Daffy Is Back on ACK
A variety of activities in several locations are planned for an in-person 2022 Nantucket Daffodil Festival that is sure to be particularly festive after two years of pandemic cancellations. On Daffy Saturday, April 23, the festival fun organized by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce begins at 9:15 am, when dozens of antiques cars and some antique motorcycles, vehicles and drivers all decorated for Daffy, line up on Main Street in advance of the Antique Car Parade. The staging remains in place until noon, giving people 2.5 hours to view the vehicles, visit with friends, and slip out to Children’s Beach for activities the Chamber has planned at that venue. At 10 am on Saturday, Daffy fun at Children's Beach starts with the Daffodil Hat Pageant followed by the Daffodil Children's Parade showcasing bicycles, wagons, and strollers that kids and their families have decorated for Daffy. After these Chamber signature events, there will be more family fun at Children’s Beach that includes a NanPuppets Performance, a visit from Barnaby Bear, and giveaways. At 12:30 pm, the Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals (NiSHA) will hold their Daffy Dog parade. There are so many events on Daffodil Saturday, that you'll want to plan an itinerary that enables you to see them all! At 12 noon, the vehicles on Main Street parade to Siasconet for the Tailgate Picnic. With parking at a premium in ‘Sconset and spots reserved for parade participants, be prepared to park a few blocks away and walk to ‘Sconset’s Main Street to stroll along the picnic route. Most of the picnics have entertaining themes and many participants don creative costumes. A few will share their picnic treats with passersby, but that is not a given and there is typically no food for sale during the picnic in Siasconset, so bring your own basket if you want to enjoy a picnic lunch. Live music often livens up the Daffodil Tailgate Picnic. The Nantucket Garden Club's famous Daffodil Show—which started this festive fun 46 years ago—opens to the public on Saturday, April 23 at 2 pm. Held in the greenhouses of Bartlett's Farm, this display of more than 700 daffodils plus daffodil flower arrangements and photographs of daffodils is truly a sight to behold! The show continues on Saturday until 5pm, with a free NRTA shuttle from the Greenhound Building downtown to and from Bartlett’s Farm on Saturday during the show. On Sunday, April 24, the Daffodil Show is open from 10am to 4 pm. The Daffodil Show is free to all, with donations to the Garden Club welcomed. The Nantucket Daffodil Show is approved by the American Daffodil Society. To see photos and videos of past Nantucket Daffodil Festivals and events, visit DaffodilFestival.com.

Access to quality medical care is key to keeping a community healthy, particularly on an island where, without a hospital, inclement weather could prevent a patient from getting urgently needed care. Nantucket’s first hospital was founded in 1912 in a homestead on West Chester Street. In 1957, the hospital’s facilities were moved to its current location on Prospect Street. As the island population grew and more sophisticated medical services were required, it became clear a new hospital was needed. A capital campaign to build an upgraded medical facility on Nantucket was launched in 2013, and by the time the new hospital opened to patients in February of 2019, $120 million had been raised. The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital was debt-free and financed entirely through private donations—not a penny of taxpayer dollars was used. It was an achievement unprecedented on Nantucket Island. Among the many donors, small and large, one couple stands out as having led the charge: Bruce and Elisabeth Percelay. Bruce Percelay is known by many on Nantucket for his expertise in real estate and marketing. Founder and chairman of The Mount Vernon Company, on Nantucket, he publishes N Magazine and owns two top-rated boutique hotels downtown. He enjoys boating, tennis, and cars and promises his team will bring their “best game” to the 2022 Nantucket Daffodil Festival Antique Car Parade. The Percelays divide their time between Nantucket and Boston, but it’s Nantucket that has captured their hearts. He and Elisabeth spend a good bit of their time here in philanthropic endeavors. His parents introduced Bruce to Nantucket when he was just five years old: “my parents took us here frequently on vacation. I started spending a lot of time on the island in the 1990s, and I was smitten,” he explained. “Something about the intimacy of Nantucket was appealing to me. The scale of it was the perfect antidote to living in Boston—a city I love, but still a city. Nantucket is a throwback in time. There’s a simplicity here: you can ride your bike everywhere…you can leave your keys in your car…you still have a lot of trust in your neighbors. You don’t worry about crime as you do in urban areas…And I love boating!” continued on page 16

Sounds of Spring by Robert P. Barsanti
Spring is loud. Winter has its silence. Snow, of course, when it falls, hushes the landscape in a cascade of white noise. The winds will howl, the wires will moan, and in the distance the waves will crash. But as the storm passes, the silence rises out of the ice and frost. I have spent the last two years in an extended winter. Oh, we would go to the beach or work on a roof or buy some hamburger at the store, but every trip outside of the bubble required protection and a pass. We masked up, separated ourselves, and returned to the warm support of the sofa. Out here, in the winter, the isolation vacation slipped over us easily. Sliding a pane or two of glass between the world wasn’t difficult. But Spring comes. It arrives with noise and song. At night, as Orion slips over the Vineyard, Connecticut, and points west, the frogs bark out lusty peeps. The deer, hungry for the new shoots of hedge and garden, step out of the froggy dark. The bunnies follow with suicidal lunges into the headlights. By dawn, the birds take up their own lusty ballads, while the peepers slip into silence in the rising brightness. The crows, the cardinals, the red wing blackbirds, the chickadees, and the swifts all set about their romantic calls, as if each one was singing his species’ version of the “Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.” On the new Nantucket, some restaurants have opened long before Daffy days. Our weekends are full of visitors: they wish to walk the beach, poke about in the moors, or beat remorseless into the wind on a bike. Others are coming for one of the few weekends when they can actually stay in their own house before the rental season, now poking into April and May, sends them off-island with checks and shopping lists. The neighbors have come. I would say that they are early, but they don’t see the same schedule. The prep for the summer once began around Memorial Day. But, as the great engines of commerce have been engaged on God’s Favorite Sandbar, the old schedules have faded into the old newspapers. They are cleaning for the spring, eliminating the spiders, hiding the mouse turds, and blowing the leaves away with a hundred decibel hose and backpack. Guests and renters will follow shortly, followed by Instagram followers and TikTok dancers. For an old man, April is the cruelest month. The dark of winter forces you back into the familiar warmth of your eternal and unchanging indoor life. But Spring calls you to a world that has evolved past you, waved, and turned into Cisco Brewers. The old vistas and views have been interrupted by plywood and cedar shingles. In between storms, the workers come off the Cape and pick up the saws and nail guns. Houses are lifted, spun, then expanded, just as they have always been. For an old man, each new construction is a landmark obscured. The winter calls back to us, promising to unwind the changes of money and time. Nonetheless, Spring announces itself, over and over again, note after note. Every sunset comes later and later, every dawn comes earlier and earlier. The daffodils and crocuses have pushed their way out of the familiar dark and have opened onto a gray world of mud, clouds, and delicious puddles. The great engine of spring has lit the green fuse once again. The multiplicacontinued on page 18

Flowering Festivals Are Blooming Early

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation When the Nantucket Daffodil Festival began in 1975, organizers were looking for a way to celebrate spring and bring some life into the island’s shoulder seasons. That first festival was held on May 2nd. In 1980, the Nantucket Daffodil Festival moved to the last weekend in April, where it has remained ever since. What better symbol of the resiliency of the Nantucket people after a long, cold winter, than a daffodil blossom? Beautiful and delicate on the outside, it can weather any sudden storm Mother Nature can dish out. Daffodils are resilient enough that as temperatures warm with global climate change, they change too, many varieties blooming earlier than ever before. Research from around the world has shown that many spring blossoms are experiencing peak flowering dates earlier on average than historic norms. The flowering times are also somewhat unpredictable given the erratic nature of warming and increased storm events. These factors combined make predicting peak blossom of your favorite flowering plant more difficult. And if predicting peak flowering determines when to hold a particular flower festival, then there’s a lot riding on accuracy. Who wants to show up to a daffodil festival when the lilacs are blooming? Flower festivals around the globe are responding in unique ways. The oldest known flower festivals occur in Japan, where cherry blossoms are celebrated as a symbol of spring, but are also culturally significant. The tradition of cherry blossom viewing, known as Hanami, goes back thousands of years. Records of peak cherry blossom timing began around AD 800. These records show that after being a static calendar fixture for centuries, Hanami started to change at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. According to researchers at Osaka University, last year cherry blossoms peaked earlier than they had for more than continued on page 35

As the Garden Grows, So Does the Gardener by Greyson Keller Spring moves fast, But gardens are forever. Summer is the show, But the night is clever. Autumn exhales, And the sun gives ovation. Winter is dormant, And together they are creation.
When I was little, I was surrounded by gardeners. My mother learned from her mother, and my grandmother from her mother. My grandfather would drive an old Kubota and forever maintain the rock walls on a small farm the family had in Westport, MA. We spent all our holidays on the farm. Thanksgiving was definitely a favorite of mine growing up. All the cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends and acquaintances took treks with the pack of dogs down the long winding driveway to the pond, just so we could traverse the rickety-rackety bridge. We kids would hop the stone walls, dodge cow pies, and race to the water’s edge in search of treasure that had washed up. I remember my cousin Milicent once found a sea horse completely intact. What a day! On the way back up to the house, there were often ripe pears dangling from the trees. I was just big enough to climb up and collect a few each time. My first tooth was lost whilst blissfully biting into one of those pears. Thinking about it today, it was an idyllic setting to lose a tooth: sun low in the sky, pears dangling in the dimming light, and me, perched on a boulder below, bleeding from my mouth, pear in hand smiling from ear to ear. As I grew older, the sheer ecstasy of romping round the farm began to wear off. The more dignified years of my early teens enabled me to ponder the surroundings from a different perspective, as really, a different person. The whole property, although a farm, was beautifully landscaped. The immediate surroundings of the main home was divided into outdoor rooms. There was a room for morning coffee, an area for lunch, a seated space for afternoon tea and biscuits and, of course, there was a hidden garden. I was immersed in gardening and landscape design without even realizing. My great grandmother would spend hours in the hidden garden, which was really a large potager, complete with a koi pond, teak benches, and obelisks to give height and structure. There were pea stone paths leading to openings in hedges—the odd window in the hedges giving way to a view borrowed from the broader landscape. I can still remember the mystery of what might lie beyond those hedges. There were hard lines and soft plantings. The sound of trickling water floating along to the faint wind chime in the distance. There were strategically placed statuaries that brought life to the theatre of the landscape. All senses were on high alert. Rock walls outlined the rolling fields and created borders and backdrops in the garden, and perennials with a beautiful rhythm of heights, textures, and bloom time. All four seasons had an interest that not only didn’t feel forced, but felt integral. It was as if the gardens had been laid out by a divine designer. Everything

felt at home: there was a sense of place. I began to understand that the tractor rides weren’t just for the pure pleasure of riding on a tractor with the wind in your face and the sun on your neck, but rather a necessity, to complete a job. That didn’t subdue the magic of the moment or the whimsy of my wandering. If anything, it ignited it. All of a sudden, I realized that it wasn’t just God or Mother Nature that created the overwhelming sense of place that I experienced on the farm. It was us. It was the people who tended it. That meant that even at home, in our tiny, rented apartment on Nantucket, we too, could create a beautiful sense of place. We could create meaning in the mundane. We could develop the drab, invigorate the environment. We could design our gardens, no matter how small. From that moment on, I tried to turn balconies into botanical wonders, porches into paradise, and apartments into arboretums. This was my way of making the Nantucket shuffle feel a little more like home. It's the classic tale of while in search of my grandmother's garden, I found my own. To me, sense of place is the feeling of not only being exactly where you are, but wanting to be nowhere else in the world. There are moments that, much like a butterfly, flutter by, so when they happen, pause and soak them in. They can catch you off guard and may be as little as seeing the green of a seedling first pop through the soil in the morning, hearing the birds sing, sway and dance in the wind, or watching all the laughing daffodils as the antique cars drive by honking their horns. This weekend, when you are sowing seeds or picking weeds, try to take notice of the sense of place you can create. Maybe it’s a nook that could use a bench for contemplation or a spot in the sun that might benefit from a birdbath. Do you possibly have space for a small pond to encourage wildlife to come and frolic? Add a sculpture by your favorite artist or create a sculpture of your own. Try to develop a space or outdoor area that provides opportunity for theatre. Excite your senses with the smell and taste of fresh herbs, hear the mellow tones of a wind chime or the trickle of water as it flows. Plant trees, shrubs and perennials with different textures to feel. We’re still early enough in the spring to take the time to plan some of this out. Take a few quick measurements, grab a ruler and pencil, and scribe the outline of the space on some graph paper. Make a list of what it is you want in and from your garden. Do you want your garden to be productive with veggies or flowers? Do you want it to just be a tranquil place to sit and unwind? Do you want to have a shaded area to give shelter from the summer sun? Possibly the opposite, a place to worship the sun? Whatever it is you want from your garden, make the time to plan it out, you’ll thank yourself later. Spring moves fast, but gardens are forever. Not every task needs to be completed: much better to do half of the tasks well, than all tasks with half a heart. If you think about it, each of us only has maybe 80 or 90 springtimes in our lives. Some of which are swallowed up by childhood and during others we may not be as active as we once were. Use your time and watch the seasons melt into each other as you develop your space. Notice where the sun is during winter, then again in summer. Notice the microclimates from season to season and plant accordingly. As you are doing all this, time passes, and as the garden grows so does the gardener.

Portraits from the Past
Most visitors expect to see portraits of stiffly-posed sea captains or stuffy businessmen in a museum. However, Nantucket’s history is more than white whaling captains and wealthy merchant families. Nantucket Historical Association’s collection contains thousands of painted portraits and studio photographs of people from many parts of the island’s diverse past. Opening Daffodil Weekend is Island People: Portraits and Stories from Nantucket, an exhibition of more than 100 images of islanders from the past in the Whaling Museum’s Williams Forsyth Gallery. This exhibit will draw from the NHA’s collection of painted, photographic, and silhouette portraits to highlight both famous and lesserknown Nantucketers whose life stories intersect with the themes and currents of the island’s history. Exhibit highlights will include the earliest known painted portrait of a Nantucketer; an exceptional tintype of a leader of the island’s 19th-century Black community; portraits of children with their pets; likenesses of millers, innkeepers, tailors, mothers, sailors, and sweethearts in the NHA’s collection. Michael R. Harrison, NHA’s chief curator & Obed Macy Research Chair said, “Individuals presented in this exhibition represent as broad and diverse a range of island people as possible...We hope the human face of the island’s past will inspire visitors to remember their family stories and how they relate to Nantucket.” Opening Memorial Day Weekend is the much-anticipated exhibition of paintings, textiles, bronzes, jade items, ceramics, porcelain and more from the collection that Nantucket residents and world travelers David Billings and Beverly Hall Billings have gathered over 50 years. Most pieces included in the show are being shown publicly for the first time, and the NHA is thrilled to host this exhibit. Included will be some of the earliest known pieces of earthenware from 5,000 BCE and porcelain that dates from the Qing Dynasty. Among the many captivating objects is a pair of exquisite gold finials inlaid with rare kingfisher feathers, a selection of Chinese snuff bottles, Tibetan and tea ceremony objects, a large Butsudan shrine, a Jin Rickshaw, and an articulated diorama of a Peking opera. A Jade body suit burial cleverly concealed will round out this exceptional exhibition. "This exhibition offers an extraordinary and rare opportunity to examine works of art that reveal Asian culture right here on Nantucket. It...can broaden all of our perspectives," states NHA Board President Chip Carver. Plan your visit and purchase tickets at nha.org.

White Heron Theatre Company of Nantucket has an exciting schedule of shows to celebrate its 10th anniversary season, including Dial M for Murder, a killer comedy that preceded the classic Hitchcock film and features Tony Awardwinner Celia Keenan-Bolger. The season will also include two highly anticipated new works that were canceled last summer due to a COVID-19 surge as well as a modern masterwork about an American icon. Additionally, White Heron is partnering with Nantucket Comedy Festival to offer “The White Heron Comedy Club” on Friday and Saturday nights in season. Later in the year, A Nantucket Christmas Carol, White Heron’s popular adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, will return for its last revival until 2024. “We have a blockbuster lineup to celebrate our 10th Anniversary season on Nantucket,” said White Heron Artistic Director Lynne Bolton. “We continue our commitment to new work with the world premiere of See Monsters of the Deep and a North American premiere of The Half written by “Game of Thrones” actor, Richard Dormer. Tony winner Celia Keenan-Bolger returns to star in the classic play Dial M for Murder. We will wrap up with a tour-de-force performance of Thurgood, the story of Thurgood Marshall, America’s first Black Justice of the Supreme Court.” The Half, directed by Michael Kopko, premiers June 26. This enjoyable piece about life in the theatre follows an actor during his preparation in the 30 minutes before curtain, also called “the half.” In his attempts to coax himself into the performance of a lifetime, the actor relives the highs and lows of his life and relationships. One of the hits of the 2012 Edinburgh International Festival, The Half is humorous and enormously entertaining. “The Half is a brilliant, funny work that we have been working to bring to its North American premiere for 10 years,” said White Heron Producing Director and Co-Artistic Director Michael Kopko. “I'm grateful to be working on this wonderful piece with such a gifted and accomplished actor.” Performances will continue in repertory through July 17. In repertory with The Half will be See Monsters of the Deep, a world premiere continued on page 20

The colors of spring on Nantucket are the focus of Earth & Sky, the Artists Association in-person exhibit now open in their Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street. Running concurrently on the second floor of the gallery is Works on Paper, an exhibition open to all island artists that will feature collages, fine prints, mixed media, watercolors, pastels, anything produced on paper. “We truly do not know what people will bring in for the Works on Paper show, but the possibilities are endless,” said AAN artistic director & curator Robert Frazier. “We are delighted to offer this early spring exhibition with two distinctly different shows on each floor, providing a wonderful opportunity for both our artist members, island artists, and the viewing public,” added Frazier. Both exibits in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery will be open through May 23. Located in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District, the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday,11 am to 5 pm, closed Sundays & Mondays. Opening on April 23 in AAN’s Big Gallery upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf is a exhibition of gems from the association’s Permanent Collection entitled The Long Way Home. The Permanent Collection began with the AAN founders, who saw the need for documenting Nantucket’s art colony history. They also imagined the collection providing a visual context for the association’s history while offering a precious heritage for the future. April 25, the AAN’s newest online exhibition Float Your Boat will go live at nantucketarts.org/art. “The title Float Your Boat was chosen given the season for boating is fast approaching...we thought it a clever spring play on words,” commented Robert Frazier. “These curated online shows have been so well received we are delighted to offer this opportunity to both our valued artists, as well as giving those in far reaching places the chance to purchase some wonderful local art,” added Frazier. Works will be added throughout the exhibition, and with nearly 300 artist members, the range of work will be impressive. Online work will include oils, watercolor, pastels, mixed media, ceramics, photographs, textiles, and some jewelry.

Bruce and Elisabeth have two sons, William and Charlie, both born at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “My wife is Dutch: in Holland a lot of people have their children at home, even today. When we discussed where to have our kids, we looked at the maternity ward [on Nantucket], and my wife said ‘this looks really nice.’ There was more personal attention than if we had our kids at a major hospital in Boston, and the infection rate is much lower photo by Kit Noble Photography here than in a big city medical center. It played out exactly as we hoped… in fact, I wanted to stay an extra night: they were serving salmon and the food was so good and we were so

comfortable.” The Percelays take active roles in supporting the communities where they live. “We try to roll up our sleeves,” as he puts it. From 2003 to 2005, Bruce was a driving force when the Nantucket Historical Association reconstructed their Whaling Museum. “The Whaling Museum has a real special place in my heart because I had a chance to help build it.” When it came time to launch the capital campaign to build a new hospital here, Bruce and Elisabeth were at the forefront, chairing the campaign, participating on the Board of Trustees, and encouraging donors. “It was an intense involvement for y e a r s . . .T h e number [to be raised] was daunting. This was the largest capital campaign for a community hospital in the United States. The first issue was to overcome doubts that it could be done. Early on it was very conceptual: getting peocontinued on page 17

ple to feel the sense of immediacy and reality early on was difficult,” Bruce explained. In 2016, the Percelays further demonstrated their dedication to the cause with a substantial gift of $10 million dollars to the NCH capital campaign—then hospital president and CEO Margot Hartmann called “a game-changer.” “When we decided to make a commitment to the hospital, it was a turning point. When you become a donor yourself, it is a lot easier to ask people to give. Once it started to build momentum, it did not stop.” Not only did the NCH capital campaign raise enough for the new medical facility, there is money remaining for new staff housing units to help address the island’s affordable housing crisis. The new hospital meets hurricane design specifications to withstand winds in excess of 185 mph and is certified as a LEED Gold v4 building. In recognition of their generous gift and their key roles in the endeavor to build the new hospital, a major portion of the building—the part that includes the emergency room, surgical suite, and inpatient rooms—has been named the Percelay Pavilion. Bruce and Elisabeth are modest when asked about the naming, saying that they agreed it would be a wonderful statement to their children: “We are very fortunate in life, and we’ve worked very hard. It’s important to us to show our children that you don’t just work for ourselves: you work to leave the planet better than you found it…We want to show them by example.” “To be involved in building a new hospital that will help people and perhaps save someone’s life…it has left an indelible mark on me and on Elisabeth…We supported the hospital in a significant way, but what we got back is immeasurable.” The Percelays continue their involvement with Nantucket Cottage Hospital: “we feel vested in the hospital, and we feel vested in the community. We want the hospital to be as good as it can be.” This year they are event chairs of the 25th Annual Boston Pops on Nantucket fundraiser. August 13, 2022 will be the first time since the pandemic began that this iconic island event can again be held in-person. “We’re going to pull out all the stops: it will be quite a night,” commented Bruce. Recording artist and actress Skyler Wright, who was raised on-island, will open the evening with our National Anthem, and guest vocalist Marc Martel will bring the music of Queen to the stage on Jetties Beach. Tickets to the 2022 Boston Pops on Nantucket will be available in May at nantuckethospital.org.

tion of the years and the buds bursts forth with twice as many daffodils this year, but only half as many as next year. They shove through the gray hedge, pop up in the dark puddles, and overwhelm the careful beds that they had been placed and arranged in. In our backyard, one tossed daffodil from ten years ago, has multiplied into a small yellow troop blooming underneath the blackberry hedge and scrub oaks. Beyond the careful landscaping and over the piles of waste grass and leaves, Spring pushes out yellow and green. They have engulfed us and their weekend: we might as well have a Daffodil month now. They line the roads, flood the yards, and punctuate the spring in one long fertile ellipsis. The only salvation from the burgeoning yellow life come from the daffodils’ only natural predator on Nantucket, the road crew. Life beguiles us and draws out of out pandemic sealed homes and personalities. In a warm southern wind, the rooster tails sail across the sky, and the daffodils nod. After long isolation and silence, the croaking and singing push of life nudges us on, without our masks, our social distance, and our doubts and suspicions. The world melts and we stand in the fecund mud, watching another yellow bud burst. On the Sunday boat, I looked up from a book and beyond my earphones to a swelling bloom of young lacrosse players. They clumped together, stared at pictures, drank seltzer water, then burped and laughed and burped again. In sneakers and socks and tights and hats and yellow tank tops with a picture of the island and a lacrosse stick, they nudge, poke, and wiggle into tight corners. Eight of them circle the end of one table, then a three-inch high stack of UNO cards comes out and the game commences. They bark, they shout, they laugh, and the bubbling sap of noise spills along the floor of the boat until we are stuck in it. Amid the noisy slapping, we watch another clump of flowers bloom in the spring. In the end, we make way. Spring will shove us aside, no matter what rules we make or what careful gardens we shape. It stands before us, with a laughing, triumphant, yawp of “Uno!”

written and directed by Mark Shanahan from a concept by Mark Shanahan and Steve Pacek. See Monsters... tells the story of Morton Plank, who ventures out in his small boat named Courage to confront a mysterious sea monster lurking in the Nantucket Harbor. He soon becomes part of an infamous prank pulled by the eccentric Tony Sarg. This delightful fantasy harkens back to the innocence of a simpler time. Performances will begin on June 29 and will run through July 20. “Nantucket in the 1920's and '30s was a very different place from the island of today,” said Bolton. “See Monsters... takes a journey back in time to the Nantucket we knew as kids. It’s a wildly entertaining story with the mystery and romance of The Summer of '42 as well as a coming-of-age tale that explores the innocence of a forgotten time." At the heart of the season will be Dial M for Murder by Frederick Knott and directed by Mark Shanahan. This classic comedic thriller follows Tony and Margot Wendice. Tony has discovered Margot’s affair with a crime-fiction writer, so he sets out to take his revenge and inherit her vast fortune. In true Hitchcockian fashion, plans go awry to comedic and thrilling consequences. White Heron’s production will feature Celia Keenan-Bolger (2019 Tony Award for To Kill A Mocking Bird and currently in The Gilded Age) as Margot Wendice. Performances will run from July 26 through August 11. “One of our favorite actors to grace the White Heron stage is Celia KeenanBolger,” said Bolton. “Celia is back this year to lead the company in Dial M for Murder,” said Bolton. “Celia is one of those magical actors who creates a special world where we can all live with her for a few hours. Our intimate venue allows for a unique experience to see this stellar company close-up. If you couldn’t get tickets to see Celia’s Tony winning performance on Broadway as Scout in To Kill A Mockingbird, now is your chance to experience her extraordinary talent. Dial M is a must-see for this season.” For the close of the summer, White Heron will present Thurgood by George Stevens, Jr. This masterpiece tells the story of American icon Thurgood Marshall, continued on page 21

who successfully argued Brown vs. the Board of Education before the Supreme Court and later became that body’s first African-American justice. Audiences will find Thurgood’s success story to be a riveting celebration of all that is best about our country. Performances will run August 22 through September 1. “This tourde force will leave you breathless, moved and inspired by an incredible performance and the story of a great American,” said Bolton In addition to theatrical productions, White Heron has partnered with the Nantucket Comedy Festival to present “the White Heron Comedy Club,” a destination for great comedy on Friday and Saturday evenings at 9 p.m. throughout the summer. Gary Marino will open the Comedy Club season on July 1 & 2. On July 8 & 9, audiences will laugh along with Steve Sweeney; August 12 & 13 Jack Gallagher will be on stage. The program ends with Tom Cotter on August 26 and 27 and Don Gavin on September 2 and 3. Our weekend comedy club nights will be a treat,” said Kopko. “Collaborating with our friend Kevin Flynn and the Nantucket Comedy Festival, we’ll be bringing in some top comics. With our lobby bar, this will be a great evening, and Nantucket will at last have a destination for weekend comedy all summer long. For the winter holidays, White Heron will revive its popular production of A Nantucket Christmas Carol, adapted by Mark Shanahan from the Charles Dickens classic. This version of the fabled holiday story is set on Nantucket in 1840, making it both a holiday tradition and a celebration of the island’s local history. This will be the last opportunity to see A Nantucket Christmas Carol until 2024. In reflecting on the artists who have made White Heron a success over the last decade, Bolton said, “Our acting company is diverse and extensive—with more than 112 actors who have performed on the White Heron stage over the past 10 years. They run the gamut of Academy Award winners, Tony Award winners and nominees, journeyman actors, students and acclaimed actors from stage and television all working together as members of a company. We celebrate and thank those actors who have worked shoulder to shoulder to build our White Heron legacy.” Tickets for the White Heron’s season are now available for members: $100 memberships include early access to tickets, discounted tickets, and access to exclusive behind-the-scenes events. Additional benefits are offered to patrons who join the Heron Society. Ticket sales for the general public begin on April 29. For additional details, visit whiteherontheatre.org or call 508-825-5268.

Colbert, Jon Stewart, Trevor Noah, and even before Doonesbury, there was Art Buchwald,” writes Hill. His book, a mix of biography, correspondence, comic capers and poignant scenes, gives us insight into Buchwald’s “sense of good old American humor and decency.” Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18, are chock-full of back-to-back events featuring well-known authors, including Tiya Miles, Dave Barry, Alice Hoffman, Mitchell S. Jackson, Louise Penny, Ben Shattuck, Azar Nafisi, Mitch Albom, Imbolo Mbue, and more, along with Nantucket’s own Nat Philbrick, James Sulzer, Nancy Thayer, and Steve Sheppard. The Nantucket Book Festival’s Opening Celebration on Friday evening extols the bond of literature and community to which the Festival is dedicated. This year it features authors Qian Julie Wang, Mitchell Jackson, and Azar Nafisi, who will share how books connect us to each other. Also at the festival opening, the Nantucket Book Foundation will recognize island youth who show great promise as writers with the Young Writer Awards, a cornerstone of the Festival. After the Opening Celebration, the annual Author Dinner at the White Elephant will offer the chance to dine and chat with many of the festival authors. This is the only fundraising event of the festival, and tickets are now available. Another highlight of the weekend is a rare appearance by the Rock Bottom Remainders at 8pm on Saturday, June 18. This “garage band” of authors includes some of today’s shining literary lights. Between them, they’ve published more than 150 titles, sold more than 350 million books, and their words have been translated into more than 25 languages. But on this night, they’re rock stars. Four ringers help them out: drummer Josh Kelly, Erasmo Paolo on saxophone, Sam Barry on harmonica, and Janine Sabino on vocals. Hailed by critics as having “one of the world highest ratios of noise to talent,” the Remainders have no music videos, no record contract, no Grammy® nominations—but they do have more than 159,000 hits on Google. Buy your tickets now at NantucketBookFestival.org before they sell out, and use the posted schedule to create your festival itinerary.

Flowering Festivals are Blooming Early
Vol. 52 No. 1 • YesterdaysIsland.com

Page 35
California Poppy. Held the same weekend as our own Daffodil Festival (April 22 – 24 this year), the festivities includes food, music, vendors, live animals, and more. When nature “cooperates,” massive fields of orange poppies delight guests from page 7
800 years: about 2 weeks earlier! In the US, our cherry blossoms are also feeling the effects of earlier springtime temperatures. In 1912, Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gave the city of Washington, DC 3,000 cherry trees to symbolize the bond between the United States and Japan. The first National Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1927. Since then, thousands of people travel every year to see the trees in full bloom. The National Park Service, which has been tracking cherry blossom bloom time since 1927, uses these data to predict peak bloom period. This year, the predicted peak bloom for the cherry blossoms in DC was March 22-25. Since the festival began, peak bloom for the DC cherry blossoms has shifted earlier by an average of five days, but sometimes as much as 10 days earlier in any given year. In addition to the blossom forecast, organizers have scheduled the festival to go from March 20 – April 17, 2022 to ensure blossoms during that window. Another way DC has “hedged their bets”? More variety. The majority of the cherry blossom trees are of the Yoshino variety, the species predictions are based upon. But another
at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve just outside of town. Being a desert grassland plant, poppy blooms are dependent on winter precipitation; another factor becoming more variable with climate change. A live “poppy cam” of the primary poppy fields and regular bloom updates by park officials let visitors know what to expect. This year, bloom is already past peak: limited winter rainfall shortened the bloom period. The party scheduled for late April continues regardless. And what about daffodils? Another daffodil festival, this one in Thriplow Village in England, was started in 1969 in an effort to raise funds for the local church. It’s been so successful it has continued as a spring celebration which raises money for local charities. Similar to Nantucket’s festival, it’s held during a weekend in April originally selected during peak bloom of the daffodils. That first daffodil festival was held the last weekend of April, just like our own. Today, however, the Thriplow festival has been moved to coincide with actual peak bloom. In the
species, the Kwanzan, usually blooms two weeks after the Yoshino trees, giving visitors a second chance to catch the blossoms. Other flowering festivals from around the country were similarly started to celebrate spring and often local cultural heritage. Holland Michigan has a tulip festival which began in 1929 to celebrate the heritage of the town’s Dutch settlers. The festival is held in mid-May over two weeks to ensure that bloom time happens sometime during the festival. There’s even a Tulip Tracker report of how the blooms are progressing. The town webpage features a live feed of Centennial Park, which helps people keep an eye out for early bloomers. Other flower festivals celebrate lilacs (Rochester, NY and Arnold Arboretum, MA), roses (Portland, OR), azaleas (Wilmington, NC), and bluebonnets (Texas). Some organizers have moved festival dates to coincide with earlier bloom times. Others have extended the celebration to ensure that blooms happen during the festivities and adding other events to their schedules. In Lancaster California, the Poppy Festival celebrates the state flower; the decades since it started, the festival has slowly moved earlier and was held this year the weekend of March 19 and 20. So, how are our Nantucket daffodils faring? For the past decade or so, people have noted the blooms along Milestone Road often open well before Daffodil Festival. Many gardeners and daffodil enthusiasts have begun planting late-blooming varieties of daffodil bulbs to ensure blossoms come festival time. Research has shown that diversity often increases resiliency. The same can be true for our daffs: plant enough varieties and something will be bloom during the celebrations. As we continue to experience the effects of global climate change with springtime temperatures arriving earlier than historic norms, will the Nantucket Chamber move Daffodil Weekend earlier in April to maximize blooms? Will they further extend the festival to stretch two weekends in April to hedge their blossom-bets? Or will we find a new flower to worship that coincides with the end of April? Lilacs may be coming earlier as well. Or perhaps we will start celebrating native species! Nantucket Shadbush should be blooming soon and that is definitely a reason to celebrate.
