Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
Pairings for Your Catch of the Day by Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie One of the many benefits of living on the pristine island of Nantucket is that you are completely surrounded by water. In every direction you turn, almost all roads lead to a serene sandy beach. There is a sense of peace and serenity in being on the water, and that is an enormous draw not only for locals, but also for those who make their annual pilgrimage to the island. The ocean provides us with a bounty of nourishment to our souls and to our bellies. What better way to experience all that Mother Ocean has to offer than by experiencing the fun, excitement, and delight of a day fishing charter off the coast of the Grey Lady? Even better is adding the perfect wine pairing to enjoy with your hard-earned catch of the day. Here you will find a small catch of local fishing charters and what makes each of them unique for your special day spent with them, along with the perfect wine pairing for your catch of the day!
IN-SHORE FISHING SPECIALIST For those who are new to being on the water and want to keep it closer to home on their first voyage, look no further than Topspin Fishing with Captain Carl Bois. Their specialty is in-shore fishing on a 32’ Judge boat. Comfortably accommodating up to 6 people on this gem of a boat, they always offer the flexibility to customize charters specifically to your needs. Spending a half day on the water is not only a great way to spend time with the grandkids that you only get to see a few times a year, but a memory that should become an annual tradition. Pick your targeted species of fish you are on the hunt for or try a little of everything on this charter. Be on the look-out for other ocean wildlife and pelagic bird species on while cruising around on this continued on page 17

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
Box of Tears by Robert P. Barsanti My son came back from April vacation with a date for prom. This fact rose up from the sea and flopped up onto the beach in front of me. I looked at this heaving thing and, as one does, accepted that this is what must be. I hate prom. It comes prancing up to the kids with unreasonable expectations and unhealthy bills. A dance in the spring rolls downhill, gathers moss, and becomes a practice wedding complete with promposals, tea-roses, and backless gowns. Then, after photos and dancing and hairstyles coming undone in Beyonce’s insistent beat, the young drive up to Gibb’s Pond for what the lawyers would refer to, as “victimization risk.” Yet, we, their parents, have made a full and complete botch out of initiating our children into adulthood. The quiet, stately, and accustomed path through high school to graduation, complete with driver’s licenses, summer jobs, and confirmation practice has dissolved in an acid rain of fentanyl, suicide, and gunfire. Our children don’t emerge from childhood so much as they survive it. If, after a spring of overdoses and chemotherapy, they ask for a fairy tale dance, can we deny them that? My son has been lucky; he has arrived at this age in a long march of baby steps. The daily churn of donuts and driving distracted us from the build up of the years. We watched his grades, ferried him to practices and concerts, and let the days pile up. We keep replacing his shoes, he remains the same guy, same smile, and then time stuttered, seized, shaked. And jumped to now. Before this year’s prom, the couples and their supporting actors met amid the perennials in one of the Bartlett Greenhouses. Fog and wind deprived them of a more memorable and timeless Instagram setting in the dunes. Still, the potting soil, fertilizer, lilies and lilacs, clustered about them and told a story that we all known was coming. For this night, they got the protection of the greenhouse. I recognized more parents than I had expected—we had all been in the playgrounds many years ago and met and re-met at the grocery store—but only now, paired with graceful and handsome young people, did we finally

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Sandplain grasslands of the northeastern United States are important hotspots for native plant and animal biodiversity. Nantucket has some of the largest expanses of intact sandplain grassland and heathland habitat. With much of this landscape lost to development up and down the Atlantic coast, almost 90% of the world’s sandplain grassland occurs on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and a slice of Long Island. We know these habitats for their Black Huckleberry, sweet Low- and Highbush Blueberries, fragrant Northern Bayberry, and Little Blue-stem grasses rolling in the winds. The grasses, low shrubs, and multitude of wildflowers define this habitat. These plant communities are host to a number of regionally and globally rare species as well including the Eastern Silvery Aster, Nantucket Shadbush, and the spectacular New England Blazing Star, among others. While plants are the cornerstone for ecosystems everywhere, sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands support a diversity of life found in few other locations. Northern Harrier Hawks and Short-Eared Owls hunt and nest in the grassland/shrub mix. Grasshopper Sparrows eat, sleep, and nest on the ground—impossible to do off-island where skunks, raccoons, and other nest predators are about. Grasslands and heathlands are also host to a multitude of insect fauna, including at least 19 rare species. This includes important pollinators, dragonflies, butterflies, and moths. Sandplain grasslands are early successional habitats, which means they require maintenance and active management to stay grasslands. In some areas of Nantucket, high winds, salt spray, and deer browse are enough “management” to maintain the grassland mix. However, many properties require more disturbance to prevent woody shrubs from becoming the dominant vegetation. That is why you may see large mowers and evidence of prescribed fire in your favorite conservation areas. Many of the island’s conservation groups have been working for decades to maintain and sometimes reclaim sandplain grasslands. Recently, however, continued regrowth of woody vegetation, increasing threats due to climate change, and limitations on management methods have inspired local conservation professionals to look beyond Nantucket to see what others are doing in similar habitats. The Sandplain Grassland Network, a new regional partnership among scientists and land managers, was formed in 2016 to improve management of the globally rare sandplain grassland habitat. The group has been working over the past two years to coalesce published papers, unpublished reports, and conduct interviews with experts. The culmination of this collaborative work is a report, released this month, which details the status of the northeastern sandplain grasslands. The report calls for more effective management that will require increased use of mowing and prescribed fire. The report also urges greater use of these techniques during the growing season, when their influences in recontinued on page 20

Take It from the Top Aspiring actors ages 10 and older (up to college-age) will have the opportunity to develop skills through music, dance, and acting at a special workshop this July offered by Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. Participants will learn the latest Broadway material from Mean Girls, Sponge Bob Squarepants, Hamilton and more by working with some of Broadway’s best, including Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford (Sunday in the Park with George, Midsummer Night’s Dream, You Can’t Take It with You, Wicked), Paul Canaan (Kinky Boots dance captain and original Angel), Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie), David Dabbon (Disaster, Sondheim on Sondheim), Leslie Kritzer (Something Rotten, Elf, Sondheim on Sondheim), and Joe Tapper (You Can’t Take It with You) This three day musical theatre intensive on July 16, 17, and 18, will help young artists discover how to strengthen audition skills, master dance technique, and perform with confidence; it culminates with a unique showcase for friends and family the evening of July 18. To register for this National Theatre Arts Alliance Broadway Youth Workshop, contact Theatre Workshop of Nantucket at 508-228-4305 or visit theatrenantucket.org. A limited number of scholarships are available. On Wednesday, June 6, the curtain goes up on Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s next production It’s Only a Play by Terrence McNally. This hilarious show is a Broadway comedy about the comedy of Broadway. It’s opening night of Peter Austin’s new play, and he anxiously awaits to see if his show is a hit. With his career on the line, he shares his big First Night with his “best friend, a television star, his novice producer, his doped-up diva, his genius director, a lethal drama critic, and a fresh-off-the-bus coat check attendant on his first night in Manhattan. Raucous, ridiculous, and tender—this production proves that sometimes the biggest laughs happen off the stage. Performances are Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday, with Sunday matinees from June 6–July 7 with tickets available at the TWN Box Office, 508-228-4305, and online at theatrenantucket.org.

Book Festival Now Accepting Items for Silent Auction The Nantucket Book Festival, now on the cusp of presenting its 7th annual event, is seeking donations of goods and experiences for its Silent Auction to be held from June 15 to 17. Items donated for the Silent Auction will be displayed in the Atheneum Garden on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16. On Sunday, June 17, the items will be moved to the Festival’s “Cisco Send-Off Party” on Sunday, June 17 at Cisco Brewers from 12 noon to 3 pm, where the final bids will be tallied and the winners announced. The Cisco event is open to the public, where last-minute bids are sure to be fast and furious. Although any donation is appreciated, the most popular items have proven to be “experiences”: catered dinners, tours of Nantucket landmarks, tickets to events, and gift certificates. Maddie Hjulstrom, Executive Director of the Nantucket Book Foundation (the nonprofit that produces the Festival), is quick to give credit to the local businesses and individual donors who contribute. “Without a doubt, there would be no Book Festival without our sponsors and donors. Whether it’s rooms for our authors, or someone underwriting a lunch or dinner, or Young’s Bicycle Shop giving free bike rentals to the authors and their families – or cash to use wherever it’s needed most – I am constantly overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of our island’s business owners and residents who give whatever they can to keep us going.” To donate a tax-deductible item or experience to the Nantucket Book Festival, please email Chris Vineis at cvineis@capital-partnerships.com. The Nantucket Book Festival operates under the Nantucket Book Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded to celebrate and promote the joys and rewards of reading, writing, and literacy. The organization seeks to present an annual quality program that honors national, regional, and local authors and the rich culture of the written word, ideas, and the imagination. The Nantucket Book Foundation, working together with our island educators, produces a program in the schools which includes the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program, the Nantucket Book Festival Young Writers Award, and the Visiting Authors program. These programs encourage our students to find a platform of words and a love of reading to understand that while they may live on an island, there is no limit to their imaginations. For details and the complete schedule for the 2018 Nantucket Book Festival, visit www.nantucketbookfestival.org.

boat with state of the art electronics and plenty of comfortable, accommodating amenities. topspinfishing.com Perfect pairing: DeWetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2017: This third-generation winery was the first registered in the Robertson Wine Valley of South Africa. They are internationally known as South Africa’s eminent Chardonnay house. This unwooded wine is impeccably pure with notes of grapefruit and nuts. There is length on the palate of the nutty, chalky, fruit-filled finish. Balance and sheer drinkability after a day on the water right here!
“UN-SHORE DESTINATIONS Growing up fishing on Nantucket waters, Captain Bob DeCosta has seen it all here and offers the experience needed for those who are “unshore about whether they prefer to go in-shore fishing or the long haul of a day off-shore. The choice of fish and how long a day on the water you want to spend is yours with this experienced guy. Shark and tuna fishing that require an all day commitment are as easy to handle as a bluefish, striped bass or multi-species trip. During spring and fall, he also offers cod fishing. SPORTFISHING FUN Fred Tonkin is well known on Nantucket docks. May through October, he can be found aboard the Herbert T, either on Straight Wharf or out on the ocean, sharing his love of the sea and fishing with young and old. For more than 40 years he’s plied the waters around Nantucket, and he’s introduced many to the excitement and pleasures of sportfishing. He enjoys fishing with experienced guests as well as novices—his is the ideal charter for families. He patiently teaches all ages how to catch and land blues and bass. “We make it simple,” Fred explains, “you can learn how to fish in a few minutes.” Over the years, Tonkin has come to know well the best fishing spots around Nantucket and the methods that work the best. But it’s not just novices who fish on the Herbert T — seasoned anglers also charter with Fred and fill the boat with fish for the freezer. His 2.5-hour trips are designed to target bluefish; his 5-hour trips are perfect for anglers looking to catch striped bass. There is also the opportunity to bottom fish for fluke and sea bass for a portion of your trip. Fishnantucket.net Perfect Pairing: La Mision Reserva Especial Chardonnay 2016: Hailing from a single vineyard in the Alto Maipo Valley of Chile, the clone for this vineyard came directly from the well-known William Févre in Burgundy when their joint venture began wenty years ago. A fruity nose of pineapple and pears followed by a complex, medium body that represents a fine height Chardonnay. This is a wine for the adventurer in you! Whichever fishing charter fits your fancy, be sure to be smart about being on the water. Bring your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, along with a light snack or lunch and plenty of water. A sweatshirt and light jacket may also be needed to keep you warm or as a soft pillow for the ride home. While beer and wine are welcome on most charters, hard alcohol is best left on dry land.

realize that we had become supporting characters. Up until now, we were the stars and they were our helpers. We brought him to swim to practice, we attended the concert, we picked him up at the boat; we shared knowing glances with the other parents, as well as wipes, juice boxes, and birthday invites while they raced off stage. Our dramas were the real thing: our relationships, our careers, our families had weight and matter, while they were comedic props in our lives. Time has pushed me aside. I am now the supporting actor in my son’s drama; his story happens without me. No longer Romeo, I am now a helpful friar, a bellowing father, or a dark apothecary. I drift on the stage, say my lines, advance the plot, and perhaps cause a friendly laugh, before drifting off the wings before the next kiss or swordfight. The month of May shuffles and waits for the young, the green, and the nervous. She does not wait for me. Armed with sandwiches, we crashed into the Prom with polite smiles and were welcomed as if we were children who crept downstairs during a party. Parents aren’t welcome at Prom; they are left at home with Netflix and silent phones. They smiled at us, chided us, and shooed us away. As they should. In the sober cold of a quiet house, we have been working for this moment for years. Blue’s Clues and Dora were the first steps to closing the Great Harbor Yacht Club doors to us. Playdates led them to prom and left us spurned. If all of the ridiculous pomp and expense of prom has only one lesson, it is that: parents must step away. If we have done our jobs well, then the Prom Party has no terrors for us. Prom has one more painful lesson for the young. As a parent, our singular charge is to prevent the little ones from getting hurt. This has meant baby monitors in their rooms, safety plugs in the outlets, and lots of comfy wood chips in the playgrounds. It has also meant that we have shamelessly lied to them about Santa, about the Tooth Fairy, and about the Farm Off Island where we took Rover for his retirement. After the doors close on the couples, we can’t protect them anymore. In jacket and in gown, our children walk a red carpet into this world of heartache. Between the pinning of the boutonnière and the last notes of “Fade Into You,” they have stepped out past safety into their own dangerous world. Prom is the first time I let my son enter into situation where he would be hurt or he would hurt someone else. We still keep “Boo Boo Bunny” in the freezer, but it will not help his hurt heart. To me, the final initiation to adulthood doesn’t come with a car, or a job, or a diploma. It comes when you hurt someone deliberately. You welcomed them into your heart, you warmed, then you cooled, and then, one morning over coffee, you wounded them with words and walked away. We all have done this. We all know this. It is the story we cannot tell to anyone, but it is the story that defines us. Eventually, if we are lucky, we find someone who we can’t walk away from. But every adult owns a box of tears; we built it, we filled it, and we keep it safe and secret. I have to say that we also own a box of flowers. We built it near the same time as the box of tears, and we keep it as secret. We have those moments when she called and when she stayed and when she bent down with a kiss. No matter how many tears came later, those flowers remain fresh.

change, rising sea levels, higher deer populations, and more intensive human use of surrounding coastal lands. This report will be published on the new Sandplain Grassland Network website (whrc.org/sgp), hosted by the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC). WHRC Senior Scientist Christopher Neill and The Nature Conservancy's Karen Lombard led the development of the Network, report, and website in partnership with a Coordinating Committee that includes Sarah Bois of the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, Karen Beattie and Jen Karberg of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, members from the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, the Massachusetts Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program, and The Trustees of Reservations. Because many sandplain grasslands have already been lost to forest regrowth and residential development, the report urges consideration of creating new habitat on former agricultural lands and expanding high quality existing grasslands onto adjacent woodlands. ISLAND COOKING
Memorial Day Memories by Maryjane Mojer Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm When I was growing up on Nantucket, Memorial Day was not just a sign that school was almost over (it was) or that summer was just beginning (because at 8, summer actually was, I believed, Memorial Day to Labor Day). Memorial Day was very clearly an occasion meant to be celebrated, time to be shared with friends and family. Picking lilacs to take up to the cemetery, marching with my Brownie troop, then in the High School Marching Band, then as a Majorette. This weekend was and is a turning point for the island in so many ways. Celebrating the weekend by gathering, eating, taking a breath before the season begins is a given. For my family, Memorial Day was usually the first of three or four of my Mom’s epic summer cookouts. Just inviting family would have filled the back yard on Pleasant Street. Mom went big. It was not at all unusual for one of her cookouts to have 150 guests, give or take. More often than not, there would be someone that no one knew; either a Coast Guard kid who had just arrived and had wandered into the Town Clerk’s office asking for directions, or someone who found her office before finding the Information Bureau. Mom thought nothing of handing over her car keys and loaning someone… anyone….her car for the day. “Just bring the keys back and tell me where you’ve parked it. I’ll need it back by 4:00.” For the cookouts, we would slice and dice for days. There were two refrigerators; one in the garage (Harvest Gold) and the new one in the kitchen (Avocado Green, which matched the stove and the dishwasher.) For the parties, Dad’s beer was relegated to several coolers next to a large, 10’ x 10’ staging table that was a permanent fixture in the back yard. I believe that my Dad and brother had built it as a performance stage for my brother’s band, The Fifth Shade of Blue. It never made it out of the yard, but
sure came in handy for so many things. Throughout the yard, tables of various sizes would appear. Any chair, folding or otherwise, within a 100-yard radius was commandeered. Chances were that the owners would be in attendance anyway, so it was usually a BYO-Chair event. The bar would be set up on one side of the large table: Seven & Seven, always a crowd favorite, along with Diet Coke and Rum for some, and coolers of beer. Seems to me it was always cans of Bud. How many of us still bare the scars of stepping on the haphazardly discarded tabs? I don’t recall a single party that was rained out. Not one. I also don’t recall any wine at these events, unless my Uncle Robert was in town. No cell phones, no iPod for music. In fact, except for a late night rendering of Danny Boy or How are things in Glocca Morra by the Knotty Pines crew, I don’t remember music at all. The cookouts were always planned for Saturday nights, starting at 5, though folks always started wandering in…and out….around 3. Sunday was not a rest day, however—Sunday was cleaning and dump runs. I believe that every Chief of Police in the 60s, 70s and early 80s was a guest at one time or another. Wendell Howes was a neighbor and good friend. Anthony Hopfinger and Randy Norris as well, along with the summer officers who either rented rooms or dated someone who rented a room from Mom. Her 51 Pleasant Street Rooms sign hangs in my house now. Twenty five dollars a week for room and board, and she’d do your laundry, too. As for the menu: always simple, always good, and always more than enough. There were standards, of course. Great steaming pots of corn on the cob, boiled with a splash of milk and a spoonful of sugar, left on the big continued on page 23

table next to Chinette paper plates with sticks of butter to drag your corn through after helping yourself. A huge tossed salad, Uncle Jack’s baked beans with Linquicia (Gaspars from Rebimbas’s, of course.) Triscuits and Ritz with slices of cheddar, Havarti, Jack, and Meunster…though Colby was added after my sister moved to Wisconsin. Wise potato chips and big bowls of onion dip. For meats there were always hot dogs, burgers, linquicia and blade steaks. Blade steaks, also known as Flat Iron steaks, are a really delicious, very underutilized cut. Most likely because of the big, gristly bit that runs right up the middle, but the flavor is beefy. Mom would get several, and marinate them in Good Seasons Italian Dressing in big, deep stainless pans for a few days before hand. Regardless of season, Mom would always make her Macaroni and Cheese. This is great hot or cold or room temp. The wording here is directly from Mom’s handwritten recipe. Her writing was really beautiful! 2 16 oz packages elbow macaroni, cooked following directions on box 1 and 1/2lbs Sharp Cheddar Cheese (Mom liked Vermont Cheddar best.) 2 sticks of butter 1 pint of half and half 1 can evaporated milk 1 cup milk Mix cheese, butter and milks together, heating until cheese melts Add garlic, sliced very thin, or garlic powder (either two cloves garlic or one teaspoon Garlic powder, Stir into cooked and drained macaroni.

Take 1 1/2 cups of corn flakes, put in plastic bag, seal and crush with hands or a rolling pin. Spread on top and sprinkle with paprika Bake at 400 degrees until bubbly and light brown Mmmm good! One of her most requested recipes was for her Easy Dump Cake. I’ve looked it up, but none of them are written the way she made it, so here goes! Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13” pan Pour in (Or “dump in”) 1 box of yellow cake mix…dry Pour 1 stick of butter, melted, over cake mix Top with 1 can of Blueberry Pie filling Top with 1 can of chopped pineapple, juice and all Top with 1 cup of shredded coconut Top with 1 cup of chopped walnuts Bake for 35 minutes until bubbly and brown. Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream. There are so very many changes in our world on a daily basis. Some good, some challenging. Remembering the simple joys and why we celebrate certain occasions is so very important. The reverence and importance Memorial Day gets lost in the madness at times. Here’s to remembering why we celebrate! Cheers!

the grasslands off-island, on Nantucket, our goals for sandplain grassland management fall mainly into the category of maintenance and expansion rather than creation. Nantucket was ahead of its time in creating so much open space early on. In so doing, it created some of the best and biggest examples of sandplain grassland and coastal heathland on Earth. We are lucky to be on the side of preservation and maintenance rather than restoration and reclamation seen in other areas. Interested in seeing more? Visit a sandplain grassland and heathland property and see it for yourself. The island’s south coast is the place to be for these habitats, with many Nantucket Conservation Foundation and Nantucket Land Bank properties open to the public. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation also offers weekly plant and nature walks on its heathland/grassland Eel Point property (llnf.org).

NHA Exhibits from page 3
landscapes, still lifes, and portraits tell the story of the island’s transformation into a haven for artists. The work of treasured Nantucket artists such as Anne Ramsdell Congdon, Frank Swift Chase, Isabelle Tuttle, and Edgar Whitfield Jenney, among others, will be on view at the Greater Light, once an artist studio and summer residence of the Monaghan family and currently part of the NHA’s collection of historic properties. “The NHA is pleased to partner with the Artists Association of Nantucket to present a range of works from the leading lights of the Nantucket Art Colony”, says Michael R. Harrison, Robyn and John Davis Chief Curator at NHA, “Sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan came to Nantucket in part because of the island's artistic community, and we are happy to be displaying these paintings in their house, Greater Light.“ This exhibit, which displays the artwork and illustrates the history of Nantucket’s appeal to painters and art teachers who came to Nantucket and formed the Nantucket Art Colony will be open daily all season until October 8, from 11 am to 4 pm. Greater Light is located off the beaten track in downtown Nantucket at 8 Howard Street. Admission to this exhibit is included in the NHA’s all access pass or $6 individually. The Art Colony Exhibit is this season’s second collaborative exhibit hosted NHA properties. The first to open was Celebrating Maria Mitchell, which commemorates the bicentennial of the birth of Maria Mitchell, the first female astronomer in the United States. This exhibition includes artifacts such as personal correspondence and scrapbooks, astronomical tools and documents, paintings and photographs of Mitchell, as well treasured mementos she collected throughout her life and travels. These collections give visitors an unparalleled glimpse at the background and influences that shaped Mitchell’s passion and ambition as an astronomer and as an educator. The show also highlights the rich legacy she left through her students at Vassar College and the relevance of her work today. This collaboration between NHA and Maria Mitchell Association features works and artifacts from the collections of both organizations, and can be viewed in the Nantucket Corner at the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street. Celebrating Maria Mitchell is open to visitors through December 2018 and

may be viewed during regular Whaling Museum hours. Also opening this week is Rights & Race, a new NHA exhibition in Hadwen House on upper Main Street. Nantucket has a long history of supporting socially progressive causes, thanks in large part to the island’s Quaker heritage which follows the tenets of equality, personal integrity, simplicity, community, and non-violence. During the 19th century, many Nantucketers actively worked to abolish slavery, to elevate the status of women through suffrage and equal protection under the law, and to increase educational opportunities for minorities. This exhibition explores the most pressing ethical issues of the nineteenth century and the many ways in which Nantucket’s wealthy elite, particularly the Hadwen and Barney families, participated in these movements. The exhibition also tells the story of some of Nantucket’s notable people of color and their leadership in the fight for desegregated public education. An interactive installation, New Arrivals, New Voices presents Nantucket’s long and complicated history of cultural interaction and diversity, from the native Wampanoag population and the thriving community of New Guinea to the culturally diverse, year-round population that inhabits the island today. The Hadwen House is located at 96 Main Street, and is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. In addition to these three new exhibitions, the Nantucket Historical Association is also launching a new walking tour of downtown Nantucket. The Historic House & Garden Tour will highlight the nineteenth century Hadwen House, a Greek revival home on built during the height of the whaling industry; the Thomas Macy House, a Federal-style home built in the seventeenth century; and Greater Light, an eighteenth century livestock barn that was converted to an artist studio and summer home in the 1930s. These three homes reflect the ebb and flow of people to Nantucket, representing the island’s two key historic industries, whaling and tourism, which shaped the local economy and created Nantucket as we know it today. In addition to the stories of these three homes and their gardens, the tour will also provide visitors with insight into Nantucket’s architecture, society, and domestic life through the centuries. The Historic House & Garden Tour will be offered daily at 1:30 pm through October 8 and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street.
