Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation The common daffodil, Narcissus sp., is a symbol of spring throughout North America. On Nantucket, we embrace the yellow blossom as a reminder that spring will (eventually) come to the island. Beyond the fanfare of Siasconset and the antique car parade on Main Street, few of us reflect on what the daffodil plant actually is and where it came from. Milestone Road blooms yellow and white with the colorful flowers. These were planted by homeowners, Nantucket Land Bank staff, as well as countless boy scouts and other volunteers. They can be found naturalized in fields, lawn edges, roadsides, and other human-disturbed sites throughout southern New England. However, daffodils are not native to our region. Where in the world does the daffodil grow wild? Where has this plant evolved from? First off, let’s talk about the plant itself. When we say “daffodil,” we are referring to species in the genus Narcissus which also includes paperwhites and tiandrus. These are perennial predominantly spring plants of the Amaryllis family. There are approximately 50 species of daffodils and with horticultural selection and breeding, there are thousands of cultivars of these species. When Carl Linnaeus was classifying species in the 1700s, he used “Narcissus” to describe the delicate, yellow flowers of these strong spring plants. The name comes from the youth of Greek mythology. Narcissus was a beautiful and vain young man who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. He was so mesmerized that he fell into the pool, drowned, and, according to the tale, turned into a flower. I suppose on Nantucket we feed the Narcissus ego by dedicating a festival to the blossom named after him.

After long sharing his own world with the friends and family around him, Jerry Daub has traveled ‘round the Point into the next realm. Jerry was born in eastern Pennsylvania where, under the watchful eyes of his eternally patient mother and encouraged by his entrepreneurial father, he learned to spin and to weave at Goschenhoppen Folk Festival and to never stop asking questions. He spent many days exploring with Jessie, his friend and “brother from another mother.” He found his true home in the 1960s when his parents dropped him off on the island of Nantucket under the wing of Barbara Bowman to take a summer class at the Nantucket School of Needlery. He was adopted into the Flanagan clan on Nantucket, becoming brother-forlife to Daniel, Liz, Catherine, and Charlie, and got into and out of a variety of youthful escapades with Danny, Liz, Barry, and a cast of Jerry in high school in the 1960’s, feeding other island characters, often in his 50s Chevy. (No, he was not the one the seagulls on the docks who streaked Main; he was the getaway driver. And, yes, he is the one who drove off the cliff at Cisco.) “I spell my name Danger.” continued on page 39

WAVE Now Offers Year-Round Rides Nantucket has a rich transportation history. Whaling ships, steam powered ferries and the Nantucket Railroad in the 1800’s, and the first airplanes began landing just south of Commercial Wharf during the First World War. Fast forward to 1995 and the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA) began providing the island’s first public bus service and continues to provide reliable transportation for island residents, visitors and workers. Rebranded in 2010 as The WAVE, the bus service has undergone a number of changes and improvements throughout its 22 years of operation. However, perhaps the most significant change is planned for 2018. Historically The WAVE has been a seasonal service, operating from May to mid-October but a study completed in 2016 by the AECOM consulting group, looked at the feasibility of extending the bus service year-round. After much review and consideration, the NRTA Advisory Board and Board of Selectmen recently voted to approve transitioning the service from seasonal to year-round and plans are now underway to make that happen. According to Transit Administrator Paula Leary, “We are very excited about moving into this new phase of service to the island.” She continued, “There is tremendous support throughout the community and we are currently well into planning routes and schedules that will continue year-round.” WAVE ridership has increased 11% since the rebranding in 2010 and continues to provide a reliable and efficient service for Nantucket’s diverse population. NRTA Chair, Dawn Hill Holdgate is optimistic that expanding the availability of bus service will be a very positive benefit for the island. “2018 will be another historic year for transportation on Nantucket. We are looking forward to making sure that getting around the island will soon be much easier for year-round residents and workers.” The WAVE will resume service and begin their year-round routes this Friday, April 27, with additional routes starting in May and in June. Passes are also on sale: Annual Passes start at $125 and are valid April 27-Dec. 31, 2018 and Summer Passes start at $120 and are valid May 14-Oct. 8, 2018. The NRTA also offers a 31-day pass for $75 that is available at the NRTA Office, 20R S. Water Street. All passes provide unlimited ride on all bus routes.

Spring Sweeps In by Robert P. Barsanti My neighbors are selling their summer place for seven million dollars. The websites tell me that the mortgage on that will break down to a neat 29,000 dollars a month. The house has been improved over the last two years, down to the foundation. It now boasts nine-and-a-half foot ceilings, for the Christmas trees, seven baths, five bedrooms, and a pool in the backyard. Unfortunately, the view from the Upstairs Master Bedroom encompasses the swaying and aging grace of my homestead and its accompanying cars. The realtors have begun to land. They circle around, with landscapers and a makeup brush, identifying that special something that will make the Hedge Funder drop seven million. They cluster together at the front porch, preening, and eyeing us across the street. I suspect they will put a note in the mailbox. Winter arises from the island in a gray funk of clouds and cold, interrupted by wind, rain, and wet snowflakes. Once a week, the clouds will lighten, the air will warm, the roar of the surf will settle and a warm thought rises. Until the wind shifts back into the northeast, the sky starts spitting, and you roll the windows up to keep that warm thought from being sucked out to sea and drowned. Spring calls and tells you it is coming, and then the boats get cancelled. When the boats start up again, Spring lands and wants to see what work was done over the winter. The sky clears, the air warms, and the brown grass burns green. Within a day, buds dot the ends of branches, daffodils push green buds up through the ground, and crocuses surprise through the leaves and trash. Two days later, the clouds blow back in and everything that bloomed must survive. But the fire is lit. Like the rain in the desert, everything blooms. The hedges bud, the swamps green up into marshes, and then yellow splashes in the fading gray both from the daffodils and the forsythia, and the grays of

winter fade into the mud. But not gone. Winter abides, in the shadows underneath the brush and hedges, in the gutters and in memory. It exists only for those who remember and survive. This winter blew. It did things to the shore that winter never did to land before. The Atlantic came rising down bluffs of Sconset and scoured the bankers’ sand out and dropped it on the sand bars and shoals offshore. The harbor rose above the walls and piers, then overspread the downtown feet deep. Behind the Dreamland, two bicycles were locked, left in August, but not forgotten. They became our best barometer as successive storms brought ocean water up to the handlebars. The water has slipped back to its reflective and photographic home in Easy Street Basin. The benches have been replaced, as have the bricks. The restaurants have been swept out, rewired, refitted, and staffed up for another summer of “Dark and Stormy” that lives in a copper mug. Further north, near the yacht club, the sewer lines have been repaired, the road resurfaced, and another brick sidewalk has been built for this summer. The tide line from the once and future floods are scrubbed away in the energetic spring. We have swept away the sand, relaid the brick, and washed the buildings. By July, the island will look as it has always looked—as fresh as a Gin and Tonic. Nantucket, and its realtors, would like to live only in the immortal present of the beach. Out here, I fear we measure time in real estate. The measure of this winter can be found in Madaket, where the stilt house succumbed to time, tide, and reality. In September, it rested atop a set of dunes and gazed on the Atlantic. Then, the storms began chewing up the beach and overtopping the dunes. For several days, the Atlantic sprinted up the sound, then rolled down into Hither Creek. By March, the ocean washed under the stilt house with continued on page 19

As you leisurely stroll down the cobblestone streets of Nantucket, one can only imagine what it was like during the life and times of the historic whaling days of the 19th century. A plethora of stores owned, managed, and operated by women is not new to our island. This is evidenced by the history of the “Petticoat Row” business area, where many of the businesses on Centre Street between Main Street and Broad Street were established by female proprietresses during the heyday of whaling. Some might say that the Petticoat Row of Nantucket was a result of the need for survival. While men where out “on the whale,” the women left behind needed to make a wage to support their families, but also create a financial security in case their husbands had an unprofitable voyage or, graver yet, were lost at sea. This opportunity offered the women a sense of community where they may otherwise have felt lonely, along with a distraction to the possible perils of their soul mates. More importantly, however, is that these women had good business sense, knowing how to work within their means while hiring and working with other women. Nantucket also had a Mariner’s Power of Attorney in effect that further strengthened the influence of women in business. In essence, it was a precursor to today’s power of attorney in which it was a legal document that gave women whose husbands went out to sea legal rights typically denied to women, such as buying and selling property. All of these factors combined ultimately had a direct effect on the economy of the island and therefore how Nantucket was perceived by the outside world. Women today still own and operate many businesses on-island, whether it is selling wares at the farmer’s market, a lovely downtown dress shoppe, or the local wine store. In a slight contrast to this is on the other side of the pond is how the power of mourning the loss of their young husbands changed the face of what we know today as Champagne. In France in the 19th century, women were only permitted to become a CEO of a business or perform other financial tasks if they were widows. Otherwise, they were dependent on either a father or husband. During this time, there were a number of Champagne widows who took over the reigns of their husband’s wine production ventures. Widows in France at this time not only were permitted to manage financial transactions, but they were also respected as business people. In the French language, “Veuve” translates to widow. The name has been used as a moniker for a variety of Champagne houses, from smaller brands to one of, if not the most well-known in the world. At one point, businesses were searching for the widow in their family to use as the face of their Champagne house as the marketing value of having this was such a part of the brand. While people will say “Veuve” in reference to one specific yellow labeled bubbly, there are actually numerous Champagne houses with this in the brand name. Think of it as similar to saying just the word “Château” or “Domaine.” Champagne itself may be delicate and effervescent, but the powerhouse women who managed these houses and made it what it is today were audacontinued on page 20

A Pair of Spring Exhibits The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is opening the 2018 season with a double exhibition: Found in Translation and 2D to 3D. The opening reception is on Friday, April 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. “Found in Translation will be on the first floor and is an exhibition where we’re offering our guests and patrons the opportunity to write brief comments about what they find in the artists translation of their art, or the art that moves them. Upstairs on the second floor, we will have the added benefit of featuring assorted works on paper and three-dimensional pieces,” said curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier. “For the past number of years the gallery has been delighted to offer an early spring exhibition with two distinctly different shows on each floor, which provides a wonderful opportunity for both our artist members and the viewing public,” added Frazier. A stone’s throw from Main Street, the AAN includes over two hundred and sixty artist members who display their work during fourteen different exhibitions throughout the seasonincluding jewelry, oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and some textiles. The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is watercolorist Romana Rainey. Found in Translation will be on display from April 27 to May 7 with the 2D to 3D until May 21 at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. The gallery is open Monday – Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm.

Wild Daffodils from page 3

Well before Linnaeus, daffodil plants were known in ancient civilization and were introduced into gardens in about 300BC. The Greek botanist and philosopher Theophrastus listed and described many of the earliest known kinds of narcissus plants. Daffodils were brought to Britain by the Romans who thought that the sap from daffodils had healing powers. Actually the sap contains crystals that can irritate the skin. All parts of the plant are actually poisonous, especially the bulb. In some cases, poisoning and even death have occurred when the bulbs were eaten after being mistaken for wild leeks. Their apparent bad taste and toxicity may be fortunate in some respects, however, as it means the deer generally avoid them. All members of the genus Narcissus have conspicuous flowers with six petal-like tepals (the outer part of the flower) and the distinctive cup or trumpet-like center. They have a single central leafless hollow flower stem with one to several leaves arising directly from the bulbs. The size and color of these flower parts are highly variable. Daffodils are native to meadows and woodland edges much like what we see with naturalized populations on Nantucket. Specific habitats vary widely with species and varieties, but most prefer acidic soils. They are insect pollinated, but persist with mostly via bulbs. The division of bulbs allows for propagation of individuals. Each bulb unit has a life of about four years.

Vol. 48 No. 1 • YesterdaysIsland.com Once the leaves die back in summer, the roots also wither. After some years, the roots shorten, pulling the bulbs deeper into the ground. The bulbs develop from the inside, pushing the older layers outwards which become brown and dry, forming an outer shell, the skin. Up to 60 layers of skin have been counted in some wild species. With the traditional daffodil form, structure suits function. Daffodils are pollinated by bees, butterflies, flies, and hawkmoths seeking pollen from anthers within the trumpet-like corona. Bees have to completely enter the flower in their search for nectar and/or pollen. The bees come into contact with the stigma before their legs, thorax, and abdomen contact the anthers, and this approach causes cross pollination among plants. After flowering, the daffodil leaves turn yellow and die back once the seed pod is ripe. The fruit capsule contains numerous seeds which are round and swollen with a hard coat. Most species have a total of 36 seeds, but some can have more. Seed dispersal in the wild is generally by wind or passively via passing animals and gravity. The common daffodil is native to Western Europe, namely Spain, Portugal, western France, Morocco, and Italy. While Holland may come to mind, no bulb plant is actually native to Holland. However, it is the home of almost all the hybrids, since the Dutch hybridizers have not only created thousands of new flowers gardeners love, they've developed a huge national industry that supplies bulbs to gardeners worldwide. No members of the Narcissus genus (or the parent plant family) are native to North America, though they obviously do well in many of the gardens in our region. continued on page 18

Wild Daffodils from page 17

NANTUCKET WINDMILL CARS

It is important to understand that many of the original wild forms of these famous flowers look nothing like the garden flowers that hybridizers have created from them. The wild plants are generally smaller and paler than the many cultivars. Some of the wild species are still available to grow in your own garden. Poet’s Daffodil (Narcissus poeticus), for example, is a white species with a Narcissus triandrus growing wild in its native Portu- flattened, but brilliant orange cup. This wild gal. (photo from flicker) daffodil is an ancient one and was first described by Carl Linnaeus in the 1750s. Narcissus jonquilla, the jonquil or rush daffodil, is another wild daffodil native to Spain and Portugal. This small fragrant plant has many small blossoms and one stem and has been used in horticulture as the parent plant for many cultivars. The Tenby daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus ssp. obvallaris), a subspecies of the wild variety, grows wild across southwest Wales. Today's Dutch bulb industry is a true phenomenon in the world of horticulture. Nine billion flower bulbs a year are produced in Holland's modern production fields today. For a visual display of just some of the varieties of blossom shapes, colors, and sizes, check out the 44th Annual Community Daffodil Flower Show at Bartlett’s Farm over Daffodil Weekend (daffodilfestival.com).

regularity, until the backhoes of time smashed it down and loaded it into a truck. Now, the ocean has filled in that pond, buried the beach grass, and swamped an old pier that may have been built by Millie. Spring brings the denial of grass and the erasure of sand. The posts stand amid the ridiculous sand, becalmed and bedazzled by the change. Everyone who has a house beyond the bridge knows what is coming when the flowers fade and the storm clouds return. Not today. Today, the wind has turned to the southwest, the sky glows, and the grass twitches. The golfers patrol the Miacomet fairways, the landscapers mow the bankers lawns, and everything is glowing green and yellow. That evening, I returned to the homestead. My neighbor’s house remained dark, but someone had cleaned the mud and sand from the pool. Two hoses were emptying into the fieldstone hole, under a watchful spotlight and a humming filter. My duty, at the moment, involved the marsh behind my house and within the view of the upstairs master bedroom. Several branches of a Japanese Oak had fallen into my yard during the winter. Someone, who had boots and gray hair, needed to drag them out into the wetlands for natural recycling. I followed an old path among the bushes and puddles until I came to a line of daffodils. They followed the three walls of a basement to a farm house that had been built out here when milk cows were the things you could bank on out on our island. The house had collapsed seventy-five years before I came here, the cellar filled in some time after that. Now, there was a row of cement one foot off the beach grass, lined with daffodils. Flowers out lived the yard, the house, the gardener, and would survive winter after winter after winter.

cious risk-takers and full of ambition. VEUVE CLICQUOT: Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot was born in Reims to a wealthy family. She married young and in 1805, her young husband died suddenly after harvest, leaving her as a 27-year-old widow. She took what was a tragedy in her life and eventually transformed her husband’s Champagne production business it into a global empire. As a pioneer visionary, she developed a technique referring to as riddling that would remove the yeast leftover from the secondary fermentation that occurs in the bottle to create the effervescence. Previously, this sediment was left in the bottle resulting in a cloudy wine. With her creation of the table de remuage, the bottles were held upside down and regularly rotated so that the dead yeast would gather near the actual top of the bottle. Once the sediment had completely settled near the cork, the cork was removed to allow this sediment to be released. Then a small amount of additional wine was added to top the bottle of to its previous amount. Voila! Through her passion and determination, Madame Clicquot then used her business acumen to tap into the European market. Later, she branched out to Russia and eventually the United States where it is most well-known today. CHAMPAGNE LAURENT-PERRIER: While the Champagne house of Laurent-Perrier was originally founded in 1812, it wasn’t until Eugénie Hortense Laurent, who had inherited the property after her Champagne widow mother’s passing, sold the business to Marie-Louise Lanson de Nanoncourt in 1939 that it became known for what it is today. De Nanoncourt’s husband died previously during World War I. Coming from the family lineage of Champagne houses Delamotte and Lanson, it was at this time that she took a great risk and decided to leave the family business to branch out on her own and purchased Laurent-Perrier. She managed to keep the business afloat during WWII as her sons were fighting with the French Resistance. After WWII, her son Bernand de Nanoncourt began an apprenticeship with the family in which he learned every aspect of the business—from winemaking, to vinecontinued on page 21

yard management and sales—eventually becoming Chairman and Chief Executive of Laurent-Perrier. His daughters, Alexandra Pereyre de Nanoncourt and Stéphanie Meneux de Nanoncourt, are the current generation that continue to maintain the quality and reputation of the brand today. BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE: Champagne Bollinger has been in existence since 1829. Many generations later, Elisabeth Law de Lauriston Bollinger married the great-grandson of one of the original founders of this generationally family owned and operated business. Known affectionately as Lily, Madame Bollinger was passionately involved with the Champagne house and had a bubbly wit about her. After the death of her husband in 1941, she saw the House through the war, along with the German occupation of the region. From the 1950s until her death, she keenly marketed and represented the brand internationally in her sophisticated style as she traveled the world with bottle of Bollinger, often nicknamed as just “Bolly.” Here is a famous quote from her in regards to Champagne: “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.” While Nantucket’s Petticoat Row tells the stories of women who were independent and determined and possibly preparing for the worst, Champagne is the story of widows who made the best of what life before them. In both scenarios, the strong, vigilant women not only rose to the occasion, but often outshone their male counterparts in their endeavors.

Featured Restaurant: The Proprietors bar + table

Beauty & Balance by Carl Oscar Olson If you want to maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle, balance is key. We all walk the line between staying active and putting our feet up, eating right and indulging, working hard and playing hard. The list goes on. We can all use a little help along the way, too, so it’s a good thing we have Proprietors bar & table. Located in the heart of town on India Street, the restaurant is charming and rustic without being stuffy. The exposed beams on the ceiling break up the stamped tin tiles, while the merry, modern artwork and locally designed wallpaper bring a lighthearted air to the atmosphere. All of the art, by the way, is for sale. Every room has a different mood, but each is as inviting as the last, and when day turns to night, the Anna’s #4 Cocktail mood changes with it. The food at Proprietors is as eclectic as the decor. In a way, the variety on the ever-changing menu harkens back to Nantucket’s whaling days. Sailors gone for months on end would finally return with not just stories, treasures, and trinkets, but recipes, ingredients, and new techniques from their travels. Who needs bread when you have Pig Ear Fries? Our first dish was some of the best finger food on-island and the perfect starter. Sliced thin and well coated with a Louisiana-style pepper sauce, they are salty, spicy, and mouthwatering. A squeeze of lime holds back the heat, and the micro-cilantro cleanses the palate perfectly (cover photo). We’ve had Bone Marrow before, but never like this. Beautifully plated over smooth river stones, the bone is cut lengthwise and covered with beef tartar, a few light, crisp puffs of beef tendon, and finished with an egg yolk jam. The marrow is warm and smooth and rich, while the cool tartar is peppered with capers and chives, setting each other off in a mind-blowing manner. The yolks bring it home with an unheard of Chef Michael LaScola silkiness. And though we could eat a

Bone Marrow

bag of the puffed beef tendon, hold back: Use them to scoop up all the goodness. For our next plate, we lightened things up with the Asparagus. When set on the table, the aroma of summer filled the air with fresh greens and charred vegetables. The star of this dish is served two ways: grilled whole and shaved raw, yielding a dynamic approach to the vegetable. Mingling in between are gorgeous grilled baby turnips, giving the old cellar root some new life. It’s topped with a soft-boiled egg, blood orange maltaise, and pea tendrils, all sitting on a throne of warm green garlic rice grits - a kind of savory rice pudding. The mix of temperatures, textures, and flavors made this taste of warm weather worth coming back for. The menu, like a lot of other things, is refreshingly different from most other island eateries. Instead of dividing the dishes into categories like soups, salads, entrees, or sides, Chef Michael LaScola (the genius in the kitchen at PropriAsparagus etors) arranges it

from light to heavy, top to bottom, start to finish, beginning to end. Michael and Orla, the minds behind the famed American Seasons, pride themselves on showcasing global cuisine and local ingredients. And there is a clear emphasis on family-style dining, with each dish designed to be shared, though you might not want to. It might be less traditional, but we think it’s a lot more fun. Kimchee Pancake Though not described as such, for our final “starter” we went with a house favorite, the Kimchee Pancake. The flavor of kimchee can be intense and isn’t everyone’s cup of cabbage. But don’t be afraid. The fermented flavor is dialed down and delicious in this dish, served warm and contained within the pancake. It’s covered in succulent Korean BBQ and pulled duck confit. Dollops of cool sesame buttermilk and pickled onions really bring things to life. Proprietors is a lot more than just food. The restaurant boasts an impressively full bar, featuring an immense number of hard to fine whiskies, tequilas, and digestifs. The beer list is hard to beat and aims to please, featuring a wide variety drafts, cans, bottles, and even bombers. The wine list offers multiple Awards of Excellence from Wine Spectator and is not to be missed. House cocktails are something to write home about, too, as the bar crafts many of their own bitters, shrubs, and tinctures. The house tonic is out of this world. That being said, we decided to try a few house favorites (cover photo). The No. 3 was a local concoction of 888 Cran vodka and 888 Can Cordial infused with a lightly spiced peppercorn tincture. A Maraschino liqueur added just enough cherry sweetness. Next up, the eye-opening No. 7. A base of Tequila Blanco get just a shot of fire from Thai bird chilis which is leveled out with a honey-chamomile syrup and lemon. We found the gorgeous garnish of dried chamomile flowers is best stirred in to enhance the floral flavor. Last but not least was the No. 9, the famous seasonal House Bottled G+T. A one-of-a-kind house made tonic and orange flower water gets its soul from Escubac, a gin-like spirit made without juniper. It’s slightly sparkling with an herbal, earthy finish. With a large number of meatless dishes on the menu, Seared Maitake Mushrooms we had to add one more to the order. The Seared Maitake Mushrooms were so meaty and decadent one might not realized they’re vegetarian. Though they looked heavy, the

mushrooms were delicate, yet so flavorful. The miso-onion dip underneath was just as light and made the perfect accompaniment. A few wheels of picked kohlrabi brought just enough acidity to the table, while the sprinkling of nori brought out the best in every component. It’s no surprise this dish was in our top 3 for the evening. There is no shortage of ocean seafood to be had on the island, so when we saw a freshwater fish on a menu there was no second guessing. The Chicken Fried Trout was a real winner with an audible crunch over moist fish. The filet sat on a brilliantly creamy green goddess dressing and the top of the fish was painted with a mustard bacon vinaigrette. The lemon confit meant no need for a citrus squeeze, and the micro herbs on top rejuvenated both the eyes and the tongue. With all of these delectable adornments to the trout, we expected its mild flavor to be lost in the mix, but the fish was still the star. Another one in our top 3 were the Pork Belly Tacos “Conchita Pibil” (a Yucatan style of barbecued pork). The house corn tortillas walked the line between soft and hard shell and had so much flavor for such a simple component. The salsa matcha, an unusual nutty yet acidic salsa, was bold enough to settle down with the fabulously fatty pork, while cotija cheese and cracklins had us wishing there more than two. They might be hard to eat politely, but who cares? There are always special plates in addition to the regular menu, and we would’ve hated to miss the Tagliatelli. Uni, quail yolk, bacon, shredded gouda, and chives sat separated on the house-made pasta, reminding us of a bowl of pho or ramen. We gave the bowl a good stir; the yolk broke and created a velvety sweet sauce that coated every noodle. The smoky gouda and bacon married with the uni, creating something undeniably fruity. All of it was exquisite.

Perfectly seared and sweet, we couldn’t skip the Diver Scallops. They continued on page 24

rested in a rich and wholesome baked potato butter, bringing an earthiness to the plate. A vidalia-bacon jam carried the sweetness of the scallops and the thin, crispy fried potato skins came with contrast. The ramps brought the two teams together seamlessly. Briny, earthy, sweet, and enticing. One of our favorite things about the evening, after the food, of course, was the diversity of people going in and out the door. Casual and classic, upscale yet approachable, and all around inviting, Proprietors draws a wide variety of patrons. What would a meal be without a proper finish? This finale is not listed on the menu, so be sure to ask—no which you matter choose, you’ll not be disappointed! Out of the four options offered the evening we dined at Proprietors, we only had room for two. The Chocolate Pot de Creme is a chocolate lovers dream. This rich, thick treat is covered in fresh whipped cream and chocolate shavings, teamed up with "coffee soil," a Chocolate Pot de Creme kind of sweet, crumbly coffee cookie. In keeping with international influence, fresh, hot cinnamon churros sit beside. Crunchy and sweet outside, lush and creamy inside. On the other side was the Lemon Poppyseed Twinkie. A delicious renovated version of its namesake, this light lemon glazed cake conceals a fresh strawberry sauce. Served with pistachio brittle under a terrifically tart buttermilk ice cream, both were the perfect end to a perfect meal. Leaving The Proprietors Bar and Table, we all felt inspired. The food was so artfully created, plated, and of course, balanced. Lucky to have this gem in our community, we can’t wait to go back. Island Fun & Shopping Cigars Gray Lady Smoke Shop

508-901-9399 upstairs at 2 Union Street

Thurs 2-7pm, Fri & Sat 11am-7pm, call Sunday Fine Cigars & Accessories. We do parties!

Make it big and bold by choosing the CAO Flathead 554 Camshaft for your smoke. Inspired by the cars of yesteryear, Flatheads are a box-pressed collection of cigars named after engine parts. The Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan filler make as much of an impact as the vintage rides they represent. The wrapper is dark chocolate brown, oily, and inviting. The cigar is hand-made with a unique flat-top head; the roll is tight but the draw is nice and easy, slapping the palate with a kick of black pepper. That spice is present on the first puff too, but after an inch of ash it gives way to bittersweet cocoa. After the first third, a rich earthiness rolls in as the cigar continues to burn perfectly even. A classic cigar for your classic car. Gray Lady Smoke Shop is Nantucket’s premier seller of cigars and exclusive accessories. Open for Daffodil Festival Weekend upstairs at 2 Union Street, just steps off of Main Street. AckGrayLady.com

A Man of Many Hats from page 4

He was known to many on Nantucket as a young weaver at what became Nantucket Looms and, later, as a favorite bartender from the 1970s (he loved being a victim of Rollerbar). In the 1980s, he went from assisting his father with Yesterday’s Island to being publisher, updating it and adding new features.

Jerry celebrating Christmas Stroll in the early 1990’s

Long fascinated with computers, in 1994, he brought the Internet to Nantucket when the only other access was a long distance call to AOL. He introduced many islanders to email and the Web, with a client list that grew into the thousands. He created the first locally written Nantucket website. And he installed webcams around the island (we are sworn never to reveal the location of the one that broadcast the approach of the giant spider and the cussing workmen). We often laughed about the day he drove to Dukes Road to help a customer with his computer, knocked on the wrong door, and was greeted by a different and astonished customer with “Jerry, how did you know I was having email problems?!”

He had a special knack with computers, and could fix nearly any problem. He loved teaching and collaborating with Jody Detmer, Mike Alvarez, Ned King, Chris Beaugrand, Chris Johnson, and Tom McGlinn, all of whom became good friends as well as colleagues. His daughters remember him as the life of the party at birthdays and celebrations, and reminisce about his love of photography (passed down from his father) and how ready he always was to go surfcasting, to drive around the island, and to fly kites at Surfside Beach: not just one, but a line of rainbows strong enough to carry him and the girls down the beach. Jerry loved the boaters his daughters gave him on Father’s Day and was rarely seen not wearing one. Jerry had a relentless curiosity about all things and had a broad and deep knowledge of many subjects. He loved to learn by taking things apart and (sometimes) putting them back together, but rarely as they had been. He enjoyed many things including connecting with people, playing all types of games, riding roller coasters and motorcycles, watching bees, creating art out of anything, playing pinball and pachinko, playing strategy games and MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and Earth & Beyond, cold beers with friends, fireworks, bonfires, gadgets, puzzles, picking raspberries with his grandkids, planting garlic and growing other green things, taunting helicopter police, listening to jazz and The Beatles and Pink Floyd and new music, metaphysical chats, taking risks, and breaking all the rules. Jerry will be remembered for his kindness, his youthful and welcoming spirit, his Jerry jokes, his willingness to help everyone, and for always pushing the limits. His wife, Suzanne, daughters Jessica Taryn and Korinna Autumn, sonsin-law Jason and Oscar, and grandchildren Ethan, Anora, and Solveig, miss him terribly, will think of him often, and will continue his legacy with Yesterday’s Island and Nantucket.net. We promise to always try new things and to think out of the box.
