Jack London was America’s most popular writer at the turn of the 20th century, author of more than a dozen books, including Call of the Wild and White Fang. His novel Martin Eden inspired Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Susan Sontag and Upton Sinclair, and many more distinguished authors. 508-228-0272
Eden on Nantucket by C. Oscar Olson
The story is based on London’s autobiographical novel. Set in 1909, it tells the tale of its namesake: a poor, uneducated man of the sea whose path crosses with that of Ruth Morse, a magnetic and intelligent young woman of means. This timeless tale of star-crossed lovers reveals timely themes of class differences and impossible love, the tireless pursuit of the American Dream, and the quest for peace in an unpredictable world. “It’s quintessentially American themes,” says Craven, “pursuit of the American Dream, mad love, and the search for your place in an inconstant world.”

Nantucket is a place like none other. For more than a century it has been a safe-harbor for the arts, and as a result countless beautiful things have blossomed. Endless views and vistas, celebrated summers, and harsh, unforgiving winters translate into verse, poetry, paintings, prose, and plays. The island has also been a beautiful and iconic backdrop for film. Jay Craven, award-winning director, writer, and producer, has found inspiration here since his youth. He has always been drawn to the unique spirit of our island. “I love Nantucket for its welcoming embrace of our work,” he says, “It’s a small, tightly knit community, and more than 100 people are drawn into each of our productions.” His name is well-known in the world of film for low-budget, independent, and award-winning productions. His film, Jack London’s Martin Eden, is ready to be distributed. Filmed entirely on Nantucket Island, the movie premiered at the Nantucket Film Festival—the only film at the 2021 festival that was shot on-island. Audiences will be immersed in the story set at familiar locations like the Jared Coffin House, Thomas Macy House and Warehouse, Quaker Meeting House, Mason’s Hall, the Starbuck mansion at 95 Main Street, and the American Legion Post 82, where island construction coordinator Jacques Zimicki supervised the building of three big sets.

Evening with an Icon of Justice
Witness one of America's greatest stories told from the White Heron Theatre stage by superb storyteller Earl Baker, Jr. Baker transforms into an icon of justice as he tells the story of how Thurgood Marshall, a boy from the backstreets of Baltimore, son of a railroad porter and a teacher, grew up to change history. From arguing the 1954 landmark case Brown v. Board of Education to becoming the first African-American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall's tenacity and advocacy advanced civil rights and paved the way for the young African-American leaders of our future. Baker puts heart and soul into his performance, making this solo show, as described by the New York Times, “absorbing” and “riveting.” The play Thurgood inspires and empowers audiences with the story of a truly great American. Thurgood is presented in a limited engagement by White Heron Theatre: only five more appearances this week: August 25, 28, 29, 30, and 31. Tickets are available at AlsoWhiteHeronTheatre.org.onstagethisweek,August 26 and 27 is Tom Cotter for the White Heron Comedy Club. White Heron Bar opens at 8pm, and the laughs start at 9 pm.

Last Week of August by Robert P. Barsanti I have a kayak. The kayak is a beautiful boat; outfitted with pedals and a rudder, an ocean keel, and two watertight compartments. Once in the ocean, it will glide and keep its line through waves and water. I haven’t used it in years. It sits in a shed, safe, bundled, and dry, and it waits for me. It has waited for me through plumbing emergencies, turnovers, and afternoons dedicated to cable companies. Throughout the heat of July and the crowds of August, the kayak glows in the dim sunlight that penetrates the shed and on the bucket list of my mind.Ionce was a kayaker. I bungie-corded it to the top of my jeep, waiting for the cast-off moment when I could park in a parking lot, drag the boat through the sand, and paddle out to empty spots under the bright blue. It happened. I have photographs.Insummer, I should have time for kayaking. In June, the summer unrolls before us in a long series of unchecked boxes. Then the phone rings and the boxes fill. There’s work; there are guests; there are projects; there is busy-ness. I find that most of my summer boxes get filled in with waiting for someone else to call, visit, or send something. But I still come to the last week of August with whispered questions and recriminations from the shed. No work of great pitch and moment has been created. I did not carve a saint into a cathedral, nor did I conquer the Gauls, nor did I cure cancer. Instead, I mowed some lawns, applied some paint, and waited for the subcontractors to arrive. When I look at my phone, I find that I didn’t take any pictures during the month of July. Perhaps there is nothing more damning in the twenty-first century than having nothing to photograph. I am also a reader, and, like most readers, I have stacks of books. I just finished a book that I bought during Christmas vacation. The rest of the purchases sit in a stack on the porch. I have mysteries, histories, and vital voices for the present. Like the kayak, I have put them in a place where I don’t need to meet theirForeyes.most of the year, I am not the person I want to be, I am the person other people want me to be. Frankly, other people want me to be a better person than I actually am. The guy with the kayak doesn’t go grocery shopping. The man reading in the backyard hasn’t washed the sheets from that house in Tom Nevers, although he could have in between Chapters 33 and 34. The guy in the kayak doesn’t get paid much, lets the cable bill go, and has a lousy credit score. The reader has needed to buy more toilet paper since Friday. My world, and the world my friends, family, and fiduciary partners live in, is greatly improved by the idling of my kayak. In the time that I could be circling the Jetties, invoices have been made, shopping has been completed, and the chicken breasts have thawed and marinated. I have been the friend and father that everyone wanted me to be. Perhaps, even, I am appreciated. But the kayak waits. We are often the people other people wish for. Lifted up in the web of community, we are tugged and hugged by others, and we shape ourselves to be the people they desire. We will get the toilet paper before we need to. We will pay the cable bill the week before it is due, and not after. Everyone we know, who has a strand of that web, will pull us and smile.
August is often described as the “Dog Days of Summer” for multiple reasons. Especially this summer with its endless string of hot days (especially hot for the island) coupled with a drought and record numbers of people. Looking for the positives, there are a lot of amazing things about the second half of August as well. The water is at its peak warmth for swimming, crowds begin to thin, peak wildflower season is starting, and the beach plums are close to ripe. One of my favorite August pastimes is night swimming in the bioluminescence. If you’ve never had the pleasure before, I’ll do my best to describe the experience before getting into the biology of it. There is something truly magical about cooling down in the shallows of the north shore at night and being greeted by the glowing swirls in the water. It’s like a welcoming glow that helps melt all the stress of summer away. If you take a moment to float and look up, you might be treated to the best light show of the year (sorry to the amazing drone show at this year’s Pops Concert). The twinkling lights of the summer sky matched below by the swirling glow of the bioluminescence—it’s a dreamy experience. It’s a pause, if you will, holding summer in place for a moment between the “Dog Days” and the crisp air of fall. This week is the perfect time to try it out. With the new moon on August 27, the dark skies coupled with the luminescent sea should be fantastic! So, what is this glowing stuff anyway? The blueish iridescent glow is actually bioluminescence. Bioluminescence is sometimes referred to as phosphorescence, but the two are not the same. Phosphorescent organisms absorb light from the sun and later give it back. Luminescent organisms, on the other hand, actually produce light through a chemical reaction. The bays of Vieques in Puerto Rico are famous for their light shows, as are beaches in southern California and

Except now. With the pressure of the incoming September in front of us, and the ignored promise of the summer behind us, this week becomes the week when we can drop out of the web. The lawn can grow for another day. Leftover pizza should be good enough for tonight. In the last week of August, the kayak moans its loudest. It remembers the promises of an afternoon in Coskata, a quick jaunt around the jetties, and even a slow wander through Polpis Harbor. A quiet afternoon paddle in the warm harbor water separates you from the web of the world. The paddles dip, the water spreads, and the boat glides over the rocks, seaweed, and precious eel grass two feet underneath the red keel. The sailboats pass, and wave after they are gone. The ferry rounds Brant Point at the edge of your horizon. On Coatue, you drag the boat up, spread a towel, and lie under the Atlantic blue. Perhaps some reading. Not forever. Not always. Not even most of the time. But a life should have solitary moments when it is just Me, Myself, and I. A life should have a moment of stillness when the spark of life lies against the sand and under the sun. A life should claim its moment in the bright blue, before the sea swallows us and the sand grinds our dust. Very few of our moments in the world will be sung in chorus, memorialized in granite, or even remembered in a joke at a bar. Those moments, alone on a beach, next to a kayak, under the maritime sun will not be remembered and remarked on by anyone. Those who miss you know you will be back. Those who love you want you to stay a moment longer.Inthe last week of August, as the summer duties fade off into phone messages and the schedule of September begins to tick the boxes, we should choose a moment for ourselves. In that moment, we are enough for the time. We are enough to lie warm and pleasant by a warm sea under a bright sky, and it is enough for us. And in that selfish moment of sun and sand, take the picture of that place where you belong.

For more family fun such as sailing, fishing, theatre, tours, hikes, and ghost walks, turn to the calendar of events in this issue.
After two months of sun (and sunscreen), sandcastles (and endless sand), “wave” jumping at Jetties, Washing Pond, and Steps (and now jellyfish jumping), it’s time to find some activities that do not involve hauling all your stuff to a beach. Here are some suggestions for fun with your little ones on Nantucket Island. Barnaby’s Toy & Art Shack is a downtown space dedicated to bringing joy to children. It’s so much more than a toy store. Nearly every day owner Wendy Rouillard (yes, she wrote and illustrated the Barnaby books!) offers classes designed to promote happiness, inspire innovation, and empower creativity, incorporating natural, raw elements that surround us on this beautiful island. Some of the classes this week include Painting Pottery, “Getting Gooey,” Patches x Bags, Fairy House Wonderlands, and Working with Clay. Classes fill fast, so check the schedule at barnabysnantucket.com and sign up now! Bring the family to The Shipwreck Museum to discover dramatic tales of Nantucket's heroic lifesavers.
August 25 and 26 the museum is offering special hands-on activities for kids from 10 am to 4 pm. And bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on their beautiful property near Folger’s Marsh. Catch the Shipwreck Shuttle from Visitors Services, 25 Federal Street, on the half-hour, starting at 9:30 am Monday through Saturday. Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, 158 Polpis Road. 508-228-2505 EganMaritime.org Located a short walk from town along the shore of Nantucket Harbor at 28 Washington Street, the Maria Mitchell Aquarium is a great place to learn about our island’s unique marine environment, see (and touch) live animals, and discover Nantucket's biodiversity. The Aquarium is open Monday-Friday 10am to4 pm & Saturday 10am to 1pm.

The story told by Nantucket’s raw yet simple setting resonates well with Craven’s approach to filmmaking. “I make films set in earlier periods of New England, so Nantucket is a natural.” This setting also makes sense for his cast and crew. “We’re able to get reasonable prices for off-season dorm housing for our students. They can walk into town from their dorms at the Yacht club, which gives them freedom and the ability to explore the island. It’s a beautiful place, and I like to make films that take viewers into a distinct and beautiful world.”
Eden
The film was produced through Jay Craven’s Semester Cinema film intensive program in which 28 professionals mentored and collaborated with 35 students from multiple colleges across the country. “Students played substantial roles in every aspect of production. Their fingerprints are everywhere, from casting and costume design to sound recording, location scouting, and script supervising. They also built sets from scratch, including one for an early 20th century laundry and another for a New England tenement duplex.”

A longtime Vermonter and co-founder of Kingdom County Productions, alongside his wife, Craven and his family started living in Wellfleet on Cape Cod in 1969. His sister lives in Falmouth, and his brother is a teacher at Nauset Regional High School in Eastham. Craven’s connections to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard go back to college summers decades ago, when he fell in love with both islands.Craven’s cast for Martin Eden includes Andrew Richardson in the title role and Hayley Griffith and Annet Mahendru as Ruth Morse and Lizzie Connolly, respectively. Richardson trained at Carnegie Mellon and London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Royal Academy of Dance. His credits include eight film and television productions along with theatrical performances of “Taming of the Shrew” and “Othello.”
The screenplay for Martin Eden was developed by Sarah Lawrence College students in Jay Craven’s class “The Art of Adaptation: Screenplays and Films Developed from Other Forms of Literature.” Further screenplay development and revision took place during Cinema Sarah Lawrence’s pre-production period on Nantucket.

Of the 30 actors in Martin Eden, five are island residents and veteran actors Susan McGinnis, Vince Veilleux, Sarah Fraunfelder, Jack Bulger, and Roan LaScola. Several of these Nantucketers have worked previously with Craven. The first film Jay Craven shot on Nantucket was Peter and John in 2012. This movie, set in 1872 and largely filmed near Great Point and Coskata pond, was the story of two brothers who were rivals. In 2016, Craven brought another movie to Nantucket Island. Wetware depicts a dystopic future and brings to light some of the ethics surrounding the technology of today. Craven brought with him a team of 12 professionals and 35 students hailing from colleges around the country. Wetware featured more than 20 actors, including Nantucket residents Susan S. McGinnis and Jack Bulger Early this year, Craven returned to Nantucket with his students to film scenes for his ambitious Revolutionary War period piece titled Lost Nation, his tenth feature film. Scheduled to be released in 2023, the movie, which tells the story of Ethan Allen and poet Lucy Terry Prince, the first African American writer to ever be published. Nantucket residents you may see in the film include Jack Bulger, Michael Kopko, and a number of local extras. Nantucket speaks loudly in all of the films Craven has made here. “I have strong feelings about place. I’ve made four films on Nantucket that have each given me a new way for discovering this unique, mysterious, and fabulous island. And I like how this sense of place works its way into my films.” The final message in the ending credits says it all: “Heartfelt thanks to the town and the people of Nantucket for a hundred daily kindnesses.”
Martin Eden will definitely be worth the watch. For more information on timing and tickets for the August 30 screening, visit Nantucketdreamland.org. 508-325-1841
There is always something to learn from your peers, no matter the age difference. “They know things I don’t. I learn more from them, including when I try to explain my ideas or advice or guidance. It’s always fun. When working with students, you share what you know, combine talents, and invite them fully into this dialogue and process where everyone participates and contributes substantially to something larger than any of us.”

There are three categories in which to earn commendation: Pollinator Garden: Birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects are attracted to specific varieties of plants. You can create a pollinator habitat in a single garden or split among multiple areas of your yard. The garden must consist of plant ma-
At last week’s annual August Meeting of the Nantucket Garden Club, four properties were recognized and given the special Commendations: a lawn in Quaise that was traditional turf replanted with grass that uses very little water and attracts pollinators; a traditional turf lawn at a home near Hummock Pond that was turned into a pollinator garden using no herbicides or pesticides so the drainage into the pond remains clear of those pollutants; a private home on Medouie Creek where the owners turned traditional turf into a wildflower meadow; and The Conservation Foundation was recognized for the pollinator gardens they created to use for education. Each of the four who earned Conservation Commendations were presented with a metal medallion designed by island artist M.J. Levy Dickson which they can display on their properties.
“We’re excited about its first season, and we look forward to offering recognition to individuals and organizations,” commented Nantucket Garden Club President Christine Dean. “And we are working with Land Council to give out information about the options available. The Land Council has been a true partner and will continue to be so...our missions are very similar. We want to protect our fragile island as much as possible.”
For details on how you can receive a Conservation Commendation for your efforts by creating a pollinator habitat, planting a climate-resilient garden, or establishing an environmentally friendly lawn, go to NantucketGardenClub.org.

The Nantucket Garden Club and Nantucket Land Council are partnering to recognize gardens throughout the community that reflect best practices to encourage biodiversity, reduce the impact on our waters, and withstand the ravages of increasingly severe weather conditions. This program to give out Conservation Commendations was developed early this year and announced at the 2022 Nantucket Daffodil Festival.

terial beneficial to pollinators, a majority of which are native to Nantucket. Garden must remain free of pesticides and chemicals.
Turf: New or conversion from traditional lawn. Traditional lawns consume vast amounts of water resources and require ongoing fertilization that is detrimental to ponds, the harbors, and the island’s water supply. There are more resilient varieties of turf grass that do not require irrigation or the use of fertilizers.
The comb jellies are a little more common, though, and they come in for a few weeks each summer in response to warming water temps. Our most common species along Nantucket shores is Leidy’s comb jelly also known as the sea walnut. The comb jelly is not a jellyfish at all, but actually a member of the Ctenophora phylum. They are primarily made of water and don’t have stinging cells, so there’s no worry about swimming with these glowing comb jellies.Boaters describe steaming into the harbor after sunset and their wake being aglow. A naturalist friend says that, besides swimming, night kayaking in Polpis harbor has a certain magic to it during the bioluminescence. Each stroke of the paddle creates a glowing swirl. Be careful paddling at night though! The comb jellies usually start to come around in July, but the peak of the bioluminescent show is generally in August and around the new moon. Once there is a big night, expect the rest to be waning, but still good. I’m thinking that this week will be the best, so let us know if you head out! For the best locations, harborside is ideal, but any north shore beach should do. F ind a good stretch of shallow, even shoreline on a warm night. You don’t even have to fully swim. Walk along calf- to kneedeep in the water stirring up the jellies and watch them turn on and turn off.
Toyama Bay in Japan, where “firefly squid” can line the shoreline. But bioluminescent plankton also live in Nantucket waters and can shine nearly as brightly.
I was first introduced to the light show by my fellow interns at the Maria Mitchell Association in the 1990s. We’d ride our bikes late at night to Steps Beach and try to count shooting stars while floating in the ocean. This tradition continued when I worked in the restaurant industry. There’s nothing quite like a swim after a dinner shift during a Nantucket summer to wash away the August. Couple that refreshment with the luminescence and it’s pure summer magic! You just have to free your mind of other sea creatures and avoid spider crabs. No matter how old or young you are, night swimming with friends usually ends in lots of laughter and splashing. In this way, night swimming in the bioluminescence is also a youth tonic. And remember, September arrives next week.

The most common bioluminescent plankton in local waters are from the family of single-celled organisms known as dinoflagellates, and they light up due to a similar, but not identical, chemical process as fireflies. In our area, the two most typical sources of underwater pyrotechnics are comb jellies and dinoflagellates. If you see flickering underwater sparkles at a northern beach like Steps Beach, you are likely looking at a type of dinoflagellate known as “sea sparkles.” Sea sparkle (Noctiluca scintillans) is a single-celled dinoflagellate that is heterotrophic; they eat algae and even small zooplankton. For a single-celled organism, the sea sparkle is enormous, up to one millimeter in size.

To commemorate this special gift, the Wharf Rat Club (of which both Commander Walling and his wife were proud members), in partnership with the NHA, is holding a private ceremony at its clubhouse on Old North Wharf on Friday, September 2. Raymond F. DuBois, as well as Peter Holmes, Commodore of the Wharf Rat Club, will present the sword to Annabelle Fowlkes, President of the NHA Board of Trustees, as a formal gift to the NHA collection.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on February 2, 1912, Walling grew up on Nantucket, attending Academy Hill School and teaching sailing at the Yacht Club. He then attended Phillips Exeter Academy for high school, before continuing on to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he graduated in 1935. Throughout his naval career, he served on many submarines, reached the rank of commander, and was awarded two Silver Stars. His parents were Charles H. Walling and Georgie L. (Smith) Walling of Nantucket. His mother, Georgie, was a teacher at Academy Hill School, associated with the founding of the Kenneth Taylor Galleries at the Thomas Macy Warehouse, an employee of the New England Steamship Co. (now the Steamship Authority), and a member of the Wharf Rat Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the NHA.
John Walling married Doris Annabella Helmkamp of Southern California in May of 1943 before being lost at sea two years later, making Annabella a war widow at the age of 22. Commander Walling’s sword is being given to the NHA by Raymond F. DuBois, who received it from his mother Annabella. This gift will be in memory of Annabella Walling DuBois. Raymond F. DuBois is also giving the NHA copies of correspondences between Walling and his family for the NHA’s research files.
“The NHA is honored to accept Commander Walling’s sword into our collection. It is both an artifact of Commander Walling’s dedication to national service and a memento of his and his family’s personal sacrifices during World War II. We hope the sword and the Walling family’s stories can help the NHA illuminate new aspects of the island’s history for locals and visitors,” says Michael Harrison, NHA Chief Curator and Obed Macy Research Chair.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

Authentic American-made jewelry from quality pearls at affordable prices. Jewelry designer Pam Freitus creates unique jewelry from hand-picked pearls, stones, leather, crystals and glass. On some pieces, pearls are interspersed with turquoise, on others, the Ying and Yang of black and white is featured, or sapphire and diamond bling may be chosen to set off the soft reflection of the pearl’s whiteness. Look for Pam’s signature, a small red bead that identifies the piece as hers.

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
