Planning Window Boxes by Hilary Newell Hilary Newell came around the point 28 years agoand has been learning island-style gardening ever since. Window boxes are everywhere on Nantucket. The muted grey of weathered shingles lends itself to the addition of all sorts of colors to underline the windows. There’s no limit to the creative combinations that are planted each year by professionals and homeowners alike. But maybe you don’t know how to start the whole project. So here are some things to think about before getting started. Exposure. Take a look at the area where you want to hang your window box. Which wall of the house is it on? If it is on the South side, and there are no large trees shading that wall, you need to choose plants that are labeled for ‘Full Sun’ only. The sun on the south side is fierce, and plants that need some shade probably won’t make it. Conversely, boxes hanging on the North end of your house need to be planted with plants labeled for ‘Shade.’ East walls and West walls are able to accommodate plants with a broader tolerance for differing light levels. Know how much sun or shade your window box is going to get. Care. How much time will you have to care for your window boxes? Having beautiful flower boxes is not a ‘set it and forget it’ proposition. You have to expect to spend a little time each week caring for your plants, but you can mitigate this by choosing low care varieties. Supertunias and many other new cultivars of annuals are bred for thriving in low care situations. Water and fertilizer are needed, but pinching, dead-heading and trimming are not. Some daisy-type flowers do very well in full sun, but they require constant pruning and heavy feeding to continue blooming. If you don’t have the time to dedicate to that, stay away from Marguerite Daisies. If you don’t want to spend any time on maintaining window boxes, don’t plant them. Or hire someone to take care of them for you. But don’t plant plastic flowers. Please. The box. There are directions all over on-line on how to construct your own window boxes. If you have a handy person around your house that can do that sort of thing, lucky you. If you are like me, that other person around the house is way better at working in the garden and cooking than working with wood-shop tools, and frankly, I prefer that he keep all his limbs, so I would choose to purchase window boxes that are all ready for me to plant in. They come in all kinds of styles

with fancy internal watering systems, warrantees against rot, new technology, liners, no liners, and what not, but the most important thing that a window box has drainage. Or ‘weep holes’ as one site described them. Save your weeping for when the box falls off the house, just be sure the box has really good drainage holes. Most pre-made or custom-made boxes will have drainage holes, but if you acquire some without, you can drill holes easily, without danger to life and limb. I picked up a new trick last year when I saw someone planting a container where the drainage holes were too big and she placed a kitchen sponge over the hole to keep the soil from draining out of the hole. The drainage holes can be up to about a half inch is fine. Soil won’t wash out, but excess water will drain. Soil. And speaking of soil…that’s what it is. It’s soil, not dirt. Soil is a living environment complete with good bacteria and microorganisms that plants need to thrive. It contains decaying organic matter, micronutrients, beneficial fungus and other living organisms, minerals, air, and decaying bodies of tiny insects. Dirt is what lives in the bag of your vacuum cleaner. Because the plants in your window box are contained, and not connected to the earth, the soil they are planted in needs to be as alive as possible. Choose a potting mix that is labeled for containers and your plants will be happy. Fertilizer. The new Town of Nantucket fertilizer application regulations do not address container plantings, but we should all keep them in mind. Containers do need to be fertilized to keep blooming all summer, so avoid letting too much excess water run out of your pots when you do fertilize. Incorporate Plant Tone (or your favorite granular organic fertilizer) into your container soil at the time of planting, and start a liquid feed program of Neptune’s Harvest Seaweed and Fish emulsion in early July. Keep applying every two weeks, always following the package directions. Compatibility. You can’t go onto match.com to figure out whether your plants will be compatible with each other, but a little investigation will go a long way to ensuring the success of all the plants in your boxes. Check the tags for things like ‘keep moist’ and ‘let dry well between waterings.’ And be sure to pick plants with continued on page 19

Patterns in the Fog by Robert P. Barsanti One of the pleasures of attending a baseball game at Nantucket High School comes from watching the sea fog slowly creep down the harbor. From the sunny comforts of the first base stands, the runner takes his lead off first, the right fielder looks in for the signs, the carpenters walk the roof of the new Boy’s and Girl’s Club, and the towers of oceanic blue build up past Wauwinet. For the moment, while the sun is out and the wind is southerly, Spring has blown up from Maryland and Virginia. But let the day wear on, the wind shift, and Canada and Maine will shroud the diamond in wool and polar fleece. We play in the sunny breaks. Baseball takes to the island about as well as giraffes do. The schedule remains a work in progress through graduation in June. High winds cancel boats and boats cancel games. Or, the best of the Atlantic rolls in and hides home plate from the short stop. Games and practices come in those brief moments when the sun burns through and the white misty whisps blow over head like commuting witches. Unless one of our beloved summer plutocrats builds a dome, baseball will remain an outdoor game and subject to the predictable vagaries of an island spring. The clock and the calendar start back up in spring. Time absents itself in winter, particularly this winter with its cold, snow, and storms. Then, the sun starts to tick. The weekends and the deadlines begin to sound their alerts. This roof needs to be put on by the weekend, this house needs to be opened by next weekend, and someone has to help move the new merchandise into Vis-a-Vis for the summer. Year to year, the island awakens to the slow returning tide of money. First the realtors, then the landscapers, then the stores, then the restaurants...and then the lifeguards are on station, and we are standing in line for ice cream. Spring follows the same enviable pattern, year after year. We can sit in the same spot, in the first base stands, and see the past play out in the present. A few years ago Aaron Hull hit five home runs right there. It could happen again. Tomorrow will replay today. Over and continued on page 22

Alcohol quickly depletes the body of the B vitamins. Replace them with a B complex pill or a natural source such as hummus. The amino acids in the tahini don’t hurt either. The addition of beets boosts the health factor as well as assists the liver in breaking down toxins from alcohol. 1 small roasted beet 1 15 oz. can (1 3/4 cup) cooked chickpeas, mostly drained zest of one large lemon plus juice from half salt and pepper, to taste 2 large cloves garlic, minced 2 heaping T tahini 1/4 C extra virgin olive oil Place unpeeled beet in a shallow baking pan. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil and 1 C apple cider vinegar. Cover tightly and cook 1 hour in a 325 oven or until soft when pierced with a knife. (If you’re going to go through the process of roasting beets, might as well do a few. They keep well and can be sliced and served in salads, pickled, etc.) Once your beet is cooled and peeled, quarter it and place it in your food processor. Blend until only small bits remain. continued on page 16

If Only the Walls Could Talk by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Welcome Wine-oh’s and Wine-ette’s to the greatest wine show on Earth! The Nantucket Wine Festival will soon be in full-effect, and if this isn’t the reason you came to Nantucket for this special mid-May weekend, it will be for the rest of your life. What makes Nantucket Wine Festival amazing, memorable, and one of the most celebrated wine events in the entire wine world? It’s a combination of the location, the community, and unique opportunities offered by NWF. First of all, you have to make an effort to get here. You don’t just randomly end up on-island because you took a wrong turn and thought it might be nice to wonder around our cobblestone streets. Come rain, fog, wind, or sun-filled skies, your journey to Nantucket is just the start of your adventure. Island restaurateurs scramble to dust off winter residue, test new recipes from their off-season travels, plan wine events, and update staff in a pre-season dash to welcome the bevy of wine travelers who start to arrive May 13. NWF is an opportunity for our local chefs and owners to showcase their food and wine pairings, introduce this year’s signature dishes, and create the atmosphere of conviviality that is prevalent throughout the festive weekend. Small inns and rental homes that bravely weathered the storms of winter get a fresh coat of paint, new landscaping, and a spring-cleaning like no other. Concierges scramble to fulfill their guests’ pre-arrival requests. Local merchants are busy unpacking boxes, refreshing window displays, and preparing for the shoppers who visit between wine festival events. Last but not least, local bottle shops have dusted off their wares, restocked their shelves to feature wines from their favorite wine luminaries, and popped some corks in order to toast the success that the Nantucket Wine Festival brings to small businesses here on the island. Many wine connoisseurs who have attended the wine festival in years past have their NWF traditions: attend the Gala, go to one session of the Grand Tasting and perhaps one or two other events. As the festival has grown and expanded beyond these large group soirees, there are now more than 60 unique, well-devised, intimate events to choose (provided you got a ticket before they sold out). The title of NWF’s Great Wines in Grand Houses series could not be more apropos. Each year, Nantucket homeowners vie to have their homes selected to be included in this part of the wine festival. The owners chosen get to showcase their island home to a special group of guests. Plus they host a famous restaurant chef who prepares a scrumptious meal in their kitchen, and a winemaker from one of the most prestigious wineries in the world who shares the fruits of his labor. Worth the price of admission, you ask? Even with tickets costing up to $650 a person, indeed it is in order to be able to experience that special evening. While the basic concept of a stunning home, a star chef, and awardcontinued on page 12

As tourists and summer residents start streaming back to the island, Nantucketers are emerging from our hobbit holes to bask in the sunnier and warmer days like a pack of painted turtles. All this outdoor activity means it is time to be aware of and check for black legged ticks. Spring can be one of the most likely times for you to encounter a tick. Our warm bodies are easier to distinguish against the cooler air—hungry ticks are looking for a warm host, and we are out and about on the trails providing moving picnics. Early May used to be the bellwether month for warning people to watch out for ticks, but scientists now recommend that we start education in early April as warmer weather arrives earlier. When deer ticks are born they do not carry diseases, but the nymphal ticks that peak in May carry the majority of the disease, since they have had time to interact with various other hosts like rabbits and white footed mice that carry the bacteria (organisms) that transmit Lyme, babiesiosis and Anaplasmosis. Ixodes scapularis (often known locally as Ixodes dammini) are accurately called blacklegged ticks or more commonly known as deer ticks, and they take two years to complete their life cycle. They are approximately 3 mm in length. Females have a black head and dorsal shield and a dark red abdomen. Males are entirely black or dark brown. Both sexes have eight legs that are black. This black legged tick also has a characteristic anal opening, which appears within a horseshoe-shaped ridge on the lower edge of the abdomen, on the ventral side. Not that you are looking for that. Deer ticks, unlike other ticks, do not have festoons (ridges on the edge of the lower abdomen). Sounds festive, it’s not. In the larval state, black legged ticks have a dark head, with a translucent body. Like the adult, the nymph has four pairs of dark legs, but is smaller, measuring at about 1-2 mm in length. Their distribution across the Unites States is often linked to the distribucontinued on page 21

NANTUCKET HISTORY

Captain of Shipping by Amy Jenness author of On This Day in Nantucket History William Rotch, a prominent Nantucket shipowner and devout island Quaker died at age 94 on May 16, 1828. He was a businessman who owned a large 18th Century whaling and shipping business and helped make Nantucket the third-largest port in New England and the world’s whaling center. Rotch family ships were involved in 2 landmarks of the American Revolution. In 1773, Rotch-owned ships Dartmouth and Beaver—were two of the three raided during the Boston Tea Party. And, the ship Bedford was the first to display and carry the American flag into British waters on February 3, 1783. The American Revolutionary War created economic and political hardships for Rotch, who refused to fight or take a side because of his strong Quaker ideals. In fact, many of Nantucket’s citizens refused to participate in the war, which made them a target of both the British and the patriots. The British fleet ransacked ships, including Rotch’s, sailing from Nantucket, and harassed island sailors and citizens. In 1779, Rotch, and two others, testified before commanders of the British Army and Navy and asked the military to stop blockading the island’s shipping trade and the British agreed to stop the pillages. Nantucketer and patriot Thomas Jenkins charged Rotch and others with high treason for going to a British port without the consent of the court. During his testimony at a hearing, Rotch said he always removed bayonets from guns before selling them because a gun can be used to hunt for food but a bayonets’ only purpose is to kill a man. “As this instrument is purposely made and used for the destruction of mankind, and I cannot put into one man's hand to destroy another that which I cannot use myself in the same way, I refuse to comply with thy demand.' The person left me, much dissatisfied. Others came and received the same denial. It made a great noise in the country, and my life was threatened. I would gladly have beaten them into ‘pruning-hooks.’ As it was, I took an

winning winemaker remains the same year-after-year, it is the trifecta effect found in every aspect of this combination that makes these events unlikely to be replicated and so sought after by both hosts and guests. You will never have the same menu, with the exact same wines. The synergistic energy of the chef, the winemaker, and the host makes each of these exclusive wine dinners unique. Some of the highlights of attending a boutique experience such as this will definitely make you fall in love with Nantucket all over again. Each year, the ante of the events becomes even more prestigious, as each homeowner tries to out do the others. Did someone say “after-party with a rock band in the garage”? Is the dinner outside on the veranda, with sweeping views of the ocean from an island home so private that you will never see this scene again? What older vintage wines can be pulled from the cellar to share with these other wine aficionados? You may be asked to sit next to the winemaker (who insists your French is perfect and invites you for a private tour and tasting at his château) or next to the chef (who gives you a hands-on personal cooking lesson while preparing the meal and asks for your email so she can share the recipes with you), hosting or attending one of these events is an opportunity not to be missed. As quickly as the weekend arrives, it soon flows away likes the tides. The last bottle of wine has been opened, poured into your glass, and consumed and your time well spent on Nantucket becomes a treasured memory. Whether you are a first-time Wine Luminary or seasoned repeat wine consumer, you will always have your memory of the weekend to share. Never fear, my friend, the end of the Wine Festival and your departure from the Nantucket is just the beginning to the sequel that leaves everyone anticipating next year.

Improved Pre-Movie Experience Dreamland patrons will soon be zipping through ticketing and concessions in record time. The Nantucket Dreamland Foundation received an donation to upgrade the current layout to create a more efficient system. When the work is complete, ticketing will be available at both the sidewalk window and inside at concessions, which will have three stations. The new concessions area features drink fountains between registers, a much larger popcorn machine, and two raised display cases featuring candy and other treats. The combination of highly visible drink and snack selections with the digital screens on the back wall will allow patrons standing in line to decide on what to order before they reach the register. During construction, the staff will set up terminals and concessions stand on the opposite side of the lobby. A limited selection of candy and packaged goods will be available, as well as canned sodas and bottled waters. There is no anticipated interruption of scheduled programs. "The existing layout was designed for smaller volume of patrons than we currently service year-round. With this donation we were able to focus on important upgrades to our theater operations while working within the structure we already have in place. The goal is to move our patrons through their purchase and on to the entertainment as efficiently as possible, and make the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone," commented Melissa Murphy, the Dreamland's executive director. Construction begins on May 11 and should be finished by early June.

The asparagus here adds a powerful wallop of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, high in vitamin K and folate as well as a wide variety of antioxidant nutrients, including vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and the minerals zinc, manganese and selenium. 6 large eggs 2 tablespoons whipping cream 1 garlic clove, microplaned 1 t salt, plus a pinch 1/4 t freshly ground black pepper 1 T olive oil 1 T butter 12 ounces asparagus, trimmed, cut into 1/4 to 1/2-inch pieces 1 medium roasted red pepper, seeded, diced 3 ounces Fontina cheese, diced

Preheat the broiler. Whisk the eggs, cream, garlic, 1 t salt, and pepper in a medium bowl to blend. Set aside. Heat the oil and butter in a 9 1/2-inch-diameter nonstick ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add the asparagus and saute until crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Raise the heat to medium-high. Add the red peppers and a pinch of salt and saute 2 minutes longer. Pour the egg mixture over the asparagus mixture and cook for a few minutes until the eggs start to set. Sprinkle with cheese. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the frittata is almost set but the top is still runny, about 2 minutes. Place the skillet under the broiler. Broil until the top is set and golden brown on top, about 5 minutes. Let the frittata stand 2 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, loosen the frittata from skillet and slide the frittata onto a plate. Let cool and slice into wedges. Eat, drink, sleep, repeat!

the light requirements that will meet the light level at your home. Geraniums need a lot more light than ferns or Lobelia, so if you plant them together, chances are that only one will thrive – the one whose care tag matches the light level where they are planted. Plants that need to dry out like Portulaca will not perform well when planted with something that requires a lot of water. One will drown or the other will wilt.

Color. Do you like wild colors? Or are you more of a pastel devotee? There’s a wide array of color choices at the garden centers, so think about this before you begin shopping, and by all means, don’t walk up to the garden center employee and say “What colors do I like?” You can get away with planting colors together outdoors that you would never choose to have in your house. Bright orange and purple seems to be a trendy combination these last few years. Choosing colors from opposite sides of the color wheel (complimentary colors) will pack a visual punch. Using colors that are analogous on the color wheel (colors that are close to each other, like purple, lavender and pink, or yellow, yelloworange and orange) will create a harmonious look for your window box. Get ideas by looking at boxes that are already planted. Remember that color can come

vol. 45 no. 2 • our 45th season! from foliage, too. Plant’s leaves come in a lot of colors and all kinds of variegation. Houseplants, sometimes labeled as ‘tropical foliage’ can be combined in a shady window box that will look great for the whole season. There are so many different textures to those tropicals, the boxes can be intriguing to look at. Bloom time. Many annuals bloom all summer, and that makes them a perfect choice for window boxes. Supertunias are one of the stars of the summer window box. They’re available in a wide variety of colors and sizes, they will bloom all summer, and they don’t need deadheading. Some varieties are trailing, and some are mounding, so read the labels carefully before you plant. When you plant supertunias in the ground, this is less important, as they will all mound up then trail across the ground, but in a container, you will want more consistency in habit. Plant size and height. When choosing a plant, be sure to read the tag to determine the final height. The picture on the cute little sunflower doesn’t indicate that the plant will reach five feet tall before it blooms, but the fine print on the label does. It’s ok to choose tallish plants and mix them with smaller plants. In fact, that’s what keeps the boxes interesting. Plants up to a foot tall, like Sonata Cosmos or geraniums, mix beautifully with shorter plants like Calibrachoa. Adding a trailing element to the front of the window box creates a dramatic effect as the plants grow through the summer. You don’t have to try something new every year. But if you find a combination that works, go with it again, or try varying it slightly. Use different colors, or a different number of each type of plant. It always helps to keep notes, too. You can staple plant tags right into a small notebook where you can keep track of the variety and number of plants you use each year. It’s a great tool for looking back and planning ahead.

early opportunity of throwing them into the sea. I sank them in the bottom of the sea…I did it from principle. I have ever been glad that I had done it. If I have done wrong, I am to be pitied.' Complaints against Rotch were partially discharged and his full liberty was restored after the war. The conflicts and harassment from both sides prevented Rotch and other Nantucket ship owners from whaling or provisioning the island, and by the end of the war, Nantucket had lost the majority of its ships and island people were close to starvation. In his memoir, Rotch remembered it this way: “From the year 1775 to the end of the war we were in continual embarrassments. Our vessels were captured by the English, and our small vessels and boats sent to the continent for provisions denied and sent back empty under pretense that we supplied the British, which was without the least foundation. Prohibitory laws were often made in consequence of these reports, unfounded as they were. By this inhuman conduct we were sometimes in danger of being starved.” After the American Revolution, some ship owners began to rebuild their whaling businesses on Nantucket and others relocated to Nova Scotia, England, and France, due in large part to British and French government incentives designed to put those countries in the lucrative whaling trade. In 1785, Rotch and his son Benjamin traveled to England to petition for permission to relocate the family’s whaling interests to England. When unreasonable demands were made, Rotch, already ambivalent about moving to England, turned instead to France. With a warm welcome from that country, the Rotch family conducted whaling from Dunkirk beginning in 1786. While in France, Rotch did well and associated with influential people, but once again his Quaker faith and his pacifist stand against war got in the way of business. In 1791, when a revolution in France seemed imminent, Rotch asked the National Assembly at Paris to be exempted from fighting. He tried one more time in 1793 without success. Once again he and his sons moved the family whaling business, this time to Milford Haven, England, a town developed by the British to be a whaling port. Rotch eventually retired to New Bedford, where he died, and left his sons to run the family whaling ventures in England and America.

tion of its primary reproductive host, the white-tailed deer, although there are dry areas of the country with plenty of deer and no deer ticks. Here on Nantucket we find them in our sandplain grasslands, old agricultural fields, heaths and moors, scrub oak forests, and (rarely) in the salt marshes. Ixodes scapularis is parasitic throughout its life on the white-footed mouse, small mammals, and birds, and the white-tailed deer. In addition to being a parasite, I. scapularis is also a vector of Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterial species of the spirochete class of the genus Borrelia. This tick (Both nymph and adult stages) is also known to be a vector of human babesiosis, Babesia microti, and human granulolytic erlichosis. Good times. But don’t panic, you can take precautions and still enjoy the outdoors. Adult males and females are active October-May, as long as the daytime temperature remains above freezing. Preferring larger hosts, such as deer, adult blacklegged ticks can be found questing about knee-high on the tips of branches of low growing shrubs or high grasses. Adult females readily attack humans and pets. When they are fat and happy adults, they are much easier to spot and more likely to be noticed and removed before they have attached and transferred any pathogens they may carry. Once females fully engorge on their blood meal, they drop off the host into the leaf litter, where they can over-winter. Engorged females lay a single egg mass (up to 1500-2000 eggs with 810 being the average number) in mid- to late May, and then die. Larvae emerge from eggs later in the summer. Blacklegged ticks are easily distinguished from other ticks by the orange-red body surrounding the black scutum. Scutum, although it sounds rude, is the Latin word for shield. In our use here it refers to the shield-like part of the tick’s body right behind the head. Males usually do not feed—they don’t need to beef up to feed babies, which is very different from their human counterparts. They also die after mating. Altogether this does not sound like an ideal life, although they do continue mating long after actually transmitting sperm, which may be that whole “anticipating dying part” if they believe other tick rumors. Nymphs are active May-August, and are most commonly found in moist continued on page 29

Patterns in the Fog from page 5

over and over again. While the patterns seem to repeat across the rest of the island, in high school, the pattern ends abruptly in the spring. For the sudden sunny days of spring bring new and unsettling discoveries. The word “never” sprouts everywhere like daffodils. One day, those young men take the field and catch their very last pop fly. They run in to the benches, shake hands, change in the locker room, and never play baseball again. A college has sent a very large folder with an even larger bill. Just as they begin to settle into that reality, the Advanced Placement exams start, followed by finals, then Senior Week, prom, yearbook, and finally graduation. Then they never go back. Every year, in almost every young senior's mirror, the fog builds at the edges. Make it stop. One more time. Two years ago, a young man attended many of my classes, although I am not sure if I taught him much. He skipped most classes, played “Flappy Bird” on his phone, and completed enough assignments so that he came to the end of his year with a 62 and the prospect of a warm handshake on the stage. The smoke and fog around him cleared for one moment, and he saw the long line of “never agains” that were passing him by. Those friends that rode in his car out to “lunch” were now headed off island to colleges and jobs. He saw the rude exit we had planned for him, and he did the only logical thing he could think of. Nothing. He took his final with his head on the desk and his pen in his pocket When we forced him to retake the exam, with his mother beside him, we made him submit enough so that we could shove him out the door with his diploma. I think he still might be outside in the fog, waiting to get back in. Fortunately, most of the graduates get past that fog of panic and let the “never agains” pass with Pomp and Circumstance. The AP exams begin this week; exams that may give them college credit or at least credibility. One of my colleagues has put a poster of the Tank Man of Tianneman Square up on his door. “This guy,” she says to the students. “is you. When you leave here, your job is to stand in front of the tank. The world is full of stupid people and your job is to leave the sidewalk, step in front of the tank, and prevent the stupid from happening.” Thankfully, her students absorb that lesson. They leave us in the spring and look for tanks. And we have no shortage of tanks. Even on Nantucket, history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. We lose ourselves in the couplets. One spring repeats another, Daffodils followed by Wine followed by Figawi. The weekends fill with vacationers, our phones buzz with requests, and the paper lists more and more “Help Wanteds" and fewer and fewer “Rooms for Rent.” The fog rolls in, again and again. Every years seems to repeat the previous. In the warm truth, we graduate every spring to a whole new island that only echoes the one we put away in the fall. This one has new curb cuts so that the tractor trailers can get out of town easier. This one will have a bigger grocery store, a bigger hospital, a bigger school, and a third electric cable. In the bright sunlight, we can step up to the plate, set our eye on the pitcher, and take our cuts.

leaf litter in wooded areas, or at the edge of wooded areas. The eight-legged, pin-head sized nymph typically attaches to smaller mammals such as mice and voles, requiring 3-4 days to fully engorge. Nymphs also readily attach to and blood feed on humans, cats, and dogs. Once fed, they drop off into rodent burrows or leaf litter in animal bedding areas where they molt and emerge as adults in the fall. The sneaky nymphs are the ones you have to be on the lookout for right now. They are tiny! The best defense is to check yourself thoroughly when you return from a dog walk or hike and to wear light colored clothing. Bug sprays containing DEET will work, too, but have many serious side effects both to us and the environment. I wear a variety of organic natural sprays. I am field testing Aromaflage right now and also like Ecosmart. Stop by the Field Station to test drive various organic sprays. The six-legged larvae are active July-September and can be found in moist leaf litter. Larvae hatch nearly pathogen-free from eggs and remain in the leaf litter where they will attach to nearly any size mammal and many species of birds, though they prefer white-footed mice. Larvae remain attached to their host until replete (full), usually 3 days. Once fully engorged, the larvae drop off of the host and molt, re-emerging the following spring as nymphs (and with two extra legs—quite a trick). Dr. Richard S. Ostfeld, a disease ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, has been coming to Nantucket with many other tick borne disease experts to evaluate how climate change may be effecting the incidences of tick borne diseases. According to them, if we want to get a leg up on tickborne illness, we need to become vigilant earlier in the season. Among findings published in a recent paper: “nymphal ticks peak in the spring, larval ticks peak in the summer, and both emerge nearly 3 weeks earlier in warmer years.” As a result, Ostfeld is advocating moving Lyme Disease Awareness month to April. "By encouraging safe behavior, public education campaigns play a real role in reducing the number of people that suffer from Lyme disease and other debilitating tick-borne illnesses... we need to begin taking preventative measures before May, as potentially infected nymphal

ticks are already on the move...” Even without a host, deer ticks are able to survive for roughly 3 months. This is particularly evident during the winter. As the cold weather begins to take hold, deer ticks who have not found a host will take refuge in areas that are high in vegetation. They remain inactive until late February or early March, when they will die if they fail to find a host. A cold winter can drastically reduce the tick population as a deer tick can only survive if the average winter air temperature is 19 degrees or warmer. This last winter, although snowy, storm ridden, and long, was not as cold as it felt. If it is super cold and very dry and icy, ticks might be killed off by weather, but according to Dr. Ostfeld, deep snow serves an insulating effect that can be protective for ticks. And snow is an indicator of warming temperatures that can support moisture, versus true arctic cold which is drier. People on Nantucket and our local physicians and hospital employees are very well informed about Lyme disease and other tick borne diseases. But if you live in NY, CT, MA, RI, you can encounter a deer tick—they just get more press here. They are found throughout most of the US, although they are most commonly east of Texas. You may not know it, but for more than 30 years the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station has hosted the prominent tick borne disease expert, epidemiologist, and Professor in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health at Tufts University, Dr. Sam Telford III, who has been researching tick-borne disease and its effect on humans and animals on Nantucket since 1984. Dr. Telford has some good advice regarding simple precautions to take to lower your risk of catching a tick borne disease. One of the best ways to easily see and remove ticks is to wear light clothing, long sleeves and pants. Use bug repellent if you know you’ll be in tick habitat, primarily spraying just your legs and ankles. After you come inside, do a total body tick check. When you want to be really cautious, tuck your pant legs into long socks. If there's anything unusual, see a doctor. If you have an inexplicable fever in the summer, bring that to the attention of a doctor. From a previous interview with Dr. Telford: “I've been working with these diseases for years, and I'm disease-free. I might get a few bites a year, but the ticks never stay on for longer than a few hours, and that's not enough time for them to do damage. Ticks need to feed at least 24 hours before they can transmit the pathogens that cause Lyme disease, babesiosis, or ehrlichiosis.”

Featured Restaurant: Brant Point Grill An Ideal Spot Tucked Away in Plain Sight

Proscuitto and Mount Alice Cheese

Brant Point Grill tends to be thought of as the island spot for special occasions, both large and small: Mother’s Day brunch, graduations, anniversaries, special birthdays, wedding receptions, and, of course, this month it is the major venue for the Nantucket Wine Festival. We love this place for the in-between times as well. Tucked away in plain sight, it’s the ideal spot to start your day at 8am, watching the harbor come awake while sipping coffee and nibbling on pastries or tucking into a Breakfast Burrito, Vanilla Bean Challah French Toast, Pastrami Hash. If you attempt their Billionaire Benedict, bring a friend to break your fast with this feast. It’s the ideal spot for your mid-day meal on the patio overlooking the beach and the sun-dappled water...dig into a thick and juicy BPG Burger with guac and spicy mayo, Brie & Smoked Onion Jam Sandwich, or go all out New England with Chowda, Lobster Salad, Fried Clams, or Steamed Mussels. Come summer, you can relax on the lawn in the afternoon and sip champagne while you savor freshly shucked oysters and clams. It’s the ideal spot for an after-beach, after-museum, after-shopping drink and snack—Shrimp Cocktail, Beef Sliders, Fish Tacos, Lobster Mac & Cheese. And, all this month and next (May and June), food on the bar menu is half price. When the sun sets, the BPG bar picks up, with live music, craft cocktails, micro brews, a super selection of whiskey, scotch, and bourbon, and a fun and lively ambiance. This week, we were reminded that Brant Point Grill is the ideal spot for a dinner with friends. Chef Thomas William Pearson, who lived and cooked in France, the UK, and South Carolina before landing on Nantucket, is back for his second season as executive chef. His spring dinner menu emphasizes fresh, clean preparations, with

Cured Wild Salmon

a few nods to the cool evenings that linger through May in the form of superb braised dishes that will be replaced by light summer dishes when warmer evenings embrace Nantucket. Wait staff here is relaxed and well-suited to leisurely dining. Among our fellow diners, there was a young couple by the windows overlooking the harbor enjoying date night, a group of six women having fun on a “Girls’ Night Out,” a large multi-generational family who told us they were on their first visit to Nantucket “since whenever,” and an older couple toasting their anniversary. Staff gracefully handled the variety of guests. With just a half-dozen appetizers, Chef Pearson covers a wide range of tastes. His New England Clam Chowder is deservedly famous for its fresh clams and rich flavor, and the Island Creek Oysters are exactly what you want when you order oysters: fresh and briny with buttery notes and a sweet finish, served with a migonette that adds just a touch of bright flavor. (Suggested pairing: Prager, “Hinter der Berg,” Grüner Veltliner, Wachau, Austria) If you’ve come to BPG for the Steakhouse Experience, then you’ll want to begin with their Steak Tartar. The beef is served in small dice anointed with olive oil and whispers of dijon, worcestershire, and tabasco. The flavors blossom as you enjoy this rare treat, and the raw quail egg yolk nested on top adds the classic French finish. (Suggested pairing: Allagash Saison beer) Or you might want to order the Nantucket Crab Cake as your prelude to a

Steak Tartar

steak dinner. The thick, warm crab cake is browned top and bottom and served on a chilled relish of roasted corn and red pepper, with a smear of lemon aioli. Crab is king in this appetizer—the cake is lightly bound and the pure, delicate flavor shines. (Suggested pairing: Schramsberg, Blanc de Blanc, Brut, Napa Valley) The Crab Cake and the Chowder are also served for lunch and at the bar, but you must come in for dinner if you want our two favorite spring appetizers: The Cured Wild Salmon and the Proscuitto and Mount Alice Cheese. Deep pink and deeply flavorful, the salmon is served in narrow slices, cut thick enough to savor the richness. Small spoonfuls of salmon caviar add salty pops and little piles of bown butter crumbs suggest sand but taste deliciously nutty. Tips of tender asparagus are served alongside on spring green herb mayonnaise. (Suggested pairing: Avancia, Godello, Galicia, Spain) The proscuitto and cheese plate is a beautiful composition of flavors and textures: ribbons of proscuitto with honeycomb, toasted hazlenuts, and vanillascented apple tucked in the folds. The cheese is a creamy counterpoint, superb

with the ham. We’d love to try this with the slightly cheese warm. (Suggested Nino pairing: Negri, “Ca Brione” (Field Blend), Valtellino Sondrio, Italy) Entrees on the dinner menu include a la carte steakhouse-style choices with sides and sauces to pair Slow Braised Short Ribs with each and several composed main dishes. New for spring and only offered during May and June, is a 3 for $33 Menu with 3 appetizer choices—satiny, truffle embued Cauliflower Soup, Arugula Salad with beets, and a belly warming Short Rib Ragout— and 3 entrees—Skirt Steak, Seafood Bouillabaisse, and Roasted Chicken Breast. Desserts are selected from the menu. Steaks are thick and glorious at BPG. The 12-ounce New York Strip, naturally raised at Pineland Farms, arrived at our table naked save for a pat of herb butter melting into the deliciously caramelized grill marks and over the charred edges. One cut revealed it was cooked perfectly to the medium rare we ordered. We each savored a bite before we started dipping into the housemade sauces, our favorites the Red Wine Jus and the Chimichurri. Chef Pearson has lightened the sides offered this season, adding a delightfully fresh Asparagus and Radish Salad and removing some of the fried options. Best with the steak are the Mushrooms in Garlic Butter and the Loaded Whipped Potatoes (think stuff-baked minus the skin plus bacon, cheddar, parmesan, and sour cream). BPG’s signature Lobster Mac & Cheese, crusty on top, creamy in the middle, and full of big chunks of lobster, is filling enough to be an entree. (Suggested pairing: Faust,

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa) Hurry over for the Slow Braised Short Ribs—we suspect this will be one of the first dishes to be changed for summer, and you don’t want to miss it! This splendid entree makes us wish the cool weather would linger. The meltingly tender beef is snuggled into a creamy parmesan polenta surrounded by English peas, roasted pearl onions, and bone marrow carrots. A spoonful of gremolata adds bright, fresh spring flavor to this cold weather classic. (Suggested pairing: Finca Vi l l a c r e s s e s , Te m p r a n i l l o , Ribera del Duero, Spain) We very much enjoyed the Seared Sea Scallops, beautifully seared to bring out their sweet flavor and showcased with morels, baby turnips, kale, and 12-ounce New York Strip quinoa. (Suggested pairing: Illumination, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley) But we adored one of the chef’s own favorites: the Roasted Halibut Filet. The halibut is perfectly seasoned and seared, and it’s ringed with cool herb yogurt sauce. A colorful assortment of tender red, gold, and chioggia beets and crisp sea beans add sweetness and salt. (Suggested pairing: Vincent Sauvestre, Meursault, Burgundy, France) Desserts by Marcia Bruce never disappoint. If you love chocolate, you can’t go wrong with her 7 Layer Chocolate Cake (yes, seven!). For a light finish, it’s the Lemon Mousse you want. The Cranberry Bread Pudding, served warm, with tracings of caramel and scoop of vanilla ice cream, is an island favorite (ours, too!), but the Vermont Goat Cheese Cake with candied walnuts, brandy snap, and a perfect balance of sweetness and tang took highest honors. by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island

Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.
