and climate change, it may be difficult to sort through all the different events, news, challenges, and exhibitions. With such a complex problem, it will take many types of solutions to be resilient. We are fortunate our small island is already looking so far ahead, being innovative, and trying a multi-pronged approach to make this huge concept local.

Featured Restaurant: Black-Eyed Susan’s

September Dining Delights

It’s been said that September is the finest month on Nantucket. As summer turns to autumn, the weather is warm enough to enjoy the beach, downtown shops are hosting sales, evenings are cool and clear, and Black-Eyed Susan’s is still open for us all to enjoy their unique cuisine of international flavor. Still at the top of their game after more than 25 years, co-owners Susan Handy and Executive Chef Jeff Worster have, with Chef de Cuisine Todd Edwards, been serving their patrons bountiful breakfasts and delicious dinners in their cozy eatery in the heart of town at 10 India Street with a few changes this year. To follow current state and local guidelines, their indoor tables are spaced farther apart and they are unable to allow guests to fill the prized seats at the granite counter along their open kitchen. Patrons are also able to dine on the private patio alongside Black-eyed Susan’s, and new for 2020, the restaurant is offering their entire dinner menu for takeout and curbside pickup. Takeout orders that are called in to 508-325-0308 between 4 pm and 8:30 pm are ready for pickup between 5:20 pm and 9 pm. At Black-eyed Susan’s you could close your eyes and pick any dish: whatever it is, it will be delicious. We started our recent meal with a Tuna Tartar that was delicate, firm, and sparkling fresh. The finely diced tuna was shaped with briney capers, topped with tiny cubes of pickled cucumber, and edged with a spicy-sweet gochujang aoili. It all combined for a delectable bite that is even better on the triangles of warm scallion pancake served alongside. Part of the allure of Black-Eyed Susan’s is knowing that you will be treated to surprising flavor combinations as well as seasonings and preparations you’ve never before tasted. Unusual and exciting, the Piri Piri Cauliflower appetizer is a great example and a real treat for vegetarians and vegans. The sautéed cauliflower florets are lightly browned and tossed in fiery chili sauce (the chef’s description, not ours, but we agree), and served over cooling coconut yogurt. Cilantro and crunchy salt+vinegar potato crisps are sprinkled overtop. The heat doesn’t destroy the flavor, but it does echo through your mouth and linger a bit until settling into a pleasant tingle. Baba Ganoush is also served in a new presentation at Black-Eyed Susan’s. The smooth house-made eggplant spread has just enough smoke and is superb with the fruity flavored cherry-sumac honey poured over it. Grilled flatbread perfect for dipping accompanies. Our table favorite among the autumn appetizers is Esquites, an off-the-cob version of Mexican Street Corn. Spicy and sweet, tangy and smoky, this dish is full of flavor and served in generous portion. A light and zingy citrusy mayonesa coats the crisp kernels of grilled corn. Crumbles of queso are stirred in, and cilantro and a Mexican chili-lime-salt blend is sprinkled overtop. If you can’t decide which appetizer is calling your name, order two and for your entree order the Whole Leaf Caesar Salad or the Black-Eyed Susan’s Half Portion staples: Capellini with Tomatoes, Basil, & Garlic or the luscious Linguini con le Vongole.

If what you desire is a casual style entree, then the Pork’strami Taco Platter is the dish for you. Slices of pastrami-spiced smoked pork are fanned across the platter with wide tracings of a smooth and tangy pimento cheese crema. Slices of pickled cucumber and a pile of spicy red cabbage slaw are provided along with housemade pretzel tortillas so that you can make your own tacos. Fried chicken is usually finger-food—the Tokyo Fried Chicken served at Black-Eyed Susan’s is finger-licking good, but it’s not a version you’ll want to eat with your hands. The succulent boneless chicken thighs are moist and meaty with a delightfully crunchy panko coating. The chicken is served on a bed of fried rice with shredded sweet potato, ham, egg, and green onion. Crispy shallots and a smoky mayo finishes the dish. We love the way Chef Worster designs seafood dishes that harvests from the sea with ingredients from the garden; and we love how well Chef Edwards cooks them. The Seared Wester Ross Salmon was sheer perfection! The fish is cooked through but rare in the center, seared golden top and bottom, and wonderfully crisped on the edges. Underneath is a ragout of summer: roasted radishes, king trumpet mushrooms, thyme, Tuscan kale, and parsley. We could smell the enticing aroma of the Wild Gulf Shrimp Florentine as Roz brought it to our table. Bridging summer and fall, the chefs have combined plump, tender shrimp and pillowy parmesan gnocchi in a creamy mix of fresh tomato and spinach with spicy strips of cherry pepper. Toasty crumbs mixed with lemon zest and pecorino cheese add a final tasty crunch. Chocolate lovers will be delighted that they can still enjoy the legendary Chocolate Pot de Creme that has been a favorite dessert at Black-Eyed Susan’s for years. Dense but still creamy, this cup of deep, dark chocolate is served with a pair of freshly baked cookies: a coconut macaroon and macadamia nut cookie. This season Black-Eyed Susan’s has replaced their Gelato with Cinnamon Tortillas with a light, moist Tres Leche Cake filled with flavor and topped with fresh strawberries and served in a pool of Mexican vanilla creme anglaise. SSA Extends Art Contest Deadline

The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority (SSA) has extended the entry submission date to September 30 for its fifth annual “Sail into Imagination” art contest for students in grades K-12 residing in the SSA’s port communities of Falmouth, Hyannis, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, New Bedford, and Fairhaven. Students in other local communities within the Cape & Islands are eligible to submit artwork that will be judged in special award categories to be featured in a Spotlight page in the 2021 calendar. Four prize winners from non-port communities will be selected in one of four categories. “In light of the COVID pandemic, we decided to extend the deadline and open up the art contest to students residing in all of our local communities so everyone could join this year’s contest. Not only will it give local students an outlet to create a unique work of art, our local parents and teachers can use this contest as a new activity to help keep their children engaged and active,” said Kimberlee McHugh, the Steamship Authority’s director of marketing. The contest theme “Sail into Imagination” was conceived to encourage students to share their vision of traveling aboard SSA ferries and to inspire artistic interpretations of growing up by the sea. In addition to having their art displayed in the calendar and on select SSA ferries, 13 winners will be awarded a $100 SSA gift card. All entrants, regardless of whether they are chosen for the calendar, will also be entered to win a grand prize of a $150 VISA gift card. Students are invited to submit entries online, through the mail or by dropping their submissions at Steamship Authority terminals no later than September 30, 2020. Entries submitted by U.S. Mail may be directed to the SSA’s Marketing Department at 509 Falmouth Road, Suite 1C, Mashpee, MA 02649. Winners will be announced on the Steamship Authority’s website in October. For official contest rules, instructions or to download a Contest Entry/Release Form, visit steamshipauthority.com/sailintoimagination.

Leave only footprints...

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Where to Take Your Take-Out

There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. There are still limitations under current guidance, and statewide and local face-covering orders remain in effect. For up-to-date details, visit nantucket.net/COVID-19-FAQ.php Around Town You'll find park benches spaced along most in-town streets.
