We’ve been holding our Nantucket Photo Contest for more than a quarter century, but never have we had a year like 2020! With fewer visitors, stay-at-home guidance, no major events, and people working longer hours with smaller staffs, we weren’t sure what number and type of photo submissions to expect. We should not have worried! More night shots were entered, several of them are stunning! And we received many photos of island sunrises and sunsets. Overall, the photos were more contemplative than submissions from most years: there was less obvious, unbridled joy, but we are confident that those types of shots will return. Shutterbugs from 16 states across the US entered. There may have been more states represented, but many participants forgot to tell us their addresses. They traveled to Nantucket from closer to home—most from the Northeast corrider, and many more entries than usual came from Nantucket residents. But Kansas, California, Michigan, and Texas were represented, as was the UK. All but one participant sent us digital photos submitted by email to us at ackphotocontest@gmail.com. The one person who brought us prints has entered every year, and her photos have a fun and endearing local flavor: thank you, Annie! This year’s winning photo of the Nantucket Windmill draped with an American Flag was taken by David Long of Shrewsbury, MA, who honeymooned here on Nantucket in 1983 and returns with his wife as often as they can. Judges loved the colors and the composition and felt the meaning (though the image meant different things to different judges) was spot-on for 2020. Our second-place winner was taken by Robert Borneman of Houston, Texas. Judges like the colors and the angle of his view of daffodils blooming in front of Sankaty Light. Nearly 400 of the photos entered are posted on the Insider’s Guide to Nantucket: Nantucket.net, just click on the banner link on the home page. To the many amateur photographers who did not receive a prize or honorable mention: don’t give up, there’s always another chance to win — we’re already accepting entries for the 2021 Nantucket Photo Contest. Email your high resolution photos of Nantucket Island (in all seasons) and depicting Nantucket life to ackphotocontest@gmail.com Check for your photo entry online at Nantucket.net or at YesterdaysIsland.com. Your Nantucket photo may appear on a cover next season or in a blog post, and follow us on Instagram @nantucketinsider

Doing What They Do Best

The Artists Association of Nantucket has spent its 75th anniversary year doing what it does best: supporting local artists, teaching, preserving the legacy of Nantucket artists, and enriching all our lives by sharing art. Despite the many and unusual challenges of 2020, AAN has successfully pivoted to accomplish their missions during the global pandemic by creatively combining in-person exhibits with digital, streamed, and televised events and displays. Even their annual gala was successful reimagined in July as the 2020 At Home Dinner and Auction. On Sunday, October 11, their next big event will be held: AAN’s Wet Paint 2020. The pandemic pivot for this popular annual fundraiser is to hold an in-person preview at Bartlett’s Farm of the artwork that will then be auctioned off online from October 11 through October 14. All work in the Wet Paint/Fresh Work event is either freshly finished or never before shown. The display of paintings, ceramics, woodcarvings, and photography will be open to the public, free of charge, in the covered greenhouse at Bartlett’s from 10 am to 4 pm. Pandemic restrictions must be followed by anyone visiting, so wear your face-coverings and use the hand-sanitizer. All bidding for the work by more than 70 artists in this year’s Wet Paint event

will be done online: go to NantucketArts.org and look for the link. No in-person bidding will be accepted at Bartlett’s Farm, though there will be digital links to scan next to the works of art. Winning bidders will be notified on Thursday, October 15, and they may arrange to pick up their art on-island or speak to the Artists Association to arrange to have the art shipped. AAN has been offering their popular classes and workshops at the Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive. The next session of classes begins on November 1, and staff will soon post the offerings at NantucketArts.org. Instruction is in-person with safety protocols that include wearing masks, extra sanitizing, safe sharing and no sharing of materials, and social distancing. With reduced enrollment due to pandemic guidance, AAN has added extra class sections to accommodate as many students as possible. “It’s like getting a semi-private lesson for the price of a group lesson,” commented Elizabeth Buccino, Director of Youth Programming. This fall, thanks to a grant from the Nantucket Golf Club Fund, the Artists Association is able to offer a 25% discount off all Youth Classes. A few scholarships for adults may also be available. To inquire, call Nantucket artist G.S. Hill works en plein air on 508-228-0722. his Wet Paint/Fresh Works painting for the AAN's October event.

The Season of Change

Oct. 1-Nov. 18, 2020

Page 5

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Fall on Nantucket usually heralds the slowing down of life on-island. Businesses change their hours, restaurants close for a few days every week, and the ferries have reduced schedules. During a typical fall, the rhythm of the island shifts from the manic excitement of summer to school schedules, Friday night football games, and making plans for winter travel. This year, like everything else, fall is far from typical. There are more people on-island than ever, businesses are staying open longer to salvage the season, and school‌well, as a working parent, I won’t even touch that one. But one thing hasn’t changed: nature still moves forward. There is still a lot of autumn magic on Nantucket. Right now we are in the golden months of fall, when some of the days can still have a summer quality— good enough for boating, biking, fishing, and maybe a swim—while the nights are cool and sleeping is much easier. If you are new to this time of year on-island, welcome to fall on Nantucket! Here are some ways we can enjoy Nantucket nature this fall.

WILDFLOWERS ABOUND

Fall is the season for asters. Many of our showy asters are blooming now. I’ve written before about the yellow goldenrods (all 15 species of them on-island!) which are excellent nectar sources for migrating monarch butterflies and other pollinators. Goldenrods (Solidago ssp.) can be found all over the island, so almost any trail will do to check out their diversity. Check out all the various plumes and leaves. While they may all look similar, they are uniquely adapted to various habitats and therefore the bog goldenrod can be found mostly in wetlands and on the edges of wetlands, while the seaside goldenrod has tough waxy leaves allowing it to proliferate in the sandy environments near the beach. Aster blossoms appear “daisy-like which are called composite flowers. Composite blossoms are actually two types of flowers. Disc flowers form the flower head’s “eye, while ray flowers look like petals on a simpler flower. Many purple, white, and a few pink species come into bloom now. Late Purple Aster (Symphyotrichum patens) has purple ray flowers and yellow disk flowers. The leaves are rough, clasping the stem like little cat tongues. The Bushy American Aster (Symphyotrichum dumosum), is like a tiny bunch of small, white daisies and is common along the coastal plain. These are just a few examples. Go into any semi-grassy area or low shrubs and there will be many more to explore.

FALL COLOR

When we think of “leaf-peeping as a fall activity, we usually think of slow drives in Vermont or New Hampshire. And while Nantucket may not boast the colors of the northern states, we still host pockets of fall color if you know where to look. The tupelo trees (Nyssa sylvatica) of Squam Swamp, Masquetuck, and others turn a bright red in fall. The American beech trees (Fagus grandifolia) of similar wet habitats can be yellowy-copper in fall. My two favorite fall colors on Nantucket are not from trees, but vines. The five-leaved Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is one of the earliest fall colors turning bright purplish-red before the leaves fall off the vines. Similarly, poison ivy vines (Toxicodendron radicans) turn one of the sharpest shades of red in autumn. Driving up Milestone Road, you’d think the street was lined with red maple trees, but it’s simply the large poison ivy vies growing up and around the pine trees of the State Forest that give the road edge its fall colors. Other shades of red can be seen in the black huckleberry shrubs that can turn a crimson shade. Non-native invasive species such as burning bush (Euonymus alatus) also turn color, but are generally relegated to private yards or plantings in commercial landscaping.

CRANBERRIES

The Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF), unfortunately, had to cancel the popular cranberry festival this year due to restrictions around COVID-19. Even so, there are still many ways to enjoy the cranberries throughout the fall. In October NCF is offering small group cranberry harvest tours. You can sign up your family at nantucketconservation.org. That’s even better than waiting in line for the hay ride. You can also visit some of the bogs on your own and take in the natural continued on page 21

What the Heart Needs by Robert P. Barsanti

Sarah Leah Chase and I are having a difficult fall. As is the rest of the island, the country, and the world. We aren’t running for election, fighting wildfires, or marching in the streets. We are only lolling about the kitchen, sharpening knives, tidying the flour containers, and watching the tomatoes age. Our hands are hungry. Sarah and I like to cook, and autumn, historically, has been a great time to feed people on-island. The light fails in the early evening, the candles get lit for dinner, and clams casino hit the table. The best vegetables have ripened while the pickers have left Bartlett’s. You pay your money and fill a paper bag with tomatoes and corn from the field. Then, that night, everyone had Tomato Pie. Or, even better, you go wading in the cooling water and pull out scallops or clams in the daylight, then serve them in the evening. Sarah and I have a great gremolata for that. Cooking keeps me out of the streets. You stand in the kitchen, get the heat going, mix some herbs and oils together, bake a little, sauté some more, and you have created something. It may not be the sort of art that you hang on a wall or a stick in a bookcase, but it is still a creation, which, generally, people thanked me for. After they drank the wine. In my early years on Nantucket, when cable was new, the movie theaters were closed, and the Internet was a rumor, dinner parties were an adult entertainment where you could talk to each other without shouting. We met on Thursday nights, when everyone was on-island and the chaos was coming to a close. Sarah and I made lasagnas, apple cakes, chowders, and any other page in the cookbook that is currently stained. Even in some tiny galley kitchens, tucked into guest houses and rental basements, Sarah and I made some nice meals. Then we got old. We got married, had kids, found other jobs, moved off, and filled the time with digital diversions. Time raced away, followed by the Paw Patrol sirens. But I still cook. continued on page 25

by C. Oscar Olson Before European settlers arrived on Nantucket, the island was inhabited by the indigenous Wampanoag people. They numbered in the thousands and thrived not only due to their cultivation of corn and beans, but because of the richness of the environment around them. With the convenience of mass production and modern agriculture, it’s easy to forget about these prolific plants and wild foods that sustained humans for countless generations. There’s a bounty to be had in your back yard and beyond: the key is to know what you’re looking for. There are lots of locals who take full advantage of the forests and fields, sands and seas, and Nantucket’s Seth Engelbourg is one of them. A trained ecologist with a masters in Environmental Education, Seth works with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation as a naturalist educator and program manager. Passionate about the hobby and a natural side of New England, he has some important advice for beginning foragers: “You should never eat anything from the wild that you are not 100% sure of. It is best to start with a trained mentor and a handy guidebook.” He recommends Wild Plants I Have Known… and Eaten by Russ Cohen, an award winning author, environmentalist, and Massachusetts native. The book focuses on New England and is the perfect companion to both beginners and experts. There are also digital tools like GoBotany, curated by the Native Plant Trust, which features a vast collection of photos and facts on New England’s native plants at gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org. Though his list is long, much of what Engelbourg is after varies in availability from season to season and from year to year. “The nice thing about many of these foods is that they're available throughout different times of the year,” he says, “in seasons when I'm feeling ambitious, I'll make a harvest calendar.” Compared to the mainland, things tend to ripen later in our cooler climate, and some don’t stay ripe for very long, meaning flexibility is necessary with your estimations. Since nearly half the island is set aside as conservation land, there are lots of places to look. Wild fruits are probably the easiest place to start your foraging fun. Blueberries, huckleberries, and fox grapes are common and can be enjoyed raw or in preserves, pies, sauces, and more. Though the flavor of the Fox Grape is considered to be too potent for wine making, they are nice for a nibble on your hike, preserving in jams and jellies, or juicing. These are all also delicious in sweet sauces and reductions. Fresh grapes freeze well and the leaves are edible, too. Try them in salads to enjoy their bitter, citrusy flavor, or blanch some for your own homemade Dolma. Rose hips, abundant islandwide, are hard to the touch and tart on the tongue. It is estimated that contain 4 to 40 times the the vitamin C as in oranges and have been used for centuries as a natural remedy to a number of ailments, including scurvy on long whaling voyages. From preventing and treating colds, stomach issues and intestinal diseases, weight loss, high blood pressure, even topically on stretch marks, they are truly a super-food. Though it is most commonly found dried in teas, the cranberry-like flavor of the rose hip has many other applications in the kitchen. They make for a brightly flavored spread not unlike marmalade, sweet and versatile syrups, even rose hip ice cream and rose hip wine. They are also fine to eat raw, though most folks find continued on page 11

are many other local wild edibles that I have sampled at one point or another,” Engelbourg recalls. “It's a lifelong journey, but connecting to your wild food resources is a beneficial endeavor.” Foraging can provide an exciting new connection with the wilds around us, and I, for one, can’t wait to start exploring. There are a few things to be careful of while on your food finding missions. Always avoid trespassing on private property. Instead, stick to public land or conservation areas that are open to the public, and get permission when you might need it. Take measures to protect yourself from ticks and other biting bugs, too. Though DEET is a tried and true repellant, there are a growing number of all natural sprays and lotions proving to be just as effective. And remember to watch where you walk. Poison ivy is prevalent on the island, and much like the plants you are searching for it can often be hiding in plain sight. Lastly, it is of the utmost importance to keep your harvesting ethical. Never take everything from one plant or one area. Engelbourg closes: “taking just a bit from multiple plants or places ensures that resources remain available for reproduction and wildlife.” For more of Seth's recipes using ingredients foraged from around our island, visit YesterdaysIsland.com

One of Seth Engelbourg’s recipes for foragers 2 cups fresh rose (Rosa rugosa) petals 1 cup water 1 cup white sugar 1. Ethically harvest at least 2 cups of fresh rose petals. Ensure that you have permission of the landowner to forage. Gather petals in a way so that you only remove a few flowers from each plant, while allowing the majority to stay in bloom. This helps preserve the resource for pollinators and maintains the plant’s ability to fruit/reproduce. 2. Rinse petals in clean water and let dry. 3. Prepare a 1:1 simple syrup with the water and sugar in a saucepan. Once the sugar dissolves reduce heat to a simmer. 4. Add in rose petals and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to steep for 10 additional minutes. 5. Strain the syrup through a fine mesh sieve into a glass jar or bottle and let cool.

beauty. The Windswept Cranberry bogs off of Polpis Road will be undergoing some major restoration work over the next several years. Go for a walk now around the remnant bogs (which are no longer in production), and check out the changes as they occur in the coming months. Even though most people think of cranberry bogs as agriculture and cranberries as a food product, cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon and Vaccinium oxycoccos) are a native part of the Nantucket flora. Naturally, they can be found as part of the biodiversity of bogs, fens, and marshes. Here is a historical tidbit from a 2015 YI article by Amy Jenness, “Native Americans harvested the tart berries for both culinary and medicinal purposes and may have taught the English settlers how to use them. The wet bogs where cranberries like to grow helped sustain islanders during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, when all trade with Nantucket was prevented by both the British and the Patriots. Islanders were close to starving by the end of both those wars, and Nantucketers harvested what they could from the land and sea and kept themselves warm by burning peat from the bogs.” The NCF website also has lots of cranberry fun facts and videos from harvests over the years. This is a great educational tool for those home-schooling!

FALL FARMS

Speaking of food, the farms on Nantucket are in full harvest mode. The sweet corn and tomatoes may be done for the season, but now is officially “decorative gourd season.” Pumpkins aren’t even the best of it. Fall and winter squashes abound. Perfect for pies, soups, and other autumn creations to warm your kitchens and your bellies. There are also plenty of other late-season harvests like carrots, potatoes, a plethora of greens, and herbs. Don’t forget to pick up your mums and other fall favorites to decorate for the season!

you may be able to take advantage of some of the many ways to learn more about the natural world on Nantucket. Many conservation organizations have guided tours of their properties including the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Check their calendars for dates and times. The Nantucket Atheneum regularly has free speakers on a variety of subjects as do the Nantucket Historical Association, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (Science Pub), and others. Keep an eye on Nantucket.net Events Calendar for details. One silver lining of the pandemic is that many more resources are available online than ever before. Now is a great opportunity to take a virtual course through on- and off-island organizations like the Native Plant Trust ( nativeplanttrust.org ) . They have multiple botanical and ecology-based workshops for the New England flora that will have you ready for spring!

GIVE BACK

The Clean Team has done an amazing job of cleaning up parts of the island this season. This all-volunteer group is organized and targeted. The group has scheduled Saturday morning clean-ups through October. There is nothing stopping you, however, from cleaning up as you go. Have a favorite spot? Bring a trach bag next time you go. Sunset at the beach? Check out the wrack line for debris and flotsam that you can tote away. Giving back to our favorite places ensures that they are at their best for the next nature enthusiast, child, or even you on your next visit. Fall is a season of change: of dampening down and readying for the winter ahead. Let’s look to nature for clues about how to enjoy nature right now, how to squeeze the last bits of the growing season out, and enjoy what is at-hand while we can. Soon it will be colder and darker. And according to the Farmer’s Almanac (if you go for that type of long-range forecasting), we will be in for a snowy winter.

In our current slow motion apocalypse, The Whalers are far more likely to lose to the Vineyard than I am to feed stew to a table of guests. The hard season is upon us, with its winds, waves, and currents. In the dark and chilly air, we can’t have a party indoors. Worse still, should I decide to make a seafood lasagna for the family, the refrigerators that would keep the leftover lunches are closed. The muffins, the cookies, and the scones stay home and pile up on plates and in the freezer. As the kitchen fills with leftovers, the shopping trips slow and then stop. I have had to fold up my “Kiss the Cook” apron and leave my sourdough starter in the back of the refrigerator, behind the capers and the fish oil. Nonetheless, in this time when we can’t expect help from anyone else, we need to find ways to help ourselves. No politician, no banker, no client will rescue us from the coming season: we cannot wait for saviors. Moreover, we can’t save each other, as we once did. Can’t bring the casserole over to the sick people, can’t deliver party plates to the grieving, can’t leave candy at the hospital. Our own community is behind a mask, behind a door, at the end of road: the Cheers Bar is closed, and there is nowhere to go. The football games have been cancelled, the churches are on Zoom, and the tavern is dark. Our holidays have been wrapped in paper and put under the stairs. Halloween (the finest Nantucket holiday) has been put back in the box, Thanksgiving is unthinkably dangerous, and Stroll has been cancelled. The election, the economy, the disease move through our sky like storm fronts. We can stay outside and curse the sky, or we move inside, get into the kitchen, and cook. Even if I am the only one I nourish, I need to be fed. My hands need to eat more than my stomach. Sarah Leah Chase (and my mother in law) remind me that you can’t cook from the living room. I have found, that, if I want to avoid fires or floods, I need to stay in the kitchen and ignore the rest of the house. Should I step in on Below Decks or a Patriots game, then something will get crispy or gray and the smoke alarm will go off. If I confine myself to the square feet of the kitchen and the blaze of the burners, everything will generally turn out all right (if you put extra sauce on it). The world pulls us from the kitchen. The news, flashing and tweeting, sits exploding in the corner. In order for me to sleep through the night and smile through my morning, I need to stay focused in the kitchen. The world and national news has become, great, terrible, and stupefying. I am not arguing for ignorance. I care about the kids in cages at the border, about the protests in Seattle, about the melting ice in Greenland. But round-the-clock cable news, supplanted by instantaneous Internet news, can draw you into a low grade fever of outrage and frustration in the living room. I can’t bear witness to all of the horrors of the world AND make dinner. In the coming season, we need to eat with our hands. We need to make, and build, and strengthen whatever we have inside us. We need to take hold of the tools that we have at hand, not at a distance, and use those tools to bake, to serve, to feed. Our hands make what our hearts need.

Featured Restaurant: The Beet

Never Miss a Beet by C.Oscar Olson

Celebrating their second summer season on South Water Street, Amy Young and Felino Samson have continued to create something superbly special. Featuring family-friendly, delicious dining in an easygoing atmosphere, their menu is filled with food that is as fantastic as it is fun. To put it simply: The Beet is not to be missed! Though they are certainly casual and fast for takeout lunch and dinner, dining at The Beet has become better than ever. Comfortable and quiet outdoor seating is new this summer on the pedestrian walkway leading to Easy Street, and we were lucky enough to find a table there the night we dined. This year, The Beet has gotten even more creative with custom cocktails, but we had to start with our favorite option that everyone can enjoy. They’re no doubt making lemonade with all the lemons 2020 has brought, but let’s not forget about the limes. The glowingly pink Beet Limeade is electric on Arroz Caldo the eyes and on the palate. It’s slightly sweet and terrifically tart with a subtle kiss of earth from beet in the background. The Beet boasts several hand-picked wines to choose from, be it by the glass or the bottle, along with sake and craft brews. We had to try their take on the classic summer sipper, the Florida Orange Spritz (cover photo). It mixes sparkling Spanish Cava with tangy blood orange juice and a dash of bitters. Garnished with an orange slice, this cocktail Veggie Dumplings

comes alive with gradient shades of pink and orange and a delightful, fruity fizz. Their Sake-rita (cover photo) combines Funaguchi Kukusui Gold rice wine with fresh lime and a touch of ginger. This new take on a classic is round up Smoked Chili Duck Wings front with a bright spice on the finish. Like the rest of the menu, the appetizers are all alluring and eclectic. These and every dish is created from scratch by chef Felino Samson, using his Filipino heritage and world travels to inspire every aspect. As owner Amy Young puts it, “Felino has an incredible palate for flavor,” and we couldn’t agree more. Arroz Caldo, a Filipino chicken and rice soup, makes an excellent light lunch or the best beginning to your dinner. It’s hearty, rich, and creamy without using cream and has generous chunks and shreds of all white meat chicken. Complex flavors come from ginger, floral saffron, scallion, a squeeze of lemon, and a dash of fish sauce for an umami finish. Chef Samson creates a showy lace-like crisp by frying off rice flour and water before his Veggie Dumplings hit the pan. The dumplings are full of flavor and so satisfying yet contain only kale and corn. They are served atop a bed of red and green Middle East Salad cabbage for crunchy contrast of

color and texture. If we had it our way, the Smoked Chili Duck Wings would be available for delivery around the clock. Our favorite first by far, these divine drumsticks come coated in a spicy-sweet sambal honey. They’re sticky, savory, spicy, meaty, and so deliciously messy. The offerings are kept as fresh as the ingredients they’re cooked with at The Beet, using the best of what’s fresh and available, The Hulk so be ready for new flavors as we continue into Autumn. Even with a slight October chill in the air, it’s warm enough to dine outside, and The Beet will soon be adding heaters for the comfort of their patio diners. They also have some indoor dining, and their full menu is available for takeout. A salad is never just a salad on South Water Street. The Middle East brings all the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean to your plate with housemade herbed falafel over tabouleh with crisp romaine, red ripe cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, peppery radish, and a satisfying crunch from pita chips. Flecks of mint and a savory sesame za’atar dressing coat every bite, and it’s finished with a golden turmeric tahini drizzle. The Hulk looks more like Bruce Banner until you dig through the mixture of fresh and crispy kale to reveal layers of charred broccoli, crispy sweet Brussels sprouts, quinoa, and herb-infused green rice. We loved the contrast of warm and cool, fresh and baked, and the miso parmesan caesar dressing topped with the toasty nuttiness of sunflower seeds. Portions are plentiful, so if you have any leftovers like we had, they travel well and are great the next day. Amy likes enjoying The Hulk for breakfast by adding an egg on top. A delicious and Korean BBQ Quesadilla

Oct. 1-Nov. 18, 2020

nutritious breakfast in a flash, the jammy yolk melts into the herbed rice and enhances every morsel. Easy adjustments like this can made to almost any menu item, so make your salad a wrap, ask for a different dressing, or swap out a side. We were instantly taken by the mouthwatering aroma of the Korean BBQ Quesadilla as soon as the dish hit the table. Succulent Brioche Beignets shredded short rib, cheddar cheese, and pickled red onion were all wrapped in toasty scallion pancake. Drizzled with a tangy sweet sauce, a forkful of the pineapple slaw between bites cut through the richness of this entree. A new take on a steak dinner, the Bistro Steak Salad (cover photo) was one we’d order again and again. A splendidly thick 9-ounce Prime New York Strip was perfectly prepared to our order and drizzled with a gleaming whole grain Asian mustard sauce. Served alongside is tender watercress over a warm potato salad of pickled red onion, julienned radish, verdant green beans, scallions, parsley, and golden brown fried shallots. Every component made each bite unique, and we couldn’t get enough. Whether it’s with your morning coffee or at the end of a delicious dinner, there’s never a bad time for the Brioche Beignets. Served hot and fresh every time, they’re light as a feather with a thin, crisp, sugar-dusted exterior giving way to a fluffy, doughy middle. We dare you to eat just one! Other dessert options weren’t mentioned on the menu, so it’s best to ask about what sweet endings might be in store for you. Their Rice Pudding was a dream and we were so glad we got to try it. Layers of toothsome jasmine and forbidden rice were topped with a luscious vanilla custard, providing a touch of delicacy to the texture throughout. Though the challenges keep on coming in 2020, Amy and Felino persevere by putting their all into every dish. Everything was incredible when we dined with them last year—but somehow, this year, they made The Beet even better! We look forward to watching The Beet continue to grow and adapt to our island community, and we can’t wait to taste the flavors that Felino and Amy cook up next.

NHA Plans Reimagined Fall & Winter Festivals

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is reimagining its plans for two of its beloved holiday festivals this season, with both being slightly adjusted to adhere to safety protocols and allow for more viewing time for visitors. The 22th annual Festival of Wreaths will kick-off the NHA’s holiday offerings, featuring an array of wreaths beautifully crafted by the community. Visitors may bid on their favorite wreaths in an auction to benefit the NHA's year-round outreach efforts, with bidding opening a week early on Monday, November 9 and continuing to Monday, November 23. This will allow for two weeks of viewing time compared to only five days in previous years. Wreaths will be on view in the McCausland Gallery at the Whaling Museum, but all bidding will be held online for safe and touch-free bidding with easy to access QR codes next to each wreath. The 27th annual Festival of Trees, which transforms the Whaling Museum into a festive winter wonderland, will also open earlier on Friday, November 27, and will run through the end of December to allow for more viewing time and for visitors to enjoy during Nantucket Noel. Neither festival will begin with the usual Preview Parties due to safety regulations during the pandemic. Both of these festivals will be free to the year-round community, thanks to generous support of the Festival of Wreaths and Festival of Trees lead sponsor, Marine Home Center. The NHA is grateful for the involvement and support of the many individuals and organizations that contribute to the success of these holiday traditions, including Lauren and Neil Marttila, 2020 festival chairs. “It is an honor to chair the 2020 Festival of Trees and Festival of Wreaths, which are extremely special island traditions,” says Neil Marttila. “It is a joy to see the creativity of our island come to life through the wreaths and trees—and we are especially thrilled the Nantucket Historical Association can continue these traditions this year. We all need a little extra joy in 2020.” For more information about each holiday offering and other programs and events at the Nantucket Historical Association, visit or call (508) 228-1894.

Leave only footprints...

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

You’re on Nantucket — now visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Jeeps rented from Young’s and from Affordable Rentals have the required vehicle permits — all you need to do is add a day pass that you can purchase from Young’s, from Affordable, or from the Gatehouse. ttor.org/ccwr
