Twenty-seven years ago a small group of volunteers came together to try to do something big for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Led by an ardent hospital supporter, the late Kathryn Clauss, they imagined what seemed impossible: what if we could get the world-famous Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra to come to Nantucket? Along with a few tireless advocates on the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Board of Trustees, including Margaretta Andrews and Charles Balas, Clauss brought the hospital community together to raise funds and popular support for the idea. Somehow, they pulled it off. Those first years in the late 1990s were marked by widespread community generosity and volunteerism, as hundreds of island residents came together to

A Week of Art Events

This is a busy week for art on Nantucket. On Friday, August 12, the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) will host their annual Artist/Patron Exhibition, beginning on Friday, August 12. The exhibition will be on display through Monday, September 5 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. “Truly one of AAN’s longest standing traditions, summer of 2022 marks the 73rd year we’ve featured the celebrated Artist/Patron exhibition,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “Historically our artists bring in their strongest works for this special exhibition, which we consider one of the high points of our gallery season. We are proud to showcase our local artist member’s newest works and look forward to a robust exhibition,” added Frazier. continued on page 18

There are plenty of pastimes to be had on Nantucket: many miles of trails and bike paths, an abundance of activities and attractions, so many marvelous museums. And of course, there is the ocean. Whether it’s swimming or shelling or just walking in the surf with wet, sandy feet, the beach never seems to get old. This year, with the help of our friend Steve Tornovish, we rediscovered a longlost love for a coastal activity in our family: fishing. All year long and across the island’s endless edge, there is always a chance for a good catch. If there are plenty of fish in the sea, then Nantucket is the place to find them. When at the shore, wetting a line is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family, relax, contemplate, and if you’re lucky, fight a good fish or even feed your family and friends. Our waters are home to a myriad of species like fluke, bluefish, black bass, bonito, and of course striped bass. Steve Tornovish, or “Tuna” as he is locally known, has spent his life fishing

Warmer Water Draws More Sharks by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation As part of a recent work trip to Maryland, I found myself at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It was a great facility with an amazing central tank with creatures large and small from the Atlantic. It’s fun to go from tank to tank and check out all the creatures. But it’s that central tank full of the BIG fish that draws the crowds. With the crowd blocking the glass, I wasn’t sure what was in there at first: an octopus? A giant sea turtle? Then I heard it. The anthem sung by a million toddlers torturing parents and care-givers alike. “Baby shark, do, do, do, do, do…” You know the rest. It was funny to go all the way to Maryland to see the sharks up-close. Hammerheads, sandbar sharks, sand tiger sharks, and rough tailed rays–all species cruising through the aquarium–could be found right here on Nantucket! I could have stayed home and just jumped in the water. Sharks are all anyone seems to be talking about lately. How many beach closings have there been in the past few weeks due to shark sightings? More than 45 confirmed fins just last week. It seems like every other day there are multiple closings along the south shore. So why are there more and different shark species around Nantucket? What are they doing and are they a danger to us? Let’s dig in and find out more. Many people know that the movie Jaws was filmed on our neighboring island, Martha’s Vineyard (though inspired by a true shark story from New Jersey in 1916). That movie was successful in launching a “scary nature creature” industry, but it also succeeded in striking fear of the ocean and fear of sharks in particular. Shark populations in general, but certainly Great Whites, declined significantly afterwards due to overfishing and decline in prey numbers. More recent consercontinued on page 17

The other day, I waited on Surfside Road. I know all of the ways to duck around the traffic, slip up a dirt road, but I was listening to a radio and missed the turn. I was carrying two air conditioners to a house I was caretaking. With the heat and humidity of the summer on us, the owners wanted to cool off the bedrooms, at least. On the radio, the Harbormaster had sent out a message that pretty much all of the south shore was closed to swimming due to sharks. As for me, I was stuck behind a Defender 90 from New Jersey with five beach chairs hanging on a rack off the spare tire. And while I was sitting stock still in traffic, amazed at my own stupidity, I fell out of time. Twenty-five years from now, I, or perhaps a son, will be flabbergasted at this moment. I am not sure what is the most shocking. Perhaps, in twenty-five years, they will wonder why I was riding around behind an internal combustion engine warming the air, melting the poles, and poisoning the future. Or, perhaps, they will sense the irony of installing air-conditioning on Nantucket, an island that has been cooled by sea breezes and fog for thousands of years. Or finally, they will be amused at how often we hit the snooze button and, even with sharks hunting up and down the beaches, we still send our children into the water. It’s the new normal which is the problem. When it’s raining meatballs, we will get extra heavy windshield wipers, shovel them off the deck, and invoice the owners. We get so caught up in keeping ahead of our voicemail and to-do lists, we don’t really notice when things go crazy. And when things go crazy and rain meatballs, we incorporate the crazy into the normal, like chocolate chips into cookies. “The meatballs really taste good today. I put two dozen in the freezer for the winter.” Last weekend, forty-five sharks were spotted on the south side of the island. Many of them starred in twenty-first century iPhone cinema. One Instagram film shows the same gigantic white shark chew up three seals in about ten minutes. Another film catches a hammerhead bite a striped bass in half, in a breaking wave. Lots of excitement for the whole family. Personally, I remember going to Fisherman’s Beach with the young men, and continued on page 22

along the beautiful beaches of his beloved island home. From Brant Point to Great Point, ‘Sconset, Madaket, and everything in between, there’s almost always action to be had. “I am a Nantucket native,” he says, “I was taught to fish by Mr. Dan Kelliher, my fourth grade science teacher.” Steve remembers Kelliher fondly. “He was an impossibly tall man. He would teach us to cast a fishing rod on the playground at Academy Hill School. He used a tennis ball with an eye hook in it as the lure.” Steve still summons those lessons. “I channel him as I teach folks to cast. He also taught us some fishing knots that I use to this day. I remember him fondly.” Steve Tuna’s Fishing Adventures will take you to places that most island visitors, and even some locals, rarely get to see. Get up bright and early and fish first thing or go at your own pace and enjoy an unforgettable day at the beach, it’ll always be your choice when on one of Steve Tuna’s Fishing Adventures. He will always take you to the best spots based on your preference, current conditions, and his extensive knowledge, and he’ll also provide gear and all the instruction anyone will need. But there is no promise that you’ll bring home the bacon. “The charter business happened by accident,” he says “like many things in my life. A friend who did some private guiding asked me to take some of his clients out, as my friend was overloaded with his main job. I was worried that I wouldn’t know what to do! So I decided to conduct an experiment. I learned that my daughter’s boyfriend Zach had never caught a fish.” He told Zach to get his butt in the truck. “I took him to 40th Pole, taught him to cast, and he ended up catching three bluefish. That’s when I concluded that I might be able to be a guide.” continued on page 23

The annual Boston Pops on Nantucket at Jetties Beach has grown to be one of the most beloved events of summer on Nantucket, and it still directly supports the operations of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Award-winning vocalist Marc Martel will take the stage as the special musical guest at the 25th anniversary Boston Pops on Nantucket alongside the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, bringing the music of legendary rock band Queen, to Nantucket on August 13th at Jetties Beach. Martel is widely known for his performance as the voice of Freddie Mercury in the 2018 Oscar-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody as well as for being selected by the original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor to front their official tribute, The Queen Extravaganza. General admission tickets are on sale at NantucketHospital.org/pops for this special beach concert, and as of press time, some are still available. No tickets will be sold at the venue: all must be purchased in advance. As has been the tradition, the cost of attending this event sitting on a blanket you bring to the beach is very reasonable: adult tickets are $30 per person; tickets for kids are just $10 each (children under age 5 are admitted free). There are a few differences for 2022: ~ In the interest of safety, early arrival will not be permitted. Gates open at 4:30 pm. Lining up and congregating on Hulbert Avenue/Charles Street will only be allowed starting at 3 pm. ~ All tickets must be scanned by security staff at the entrance gate. You may show your confirmation code on your smartphone or print your confirmation email that shows your code. There is also an option to print your tickets. ~ One thousand fewer tickets are being sold, so the audience will be smaller. ~ Security staff will perform contactless bag checks at the entrance gate, and the following items are prohibited: alcoholic beverages of any kind, glass bottles, beach umbrellas & shade structures, drones or flying devices, tarps larger than 8 feet by 8 feet, pets (except service animals), firearms, explosives, weapons of any kind and any items deemed a possible threat to safety. ~ Free bicycle parking is available near the entrance at Bathing Beach Road, but no bicycles will be permitted inside the concert area. ~ Attendees are not permitted to cordon off your chairs with tape or rope A complete list of FAQs and rules can be found at NantucketHospital.org. Warmer Water Draws Sharks from page 7

vation efforts and protections have helped many shark species rebound. Of course, there have always been sharks in the ocean. The recent sightings are the results of a combination of things. First, there are more eyeballs on the water. The heatwave of summer plus post-pandemic travel has meant more people on our Nantucket beaches than ever before. Drones, more beaches with lifeguards, and more beach-goers mean more people looking, watching for, and reporting shark activity. Another primary factor is shark conservation. Many scientists believe that there are more sharks around Nantucket during the last five years partly because the populations are in recovery after an 80% decimation from being overfished in past decades. While shark populations are still considered critical globally, marine biologists are beginning to see the benefits of effective fisheries management, which is then leading to population increases across a number of species that provide food for sharks.

As for those species that are newer to our waters? The waters around New England are warming making them more hospitable to some species. NASA’s Earth Observatory reports that the Gulf of Maine, which stretches from Cape Cod to Canada, is warming faster than 96 percent of the world’s oceans. These waters, which include those around Nantucket, are also staying warmer longer. This heat wave we’re experiencing now will delay cooling in the fall. Since 2008, fall sea surface temperatures have warmed around 1.1 degree each decade. Four of the warmest fall seasons have occurred in the past seven years. This means warm water species we’ve been thinking of as anomalies, may become regular visitors. If the trend continues, they may become seasonal residents. The temperature changes have not gone unnoticed by anglers and beach goers. On Nantucket, we’ve received reports of unusual animals in the area—including creatures like the smooth hammerhead shark. Other familiar marine species, such as herring and striped bass, are also sticking around longer instead of migrating. continued on page 21

The outdoor art show is free and open to the public, and has a rain date of Monday, August 15. The Sidewalk Art Show was founded by artist Maud Stumm, predating the Artists Association by fifteen years. Originally held for several days in August, it was open to professional and amateur artists. “In 1960, AAN took the reins of the event, and it is now one of our signature offerings. We are proud to be part of such a historic island tradition,” said Frazier. “Still going strong ninety-two years later, the Sidewalk Show is a great way to meet some of the island’s local artists and find some special art. Warmer Water Draws Sharks from page 17

You’ve probably seen the many photos and videos going around of hammerhead sharks close to shore and even in the surf of popular beaches. I wrote about a few sightings in 2020, but this year’s sightings (plus photos and videos!) have far out-matched previous seasons. Hammerhead sharks, of which there are many species, are more typically found in warmer, tropical-like waters. With the gulf stream extending further north, hammerheads are being seen more frequently along the coast where previously it would have been too cold. Unlike great white sharks, hammerheads and other warm water species like bull and tiger sharks cannot regulate their body temperatures by generating heat. Cold water shuts them down. The warming water is extending their range. They also go where the food is. Hammerheads feed on fish, invertebrates and small sharks and rays. They generally avoid interreacting with humans and are not considered aggressive. Another important thing to remember is that predators follow the food. It isn’t just all about temperature, though that is important. Great White sharks, for example, like our cooler water and are here now following the food. Many conservation efforts for marine mammals (including seals) and changes in the fishery for other species, like the Atlantic menhaden, mean more fish and prey species. Baitfish are moving in followed by bigger fish (stripers, porgies, menhaden, etc.), and the bigger predators follow them. More sharks in the surf are a good sign to anglers that the fish are around. It may be tricky to land a fish when there’s a shark or a seal also fishing for a meal, but the fish are there. Anglers have been noticing changes to ocean life for some time. It might not just be new species, but also changes to the timing of arrivals such as bonito and false albacore, striped bass, and bluefish—their activity is primarily temperature dependent. As the waters warm earlier in the season and stays warmer later into the fall, the fishing changes as well. We’ve already had some bonito caught as well as some super early albies. As one Florida marine biologist noted: “To see lots of sharks means you have a robust ecosystem that can support them.” And that is a good thing. Remember: you have just a 1 in 4,332,817 chance of dying from a shark bite. You’re more likely to die from a lightning strike, fireworks, or a space accident.

pulling them out when a seal swam by. I believed that swimming with a large wild animal was probably a bad idea, but I have since grown a touch more cavalier about the seals. We are so comfortable, we don’t photograph them as much as we used to. And the kids aren’t in the water anyhow. The lifeguards that drive by on ATVs warn us every two hours about chumming the surf. So much of the change that goes on seems so much larger than we are. Awareness and recycling hasn’t prevented the return of Jaws to the South Shore (with special musical tribute from John Williams and the Boston Pops). People have been warning us about the future of cars on-island, housing, and global warming for forty years. When the dire predictions were coming from Al Gore and Mike Kopko, we were able to let those slip to the back of our minds like parking tickets and bounced checks. The key to enjoying life on Nantucket is to look past the obvious. Or, in the local dialect, “Wait a month.” Meanwhile, seals begat sharks. “Jaws” appears to have overestimated the concern and caution that the average beachgoer has. Chief Brody isn’t here to close the beaches. Instead, we’ll make do with a drone or two and some lifeguards on ATVs. Until soccer practice starts and they head back to Trinity and Hamilton. At that point, remember not to use a red air mattress. Too often, when you stop someone in the grocery store and wave the red flag of crazy, you get a shrug and a “What are you going to do about it?” I suppose

I can’t do anything. I can’t cool the waters, chase the seals away, or coax the predators into deeper waters. I was thinking of making some signs that say “Kids are friends, not food” but there aren’t any billboards in the water off of Cisco. I understand why my friends smile, pat me on the shoulder, and ask if the store had restocked the double-stufs. Somehow, during the last few years, the island passed over a line when tolerance should have become alarm and alarm should have become outrage. Paul Revere rode through town and everyone kept sleeping. Hopefully, the Redcoats won’t prevent me from turning over the two houses in Sconset. Guests are coming on Saturday. The meatballs are falling. Restaurants can’t open because they don’t have the staff. Traffic is stationary, before the new developments come on-line with more AirBnB guests. The high school graduates step right off the parade float and get on an outbound ferry, followed almost immediately by their teachers. The scallops preceded them a few years ago. The schools, the hospital, Our Island Home, the police, and every other business can’t hire enough people, or pay them, or house them. According to the town planners, “Nantucket has good problems. Other towns wish they had our problems.” I suppose as long as Surfside Road has Defender 90s with five beach chairs hanging off the backs, we will keep muddling through. I am in the same position as everyone else; I pray for September. Meantime, while the outrageous has become the new normal, I am running my engine, waiting in traffic, and doing what I can to keep the invoices going out and the checks coming in. But it’s outrageous.

look with a frequent and wonderful deep laugh.” He and Steve would dig for quahogs with sharp-tined metal rakes, but Tuna’s catch could never rival Oscar’s. “I swear he could dig quahogs in a bathtub. What a great man he was!” A new hobby can sometimes be as daunting as it is exciting. But on Nantucket, we’re lucky to have loads of friendly, helpful, and experienced anglers and some of the best tackle shops we’ve ever visited. “The folks working in the shops all fish avidly, so they do a great job getting new fishermen pointed in the right direction. My go-to lure with my customers is the Island-X Hellfire popper, made by the amazing Nick Whitbeck. Casts like a dream, attracts and catches a variety of fish. Plus, folks get to see the fish attack the lure on the surface—so exciting!” If you ask nicely, Steve might even play you a song. He’s a man of many talents and wears many hats. Previously he was a police detective for the Nantucket Police Department. “I loved it,” Steve says, “it just seemed like stupid things happened in front of me, and I just did a really good job.” He’s written a novel tentatively titled Siren’s Song that we hope to see on bookshelves soon. “I would love to publish it. I looked into self-publishing,” he explained, “but then I went fishing.” What’s more, he is an excellent singer and songwriter. His music is fantastic: a light, fun approach to blues. Yet he still remains humble: “To call me a musician is an insult to musicians. I’m a wannabee who has gold medal skills in self-promotion. I can put people in seats but truly need to be surrounded by real musicians to not look like the talentless hack that I really am!” Earlier this summer, he performed several times at Children’s Beach for the Sunday Concert

Tuna’s favorite fishing spot is Great Point, which is exactly where he guided us. “It’s pristine and wellmanaged by the Trustees of Reservations. There’s a variety of fishing spots to try.” After an hour or two of casting, laughing, and having fun, the only thing we caught were memories. But like Steve said: “It’s still one of the most beautiful places on Nantucket, so how upset can you really get?” He’s the ideal guide for children who’ve never tried surfcasting: he’s patient and encouraging. “Seeing a kid catch their first fish is magical. My main mantra when fishing with kids is to make sure that the trip is a positive experience for the kids every single time. I do my level best to set realistic expectations with parents as to the physical demands of surfcasting. I’d rather not book a trip than to have a kid soured for life by a bad fishing experience. So far, so good!” If you’re not comfortable with casting, worry not: there’s a lot more to fishing on Nantucket than a hook. “Not every type of fishing involves rods and reels. Nantucket has an abundance of quahogs, hard shell clams that live in the shallow areas around the island.” Steve made a habit of this hobby from an early age. “It seemed that once or twice each summer I’d end up on a trip with Oscar Bunting, a commercial fisherman and distant relative.” Oscar was a big, strong man, straight out of central casting for the role of a haggard old man of the sea. “He was a strong, strong guy with forearms that rivaled Popeye. He had a steely look in his eyes that told you he was a serious man but he softened that

Steve has a lot to be grateful for on his island home. “If I had 24 hours left, I think I’d grab my two dogs and go to Sanford Farm and do the long walk out there and back. There’s no place that’s more serene to me. A lot of times I’m playing my harmonica and working on a song.” Because of all this, Steve is forever grateful for all his guides, teachers, and all the friends and fisherman, moments and memories that helped him find his path. “How do you repay all of those who helped you along the way? The only thing to do is to try to share what you’ve been taught or perhaps figured out. Pass it on to the next generation.” “Remember that fishing is about so much more than hauling your catch up on the shore. It’s about the drive out to your best spot, talking with your fishing partner about whatever comes to mind. It’s about the moon and the tide. It’s about the phosphorescence in the water or the shooting stars that you often see. It’s the strategy you employ to pick the right lure. It’s about the big one that spit the hook in the wash. Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship. Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer. SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally. Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

BAY & POND BEACHES Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities. Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
