Talk to any arm-chair theorist and they’ll tell you that anything can happen, anywhere, and it does. What does that mean, really? Well, for short, it means that when you were five and narrowly avoided being hit by that neighbor’s car, in another version of reality you might not have been that lucky. Or that, years later, when you struck out at the big game and the opposing team hit a home run, in another vortex you were the one slung over your teammates shoulders in victory. In another reality you never uttered that first word to your spouse at the bar, and instead married the next flame to come along. The thought here is that although we are on one trajectory, cruising continued on page 20

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
Our Piece of the Pie by Robert P. Barsanti On a crystalline Saturday for brides, I crashed a wedding. I had known the groom well in the days when I was able to collect his homework, assign him lunch detentions, and wonder if he would go to the prom. In the stretch of years after that, he flew off to Providence College and found himself in the company of bankers and financiers. Then, in a lurch of time, a woman with grace and laughter tapped him on the shoulder. They married on the bluff in Tom Nevers and celebrated in a hidden house in the scrub. I followed a hovering drone up the street, through the hedges, and into a spill of guests on the grass. Nantucket weddings, with Nantucketers at the center, are Shakespearian comedies where the actors take on different roles for each performance. In yesterday’s performance, I was the groom and you were the bartender and she was the baker. Today, I will be the baker, she will be the bartender, and you will be the groom. Tomorrow, we switch again, only this time we will have oysters and littlenecks on ice. When I walked into the yard, no one knew whether I was the guest or the gardener. In the ensuing confusion, I collected a watermelon and jalapeno margarita as a badge of membership and joined the crowd. When you host a wedding with all of your childhood friends, you can’t hide the treasures under some sort of sober modesty. The good wine has to come out-because we all know that you have it. So, the musical parents reformed their bluegrass band for one more set, and a special song for the couple to go with Bob Dylan. The mother of groom took to the loom and wove not only wraps and ties, but also the groom’s dinner jacket. Over a long weekend, his friends and classmates jetted in and returned to being islanders. Behind the hedges and away from the road, the islanders bloom among friends. In spite of the tight pants and the odd tattoos, I envied the luxury of their youth. On this wedding day, the Class of 2004 represented itself well. They didn’t continued on page 17

Filling the Pages by Cara Godlesky For some, an occupation can defines their life, requiring all their energy and inspiration, leaving nothing for pursing their dreams. Islander Jim Sulzer proves that if one’s passion for something is strong enough, success can be attained. James Sulzer, also known as Jim, taught on Nantucket for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 2015. He dedicated 21 years to Nantucket Elementary School and 8 to the Nantucket New School. Sulzer thoroughly enjoyed teaching, but his true passion is writing. Sulzer first came to the island in 1982 to pursue his dream of becoming an author, but life got in the way. Needing to provide for his family, Sulzer worked in scalloping and carpentry, but soon realized he was not well suited for those industries. When he saw a help-wanted ad in the local newspaper for a writing teacher, he decided to try his hand at teaching. “I went in for an interview and they put me in a class and within five minutes I realized, wow, this should be my profession,” said Sulzer. “It was one of those strange things where I really knew right away that I loved interacting with the kids and being in this role.” During his decades as a teacher, Sulzer never gave up on his writing. During his first few years of teaching, he had his first book published, Nantucket Daybreak. The book depicts island life as it tells a tale of two summer workers employed on a scalloping boat, and shows how romance, affairs, and actions can affect a small community. From Sulzer’s first book in 1988 to his most recent book published in 2016, The Card People, he grew as an author and fine-tuned his writing process. “I think the main thing I’ve learned is that I write better when I don’t have a clear plot ahead of time. I do best when the characters just come alive, and I just follow them as they walk and talk and do things,” said Sulzer. “I might continued on page 18

COSKATA-COATUE WILDLIFE REFUGE AND GREAT POINT
Sept. 14-20, 2017
Sippers for the End of Summer by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Rosé isn’t just about warm and sultry summer days on sunny beaches anymore. Also sometimes referred to as “Nantucket Water,” this refreshing category of wine, as an alternative to red or white, has become part of the glamorous lifestyle associated with life on our magical island. As the sun begins to set a little earlier and the night air becomes crisp and worthy of your favorite cozy zip sweatshirt, now is the time to start the transition to fall weather drinking rosés that offer a little more substance than your light and easy-drinking summer sipper. Famille Perrin, Ventoux Rosé 2016: The Perrin family has been producing wine in the Southern Rhône Valley for generations. Their winery is located outside the commune of Orange, north of the more well-known city of Avignon in southeastern France’s Provence region. They use the same expertise and passion that they do for their higher tier wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape (ie. Château de Beaucastel) to bring out the true character and freshness in their every drinking wines as well. Their organic and biodynamic approach to vineyard management and wine production, along with their masterful art of blending different grapes from different terroirs had no doubt given them a reputation for value and excellence. This affordable rosé that conveniently comes with an easy access screw-top is a blend of Cinsault, Grenache Syrah. The grapes are bled into stainless steel tanks in order to extract minimal color. From the inviting bright peach pink color, to the fresh and aromatic nose of red fruit and wild flowers, this wine has an excellent balance of texture, moderate acidity and great length that will linger on your palate for several minutes after your first sip. Best paired with Sunset at Steps Beach. Gerard Boulay, Sancerre Rosé 2016: Of the small number of vineyards owned by Gerard Boulay in the hamlet of Sancerre known as Chavignol, these vineyards are on Kimmeridgian soil (the same chalky, mineral soil found in Chablis). Boulay personally works his organically-farmed vineyards by hand, letting nature make the wine for him. Unlike many Sancerre Rosés, Boulay’s 100% Pinot Noir Rosé is not made from a selection of young vines but rather from 35-40 year old Pinot Noir vines located on the steep hillsides right in front of the his home on the property. The wine is tank fermented and aged, meaning no oak about it at all. The deep salmon color shows that this is a more meaningful wine meant for food and an adult evening of conversation, but don’t take the wine too seriously either. Mineral driven on the nose, it has soft peach and strawberry flavors combined with the continuation of the minerality with a lengthy finish that invites you to slowly come back for more. Serve poolside with your backyard barbeque. Château Pradeaux, Bandol Rosé 2016: There is Bandol, known more for its red wine production, and then there is the iconic, standard bearing, leading rosé of the region from the Portalis family of Château Pradeaux. The property is located on the outskirts of the town of Saint Cyr-sur-Mer, directly on the Mediterranean Ocean between Toulon and Marseilles. The estate has been in the family since the 18th century. While the soil of the vineyard is worked by machine, there

How to Attract Birds This Fall by Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation
Curious Blue Jay at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation bird photo booth.
Fall brings many things to the island: more parking spaces at the Stop and Shop, False Albacore in the harbor for some great fishing, and some amazing fall wildflowers. Fall is also an exceptional time for birding on Nantucket. Thirty miles out to sea makes us a great stopover for migrants. Fall storms can also bring unusual birds from afar – a treasure for local birders adding to life-lists. With fall upon us and migration underway, how can you attract more birds to your yard, feeders, and other favorite viewing spots? How can you have a good chance of seeing more birds this fall? The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is hosting two special presentations this weekend in their Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street. This Friday, September 15, at 7 pm, The world-famous Walden Chamber Players returns for a Nantucket performance. Founded in 1997, the Walden Chamber Players are considered one of the most exciting and versatile chamber groups performing today. The Walden Chamber Players bring together rousing and eclectic combinations of string, piano, and wind ensembles that draw from a rich palette of sources and styles. Based in New England, the ensemble performs in some of the most prestigious venues throughout the United States. Friday’s performance will feature classical pieces including “String Trio in B-flat Major, D. 581” by Franz Schubert, “Waltzes for violin, viola, cello, and double bass” by Fred Lehrdahl, “Sonatine a trois, op. 221b” by Darius Milhaud, and “String Trio in G Major, op. 9, no. 1” by Ludwig Van Beethoven. Tickets for the performance are free for NHA members and $10 per person for the general public and can be purchased at nha.org/tickets. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with the concert beginning promptly at 7 pm. “The NHA is thrilled to welcome back the Walden Chamber Players for an exciting performance at the Whaling Museum,” commented Brianne Roth, NHA Public Programs Coordinator. “This year’s selections will surely delight and inspire music lovers of all ages.” The Walden Chamber Players appearing at the Whaling Museum are: Bassist Donald Palma, Violinist Laura Frautschi, Violinist Christof Huebener, and Cellist Ashima Scripp. On Sunday, September 17, the Whaling Museum is closing early at 3 pm to prepare for a special evening called “Our Nantucket: A Celebration of Lithuania” to be held from 4 to 6 pm. This free event is part of a series that the NHA presents periodically to feature the diversity of Nantucket residents. “Nantucket’s rich history has a long-standing legacy of a diverse mix of people from all over the world,” says Roth. “The NHA is honored to celebrate cultural diversity through the Our Nantucket series. Each installment seeks to engage neighbors, friends, and community members to share experiences from near and far in hopes of learning about different cultures in an inspiring atmosphere.” At Our Nantucket Lithuania, audiences will be treated to a variety of cultural performances and live events throughout the evening. Each of the NHA’s “Our Nantucket” program features a panel of guest speakers who bring awareness to their individual stories of immigration and relocation to Nantucket. Facilitated by the NHA, panelists share their memories of their home countries, along with their new experiences since moving to Nantucket Island.

Nighttime Wonders The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), Nantucket’s Science Center, has announced Open Nights at the Loines Observatory for the upcoming fall season. There will be two open nights each month starting Monday, September 25 and Tuesday, September 26 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. Open Nights in October will be Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24 from 7 to 8 pm. Finally, Open Nights in November will be Monday, November 27 and Tuesday, November 28 from 7 to 8 pm. During each Open Night, the public is invited to look through the refurbished historic 8-inch Clark telescope, as well as a state-of-the-art, 24-inch research telescope. Professional astronomers are on staff to point out interesting objects in the night sky and to conduct a constellation tour. Admission fee is $10; MMA members are admitted free of charge. “Nighttime fall skies over Nantucket bring all sorts of new wonders, like the Andromeda Galaxy and eventually, the familiar Pleiades Star Cluster. Earlier sunsets mean night time observing can begin earlier, making it a perfect time for Nantucket families to plan a visit to the Observatory,” says Dr. Regina Jorgenson, Director of Astronomy. When not open to the public, these telescopes are used to conduct astronomical research that is performed by the MMA’s astronomy staff, visiting astronomers, and summer college astronomy interns who take part in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) funded program. Each year, six students are chosen for the NSFREU program from among hundreds of applicants. Each student is required to conduct astronomy research and then present, and in some cases, publish their findings. The Maria Mitchell Association has hosted astronomy interns each year since 1914. The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is named for America’s first female astronomer, Maria Mitchell, known for discovering a comet over Nantucket in October 1847. She went on to become the first woman professor of astronomy in the US when she was hired by Vassar College in 1865. The MMA was founded in 1902 to preserve her legacy of scientific achievement and to carry on her passion for hands-on learning. Today, the MMA operates two observatories, the MMA Aquarium, the Natural Science Museum, and the birthplace of Maria Mitchell.

throw spitballs, staples, or erasers. They didn’t chew gum, or laugh, or text anyone besides the babysitter—somehow they had entered their thirties and had become the people we had over-promised years before. They were parents. They were voters and tax-payers. They were lawyers, bankers, doctors, engineers, and sailing captains. One of them worked for the NHL, another was a rocket scientist, and another had saved a bus load of children. They took off from the island and soared at a velocity beyond hope. Schools measure their success in one-year increments. We measure how this year’s SAT scores measure against last year’s, how many more students we have this year than last year. And how many students got into Harvard. The voters, the state, and the bureaucrats want quick and easy answers that will fit into a chart and go onto a three-color slide that realtors can show prospective buyers. But effective schooling, and parenting, is only measured by the graduate, not the year. Show me how well the fat, middle-aged graduates succeed in the world, I can tell you how good the school was. In the gentle gold of a September sunset, these parents, teachers, lawyers, and bankers lined up and posed with a “borrowed Nantucket High School banner. So this, I thought, was what Vision 2020 looked like. In the eighties, Vision 2020 was a vision for the schools that hoped to bring them into the right century. The noxious phrase came bouncing out of the superintendent’s mouth constantly. John O’Neill saw the future coming to this island, and it carried a briefcase and kept billable hours. As Superintendent, he forced the island to upgrade the leaky elementary and middle schools, then to replace the high school. He evangelized to every group he could find, from the Selectmen to the Rotary to the Angler’s Club to the fishermen tied up at the town wharf. He walked into a room with a huge map of the new building, a Franciscan confidence and good humor; he was frequently met with doubt and derision. Voters didn’t understand why they needed to pay more money for Vito and the football team to have a new building. Nor why they needed a swimming pool. His hands would spread, he would smile, and the business class bromides would drop. It was our “piece of the pie. We had to be ready for the twenty-first century, and we needed “2020 vision. And, of course, the “train is leaving the station. He got his new school and his new teachers and his swimming pool. He got computer labs and developing stations for the photography class and wet suits for the oceanography lab. Then he stepped down. Twenty-seven years ago. The builder’s greatest honor is to be forgotten. John O’Neill remained on island, helped out at the elementary school, and worked with the church— then he slipped away. His building also disappeared. Like most monuments, the school has entered the backdrop of our lives and become the new normal. We pass it everyday on our way to the store. It is unrecognized, unnamed, unremarked. And absolutely vital. Like air. Eventually, time levels everything. The building will follow its builder into the ground. On Nantucket, monuments tend to burn, fall over, or sink. The high school will suffer the same fate; time will knock down the walls, obscure the names, and empty the rooms. Twenty-seven years from now, it may be the new Island Home. By then, the building will have done its work. It raised the hopes and expectations for the parents; it raised the capabilities of the staff; and it launched its graduates into the jet stream. The monuments to John O’Neill’s life work wore dress clothes and drank watermelon margaritas. Like their forefathers, they found success in the rest of the world, then brought it back here, to a yard in Tom Nevers on a September afternoon.

have a general shape of the story in the back of my mind, but if I try to plot things out ahead of time, I don’t think I do as good of a job...It’s not interesting enough.” In addition to developing his style, Sulzer has also written different genres. His second book, Mom Comes Home, is a memoir recalling his family’s experience of a mother-in-law moving in with them after she had a stroke. The book, published in 2002, is a relatable story for many who have family member with illnesses or aging family members who need increasing care. “All of us either will be caring for relatives or be cared for by relatives at some point and there’s a lot of issues to deal with and surmount and just face in whatever way you can. It’s just life,” said Sulzer. Sulzer’s style evolved once more after the release of Mom Comes Home. He injured his back in 2001 and found himself less mobile than before. To occupy his time as he recovered, he dove into the works of Emily Dickinson. Sulzer found that reading Dickinson’s literature was one of the few activities that took his mind off his back injury. “Basically Emily Dickinson’s work was the only thing I could read that took me away the pain—her writing is so intense and so good that I got totally enthralled,” Sulzer explained. Inspired and curious about Dickinson’s life and work, Sulzer formulated the concepts for his third book, The Voice at the Door. He decided to write this novel based on research, letters, and poems surrounding Dickinson’s life. The book is a fact-based novel that tells of a love story between Dickinson and a noteworthy Presbyterian preacher, Charles Wadsworth. “I felt such an inner focus, even though I didn’t know what would happen or anything [as I wrote the novel]. I felt I had read so much of her poetry and I wanted to incorporate some of her style in the flow of my work, and I just felt that I was able to find that balance,” said Sulzer on his time writing the book. Sulzer’s most recent book, The Card People, is a whimsical, sci-fi advencontinued on page 19

ture that was influenced during one of his experiences while teaching. Sulzer was on a hiking trip with the fifth grade class of Nantucket New School. The kids requested a bedtime story and Sulzer wove a tale together about card people and their enemies, the scissor people, both main elements within the book. The students enjoyed the story so much, they suggested that he make it into a book for young readers. Bringing his two chosen professions together, Sulzer wrote a draft, and had those fifth-graders read, critique, and give their feedback on the book, chapter by chapter. Part one of a trilogy, The Card People is ideal for readers age nine and older. Sulzer enjoyed the three decades he spent teaching youth on Nantucket, but empty pages were calling him to write. Now in his retirement, he’s able to devote even more time to his passion. Sulzer’s books are available to purchase on-island at Nantucket Bookworks on Broad Street and Michell’s Book Corner on Main Street.

Constellations from page 4
along, making choices, encountering chance, all other options are possible, and exist on another plane. Trippy, right? This is just the premise of Constellations, the latest play to run at The White Heron Theatre, from now until September 23. Often referred to as the “rom-com for astrophysicist,” this play, written by a then-28-year old British playwright Nick Payne is a buffet of possible scenarios in the classic story of boy-meets-girl. In this two-person production, we watch as Roland and Marianne meet at a friend’s barbeque. Varying scenarios are separated by a brief darkening of the stage; one in which Roland is married, and his wife is talking to friends across the way, and alas, in another, with flickering chemistry, the two are single, and the meet cute is official and complete. The audience then enjoys vignettes into the relationship as it could possibly evolve – with a drunken first date, then an awkward one, followed by a combative one, and a loving one, too. Pitfalls of infidelity are then addressed, with one partner guilty of it, then the other, followed later by a clumsy marriage proposal with a sweaty and nervous Roland on one knee, juxtaposed by a smooth and stalwart Roland sweeping Marianne right off her feet. White Heron veteran actor Brian Krinsky seamlessly perfects the role as Roland, both boyishly lovable and caring, while Caitlin Clouthier astonishes as Marianne, sweet, funny and smart. Directed by White Heron’s own Lynne Bolton, this performance undeniably hits home at the introspective question of how our experiences are affected by our own emotions on any given day, and by just how very different our reality could so easily be. Although at first unfamiliar in its form, it soon becomes impossible to look away, especially as the characters rapidly change position under the darkening light of the stage to perform their next possible reality. This play may be just the reason why we as individuals should return our focus to the stage; the well beaten path of theme in cinema is so well traveled, it is nearly crumbled macadam, but if we allow ourselves to follow these strangers into the forest of unexplored thought, we emerge with a map, showing footpaths into unexplored realms of the heart and mind. To purchase tickets for Constellations, visit Whiteherontheatre.org.

are no pesticides or herbicides used and it is managed according to the vegetative and lunar cycles prescribed by the biodynamic calendar. They use organic compost and manually harvest the grapes when it does come time for picking. Although the major part of the vineyards is planted to Mourvèdre, the Château Pradeaux Bandol Rosé is composed of Cinsault as well as Mourvèdre. After a short maceration on the skins, in order to extract a light color, the juice is fermented at low temperatures to retain freshness, fruit and bouquet and aged in cement tanks. It is one of the richest of the rosés of France, and perhaps the most serious wine in this category. The younger vines of the domaine at about 25 years old are utilized to produce this rare rosé with staying power and exceptional complexity. Think of pairing this with salmon, cassoulet and (once autumn arrives) leg of lamb. Château Saint-Maur ‘L’Excellence,’ Côtes de Provence CRU CLASSE Rosé 2015: Located just 10 km from Saint-Tropez in the picturesque Provençal village of Cogolin, this estate is one of only fourteen properties that can officially designate themselves Crus Classés based on an evaluation of the estates' history, winemaking and cellar reputation and overall vineyard quality since 1955. It is at the foothills of the impressive Maures mountain mass, where it is sheltered from the winds but enjoys a mild maritime influence that tempers strong summer temperatures, This top wine from the estate, hence named “L’Excellence,” is ripe and powerful. Made from a traditional Côtes de Provence grape blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, this attractive silver-pink colored wine is beautifully ripe and fruity on the nose. Peach and pear fruit flavors, along with a citrus burst at the end, add an attractive lift. The flavors of red fruits, peach and apricot bring enjoyment and aromatic complexity to this balanced and structured rosé offering. The ultimate wine for an excellent adventure. Keep in mind that not all Rosé is created equal. This means that based on the climate and soil where it is grown, the mélange of grape varieties used for blending, along with production methods in the winery, all have an influence on the final outcome of this delicious category of wines. Be adventurous as summer comes to an end as now is the time to drink that bottle of rosé that you forgot about from last year. Like finding a genie in a bottle, you will be amazed at how delicious it can be with that extra year of ageing in the bottle. Cheers!

Featured Restaurant: Crosswinds
Where the Locals Go Some of the best advise we’ve heard when it comes to finding a restaurant with great food and great value is to “go where the locals go” — Crosswinds Restaurant & Bar. If you’ve flown on or off Nantucket, you’ve probably seen this eatery at the airport. But it’s not just a place to stop for coffee and snack when your flight is delayed: this is a destination for many island residents looking for a bountiful breakfast, fast lunch, or affordable dinner out. On Wing Night, you might actually have trouble finding a seat! Crosswinds serves continuously from 5:30 in the morning until 9 at night. And, there’s plenty of free parking, a real plus on busy weekends and in-season. Indoor and outdoor seating is offered at Crosswinds. It’s a bit unusual to dine on a patio just a few yards from the tarmac, but it’s one of our favorite spots for breakfast and discovered that the patio is warm, bright, and nowhere near as noisy as you’d think. Most of the planes land and depart a good distance away and are fun to watch—you won’t have to entertain any youngsters you’ve brought along, they love to see the planes. Inside, there is a roomy and comfortable dining room that has recently been renovated. Separated from the dining room is a bar with counter seating and a couple of tall tables. We know a number of die-hard fans who say it’s a fun place to watch the game. The day starts earlier at Crosswinds then at any other island restaurant, and breakfast continues well past lunchtime, so whether you get up early or are on “vacation time,” you can have breakfast most of the day. In fact, Crosswinds even has a section of their dinner menu called “Breakfast at Night” featuring three of their morning favorites. They serve it all—from a hearty Breakfast Sandwich to a Smoked Salmon Benedict. They offer short stacks and tall of Buttermilk Pancakes and Thick Cut Brioche French Toast, and just about every version of eggs you can think of...Over Easy, Scrambled (try their flavorful Portuguese or Greek Scrambles), Steak & Eggs, Hash & Eggs, Breakfast Burrito, and generous Omelettes with a variety of fillings Go at 8 am, call it brunch, and indulge in a Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or Screwdriver from their bar (from 11 am on Sundays). For a light morning meal, there’s fruit and berries, yogurt and granola, bagel and cream cheese, oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar, and coffee how you like it. At 11 am, soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, and lunch entrees are added to the offerings. In addition to a Black Angus Burger, B.L.T., Tuna Salad, Grilled Cheese, and Grilled Chicken Sandwich, lunch also features a Classic Reuben, a Chipolte Pastrami Melt, Philly Cheese Steak, a Fish Sandwich, Chicken Pot Pie with puff pastry lid, Cobb Salad, and a very popular and well done Beer Battered Fish & Chips. “Classic American comfort food” is how the dinner menu was described to us. We think it’s apt though it leaves out some of their creative specials, like the “Taste of India” and Chef’s Showcase offered every Saturday evening. In addition to those Saturday night specials, Monday is their Home-Style Chicken Dinner Special for just $10.95; Tuesday is Steakhouse Sizzle ($12.95
for a 12 oz Prime Rib or a 10 oz. NY Strip or an 8 oz. Filet with mashed potatoes and vegetable). Arrive early on Wednesday nights: their Endless Pasta Night ($8.95 for all you can eat Alfredo or Bolognese) AND Wing Night (50 cents apiece for their jumbo wings) House Salad is very popular. Thursday Night is when they serve the Crosswinds Famous BBQ Ribs (half rack of pork ribs with cornbread, potato salad, and coleslaw for just $11.95); Friday Night they serve Fish & Chips for just $9.95, and you’ll see half the island there; and their Sunday night special is a Traditional Turkey Dinner with all the fixin’s for just $9.95. Make sure you’re hungry when you dine at Crosswinds—even with the affordable prices, their portions are very generous! We started with their House Salad, bigger and better than most house salads. It’s served in a large shallow bowl filled with a nice mix of field greens with just enough tangy balsamic vinaigrette to flavor the greens without making them soggy. Sweet dried cranberries, crunchy toasted pecans, and lots of blue cheese are tossed throughout the salad, not just sprinkled overtop. Fried Calamari is another top choice to start your meal, and in portion big enough to share. The rings and tentacles have a ligh, crisp breading, and are cooked just right so they’re tender. Two toppings are drizzled overtop— a tangy garlic aioli and a sweet Thai chili sauce. The sauces are also very tasty on the salad of fresh field greens that is tucked underneath. under Appetizers is a Grilled Chicken Pesto Flatbread that is large enough to be a meal! The flatbread is spread with tasty basil pesto and parmesan, then topped with loads of chicken and fresh sweet grape tomatoes. The kitchen then fire roasts it till the edges are crisped and serves it sliced and ready to share. We were at Crosswinds Grilled Chicken Pesto Flatbread on a Wednesday, and the dining room quickly filled with customers clamoring for their Jumbo Wings. At 50 cents apiece, they must go through hundreds every Wing Night! The kitchen sent us out an assortment to try. They come in four versions: very spicy Buffalo (with Frank’s hot sauce), smoky-sweet BBQ, tasty Teriyaki, and (our favorite) Honey Sriracha that starts out sweet and end with a spark of heat. Each wing section was moist and meaty with crisped edges and served with crunchy celery sticks and either ranch or blue cheese dressing. One of the chef’s specialties is Crosswind’s Orecchiette Pasta, comfort food taken to the next level! For this dish, the chef combines the pasta with sauteed pancetta, mushrooms, baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil in a luxurious cream sauce with a whisper of chipotle. This pasta dish is delicious as is, but we recommend that you order it with sauteed shrimp that are plump and perfectly cooked. You also have top option to order it with Orecchiette Pasta grilled chicken or NY strip steak. Fish lovers will adore the Atlantic Salmon served at Crosswinds. The fish is beautifully cooked, nicely seasoned, and served with a very good white wine garlic butter reduction. Served alongside are jasmine rice and an assortment of seasonal vegetables (we had tender-crisp green beans, carrots, and sweet grape tomatoes). We adored the Crosswinds Fish and Chips dinner! fresh Atlantic cod, beer-battered and fried till golden brown outside and flaky are inside, served over tasty fries with sides of house made tartar sauce and cool, crisp coleslaw. The final entree we sampled is their Grilled Rib Eye (cover photo). The slab of beef arrived Atlantic Salmon cooked a perfect medium-rare, with a luscious char around the edges. We were grateful for the extra red wine veal reduction and poured it over the mashed potatoes served alongside with grilled squash, carrot, and green beans. Few people have room for dessert after a meal at CrossFish and Chips winds, but if you do, they offer a changing selection of sweets. If they have it, don’t hesitate to order the sinfully good Rich Double Chocoate Cake. Or you can just order a sweet Tranquili-Tea or fruity Crosswinds Cooler from the bar.

Attracting Birds from page 9
sands of dollars on new optics. Let the weeds be. As the fall flowers and grasses begin to fade, the seeds, fruits, and other reproductive structures are delectable bites for our feathered friends. Don’t be tempted to mow that lawn or weedy patch. Let it whither until winter. As many birds begin or are in the throes of migration, these weedy tidbits become important food resources. And you want any excuse to be a bit lazy, right? Water, water, everywhere? Make sure your bird baths or other water features are clean and full. Migrants often need to fill up on water as well as food. While the weather has been rainy of late, double-check that the water that remains in baths is clean to reduce disease transmission. Don’t rake the beach! If you’re a shorebird, fall is the perfect time to snag invertebrates from piles of seaweed washed up on the beach. Keep the eel grass and other seaweed piles intact as they remain another tasty treat for Sanderlings, Willets, and other shorebirds. Better yet, take a walk and clean the beach to remove plastic debris that may be inadvertently ingested by curious and hungry shorebirds. Create, don’t remove, brush piles. Similar to not raking the beach, rotting leaves and other brush make great habitat for arthropods, worms, and insects that many birds eat. Birds that prefer habitat on the ground, such as darkeyed juncos, tree sparrows and white-throated sparrows, will use brush piles for roosting at night and for protection from predators. Just put fall trimmings, branches, twigs and leaves in one corner of the yard where it is less intrusive, but will create some cover for the birds. Watch the weather. During fall migration, birds are moving every day. However, the volume of birds is affected by local and regional weather patterns. Wind circulation patterns around highs and lows impact the movement of migratory birds. The ideal time for flying often occurs the day after a cold front passes – northerly winds, dropping temperatures, rising air pressure, and clearing skies are good migration conditions. Look for tail winds which is when birds will move en masse. When this happens, get your binoculars ready and head out. Get to know a few good birders. The best thing I ever did to increase my own bird list was to get to know some really good birders. They keep you motivated, take you to the best secret spots, and may teach you a thing or two about identifying all of those “confusing fall warblers” as Peterson puts it. Once fall really sets in and we get into winter, birding friends also help you forget how cold your fingertips are while trying to spot a Glaucous Gull or a Snowy Owl. Need help meeting some great birders? How about some local and regional experts? There is a Birding Nantucket Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/birdingnantucket/) that is great for sharing photos and information about the latest sightings. Sign up for an eBird account (ebird.org/content/ebird/) through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. You’ll be able to see others’ checklists, where the local hotspots might be, and even who is seeing them. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation leads bird walks every Wednesday morning at 8am (llnf.org). The Maria Mitchell Association also leads walks Tuesday mornings at 7am (mariamitchell.org/calendar). As the weather gets colder, a morning bird group will start meeting on Sunday mornings at the Nantucket High School parking lot. Check the events calendar on Nantucket.net for these and other listings.
