A Gift of Music The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital will be filled with the healing sounds of music thanks to a remarkable gift from Bruce and Marilou Sanford and their friends in memory of their late daughter, Ashley. The lobby of the new hospital now features a Steinway Spirio baby grand piano, known as the world’s finest high resolution self-playing piano. This gift from the Sanford family and their friends will be the foundation of the new Ashely Sanford Music Therapy Program at NCH, in partnership with the Nantucket Community Music Center, a tribute to Ashley’s love of music and Nantucket that will impact the lives of island patients.

ISLAND PAIRINGS

Wine Fest Highlights by Jenny Benzie, Advanced Sommelier of Épernay To make the most out of this hedonistic weekend that celebrates the island and all things in the world of wine, one must take a steadied approach in order to be successful. While jumping feet first for some endeavors is the best way to get started, spending the time to make a plan as to how to best navigate through all the events … You wouldn’t get in your car and just drive aimlessly around, so why would you not put some thought and effort into making the most of your wine fest weekend plans. Here are some highlights...

KICK-OFF PARTY

Stop by The Love Shack on Old South Wharf and check out all of our new LOLA designs!

You pack your bags not knowing what the Grey Lady weather will bring, then make your way to your crowded transport to get to Nantucket, hoping for no unforeseen delays, and arrive to an island that receives you with open arms, big smiles, and warm greetings. Nothing says, “Welcome to the Party” more than a having some sort of spritz in your glass. A perfect way to toast the occasion is with an internationally renowned Aperol Spritz in hand. Bright orange in color and hard not to miss, Aperol is a unique bittersweet liqueur that makes the perfect aperitif. It is made from a secret recipe that is an infusion of ingredients including oranges, herbs and roots, which oddly make for a perfectly balanced combination. Mix it with equal parts club soda and sparkling wine, and Voila! The festivities have begun. Enjoy the Kick-Off Party for the 2019 Nantucket Wine Festival with Aperol Spritz at CRU Restaurant on Thursday, May 16, from 10 pm. You can also enjoy specialty-crafted cocktails courtesy of Campari while listening to the beats of the island’s favorite DJ Ryan Brown. If you won’t be on island just yet to take advantage of this gig, or just can’t stay up that late anymore, you can stop by the official Aperol Spritz Headquarters for the weekend at Épercontinued on page 11

THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN! Enjoy scratch made cuisine & one of the largest craft draft beer selections on island.

In the rest of the northeast, spring means a gradual thaw and warm up. The ice melts, the puddles dry, and then, on one golden and dappled afternoon, the sun burns through and things go bloom. Not so out here. The sun appears like a student a half-hour late to his final exam: he offers no excuses or reasons, he just slips into an empty seat in the back and waits for his test to appear. In May, the weather people start to snigger and point out the inversion the Atlantic has made on our island lives. For most of the winter, we watch Worcester drop into the single digits with a chance of snow while we sit in drizzle and forty degree air, with a thirty-knot breeze off of the ocean. Now, in the bloom of spring, the hills of Worcester are garlanded with lilacs and roses with temps touching seventy, while our island home remains in drizzle at forty degrees with a thirty-knot breeze off the ocean. Which doesn’t mean that things aren’t blooming. In one of the houses that I take care of, an old friend is blooming under the window in the master bedroom. The water came in somehow, and now, in the transient warmth of the Shimmo spring, it spatters, circles the old paths, and blossoms into black splotches. As I stared at it, my mother’s kind and loving words rose in my ears: “Wake up and die right.” So I put the gloves on. I have fought this black mold since I have been taking care of the house. And I am sure everyone who has walked into this room with a bucket or a vacuum has found themselves in the same position: on their knees scrubbing a patch above the electric baseboard and below the window. I have tried many tricks on this, short of ripping the wall apart. At this point, I have devolved to the cheapest and oldest solution: bleach and time. I will scrub, I will recommend crowbars and then I will scrub again. Then I will run out of time, and

Make Your Yard a Paradise for Birds

ENJ NJOY T THE W E FESTIVA WINE F VA L IN STYLE!

Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation This May, as the seasonal stores and restaurants open up again, people will start to migrate back to our little island bringing a new energy from afar. The same holds true for many of our feathered friends. May can bring a slew of visiting migrants stopping by Nantucket for a bit of food and rest before heading farther north. Other birds are coming back for the breeding season getting ready to find a mate and build a nest. In order to attract such birds, people are filling a variety of feeders with sunflower seeds, suet, even orange slices. Hummingbird feeders are also being prepped with great hope. However, there are other ways to attract our avian visitors, like creating a wildlife habitat in your own yard. First, why would you want your yard to be a wildlife habitat? Birds add color, melodious tunes, and many eat insects (including mosquitos and other pests). Some birds, like hummingbirds, are also pollinators and so provide a benefit to your landscape. Many people put up bird feeders of all sizes and varieties. However, those require daily maintenance and filling, never mind the added cost of seeds on Nantucket! In creating a wildlife habitat, we start thinking of our plants and landscape as the food supply for the birds. If done correctly, there may be no need to fill the feeders. Whether you have a small slice of outdoor space or acreage to spare, anyone can create a wildlife habitat. How can you attract more birds to your yard, naturally? Start with paying attention to water, food, cover, reduce your use of chemicals and, last but not least, take a break from yardwork! Water is often the main limiting factor for birds in many yards. Even on Nantucket, a small amount of fresh water can make a huge difference to bird activity in a yard. The late Nantucket ornithologist Edith Andrews used to

The entire Nantucket community is invited to submit their artwork and cell phone photographs to be included in the May 24 Artists Open and Cellography exhibitions at the Artists Association Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. An opening reception will be held on Friday May 24, 6 to 8 pm in the downtown gallery. “The majority of our exhibitions exclusively showcase the work of our AAN members, however during this exhibition, we’re delighted to invite community members and non-AAN artists to participate in this special show, which is one of four open shows we’re offering this season, said AAN artist director Robert Frazier. For the ninth consecutive year, AAN is also pleased to invite cell phone photographers to submit images for the Cellography exhibition. “This popular show-within-a-show is displayed in the old school style of photos hanging from clothespins, as if drying in a darkroom, said gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the public to showcase their cell phone photos in a simplistic yet refined style. AAN member and island photographer D. Clyde Myers will once again curate the Cellography display. Artists who wish to participate in Cellography may bring up to five unframed photographs for sale. The photographs must be no larger than eight-by-ten inches in size and should not be framed. Participants in Artist Open may drop off one or two regular submissions for the exhibition, and/or five cellography works on Tuesday, May 21 at AAN’s 19 Washington St. gallery between 10 am and 5 pm. Art must be professionally presented, and pieces may be juried for space. The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is Michele La Maitre, who is an island photographer of note. Artists Open will be on display from Friday, May 24 through Monday, June 3 at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington St., a stone’s throw from Main Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. The gallery is open Monday – Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm.

music program spearheaded by Mollie Glazer, Artistic Director Emerita at the Nantucket Community Music Center. The Spirio piano features the latest Steinway technology allowing it to be played either by a pianist or from an iPad playlist. When the Natick-based piano merchant M. Steinart & Sons learned about the potential for the new music program, the company wanted to be part of the effort, and it donated to NCH a new digital Roland piano, which is smaller and mobile. This piano is now located in the second-floor conference area of the hospital where it will be readily available for use in patient rooms or the infusion bays. “We are so very grateful to the Sanford family and their friends for this wonderful and thoughtful gift that will help our new hospital become the healing space for patients that we have long envisioned,” said Dr. Margot Hartmann, President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Ashley Sanford, who passed away at the young age of 33 in March 2017, was a talented musician and writer who spent almost every summer of her life on Nantucket. Ashley studied piano with the legendary Hungarian teacher Gerta Klay, and sang in the chorale group at the National Cathedral School for Girls at her home in Washington D.C. Ashley loved Nantucket not only as a place where she could be with her family and pursue her interests in theater, tennis and horseback riding, but also for the compassionate care she received at Nantucket Cottage Hospital where she was a patient on several occasions as she suffered uncommon complications stemming from juvenile diabetes. It was a place she felt safe “because of the care of the hospital and her beloved Dr. Lepore,” her father Bruce Sanford said. “She was blessed with superb medical care from medical professionals all over the country—in Boston, Baltimore, the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics— but she felt no one understood her any better than the people in Nantucket,” Sanford said. “On a couple occasions she had to be airlifted to Brigham and Women’s for treatment. She would return to the care of NCH where she loved the nurses, pharmacists, all the staff.”

Paradise for Birds from page 7

hang an old plastic milk jug filled with water near her feeders. She poked a pin hole in the bottom (and at the top for air flow) and the water would just drip out slowly into a small collecting dish over the course of a day. This simple water feature was a huge boon for the birds. Moving or dripping water also dissuades mosquitos from using the water bath as a nesting area. If you don’t want to get too fancy with drips, a traditional bird bath can be a nice feature. Just remember to clean it regularly! You don’t want your water feature to be a source for an avian disease (or a mosquito nesting ground). As previously mentioned, you don’t have to put out bird seed to provide food. If you plant with wildlife in mind, select your landscape plants so that there are food plants available throughout the season. The birds will flock to your yard in addition to you having an extended growing season to enjoy. Early flowering plants are not only a welcome visual in the spring for us, they are one of the only sources of nectar and pollen for emerging insects and thus, food for our avian friends. Berry-producing shrubs are a must, but make sure to opt for native or at least non-invasive species like huckleberries, blueberries, arrowwood, cherries, etc. Ask at the local nursery or check out the Landscaping with Native Plants for Nantucket guide put out by the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (download at nantucketbiodiversity.org/ipsc). Native plants support a higher diversity of caterpillars and other insects. These insects are prime food for birds as well. Caterpillars that make it to cocoon or chrysalis stage then emerge as butterflies and moths for your garden delight. Other plants to consider are pollinator-attracting species like lavender, cardinal flower, and milkweeds. Sunflowers are not only good for pollinators, but the seeds can be a great food source in the fall for migratory birds bulking

up for the long journey. And by avoiding costly bird seed, you also avoid attracting other critters such as squirrels, mice, and rats! Providing at least two sources of cover allows birds a spot to hide and feel safe. Sometimes we just need to get away from it all, right? Providing cover can sometimes be construed as “messy,” but is important to create a space for wildlife. A brush pile, dense shrub or thicket, meadow planting, cluster of evergreens, or rock pile are all great options for cover. If we start by thinking of insects as part of the habitat and food for the birds, we start thinking of ways to increase native insect diversity. Almost all insecticides are non-target, meaning that they kill everything. By spraying for one insect (like a wasp), you can also end up killing honeybees, native bumblebees, butterflies, and a host of other invertebrates. A lack of insects tends not to attract birds and other wildlife. With a sterile yard, there are no pollinators and your garden plants can suffer. When possible, handweed to avoid chemicals. Don’t use insecticides unless very targeted (like a wasp nest) or specific (ant traps, for example). Finally, don’t clean up the yard...or at least don’t clean part of it. This is a great excuse to be lazy in your yard. Leaving leaf piles, sticks, and some other natural debris leaves refugia for insects and other invertebrates and shelter for some birds such as Carolina wrens. Debris piles also naturally decay, thus, adding to the organic matter of the soil. If your property borders a conservation area these ideas are especially important. Wondering how to get started? The Nature Conservancy and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology have lots of resources for how to turn your yard into a wildlife habitat. Formerly the Habitat Network, there are great articles on what to plant to attract certain bird species, how to rip up your lawn for pollinators, and how to encourage beneficial insects—you’ll this all at yardmap.org/learn. The National Wildlife Federation will even certify your yard as a wildlife habitat if you meet their requirements.

CAN DANCE

This weekend isn’t just about food and wine. It is also about blowing off some steam from a long week of work, getting the cobwebs out of your system this spring, and making way for summer fun. Dancing your socks off is a great way to express yourself and also burn off some calories from all the delicious meals and tasty beverages you have been consuming. Be sure to bring your dance shoes, whatever those may be, and valid ID over to The Chicken Box to get your wine fest groove on! Joshua Tree Band is the headliner this, and every, wine fest weekend. They perform as the nation’s premiere musical tribute to U2 music and this is a performance not to be missed. While the long-time band members do not look like the original members of U2 or pretend to impersonate them, they do uncannily reproduce the distinct sound of one of the world’s most popular rock bands. You will be awe-struck by their performance, along with the number of wine personalities that will also be in attendance. See you on continued on page 16

A LITTLE EXCITEMENT

FOR

SUNDAY FUNDAY

While on most weekends Sunday is seen as a day of rest, there is still so much to see and do on Nantucket during wine fest weekend that it would be a shame not to take advantage of the situation. Before heading to brunch at your favorite restaurant that has just opened for season, or making your way to the Sunday session of the Grand Tasting tent, wake up and watch four teams of culinary students go head-to-head as they compete for the title of “Junior Top Chef Champion” with the prize of a $10,000 Culinary Scholarship benefiting the Nantucket High School Culinary Arts Program. This is the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival, after all! Mentored by Sodexo Chefs, the teams will be given a mystery basket of ingredients and will have just one hour to prep, plate, and present their dishes to the celebrity chefs for judging. Judges for this year’s Junior Top Chef are Ed Brylczyk (Dole & Bailey, Inc.), Joseph Keller (Company of the Cauldron), Gerald Sombright (Tesoro) and John Tesar (Knife). Admission is a $10 suggested donation to the Nantucket Food Pantry. As you wrap up your weekend and put Nantucket Wine Fest on your calendar for next year already, please remember to drink in moderation, use a buddy system, and always have a designated driver. Hopefully you have made arrangements to head back home on Monday morning so that you can take in every last sip of life that Nantucket has to offer. In closing, if you ever feel you have had too much to drink or are battling addiction, please do not hesitate to seek help. Cheers!

someone else will pick up the sponge and continue on for the succeeding generations of black mold. Pro tip: use gloves. I have not initiated my young men into the fraternity of Mold. Even at this late date in the school year, they remain in the mysterious modern swamps of statistics and calculus before graduation breaks upon them. At this point, less than a month away from the “shake with the right, take with the left” moment, it remains an unspoken word. Graduation is something to think about after AP exams, and finals, and prom, and….there it is, with cap, gown, and special shoes. After that, there will be time for Generations of Mold. They will graduate without grandparents, which didn’t occur to me as significant until it suddenly did. Graduation from high school may not be the milestone it once was, but it is a milestone nonetheless. Like many other ceremonies, it matters a lot more to the people watching it than to the people participating. For the young men, fewer people will be watching than we once hoped. My grandfather gave me a watch; a hack watch from one of my uncles who had gone to war and had only partially returned. I knew its value then, he knew its value, and then time intervened and took it away. On the other hand, my father, in a typical sense of the moment and the impending future, gave me a brass stamp holder, letter opener, and pen cup. I still have those. I don’t remember what my mother gave me, if she gave me anything. It definitely wasn’t a sponge, bucket, and bleach set. Time leeches all of the valuable things away. The luggage, the silver, the crystal, and the furniture are all as likely to go to the dump as to the next generation. Instead, the kids steal everything valuable out of our purses and wallets while we aren’t looking. One of the young men has inherited my mother’s rage. He stares at you and lets the thunderclouds build behind him, until a wall breaks and Ireland, in storm and glory, bursts forth. The other young man looked at me standing in the kitchen and used another old phrase on me: “If you have time enough to lean, you have time enough to clean.” I see my parents in them. The ridiculous grace that my father had on the tennis court or the ski slope has skipped a generation and grown on them. My mother’s exhaustive and detailed student notebooks have come back and are re-written into a new century with a familiar hand. They flash me looks that I remember from my childhood. The young man crosses his arms and, there, Mary stands again, still angry about the missing ice cream. I am sure their mother sees the same echoes—they stay just in the side of your eye or just out of earshot. A phrase you remember, or a look, or a reaction: how did they get that? I have other things I would rather give them. There is china, still wrapped in green foam and zipped into protective cases. There are champagne flutes. And a frat sweater and books and an odd signed picture of Ted Kennedy. But they have looked past them and grabbed my mother’s love of ice cream and buttercream eggs. They snuck her expressions away and now they flaunt them in my face. Mother’s Day reminds me of all of the things that they have taken. And I am the only one they could have taken them from. I have the words that they have taken from my mouth. I have the expressions they have stolen from my face. I have the history that was taken untold and then expressed without a word. The thieves celebrate Mother’s Day; they celebrate everything that they have taken, while the things I want to give sit useless in my hands. Like bleach, buckets, and gloves.

Jay’s donuts the standard by which all others are judged!

with slices of red onion and a Thai peanut sauce that sneaks up on you with a light but lingering heat. Sophie T’s is our go-to place to order pizza on Nantucket. The classic crust is twirled to the perfect thickness and cooked BLT Chicken Wrap till bubbly and crisp around the edge. It’s strong enough to support toppings, yet remains pliable enough to fold the corner to keep the house-made sauce and fresh toppings in place. Several times a month we call in and take home a “Sophie’s Choice.” Our winter favorites are the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and the ACK Mac Pizza (complete with American cheese, beef, pickles, onions, and sesame seeds on the crust). During the warmer months we tend to order the Margherita or Prosciutto and Arugula Pizza. When family visits, we custom-design our second pizza from the extensive list of 32 toppings, and it almost always includes pineapple. We recommend the Pig Vicious Pizza, its thick layer of cheese studded with savory roasted garlic and sage along with an impressive amount of prosciutto, diced ham, crumbled sweet Italian sausage, and bacon. The aroma turned heads as this was brought to our table. Greek Pizza (cover photo) is another showstopper. One of Sophie T’s white pizzas with house-made pesto and blended cheese, this is made even more delicious topped with black olives, fresh tomato, red onion, spinach, and feta cheese. It seems like there’s a day’s worth of veggies on every slice! Shhhhh... don’t tell the kids. Pizza at Sophie T’s is also available by the slice—choices always include a cheese pizza, a pepperoni, one that features meat, and a veggie option.

The slices are huge (1/6th of an 18-inch pizza), and with the cost per slice from $4.50 to $5, you’ll have enough change to buy one of their freshly baked White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies... YUM! We made sure to save a little room for dessert during our visit last week (primarily by taking home half the meal). We thought about the Traditional Tiramisu and were tempted by the Mile Brownie Supreme High Cheesecake, but we decided on the Brownie Supreme. Do not try to finish this alone: on top of the big square of warm dark chocolate brownie is a thick layer of vanilla ice cream. Whipped cream covers it all, decorated with mint leaves and squiggles of chocolate sauce that puddle around the bottom of the dish. We were done in by this dessert! The final smile of the evening came with the check. We’ve spent more taking two people out to dinner on Nantucket than it cost for a feast for five, and we went home with enough leftovers for the next day’s lunch.
