AAN Invites Public to Submit Artwork The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is inviting the public to submit their artwork, including cell phone photos, for its annual Artists Open Exhibition, which will be on display beginning May 29 through June 8 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. “While the bulk of our exhibitions are only for our AAN members,” said AAN curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier, “this exhibition is open to all artists. We invite them to participate in our gallery at a professional level during our 70th anniversary year.” “It is at the heart of our mission to foster emerging island artists, and we look forward to meeting some of the up-and-coming artists in the community,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. For the fifth consecutive year, AAN is pleased to invite cell phone photographers to submit work for the show. “This popular show-within-a-show was the brainchild of photographer and AAN artist member Russell Wieland, who believes that smart phone cameras are changing the landscape of photography,” said Frazier. Wieland will again curate this year’s display. The AAN will be accepting loose unframed photographs for sale, maximum of three submissions, no larger than eight-by-ten inches in size. Participants may drop off up to two regular submissions for the exhibition, and/or three cellography works on Tuesday, May 26 at AAN’s 19 Washington St. gallery, between 10 am and 6 pm. Art must be professionally presented, and pieces may be juried for space. Photographers who wish to be in the regular exhibition as well as the Cellography show can submit the maximum in both categories.

Remembering Who Earned This by Robert P. Barsanti This year, Boxed Water is the new thing. On Sunday morning, the beautiful ones drifted down to the ferries wearing Vineyard Vines, loafers, sunglasses, and carrying white and black boxes of Boxed Water. They swirled it, sipped it, set it back on the tables, and rested their aching heads against the still and peaceful walls. Every year, some great capitalist dream comes flapping out of the high priced minds of the New England colleges and prep schools, then flies across the sound and lands on Nantucket with the flutter of investment and cash. Maple Water came to the island last year in a similar way, as did Grapefruit Soda, and a thousand other ideas looking to become the next Nantucket Nectar or Cisco Beer. For all I know, Boxed Water will become the next big thing. My record in predicting the winners and the losers in the marketplace is decidedly spotty. I didn’t think people would buy bottles of lemonade either. And I still wear bowties and carrying dimes in case I need to use a pay phone. My sense of these things is decidedly backward. The beginning of the season, Memorial Day, brings all of these new plans out into the light. The Downyflake tries out tasty Lemon and Coconut donuts, hoping to somehow grab even more of the donut marketplace. Something Natural elbows Nantucket Nectars out of some shelf space for the (excellent) Matt Fee Tea and three other juices and teas. The Juice Bar has created a new geometry for doling out ice cream to people who don’t know how to wait in line civilly. We all start anew at the end of May with free samples and open registers. No business has re-jiggered itself for summer more than the Stop-andShop. They have a Coffee Bar! They have Seating! They have twelve deli continued on page 47

Strange Visitors by Dr. Sarah D. Oktay Director, University of Massachusetts Nantucket Field Station (see yesterdaysisland.com for expanded article, website links, & notations)
Two photos accompany this article and they may look like an elaborate gimmick or hoax but they are photos taken by Tyler Bradbury and Mike Strazzula of a giant oar fish that washed up on Nantucket on May 4. Bradbury and Strazula were in Madaket enjoying the sunset on a warm spring evening when they saw this giant white thing flapping in the surf. What they were looking at was a rare oarfish (Regalecus glesne Ascanius), the longest bony fish in the ocean. Also known as King of the Herrings, oarfish have ribbon-like bodies that can grow up to 50 feet in length. The fish is found worldwide, but is most common in cooler waters at latitudes greater than 15° and in the Eastern Atlantic PHOTO COURTESY MARIA MITCHELL ASSOCIATION Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It normally ranges as deep in the ocean as 3000 feet but they occasionally venture into shallower waters, especially after storms. Its scaleless body is covered with a silver to silvery-blue skin and is topped with an ornate, red dorsal fin that resembles a decorative headdress. This dorsal fin continued on page 12

Unsung Heroes of the Civil War by Frances Ruley Karttunen Nantucket’s Main Street exists in three distinct segments. The wide part from the head of Straight Wharf uphill between storefronts is known as Main Street Square. The square resulted from widening the street after the Great Fire of 1846. At the foot of the Square is the old brick customs house. The Pacific Club has relinquished its meeting room on the ground floor to a crafts gallery, but the ghost of the days when aging whaling captains, veterans of voyages to the Pacific whaling grounds, played endless rounds of cribbage there lingers on. At the head of the square is the red brick Pacific National Bank, built in 1818. From a makeshift observatory on its flat roof, Nantucket’s premier scientist, Maria Mitchell, observed a comet, the discovery of which launched her off-island career. Beyond the bank building, Main Street narrows. Like the square, it is paved with cobblestones that were purchased from Gloucester for that purpose in 1837 (not, after all, brought to the island as ballast in the holds of empty ships, as we used to imagine). The cobbled street passes between handsome houses, including the famous Three Bricks constructed for the three sons of Joseph Starbuck and the two neoclassical columned mansions across the street. This section of Main Street could be said to reek of whale oil wealth accumulated in the first half of the 1800s. The cobblestones end at an obelisk, beyond which the cobbles give way to yellow brick leading to the edge of town. Where the obelisk stands was once the town center, located at a distance from the stench of the whaling-era waterfront. Here the town building once stood with the town’s liberty pole out front. Within was a courtroom, and continued on page 14

Wine & Sports: A Double Header by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Every year has a new season, as they say in baseball, and the same can be found true for every vineyard and wine region in the world. You might wonder how to demystify wine and bring it down to this type of every day level that we see in the wide world of sports. This seems like an easy question to answer — read a little bit about wine each day. Here is how simple this can be. For most sports fans, every morning they check the sports section of the paper or go online to see who won the game last night. They check the stats of their favorite players, see who was traded and anticipate when the next game is scheduled. Who had the most points and was the highest scorer? Which was the best of show? These are just a few of the questions that you may ask yourself about sports. And these same questions can be asked about wine. Browsing through a wine magazine and familiarizing yourself with a few wine critics will guide you to learn more about wine in general and the style of wine that you like drink. New teams form, uniforms may change, players might switch to a different team. This is all similar to the wine world where new wineries begin in new areas, labels may be modified, and a winemaker may work for a new winery. What about athletes that use steroids? They use them to enhance their performance. Wine can also be manipulated so that it is bigger, contains more alcohol, and is rich with texture. By watching a quick five-minute wine spot on the internet every evening as you unwind with a glass of wine after work, you can learn a little something each day. Eventually, you know who the big players are, where they came from, what school they attended, who their teammates are, when were they drafted, if they ever been traded, and more. You follow your favorite professional athlete; now you can start to follow your favorite wine professional. Sometimes they fumble, other times they score a homerun. And as the fan, you want to learn more about your favorite “team” to impress your friends with trivia at the wine bar late at night! Wine is something that is attainable for everyone. Whether you are on a budget and choose the cheap seats at the game, decide to sit along the baseline to see the wine being made, or you have season tickets and entertain in your sports box at every home game, you decide how you get your money’s worth out of the wine experience. Switching from wooden bats to aluminum? How dare they mess with the tradition of replacing corks with Stelvin screw closures! Are half bottles considered minor leagues and magnums the World Series? (Did you ever notice how they all celebrate with champagne at the end anyway?!?) I think you get the picture, just take it one day at a time. Eventually, before you know it, you will be the one who knows all about the different vintages, which company bought out which team and who are the rising stars that make it all happen for us.

ISLAND COOKING
May 21 - 27, 2015
breakfast,
A Weekend to Remember by Leah Mojer Decorating soldiers' graves with flowers is an ancient custom. The first Memorial Day observance went by another name: Decoration Day. In the south, people would gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives, neighborsm and friends. There was often a religious service and a picnic-like “dinner on the ground,” in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that “potluck” meals were started as part of the first Decoration days, and would later become a tradition synonymous with Memorial Day cookouts, beach barbecues, and celebrating what most embrace as the official beginning of summer. This year, let’s roll out the blankets, light the grills, and celebrate our brave, fallen heros by enjoying shared dishes, friends and family. Cheers!

COSKATA-COATUE WILDLIFE REFUGE AND GREAT POINT Natural Discovery Tours
by Amy Jenness author of On This Day in Nantucket History In May of 1942, the German Navy sent 8 submarines to prowl Atlantic waters and destroy ships belonging to their enemies. The grouping, one of the Germans’ famous “wolf packs,” was called Pfadfinder and the impact of that mission brought World War II far too close to Nantucket for comfort. On May 17, the British merchant ship SS Peisander was traveling 350 miles southeast of Nantucket when the German U-653 torpedoed it. Sinking and stranded in a dense fog on Nantucket Shoals, the SS Peisander called the US Coast Guard for assistance. When the crew of the cutter General Greene arrived they first saw a lifeboat with the survivors and then noticed a U Boat crash diving in front of their bow. The cutter tried to ram the submarine, but it slipped beneath the surface. After tracking the Germans with sonar, the General Greene dropped three depth charges, which produced a 400 foot oil slick. The cutter lost contact at that point and returned to rescue the 18 survivors, who were brought to Newport, RI. While it may have been damaged, the U-653, which would be at sea a total of 73 days, was still operable and continued south with the wolf pack. The U-653 would continue to sink enemy ships for the Germans until a British carrier destroyed it in March of 1944. On May 25, the Dutch merchant vessel Polyphemus discovered a life boat drifting north of Bermuda and rescued 14 men who had been driven from their ship Norland, a Norweigian tanker with a cargo of ballast, five days earlier when the sole German U-108, which was not part of a wolf pack, torpedoed and sank it. Two days later all but 15 people onboard the Polyphemus would escape to that vessel’s life boats when the German submarine U-578, traveling in the wolf pack Pfadfinder, sank their ship. continued on page 23

They swim vertically, heads up, with their bodies stiff and undulating only the dorsal fin. Large adults have been known to kill themselves by swimming onto beaches. They normally stay in very deep water and rarely venture near shore. Little is known about the reproductive habits of the oarfish, although they have been observed spawning off the coast of Mexico between July and December. As someone who very often finds herself making her own fashion accessories, the idea behind Jan Jaeger’s new bead store, Akimbo, really intrigued me. Jan was inspired to open the shop after traveling with some creative friends to New York City and visiting with bead wholesalers. The wide variety of dazzling colors, shapes, and sizes of the gemstones sparked her interest, so she bought some of the beads and took the time to learn about the craft. She was soon turning out pieces of her own beaded jewelry, and the process of bead selection and jewelry creation became an exciting hobby. When the small space next to Geronimo’s (Jan’s pet store) became available, she jumped at the opportunity to share her passion with Nantucket. Akimbo has everything you need to create a beautiful piece of your own signature jewelry! Trays of gemstones, glass, ceramic, metal, and pearl beads line the shelves and the walls are adorned with stringing material, earring wires, toggles, clasps, chains, and tools. There are sample pieces throughout the store to gather inspiration from, or browse through some of the beading instruction books they have available. You can purchase things to take home to work on in your own time, or you can sit down at their work table and create your jewelry right in the store. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable in the art of beading and can help guide you through the process if you wish. The piece of jewelry that you create will be extra special...to have a pair of earrings, necklace, or bracelet that you chose the beads for and made with your own hands! Jan and her staff are working on a schedule of jewelry making classes for this summer, so check in with them soon. I think this will also make a great inexpensive rainy day activity with the kids or a fun start to a girls night out. Akimbo is located at 119B Pleasant Street, next to Geronimo’s and is open from 10am to 5:30pm, closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

nearby stood the whipping post where punishment was meted out to wretched miscreants. A jail built in 1803 (quaintly known as the Old Gaol) still occupies a back yard between Upper Main Street and Vestal Street. Not far away there were an almshouse and a Quaker home for the aged. A large Quaker Meeting House also stood nearby. By the 1870s, Quakerism and the whaling industry had both collapsed on Nantucket; a brick building on Union Street, just off Main Street Square, had been taken over to serve as the Town Building; and the whipping post and the liberty pole had long since faded from memory. The intersection of Main Street with Gardner and Milk Streets was no longer a hub of activity, but like the Pacific Club, it retained an aura of by-gone importance. Where better to place Nantucket’s Civil War monument? Work commenced in October 1874. One of the millstones from the recently demolished Roundtop Mill was recycled as the base for the obelisk on which were inscribed the names of Nantucket’s Union dead, seventy-three in all. On May 29, 1875, Nantucket’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was dedicated. The American Civil War had been the first in which the Nantucket community had participated. Previously, Quaker pacifism had kept Nantucketers out of combat, but to the Civil War the island sent three hundred thirty-nine of her sons, fifty-six over the town’s quota. Of those who went to war, only the names of the men who died appear on the Monument. Robert Mooney, local Civil War historian, has recounted many a story of both the island’s Civil War dead and those who returned home after the war, but there are some veterans of that war whose stories have yet to be told. A total of twenty African Americans enlisted identifying Nantucket as their hometown. Most served in the Union Navy, but three joined the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry. All survived the war, so none of their names appear on the monument. In October 1891 veterans Sampson Pompey and Hiram Reed were elected charter members of the Nantucket Post of the Grand Army

Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor'easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history.
The book is available for sale at Mitchell's Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gi Shop.
the ocean surface until hatching. Once hatched, the tiny larvae feed mainly on plankton until they mature. Adult oarfish are thought to live solitary lives. Big kudos go to Mike Strazzula, Tyler Bradbury, and Chris Kinch who shared this discovery and returned the oarfish safely to the ocean. They also quickly alerted the Maria Mitchell Association and, through the magic of Facebook, the image made the rounds of the island so that all of us could be on the lookout for it. If you find an oarfish alive, please get it back to the water. If found on the beach dead, the Maria Mitchell Association asks you to call 508-228-9198 or bring it to the Maria Mitchell Association on 4 Vestal Street so that it can be studied and recorded. This reminds me of the two torpedo rays that washed up on Nantucket many years ago. We have had a couple more sighting of torpedo rays but these deep water creatures, like the oarfish, typically would only come near shore if in distress. If that wasn’t enough excitement for the month, apparently some white beluga whales got wind of a gathering around Nantucket and decided to make a very rare appearance in our local waters. About two weeks ago on May 4, Jesse Dutra reported to me via Facebook that he saw white beluga whales near the jetties in Nantucket Harbor. Jesse’s sighting was confirmed by several Cape blogs and newspapers, and as of May 14, officials at the Mystic Aquarium had located the three belugas near the Rhode Island Coast. They seemed to be in great health and not wounded or entangled. Mystic Aquarium researchers are trying to figure out if they are part of an endangered population of beluga’s called “Saint Lawrence Belugas. They also hope to discover why the belugas have traveled so far away from home. Mystic’s veterinarian, Dr. Allison Tuttle, speculates that it could be because of Rhode Island’s large influx of the squid population, which are tasty food for these whales. The beluga whale or white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) is an Arctic and sub-Arctic cetacean. Marine mammals in the cetacean family include whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Although whales spend all their time in the continued on page 19

oceans, they are mammals just like us. This means that they are warm blooded, give birth to live young, nurse their young, have traces of hair or fur, and must come to the surface to breathe air through their lungs. This marine mammal is commonly referred to simply as the melonhead (not the nicest name), beluga, or sea canary due to its high-pitched twitter (more about that below). Belugas are adapted to life in the Arctic, with anatomical and physiological characteristics that differentiate it from other cetaceans. Amongst these are its unmistakable all-white color and the absence of a dorsal fin—a dorsal ridge, more prominent in males, replaces this fin found in other whale species. It possesses a distinctive protuberance at the front of its head which houses an echolocation organ called the melon, which in this species is large and plastic (deformable). The soft and flexible blubber around the head gives the beluga the ability to change its facial expressions easily. The beluga's body size is between that of a dolphin's and a true whale’s, with males growing up to 5.5 m (18 ft) long and weighing up to 1,600 kg (3,500 lb). This whale has a stocky body (they prefer to be called big-boned), and they have the greatest percentage of blubber (fat) to mass. Its sense of hearing is highly developed, and it possesses echolocation like many other whales, which allows it to move about and find blowholes under sheet ice. They are sometimes called the “canary of the sea” because of their extended repertoire of vocalizations: whistles, "belches," and squeaks. Belugas are slow swimmers, but can dive down to 700 m (2,300 ft) below the surface. They are opportunistic feeders and their diets vary according to their locations and the season. They mainly eat fish, crustaceans, and other deep-sea invertebrates. Their worldwide population is thought to number around 150,000. They are migratory and the majority of groups spend the winter around the Arctic ice cap; when the sea ice melts in summer, they move to warmer river estuaries and coastal areas, and this year three of them have meandered down to the Cape. The beluga whale was placed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List in 2008 as being "near threatened.” Natural predators are polar bears and killer whales, both rarely if ever seen around Nantucket, but at this rate I am starting to think we should keep an eye out for them. In fact, keep an eye out for anything strange in the water, and feel free to email me at sarah.oktay@umb.edu if you see something interesting.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
WWII from page 10 The U-578 had been stalking the unescorted Polyphemus for five hours before firing three torpedoes into her. The explosions ruined the stern and killed 15 Chinese crew members in their quarters. The remaining crew, passengers and the rescued Norland survivors abandoned ship in five lifeboats and the 6,000 ton ship, with its cargo of wool and wheat, sank within an hour. Shortly after the survivors got into their lifeboats the U-boat surfaced and the Germans questioned the captain about his torpedoed vessel. The Germans gave the survivors a carton of cigarettes and directions to New York City and left . The five open boats tried to remain together but on the second night they separated. On May 29 an unknown U-boat surfaced by one of the boats early in the morning and asked why they were adrift at sea, wished them a good trip and departed. Soon after the 15 men were picked up by a Portuguese steamer named Maria Amelia. A German submarine had also been stalking the Maria Amelia that day, but stopped when it saw her neutrality markings. The Portuguese crew delivered the 15 survivors to New York City on June 1. Also on June 1, 10 men on another life boat were picked up by an American fishing boat 50 miles northeast of the Nantucket Lightship and taken to New Bedford. Twelve men from the third life boat were picked up about 130 miles east of Nantucket on June 2, transferred to an American fishing boat and taken to New Bedford on June 3. Seventeen men from the fourth life boat were rescued by a Portuguese ship on June 3 and taken to

New York City on June 5. The final life boat containing 10 men also encountered a U Boat while drifting at sea. On May 29 the boat surfaced to speak with them. The Germans gave the survivors water and directions to the nearest land and left. The next day the same U Boat surfaced again and gave the crew bread and a bottle of rum. Five days later the survivors were finally picked up by US Coast Guard cutter General Greene on June 5 and brought to Nantucket. The U-578, captained by Ernst-August Rehwinkel, who at age 41 was one World War II’s oldest U-boat commanders, struck again on June 2 when his submarine sank the Norwegian merchant ship Berganger southeast of Cape Cod. Once again the Germans surfaced, questioned the survivors, took their pictures and departed. The 47 survivors were rescued and brought to land on June 4. Two months later, U-Boat captain Rehwinkel, his crew and the U 578 were all inexplicably lost on August 6 in the Bay of Biscay. All this maritime destruction so close to the island put Nantucketers on edge and soon rumors circulated claiming that the US government would take control of the island and that the US Navy would seize all the steamships serving the island. Afraid that the rumors would scare away summer visitors, Nantucket selectmen put advertisements in the Inquirer & Mirror that sternly admonished those who had spread them and reassured readers that Nantucket would be a safe. On June 14, The New York Times ran an article announcing Nantucket summer steamship service and urging people to vacation on “charming Nantucket,” a news item that may have been instigated by the Nantucket Public Relations Committee which was tasked by selectmen to address the issue.

put it—“a spirit of independence and executive ability for which Nantucket women have in past been noted.” Widowed and already in her late 30s at the opening of the Civil War, she volunteered for service and subsequently was mustered in as a regular Union Army nurse. She served the last eighteen months of her enlistment at a hospital in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, and after the war she made her home in Newport. In 1890, “by special act of Congress she was granted a pension,” which she enjoyed until her death in 1898. Other Nantucketers who should be honored for their parts in Civil War history include teacher Anna Gardner, her student Annie Nahar, and Maria Mitchell’s brother William Forster Mitchell. These three went south in the immediate wake of the war to help educate people newly freed from slavery. A policy of withholding literacy from slaves had created an enormous need of schooling for people of all ages. Anna Gardner went first to New Bern, North Carolina, and later to Virginia to establish schools, to design curricula, to teach, and to serve as a school principal. William Forster Mitchell went to teach in the same area. Annie Nahar, daughter of a seamstress and a barber in Nantucket’s black community, had been a beneficiary of the 1840s struggle to racially integrate Nantucket’s public schools. Of these three Nantucket educators, she traveled the greatest distance to begin her service—first to New Orleans, where she was already teaching in 1865, and then on to teach in Texas. Joseph Farnham, who had attended primary school in Nantucket when Annie Nahar was in grammar school, wrote that she could “unquestionably have passed as white…yet she was of African parentage, was true to and dwelt with colored people. She was a young woman of rare character and attractiveness.” Had he known what she did after she left Nantucket, he might have added that she was every bit as courageous as the men whose names are inscribed on the obelisk on Upper Main Street. Frances Karttunen’s books, The Other Islanders: People Who Pulled Nantucket’s Oars and Law and Disorder in Old Nantucket are available at Nantucket bookstores. Frances Ruley Karttunen's latest book about Nantucket history is Nantucket's North Shore: A Neighborhood History. All her Nantucket books are available from local book sellers.

The six musicians use mouth percussion, real-time digital processing and innovative musical arrangements to create rock music-style harmonies and rhythms that also mimic instrumental accompaniment. Born and raised on Nantucket, Caleb Whelden attended Nantucket public schools. He graduated in 1999 from Nantucket High School, where he performed with the school’s well-known vocal group The Naturals. After high school, Whelden sang in The Cobbletones, the popular Nantucket all-male singing group that performs at many local events, off-island commercial venues, and can still be heard singing on lower Main Street during the summer season. Whelden graduated Ithaca College with an emphasis on vocal music education, after singing for four years as part of the all-male a cappella group Ithacapella. He first auditioned and won a spot in 2003 in Five O’Clock Shadow, which he has been part of through that group’s two-year hiatus and other changes. Whelden also launched the singing groups Slapdash Graduate and Blueprint. Along with singing in Five O’Clock Shadow, in 2010 Whelden joined Overboard, which is among well-known vocal groups in the United States and for which he is also the group’s director and musical arranger. Tickets to the Dreamland performance are free, but to ensure admission, advance reservations are recommended, available under CONCERTS at NantucketDreamland.org or by calling the Dreamland box office at 508-325-4822. The visit of Five O’Clock Shadow to Nantucket Public Schools and its public concert are made possible through a grant to Nantucket Arts Council by Nantucket Golf Club Foundation.

Featured Restaurant: The Restaurant at Miacomet
A Nantucket Club Open To All
Shrimp Tempura
Clubs on Nantucket Island tend to have initiation fees in the six figures, exclusive membership, and wait lists generations long. But there’s one island club dedicated to serving the Nantucket community and visitors as well as their members: Miacomet Golf Club. Located mid-island, the 18-hole golf course, putting green, driving range, and restaurant are all open to the public. We cannot personally speak to the quality of the golf (those who do know have told us it’s an excellent course with a fun layout and tournament condition greens), but we can tell you that the Restaurant at Miacomet Golf is outstanding. Surrounded by immaculate greens, undulating walkways, and beautiful views, this is the perfect setting for a haughty restaurant, only it’s not. This is “old Nantucket,” where a bank president chats comfortably with a gardener, and a visiting real estate mogul (read billionaire) compares scores with an island fisherman. On any given afternoon or evening, you’ll find a crosssection of islanders happily sipping cocktails (they serve a killer Bloody Mary), enjoying the company, and choosing their favorites from a menu that ranges from Burgers, Turkey Clubs, and Fish-and-Chips to Malabar Curry, Seared Salmon, and Black Angus Filet. The main dining room is roomy and comfortable. It’s a favorite for gath-

erings of family and friends; if your group is large, there’s a private dining room that’s perfect for rehearsal dinners, dinner meetings, baby showers, and special celebrations. Under the skilled guidance of manager Kate O’Connor, service here is friendly and welcoming but also professional and knowledgable. Count yourself lucky if Kenny is your server: his good humor and expert suggestions made our recent meal a real pleasure. We started our recent dinner with some of the best Fried Calamari we’ve tasted in some time. Tender, tiny, and seasoned with just the right touch of salt, the rings are lightly coated in cormeal that crisps deliciously. There’s not a drop of grease, so you can enjoy these with just a squeeze of fresh lemon, although the robust tomato aioli served alongside is very tasty. The Crispy Duck Wings are a fun take on a pub classic. Larger and meatier than the chicken wings served at every casual restaurant on the island, the crunchy coating gives way to moist and flavorful duck at every bite. A splendid sweet-and-sour plum sauce is drizzled over the wings, and a side pickled bok choy adds a delightful pucker. If Sauteed Baby Spinach Salad Chicken Livers are a new delight for you, this is place to try them for the first time. If you adore this classic treat, then you’ll love the preparation served at The Restaurant at Miacomet. These tender morsels, and especially the port wine glaze and tracings of sweet banyuls vinegar, are rich and satisfying. The Shrimp Tempura and Baby Spinach Salad tied for our favorite appetizer of the evening. The shrimp are plump and succulent inside their hot and crunchy batter. They’re served on a chilled bed of wakame with a tangysweet chili sauce. The Spinach Salad is light yet flavorful. The fresh greens and artichoke hearts are tossed in a summery lemon thyme vinaigrette, and plenty of creamy goat cheese is crumbled overtop. If you like a light evening meal, then you can order a Grilled Burger or Chicken Breast, Grilled Tuna Steak Sandwich, or Traditional Fish & Chips with fresh cod. But we think it would be a shame to pass on the delectable selection of Spring Entrees. We were happy to see that the restaurant is still serving their spectacular

Vol. 45 No. 3 • Our 45th Season!
Black Tiger Shrimp Scampi, one of our “Best Bites of 2014.” We decided on this visit to try shrimp another way: in Chef Prashanth Ravi’s Malabar Coconut Curry. Prepared entirely from scratch with hand-blended spices, this dish is Southern Indian comfort food. It’s spicy, Malabar Coconut Curry but the flavor survives the heat. You can eat the curry by the spoonful if you like it hot, or stir in some chilled yogurt and spiced basmati rice to cool the fire. It’s been a few years since we’ve enjoyed swordfish steak as good as the one they serve in The Restaurant at Miacomet. Their Grilled Swordfish reveals this chef’s finesse with fish: it’s cooked through yet moist, beautifully seasoned, and served over mashed potatoes in a pool of luscious grape beurre blanc (see cover photo). Pair this with a sparkling glass of NV Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin from their well-matched wine list and celebrate summer! It’s a testament to this chef’s classic training that his sauces are so deeply flavored that they leave a lasting memory. The Herb Roasted Cornish Game Hen is drenched in just such a pan sauce: dark and richly flavorful, it left us purring with delight. The good-sized hen is stuffed with wild rice and herbs—the skin is sinfully crispy and the meat is flavorful and succulent, from breast to leg. Restaurant at Miacomet. Cooked exactly to temperature and fork tender, the thick filet is served with remarkable blue cheese mashed potatoes in a red wine jus that is simply heavenly. Even the vegetables deserve high praise: cauliflower, carrots, and wax beans served with both the beef and the chicken are cooked to a perfect tender-crisp texture.

Their Classic Creme Brulee makes an ideal ending to a summer meal: satiny custard topped with caramelized crust and a single, ripe and juicy strawberry. Their Key Lime Pie has just the right balance of sweet and tart, and is one of our Brunch favorites here. It was the two chocolate desserts on their Spring Dinner Menu that we considered the real standouts. We adore the sweet, crisp base on their Chocolate Mousse Hazelnut Praline Crunch as well as the mousse that is both very light and very chocolately. If you like a spirited finish, then the Wasted Brownie, soaked in bourbon and topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, will quickly become your favorite, as it is ours. Meet out at Miacomet for brunch, lunch, or dinner, it’s the Nantucket Club that welcomes everyone. by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.

A Weekend to Remember from page 9
For Rosemary Syrup 2 cups water 1/2 cup sugar 4 rosemary sprigs, rinsed Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer over moderately low heat for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the syrup and chill. For the Punch: Using a knife, peel the oranges, removing all of the white pith. Working over a bowl, cut in between the membranes to release the sections into the bowl. In a punch bowl, mix the wine and Rosemary Syrup. A dd the oranges and cucumber slices; let stand for 1 hour. Garnish with the mint and serve over ice.
“BEAN HOLE” BEANS I love the history to this Maine tradition. According to experts, Native Americans originated bean hole beans by baking beans with bear grease and maple syrup in clay pots covered with deerskins and buried in coals in the ground. In modern times, the traditional bean hole is a stone-lined pit in which a fire is built until a good bed of coals forms. A cast iron bean pot is lowered into the pit and simmered until morning. Here, we have simplified the tradition, although I highly recommend if ya got a nice fire pit to try this method out first hand! 1 pound beans. Navy, Pea, Yellow Eye, Marafax or other Heirloom bean 1 pound salt pork or ½ cup shortening ¼ c. molasses 2 Tbsp. maple syrup 1 ½ tsp. dry mustard ¾ tsp. salt (for salt pork) or 1 tsp. salt for shortening ¼ tsp. pepper ½ medium onion, diced Soak beans overnight, drain; cover with fresh water and simmer for about an hour (until bean skin “flays” when you blow on a bean). Combine with remaining ingredients; add boiling water to cover plus a little more (about ½ inch above level of beans after stirring). Cook in a slow cooker for 6 to 8 hours.
SKILLET-FRIED CHICKEN To make fried chicken feel less daunting, start this recipe the day before and break it up into smaller tasks; get your flour measured, your wet ingredients together and your tools gathered ahead of time so when it comes time to fry, you will be cool as a cucumber. 3 T kosher salt, divided 2 t plus 1 T freshly ground black pepper 1-1/2 t paprika 3/4 t cayenne pepper 1/2 t garlic powder 1/2 t onion powder 1 3–4-lb. chicken, cut into 10 pieces, backbone and wing tips removed 1 C buttermilk 1 large egg 3 C all-purpose flour 1 T cornstarch Peanut oil (for frying) Whisk 2 Tbsp. salt, 2 tsp. black pepper, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, and onion powder in a small bowl. Season chicken with spices. Place chicken in a medium bowl, cover, and chill overnight. Let chicken stand covered at room temperature for 1 hour. Whisk buttermilk, egg, and 1/2 cup water in a medium bowl. Whisk flour, cornstarch, remaining 1 T. salt, and remaining 1 T. pepper in a 9x13x2" baking dish. Pour oil into a 10"–12" cast-iron skillet or other heavy straight-sided skillet (not nonstick) to a depth of 3/4." Prop a deep-fry thermometer in oil so bulb is submerged. Heat over medium-high heat until thermometer registers 350°. Meanwhile, set a wire rack inside a large rimmed baking sheet.

DO NOT USE PAPER TOWELS: these equal steam, and steam equals soggy fried chicken. Working with 1 piece at a time, dip chicken in buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip back into bowl. Dredge in flour mixture, shake off excess. Place 5 pieces of chicken in skillet. Fry chicken, turning with tongs every 1–2 minutes and adjusting heat to maintain a steady temperature of 300°–325°, until skin is deep golden brown and an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part of chicken registers 165°, about 10 minutes for wings and 12 minutes for thighs, legs, and, breasts. Using tongs, remove chicken from skillet, allowing excess oil to drip back into skillet; transfer chicken to prepared rack. Repeat with remaining chicken pieces; let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Also delicious served room temperature.

Remembering from page 5
slicers and a wading pool for the lobsters! The most mundane and prosaic of Nantucket stores creates a fun house mirror of itself, squints at the crowds of August, and hopes that some creativity and more checkout aisles will bring more joy and cash. Hope burns bright on Memorial Day, for the grocers, for the Boxed Water purveyors, and for the rest of us hoping to pay our mortgages, credit card bills, and student loans. We stride into the foggy future guided by the mistakes of the past and lit by the hope that this new lawnmower, this new set of radio ads, or this new box of water will be the better mouse trap that will drive the world to our doors. Or will be the new Lemonade that Tom and Tom didn’t invent. The Boxed Water creators have the samples ready for those bright, loud, and dehydrated Figawi mornings. In all of our hope for new supermarkets, new lines, and new teas, we forgot to hire the band for the Memorial Day Parade up to the Soldiers Memorials on Prospect Hill. As a result we will have no parade. I am sure that someone is steeped in shame and embarrassment at the oversight, as I am also sure that someone else will point out that we are all missing The True Meaning of Memorial Day. Perhaps. I know less about the mind of soldiers than I do about the fashions and desires of the shopping public. I can only guess what drew those 73 young men to join George Macy and the Union cause back in the 1860s, or any other soldier. I suspect, as in every war, they joined for a series of reasons, including boredom, friendship, and money. Their community celebrated them, wished them well when they sailed off, and mourned them when they returned too soon. However, those young men would probably agree with Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr, that the goal of the soldier was to end war. No family of the deceased would celebrate Memorial Day by recruiting new soldiers for new wars. Instead, the reflection and grace of Memorial Day comes in the echoing silence after Taps is played. The howitzer does not fire, the bugle does not call, and the drum does not muster. The sacrifice of the soldier, as Holmes

spoke, was to ensure that nobody else would have to get wounded, get sick, or die for that cause. When we gather around their green and grassy graves, we thank them for dying so that we, and our children, don’t have to die in a trench or in a bloody field. Every soldier, I suppose, goes off to fight in a war to end all wars. Their deaths come in service to that great cause The goal of the soldier is to be forgotten. The goal of the soldier is to make war obsolete, so that sons, grandsons, and great grandsons never have to hear the bugle call or the wounded scream. On the other hand, the goal of all of those great-grandsons should be to remember what coins earned this warm and sunny day. The Figawi tent was fought for and earned by blood that has long since turned to dust. It could have been otherwise. In the new century, wars are no longer the great common cause that rends and knits the country together. We do not have lint drives, blackout inspectors, or draft boards. The young men do not spend their weekends marching and practicing. Instead, we have created a group of professional soldiers that travel to foreign lands for their bloody work. We follow them as if they were a professional sports teams. We put stickers on our cars, wear their uniforms, and watch shows about them. We are more likely to know a professional ball player than a member of Seal Team 6. All new starts arise on the graves of those that went before. The new restaurant opens in the same walls of the old one, the new Stop and Shop arises from the ruins of the Finast, and the “Boxed Water” comes from old plastic bottles. The new May morning opens with the peaceful silence earned by those who rest below. We should remember what a gift we have been given.
