Retreat for Artistic Collaboration

by Rebecca Nimerfroh Just four miles from the turn onto Polpis from Milestone, you will see an unassuming sign reading Almanack Pond Road. It is down this sandy lane, lined with scrawny, wind-swept trees that you will stumble upon the Almanack Arts Colony, a palatial retreat founded by John S. Johnson and sister India Blake that hosts screenwriters, songwriters, and artists from various different backgrounds and mediums in the pursuit of one precious thing: to escape the noise of the world, be inspired by the beauty of this island, and make amazing art.

One look at the property at 25 Almanack Pond Road and you would think you had stumbled upon a farmhouse in some landlocked state of America. The estate, with its now empty green paddocks, was a vacation home for the Johnson family for more than two decades and boasts an expansive horse barn (still with a dozen stalls), two converted guest cottages and a main house with five bedrooms. At the foot of a hill by the home there is a pond, likely stocked with fish, and an overgrown apple tree with limbs begging for climbing. Needless to say, this land looks every bit like the paradise that it serves to be for the creative types invited here.

Not open to the public, and with “colony” programs spanning from one week to one month for the Screenwriters Colony and the Songwriters Colony, under the Almanack Arts Colony umbrella, this “artist-in-residence” opportunity is obtained by referral only, not by application. Notable alumni include screenwriters David Robert Mitchell of It Follows and Megan Holley of Sunshine Cleaning. These programs are so successful, in fact, that the Screenwriters Colony is now in its thirteenth year, and the newly established Songwriters Colony is in its second.

But don’t dismay if you’ve not yet been referred, because if you are lucky enough to be on Nantucket this August, you can spend a full day enjoying the otherwise private grounds. On August 6, the Almanack Arts Colony will host their annual fundraiser, the “BBQ, Bocce, and Bluegrass” tournament, with tickets on continued on page 18

“A Dot that Went for a Walk” Opens at AAN The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is pleased to announce the opening of a double exhibition: A Dot That Went for a Walk and Make an Impression, with a reception on Friday, May 12, 6–8 p.m. in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street.

“A Dot That Went for a Walk will be on the first floor and is an members-only show,” curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier. “It will focus on drawings and monochromatic works in a dominant color, including some black and white art. The exhibition title comes from a poem by Paul Klee: ‘A line is a dot that went for a walk.’ ” “The second show is Make an Impression and will Joan Albaugh display all forms of printmaking by member and non-member Nantucket artists,” said Frazier.

AAN offers several opportunities each season for non-members to participate in gallery exhibitions. “Open Shows are a great way for friends, students, and people who take classes at the Visual Arts Center to get involved in our gallery programs,” said executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “It’s also a great way for us to meet new artists and potential new members and encourage them to join.”

2-HOUR GUIDED WILDERNESS HIKES

by Robert P. Barsanti I think of my mother almost every day. She died on a snowy night in February, at the tail end of a long, painful, and humiliating retreat from cancer.

My father called me in the middle of that night when I was living on Lyon Street, at a time in my life when there were no rings, no children, and a Jeep still parked in the driveway. Although Death had been waiting for her outside in a Thunderbird, it still stunned us to realize that she had left. Twenty three years later, I sleep on a different street, in a house, with a woman she hardly knew, with children she never met, on an island that has changed and, in many ways, hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. She remains with me. Time has given me the gift of sight; I can see her shadow in the leaves and outside the door.

Mary lived a life of black humor and dark, graceful necessity. My father, like most men, walked through the day in improvised self-delusion with a Megabucks ticket in his pocket and hope in his heart. Every packet of mail held a check, every phone call came from a new client, every trip for coffee became a business meeting. My mother had had all capacity for self-delusion scrubbed out of her early in a lace curtain Irish girlhood. Periodically, Mary had to clean my fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hopeful stains from her.

This complicated my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time on this island, as if Nantucket was something that she dare not hope for. My father was the Club Car and an American Express card, my mother was the Atlantic Cafe and cash. Mary went camping, took buses, and hid clothes in Fileneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basement until she got $35 off. A $20 hamburger riled her stomach and revolted her soul. At the same time, she loved the rolling of the ocean and the destruction of the waves. She cheered nothing on with the gusto of watching a beach house fall into the surf. When the No-Name storm took out a street in Codfish Park, I had to send her the VHS tape.

Eventually, she settled into a wary acceptance of the island. As long as she could get her onion rings and Downyflake donuts, things would be all right. She enjoyed the off-season in particular, since the cars were fewer and continued on page 12

Springtime on Nantucket brings blossoms of every color, resident birds back to the island, and a plethora of new visitors. Among all of these spring occurrences is one often met with derision: the Eastern Tent Caterpillar (ETC).

Not just for the hobby entomologists and naturalists, these communal caterpillars are noticed by everyone as they cover the native cherry and beach plums trees and shrubs around the island. While they actually hatch from their egg masses in early May, they are most visible later in the season (early June) when their tents have reached a size that can easily be seen while driving 30 mph down Madaket Rd. While not everyone enjoys the presence of these insects, there are many wonderful things about the ETC that are often overlooked when homeowners are researching ways to obliterate them from their shrubbery. Below are just a few of my favorite things about Eastern Tent Caterpillars.

They’re amazing engineers. These caterpillars are such great tent builders it is part of their name! The tents are built by a group with individuals working together. Caterpillars that have hatched from different egg masses, but are in close proximity come together on one part of a tree (on Nantucket generally a Black Cherry or Beach Plum). Every day these little silk-spinning critters add layer after layer to their tent. This tent withstands Nantucket winds, rain, and sometimes a late spring sleet or snow. How do you think your tent would hold up to a Nantucket spring?

They’re communal living specialists. While they might not be little hippies, the ETC are kings (or queens) of commune living. They may hatch from different egg masses and not even be related, but ETC will shack up with the closest group of other ETCs. Even before they build their tent together, the tiny, black hatchlings congregate on a sunny side of a branch for warmth absorbing the sun’s rays. Like all communes, however, the tent meets its end when everyone grows up. Towards the end of June, the ETC drop from the trees to pupate on the ground before becoming adult moths. What’s left of the tent is full of frass (aka caterpillar poop).

It will soon whither in the summer sun. A true engineering marvel; tough and strong when needed yet biodegradable when no longer “in fashion.” We could learn a thing or two from our ETC friends.

They’re the original Hansel & Gretel. When the caterpillars leave the tent every day to feed, they sometimes have to travel around the tree to find tender, fresh leaves. If they’re on a big tree, they may have to explore several branches before they find a meal. Don’t worry, ETCs have already figured out how to be the most efficient. As they leave the tent, they leave a silken thread. Just like a bread crumb trail, other caterpillars will follow it to food. If there are no leaves in that direction, the caterpillar bites the thread, so the others know not to follow it.

We have found many caterpillar “super highways” which are layer upon layer of silk. Follow that trail, and it will lead you to a tender leaf buffet.

They’re food for birds. An old wives tale persists that ETC are only edible to Cuckoos and poisonous to other birds. While not as palatable as other species, research from the University of Michigan shows that ETC are eaten by over 60 species of birds, many of which call Nantucket home (including orioles, jays, chickadees and nuthatches). When the ETC’s are having a boom year (generally three years out of every ten), there is a veritable buffet available for many bird species. It’s been noted by some local bird enthusiasts that their feeding stations are less active during the height of ETC activity. It is important to note, however continued on page 17

the line at the Brotherhood was short. Ironically, she also enjoyed Christmas Stroll when the line was long and the traffic was thick. My mother was an inveterate people-watcher and sales hound. All she needed was one stack of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Buy one, Get One Freeâ&#x20AC;? sweatshirts to make her heart go pitter-pat. One group of men in Dickensian hats and cloaks prowled the bricks and cheered her soul, especially when she found out they were from blue collar Shrewsbury. She would sit downtown on a bench, listen to the singers, and watch the fur coats go by in the rain. My father, with as sure a grasp on this situation as ever, bought my mother a fur coat one winter before Stroll. She left it back in Wakefield.

My mother taught middle school science in my old school. By a trick of the travel agents and the skiers, Nantucketâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winter vacation is a week after the rest of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, so Mary came down to the island one February with an old friend of hers from college. They stayed in my apartment/converted garage/dentistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office behind the Vallettâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on Centre Street. February was as it still is, cold, windy, and snowless. The two of them walked through the downtown, bought bargains, sang the old songs, and left me to my grading. Then, with a storm impending, my mother sent her friend back to her family and wintered-over in the weather on-island.

As it always does, the snow fell north of the Canal and wind-whipped rain pelted the island. School was held, but she drove around the island and took pictures of the waves with her Instamatic.

Almost thirty years later, I see all that I missed that weekend. The hardest part of growing up is

realizing how stupid you were and continue to be, no matter your best efforts. Stupid is the one constant in my life; age has only taught me to expect it. What Mary must have thought, even in that cold apartment, about her son with a job and a life that was opening up before him. What a marvel I must have been, from baby to little leaguer to caddy to college to Mr. Barsanti in coat and tie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;How did this happen?â&#x20AC;? she may have thought. The following years have moved me around the room to her spot on the sofa; I think the same thing when I see my sons. How did I get here?

I have no idea.

I shuffle along in baby steps, going from day to day, bill to bill, tragedy to tragedy with an indomitable creep. You focus on what you can control, hope for the best, and laugh at the worst then wake up and do it again. To Mary, hope was a muscleâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not one that bulged in a sleeve, but that held your back firm. Hope didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t flare like a torch, but burned like a pilot light. Hope walked.

In her last year, my parents came out to the island with the matching set of aunts and uncles.

The cancer had come back, as had the chemotherapy, the wigs, and the bottle of Ensure. I piled the crowd into my little car and drove them to Miacomet so that they could walk to the ocean. My father, the aunts and uncles walked ahead while I stayed behind with Mary. October remained on-island, warm and breezy, with will â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;o the wisp clouds rolling overhead. The bushes were touched with red and the beach grass with winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brown. The crowd of relatives rounded a curve ahead of us and she held my arm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bobby?â&#x20AC;? she asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any paper with you, do you?â&#x20AC;?

A few minutes later, she emerged from the edge of the brush around the pond. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never mind.â&#x20AC;? She continued on. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just left my underwear there.â&#x20AC;?

that, while not poisonous, the guard hairs found on the ETC are irritants to the stomach lining of many animals including horses.

They’re climate indicators. ETC are extremely sensitive to temperature which serves them well as a species that feeds on fresh, spring leaves. They can take advantage of a warm spring and hatch early. I have successfully hatched them out up to a month early in captivity. They are used in many research projects, including at Nantucket’s Linda Loring Nature Foundation, to investigate the response to various aspects of global climate change including earlier springs, increased frost events, and potential ecological mismatches. While we’re still in the early stages for this kind of research on Nantucket, preliminary results show that our ETC track closely with minimum spring temperatures.

Natives Rule! While sometimes confused with the non-native invasive Gypsy Moth, the Eastern Tent Caterpillar is a native species to Nantucket and the northeast. As such, it has evolved with a series of checks and balances to live in this ecosystem. While they may do some damage to their host trees, ETC rarely kill a tree or shrub unless it is already weakened or otherwise unhealthy.

So, even though there all kinds of things we can learn from Eastern Tent Caterpillars, what do you do if you still want to get rid of them in your yard? First of all you could prevent them hatching by removing the egg masses during the fall or winter. That would involve scraping them off with a knife. If you ID where the eggs are, you could remove just the end of those branches. Alternatively, you could put sticky tape on the branch to stick the hatchlings so they can’t eat or travel the tree.

Whatever you decide to do, please do not spray an insecticide. There are no insecticides that are specific to ETC. Thus, if you spray for ETC, you will likely kill any bees, butterflies, or other pollinators in your yard. This will also limit birds to your property and cause a trickle down of harm and biodiversity loss.

Tickets are currently available on their website almanackartscolony.org and going fast. “It’s our only fundraiser and it’s really, really fun,” Director Callie Kever tells me as we tour the grounds on a crisp, spring day, pointing to the filed in which the bocce tournament is held. “It’s a good way to see the grounds.” The event is more than just bocce, however, with music by Four Easy Payments & Appalachian Uprising, unlimited BBQ, Beer and Wine.

Touring the grounds with Callie, it is hard not to imagine a team of writers hard at work, bouncing ideas of each other, or a musician playing a few chords and a fellow songwriter laying lyrics upon them, and Callie notes that the special thing about program is that at its heart, it is a collaborative effort. “We fly in mentors—anyone from a really well-known producer, or a songwriter at the top of their game—and they’ll come in for a week and sit and work with the artists. It’s sort of like an artist-in-residence program, but we don’t have any single artists at any given time, and that’s why we call it a colony,” she laughs.

Callie notes that last summer, local musicians Caleb Cressman, Andre Quackenbush, Ethan Philbrick, and Colin Gully (along with Songwriter’s colony alumnus Mark Stoney) recorded a song in the horse barn that was used in the opening scene of Screenwriter’s Colony alumna Sarah Adina Smith’s movie Buster’s Mal Heart (written while in residence), saying, “It was a full circle moment for Almanack Arts Colony!” And it’s collaboration just like this one that is exactly why the colony exists in the first place. The movie will be featured as part of the Film for Thought series at Nantucket Dreamland Theatre on Wednesday, June 7, with tickets at nantucketdreamland.org.

Callie says of the Songwriter’s colony, “the purpose is to foster collaborations between emerging and established songwriters, who would not normally have the opportunity to write and record together, by providing them the time and space to develop new material away from the pressures of the commercial songwriting business.” As for the Screenwriters Colony, several events are in store, including a nearly sold-out 5th annual Summer Soiree honoring Warren Beatty on July 22. And beginning mid-May until the end of October, the estate will be hosting writers for a week to a month at a time. Callie, who normally works alone continued on page 19

The grounds of the Almanack Arts Colony on the property, says that this is the time of year when she has company, and enjoys the communal dinners cooked by a professional chef on a daily basis, served to all the guests at the long wooden dining table in the heart of the main house.

As for the future, Callie mentions that they wish to expand their programming even more, and as we navigate around table saws and woodpiles, she tells me that renovations are being done to the barn in order to safely host large crowds.

“We don’t rent the space out, but a lot of people ask,” Callie says with a smile.

“It’s not something we necessarily are opposed to, but right now we use the space for our own purposes.”

Featured Restaurant: Brant Point Grill

Spectacular Spring Menu at BPG It wasn’t long after they opened for the season that we began to hear about the spring specials at Brant Point Grill. Three courses for $39 in a Nantucket restaurant known for fine dining is enough to draw even the most thrifty New Englander out of the house on a chilly May evening.

Then the buzz shifted from the value to how everyone was impressed with the meal and plans to head back before the summer crowds fill the dining room.

A look at their menu online clinched it: BPG would be Warm English Pea Soup our next stop.

The Brant Point Grill is tucked behind the elegant White Elephant Hotel on Easton Street, which means it’s dining room faces Nantucket Harbor withbeautiful waterfront views. During breakfast, Sunday brunch, and lunch, guests can watch the boats and the activity on nearby Children’s Beach. Evenings, the setting sun makes the water glisten till the stars come out.

Within this exclusive location and grand hotel, the Brant Point Grill is delightfully casual. It’s refined yet relaxed. No white linens or pretentious staff, they’ve got nothing to prove here! Dinners are served on the outdoor covered deck to take full advantage of the gorgeous view and the ambiance of a classic summer resort.

Until the weather warms (and after if needed), there are heaters in the rafters to keep diners cozy and clear panels that can be dropped to shelter from wind and weather.

From late afternoon until 11 pm, a light menu is also served in the BPG Bar, BPG Spring Salad

where there’s live entertainment on Fridays and every night in season.

The bar menu selection ranges from a Burger and Chowder to Lobster Salad Sliders and Short Rib Tacos.

Sunday brunch here is known for its raw bar, so we weren’t surprised to see fresh local oysters on both the bar Cured Hamachi menu and the dinner menu.

At the urging of our host, we tried two classic pub dishes from the bar menu.

The Charcuterie & Artisan Cheese Board is beautifully curated with four different cheeses, from a creamy Vermont Willoughby to an aged cheddar, arranged with wild boar sausage, fennel salami, slightly smoky sopressata, and thin slices of proscuitto. A colorful assortment of pickled vegetables, cornichons, and whole grain mustard provide a delightful crunch and delicious notes of acidity and spice.

Sommelier Robert Pruett suggests a glass of 2009 Finca Villacreses, Tempranillo as the perfect accompaniment.

The other “BPG Bite” we tasted and adored are the Beef and Veal Meatballs. This bar menu treat arrived in a cast-iron casserole, hot from the oven with an aroma that turned heads as it was brought to our table. The moist and very tender meatballs are topped with mozzarella and parmesan and served in a luscious pool of housemade marinara scented with basil. A fennel salad overtop adds a tasty anise crunch. (suggested pairing: 2015 Delas Frères, “SaintEsprit”) Because of all the rave reviews we’d heard about the Dine for $39 special, that’s what we chose first. menu), we settled on the Warm English Pea Soup and the Breaded Pork Chop.

The soup was the best pea soup we’ve ever had! Poured tableside over chunks of housecured salmon, salmon caviar, small croutons, plump fresh peas and pea shoots, the rich soup was full-flavored, creamy, and satisfying.

The salmon was good, but what we really enAtlantic Halibut joyed in the soup were the salty pops of caviar and the sweet fresh peas. (suggested pairing: 2013 Weingut Stadt Krems, Grüner Veltliner). The second course was also impressive: a massive 12-ounce bone-in chop, its thick, crisp breading enclosing superbly moist and tender pork. A handful of arugula and parmesan salad was served on top of the chop, and a tangy lemon-caper sauce poured over. Even the roasted red bliss potatoes deserve praise: the crunchy browned exteriors gently smashed to reveal fluffy white centers. Bravo Executive Chef Thomas William Pearson! (suggested pairing: 2013 Shea Wine Cellars, “Block 7,” Pinot Noir) From the regular dinner menu we ordered a trio of chilled seasonal appetizers. BPG Spring Salad is a gorgeous toss of greens, vegetables, and fruit that has an exuberant variety of pickled, fresh, sweet, juicy, and puckery flavors. (suggested pairing: 2014 Domaine Fouassier, “Clos de Bannon”) The Cured Hamachi is another stellar choice that excites your senses with its fresh, citrusy dressing of white soy vinaigrette, lime, ginger, and chili pepper drizzled over the sparkling fresh tuna. Pearls of tapioca, curls of shaved pickled cucumber, and twirls of salsify chips add a playful mix of textures and flavors. (suggested pairing: 2013 Temlo Rodríguez, “Gabo do Xil”) Our favorite appetizer of the evening was Chef Pearson’s Chicken Liver Mousse, offered with the Dine for $39 and served as a special the evening we were at BPG. Each bite of the creamy, satiny-smooth mousse filled our mouths with flavor, but milder than most: more like foie than chicken liver.

Grill is the place to go! Their pastureraised steaks are all-natural, free of antibiotics and hormones. And under the expert direction of Chef Pearson, they are cooked perfectly to temperature. We paired the tender 12ounce Pineland Farms NY Strip with their Oscar Style topping for a sensational entree.

Cavatelli Pasta Sweet crab enveloped in a luxurious bearnaise covered the top of the steak; thin, tender-crisp spears of asparagus were draped over. We highly recommend this add-on to any of the BPG steaks, even the Surf and Turf for Two. (suggested pairing: 2014 Ridge, “East Bench,” Zinfandel) We were intrigued by the new preparation of Atlantic Halibut that matched the fresh fish with foraged mushrooms, salt-roasted beets, and rhubarb, and are happy to report that it is as tasty as it is beautiful. The earthy, sweet, tart flavors are delicious with the fresh fish, a ruby-red sauce poured tableside adds an extra touch of sweetness. (suggested pairing: 2016 Domaine Ott, “Chateau Romassan,” Rosè) Our vegetarian friends were very happy with the Spring Salad Starter followed by the Cavatelli Pasta. The pasta in this entree is more of a backdrop to the medley of spring vegetables: spring peas, English peas, fava beans, ramps, and shiitake mushrooms all topped with a luscious dollop of smoked ricotta. Pair this with the Asparagus and Parmesan side salad for even more fresh spring flavors. (suggested pairing: 2014 Ceretto, Arneis) Dinner proved to be a homerun when desserts were presented. Pastry Chef Marcia Bruce’s pretty platings were perfect followups to Chef Pearson’s appealing presentations. It was impossible to choose a favorite, but the standouts are the light and tangy Rhubarb Mousse with touille cookie “spoon”; the classic Baked Alaska in an whimsical beehive design with poached pineapple, coconut, and caramel; the dark and delicious Chocolate Bouchon with caramel ice cream, meringue kisses, and chocolate-pistachio brittle; and the flavorful Ricotta Cheesecake with bruleed top, fabulous blueberry-lime ice cream, and fruit compote.

On May 18, the AAN will host an opening reception for Megan Hinton, their current Artist-in-Residence at their Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive. Hinton works in oil, with ink on paper and creates monoprints; her paintings and works on paper have been exhibited throughout North America.

“We are always thrilled to welcome Megan back to AAN. She has been a popular and beloved member of the association since the early ‘90’s when she was just a student working on her MFA,” said AAN executive director, Cecil Barron Jensen.
