Weaving His Talents into an Island Tradition by Jack Fritsch When you hear mention of Nantucket, you think of our amazing history, unique town, unspoiled beaches and island landscapes, and of course Nantucket Lightship Baskets. And when you think about Nantucket Baskets, you quickly think of Nap Plank… or you should… he is one of our finest masters of this historic craft. I met with him recently at The Corner Table for a great conversation. Nap hails originally from just off Cape in the coastal town of Cohasset. He grew up enamored with the sea and shore, boats and sailing, raised as he says “a free range child,” allowed the freedom to roam and explore, with the support and encouragement of his parents to follow his muse. A talented carpenter and woodworker by training, he ventured out to Montana but was quickly disappointed: he explains that he didn’t like what they were doing there, and could take no pride in his work. He knew he belonged in New England, comfortable with our traditions of architecture and craftsmanship. He first came out to Nantucket in 1972 and returned many times over the next decade (camping out in the State Forest he admits mischievously, adding he hopes the Statute of Limitations has run out on that little infrac-

The Currency of Memories by Robert P. Barsanti On a bright Saturday in early May, one of the young men and I bought a dress shirt at Murray’s. Sometime in the winter, or at some other time when I wasn’t looking, the men’s section of the old store had been rearranged. It hadn’t been rehabbed into oblivion, nor were there new subdivisions in it, nor did the Preservationist need to be called. The dress shirts were no longer behind the counter, the bow-ties weren’t spinning on a rack, and the winter coats were gone. I felt myself go faint in the light of such change, then slowly recover my composure. With professional help, the young man was measured, a white shirt was selected, and my bank account lost a sum of cash. Lunch followed. On the back deck of Met on Main, we sat near a trio of older women. They wore scarves, purple, and bright smiles. One of them told the waitress “It’s her birthday. We come here every year for her birthday.” Then they ordered a round of beers and the fun began. Saturday was a good day to be on the back patio. The wind skipped over us, but the sun warmed us on the bricks. If you sat still and watched closely, the buds on the tree were slowly building. The season was creeping into place, and in some weeks, a line would form for our tables and the wait staff would be scurrying. But not now. I did not ask, but I wondered when the three of them started celebrating birthdays out here. That location on Main Street had had more than a few businesses in it over the last thirty years. My memory, sodden and hole-ridden, has the Espresso Café and the Sweet Shop, and I can remember a few others but the names, menus, and signage have slipped into the outgoing tide. continued on page 24

New Shows for May Spring continues with two new exhibitions opening during the month of May in the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery. The Wind & The Wave opens with a reception on Friday, May 11 from 6-8 pm and the annual Artist Open Exhibition opening reception will be held on Friday May 25 from 6-8 pm. “The Wind & The Wave has a maritime theme with works focusing on anything on or near the ocean, from boats to birds and shoreline vistas. Upstairs on the second floor, the 2D to 3D exhibition featuring three-dimensional pieces and works on paper will remain on display,” said gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “As the warmer weather commences and people begin to think summer, we thought a nautically inspired maritime exhibition full of warm colors would help jump-start the excitement of the season, especially after such a cold and raw winter and spring,” added Greenhalgh. The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition continues to showcase works by watercolorist Romana Rainey. The Wind & The Wave will be on display from May 11 - 21 in conjunction with the 2D to 3D exhibition, at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. All art submissions are welcomed by the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) for its annual Artist Open Exhibition, on display beginning May 25 and running through June 4. The exhibition is open to the community-at-large for fine art submission—including cell phone photographs. “The majority of our exhibitions showcase the work of our AAN members, however during this exhibition, we open the gallery to all artists. We encourage community members and artists to participate in this special show, which is one of four open shows we’re offering this season,” said AAN curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier. For the eighth consecutive year, AAN is also pleased to invite cell phone photographers to submit images for the Cellography exhibition. “This popular show-within-a-show hangs on the second floor in the old school style of pho-

Animals on the Move Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation As we start to get outside in the warm spring weather, we may be noticing more signs of the wildlife around us: a few deer tracks here, some rabbit scat there, a tent caterpillar tent among the trees, as well as a bird nest or two in the shrubs or the top of an outdoor shower. But what should we do when we see an animal in distress? According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “The best way to help a wild animal is to leave it alone.” Most animals do not need or want your help. Many wild animals want nothing to do with humans. They do anything they can to get away (including biting and fighting). If an animal is truly in distress, then trying to “help” may cause undo stress to the creature. Many times, this stress can make matters worse.
BABY BIRDS Spring is breeding season for many species, but we people seem to have the most interactions with birds this time of year. This is possibly due to many more nests in our own yards. Birds in our region make all kinds of nests of many different shapes, sizes, and materials. No matter the location or nesting material, nests mean eggs and ultimately baby birds. So, if you find a nest, what do you do? Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Do not touch or get too close! A spring nest is likely an active nest. Parent birds do not need you checking on their nest or stressing them out while they gather nesting material and food. They’re soon going to be new parents; there’s enough to worry about!

• Do not remove nests from their location. Most of the birds we encounter on Nantucket are protected under the Migratory Bird Act of 1918. It is illegal to take and possess eggs, nests, and bird parts (including feathers) without a federal permit. “But what if I find a baby bird on the ground?” • Many bird species such as robins, jays, crows, and owls leave the nest and spend as many as 2-5 days on the ground before they can fly. This is a normal and vital part of the young birds' development. While they are on the ground, the birds are cared for and protected by their parents and are taught vital life skills (finding food, identifying predators, flying). • Do not pick up the bird! Taking these birds into captivity denies them the opportunity to learn skills they need to survive in the wild. Unless a bird is injured, it is essential to leave them outside to learn from their parents. • If you are concerned that a bird fell from its nest too early, you may try and return the bird to its nest. If the nest has been destroyed or is unreachable, you may substitute a small box lined with tissue and suspend it from a branch near to where you believe its nest is located. • Birds have a poor sense of smell and very strong parental instincts, which means they will usually continue caring for their young. Raising wild birds in captivity is always a last resort.

by Carl Oscar Olson There are certain events on Nantucket that mark the time of the year and the change of the season. The Daffodil Festival is undoubtedly the start of spring on the island, while Race Week and The Boston Pops a clear sign that the busy season is peaking. Labor Day brings the frantically busy part of the season to a close, and the Thanksgiving Tree Lighting ushers in the holidays. The start of summer, though, is marked by the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival. Since 1996, this festival has been a tradition favored by thousands of locals and visitors alike. With crowds coming from across the country and around the world, “Wine Fest” is widely considered one of the nation’s most celebrated wine and food festivals. It honors and engages the island’s unique community and holds true to Nantucket’s one-of-a-kind style. The event got its start 22 years ago as a one-day wine tasting on the beach in Siaconset, the picture-perfect village on the eastern end of the island. Over the years, with a helping hand from residents, restaurants, and retailers, founder Denis Toner transformed it into one of the most loved and longed-for event in its category. From the humble, hopeful beginnings in ‘Sconset, this year the event will draw more than 3,000 people to its new location at Jetties Beach in the heart of Nantucket. In spite of it’s ever-growing number of restaurants and chefs, vintners, wineries, and patrons, the Nantucket Wine and Food Festival manages to stay true to its roots as a special, intimate event. In 2017, to acknowledge the increasing role of the culinary events and chefs, the Nantucket Wine Festival officially changed it’s name to the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival. continued on page 22

NHA Lecture Series Begins On Tuesday, May 15 at 6 pm, Nantucket native, author, and historian Matthew Stackpole will give an illustrated talk on the Charles W. Morgan, the last of an American whaling fleet that once numbered more than 2,700 vessels. Built and launched in 1841, the Morgan is now America’s oldest commercial ship still afloat—only the USS Constitution is older. Stackpole will also discuss the experience of the vessel’s thirty-eighth voyage after undergoing an intensive restoration process in 2014. This lecture is part of the Candle Factory Lecture Series, which features historians and authors as they discuss themes of whaling, from ships to whale hunt artwork, and the ways in which humans relate to the sea through stories. The lecture series continues on May 22 with “O’er the wide and tractless sea”: Original Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt” a talk by Michael P. Dyer, Curator of History at New Bedford Whaling Museum. And on May 29, author Philip Hoare will talk about the ways in which we relate to the sea’s natural history; it’s whales, birds, as well as its myths. For more on programs and events at the Nantucket Historical Association, visit Nha.org or call 508-228-1894.

Navigating Wine & Food Fest Weekend by Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie What once started out as a small gathering for a handful of wineries to pour at a Grand Tasting and a few intimate wine dinners hosted in friend’s homes has grown immensely to become one of the most highly regarded annual wine events in the country. With so much to celebrate during the funfilled Nantucket Wine & Food Festival weekend (May 16-20, 2018), here is a snapshot of the events worthy of attention from a wine professional insider’s point of view.
AN EXPERIENTIAL WINE JOURNEY As a primer to all the excitement of this annual weekend, many of the seasonal finer dining establishments are already open the week before. If you happen to be on-island then, you get to sample this season’s newest menu items, chat with the sommeliers about their winter wine travels, and be the guinea pig at any new local watering holes: all probably without needing a reservation (though it’s better to be safe than not get a table). The Nantucket Culinary Center, located in the heart of downtown Nantucket, provides a food-and-wine-centric gathering space for the dynamic, yet intimate, year-round community. On Saturday, May 12, they will be hosting An Experiential Wine Journey with Sommelier Ieva Aldins, known for her time spent working the wine floor at Straight Wharf Restaurant (and also on the yoga mat for when you need to unwind after wine). Here you will learn a vocabulary of aromatic and taste components through your senses. Smell items that are commonly referred to in tasting notes, along with tasting components that define the structure of the wine. No prior wine knowledge is necessary. Tickets for this limited engagement event are available for purchase at nantucketculinary.com/classes/tasting101-2018. continued on page 23

tion). He was drawn here initially by our harbor and close ties to the water. He loved the history of Nantucket, and the magic feel of the town in its state of preservation. He moved here full time in 1981 or ‘82, and didn’t set foot off-island for almost nine months. After finally stepping off for a few days, he was surprised on his return by having such a strong feeling of “I’m home. This is where I belong.â€? In those early days out here he quickly became friends with Allen Reed, another master craftsman that came from a hometown near his own. Allen hired Nap to help with carpentry and repairs around the Chicken Box and other properties. He turned his talent to pursuing his own projects, and remembers with pride making a dinghy rigged with a bowsprit, a dovetailed box, and a unique quarterboard fashioned in the unusual form of looking down on the deck of a ship. The joy he had from this craftsmanship made him realize he would never be suited for an office job‌ he had to be working with his hands. When Allen taught him how to make Nantucket baskets, his fate was sealed. “I loved that you could make a living here working in the arts or crafts. Artists are encouraged and enabled here, in a way you wouldn’t find many places on the mainland.â€? Nap became a full time basket maker, and was soon recognized as one of the great innovators in the trade. While working away filling orders for the usual open baskets and covered purses, his mind would wander in other directions. He always
liked “little things he explained with a laugh, and one day he started making a very small (4-inch or so) heart-shaped basket of all things. When another professional basket maker saw what he was doing, they chided “Why are you wasting your time with that? No one will ever buy that silly thing! Of course someone soon came along and bought the unique basket before it was even half finished. Our free-range basket maker was off following his own muse again. He continued making unique shapes and ever smaller baskets. He remembers Joyce Gardner, a woman who traveled out here in the 80s just to take basket-making lessons, encouraging him to pursue his miniatures and to make them true, proper miniatures, where all the components are diminished in correct proportion. A quick tour of his miniatures at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum will show that the rest is truly history. Looking ahead, Nap is very encouraged about the future of the Nantucket basket tradition. He explains that in years past most baskets were made by professionals who, under economic constraints, had to make baskets quickly, and in a fairly limited variety of traditional forms. These days many baskets are made by hobbyists, who have the leisure to devote the time necessary for high quality and a freedom of imagination. Nantucket baskets have also become hugely popular in Japan, bringing this tradition into a new era: the Japanese love of precise craftsmanship and artistic detail are helping to elevate Nantucket baskets to a new height. Nap has in fact just returned from several weeks touring and teaching in Japan (keep your eyes out around town for a rare “Nap Plank continued on page 18

World Tour 2018 concert t-shirt)! Nap has now been making Nantucket baskets for about 35 years. He still loves living here (“even in the summer it’s a great place to be… most of the tourists—90% of them—are so happy, walking around with big smiles on their faces! It’s great to be around that”). He and his wife Gabrielle have raised two accomplished children: Chloe has inherited Nap’s love of sailing and the sea, pursuing a career at Mass Maritime, and Phaedra has clearly inherited the Plank artistic talent in music and more. He enthuses that “Nantucket is a great environment for kids, the community is very encouraging… there is so much here, extracurricular and all, the girls experiSome of Nap Plank's miniaenced so much… they’re very well rounded.” Is there anything he doesn’t love about ture baskets on display in the Nantucket? The build-up. The over-develop- Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum on Union Street. ment is threatening what makes the island and town so special. Does he have any proud secrets? Would he share something that nobody knows about Nap Plank? With a smart nod of the head… and a delighted grin, he explains “Yes. I am a card-carrying member of the sovereign Cherokee Nation.” Who knew? (Well I did actually, but we go way back). After 35 years of basket making, what lies in the future? Is there anything you would love to do? He answers without hesitation: “Build boats. Small, large, any really, any kind of sailing vessel. It would be wonderful to be able to get away and sail, a lot. Even just out in the harbor every day. Mmm, to be able to go gunk holing up and down the coast.” Anything else? Staring me straight in the eye with a determined smile, he responds “ I would like to become, really become, an expert on the Ukulele. I’d like to give everyone in the world a ukulele!” George Harrison would have agreed. Nap can be found by appointment only at The Nantucket Basket Works, 508-228-2518. NANTUCKET ISLAND’S

tos hanging from clothespins, as if they’re drying in a darkroom,” said gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the public to showcase their cell phone photos in a simplistic yet modern approach.” This year, AAN will add an interactive component to the Cellography exhibition. Using the hashtag #aancellography2018, AAN will engage the community via social media and by installing four iPads to use in the gallery to increase visitor interaction with art and artists. Photos tagged with the AAN hashtag on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter will be shown in a continuously updating slideshow for visitors to view alongside the printed photos in the exhibition. Gallery visitors can also visit the Instagram accounts of artist members giving them more access to an artist’s work. AAN member and island photographer D. Clyde Myers will curate the Cellography display. People who wish to participate in Cellography may bring up to five unframed photographs for sale. The photographs must be no larger than eight-by-ten inches in size. Participants in Artist Open may drop off up to two regular submissions for the exhibition, and/or five cellography works on Tuesday, May 22 at AAN’s 19 Washington St. gallery, between 10 am and 5 pm. Art must be professionally presented, and pieces may be juried for space. AAN’s community includes over two hundred and sixty artist members, who display their work during fourteen different exhibitions throughout the season. Visitors will find jewelry, oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and some textiles. The gallery is open Monday Megan Hinton through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm.

Although it may seem “safer” to raise young birds in captivity, birds (and other wild animals) raised without the benefit of learning from their parents only have a minimal chance of survival when released.
REPTILES
IN THE
ROAD
Why did the turtle cross the road? Because she had somewhere to be! Spring is also known as “turtle season” to many reptile enthusiasts. With roads crisscrossing the island, turtles are often seen crossing the pavement to get from their wintering grounds to a wetland or water area. Alternately, turtles may be going from the wetland or pond to their nesting areas— often sandy hills or open grasslands. If you see a turtle on the road, here are a few tips essential for turtle safety (and your safety): • First up: slow down, stop, and let it pass. If it is stopped or if you think you can SAFELY move the turtle, follow the directions below. • If moving a turtle, always bring it to the road edge in the direction it was headed. If you don’t s/he will likely try to cross the road again. (Turtles have places to go, too!) • Never pick up a turtle by the tail. You can permanently damage their vertebrae. • Even if snapping turtles look old and slow, they can move fast and are likely to bite because they feel threatened. If you have a shovel or a broom in your car, you can help them scoot across the road. The warm, black pavement of many roads can also be a perfect spot for a basking snake. These cold-blooded creatures need the sun’s rays to warm continued on page 21

their bodies. This is especially true in the spring as they become more active after the dormant winter. Be on the lookout for snakes on the road. And, please, don’t try and run them over! We love our Nantucket native snakes. As a reminder: none of them are venomous. If you see a snake on the road, slow down, stop, and let it pass. You can also try and get it to cross by giving it a little nudge, if possible. Just seeing your shadow will sometimes entice a snake to move on.
INJURED WILDLIFE If you see an injured animal, the best thing to do is to call the Environmental Police Officer on Nantucket. IMPORTANT: before you “rescue” any wildlife, be sure it actually needs your help. If you find an animal in distress and you’re sure it needs help, call the Nantucket Environmental Police Officer (EPO) (508-257-6932). The EPO is also our game warden and has the knowledge of wildlife and the training to know what to do. When you call the EPO, be ready with information such as where the animal is, what kind of animal it is, and any other facts. Be sure to accurately describe what you see and not what you think is happening. You can also try the non-emergency police line to reach the animal control officer 508-228-1212. We do not have any licensed wildlife rehabilitators on-island, which makes rescue of many injured species difficult if not impossible, though sometimes animals are transported off-island. Many baby animals are left alone all day long, relying on camouflage for protection. Removing them from their hiding spots may mean they are vulnerable to predators and their parents won’t be able to find them. To learn more about the wildlife found on Nantucket, try a bird or nature walk. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation has walk opportunities with experienced staff throughout the year (llnf.org); in-season, The Maria Mitchell Association (mariamitchell.org) also offers nature walks and marine life expeditions. The Maria Mitchell Association Natural Science Museum opens in June and has both live and stuffed examples of Nantucket fauna.

New this year, Jetties Beach is being added as an additional venue for the “Culinary Village” — a refreshing change of scenery with sand underfoot and waves within view. This new location is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 18, 19, and 20, and the scene of the very popular Bluegrass Brunch, Rosé Sunset Clambake, Junior Top Chef competition, and the NanTEXAS Get Your Grill On events. More than a dozen culinary demonstrations and booksignings by star chefs including Jeremy Sewall, Lydia Shire, and Barbara Lynch will be held in the Culinary Village at Jetties. In addition, more than 60 exhibitors will offer samples and wares. As if the finest wines and culinary experiences on Earth weren’t enough, Wine Fest brings so much more to the table. Experience the finest from American and International spirits and cocktails, mixers, craft beer and soda, and more. There’s even live music and handmade jewelry. Stimulate all the senses at the Nantucket Wine and Food Festival. The mission of Wine Fest, however, is more than just providing a good time. The Nantucket Wine & Food Festival isn’t the only thing that has gone through some changes since its inaugural year. Nantucket has changed, too. The population has grown, both permanent residents and vacationers, and with that growth came construction. There simply isn’t as much usable space as there once was, so finding the right venue seems to be a challenge that comes with each new year of the event. For the past few years, The White Elephant has been the primary home to the island’s festivalgoers and is still HQ for registration and where NWFF holds its Grand Tastings, most Signature Events, and many of the seminars. Again for 2018, a few NWFF events will be held in the Nantucket Yacht Club. Some events will also be at The Nantucket Hotel & Resort. And, of course, the Great Wines in Grand Houses locations are secret to all but those few who are participating in these very exclusive events with ticket prices ranging up to $1,295 a person.
over two decades proceeds from the Wine Festival have helped support numerous Nantucket non-profits and organizations. Their current mission is to focus on Nantucket’s next generation. The Nantucket Wine Festival Charitable Foundation, the charitable arm of the festival, has a focus this year on the Culinary Arts Mentoring Program. It provides educational speakers, field trips, visiting chefs, and paid employment opportunities to the youth of Nantucket. Its culmination, The Annual Nantucket Wine Festival Junior Top Chef Competition, directly supports the Nantucket High School Culinary Arts Scholarship Fund. With more than 60 events packed in to just 5 days in May, volunteers are a crucial component to the success of the Wine Fest. To learn more about the fun and exciting volunteer opportunities available, email volunteer@nwfest.net. Tickets to the Nantucket Wine and Food Festival are selling out fast. Navigating Wine Festival from page 12
SATURDAY NIGHT SOIREE The latest and greatest addition to the Signature Events of Nantucket Wine Festival in the past few years has hands down been La Féte. Taking place on Saturday, May 19, this convivial feast brings guests together with visiting vignerons, world-renowned chefs, experienced sommeliers, and other avid wine collectors in order to taste, share, and celebrate some of the world’s greatest wines with one another. It is a wine dinner event like none other where there are no rules other than each guest is invited to bring a special bottle of wine that they would like to share with their tablemates. For an event of this caliber, it is strongly suggested that you bring a wine of pedigree, perhaps from an older vintage or a gem that you have been holding on to for that special occasion. Keep in mind that you will be enjoying a multi-course meal, which allows you the opportunity to bring white, red or dessert wine or even a bottle of port! A little due diligence to find out what is on the menu for the evening will also help you to decide which wine to bring. If you are still not sure or don’t have a bottle you think worthy enough of the occasion, consult with your favorite sommelier at the local bottle shop to help you discover what your treasure of the evening will be. In order to best serve you, contact them with at least two weeks notice to find something rare or order an item they may not currently have in stock. Book your seat at nantucketwinefestival.com/events/signature-events BONUS TIP: Bring a back-up bottle. On the unlikely chance that your bottle might be corked or you don’t care for the wines that others have brought, you will be prepared. Think of it as insurance whether you end up opening the bottle or not.
TITO’S YAPPY HOUR WITH NISHA Nantucket is definitely a dogfriendly place. So much so that pups are brought here to the island from other places for them to find their washashore “furever” homes! Here is an opportunity to support the organization that coordinates the travel and care of these beloved four-legged animals at this super cool fundraising event. Tito’s Handmade Vodka based out of Austin, Texas, is know as “The Vodka for Dog People.” They will be hosting a Yappy Hour at The Culinary Village at Jetties Beach on Sunday morning of the Nantucket Wine & Food Fest. Toys and treats will be available for the pups, while owners can

begin their day with a Tito’s “Hair of the Dog” Bloody Mary. All of the monies from ticket sales and donations from this event will go directly to Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals, locally known as NISHA. Tito’s Handmade Vodka has graciously offered to match any of the funds raised. Therefore, be sure to bring the gang along knowing that your Bloody Mary will do more for this community than just help you seek some clarity on Sunday morning. nantucketsafeharborforanimals.org/event/yappy-hour-at-wine-festival
CAN YOU HEAR YOUR WINE? WSET Advanced Wine Educator Jerry Siegel, owner of WineScripts LLC will conduct your experience with the island’s own talented musicians of the Nantucket Music Center. This event is a benefit for the Nantucket Music Center. You will never hear wine the same way again!
IN-STORE POURS While many of the weekend’s tasting events are ticketed, be sure to take advantage of the complimentary events hosted at Épernay Wine & Spirits. Check the calendar in this paper for details. Here you’ll get to spend time one-on-one with a luminary from the winery, and these tastings can be a quick casual stop-in between the main events and a place to regroup with friends before for the next event. Currency of Memories from page 4
& eliquid, hookah and shisha, and more!
We are an island of mementoes. Every store, every window, every brick is soaked into memory. Since so little of downtown changes year-to-year, summer-to-summer, the reminders become overpowering. Nobody walks through the Natick Mall with the ghosts of history leading a tour. But downtown Nantucket, from Murray’s down to the Pacific Club, stays about the same. The ghosts sit on the benches and bike down the bricks. If you are of an age, you can’t look at the building across Federal Street from the Hub, and not remember Tonkin’s. The buildings remind us of what they were. And they remind us of what we were. For me to remember how Murray’s and the Espresso looked like, is to remember who I was. I was younger, stronger, and dumber then. So many of my blessings and curses were unimagined. I have survived much and squandered even more with a take out cup of hazelnut coffee in my hand. The present can be the vision when you walk through the structures of the past. Fifty becomes twenty in the shade of a brick wall and the warmth of a May afternoon. History has a currency. You pay your initiation fee in stories, then retell them for a membership fee. The more stories you know, the richer you are and the more rooted you become. Later that night, I sat outside an old friend’s house with old friends in the fading light and the building chill. Almost all of us had worked together for twenty years and could trade stories the way bridge players trade trumps. In the gathering dark, we talked of Teddy Kennedy and his adventures at the Muse. I had been a bouncer and Ritch had been a bartender and we had been there. We had worked through Phish, through NRBQ, through the knock off Chippendales and even the Dave Matthews Band. We bid up our mutual histories and played our cards over and over, with chips shuffling this way and that. We play this pleasant game. We are who we were in the stories. The past gives us life and character. The currency of history falls over time. The number of people who remember Bingo in the window of Hardy’s grows smaller and smaller every year; the card players at the table drift away. We only impress ourselves with the stories. Those who came here more recently will nod and smile, then move on to pick up another blouse from Lily Pulitzer. Time wins this game. At a recent yard sale at the Brotherhood, I bought a framed picture of Grace Grossman. Grace sat in a wing chair in the sitting room at the Jared Coffin House, smiling into the camera; well dressed, mannered, and in her element. And I bought the picture for two dollars. I could have picked up the pictures of Lucretia Coffin Mott and Maria Mitchell for the same amount, but I left them for someone else. I knew Grace only tangentially. We had met, we had been introduced, but I was someone more familiar with the upstairs bathroom at the Muse than with the front rooms at the Jared Coffin House. But I remembered the good that she and her husband had done for the island. I know what she represented. It’s hard to see Time conquer her and leave her on the cobblestones for a few bucks. Her deeds should hold the implacable force off, but they won’t, not even for Grace. It didn’t for Gilles and Phil at Murrays, nor for Mimi at Mitchell’s Bookstore, nor will it for any of us trading stories on the back deck. But it is May and the summer is before us. History is an old man’s game. For the young man with me, his stories begin now, when he had lunch with his father. He may remember his father’s Bloody Mary, his macaroni and cheese, or even the chatty group of purple, beer-drinking ladies. The ghosts cannot enjoy the day. No currency can buy the bright sunlight of May, when lunch has arrived, a young man has a new white shirt (for Prom!), and the afternoon awaits. The past only hints at what we were, not what we will be.
