Queen of the Beach Reads Nantucket’s Elin Hilderbrand
FRENCH SOLE 302).' 201
by Rebecca Nimerfroh The year was 1993, and Elin Hilderbrand, the New York Times Best Selling Author and Nantucket year-round resident had yet to pen a single book, nor had she stepped foot on this precious elbow of sand we call home, but she felt a pull at her internal compass nonetheless, and called the local paper to send her the classifieds section. “It was before the internet!” Elin laughs as we sit together at a table at Lola41, where over delicious chicken salad sandwiches Elin tells me the story of how she became known as “The Queen of Beach Reads” and one of Nantucket’s most recognized residents. “I called the numbers and found a room in a house on Hooper Farm Road,” Elin says, who had the summer off from her teaching job in West Chester, New York. “I thought it was heaven on Earth!” Her very first week on island, Elin was introduced to the man who would become her husband, and the father to her three children, Cliffside Beach Club Manager Chip Cunningham. They married in 1995, and, after leaving her teaching job in New York, she and her husband settled into island life, enjoying summers on Nantucket, and winters backpacking the globe. Having always wanted to be a writer, Elin applied, and was accepted to the world-renown Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she spent the next two years surrounded by fellow writers, cornfields, and not much else. “I was miserable in Iowa,” Elin says. “They had free therapy and I went every week. Basically I was crying because this was not Nantucket. My husband and my best friends were all at home where there’s good restaurants, and everyone is fancy, and everything is very elitist, and I like it that way!”

Signs of Spring by Dr. Sarah T. Bois Director of Research & Education for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Springtime on Nantucket is a special time when muddy roads and icy sidewalks make way for budding crocuses and nesting song-birds. Spring officially begins with the Nantucket Daffodil Festival that has always been held by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce on the last full weekend of April. They may need to reset their clocks, however, considering that earlier springs are happening regularly and daffodils are popping up earlier and earlier every year. In 2016, a Nantucket Garden Club member told me she was researching late-blooming varieties of daffodils to ensure she would have blooms for the 2017 Daffodil show. I think this may be an increasing trend. Aside from the fun festivities associated with daffodils, there are many other signs of spring on the island worth looking (and listening) for. If you keep track of what you see and hear around your own home or while you’re on Nantucket, you could be starting a record of “the signs of spring.” Studying and recording seasonal observations is called phenology. There are many things to note as spring arrives, but here are a few that many Nantucketers revel in as true signs of the changing season: Spring Peepers – When they emerge from hibernation (generally in March) they are one of the first audible signs of spring. These tiny frogs that are members of the tree frog family congregate in shallow vernal pools with the males singing in harmony. For such a tiny frog, they have quite the loud, booming voice. Their calls are most vocal at dusk and can be heard from almost any small water body or pond. If you can’t get out to a conservation property, just head over to Hatch’s Package store on Orange St. and listen to the chorus from the parking lot. Osprey Return – Another early sign of spring, Osprey, also known as fish hawks, generally return to the island by mid- to late March. After spending continued on page 12

Bright Beacons of Civic Pride Nantucket’s blooming daffodils are an island-wide vision of sunny flowers that delight all. But they are more than just cheery beacons of the warm weather and sunshine to come. The history of the daffodils and what they have come to mean are a continuing story of community collaboration and civic pride. It all started in the 1970s with the late Jean MacAusland. She is widely credited with the inspiration and the substantial initial efforts in planting daffodils along our roads as well as instituting the attendant activities such as the antique car parade and the Nantucket Garden Club’s annual Daffodil Show. Today one of the champions of continuing and expanding the blooms across the island is Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON), a non-profit organization devoted to easing the burdens on patients and families facing critical illness and end-of-life challenges. Initiated in 1982, originally as Hospice Care of Nantucket, PASCON provides a vital service to the island community. PASCON’s team of interdisciplinary professionals and volunteers cares for individuals with life-threatening illnesses with physical, psychological, social, and spiritual care to patients and families from the time of diagnosis onward. And they do it all for free thanks to the fundraising efforts of the PASCON Foundation and the generosity of the Nantucket community. Families and individuals living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses face many challenges. These illnesses take a toll on the whole person – body, mind, and spirit – and patients and families need the extra layer of support that PASCON provides, especially with the added constraints of living on an island. PASCON works in concert with the Nantucket Cottage Hospital and other human service agencies to provide much needed care and support to these neighbors, and it is all done at no charge to those receiving the services. Efforts include providing pain control and symptom management, individual counseling and support groups, and even Reiki and mind body continued on page 18

The New Year by Robert P. Barsanti The new year begins when the grass does. Sometime, after enough rain, and enough sun creep on through the fog banks, the grass returns to life and goes green. Crocuses and daffodils pop sometime before the easter eggs and the lawn, but they run a false flag operation. It’s all hope and chocolate for the flowers. When the grass pops, the calendar turns, the new phone books come out, and a fresh year comes with a steaming dozen donuts. Every new year comes with paint, a fresh sign, and a heavy layer of hope to spread in the flower beds. In the timeless way of islanders, we don’t recognize or remember the names of the new stores and restaurants. We pick our favorite year and then resolutely repeat that year over and over until our selfpreservation outlives our self-deception. Because the island doesn’t allow too much change to erode the downtown and the moors and beach remain fairly static over the decades, you can walk around in 1987 for a long time. Same surf, same beach, same dunes until you stumble over the Architectural Digest Mr. October 2014 and get a snoot full of particle board. When I was a young man, I felt that the beach could be my calendar. Nothing really changed on the beach…and the changes that did happen were hard to mark and measure. The tide came in, the tide went out and the occasional storm came in and ripped everything up in a brown fury. But, sand meets ocean in a timeless mix of fluids. You only know the difference between a December surf and July one when you actually get ankle deep in it. Year to year, the beach looks pretty much the same. In my early years on island, there remained a street of houses along Cisco beach. Then, over the course of the next ten years, the Atlantic claimed all of them and left the occasional PVC pipe and cinder block. But my sons don’t remember the house, nor does anyone under forty. The beach looks the same as it has, except I have changed. I know how old I am, I know how many years I have been driving up, and the beach just reminds me that everything gets swept out to sea sooner or later. Main Street warms and energizes in the season. After the D.P.W. takes the Christmas trees down, the year winds down and the only cars found on the cobblestones after eight o’clock generally head home when the Gaslight’s movie lets out. Then, as the shadows shorten and the sun creeps up, the stores re-open and the landscapers park in the crosswalks. In April, the clerks stand with the expectant pleasure of seagulls. But the pleasure of a warming sun on the bricks doesn’t really come from the weather as from the people. And we have had several bad years for the people on the benches downtown. At best, they have shipped off for more affordable shores, and at worst, they have met the Pilot face-to-face when they have crossed the bar. Again, the curse of age isn’t that you see things that are there, but you still see the things that aren’t anymore, be it people, stores, or 25 cent wings. The new year changes most reluctantly for me, on the golf course. My favorite golf course on island has a winter membership that allows duffers like me to patrol the fairways and rough (and high grass) that only the exceptionally well-heeled and well-madrassed get to search and wander in the warmer months. As the weather grows more bitter in the fall, the course opens up to the likes of me and the deer. Time passes slowly on the course. The sand trap on the first hole hasn’t moved in twenty years, nor has the green or the tee. When you stand on the first tee, with the Atlantic far out over Shimmo and a brisk north east wind in your face, it could be 1987, 2007, or 1957. Age doesn’t add much to a round of golf, instead it tends to subtract as you become more aware of the bumps and limitations of the course. My youth was spent deep in the brush and high grass; middle age is much more pleasant in the rough or even on the fairway. If the wind is right and my memory skips a beat, I hit golf shots that I never would have hit in my lustier days. Near the end of the afternoon, as the sky edges purple, you can stand on the eighteenth tee and listen to the surf. Someone has built new houses and someone else has added onto the roofline across the way, but time has slowed to a vegetative creep in the wind. But it hasn’t stopped. The calendar still turns. Within a few weeks, I will be politely shunted off from the course and sent back to other places. Membership requires more time and money than one middle-aged man can reliably count on. The great hope of youth fades into the world of never as I get older. I will never be a member there. Nor will I ever be a member at many of the other island clubs. The calendar and the checkbook, with that same vegetative creep, has pushed me away. Nantucket is not what it was; the ocean always wins. It will wash away all of us either to more earthly shores or otherwise. I am not sure if it profits us much to wait for that to happen. Instead, like the grass, we should just glow, grow, and grab hold at the day that we have. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow will be wet, one way or another. But today, the wind has died, the sun has come out, and we can finally go green.

HOSPITA AL THRIFT SHO OP 88TH ANNUAL OPENIN NG DAY Monday, May M 15 at 10::00 a.m. 17 India Streett
Whether you are trekking to ‘Sconset for the Ultimate Daffy Lounge or heading for some family entertainment in the Brant Point neighborhood, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce’s annual Daffodil Festival Weekend is host to an array of activities for enjoyment by all ages. Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie offers a peek into what you should have packed in your picnic basket, no matter where the party might lead you. A Bottle of Bubbly: The entire island is covered with picturesque, brilliant daffodil blooms. What better way to celebrate this sign that spring has arrived (and winter is over!) than with a bottle of bubbly? Champagne Veuve Clicquot easily flows like water through the cobblestones of downtown Nantucket this time of year. Consumers can identify this bottle by its brightly colored, trademarked “Yellow Label.” Keep yours chilled and fashionable at the same time by receiving a free matching Champagne Bottle Cover with the purchase of any bottle of Veuve Clicquot this Daffy weekend (and while supplies last) at select wine retailers! When hosting an extra thirsty crowd (or have some graciously welcomed but uninvited party crashers), you might prefer to serve a quality sparkling wine worthy enough to arise to the special occasion instead of traditional Champagne. CHAMPY is a lovely selection for just that. Founded by Bostonbased entrepreneur and two-time Emmy Award winner, Jenny Johnson, Champy hails from California and brings pizazz to any picnic scenario. BONUS: It also makes a distinctive and delicious base ingredient for sparkling wine cocktails. Beer in a Can: A fun, festive holiday weekend such as this calls for brightly colored outfits, crazy hats and wildly themed tailgate parties on the streets of ‘Sconset. Why not have your beverage (and its packaging) be part of the celebration as well? Sip local by enjoying Cisco Brewers’ “Summer of Lager,” available in bright green cans that might get lost if left in the grassy lawn. This refreshing, satisfying Bohemian style pilsner also has a yellow sunflower image that screams “Drink Me Daffy Weekend!” Not all beers happened to be made from hops and barley. Welcome to Farmer Willie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer. This “Ginger with Soul” is a creation started by the eponymous owner in his Cape Cod kitchen several years ago. It is made from glorious ginger, complimented with lemon juice and nutmeg. This naturally gluten-free product (if you happen to care about that) only comes in a lightweight can and is delightfully refreshing on its own or mixed with your favorite cocktail recipe that typically calls for non-alcoholic ginger beer. Don’t forget to protect your willie with a beer koozie. Quality Wine Opener: Have you ever seen the video-gone-viral of some drunk British bloke who opens a bottle of wine with his shoe? Avoid being that guy this weekend and practice the Scout motto of Be Prepared instead. Pulltap’s manufactures the most widely used corkscrews of wine professionals and wine lovers in the world. This easy-to-use double-lever opener will have your mother-in-law’s Chardonnay open in no time without you suffering continued on page 17

the island. Nantucket Shadbush is a small shrub named after the island where it is locally abundant despite its rarity elsewhere. The name “shadbush comes from the plant’s coincidental blooming with the historical running of the shad (a local fish species). The small, white flowers would be unremarkable in later spring and summer. However blooming first (before leafing out) among the remnants of winter gives this plant a special place as a harbinger of spring. Nantucket Shadbush can be found along the south coast and in many conservation properties with a mix of grassland and low shrubs. Woodcock – One of the most unique birds both in terms of look and habit, the Woodcock is a small, stout member of the shorebird family found primarily among the pine forests and shrubs. This expert in camouflage can be elusive visually, and is more often heard. Springtime brings the Woodcocks mating season with amazing aerial displays at dusk. The male will perform a “sky dance soaring high and then plunging down to the ground while making a fluttering sound with his wing feathers. His distinctive MEEP call while on the ground is unmistakable once you know what it is. To hear, and potentially catch a glimpse of these elusive birds, take a walk at dusk in the Middle Moors or at Head of the Plains where the pitch pines meet the grassland. Keeping track of signs of our Nantucket spring helps us see changes over time as nature responds in different ways to earlier springs and warming temperatures. Maybe the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce will think about moving the Nantucket Daffodil Festival to coincide, once again, with the prime bloom-time of the flowers themselves.

from doing the usual cork extraction dance. Beware of cheap, flimsy, not-sowell made knock-offs of this product that come nowhere close to the standards of the original genuine corkscrew. Proper Drinking Vessel: Go-GOVINO-Go! Go anywhere on Nantucket in style with a pair of these perfect wine glasses. The beach, the boat, the backyard, your best friend’s basement - you name it. These not-your-average “glasses” are super sustainable: no toxins from the BPA/BPS-free plastic they are made from, totally reusable time after time, and recyclable when you do decide to part ways. They are also shatterproof if accidentally dropped, which doesn’t happen often because they have a handy indent for your thumb and better grasping. This is the first and only unbreakable wine glass of its kind to be so widely accepted by the wine industry. The flexibility of a GOVINO allows you to showcase all sorts of beverages, including beer, bubbles, cocktails, sparkling water and beyond. Hangover Cure: You are proactive in your party planning skills to ensure a good time had by all at the main event. Shouldn’t you care enough about your guests (and yourself) to take it a step further and ensure everyone is able and willing to do it all over again at Sunday Brunch the next day? Enter RESQ Water. The all-natural ingredients in this beverage help your body to get back on track when consumed while drinking or as your last drink of the night. Celebration should never have to be followed by a day of pain or misery. Whatever plans you devise for the weekend as you gather with your favorite island companions to celebrate this annual tradition, most of all don’t forget to stop and smell the rosé… er, I mean flowers! More on the rosé front at a later date.

therapies. Volunteers often play a crucial role in patient care and the services offered. Back to those daffodils. Jean MacAusland spearheaded the planting effort with David Champoux of Champoux Landscape. It started with planting thousands of bulbs along roads and in areas visible to walkers, bikers, and motorists alike. The hardy bulbs were a perfect choice for the island. Naturally
Planting daffodil bulbs thanks to J&M Landscape and Champoux Landscape spreading and shunned by browsing deer, they continued to return and proliferate over the decades. the effort has just kept growing. Patches of brilliant yellow could be seen along longer and longer stretches of bike paths and roads. PASCON joined the effort in 2007, when board members working on their annual Dreamcatcher event decided daffodil planting would be a wonderful way to honor and recognize the invaluable efforts of the family caregivers and the PASCON patient care volunteers. And with a whole new cadre of community members becoming involved in this annual planting effort, the scope of PASCON volunteerism has grown. Champoux Landscape continues to play an active role alongside J&M Landscape Services, and new planting is an annual fall rite for the energetic students, parents, and staff of the Nantucket New School. Between 5,000 and 7,500 bulbs are planted each year, thanks to the generous donations from Champoux, J&M, and others over the years. As the island has grown with new development, so has the opportunity to find new places for those daffodils to bring their cheer. In addition to those early daffodils still popping up every spring, new batches have been planted along Milestone Road, Hummock Pond Road, Sconset Village, Amelia Drive, and Old South Road. PASCON has added more than 50,000 bulbs to the island landscape since 2007. Since the bulbs and materials are donated, any money raised in tribute to the family caregivers and the PASCON patient care volunteers goes directly to PASCON programs and services. It is very satisfying to see a million plus bulbs come up to brighten the landscape every spring. Not only is it a beautiful sight to behold, but they also are living symbols of how a community comes together to create something special in the landscape and in the lives of island residents facing some of life’s most harrowing challenges. These daffodil blooms each spring serve as a symbol of renewal and hope as well as a reminder of the hard work and dedication of PASCON volunteers and of the entire community. Look for the banners marking the new clusters of daffodils that now bloom because of PASCON. All are welcome to join in the planting in November, check pascon.org for details. While you explore the website, click on the link for Dream Tickets. The winner of this fundraising raffle gets the concert experience of a lifetime: 4 seats at any concert anywhere, anytime. Airfare and hotel are included! Only 200 tickets will be sold, so don’t wait. The winner will be announced at PASCON’s Dreamcatcher Dinner & Auction on June 4.

she says with a smile. And perhaps it was this very sadness and longing that motivated Elin to begin a novel which took place on her beloved island so many miles away. “Finally I started writing The Beach Club,” Elin says, “Because I was like, I need to start writing about Nantucket. It was like therapy.” In one of her last classes, an instructor introduced the class to an agent named Michael Carlisle. Having personal ties to the island of Nantucket, he asked who in the class was writing a book that took place there, and Elin raised her hand. Michael gave her his card, and asked that when she was finished her manuscript, that she send it to him. Elin returned home, finally, completed her novel, and sent it to Michael, and upon reading, he offered to take her on as a client. The rest would soon be history, as Elin would become a figurehead for the beach-reads nation, vacation-bound women everywhere, or simply those who wished to be. On the heels of her 18th book, Elin embraces her celebrity status graciously, always offering an autograph or friendly conversation to fans who recognize her and approach her to say hello. “What’s the alternative?” she laughs. “I don’t take it for granted.” At the time of our meeting, Elin is fresh off the “Weekend with Elin Hilderbrand” hosted by the Nantucket Hotel, a three-day weekend in January in which fans can get a tour of the island hosted by the writer herself during which the places in her beloved books are identified, along with several other activities like a book signing, wine and cheese meet-and-greet, and even a trivia game, where the winner will have her name appear in the next book. Elin explains that for her devoted fans, the experience was like a visit to the Galapagos. “When you get there you take a million pictures of the seals, and then by the seventh day you see the seals and you are like, ‘Why would I take a picture of the seals?’ That’s what its like, like day one with the seals. They are freaking out—and I’m signing away, and everyone wants a picture. It’s so nutty.” Elin is happy to report that the 175 women who came to the island for continued on page 20

this special weekend brought commerce to otherwise relatively dormant businesses, like local shops, restaurants, and even were responsible for the sale of $2,500 in Nantucket Whalers gear, both t-shirts and sweatshirts that benefit Nantucket Public School Sports Teams, in a record 45 minutes. “It was amazing,” Elin says, explaining that in subsequent years she hopes to include even more businesses in the festivities. As it turns out, Elin is one powerhouse, always dreaming of her next novel, of which she writes on a legal pad she keeps in her oversized purse. A paragraph written in her car as she waits in the school pick up line, or a scene written from her lounge chair by the pool at The Nantucket Hotel, Elin writes her next best-seller, word for word, longhand. “I’m never not working,” Elin says. “Even when I’m sitting here with you, it’s working.” But the workhorse that she is was seemingly almost derailed, when a lump discovered in her breast was diagnosed as cancer. Having to undergo a double mastectomy at Mass General Hospital, Elin says, “It’s basically a trust fall. What else can you do?” Ironically, this diagnosis came at the same time that Elin’s book The Matchmaker was released, a novel about a woman with terminal cancer. “I had done all this research. I had done events for the American Cancer Association, and I was even planning on cutting my hair, and I’m so into this character, and I’m really feeling this, and two weeks before the book came out I was diagnosed. I was like, this is so weird.” Elin was invited to come on the CBS This Morning with Gayle King to talk about the experience, something she now does every year before her next summer beach read is released to the eager public. Now back in perfect health, Elin says simply, “I survived, and everything is fine.” For Elin, who grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, New England summers were the epitome of happiness. Her family vacationed on Cape Cod, but at the age of 16, when her father, Robert Hilderbrand was tragically killed in a small plane crash, these summers ceased to exist. Elin, who longed for those summers, and for the memory of her father, vowed to find a lifestyle continued on page 21

that would be conducive to beachside life. “I always felt like I wanted that summertime back, so that was part of my reason for moving to Nantucket year-round.” Having called Nantucket home for over twenty-three years, it is clear she still finds joy in the simple pleasures this island offers. On any summer day, Elin says she can be found at the beach at Rams Pasture, because it is so quiet, or poolside at The Nantucket Hotel, her “home away from home.” “Nantucket is the standard by which all New England towns should be judged,” Elin says with a smile. “Because everything about this place has been done properly.” And if one knows anything about Elin’s work as an author, they could easily argue the same about her as well. Featured Restaurant: The Proprietors bar + table An Evening of Cuisine, Cocktails, and Conversation Even when we aren’t working, we have a particular way of eating when we go out to dinner that we call “featured restaurant style.” We share everything. Sometimes we pass the plates; sometimes we just put them in the middle of the table and tuck into a bit of this and a bit of that. It’s a very sociable approach, conducive to merry conversation that makes the cuisine the center of attention. Plus it’s great way to taste everything! Offering more than two dozen widely varied Pretzel Fritters choices of inthe craft cocktails now offered are prepared with hard-to-find or seasonal intensely flavorful gredients, making them “limited editions,” which, Worgess says, helps her dishes, the menu stay creative. at Proprietors bar If you prefer wine with dinner, Orla’s selection of international bottles high& table is ideal for lights small batch producers, so even the most jaded oenophile may discover this style of dining. a new favorite at Proprietors. mustard seed for pops of heat. Shavings of smoked pork jowl are served between. LaScola’s Housemade Chorizo, another “snack” was also superb! The sausage had more flavor than heat, and we loved the enhancement of a slightly smoky Housemade Chorizo brandade and the contrast of a crisp, chilled fennel salad (suggested pairing: Full Sail Session Lager). Our favorite snack of the evening was the Vermont Crottin Goat Cheese, a testament to the difference small farm sources can make. Presented warm on a small cast iron casserole, the cheese is snuggled next to a slightly sweet bell pepper and onion jam, with a pair of freshly baked, flaky chive biscuits (suggested pairing: Louis de Grenelle Sparkling Rose of Cabernet Franc).. Omnivores all, our team appreciates the challenge of dining out as vegetarian, so we were pleased to see nearly a dozen menu choices for this lifestyle and delighted to discover that Chef LaScola puts the same passion and creativity into these sensational choices. The English Pea Toast was better any bruschetta-style dish we’ve tasted. Freshly baked sourdough is topped with a thick layer of crushed peas topped with dollops of tangy labneh, and finished with a sorrel salad and sliced kumquats. Approaching it took some planning, but the medley of vibrant flavors was well worth it! (suggested pairing: Cocktail #9: Seasonal House-bottled G&T : Ethereal Gin+Violet Syrup+House Lemongrass Tonic+Violet Bitters) The beauty of the Beet Salad was second only to the subtle sweet flavors of the golden, red, and purple beets arranged with delicate buttermilk mozzarella, cashews, and dried dates (suggested pairing: 2015 Les Vins de Vienne "Les Cranilles" Cotes du Rhone). We nearly had to pry the dish of Baby Bok Choy, grilled, served with tempura shiitake, caramelized baby turnips, and drizzled with a flavorful yakitori sauce from the hands of a teammate who

declined to share. (suggested pairing: 2014 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis) As we worked our way down the menu at Proprietors, the dishes increased in heartiness. The Flat Bread, another vegetarian choice, would be too much for one but is too good to stop at one slice. The housemade bread on which this is built is soft enough to absorb some of the luscious flavors but firm enough to support the generous topping of ricotta, herb tahini, dried figs, pistachios, spicy harissa, and mint. The different tastes and textures combine to create an exuberant ensemble. We’re definitely coming back for this! (suggested pairing: 2014 Priest Ranch Grenache Blanc, Napa Valley) If you’re looking for a more typically sized entree at Proprietors, read the menu from the bottom up. We were impressed by the tenderness and taste of the Spanish Octopus, its ocean-fresh flavor paired with earthy delights of a robust tomatillo salsa and charred shishito pepper. (suggested pairing: Cocktail #7: Mezcal+Ancho Reyes+Pineapple Syrup+Lime-Jalapeno Salt) Chef LaScola takes inspiration from both Italy and France for his Cannelloni of Braised Short Rib, its meaty filling wrapped in a delicate crepe and topped with taleggio “fondue,” sweet peas, and black trumpet mushrooms. (suggested pairing: 2014 Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley) In the spirit of the usual being unsual at Proprietors, the dish simply called Scallops (see cover) is a stunning interplay of delectable elements: plump sea scallops perfectly seared, crusty rounds of morcilla sausage, juicy segments of blood orange, slivered almonds, and spring ramps on a white bean puree (suggested pairing: The Bruery "Saison Rue" Farmhouse Ale). Every evening a handful of desserts are offered that usually include a Root Beer Float and a Sundae or Banana Split. We shared a rich Chocolate Pot de Creme topped with ginger snaps, chocolate bits with cinnamon churros on the side and a lucious Roasted Strawberry Brioche Bread Pudding. If you’ve dined a bit too well, as we did, you might want to drink dessert. Proprietors bar & table offers a wonderful whisk(e)y selection, American bourbon and rye, especially including a range of Pappy Van Winkles, and many options for aged Japanese whisky. And if you’re feeling adventurous, try one of their many bittersweet amari. We’re looking forward to another evening of cuisine, cocktails, and conversation at Proprietors, returning to share the 18+ dishes we didn’t try and perhaps repeating the small plates we loved. Cigars Gray Lady Smoke Shop Open Daffodil Weekend: Friday, Saturday, Sunday Fine Cigars & Accessories. We do parties!
508-901-9399 upstairs at 2 Union St
Make it big and bold by choosing the CAO Flathead 554 Camshaft for your smoke. Inspired by the cars of yesteryear, Flatheads are a box-pressed collection of cigars named after engine parts. The Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan filler make as much of an impact as the vintage rides they represent. The wrapper is dark chocolate brown, oily, and inviting. The cigar is hand-made with a unique flat-top head; the roll is tight but the draw is nice and easy, slapping the palate with a kick of black pepper. That spice is present on the first puff too, but after an inch of ash it gives way to bittersweet cocoa. After the first third, a rich earthiness rolls in as the cigar continues to burn perfectly even. A classic cigar for your classic car. Gray Lady Smoke Shop is Nantucket’s premier seller of cigars and exclusive accessories. Open for Daffodil Festival Weekend upstairs at 2 Union Street, just steps off of Main Street. AckGrayLady.com

Vol. 47 No. 1 • YesterdaysIsland.com
Daffy Style The last weekend in April is when everyone on Nantucket, from those whose usual garb includes overalls and workboots to those who typically dress in designer duds, to don whimsical hats and dress Daffy. The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the celebration of spring that is Daffodil Festival Weekend, encourages fanciful costumes with their Children’s Parade, their Daffy Hat Pageant, and their tailgate picnic at which participants fully engage with the festival theme, which this year is “We All Live in a Yellow Sunny Dream.” There’s even an opportunity on Daffodil Festival Saturday to daffily adorn your four-legged friends and enter them in the Daffy Dog Parade to benefit Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals. For those who prefer to photograph rather than participate, Nantucket Community Television (NCTV18) is challenging all videographers, both new and experienced, to enter their Daffy Film Contest. Videos should be 3 to 10 minutes long, must pertain to the Nantucket Daffodil Festival, and must be royalty-free. Full rules are at NantucketCommunityTelevision.org. Deadline to enter is 2 pm on May 6. Yes, there are prizes. For three videos of Daffy days past, visit our Nantucket YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiWSnru5-z0
