This Sunday, August 21, the eagerly anticipated Rainbow Parade will sail around Brant Point, preceeding Nantucket’s 50th Annual Opera House Cup Regatta. It’s typical for twenty or more of these little boats to participate in the parade. Some years ago, the parade date fell on a stormy day, complete with 25-miles-per-hour winds. Still, one stalwart sailor mustered courage and strength, getting her miniature sailboat out on the water. Since the mid 1800s, the catboat has been a favorite on Nantucket for leisure sailing and for teaching children how to sail. When the Nantucket Yacht Club was founded in 1906, they organized races and encouraged members to buy boats 508-228-0272

A Talk with Tim Talks Books by Suzanne Daub I recently talked with Tim of Tim Talks Books about two more author talks that he is hosting this week. These authors have written “stories that are very powerful for very different reasons,” he explained. And he’s excited to share with audiences the conversations they’ll have in the Great Hall of the Atheneum. At 6 pm on Thursday, August 18, he will converse with Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks about her newest novel Horse. Tim describes the book as “a continued on page 18

Nantucket Island’s Bountiful Biodiversity
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Nantucket is known for many things, and, for many, the island’s natural beauty rises is top of the list. This year, the Nantucket Land Council and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation again teamed up for the July BioBlitz—a month long treasure hunt cataloging all living things on Nantucket. We’re reflecting this week on what we found during the 3rd annual BioBlitz, highlighting some of our favorite species. We’ll also see which made the number one spot for most observed plant, animal, and insect and who was our top observer. For those who didn’t participate, you can read an article I wrote last month (yesterdaysisland.com/count-everything/) which has more of the “how-to” details. Basically, a BioBliz is a mad dash in a specified area to catalog as many species as possible. The 2022 NLC/LLNF BioBlitz sought to document the biodiversity of Nantucket during the month of July, when the growing season is at its peak—a perfect month for a BioBlitz. Using the iNaturalist app, participants took photos of any living thing and uploaded them. Sometimes people knew what they were looking at and listed the identification. Other photos were entered as unknowns and later identified by experts and naturalists in the field, strengthening observations to “research grade.”Despite the almost complete lack of rain, this past July was a perfect month for a BioBlitz. Many plants were blooming, fruiting, and just growing in the summer sunshine. Nestling birds were fledging, insects were hatching, turtles were nesting, and the marine life was popping! There was so much to see and record. Records are still being compiled as participants continue to enter their observations. As of this week’s press date, there are already 1,680 observations of

The Show Is Coming to a Close by Robert P. Barsanti
The two girls sat at the bench, waiting for the NRTA. One held her chin on her fist, the other leaned back and took in the passing traffic. They had been tanned, bleached a bit, and had absorbed as much of the island as they could. They wore jeans, strappy little sandals, and carried three suitcases each. Their summer was ending. The tide turns after the Pops. Suddenly, in the middle of August, the waitresses and painters are called back to the soccer fields of Cornell and St. Laurence. The ice cream line gets longer, the beaches lose another lifeguard, and another set of luggage rolls onto the high-speed boat. In a week, the families will load up the Yukon and roll it onto the early morning ferry. The schools south of the Mason-Dixon Line have already brought Billy and Betsy back to the classroom. The prep schools and colleges will be next: Jennifer and James will report for pre-season, outfit their rooms, and empty the sand from their shoes. And then, finally, at Labor Day, the schools in the northern corners of the country will return, and the island will be left to the members and their guests. The beaches will clear and the stop signs will be a lot less popular. For those of us lucky enough to call the Sandbar home, all of this comes with a long exhale. The infrastructure of the island, from the people to the pavement, was not built for the stress the first two weeks of August bring. As the boats round Brant Point, the shadow of February appears in the cool light of August. The show is coming to a close. The boat takes them away just as Nature is peaking. The bluefish and stripers are deep around the bar, the tuna bar is serving, and the sharks are still posing for their Instagram reels. The tomatoes have grown corpulent, the corn dense and sweet, and the pickers are on their way to Hyannis. Soon, the pick your own tomatoes signs will be out. The whirling ladies (and men) of the Caribbean are shuffling and whispering in the wings, far off over the cerulean horizon. The surfing waves pace into shore. It’s a bad time to need reservations to ride the ferry away. But those of us who call the Sandbar home have a certain sand-blindness to the island. We see the traffic, and the closures, and the removals only against the backdrop of our own sepia-toned history on-island. This new house replaced the one that Flint and Corky had, and I just don’t like the look of it. We mourn the cutting of trees and the loss of a familiar view. Our visitors don’t see that. The girls who are waiting with their luggage don’t have fond and familiar memories of Thirty Acres (which was behind them). Natives do. In our history-infused vision, we see everything (and everyone) that was once there, but we miss the present. When we pull onto the beach at Fortieth, we don’t think about how rare that is; we wonder why there are so many Connecticut plates. When we drive five miles along a sand road in the center of the island to find an empty beach at Madaquecham, we aren’t amazed at the miracle (of foresight and conservation). We just see all of the new houses and fresh shingles. The visitors see the unique and glorious present. The visitors walk down to the shore, dig their toes into the sand, and let the waves wrap around their ankles. page a Nantucket tradition. established 1982 Private Charters Per Person Fares Captain James Genthner Slip #1015 • Straight Wharf EndeavorSailing.com508-228-5585

Maudjeani, known as Mo to his friends and family, presented a standing room only concert in March of this year that featured some of his new music, then under development. During the ensuing months, he has continued creating new compositions and is working with Floyd Kellogg in the NCMC’s recording studio to produce a 10-trackBeforecompilation.headingoffto New Haven University to study music production on a Nantucket Golf Club scholarship, Mo decided to hold another concert to express his gratitude to the Nantucket community and, in his words, to “celebrate everything good that has happened to me since coming to Nantucket.” The show will be a showing of support and an expression of thanks. While heading off-island to study, Mo knows Nantucket and his experiences here will forever shape his music and artistic expression. “Things never go away, because everything that happens leaves a piece withing you. Nothing ever leaves us.” This sentiment transcends his thoughts when describing the form his music takes. “My songs are pieces of myself and are a way of finding comfort in the midst of turmoil. Music helps me feel things in a way that I can’t otherwise find feeling.”
The concert is free to the public, but Mo will accept donations that will be forwarded to PASCON, Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket. Following his father’s recent cancer diagnosis, Mo hopes to do more than just provide moral support. He says, “Now there’s not much I can do for my father besides waiting and giving him as much support as I can. I also want to do way more than just that, that’s why I want to dedicate this performance to PASCON.”
Nantucket Community Music Center student and NHS graduate Maudjeani Pelissier will present a farewell concert comprised of original compositions he is currently recording for a new album. The free concert will take place in the Studio Theater of the Nantucket Dreamland, South Water Street on Thursday, August 18 at 8pm.
Free Farewell Concert Dedicated to PASCON
Since 1975, the Nantucket Community Music Center has worked to enrich the cultural life of the island by fostering and supporting music education and performance opportunities for young people and adults. They believe that music has the power to transform individuals and our island as a whole. We envision a community with access to all aspects of music through teaching, learning, and performing.
Anne Marie Bratton is a photo-real artist, who works in oil, graphite, and watercolors. A summer resident of Nantucket Island, she is very active in the community as a patron, board member, and chair of events. While on-island, she often continues to hone her skills by taking classes with local artists. Her 2022 exhibit in the Susan Lister Locke Gallery opens this Friday, August 19, and continues through Labor Day. The Susan Lister Locke Gallery, located on the waterfront at 28 Easy Street, is open daily. In addition to special art exhibits, the shop has a exquisite collection of jewelry, featuring hand-carved turquoise, dazzling diamonds, vibrant gemstones, and crafted 18k gold in earrings, cufflinks, rings, necklaces, charms, and more.

They turn and see sand dunes and sky, but no history. But they see the context that islanders miss. You can’t do this on the Vineyard. You can’t do this in New Jersey. You can’t do this in Europe. For most of our visitors, that moment under the surf-wrapped, sand-sbordered, glowing sky only happens here. So, when they go back to Avon, Akron, or Atlanta, they have in their mind that beach moment lapping at their memory. The sit in traffic, with the windows up and the air-conditioning on, and they wish they were back on the beach at Fisherman’s with a warm beer and a bag of chips. Whenever I am off-island and I tell people that I came from Nantucket, someone tells me about their honeymoon. They don’t complain about the loss of Wing Night, the Fire Chief, or the traffic on Old South Road. Their eyes drift back to a ride out to a lighthouse, an afternoon at Cisco, and evenings at an inn. My aunt and uncle, currently happily embedded in the northern Italian soil like olive trees, still remember their Nantucket honeymoon sixty years ago. On any Sunday morning, sit on Main Street and watch the couples walk hand-inhand. Their memories are not our memories. They have taken our ordinary moments, polished them, and placed them on the shelf.
More often than not, when the honeymooners tell their story, they talk fondly about people who helped them. On the beach Sunday, a deeply tanned Bostonian regaled the kindness and tools a Nantucket guidance counselor helped him with forty years ago. Isky, Augie, Flint, and Frenchie live on in their small favors and handshakes.Toknow, you have to leave. When you take the boat off with three full suitcases and watch Brant Point pass to the left, your Nantucket life ends. The rest of your life, in Boston or Burlington, will send you skidding through the peaks and valleys, but it won’t be ankle deep in wet sand. Every warm Sunday afternoon will remind you of parking at Fortieth Pole in the heat and sparkle of August, in the company of friends and family. The wonder of living on Nantucket is that the mundane is fantastic. When the passengers come out on the deck, toss a penny, and take a picture of the light, they know what they are leaving. You only know what you had when it’s gone.

of the same design to eliminate the need for handicapping. In 1910, the club commissioned the design of a 13-foot catboat as a “one-design” for racing. In 1921, the Yacht Club under Commodore Henry Lang and Vice Commodore Clarence Gennett commissioned a one-design fleet of 16-foot catboats for young members. According to historian Michael Harrison, “it was Gennett’s idea that the boats wear sails of different colors to distinguish them, and the lively effect this created immediately led to the name “Rainbow Fleet.” These 16-foot catboats had issues of maintenance and some difficulties in handling when running before the wind. “Now these big Rainbows were lovely,

Over the decades, there has been casual parading of the Rainbow Fleet. It wasn’t until Alan Newhouse, NCS Founder, came along in the 1980s that the Parade became formalized as an event within the Opera House Cup. He brought the whole Rainbow class of boat back to life. It had almost disappeared on Nantucket in the late 70s. Newhouse sought Parade participants in a creative manner several weeks be-
Harrison states in an article: “The new “Little Rainbows” formed a class of their own sailed entirely by children. A racing report from July 1927 notes, The Little Rainbow Fleet has proved itself a fine class and everyone is proud and happy. Master Cutler won on Wednesday, sailing a fine race and the whole fleet congratulates him. Miss Smith had hard luck with her tiller. Miss Gennett and her brother made a gallant fight but succeeded in coming in second. Miss Helen Wilson won an easy third and hasn’t got over the thrill yet. The poor old Rear Commodore hit a shoal and never came in at all A photograph taken by H. Marshall Gardiner in the late 1920s and released as a postcard in 1930 inspired the concept of a Rainbow Parade. The artistic piece shows ten Rainbows—green, deep yellow, red, old rose, blue, light yellow, and tan—rounding Brant Point. How were the boats so neatly lined up? The boats were actually interconnected and the photographer, along with Vice Commodore Strong, chose a day when waters were very calm. “It was an absolutely perfect day for it. When Marshall Gardiner took his picture,” the late Helen Wilson Sherman explained, “color photography hadn’t really been invented, so the picture was black and white…and when they tinted it, they didn’t know what color the sails were, and mine came out orange instead of green... I was at the head of the parade...everybody’s boat was tied to mine and Byron Coffin towed the 13 boats in the Yacht Club launch—we weren’t sailing. It was a dead calm. And of course all the little sails were straight, and they weren’t fluttering or anything.”

very graceful looking,” reminisced the late Helen Wilson Sherman in a past interview, “but there was no ‘body’ in the stem, so they were quite tippy; they heeled easily in the wind.” In 1927, smaller, lighter catboats were ordered. These Beetle Cats (designed and built by the Beetle Company in New Bedford) were easy for children to handle and very popular throughout New England.
According to Diana Brown, President and CEO of Nantucket Community Sailing, Tall Ship Lynx will shoot her cannon at 9 am on Sunday morning, August 21, “and that will start the parade. We will have an expert on Brant Point identifying the boats as they parade by and a brochure with descriptions and photos of each boat. We are doing a pursuit start this year, which means the slowest and smallest boats start first, beginning at 10:45, so they will have to leave the harbor early in order to get out to the race course on time. The window for the Rainbow Parade is very tight to avoid ferry traffic as much as possible.”
Watching the Rainbow Parade and followed by the magestic wooden boats that sail around Brant Point and out of the harbor on Opera House Cup to compete in this all-wooden, single-hulled classic boat regatta is a beautiful summer spectacle and a Nantucket tradition.

fore each year’s event. Having assembled zipblock bags containing stones for weight and notes for explaining the date and time of the Rainbow Fleet Parade, Alan deposited his messages in every Rainbow he saw in the harbor. Today, the zipblock bag messages are still dropped into boats. The small gesture is representative of inclusiveness. Traditions like these characterize the Rainbow Fleet Parade.During the Rainbow Parade, it’s common for different generations to be sailing in these boats: young kids to grandparents. Many of the Rainbows have been passed from generation to generation. Among the families to originally own the boats were the Pagons, Connells, Bollings, Lovelaces, Sawyers, Churches, Heckers, and Manvilles. Today, more families are active in the Rainbow Fleet Parade.
Insider’s Tip: The Rainbow Parade has a huge following, drawing hundreds to Brant Point to watch and photograph the colorful event. Spectators should plan to arrive around 8:50 am (or earlier). You’ll see the Wooden Boats start to pass Brant Point around 9 am till after 10, and the Rainbow Parade around 9:40 am. Park in town or bike in, stop by Easy Street Cantina (opens at 8 am) or The Corner Table for coffee and a picnic breakfast, and walk to the beach, as parking is very limited. airport

Born and raised in Weyauwega, Wisconsin, it wasn’t until his wedding in June of 2012 that he first set foot on Nantucket Island. “My husband’s family had a house here... when we were looking for a place to marry, James suggested Nantucket: I had never heard of it,” said Tim. “The minute I landed here it felt like home.”After their wedding, Tim and James tied up some loose ends and moved fulltime to Nantucket in 2013. To share his connections with authors is one of reasons Tim hosts his Author Talks, in conjunction with Mitchell’s Book Corner, Nantucket Bookworks, and the Nantucket Atheneum. So far this year, he has had public conversations with Zak Salih, Qian Julie Wang, Gabrielle Zevin, Edafe Okporo, and Elin Hilderbrand. This
Tim’s desire for connection was shared by so many others: “we were all longing for connection (connection was the theme of the 2022 Book Festival) ...I’ve connected with people around the world: it’s one of the joys of social media… “
The evolution of his career to focus on books, authors, and readers is a dream come true. “I think it pulls in so many parts of my personality,” he explained. “I love connecting with authors—being able to connect with an author whose work I respect and then to have a relationship with an author—and I have been trying to make the bookstores here their island homes.”
His online identity as Tim Talks Books came about with the pandemic. Tim and James had just returned from a trip to Australia as pandemic restrictions began. Much of what Tim handled as a marketer was in flux as the global situation and restrictions rapidly changed—the ability for people to shop in-person, the book festival events, it was all uncertain. “We didn’t know what was going to happen,” he explained. “I thought: ‘I could become a book influencer for Nantucket’. I started reaching out to all my author contacts. There are so many people who love books: I wanted to pull in my job with the book stores and the Book Festival and identify myself with the books and the authors...This is my way to share my love of books and to engage with people.”

Books have been his passion from a very early age: “I have loved books before I could even talk...I remember how much joy they brought me as a child... I remember sitting in my parents’ laps and being truly engaged between the pages of a book.” Tim told me he has four or five books with him at all times: “I get something profound out of any book: the beach read someone else might not pick up, the 911 Commission Report... they are complete opposites, but I get something out of each. I just dive into what I’m reading and apply it to my life.”
What is your favorite book so far in 2022? Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. It’s about two people who meet as kids: they grow up to make video games together. This book is one of those books where the author builds a whole world—it feels so real—and she really unpacks what those games were: the toxic masculinity, the racism… But the book is not just about video games; it’s a story about a powerful friendship. I’ve had such amazing friendships in my life, but you don’t often read about that in books. There are so many layers: it’s a book about video games and nothing about video games. This is a passionate book about two friends.”
What are you most looking forward to reading in the second half of 2022? Fredrik Backman wrote the Beartown series, set in a community in northern Sweden—the third in the trilogy (it’s called The Winners) is coming out in October...and Jodi Picoult’s Mad Honey, and Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead. Did you read Hamnet? Maggie O’Farrell’s The Marriage Portrait is due out this fall...and I’m a huge Steven King fan! I’ve been reading Steven King since before I should have been reading Steven King...I read every one of his books that comes out… In September his Fairy Tales is due out—I’m super excited about that one.
week he is inviting everyone to the Atheneum to hear his conversations with Geraldine Brooks and Jennifer Weiner. A number of his previous conversations with authors are posted on YouTube; to listen, follow the link on timtalksbooks.com.
I couldn’t end my recent talk with Tim without asking him some personal questions...

What place do you think books have in our society? I like to think of books as a place we can all come together: as a place where there is no judgement or division. Reading opens our minds to step into someone else’s story. Because of a book you can experience something you otherwise could not, but you can in a book. Books are truly magic—there’s nothing else like reading.” Can books/reading save the world? Yes, I definitely think they could—but we have to allow ourselves to let books do it.
more than 650 species. Those numbers will continue to climb as more records are identified. This year, we had more observers than ever before. Throughout the month, 127 people participated and more than 320 people have identified our Nantucket observations. In the lead, Trish Pastuszak is the clear winner so far with 225 observations of 184 species. And rumor has it she joined the project halfway through the month. Congratulations to Trish! Watch out for next year when Trish joins from the beginning. You can view the results yourself, peruse the species seen as well as project leaderboard here: inaturalist.org/projects/nlc-and-llnf-bioblitz-2022.Amajorityofthespecies found were plants (52%), which isn’t surprising since they are very cooperative photo subjects. Insects made up 20% (130 species). Although I am an ecologist and lover of nature, I wasn’t psyched that 20 different species of arachnids were found. Yes, that’s spiders, but it also includes mites and ticks. The coolest arachnid, and new to me, is the Giant Lichen Orbweaver (Araneus bicentenarius) found by hlshaw (that’s their iNaturalist handle). This orbweaver spider has some pretty amazing camouflage mimicking lichen and blending in perfectly with the bark of a tree. The BioBlitz’s most-observed species was followed throughout the month like a horse race. After different species taking the lead throughout, by the end of the month, there was a 3-way tie between common milkweed, sickle-leaved golden aster, and great mullein. That tracks well with what we’re seeing bloom all around the island. Not surprising, then, the most common insect was the monarch butterfly, seen as both caterpillars and as adult butterflies. These showy, signature species are great targets for documentation.Asexpected, the most common species were the most observed. Other common obserations include osprey, spotted knapweed (an invasive plant), yarrow (last year’s winner), and horseshoe crabs. Some animals, like eastern cottontail had lots of observations, some of which were as roadkill. One of my favorite observations was of Spoonleaf Sundew (Drosera intermedia) by “syrinxed.” It was found off of Stump Pond Meander trail. The spoonleaf sundew is an insectivorous plant which attracts insects by secreting a sugary nectar from the leaf blades which are densely covered with stalked mucilaginous glands. Insects then become ensnared by

the mucilage and, unless they are strong enough to escape, are suffocated or die from exhaustion. The plant then secretes digestive enzymes and later absorbs the resulting nutrient solution to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the plants natural environment. So cool! When looking through the observations, I am amazed by the diversity that people are seeing. I always end up learning a lot, too, about species I’ve never seen before. The Fiery Searcher Beetle (Calosoma scrutator) is a new one for me. It was found by “amymaria” in the Cisco Beach area. The beautiful iridescent rainbow sheen of this beetle made for a stunning image. Looking into it a little more, I learned that this meat-eating beetle is accurately described as “beauty with a bite.” It is commonly called a “caterpillar hunter” and, as the name suggests, they feed on caterpillars and other soft-bodied insects, to the delight of gardeners and landscapers. I am glad however that this wasn’t my encounter. The iNaturalist website had another tidbit to add: “The adult beetle is known to excrete a foul-smelling oil when it is handled. The oil has been described as smelling similar to rotten milk or rancid olive oil.”
Better seen than smelled. For mammals, we only had 8 species, which isn’t surprising given Nantucket’s overall lack of mammals. A favorite observation of the BioBlitz, though, was of an Eastern Mole (Scalopus aquaticus) observed by Danielle O’Dell of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Apparently, during an outdoor staff meeting, the mole poked its head up through the ground in the middle of the Science and Stewardship staff at the NCF office yard. He may not have intended to join the meeting, but he/she has a great headshot on the BioBlitz page: inaturalist.org/observations/127220527.Whenyouhavetime, check out the results for more local sightings of beautiful flowers, charismatic birds, and fascinating insects, among others. Since iNaturalist also has the location (unless it’s a rare species) you can also find out where to go to make some of your own observations. Thanks to all of those who participated for getting out there, making observations, and supporting the Nantucket Land Council and Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Now that the BioBlitz is over, don’t stop observing and documenting. You can use iNaturalist anytime to upload photos and contribute to the information about our island’s biodiversity. For more information about how to use iNaturalist, check them out at inaturalist.org or view this LLNF workshop: youtube.com/watch?v=hbwLjGeHPZk syrinxed

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
