Chaos & Crime at Christmas Stroll

When describing Nantucket’s annual Christmas Stroll celebration, most people think of Main Street lined with Christmas trees, Santa Claus arriving by Coast Guard cutter, people in matching costumes wearing elaborate holiday headgear, and the iconic Christmas tree in Killen’s dory bobbing peacefully in Nantucket Harbor.

Winter Treasure Hunt

We’ve had a marvelous fall with warmer weather than ever before. This has led to many more outdoor adventures, longer hikes, and even some late fall ocean swims.

However, as we settle in towards real winter on Nantucket, the winds will whip up and the bitter cold will eventually set in. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. You might just need an excuse to get outside. In the dead of winter, as the sun sets earlier, I know that I sometimes need an excuse to walk a little further or to explore a new spot. One answer to this problem for me, especially when my son was young, was to go on a treasure hunt. Welcome to the wonderful world of geocaching!

I last wrote about geocaching in 2017 (yesterdaysisland.com/hunt-real-treasure-geocaching/), but it’s time to update the what, how, when, and where for the island.

So, what is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game. At its most basic, geocaching is navigating to a specific set of coordinates and then attempting to find the geocache (usually some kind of container) hidden at that location. But at its heart, geocaching is an old-fashioned treasure hunt looking for an “x-marks-the-spot” kind of adventure. There are caches for all levels of expertise, types of mobility, and degrees of mental difficulty.

Geocaching is based on a long tradition of hiding clues somewhere around the world in hopes that someone else, someday will find it. While it was officially started in 2000, geocaching is based on older activities like letterboxing (which began in 1854). It uses orientation skills, problem solving, and a handheld GPS (usually a phone) to make discoveries all over the world.

There are currently 57 geocaches hidden around Nantucket. They vary from difficult and miniscule, to easier and big, but more on that later. The number of caches is down from my 2017 article when there was a more active geocache community and more than 80 active geocaches. But there are still plenty to find! Some represent conservation and natural areas while others are on historic sites that

Trespassing

We arrived before the storm. It had spun up off the east coast of Florida, knocked some sea walls down, then aimed to the west of us. The ferry alarmed the ducks and the seagulls as it crossed the Sound, slipping under the deep purple clouds, aiming for the white sands lit by a setting sun.

The storm came as it always did, gray and wet and windy. In the pink afterglow of a sunset, peeking under the margin of advancing cloud, the wind shifted. Hours later, in the dark, the rain came. It filled in potholes, streams, and wide brimming ponds that submerge the streets and float the always funny canoe boys across Easy Street.

By morning, the wind and rain had spun out into the Gulf of Maine. The great blue Canadian sky dried out the pavement, sipped away at the puddles, and the island emerged from another near catastrophe.

On-island, winter doesn’t so much as arrive as is revealed. Summer grows and spreads like a new fashion. The grass glows, the buds pop, and the warm air breathes over us from Surfside and Cisco. The bushes and moors hide their sticks and bristles in coats of green and yellow. In a moment, the boats arrive, the blankets spread, and the corn grows high. In the warm, glowing nights of summer, you can sink down into the season and let it swallow you up. Tomorrow will have waves, gentle breezes, and heavy tomatoes. And it will until it won’t, and summer gets blown off the trees and drowned in the puddles.

When winter arrives, the resort gets folded up, sealed away, and locked. The gates are unwatched, the windows are dark, the driveways are empty. My trespasser wanders in the digital eye of security systems, sniffing at the flower beds, trotting beside the pool, and watering the brown Hydrangea. The deer have been here first.

He trespasses from neighbor to neighbor in pursuit of rabbits and deer. He found a great and delicious dead gull, blown into the wall of a summer cottage. He sniffed and would have done more had not I led him away by the collar.

We see the recovery. The sump pumps are emptying the basements and the branches are getting moved off the roadways. We cross Madaket Road and tuck

Albert F. “Bud” Egan, founder of the Egan Maritime Institute, had a passion for art. Over several decades of acquiring and commissioning original works, Bud created a rich and diverse collection that became part of his island legacy when he bequeathed it, in its entirety, to his Egan Foundation. she had finished her studies at Princeton and Stanford and was working as an analyst for the CIA. “My husband told me ‘don’t quit your job: see if you can write it first’. I sold that book, left the CIA, we moved to Colorado,” Mathews explained.

Death on a Winter Stroll is Francine Mathews’ seventh Merry Folger Mystery, but it is her 30th published book. Mathews has written six standalone novels under her given name. In addition, under the pen name of Stephanie Barron, she’s written three standalone novels and fourteen Jane Austen Mysteries, with one final book in that series expected out in the fall of 2023.

While her Jane Austen books tend to be written in first person, Mathews writes her Merry Folger series and most of her standalones in third person: this style gives me “a wider cast, simultaneity of action, and complex choreography. I love writing them because of the juggling, the plot, and the pace.”

All the books she’s written to date are suspenseful and thrilling, each filled with crime or espionage, mystery and murder. “I grew up reading and loving detective fiction. I felt I could successfully create high-quality entertainment and enjoy it,” said Mathews. Her fans agree: each of her novels has met with acclaim, and her last Jane Austen mystery is highly anticipated.

“What I love about detective fiction is resolution to conflict in an idealized community. Stresses from the outside and an arbiter in the form of justice who can take the tensions expressed in the form of murder, resolve it, and restore harmony.”

When asked what makes our island the ideal setting for murder, she replied: “Nantucket is an isolated small community, but because it has such a wide appeal, everyone who comes here feels like they own it…There’s a sense of investment in the community and how it responds to outside influence. And that investment in Nantucket: the money from off-island plus the community that forms the backbone here and a lack of communication between… it all makes a great conflict.”

How to get started? First thing is to sign up for a free account at geocaching.com. There are paid versions with more finds, but there are plenty with the free version to start. The next thing to do is to create a name for yourself or your family. Be creative with this one: find a handle that works with your crew’s personality. Part of geocaching is being secretive about the whole thing, so you don’t want to give away your real name.

Load the geocache free app onto your phone. Geocachers previously used map and compass, so participation was limited. Now, with phones in our pockets, we are all armed with tiny supercomputers. The app uses your phone’s GPS to navigate to nearby caches. Look for what’s near you, and choose a cache to find. I suggest starting with an area that is familiar. In researching this article, I realized that there are newer geocaches I never knew existed on some of my favorite walking trails.

Before you go out, be sure to read the description and some comments. It’s important to start on a cache that isn’t too difficult, so you get the feel for what you should be looking for. Reading the last few comments also helps to know if the cache was recently found. There are several now that are still listed as “active” but actually haven’t been found in many months. This can happen when someone steals a cache (which almost never happens) or, more likely, when it goes into disrepair and/or washes away. Recently, a geocacher on Nantucket moved off-island, so some of her caches have degraded.

When you open the app and click on a cache, for example the one labeled “Squam Swamp,” there will be ratings for difficulty, terrain, and size. This refers to where the cache is and how hard it is to find. Squam Swamp cache is the easiest difficulty level (1 star) and the terrain is 1.5 stars. The size is listed as “regular”usually that means about the size of a Tupperware container. Many Nantucket caches are relatively easy, but as you gain experience, it can be fun to challenge yourself.

The size refers to what is actually hidden. Many are modified Tupperware containers, old ammo cases or containers, and sometimes cylindrical tubes. Peo-

ple who really like a challenge set up fake birdhouses, pretend pinecones that open, and even little Lego boxes. I’ve had a few fake rocks that tormented me when I tried to find them in the woods. Anything listed as “nano” in the size category will be extremely small. I once found a magnetic nano the size of a quarter stuck to the clapper of a bell (I won’t reveal that location, but it was a fun find for sure!). Inside the containers are treasures to be traded. You never want to take anything without leaving something in return.

The description listed will have info about the location. It might include where to park, what to look for or information about the property. Sometimes there is little in the description, and it’s purposefully vague. The description for the Squam Swamp cache talks about who owns the property (the Nantucket Conservation Foundation) and what trail marker number to walk to in order to get close to the hidden location. Some caches also have additional hints that are optional. On Nantucket, some of the historic caches have detailed descriptions of the site and its history. The cache labeled “Oldest House & Historic Garden” has detailed history of one of the signature properties of the Nantucket Historical Association. This is great for families. Kids get hooked on geocaching for the treasure part, but you can get them to learn more about the island and its history along the way.

So, you found a cache, now what? What’s even in it? Treasure! By “treasure,” this usually means simple things like small trinkets or tokens that will fit in a small box waiting to be traded. Erasers, matchbox cars, pencils… a treasure trove of tchotchkes. Another important item in a cache is the log book. This is the record of you finding the cache. Sign your geocaching code name and the date and often a word or two about your adventure and you’re done. Remember not to take the pencil that it used for signing in the cache! You can also log the find on your geocaching app. Remember, if you take a photo, please don’t post one that will give away the exact location. No spoilers!

Who’s hiding these things anyway? To officially hide a cache and have it listed on the geocaching website, you have to demonstrate some experience and understanding of the general rules. Hiding caches is another lesson entirely with

In addition to the steps to get started there is some geocaching etiquette that must be observed.



First of all, don’t let Muggles (i.e. those who aren’t geocaching with you) see what you’re doing. If you’re on a path poking around looking for a cache, be discreet when others come along.

 When you do find a cache, only take something if you leave something of equal or lesser value. Don’t put sticks or leaves as a trade for a keychain, that’s just poor form. I generally keep a small bag of trinkets in my car just for this purpose. The take-it-or-leave-it is a great resource for geocaching treasures.

 Do not put food in the cache. This just invites creatures of all sorts to wreak havoc on the cache, ruining it for everyone else.

 DO NOT MOVE THE CACHE! While that may seem obvious, it can be tempting to move it just a bit or hide it “a little better.” Leave it just as you found it, and then everyone will have a chance to find the cache after you.



On-island, you also want to watch out for poison ivy and ticks – hazards of any outdoor adventure.

Geocaching on Nantucket is a great way to learn more about the island even if you’re a seasoned old salt. There are people who make day trips to the island just to try and find as many caches as they can before catching the last boat. Whether they travel by bike or car, they often see more of the island than people who spend much more time here.

Geocaching is also a great hobby for travelling. When driving up to Maine or on a recent car trip to North Carolina, we like to find caches at various off ramps and rest stops along the way. It breaks up the car ride and gets us to pull off where we never would have stopped. Since caches are supposed to be hidden on publicly accessible land, we often find “hidden gems” of parks and properties we would not have found otherwise.

So get out there are enjoy the geocaching community. The more people who participate on the island, the more and better caches there will be to find. Hope to see you on the trail!

You come to the winter island with a fleece sweater and walking shoes. The club closed, the tennis net has been rolled up, and that restaurant that was in the New Yorker closed three months ago. The winter island is naked like an animal. You trespass where you want, through the moors, over the beaches, into the woods and back out into the darkened side streets of town. And during the day, the ocean light illuminates the walls and beaches like unblinking moonlight. Even out here in the marshes, your head angles upwards to the great expanse.

My boon companion and I found a camp. A tarp, a good sized can, a small gas stove, and smashed down grass. He sniffed about, found that spot where everyone had to go, and then found a bag of trash. He looked at me, as if he wanted to take it home, and I assented. The tarp was still wet, but the gas stove was cold. I hoped that whatever workman, mower, painter, or plasterer had found work and warmth off-island. But I left the stove, in case he hadn’t.

We live in a time of ordinary catastrophes. The recovery is ongoing; we either see it or we don’t. Each storm passes over and takes a piece of what we were away. It could be a branch, a tree, a house, or a family. Our catastrophes can be measured in dollars at the Stop-n-Shop, in boat tickets, or in ambulance trips. The island erodes in great clumps or in small bites. A restaurant closes, a family moves, or a house falls into the breakers. We see it, we bear witness, and we recover.

Winter is a time of recovery. During the summer, the visitors and the business offer hope and illusion. We can make it through this, we can make a bit more money, we can go to Fortieth Pole on Sunday and it will all work out. We can camp out until I can find a bed. But in the winter, the hope gets cleaned, folded and put away and the illusion gets locked in a storage shed. In the winter, we recover if we can. We leave if we can’t.

Once back home, I toweled my boon companion clean, then ushered him into the warmth of the wood stove. He found his water dish, then the big dog bed with his name on it, and curled up in front of the flames. Myself, I stood in front of the window, watched, and waited.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. 40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset.

Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered.

Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
