ISLAND MEMORIES: NANTUCKET IN 1970

A Summer of Hippies a look back with Richard Cary

Nantucket has always been home to Richard Montfort Cary. He grew up summering here in his family’s Hinckley Lane farmhouse, and his island roots go back to the 1800s. It was in 1970 that Cary moved himself, his wife Mara, and his son Donick back here to escape the theatre. He lived and worked on-island until 2004,

In these days of social distancing and staying inside, we all find ourselves missing some of the best Nantucket has to offer. No, we’re not talking about the Daffy, Wine Fest, or Figawi, or any of the fun festivals that have been taken off this season’s calendar or made virtual. We’re talking about everything the outdoors has to offer on our one-of-a-kind island. Nantucket is a paradise in so many ways, especially when the weather begins to warm. And we’re not the ones who think so. For our four legged friends, the abundance and variety of wide open spaces the island boasts is beyond compare. From beaches and bike paths to bogs and swamps, moors, forests, and fields, there’s always some place new to explore. For many of us, though, put-

Succession

Sail Endeavor

by Greyson Keller

established 1982

As the cool crops bolt, It's not business as usual. Our country is in revolt, And the harvests are insatiable. To feed our desire for equality, We must sow the seeds of change. To stand in solidarity, We must have our priorities rearranged. A garden is no different, Each plant and person must have needs met.

a Nantucket tradition.

It’s up to us to set the precedent, To be our neighbor’s advocate. There are seasons in the garden And there are seasons in the state. Let this be the spring of burden, And watch brutality asphyxiate. The root is so deep, And there is no quick antidote, We do not bleat like sheep, We create change with our vote.

Late June is a time to look to the future. As you’re collecting your last harvests of radish, lettuce, and spinach, think about what you’d like to be harvesting in late summer or early autumn. Think about what you need to do to make those goals a reality. As you harvest, you’re creating new space. That space can be used to direct sow just about anything. This is a time of change and you have the power to be a part of it. There is still enough time to sow beets or carrots, maybe a second round of arugula or lettuce. In my own garden, I just laid the seed of a few parsnips. They like to stay moist until they germinate so I’ll be out there every night, clearing my head and watering the garden. The key to harvesting for as long of a season as possible is succession planting. Succession planting is when you plant multiple plants in the same area or stagger your plantings. When one crop finishes, you pull it up and plant the next. You’ll need to know how long each plant needs to reach maturity. For instance, In the spring, you can plant carrots in your garden. After roughly 70 days, you can harvest them and plant your tomatoes. Look for a variety that will harvest in the 80 day range, that way, when they’re done cropping, you still have plenty of time to plant a final round of beets. That gives you three full harvests from one raised bed in one season. When you plant in succession, you should consider what you just planted in that area. If it was something in the brassica family, like broccoli, kale, or radish, you’ll want to change it up and plant something from a different genus, like the umbelliferae or solanaceae family. In layman terms, that means, follow your kale or cabbage with carrots or tomatoes. Crop rotation is important because it’s an organic way of fighting the good fight against pests and disease. The thought is, pests that like a certain genus of vegetable don’t have a good chance to take hold and establish themselves in the soil because you continue to change things up and move the goalposts. One pest in particular to look out for this time of year is the Tomato Hornworm. They are entirely green and actually not a worm at all. They’re a large caterpillar and as their name would suggest, they love to eat tomatoes. The truth is, they love to eat many of your prized vegetables. Potatoes, eggplants, and peppers are all in danger of being devoured by these fabled beasts. The best way to prevent much damage is to simply look, find, and dispatch them. There is a situation, however, where you won’t want to remove them. If you look closely and see white spikes protruding from their bodies, you’ll want to let those live. Those white spikes are actually wasp larvae. This sounds gross, but the wasp larvae will feed on the Hornworms’ innards and grow until eventually they emerge and kill the host. The wasp will then patrol your garden and eat any other Hornworms in sight. A good way to attract these wasps into your garden is to plant Parsley or Dill and to have a birdbath or some kind of water feature nearby. The wasps enjoy the nectar of the Parsley and Dill while also enjoying a little downtime, with their feet up, relaxing in the birdbath, digesting Tomato Hornworm. This is just the kind of murder wasp a garden needs. Now that we’ve all decided to plant in succession, let’s put together a plan. As I noted above, I just planted a couple of parsnips. They are following the arugula which was abundant this spring. The variety of parsnip I just planted needs 120 days to maturity. In that space, I’ll only get two harvests this season. continued on page 14

Centuries of Silence by Robert P. Barsanti

Two years ago, Someone spray painted racist graffiti on on the front of the African Meeting House on Nantucket. Two years later, that Someone is out there drinking coffee and waving at the cops when they drive by. The police department “will vigorously pursue the perpetuators of this hate crime,” which, I suppose, they are still doing. Someone spray-painted a “N’s go home message” and then signed it with a cartoon penis. Then Someone had a beer and blunt with their friends and took pictures of it. Those friends told other friends when the sun and the outrage rose in the morning. Someone’s parents probably did the math and figured out when Someone wasn’t home. They may even have seen the pictures. In the cold light of a March morning, words were said, phones were erased, and the silence descended like the fog. We hid Someone in our hearts and mouths. So it continues to this day. The Police Department goes on to say that “Crimes like this are not what Nantucket is all about.” On one hand, that statement is clearly true. Very rarely does the racism on island get broadcast as clearly and loudly as it was on the front door of the African Meeting House. On the other hand, this island is all about the silence. We have kept quiet about heroin, about suicide, about abuse, and about a host of others. Silence is our strength. Small, tight knit communities like Nantucket exist because of that silence. We go along to get along, and, if it means conflict, we ignore it. We let crimes slide because it would be inconvenient to acknowledge them. Football players were called monkeys and apes. Ugly words said over beers. Names chanted at retreating buses. We know about these things, and we have not acted. Just as we know who did the graffiti. We have heard. We aren’t saying. This silence rises from understandable fears. We live on an island that requires hot financial yoga as rent. So, if you are bartending at a summer restaurant that never has African American waiters, you aren’t going to go out of your way to point that out. If you are working on a crew that sends the “monkeys” up to the roof, you are going to take your paycheck and smile politely. If the homeowner says that she doesn’t want black people cleaning her house, you are going to rearrange your cleaning crews instead of giving up her money. If your mortgage depends on your silence, no words will be said. The racism has been built into the brick sidewalks and cedar shingles. The lines of segregation remain clear, even though the tide of wealth has washed out the walls. New Guinea, the section of town where the African Meeting House stands, wasn’t called that for nothing. Downhill from the Three Bricks and Hadwen House, the island ghetto grew. Thanks to the trickle-down wealth of whaling, that land got developed by the POC mates and sailors of the ships that white Nantucketers owned. But they didn’t go to school together, didn’t worship together, didn’t marry each other. And they didn’t die together. People of color weren’t buried at Prospect Hill with the white folks. They were buried with the dead horses, out beyond Mill Hill in the Colored Cemetery. It’s all right there. You just have to look. Unseen and unheard, the Unimportant People of Nantucket did the actual work of wealth building. They went out on the whaleboats with oars and harpoons while continued on page 15

Giving Us Roots

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Nantucket is often thought of as a virtually tree-less landscape. Picturing the conservation lands and open space, we often think of rolling grasslands and the open moors. But take a look closer. A majority of the plants surrounding us on island – whether it be along the open fields of the south coast, the northeast swamps, or the rolling hills of the northwest of Nantucket – are, in fact, made up of woody vegetation: trees, shrubs, and lianas (woody vines). Of course, like many things on Nantucket, the shrubs and trees on our island might look a little different than their mainland counterparts. Some trees look more like shrubs (black cherry and sassafras, for example) and some trail along the ground looking more like “wildflowers (like mayflower or false heather). You might not immediately know what a liana is, but you know them individually: poison ivy, fox grape, Virginia creeper, and green briar, to name a few. In her new set of books: Trees, Shrubs, and Lianas of Nantucket (Volumes 1 and 2), Lama Yeshe Palmo lovingly details every aspect of these woody plants. A life-long naturalist educator, these books represent a lifetime of learning about the natural world, making observations of the plants, and collecting their stories. More than a field guide to the woody plants of Nantucket, these books are a loving portrait of each species. Multiple pages are dedicated to each plant, so that nothing is left out and several photos illustrate each distinguishing feature in all seasons. For example, Arrowwood (Viburnum dentatum) begins with the typical field guide info: plant family, habitat, leaf type, etc. But then Yeshe Palmo goes on to describe how to identify the species in all seasons, the life cycle, looka-like species, uses for the plant (and what parts NOT to use), threats to the species, and where to find them on Nantucket. All this with no fewer than 27 photos to aid in the description! continued on page 16

Summer Solstice Sips by Jenny Benzie, Advanced Sommelier of Épernay

The past few months have been interesting, to say the least. To start, the weather in March was incredible here on Nantucket. Then, April was the pits (including more than the just the weather). May rolled around where we usually see an influx of people at the start of the season; however, that did not quite transpire this year. Fast forward to today, and summertime is so close you can taste it! It is definitely time to enjoy a splash of summer in your glass.

STYLISH SENSATION While some may say that beauty is only skin deep, it is hard to deny that what is inside the wine bottle can also seduce you to take another sip, enjoying its inner qualities of charm and grace. The beauty of Chateau de Berne Ultimate Provence Rose extends from the bottle to the contents. This is a powerful blend of traditional Provence combined with modern style, all wrapped up in one. You will enjoy layers of raspberries and strawberry jam on the nose, followed by a silky, spicy palate. The wine is fresh with moderate plus acidity that is perfect for your afternoon soirée. The contemporary, luminous bottle is inspired by the vineyard lights and bright spirit within that never disappoints. Consider it the ultimate wine for any social (distancing) occasion this summer.

INCOMPARABLE ICON

Follow the stars and you will discover great things. When Marcel Ott wanted to start his own winery in Provence, many moons ago, it was tradition in the region that the winery was named after the property where the grapes were grown, not the name of the family who was the magic behind it all. In order to make his way around this hurdle and make his wines stand out from the crowd, he did several things. He named his brand Domaines Ott*—the addition of a star* allowed him to use his name in a modified way. He also created an exclusive, unique, and instantly recognizable bottle that still sets this wine apart to this day from others. The signature curvy bottle of the Domaines Ott* estate wines has been the inspiration for many producers of the region to follow suit on his ingenious coattails. Domaines Ott* “Chateau de Romassan” Bandol Rose… is Mourvedre based, as are most wines from the Bandol region of Provence, providing structure and the capacity for ageing – even for a rose wine! The texture of Grenache, the softness of Cinsault, and the fruity roundness of Syrah are all added smaller quantities. The vines are an average age of 25 years and grown right next to the Mediterranean Sea. You can just imagine them basking in the warm sunshine all summer long, waiting to be harvested at just the right moment in the fall.

POOLSIDE PINK Sometimes you just want a pink wine that is cheap and cheerful for that afternoon plunge, into the pool that is. L’Ostal Cazes Rose is the perfect choice. This wine is made from a blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah. The beautiful pale pink color comes from the grapes being pressed immediately at low temperatures so that little color is extracted. The delicate nose of the wine is subtle combination of rose petals and pomegranate. On the palate, the wine is fresh and light with a touch of pleasant acidity. continued on page 17

A Summer of Hippies from page 3

was going to retire to Nantucket and be a carpenter, raise a family, and let the Mainland sink… I’d always known I’d come home to Nantucket eventually.” It was March 1970 when they moved back to the old Hinckley farmhouse. “We slept in the living room by the fireplace. Donick was just a year-and-a-half old. Elmore Taylor was building a house down the land, so I got my first job with him. What a great crew: Erik Erikson, Dick Caton, Peter Haigh, Leon Lancaster, Mitch Blake, Dennis Dreher, Bruce Killen, Nils van Vorst, Albert Dole… I know I’ve left out so many not to be forgotten…Here I am, 78 this summer, and I’m still walking around like I was a hippie on Nantucket.” Richard remembers 1970 as a summer of hippies: “we were the hippies in 1970 who came to change the Republican island… Nantucket was very conservative then… Us guys with long hair and beards and babies in tow. Carl Borchert was the king hippie [Richard chuckles] 6-foot-five with a full beard and mane…” On November 5 of 1970, the Town of Nantucket enacted “anti-hippie” bylaws at a special Town Meeting that prohibited hitchhiking and sleeping in the open. That summer on Nantucket “was heavenly: going to work in the early morning with the light and the dew and the rabbits and the seagulls. It was peaceful…a wonderful, friendly place with a good social mix. Granger Frost was out on Madaket Road, across from the Franklin Fountain. He would host very sophicated parties. Mac Dixon brought in the erudite crowd.” As Richard recalls, in 1970 “everything was on

Main Street — it was the heart of Nantucket… the A&P, the Bosun’s Locker… There was awe in living on the island then: when you went downtown, you were going back in time 100 years. There was community, and it meant a lot to be part of that community… it was important to be a Nantucketer despite knowing that you’ll never be a native.” Nantucket in 1970 "was romantic and absolutely beautiful, with a lot of heart." Cary sent several poems he wrote during his time here in 1970 to share with our readers. We are reprinting one here: you can read more of his Nantucket poems online at YesterdaysIsland.com - Suzanne Daub

ting off exercise is all too easy. Fortunately for me, my dogs never let it last too long. Their love for exploring on their feet is contagious; it never fails to get me up and out and moving. Since I know I’m not the only one, let’s lace up our shoes and grab that leash, because it’s time for a walk (sorry, W-A-L-K). Our favorite place to unwind and explore is one of the best-known walks on the island: Sanford Farm. This 780acre stretch of land was originally part of approximately 20,000 acres set aside for use as “common land” by Nantucket’s first shareholders in 1659. The land was used for nearly 200 years for farming, grazing animals, and wood harvesting. Today, the park’s popularity comes from its easy accessibility, ample parking, and varying degrees distance and difficulty. Plus, there’s a poop bag dispenser and a trash can for proper disposal. To get there, simply hop on Madaket Road heading away from town. A short ways after number 114 Madaket Road, look for a large parking lot on your left. Take a spin through the wooden turnstile and let your adventure begin. The terrain is mostly flat with a few rolling hills; the wide dirt roads and grassy paths are easy to share with other walkers. There’s not a lot of shade when the sun is shining, so consider bringing some water and be sure to use sun block. Like most places on the island, ticks can be a problem, so protect both you and your animals from biting bugs. Since you’ll likely see some other people enjoying the outdoors, bring a mask if social distancing becomes difficult. The shortest walk, known as the Northern Loop, is just shy of two miles from the parking lot and back. About dou-

ble that distance is the Barn Walk which takes walkers halfway to the ocean. This slight elevation provides spectacular vistas of the ocean, and instead of other people you might catch sight of a dashing deer or osprey on high. Walking beyond the barn will bring you to the end of the path and

I still want to elongate my growing season though. So I took matters into my own hands. In my garden, there is a plot of opportunity. We recently took a trip to the dump and unloaded an old, unloved grill. It had been occupying the gardener’s equivalent of 57th Street in New York. It is a south facing wall with plenty of drainage and fertile soil. It sits in line with a row of lavender, divided by my large terra cotta pots filled with several different varieties of tomatoes and basil. It has a very Italian Mediterranean feel that I enjoy. As much as I want to load it with more sun worshippers, I know that to prolong my growing season, I should utilize another tried and true method of extending the season. I’ll build a cold frame. A cold frame is a little framed box with no bottom and a lid made of glass. Essentially a mini greenhouse. In August, I can sow some more cold weather crops and harvest right into December. I could also simply put my herb pots inside and have a much greater chance of getting them to survive winter successfully. The year 2020 has delivered many challenges. Everything from the Japanese Murder Wasps to the pandemic and protests. There is a shift. Not only in congress and country, but in the fabric of our fields. Our cool crops wain and our spring begins to yield. Tomatoes seem to double in size and the zucchini is about to bloom. Pole beans are on the trellis and the herbs are on our spoon. During these next few weeks, it is important to stay on top of the little things. All the small steps taken today, can lead to a greater harvest tomorrow. Making sure to train new growth, remove side shoots on your tomatoes, watch for pests and watch the weather. Continue to weed and reduce root competition. The object is to be in the garden so you can mitigate any issue that may arise. Being in the garden will also help you clear your thoughts and focus. I like to think that there is no better therapy than weeding your beds. Once you’ve spent an hour outside, in the sun and salt, you’ll feel refreshed and mentally ready for whatever lies on the road ahead.

the owners remained on-island. They farmed, they fished, they carried bricks up the ladders to build the lovely Federal homes. And they probably heard the same slurs, were kept out of the same rooms, and were shoved with the same prejudices. I doubt that this is the first time that the African Meeting House has had those words painted on it. Escaped slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass began his speaking career at the Nantucket Atheneum. And the next year, he was chased from pulpit to pulpit until he wound up in the big shop outside of town. Later, in another town where he was fundraising, he addressed the Ladies Anti-Slavery Society and asked those lovely women, wearing cotton dresses in a room lit by spermaceti, to listen through the silence. He asked them to consider “what, to a slave, is the fourth of July?” To a slave, the Fourth of July did not invoke freedom from tyranny, it did not celebrate the virtues of “all men created equal” and it did not even bring a day off. The Fourth of July says what the quiet part aloud; “reveals …, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.” Looking at slavery, Douglass claimed that we no longer needed quiet discussion and polite letters, “but fire. It is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake...” The silence of Nantucket has followed down the centuries. We have allowed any manner of sorrow to grow in the corners and edges of the town in order to keep peace, make money, and exercise mercy to the Important Ones. The Important Ones have the money. The Important Ones have the power. The Important Ones stay on the ground and watch the shingles get nailed to the roof. They stand, fold their arms, and say nothing. In the silence, they tell how it was, and how time came along, and how it happened again and again. Silence falls. Across the Sound, the march of masked millions beat a new tempo. Statues are pulled down, politicians run, and a deep cry calls for justice, not mercy. We, the people, the Unimportant People of Nantucket are standing, speaking, and ripping the silence apart. It’s time to listen. It’s time to speak.

Yeske Palmo’s books describe 89 common woody plants on Nantucket. Volume 1 is dedicated to trees and lianas while Volume 2 describes shrubs and berries. She covers natives as well as non-natives in equal measure. While the species covered are common on Nantucket, many are widespread throughout the northeastern US, so these volumes have broad appeal. In putting pen to paper and creating these volumes, Yeshe Palmo said she wanted to “get the stories of the plants out for people to get to know and appreciate them.” In doing so, she hopes that knowing the plants will help people understand and feel connected to the landscape around them. One of my favorite parts of these books is the inclusion of seasonality. Most field guides offer one line drawing or photo of an individual species at its peak flowering, possibly offering a fruit photo or some other distinguishing feature. These volumes portray each species throughout the season. Thus, the reader can get to know each plant throughout the year: bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, seeds, and color changes. Whether you travel a trail in February, April, July, or October, you can find a description for each. The gorgeous photographs illustrate Yeshe Palmo’s descriptions. This is truly a labor of love as she is the author as well as the photographer. Photos include habitat, leaves, flowers, bark, thorns, and anything necessary to identify and appreciate the plant. Always carrying her camera on daily walks, she has been taking photos for years to capture just the right representation of each character. And all of this work pays off. In the pages on bayberry (Morella caroliniensis), for example, there are close-up photos of the bayberry wax surrounding each fruit with descriptions of why the plant produces the wax (to protect the fruit from dehydrating, thus protecting the embryonic seed) as well as a recipe for using the bayberry wax for candles, past and current medicinal uses for bayberry, and natural history information about bayberry’s importance as a food source for migratory birds. continued on page 18

The name of the winery, “l’ostal,” means both “house” and “family group’ in the ancient Occitan language of the region where the winery is located in the Minervois area. The grapes hail from the Pays d’Oc IGP (indication geographique protegee) region, meaning the grapes are grown along the southern coast in France. The winery is owned and operated by the well-esteemed Cazes family of Bordeaux, as they were looking for a property to satisfy their needs for value wines at an affordable price for everyone to enjoy.

SOPHISTICATED SIP Every day of life should be celebrated, and why not start with right now? Fortunately, you do not need a special occasion in order to enjoy a fantastic glass of rosé bubbly. The beautiful salmon-pink color and full, aromatic richness of Chapagne Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rose NV is achieved by using 100% Pinot Noir in this effervescent bubbly. Aromas of ripe red fruits invite you to take a sip of this fresh, lively sparkling wine. The palate offers a sensation of plunging into a basket of freshly picked red berries, with a supple, well-rounded finish. The bottle itself is an invitation to self-indulgence and enjoying life’s finer moments. Its’ shape was inspired by the bottles manufactured in the time of King Henry IV, adding the seal-like monogrammed ‘LP’ shield. This extremely elegant presentation is reminiscent of the delicate wine found inside, just waiting to be released from the bottle. The extreme versatility of this bubbly makes it a perfect pairing for a myriad of cuisines – fresh grilled catch of the day, Asian inspired dishes, or a platter of fresh berries with sliced prosciutto and hard cheese. You can see for yourself there is a rose lining to every story. Let this be the summer you take a step back to enjoy the variations on a theme that our island has to offer you at the moment. It just might be your best summer on Nantucket.

Giving Us Roots from page 16

For each species she goes over the buds, the leaves, flowers, fruit, bark in each season, male and female plants…and it’s still not enough! She covers what to look for and where to find them – how to read the landscape. And that is what Yeshe Palmo succeeds at: helping readers interpret the landscape. Once we know the stories of the plants around us – the trials, the struggles, how they came to be where they are – Yeshe Palmo is “giving us roots in our own landscape.” And this is the beauty of Yeshe Palmo’s volumes. The photos, the descriptions, all lovingly rendered to make the plants more accessible. She is a natural educator and this comes through in her writing and descriptions. She loves these plants and this landscape and wants to share them with her readers. Non-native invasive species, such as Japanese barberry and Scotch broom are treated equally in these volumes. They are labeled as non-native and their introduction histories described. However, Yeshe Palmo treats them as another piece of the landscape puzzle – not to be vilified. They just are. When I asked Yeshe Palmo if she had a favorite species in the book (I realize that was an unfair question) she said, “Well it would have to be kinnikkninnick. It’s such a friendly plant. It’s circumpolar so you can find it all around the world.” Known on island as bearberry or mealy plum, kinnikkinnick refers to Artostaphylos uva-ursi, one of the most ubiquitous plants on Nantucket. This low, creeping woody evergreen plant defines the heathland ecosystem on Nantucket and is found in the heath and acidic barrens throughout the northern hemisphere. I hadn’t thought about it being a friendly plant myself, but I knew exactly what Yeshe Palmo meant. In 2012, when I moved to Oregon to work as the Director of Conservation Research at the Institute for Applied Ecology, I had to learn a whole new flora on the west coast. It was with great joy that I found a decent sized patch of bearberry on a

June 18-July 1, 2020

botanizing trip to West Sand Island. When the other botanists told me it was kinnikkinnick, I responded “Whatever name you call it, I know this plant!” It was like seeing an old friend. Lama Yeshe Palmo is a Teacher of Tibetan Buddhism who came to Nantucket in 2011 by way of upstate New York. When she isn’t found out in nature, Yeshe Palmo is on the front lines for our Nantucket community. As the current manager of the Nantucket Food Pantry, she makes sure there is food for those in our community. She said that since COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, the need on-island has tripled. The Food Pantry has been running on emergency mode for two months, feeding 380 households (around 1400 people) every week. Just as she describes the lesser known plants of Nantucket, Yeshe Palmo knows and cares for the lesser seen parts of the Nantucket community. When I asked why she focused on the woody species of Nantucket, Yeshe Palmo laughed, almost to herself. “This one was supposed to be the easy book!” With fewer shrubs, trees, and woody vines, a volume of the forbs and grass-like species were to follow. As she told me, the collecting of information, taking the photos; that was the fun part. It’s the publishing that is the burdensome part. While there are no current plans to publish more, I am hopeful that future volumes will follow. These books are for any and everyone. From experienced naturalists who will learn something new about Nantucket flora to amateur plant enthusiasts eager to discover more about the world around them or just the plants in their backyard. When I spoke with Lama Yeshe Palmo she was at the Nantucket Island’s Land Bank property, Gardner Farm, walking her dog. She described the scene around her - a Japanese Black Pine stand – dead individuals in the center, the young on the edges, and the pollen cones beginning to elongate. She could see the ecological succession in action. The smaller shrubs, little bluestem grasses at the edge mixing with the sedges and forbs. “The landscape is waiting to be read.” To purchase your copy of the Trees, Shrubs, and Lianas of Nantucket, stop by Mitchell’s Book Corner on Main Street or Nantucket Bookworks on Broad Street.

Leave only footprints... Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

On some pieces, pearls are interspersed with turquoise, on others, the Ying and Yang of black and white is featured, or sapphire and diamond bling may be chosen to set off the soft reflection of the pearl’s whiteness. Look for Pam’s signature, a small red bead that identifies the piece as hers. NANTUCKET PEARL COMPANY jewelry is available online at nantucketpearls.com

June 18-July 1, 2020

Dining Out during the Pandemic During the pandemic, Nantucket eateries are taking precautions to protect their guests while they find new ways to serve them their favorite meals. Eateries who have always offered takeout are now doing curbside and home delivery. Fine dining restaurants are offering to-go menus and hoping to offer outdoor dining once the situation changes. There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! At our press time on June 2, Massachusetts is scheduled to enter Phase Two of reopening on June 8. This means that some restrictions on restaurants will begin to ease, and several island eateries will start offering outdoor table service in addition to takeout. Under current guidance, tables will be 6-feet apart, groups are limited to six people, and seating at bars will be prohibited. Statewide face covering orders will remain in effect until otherwise noted, requiring workers to wear face covering at all times; customers may remove face covering when dining.

Around Town You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most in-town streets. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.

The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.

The Nantucket Whaling Museum 13 Broad Street has benches placed in front of the museum

Children's Beach Park Harbor View Way is a short stroll from downtown. There are benches and a grassy area, along with a small stretch of beach. Limited parking is available.

Sculpture Pocket Park There is a “pocket park” on India Street between Federal & Centre sts that is adorned with sculptures. Benches on the bricked area provide seating.

Town Pier Park Walk down Washington Street, past the Handlebar Cafe (which also has a few benches for customers) and go beyond Brant Point Marine. Here you’ll find benches and a path to the water. Parking across the street in the town lot.

Fair Street Park At the corner of Main & Fair sts. This park is in the heart of town, so it has no parking of its own, but there are usually parking spots nearby. It has benches & stone seating around fountain and is beautifully adorned with fresh plants.

“Arthur’s Park” portion of the Land Bank's Consue Springs Property On the edge of town beyond Consue Springs. It is a bit of a walk from Main Street. There is one picnic table and grassy area. No parking is available.

Pocket Park at Francis & Union This small grassy area with two benches is about a half-mile or so walk from downtown Nantucket. It’s a lovely place to sit with some views of the water, but is not on the water. There is no parking.

Old South Road Park Near the Airport Owned by the Town of Nantucket, this spacious grassy space dotted with young trees and sculpture is ideal for children who need to run (but keep them away from the busy streets! There is a paved pathway and several benches. No parking is available here, but it is next to an NRTA bus stop.
