LPGA Legends Tour Benefit this Weekend The Legends of the LPGA are coming to Nantucket Island for the inaugural Nantucket Golf Weekend September 9 to 11 to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

Nearly 200 golfers will gather on the island for a long weekend of golf and social events highlighted by the presence of some of the greatest female golfers in the history of the game.

Building on the 20-year success of the Swing for Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the new Nantucket Golf Weekend will also now feature The Legends of the LPGA. While much of the golf and social events are for players and sponsors, two events open to spectators: the LPGA Legends Shootout on Saturday, September 9, from 4 to 6 pm and the LPGA Legends Pro Am on Sunday, September 10 from 9 am to 2 pm. These golf events will take place at Nantucket’s Miacomet Golf Club, the 2014 New England Golf Course of the Year.

The net proceeds from the Nantucket Golf Weekend will support Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Walk-In Care service, which offers easy and convenient access to medical care for non-life-threatening conditions without the trip to the emergency room.

The Legends Tour showcases the talents of LPGA Tour professionals age 45 and over and represents some of the most memorable and talented female golfers in the history of the game, including Jane Blalock, Nancy Lopez, Pat Bradley, Elaine Crosby, Heather Drew, Jan Stephenson, and Michelle McGann.

The Legends Tour roster of players has combined for nearly 750 wins on the LPGA Tour, including 80-plus major championships. Fourteen LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers play The Legends Tour; nine have served as Solheim Cup captains and dozens more have played Solheim. The tour has helped raise over $18 million for charity.

Faith in the Hurricane

by Robert P. Barsanti Another hurricane has missed us; it slipped away to the south and east.

It spun the fish and darkened the sunrise, but it passed on its one-way trip to Ireland without so much as a sprinkle. Nobody noticed but the surfers.

In Madaket, where the waves come into shore in long Hawaiian curls, four young men got morning rides on the monsters, while an energetic young woman, armed with three cameras, took pictures. The northwesterly wind blew into the face of the wave and the camera got many great shots from the beach. They were remarkable, not so much for the waves the surfers rode into the beach, but for the waves they missed. Caught and smashed in the brown water, the surfers popped back up and paddled back out through the storm. The waves are their playground and the hurricane is the best playdate they have had since the last storm missed. Days from now, those pictures will flash up on Facebook, fill laptop screens, and, perhaps, grace a magazine.

The surfers are true believers in a very American creed. They have faith in their own ability to solve the calculus of the breaking wave with their feet.

They have faith that the ocean, in one half-conceived flip of her wrist, won’t crack their necks on her pebbly sand. Finally, they have faith in the mandala of their lives. This storm will be like a dozen others, this wave will be like the hundred others, and this day be like the thousands that went before it.

Let it be boring and predictable and end with a cold beer, a nice pillow, and a dry bed. Let this ride be like all the others. Let us paddle out in the Fields of the Lord. Eddie would go.

NANTUCKET WALKING TOURS Providing Quality Tours Since 1998

Director of Research & Education for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation On Nantucket, we are particularly aware of the weather, reliant on predictions of storms, rain events, and extreme high tides. We aren’t just passive observers, though, as data collected on the island helps inform these predictions.

To help us understand precipitation patterns on Nantucket and how they fit into the bigger regional and national pictures, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) has become a precipitation center for the island, monitoring multiple aspects of our precipitation with four different and complementary projects. Since 2014, we’ve been taking daily precipitation measurements as part of the Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). This national citizen science network was started by the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University in 1998. The strength of this data set lies with hundreds of monitors collecting data with the same exact rain gauge using the same set of standard protocols in all 50 states.

The data collected is then publically available for anyone to use via their interactive website. Aside from curious citizens, the data are used by the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, and the USDA, among others. In 2016, data from the CoCoRaHS program helped illustrate that Nantucket was the only part of Massachusetts that was not under severe drought conditions with our island receiving more rain in July and August than the rest of the Commonwealth. The program has become so popular since its inception that President Obama established a gauge in the Rose Garden at the White House in 2015 as part of an effort to highlight citizen science. National Park Staff now collect the data daily which can be seen on the CoCoRaHS website.

Annual 10 x 10 Show Opens This Friday The majority of Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) exhibitions feature work solely by AAN artist members, however the annual 10 x 10 Open Exhibition that will be unveiled this Friday, September 8 with a reception from 6 to 8 pm includes participants from the entire island community.

Now in its thirteenth year, the 10 x 10 Open Exhibition is a popular and beloved AAN tradition, with every piece in the show measuring 10 inches by 10 inches. The work is hung in a grid-like pattern on the walls throughout the two-story Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street.

“It is always a fascinating show and amazing to see the many different ways an artist approaches a 10 x 10 canvas, all the same size yet each piece has its own individual character,” said Peter J. Greenhalgh AAN gallery manager. “The walls are literally covered in a mosaic pattern that is not often seen in galleries. It is a favorite among our artists as well as our visitors, who come to the gallery to see the works done by their friends, neighbors, and community members.”

Novel Gives an Insider’s View of Nantucket

by Sanibel Chai Steve Sheppard was attending a book club meeting on the south shore of Massachusetts when he realized one of the characters had an uncanny resemblance to someone he knew: himself. The Marshfield book club was discussing Sheppard’s first novel Tourist Town and asked him pointedly if the character Addie was designed in his own image. Sheppard balked at first, denying that Addie was a reflection of himself. Then Sheppard realized that he had written himself into the character inadvertently.

How peculiar it must feel to have a book group point out that you feature in your text. Sheppard expressed amusement and appreciation at the identification of his persona in his fiction. The book group members are such fans of Sheppard’s novel that they are helping to craft discussion questions for other book groups. The book group also offered input on Sheppard’s next novel, a follow-up to Tourist Town, also set in Nantucket. At present, Sheppard is juggling a number of fiction projects but his journey to his role as novelist has been as winding as a Nantucket tour bus route.

Sheppard grew up in Brockton, MA where his love of literature first burgeoned. Sheppard’s father was a writer whose work was published in magazines.

While attending Bridgewater State College (now Bridgewater State University), Sheppard met his wife Karin. Sheppard said there was no question about what he was interested in, and he majored in English without any hesitation. Karin first brought Sheppard to her hometown of Nantucket in 1979. Sheppard witnessed a bit of Nantucket history on his first visit to the island. He, Karin, and friends planned to spend the evening at the Preston Airport Lounge, but that very night it burned down. An enduring backup plan, they went to the Chicken Box instead.

puters and see a major hurricane, with winds up to 150 miles an hour, coming ashore somewhere on the East Coast some time over this weekend. Still, the early computer models carom the storm over the Chesapeake and into New England.

We have had a tremendous amount of luck in missing storms in my experience. Irene, Earl, Sandy, and Arthur came glancing by, spending their sublime power on other beaches and towns. I would rather watch the power of the ocean in my TV than in my back window. On TV, I can change the channel and see where Guy Fieri is tonight.

The smart people think it will miss.

And after it does, we will drain the tub, put extra batteries and beer away, and pick up the fallen branches in the yard. The more intrepid will fish for the random bonefish that got caught up in the swirl; the less intrepid will look for swans. Then the puddles will drain, the waves will eventually recede, and life will continue. The smart ones say that is what always happens.

I once thought I was smart. Then I kept locking my keys in the car. Smart people should be able to anticipate the future; they should be surfers standing on a wave. They should have an algorithm that models out all of the options and picks the most likely. That algorithm should prevent them from locking their keys in the car. After I looked into the driver’s side window at my keys, winking gleefully from the ignition switch, I knew that I had no such algorithm. I keep getting boiled by the wave.

Instead, I know that I am a stupid person. A stupid person is ready for the unexpected and the painful, because it has happened so often in the past.

And I have been pecked to death by black swans. Stupid people keep an extra pair of pants in the car, a twenty-dollar bill in their socks, and an extra key in their briefcase. They know, as I know, that the stupidest thing is the surest thing.

So many smart people have been hard at work on this island. They have poured tons of sand over the Sankaty Bluff in order to stabilize it and keep the long brown waves from reaching up, pulling down a Hedge Funder’s dream, and drowning it in the ocean. They have suspended thousands of houses on the off-island electrical grid, propped them up on a sewer system, and guarded them with four or five elderly fire trucks. And in their wisdom, the universe has rewarded them and filled their off-island bank accounts.

Yet, we live in a confounding moment, beset by political and meteorological storms. Harvey grew from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in thirty-six hours, then dumped more than four feet of water on Houston. The smart people filled the marshes, built on the barrier islands, and paved the prairie. Then a hurricane, in its sublime wisdom, befuddled them. It sent oil men to shelters and kayaks to highways. The weathermen had no words.

We live in a time beyond history, beyond precedents, beyond analogues.

The ice is melting, the hills are burning, and the cities are flooding. The past may still be prologue, or it may be a comfortable myth we tell our children when the wind howls and the tide rises. Yesterday is now tomorrow’s dream.

Most of us lead deluded lives. We know how smart we are, how informed we are by our phones, and how predictable the world is to our algorithms.

We believe that today will be like yesterday, as will tomorrow. We see our lives as the surfers do, believing that skill and faith will make the ocean orderly and safe.

The hurricane never hits the island; it always misses.

On September 16, a church institution reaching back centuries will join a musical tradition decades in the making when the First Congregational Church welcomes the Chane Gang, led by Bishop John Bryson Chane, to Nantucket to perform classic rock and Chicago blues for its “Rock the Restoration” celebration. For nearly three hundred years, the First Congregational Church has served as a pillar of the Nantucket community, offering programs to meet the diverse needs of a constantly changing island. Its iconic steeple welcomes ,people to the island as they round Brant Point, and their tower climb offers unmatched views.

Built in 1725, the Old North Vestry is one of the oldest church buildings in America that is still in use. The Summer Church was erected more than a century later in 1834. Over the years, the church buildings have been home to individuals and organizations that have been integral to the history of Nantucket, including the Ladies Union Circle, the oldest continuous women’s circle in the United States, formed in 1846. During the Great Depression, the first theater group on Nantucket, the Whalers’ Little Theater Group, was formed in the Congregational Church. During the years following World War II, Nantucket high school students marked their graduation with a ceremony in the Summer Vestry.

Today Nantucket’s First Congregational Church is still a gathering place and host to cultural, educational, and social service programs and activities on the island.

In 2015, members launched a capital campaign to fund the renovation and preservation of church buildings. Logs for the Logbook Commonly asked questions and misunderstandings about antiques… and the odd or end fascinating bit!

What are those little brass torpedoes attached to long ropes? They are ship’s logs and were used by sailors to measure their speed under weigh at sea. Ever since sailors first ventured out of sight of land, the simplest dead-reckoning navigation required skippers to judge how fast they were moving. The original simple solution was to toss an actual log overboard, attached to a line paid out with a knot tied at regular intervals: the sailor counted how many knots passed his hand over a measured time period. The resulting measurement came to be called a knot, or nautical mile per hour, later defined as the speed required to travel approximately one minute of geographical latitude in one hour.

By the 18th Century sailors began using Taffrail or Patent Logs, a sort of sea-going odometer with a gauge mounted on the Taffrail (on the stern) recorded speed based on distance traveled as measured by a rotating vane towed behind the vessel.

What about the ship’s Logbook? By now you’ve probably guessed it started as a book used to record the log readings, but then evolved to include all weather and sailing observations, as well as mention of any noteworthy events during the voyage.

As part of the educational mission of LLNF, we also helped establish a CoCoRaHS station at the Nantucket New School in 2015, where the students have incorporated their daily measurements into lessons on climate, weather, and science. The 2nd and 4th graders produced a short video in 2016 that was recognized by the national headquarters. Continuing with the LLNF mission, the Saltmarsh Senior Center is also planning to install a CoCoRaHS rain gauge. More rain gauges across the island mean that we can get a more accurate picture of precipitation patterns. Many of us have had the experience of talking to someone in Madaket where it’s raining and being in town where the streets are still dry. The more rain stations, the better! With the CoCoRaHS program, anyone can establish a gauge that wants to and the gauges only cost around $30. Their website is also full of educational materials for all ages.

While CoCoRaHS permits anyone to participate, LLNF was recently asked to collect daily precipitation data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as part of their Cooperative Weather Observer (COOP) program. Becoming a COOP observer makes LLNF an official climate site.

Through the COOP program, more than 10,000 volunteers take daily weather observations at National Parks, seashores, mountaintops, and farms as well as in urban and suburban areas.

The COOP program is the nation's largest and oldest weather network. It was established in 1891 to formalize the collection of meteorological observations and record climate conditions in the United States based on the ideas of Thomas Jefferson. Because the network’s observers have generated consistent long-term historical climate data, the network has established an instrumental record of climate. Climatic atlases for the country are based on decades of observations from COOP observers. These data are invaluable in learning more about the floods, droughts, heat and cold waves affecting us all. COOP data plays a critical role in efforts to recognize and evaluate the extent of human impacts on climate from local to global scales. The LLNF

COOP site will add to this historic data set and help create more accurate weather predictions for the island.

In addition to how much water falls and when, the LLNF is also helping monitor what’s IN our precipitation. In 2014, the Nantucket Land Council partnered with the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) to establish an NADP station on the LLNF property. This station is powered by a solar panel and collects rain water into a collecting bucket every time it rains. Once a week, Emily Molden from the Nantucket Land Council collects the bucket and mails the sample of precipitate to the NADP lab. Samples are analyzed at the program’s Central Analytical Laboratory in Champaign, Illinois, to determine the amounts of certain chemicals, including NO3- and NH4+.

More than 250 stations across the US make it possible for NADP to provide the only long-term record of precipitation chemistry in the United States.

This information is used by scientists, policymakers, and the public in addressing the health, environmental, and agricultural issues facing the nation, including policy decisions related to the Clean Air Act amendments. NADP was initiated in 1977 to address the problem of atmospheric deposition and its effects on agricultural crops, forests, rangelands, surface waters, and other natural resources. The Land Council is currently looking at the Nantucket data to see what precipitation on Nantucket contains.

Recently, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation was asked to participate in another precipitation collection research project with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. With this project, researchers are asking some CoCoRaHS volunteers to save the rain in the gauge and send it to their lab in Amherst. This project started at LLNF on September 1 and is expected to go through at least one year.

The Linda Loring Nature Foundation continues to collect valuable precipitation data both to contribute to the national data sets, but also to provide educational opportunities for Nantucket’s school children and visitors. We’re also happy to help others who’d like to establish a CoCoRaHS rain gauge for themselves.

Nantucket in 1980. Karin is an accomplished weaver, having fallen in love with the craft as a young girl, and was able to secure a position as a weaver for Sheppard. Sheppard took up his post at Nantucket Looms and became proficient himself. When asked if he has practiced weaving much lately, Sheppard takes a moment to think before mentioning that he helped Karin a few years ago and, “like riding a bike,” weaving came back to him with ease.

Sheppard says that he and Karin had intended to stay in Nantucket for one year only, but ended up making the island their permanent home. Apart from one year Sheppard spent at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, MA he has lived on Nantucket uninterrupted.

After a year spent weaving at Nantucket Looms, Sheppard began work as a reporter at The Inquirer and Mirror. He recalls that his first story ever was “Eating with Teachers,” an article about a back-to-school breakfast for teachers. Sheppard is now a teacher at the elementary school, teaching music to students in grades three, four, and five. Music figures prominently in Sheppard’s life and he can play the guitar, piano, and drums. Sheppard’s band The Shepcats is well-known on the island for their bluegrass sound. Their regular gig at the Nantucket Yacht Club is not open to the public but you can enjoy their music during off-season concerts they sometimes play in the Nantucket Atheneum. Two years ago the Shepcats played a program of the Everly Brothers and last January they played a program of Bob Dylan. This upcoming winter they hope to play a program of John Prine.

It was in Nantucket Magazine that Sheppard’s first piece of fiction, a short story, was published. Sheppard served as editor for that now defunct publication from 1998-2005. The periodical celebrated the culture, history, photography, and what was special about the island, Sheppard says.

He learned a lot during his years working in journalism, and Sheppard shared what he described as the tenets of journalism. “You have to know your subject or, if you don’t, you have to learn it and then put it in language that anybody would understand,” Sheppard explains. He uses sports as an example of “translation” that requires deftness. Even if someone is unfamiliar with the rules of baseball or football, they should be able to enjoy an article continued on page 21

about the sport nonetheless so long as it is written by a skilled journalist.

In Sheppard’s novel Tourist Town, the character Addie is a tour bus driver and guide. Sheppard himself played this exact role in the late eighties and early nineties in Nantucket. His real life experiences informed many of the features of Addie’s career. Just as the characters in the book do, Sheppard and his fellow tour guides used to race around the island on the five o’clock tour to see who could arrive back at base first. Sheppard speaks fondly of his time as a tour guide but remembers a decidedly unpleasant obstacle. The state inspector arrived for Sheppard’s test on the 11 am ferry during Fourth of July weekend. Amidst some of the largest crowds of the summer, Sheppard had to navigate a bus to various destinations under the inspector’s guidance.

This sort of story is ripe for fiction.

The initial writing blast, as Sheppard refers to it, of Tourist Town took roughly six months. Two additional years were required to re-write, tinker, and incorporate suggestions and feedback into the story.

Sheppard has received overwhelmingly positive feedback since the publication of Tourist Town. His readers have been asking when his next book is coming out and I am pleased to report that he is working on two novels and a children’s book. One novel is the follow-up to Tourist Town and the second work in progress is a novel called Macaroni Man that has been gestating for years. Set in Sheppard’s hometown of Brockton, MA, Macaroni Man concerns the closure of a plant that makes macaroni and cheese for Howard Johnson’s.

Sheppard offered a few details about the story: the shutdown of the plant affects the jobs of Brockton’s population and everyone reacts in different ways.

One character takes up a new career as an undertaker and another begins building a bomb shelter. Sheppard is more tight-lipped about his children’s book, but did reveal that it concerns the natural history of Nantucket.

When asked whether he believed Nantucket catered to a writer’s life, Sheppard was quick to affirm. He cites the supportive writer’s community in Nantucket and the “constant inspiration you get from the island” as the main elements that make it conducive to writing. Sheppard continues, explaining that the Nantucket Book Festival does so well because “there’s no pretense.

It’s not like a manufactured festival. It’s really of the fabric of the island.”

Sheppard’s fiction tends to pull from his own life and is the stronger for it.

His dual career as teaching musician-writer will provide him with ample content the fiction his loyal fan base is insisting upon.

Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy.

Dr. Loretta Roberson will provide an overview on the status of reef ecosystems around the world and why we should be worried about the changes that have been observed.

She will also discuss new research and initiatives at the Marine Biological Laboratory that can help us minimize or reverse the effects of a changing world seen not only in coral reefs but in marine habitats from Cape Cod to the Caribbean and beyond. Nantucket Science Center, 33 Washington Street.

7 PM - Free Lecture: “Why the World Needs the Paris Climate Agreement” In 2015, 195 countries met in Paris & adopted an agreement to control global climate change. Now, the US government is rethinking its commitment to the agreement & the need for climate science in general.
