Astronomical Show on Nantucket by Sanibel Chai The total solar eclipse occuring this Monday, August 21 is particularly rare because it is the first time the path of totality exclusively crosses the continental United States from coast to coast in nearly a century—the last time was on June 8, 1918. It is also the first continent-wide eclipse to be visible only from the United States since 1776. Nantucket will experience only a partial eclipse, with maximum eclipse of about 70 percent. All week Nantucket’s Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) has been offering a programs and workshops to celebrate this astronomical event. Because you should never look directly at the sun without proper eyewear, the Maria Mitchell Association is providing free solar glasses for safe viewing, which are available for pickup at 4 Vestal Street. This Sunday, August 20 from 2 to 3 pm, MMA interns and staff will hold a free Eclipse Workshop at their Vestal Street Observatory. The workshop will explain the science behind solar eclipses and provide a variety of methods to safely observe this rare phenomenon. Maria Mitchell Association’s Solar Eclipse Week culminates the day of the event with an Eclipse Party at 4 Vestal Street, an easy walk from town. They will close down a section of Vestal Street for an outdoor observation post where visitors can safely view the eclipse as they enjoy festivities with punch and cookies. This free event will give participants the opportunity to view live feeds of the eclipse from NASA. Participants can have their eclipse questions answered and view the sun through the MMA’s solar telescope. This telescope has a special filter built in that will protect eyes. Do not point a regular telescope at the sun to view the eclipse. At the party, you can also view the solar eclipse through several means of projection. Rather than looking up at the sun, you can watch the eclipse through a Sun Spotter, which uses lenses and mirrors to project the eclipse onto a white surface. The MMA’s astronomer, Dr. Regina Jorgenson, will join the party remotely

Sails Set for Race Week by Cara Godlesky The horizons of Nantucket’s oceans are often decorated with the silhouettes of sailboats traversing through the waves. The boats sailing in and out of the harbor is a familiar sight during the summers on the island. Come mid August, there’s an increase of boats on the water for the annual sailing event, Nantucket Race Week, brings sailors from across the country, and world, to compete in the regattas. Nantucket Race Week, now in its fourteenth year, includes a dozen different regattas, award ceremonies, picnics, parties and community fun. From August 12 to 20, Race Week will feature a variety of races such as the kiteboard, women’s, open laser, International One Design, youth regattas, and the Nantucket Regatta and the Opera House Cup. It was created as a fundraiser for Nantucket Community Sailing and provides ten days of joy for sailors leading up to the “grand finale”: the Opera House Cup Regatta, the first all-wooden, single-hulled classic boat regatta on the East Coast. In 1973, Gwen Gaillard, who owned Opera House Restaurant (a favorite among island sailors), started the Opera House Cup. According to the Opera House Cup website, the sailors wanted to put on a special event for Gaillard by creating a wooden boat race. Gaillard donated her antique silver champagne bucket to be “the cup” for the race winners. The champagne bucket is still used as the trophy and the winners’ names are engraved in the silver. Opera House Cup starts at 10:45 am on Sunday, August 20. In addition to watching the Harbor Start around 10 am, spectators can drive to Great Point between noon and 3 pm to watch the boats turn at a race mark in front of Great Point Light. Nantucket Race Week provides the funding for a quarter of Nantucket Community Sailing’s annual operating budget. Through the race and social

Green Lantern by Robert P. Barsanti I met the Green Lantern this weekend. He looked a lot like me. He is now taller than I am, and has more energy that I can summon, but he had the set of jaw, the piercing look in his eye, and a certain insouciance that I can lay claim to. He also had the ring, the shirt, and he knew the Green Lantern oath: “In brightest day, in blackest night No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!!!” I picked him up at school and drove him into Comic Con in Boston. I have lost the child within me that would truly enjoy Comic Con; he slipped away sometime in college or graduate school and was replaced by something vaguely professional and totally inadequate. For me, I felt as if I was at an amusement park watching the Cyclone roller coaster: I didn’t want to get on, but it looked like the fun that I should have. So it is at Comic Con. People get fully committed; they dress up as Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and many of the less canonical, but still interesting characters of the media stream. Some of the costumes were simple, but most had required construction, tailoring, and a healthy dose of courage. Several Princess Leia metal bikinis walked by in a convention center filled with thousands. If you need your faith in humanity restored, Comic Con would do it for you. I saw three Wonder Women; one was African American, one was white, and one was male. Of the wheel chair costumes that rolled by, one was a Dalek, one was R2-D2, and one claimed to be a victim of Darth Vader. Autism Speaks was represented ably by the New England Chapter of the Agents of SHIELD. The Green Lantern posed by the impressive and intimidating SHIELD vehicles. As the afternoon wore on, the crowd grew more and more dense and the jostling increased, but everyone was in good cheer and fine fettle beneath ferocious costumes. When you think of summer, the seashore and what to drink, Sancerre is surely one of the first wines to pop into your mind. The distinctive racy acidity found in this lovely crisp, dry wine from France can also be found in the Sauvignon Blancs that hail from the other neighboring cool-climate villages of this better-known region. Domaine Philippe Gilbert from Menetou-Salon is located adjacent to and just west of the more popular Sancerre region of the Central Loire Valley. Philippe took over as the vigneron to his family’s domaine, one of the largest in the area, located at the heart of this appellation after a successful career as a playwright. He practices biodynamic viticulture and the domaine is now certified as an organic producer as well. This Sauvignon Blanc is an expression from the classic mix of clay and limestone that sits on the famous Kimmeridgian Basin that extends from Menetou through Sancerre to Chablis and then onto Champagne. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and the wine is aged on the lees for fourteen months before bottling. The nose of this wine is very expressive, with aromas of citrus zest and intense minerality. It is fresh and balanced on the palate with mouth-watering acidity that invites you for another sip. Wine production in South Africa dates back centuries but received minimal international attention until Apartheid ended in the late 1990s. Waste Not,Want Not by Cara Godlesky As vacationers check out of their homes at the end of their stays, they clear out their closets, refrigerators and shelves. The renters remove their leftover foods, and a lot of it gets tossed away because they cannot take it on the boats and planes home. To prevent the food from being thrown out, local nonprofit, Food Rescue Nantucket, collects and redistributes it before it can perish in an attempt to combat food waste. Despite being a popular vacation destination, Nantucket is not exempt from the countrywide issues of food waste and food insecurity. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 30% to 40% of our national food supply ends up as waste. Food Rescue Nantucket started two years ago as a project to give back to the community through the Unitarian congregation. Food Rescue Nantucket partners with various island farms, businesses, and other nonprofits in order to help people on a wider continued on page 55

Last week an animal was seen on Nantucket that hadn’t been seen in at least a year. One mention of it on Facebook immediately garnered over 120 likes and comments. People wanted to know every detail , asked for proof, and how they could see it for themselves. Was it an unusual bird? A great white shark? No, those creatures are a dime a dozen. It was our good friend, Rocky the Nantucket Raccoon. Over two years ago now, June of 2015, a lone raccoon was spotted falling off of a lumber truck as it drove past Hatch’s on Orange Street. Apparently it scampered into the wetlands behind the package store and made its escape from there. For weeks, the town animal control officer and the Environmental Police tried to capture the beast. Sightings were all over Facebook feeds as people tracked our raccoon from town to Miacomet, Quaise, and back again. It wasn’t long before this raccoon got into the Nantucket spirit and had his own Twitter feed (@ACKraccoon). This went on for a while and then the flurry of activity faded and we were left to wonder about our masked bandit. Was it a he or a she? Did it have enough food and resources to survive? If it did, would it be our only raccoon or would there eventually be more to the population? Where had it gone? Was it a dumpster diver or had it made its way to the wilds of the Middle Moors? We were left with more questions than answers and lots of rumors. Some people swear there were two raccoons. Others claimed to have one living in their yard. The last semi-official sighting was in August of 2016 near the Nantucket Hotel. Since then there have been multiple rumors of raccoon sightings in the Tom Nevers area. There were also several stories that the raccoon had been found as roadkill on Polpis Rd. It seems that vulture food was not actually the end for our masked bandit. continued on page 31

Of course, I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be travelling by train and open wagon, but I will be leaving from Nantucket as Maria did. I hope to see you all at the Vestal Street Observatory via Skype!â&#x20AC;?, says Dr. Jorgenson, Director of Astronomy. There are four main types of solar eclipses: Partial, Annular, Total, and Hybrid. According to NASA, total solar eclipses occur once every 12 to 18 months somewhere on Earth, while partial solar eclipses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when the moon blocks only part of the sun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; occur more frequently, though visibility varies. If Monday is a sunny day on Nantucket, viewers will most likely notice the eclipse and it will appear to be temporarily cloudy; from here, the sun will not be completely eclipsed out at any time. The maximum eclipse (the point at which the largest portion of the sun will be eclipsed as seen from Nantucket) will take place at 2:46 pm, so be sure to arrive at the Eclipse Party beforehand. Distance from the sun and the moon determines how â&#x20AC;&#x153;totalâ&#x20AC;? the eclipse will be for a given location. A total solar eclipse is when the moon completely blocks the sun, allowing for the solar corona to be seen. The solar corona is a reddish outline around the sun that is usually invisible because it is too faint compared with the brightness of the sun. Oregon is in the path of totality so during the maximum eclipse the entire sky will go dark as the sun is fully covered. Other places in the path of totality are parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. This solar eclipse is a great learning opportunity as well as an historical event. The slate of events hosted by Maria Mitchell Association offers something for everyone, from curious children to the veteran astronomy buff. Take advantage of Nantucketâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lucky geography and head out to see this once in a lifetime phenomenon. The Maria Mitchell Association was founded in 1902 to honor the legacy and achievements of Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first female astronomer, Maria Mitchell. She garnered worldwide fame for discovering a comet over Nantucket in October 1847. She then went on to become the first professor at Vassar College. The Maria Mitchell Association continues to preserve her legacy of scientific achievement and to carry on her passion for hands-on learning. Today, the Maria Mitchell Association operates two observatories (Loines and the Vestal Street Observatory), as well as the MMA Aquarium, the Natural Science Museum, and the birthplace of Maria Mitchell. mass murderers. I tasked the Green Lantern with asking five people to pose with him for pictures and he was able to find some of his favorites. Everybody smiled. My Green Lantern’s main occupation at Comic Con was spending his own, and his father’s, money. In a convention center filled with vendors, this proved somewhat challenging. First, Green Lantern merchandise was not well represented. The Lantern has had a movie made, but it didn’t do well and most self-respecting comics aficionados pretend that it never existed. We did not have much time for some of the other esoterica we found. We didn’t need any special artwork, or personal sketches, nor did we see the need for sweatshirts, leather masks, specialty watches or glasses. We found a graphic novel (which is a twenty dollar comic book), several stickers which he hopes to put on his door, and five Lego figurines. My soon-to-be-eighteen year old Green Lantern has a plan. He is going to build a Lego City in the basement. It will have a SHIELD headquarters, several police and fire stations, a space port, and several other hard-to-understand buildings connected by roads and bridges. For the past four years he has been building his plans for this the same way that other people map out soccer careers or college applications. While we haven’t started the building yet, the figurines mark the first new inhabitants into his world. The Green Lantern is ready for that world. However, the Green Lantern Corps did not muster in Boston. We went through the convention hall several times without finding anyone with a power ring. I did not imagine that this task was going to be quite so difficult when I proposed it. I did not think my Green Lantern would be unique, but he was. Rick, Morty, Supergirl, Batman, Deadpool brushed by us, but nobody in green. Finally, after three hours, we stood outside in the food area and found a college student wearing the right t-shirt. Unfortunately, he did not know the Oath. Nonetheless, he smiled and posed with my Green Lantern and our search was somewhat complete. My son dozed off on the way out to Papa Ginos and back to school. In the comic book mythology, Hal Jordan was a test pilot who was selected by a dying alien to become the next Green Lantern. Out of all humanity, Hal was “utterly honest and born without fear.” The Green Lantern has a ring and a lantern (of course) which connects him to the Guardians of the Universe. The ring and the lantern let the wearer create anything they need in order to bring forth justice, deliver mercy, and defeat evil. And, as he sleeps, I can see the attraction of the hero for my young man. Through accident of birth, he is utterly honest and without fear. Further, he often seems to be listening to the whisperings of the universe and, through his imagination, creates all sorts of things in his mind. And, on this planet, he is utterly alone. This year, when I walk for Autism Speaks, I am not hoping to find a cure for my son. His autism has become his power, as cursed and as blessed as any superpower — I do not want to remove that green ring from his finger. Instead, I want to find a cure for our world. We live in a time when evil doesn’t need to wear a mask or hide in the shadows and the good are driven over and clubbed. The best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity. Our world has no place for the Green Lantern, though it surely needs him.

currently compete on the world market. Cape Point Vineyards is located in Noordhoek in the Cape Point Peninsula of the picturesque Cape Town wine region. Known as the coolest little wine region of New Zealand for more than just its cool climate temperatures, Waipara Valley is best known for its spicy, rich Pinot Noirs as well as its distinctive taste on Sauvignon Blancs. This unique region is located an hour north of Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island and the seat of the Canterbury region. Greyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peak Winery is located in the most northern part of this region just kilometers as the crow flies to the eastern seaboard but protected by the hills in between. The winery is owned by Nantucket summer residents, Peter Thomas, a native New Zealander, and his wife Debbie, an all-American gal. The winery draws its name from the unique limestone conglomerate that is found as the bedrock on which the vine roots grow. The limestone hills are a mix of fossils, sea shells and small pebbles that slope down to clay, making the perfect combination for growing wines with minerality and concentration.

addition to the boutique is Mark D. Sike’s line of clothing. Sike is a well-known interior designer who has broken into the fashion world with a stunning debut collection. A popular item this summer has been Rebecca De Ravenel’s tiered spherical earrings. The clip-on earrings dangle three lightweight spheres ascending in size and wrapped in silk cording. They come in striped and solid colors. Occasionally, men’s items are offered such as swim trunks or shorts in Ikat prints. It is C.J. Laing’s second summer at the ‘Sconset boutique, where they have a few items that are not available at the Centre Street store, such as adorable Antonello Tedde handbags. The bags are handwoven in eco-friendly fabrics with pom pom appliques and very hard to resist. C.J. Laing’s offerings are so different from other boutiques because many of the pieces are made specifically for the boutique. Ali Laing does research to “avoid sameness” and largely eschews trade shows. The woven baskets are made in Morocco and make great gifts. If you’re looking for a souvenir for yourself, a basket with Nantucket woven into it is a great memory. The selection of great sunhats comes from Lola in Brooklyn, whose millinery uses techniques dating back to the 1930s. Daniel comments, “If we can’t find something we like [already made], we find someone who will make it for us.” You will be sure to find something special for yourself or as gifts at C.J. Laing.

This wine is wonderfully aromatic with lemongrass and fresh cut hay that has a lovely texture creaminess on the palate due to the barrel fermentation of the wine. Named among the “Top 20 New Zealand Wineries” by Decanter magazine, you could sample this great wine while traveling on Air New Zealand or find it on island a bit closer to home at many of the events where Debbie is pouring it. She also offers free delivery anywhere on island when it is purchased from your local wine retailer. Napa Valley is known for its big, juicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Sometimes in that special vineyard, located along the Napa River in the northern part of the valley, is that sweet spot that features a distinctive alluvial, clay soil just right making a small, extremely limited amount of Sauvignon Blanc. Larkmead Vineyards located in Calistoga crafts this exclusive 100% Sauvignon Blanc wine named ‘Lillie’ that maintains the beautiful, secondary white wine characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc, but replicates the palate that comes across with the weight and gravitas of Chardonnay. This is done by extended élevage (French term for the progression of wine between fermentation and bottling) in French oak barrels, along with lengthy bottle aging for the wine to integrate before release. Pale gold in color, the wine has warm aromas of fresh wild flowers with mint and lime curd. The honeyed viscosity offers the depth of a wonderfully textured wine that carries an incredible amount of immediate drinking pleasure. Drink with: freshly baked clafoutis (baked French dessert of fruit, traditionally black cherries, arranged in a buttered dish and covered with a thick flan-like batter) This Sauvignon Blanc trip around the world will surely make you consider the source of the wine next time you pair any of these with your locally grown oysters!

event registrations, merchandise sales, corporate and individual sponsorships, the community sailing nonprofit is able to thrive. One of the ways Race Week helps raise funds is through the International One Design (IOD) Celebrity Invitational Regatta. This event features 14 teams racing 33-foot long IOD boats. Five people man each boat. One of those sailors will be a celebrity tactician. A celebrity tactician is an all-star sailor. Some of these all-star sailors have competed in the Olympics, America’s Cup, and other high caliber regattas. To raise money, the crews in the IOD Celebrity Invitational bid on their desired celebrity tactician to insure that they will get to race with a particular sailor in the event. As in any auction, highest bidder wins and gets that particular celebrity tactician as part of their crew. Not only is this regatta a fundraiser, but it’s also an opportunity for less experienced sailors to sail with accomplished ones. “For these teams that are basically amateurs, for them to get to sail with those kinds of people, it’s very, very cool,” said Diana Brown, CEO of Nantucket Community Sailing. The 2017 IOD Celebrity Invitational Regatta, the thirteenth running, will be August 16 to 18. Nantucket Race Week has social events open to the public throughout the week. The events, hosted by Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club, bring together the sailors and community members to celebrate the sailing community and the day's activities. Tickets for these events are sold on NantucketRaceWeek.org. “When these sailors get together, a lot of times part of the fun for them is not just racing in the day, but getting to reconnect with their friends who they haven't seen since last summer,” said Brown. The events also allow families of different backgrounds to interact through the common ground of sailing. On Monday, August 14, Nantucket Race Week will hold their family cookout to celebrate the youth Opti and 420 regatta. “The kids come up and get a medallion to hang around their neck and they’re so proud and happy. In addition to the social events, Nantucket Race Week has another special event, the Classic Yacht Exhibitionon Saturday, August 19. The exhibition features dozens of wooden boats along the docks of the boat basin. There will be between five and tenboats that are over 100 years old and many others over 50 years old. This collection may be “one of the best collection of wooden boats anyone will ever see.” “Some of the boats that come to the Opera House Cup are some of the most beautiful boats in the world,” said Brown. “They are antiques that have been lovingly restored at a huge cost and the owners do that because they just love these boats.” Brown says she does not know any other regatta that hosts an exhibition like theirs. Boats at the Nantucket Race Week exhibition showcase a part of sailing history. Tickets to the exhibition are available at NantucketRaceWeek.org and give participants the opportunity to go down below on the boats, talk to the captains, and learn about the historical boats. “Nobody ever gets to go aboard these boats, so you get to see them on the water and they're beautiful but to get to see them even up close at the dock is even more of an experience,” said Brown. Another well-known event for the community is the Rainbow Fleet Parade. The Rainbow Fleet Parade, which attracts thousands of onlookers, is held Sunday, August 20 at 9:40 am at Brant Point. The parade is comprised of a fleet Beetle Cats, known as Rainbows, with brightly colored sails circling back and forth along the shores near Brant Point. If you go to the Brant Point beach, you can watch the boats sailing and parading through the waters. The Rainbows have a long history on Nantucket. They are a type of boat that was used on-island since the nineteenth century. The Nantucket Yacht Club reintroduced the boats to Nantucket in the 1920s so children could learn to sail in safe, fun manner. The sails of the boats were all different colors so when the children were on the water racing, their families could differentiate one child from another. Today, the sails in the parade sport not only colors, but also stripes, clouds, stars and flag designs. “Watching the Rainbow parade and the beautiful sailboats heading out of the harbor on Opera House Cup race day is truly a Nantucket tradition and continued on page 30

If you decide to participate, arrive early and walk to Brant Point because parking can be difficult. With so many boats and visitors coming to the island for Race Week, eight years ago organizers implemented the Clean Regatta program to reduce the environmental footprint. Since 2010, Nantucket Race Week has been recognized as a Gold Level Clean Regatta. The Clean Regatta program, by Sailors for the Sea, has three main goals: generate less waste, reduce trash that ends up on water or the shore, and reduce pollution in the harbor. This year, the Clean Regatta program will totally eliminate the use of plastic. Nantucket Race Weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sponsor, Yeti, will provide big water jugs as well as individual water bottles for the participants in the events. There will also be a water fill station. Last year, the water refill station was so widely used that it eliminated the use of more than 4,500 plastic water bottles. The Clean Regatta program also provides information about using eco friendly bottom paint on boats, gives free pump outs and free fuel spill pads to larger boats. Nantucket Race Week, with the help of more than 400 volunteers, has become a large attraction on Nantucket with many different events, regattas and social gatherings. An island and sailing go together hand-in-hand and Nantucket Race Week provides an opportunity to let the maritime history of the community to shine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many people contribute to the success of this event, as co-chair I greatly appreciate the effort of Nantucket Race Week volunteers, Nantucket Community Sailing staff, the Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club. It is truly a community effort whose mission is to provide a world class sailing event enjoyed by competitors of all abilities and ages,â&#x20AC;? commented Crowley. You can drive to Great Point on the Sunday, August 20, to watch the Opera House Cup Race. Rocky is back. Skyler Kardell, Nantucket High Schooler and avid birder, was up early the morning of August 7 in Siasconset “owling.” This is when intrepid birders go out at dusk or dawn to call for owls. Skylar was out by the water tower looking and listening for owls when he spotted it. “I JUST SAW A RACCOON behind 'Sconset water tower @ 3:40 a.m.” was his Facebook post to the Nantucket Community. While some claimed it must have been a cat or a large rat, the legend of the Nantucket raccoon has again been given new life. Apparently, this isn’t the first time raccoons have been to the island. According to Hidden History of Nantucket (by Frank Morral & Barbara Ann White), the last time raccoons were seen on the island was 1858, when a small population at what is now Sanford Farm was eliminated by an organized hunt. However, one raccoon was shot in 1893. It was mounted and displayed on the pharmacy on Main St. Why should we care? Nantucket has very few mammals, and people are often surprised to hear that we don’t have on the island some that are common in mainland Massachusetts: there are no skunks, possums, foxes, coyotes, beavers, bears, fishers, nor bobcats on Nantucket. The other species that do call Nantucket home have evolved and thrived in the absence of these predators. A new predator could have devastating effects on a system that has developed in the absence of large mammalian predators. Animals may be “caught off guard” and defenseless in the face of a new threat. Raccoons feed on ground-nesting birds, eggs, amphibians, and fish. They eat acorns, various fruits, and can develop a preferential diet when food is plentiful. As many of us know, they have become accustomed to humans in many areas and can become a trash nuisance. Nantucket has multiple species of ground-nesting birds that thrive on the island in the absence of mammalian predators (other than rats and feral cats). Piping plovers, terns, and oystercatchers are just a few of the shorebirds that have been prey for raccoons on the mainland. Our sandplain grasslands host northern harriers, American woodcock, eastern towhees, and eastern meadowlarks; all ground-nesters which could be prey for hungry raccoons. One raccoon may not seem like too much for an island devoid of predators, but just one hungry raccoon with a preference for bird eggs could have a devastating effect on any of the aforementioned species. Fortunately, this lone raccoon was likely a male and not likely to have any tag-alongs. According to Raccoons: A Natural History, by Samuel I. Zeveloff, dispersal of raccoons tends to be driven by young males looking for their own territories. These young males often can’t compete for mates with the older males, so they move on to find their own territory. If that’s how our hitchhiker ended up on a logging truck headed for Nantucket, we’ll never know, but one thing is for sure; he may have abundant food resources, but still no mates to be had. While we can’t confirm this latest raccoon sighting, it is just one more record of a potential legend. Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally. Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship. Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities;

no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered.

Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Leave only footprints... Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Gyotaku is the art of creating prints of genuine fish on delicate handmade rice paper. This art form captures and reproduces the exact characteristics and features of an individual fish. First practiced in the early 1800s in Asia, Gyotako provided an accurate means of measuring and recording a commercial fisherman’s actual catch.
