Nearly 170 years ago, lifesaving efforts by Nantucket residents averted a worse maritime disaster by rescuing 226 shipwrecked emigres from Ireland.

This summer, Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum brings to life the 1851 voyage of the passenger ship British Queen, its demise, and how Nantucketers saved the lives of all on board.

The crew and passengers of the full-masted sailing ship British Queen expected the worst after being stranded off Nantucket on December, 17, 1851.

Imminent Front

by Robert P. Barsanti The trucks are backing up on Old South Road: roofing trucks, plumbing trucks, landscapers with trailers, the ubiquitous UPS brown truck, and a truck with a wooden Chris Craft on its way down to Children’s Beach and the ramp.

We all crept forward.

It wasn’t raining.

Since March, the skies have dripped water most days. One day comes wrapped in fog, the next in wind whipped sheets, the next in sprinkles. Then the dance repeats. This morning, the sun lurked behind racing billows of fog.

In this space between the raindrops and the mosquitoes, I hoped to get out to Tom Nevers and mow the lawn for the guests. All of the spring rain has to go somewhere, and a healthy percentage had flowed into the twitchy growth of grass and weeds that passed for lawn. Their time was coming.

We all looked at the sky. The great grey lid of winter had thinned. We lived under the roof of a grey tent, just as we had in February, in December, and in November. With the imminence of spring and boat schedules and traffic, the season would arrive, ready or not. The sky was pregnant with change; it would be born.

Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer in the rest of the world.

White shoes come out with the patio furniture and the kebab skewers. A signal is passed, then the women are wearing summer dresses, halter tops, and shorts. Out here, that signal gets lost in the fog, as Mayvember slips into Junuary. Perhaps summer might begin on the Fourth of July. Hard to tell.

Nonetheless the season was imminent. It may be stuck behind a boat and a UPS truck, but it was coming.

I crept along behind J & M Landscape and passed the Fairgrounds intersection. The plywood had been pulled up, the road narrowed, and the traffic returned. Town Meeting had held off modernity and the third rotary in a half mile by a few votes. No doubt many, waiting at this intersection this July, will remember and imagine a future with more circular motion.

Eventually I headed east, the rain held off, and I pulled into the house on

Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation As people return to the island it is often noted which restaurants have closed and reopened as something else, which streets now have stop signs, and what houses have newly popped up. The same is true for various conservation properties that may have undergone management over the winter.

Case in point, heading out to the Linda Loring Nature Foundation on Eel Point Road, there have been some big clear cuts removing several pine stands.

In December of 2018, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation was awarded a $48,200 grant from the MassWildlife Habitat Management Grant Program to create and improve grassland habitats by removing non-native invasive tree species. It was the largest grant given this grant cycle.

The grant was used to fund the removal of standing dead and live invasive, non-native Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii) in an effort to restore sandplain grassland habitat.

The existing vegetation on the Foundation’s Eel Point Road property consists of a mix of sandplain grasslands, sandplain heathlands, and coastal shrublands.

In recent decades, the landscape has been invaded by Japanese black pine, a non-native invasive tree native to Japan and China. This fast-growing tree was originally planted in the early 1900s to provide a windbreak. However, Japanese black pine is susceptible to a turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus terebrans) feeding on the inner bark of the lower four feet of the trunk, and the tree can wind up as standing dead after reaching maturity. What were just a few trees decades ago are now large stands encroaching on sandplain grassland habitat which is host to rare and threatened plants and animals.

Managing the trees is a high priority for the Foundation, as these pines are fire hazards, human health hazards as dead snags, and a threat to native biodiversity.

According to Executive Director Kitty Pochman, the project marks a turning point in land management the Loring Foundation.

By removing the invasive Japanese black pines, the landscape will be opened up to the grasslands and native heathlands beneath. The removal of the trees reintroduces the landscape to the wind and salt spray, which helped shape the landscape originally.

“Stewardship of our 108 acres of preserved land is a high priority for the LLNF. We are thrilled to be awarded this important grant from the commonwealth that will further our research and conservation goals,” Pochman said.

The direct treatment area is about six acres of nearly solid pine, both alive and standing dead. However, the effective area—the area that will benefit from treatment—is estimated to be over 50 acres as natural ecosystem processes are reinstated.

Within the treatment areas, there are also over 140 recorded individuals of the state-listed species of special concern, sandplain blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium fuscatum). This species requires open sandplain grassland and heathland habitat. The Japanese black pine trees are encroaching on these plants, crowding and shading them out.

With the help of skilled contractors, LLNF began management of the pines in January and February, when it is favorable to remove Japanese black pines.

Nantucket is now home to a handful of oyster farms. While these farms may be small in size, they are able to grow in distinctively different areas that show the diversity of our water cultureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s influence. From Great Harbor Oysters, to RETSYO near the Wauwinet dock, you also have Pocomo Meadow and Fifth Bend in between. These tasty bivalves offer a certain salinity that is best matched with sparkling wine.

Founded in 1982, Roederer Estate is an iconic sparkling wine producer in the foggy Anderson Valley of Mendocino County. This California property is owned by the Champagne house of Louis Roederer. They only source estate grown fruit and are dedicated to farming their vineyards organically and biodynamical. Oak-aged wines from the estateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reserve cellars are added to the blend, creating a multi-vintage cuvĂŠe in the traditional Louis Roederer style. Roederer Estate Brut Sparkling Wine NV is made of 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. It is crisp and elegant with complex pear, spice and hazelnut flavors. The palate is lightly fruity with great finesse and depth of flavor.

STRIPED BASS Fishing for striped bass in the waters of Nantucket has such a unique appeal. The fish can be found in a wide variety of places, along the shoreline, just outside the surf, or in the numerous shoals offshore. They are available to fish throughout the summer and even into the late fall, which is still an ideal time to visit the island. Also known as stripers, this variety of fish is a smart seafood choice because striped bass is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations. The meat of a striped bass is rich and flavorfulâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a happy medium between flaky and meaty. Its texture lies between cod and swordfish. This fish calls for a wine of the same stature.

Domaine Jessiaume is a beautiful property located in Santenay, in the CĂ´te de Beaune of Burgundy, France. They own twenty-two acres of vines that span from the Nantucketâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister city of Beaune to the charming village of Santenay, including holdings also in Pommard, Volnay and AuxeyDuresses. The viticulture terroir of each vineyard is linked to the notion of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Climatsâ&#x20AC;? in each of these distinctive regions.

The wines at this property are made with minimal intervention and being converted to organic viticulture. Maison Jessiaume Bourgogne Blanc 2017 is made from 100% Chardonnay from a blend of vineyards in this region. It is floral, yet fruity on the nose with a generous mouth offering sweetness and nuances of pastry. It is aged in used oak barrels on the lees for 12 months, adding richness and texture to the wine. The simplicity of this wine makes it ever so drinkable with your fresh catch of the day!

Sandpiper. The lawnmower sat upright in the bed of the pick-up, tied down with bungee cords and good wishes. Mowing lawns with the push mower had gone from an eccentric choice that could be rationalized with some nod towards frugality to a particularly odd practice. Any of the real landscapers could pop in here with some orbital thing and mow the yard in about twenty minutes and then move on. I have absolutely no excuse other than this was the way I had always mowed. As if technology and industry somehow didn’t count in this version of the future.

I dropped the rear gate, pulled out the two-by-fours, and pushed the mower into position. When I was younger and more foolish, I would put a foot on the rear wheel, spring up, and walk the mower down on the planks. But, in an excess of caution, I decided I didn’t want to harm the ancient back gate on the truck and wouldn’t put extra strain on it. So, I reached into the bed, grabbed the front of the mower and gently pulled on it. And my back scrunched itself up. I got the mower on the ground, then I lay on the grass next to it.

I felt each muscle on the right side contract. The one close to my spine tightened, and then the next three tightened, then a shooting pain shot down to my right knee, ankle, and big toe. I was on my back, in pain, with a car near me, the lawn mower with in feet, and my phone in the cab.

Above me, the sun dimmed and brightened behind the rolling fog. A sea gull circled very high up, and I hoped he didn’t notice me.

Slowly, I transformed from misfortune, to tragedy, to joke as the seagull circled high above. Then it was joined by another. I heard the laughter of my death at the Angler’s Club, at the Admiralty, even at Sankaty. Pecked to death by gulls then mocked over Bud Light.

And it started to sprinkle.

Shame tasks me. It stretched out my right leg until the cramp straightened and the pain eased. I rolled over and pushed my butt into the air. Each muscle in my back unwound, then wound back, then unwound again until I could rise on all fours. And then stand.

Then I mowed the yard. I ignored the pain, I pushed on through the contractions, until it all subsided into an ache that I could almost pretend wasn’t really there. I pushed the mower back up the two by fours at a run before my back gave out again. Then I walked the street.

Things won’t always be this good. Time is an arrow, pointing down. The young man has left; the young man could trap the inside linebacker, could walk thirty-six holes with two golf bags on each shoulder, and could carry load after load of cedar shingles up a thirty-foot ladder. When the going went weird, he went pro and left an old man twisted on the ground next to his pickup truck.

The years twisted his back; next time, he may not get up before the gulls notice.

Things won’t always be this good. This house will be sold and someone else, with a modern mower, will patrol between the scrub oak. And there will be storms. And the stock market will either crash or soar higher and push us all off. We ignore change as if it were the weather. But change continues to seep inland, be it from realtors, bankers, or weathermen.

Before I took a chance at sitting in the car, I climbed up to the deck. Each step stretched the muscles a little bit more. Up top, I paced. The sun had finally emerged under the cloud deck and burned the island golden. The waves broke where the Navy Base once was, the gull circled, and the sun sank lower. Our day was ending.

No matter how you choose to prepare your tuna for consumption, an excellent match would be a wine of the similar vibrant color. Cloudline Pinot Noir hails from the Willamette Valley, Oregon. This wine is vinified under the watchful eye of Véronique Drouhin-Boss, whose family hails from Burgundy. The wine is bottled in eco-glass, which is 20% lighter than most wine bottles. LOBSTER If fishing isn’t your sport, and you prefer to do the work on land, lobsters are the way to go for another seafood delicacy found on-island. While you could go to a lovely waterfront restaurant that will serve you lobster already out of the shell, there is something to be said about working for your next meal by having the experience of taking the lobster out of the shell yourself.

Nantucket’s favorite sip of summer should be close at hand. Hogwash Rosé of Grenache 2018 is just pure fun in a glass. This wine was started when Winemaker Tuck Beckstoffer was invited to co-host a charity fundraiser featuring southern barbeque. Coincidentally Tuck had been experimenting with making rosé from a special Grenache vineyard in the Central Coast of California that he thought would be ideal for a rosé that paid homage to the rosés from the South of France and yet distinctly California in style. This wine is salmon-pink in color with fresh, lively aromas of rose, raspberry and orange.

The flavors of mandarin and peach are balanced with soft acidity, making your mouth water for more. No hogwash about this match made in Nantucket heaven!

aground during a snowy blizzard, in icy shallow water 12 miles from Nantucket Harbor.

Captain Christopher Conway ordered his ship’s sails to be cut and stowed away to stabilize the ship in the roaring wind; seawater washed over the ship and began filling the passenger hold. The more than 200 Irish souls on board, immigrants fleeing famine and journeying in hopes of better lives in America, had endured a 3,000-mile trip during an unexpected two months at sea and were now facing probable death. Drenched and cold, they huddled together in groups to ward off the life-threatening elements.

Thankfully, a fire-watchmen in a Nantucket church tower spotted the ship in distress. Almost 36 hours after the British Queen was grounded, seasoned mariners on the island were able to launch a harrowing rescue effort, which saved the lives of all on board, including families with children and the ship’s crew. In the end, just two already-ill passengers had died during the British Queen’s stranding, before the Nantucket lifesavers arrived.

Opening this Saturday, May 25 and continuing through the 2019 season, the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum will tell the dramatic story of The British Queen. Located on 158 Polpis Road, this museum preserves and shares the memory of the brave islanders who time and time again risked their lives to save shipwrecked mariners.

During the 19th Century, hundreds of ships passed by Nantucket Island each day, all navigating without the benefit of modern nautical technology. Unpredictable storms, dense fog, and strong currents often caught even the most experienced sailors off-guard. Treacherous shoals and inclement weather led to more than 700 shipwrecks in the surrounding waters of Nantucket, causing the area to be dubbed “a graveyard of the Atlantic.”

Accounts of the dramatic rescue tell about the touch-and-go transfer of passengers from the British Queen by harnessing them in ropes and lowering them onto boats from Nantucket—a group of two schooners and a paddlewheel steamboat put into service as rescue craft. The height of Nantucket’s days as a whaling port had passed, but many expert seamen still lived on the continued on page 18

island and were part of seafaring ventures including the salvaging of wrecked ships.

Once aboard the Nantucket vessels, the passengers from the British Queen were taken to the island’s Straight Wharf, where townspeople welcomed them with dry clothes, food, and shelter in heated churches, public buildings, and private homes.

After a six days on the island, most of the British Queen passengers continued their trip to New York on Christmas Day, 1851, aboard the Telegraph, the same paddlewheel steamer that had been part of Part of the permanent collection their rescue. A few stayed behind, reportedly appreciative of the warm welcome given to them on Nantucket and happy to settle there instead of venturing further.

Today, descendants of both the British Queen passengers and rescuers are among Nantucket residents. Prominent among descendants of survivors is the Mooney family, descended from passengers Robert Mooney and his bride Julia.

Parents of seven children, the couple became prosperous farmers on the island.

Their grandson served as sheriff on the island, and their great-grandson Robert F. Mooney, who died in 2016, became a prominent local lawyer, historian, and author who was elected to the state legislature and whose children currently live on Nantucket. He also served on the board of Nantucket Shipwreck and continued on page 19

Lifesaving Museum.

One of the only known physical remnants of the wreck, the quarterboard from the British Queen, is owned by the Mooney family and is part of this summer’s exhibit, along with first-hand accounts of the shipwreck, contemporary newspaper reports, and stories of the Irish immigrant experience from their homeland and streets of Dublin to their landing on Nantucket’s Straight Wharf.

In addition to this season’s featured exhibit, the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum also displays permanent exhibits that are devoted to the history of Nantucket lifesaving, famous shipwrecks and rescues, life-saving equipment, the daily routine at a life-saving station, and the workings of the modern-day United States Coast Guard. Their collection of more than 5,000 artifacts includes a period surfboat, beach carts, vintage photographs, and a Fresnel lens from Brant Point Lighthouse and Great Point Lighthouse.

The museum also hosts fun family events such as An Evening of Shipwreck Stories & Sea Shanties on June 19, Pirates & Mermaids Sail with Nanpuppets aboard the Lynx, a Maritime Speaker series, maritime music events, and Family Days on June 24, July 10, and August 14. Starting on July 9, weekly programs for children are held every Tuesday morning through the summer. Under the terms of the grant, the work was completed by late April.

Winter is the best time to manage Japanese Black Pine. Similar pines, like the native pitch pine (Pinus rigida) have been used as roost trees for breeding Northern Long Eared Bats. These bats are state listed and federally endangered, so protecting their habitat is a priority. Because of this, there is a state-mandated moratorium on pine removal (of all species) during bat breeding season between June 1 and July 31.

Any pitch pines that were present within the management areas at LLNF were spared during the removal process.

Twelve towns and organizations across the state were awarded more than $300,000 in grants for wildlife habitat improvement projects. The MassWildlife Habitat Management Grant Program was developed to establish partnerships between MassWildlife and private and municipal landowners to enhance habitat and increase recreational opportunities on properties across the state.

This year, funds provided through the grant program will benefit 12 wildlife habitat improvement projects, including LLNF as well as the Nantucket Conservation Foundation.

“Making smart investments in projects to restore and manage protected lands across the Commonwealth furthers our administration’s dedication to land conservation,” Gov. Charlie Baker said. “With this funding, municipalities and local organizations will be able to significantly improve habitat for rare and endangered species and enhance outdoor recreational opportunities.”

In early May, Senator Julian Cyr and State Representative Dylan Fernandez came to LLNF to tour the managed areas and learn more about island conservation and management.

“Stewardship of natural habitats is critical for communities on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket,” Sen. Cyr said. “These monies will help ensure that native wildlife in our unique region of the Commonwealth is precontinued on page 24

Located in the heart of the island on Easton Street, this fine dining yet family-friendly establishment is not only a destination for many but a prominent piece of Nantucket’s history. Created in the 1920s, the hotel was originally a collection of rustic cottages. Founder Elizabeth T The mACKtail, Surfside Sour, and Ludwig dreamed of the day Northern Exposure Cocktails her vision would become the finest harbor-side hotel on Nantucket.

Smiling staff, wide doors, and warm decor greeted us as we were escorted to our seats. Though the sun was setting, the views of the harbor were still stunning. We all looked forward to returning when the weather is warmer and days are longer, each of us planning to take full advantage of the BPG bounty that is outdoor seating.

A shining bucket of breads graced our table, overflowing with a variety of soft bakes and crunchy crisps. The wine list is a connoisseur’s dream with hundreds of bottles from around the world, and beer drinkers rejoice over a superb selection of local New England microbrews. Since the cocktail list had been freshened up for the spring season, we decided to try a few house favorites.

The Surfside Sour is a tantalizing take on the classic Mai Tai. Diplomatico Mantuano Rum and Plantation Pineapple rum are tied together with a few dashes of bitters, a pour of Macadamia nut orgeat, and squeeze of fresh lemon. It’s opaque and frosty and so sippable. The herbal, earthy, fruity, and fragrant Northern Exposure mixes Elephant Gin, a small-batch spirit combining rare African botanicals with fresh apples. Caraway and fennel infused vodka and a ginger & green apple verjus make it complete. We were all surprised and delighted by The mACKtail, the perfect balance of Los Poblanos Organic Lavender Syrup, lemon, and club soda. It sparkles with beautiful balance and had us coming back for more. The surprising part? It is non-alcoholic.

to taste what’s new. The options are concise yet diverse, wide-ranging for every taste, and never overwhelming. After studying the starters, we knew just where to begin.

The Marinated White Asparagus is buttery and delicate, a celery root slaw provides a clean crunch and pickled quail eggs bring a perfect pungency.

Toasted parmesan serves as seasoning over all and fresh radishes are purple, peppery, and fun. This dish smacks of spring.

We love the charred smokiness of the impressively tender Warm Grilled Marinated White Asparagus Octopus with andouille sausage.

Plated with creamy fingerling potatoes, and refreshing fennel, this dish is a work of art and so are the flavors.

Colors jumped off the plate of Caramelized Cauliflower Mousse (cover photo). The pure white molded mousse is soft and subtly sweet, swirling with the fresh flavors of the season. Asparagus and beets add an earthy bite to the appetizer, while the toffee notes in the brown butter crumble enhance the sweetness throughout.

Our favorite starter of the evening is the Pineland Farms Beef Carpaccio. A canvas of barely browned, razorthin, melt-in-your-mouth beef medallions cover the plate in a decorative pattern. Atop are smatterings of rich truffle aioli and black garlic, tangy pickled red onions, and shimeji mushrooms. Brioche croutons add a crunchy contrast. This dish will have you coming back for more.

The Brant Point Grill is the only place you need to go for your steak and lobster fix. Their beef is all Prime Aged Rib Eye sourced from Pineland Farms in Maine, where cattle is raised humanely and fed a strict vegetarian diet. This is simply the highest quality and best tasting beef available, where farmers practice the “Never-Ever” protocol: no antibiotics, no added hormones, and no animal byproducts. Everyone’s favorite crustaceans are brought in by boat daily. The standard mode of preparation is on the grill, but lobsters here can also be steamed, boiled, or baked to please any patron.

The cook proved as good as the cut as the magnificent marbling of fat just melted away in the 16-ounce Prime Aged Rib Eye. Underneath the charred, caramelized crust was perfectly pink, medium rare meat, and each bite was better than the last. There are four side sauces to choose from for steaks served at Brant Point Grill, and we couldn’t choose just one. Each adds a different edge to the steak, from the tantalizing tang of the bernaise to the lovable funk of the blue cheese, but our favorite was Executive Chef Thomas William Pearson’s rich peppercorn.

First the turf, then the surf: the Atlantic Halibut Fillet is a seafood sensation.

The crackling sear on the fish gives way to pearlescent, flaky flesh.

Atlantic Halibut Served alongside baby leeks and broccolini, all of it takes a dip in a wonderful crab, clam, and mussel sauce. Fingerling potatoes help soak up every drop.

vegetables encircles the beautifully browned tart, dollops of tomato jam adds an edge of color and sweetness.

At first glance, the Spiced Rohan Duck almost had us fooled, with its rosy medium rare color camouflaging itself as beef. One taste and you’ll understand why this is the best duck we have ever tasted. Fork tender, it’s served alongside the deep, rich flavors of Spiced Rohan Duck duck sausage and caramelized endives. We loved a piece of the sweet-tart stewed rhubarb with every bite.

For those of us who like to start the night early, the bar at BPG serves food from 3 pm. There are plenty of options from bites to burgers, but we recommend you try the Lobster Mac and Cheese. The bounty of claw meat within this creamy comfort food is unheard of, and the nutty tang from the Vermont cheddar is just so good with the sweet, tender lobster.

Unlike many fine dining restaurants, the portions here are generous and filling. We were, needless to say, happily stuffed. But Brant Point Grill boasts some of the best desserts on the island, and we just couldn’t say no.

A refreshingly refined Key Lime Tart (cover photo) arrives decked out with white chocolate ganache, raspberry sorbet, and other-worldly dehydrated meringue. Encircled by a spiraling red raspberry coulis, it’s picture perfect and every bite is a different experience.

The Deconstructed Napoleon is a balancing act of sweet and tart. Sinful chocolate mousse practically floated it was so light, and the mango jam and jelly was vibrant and aromatic. Flavors from both could be found in the hazelnut ice cream resting on top.

For the grand finale, the Panna Cotta took the cake. We dreamed of summer gardens while spooning through the chocolate soil and delicious mix of fresh berries, but our favorite component was the basil ice cream.

Following the cutting and removal of woody debris, the LLNF staff are monitoring the treatment areas for regrowth. Part of the restoration process is to see what plants come into the areas that are now clear of Japanese black pines.

At this point, there hasn’t been any addition of seeds. There are plenty of native grasses and forbs in the surrounding area that could naturally seed in and there is the potential for seeds that are still in the soil that have been long-dormant (in the seedbank).

So far, the most excited thing to come up has been a spectacular display of pink lady slipper orchids (Cypripedium acaule) at the western-most management site. While this area has had lady slippers in the past, the removal of the Japanese black pines spurred the emergence of many more blooms than usual.

In the coming years, the LLNF will continue to manage the Japanese black pine on the property; removing pine cones, clipping new sprouts, and cutting down larger stands.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket opens its 2019 Summer Season on Friday, May 24 when they raise the curtain on California Suite.

This popular Neil Simon comedy is composed of four playlets set in a Los Angeles hotel suite, giving snapshots of five couples as they pass through the same swanky rooms in 1970s Los Angeles. On opening night, playgoers can join cast members Kevin Flynn, Timothy Booth, Sarah Fraunfelder, Susan Lucier and Casey Boukus and the TWN creative team after the performance for a beverage and delicious light bites.

And Honor Those Who Served On Sunday, May 26, Nantucket will honor veterans at the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The procession will begin at 1 pm from the American Legion on Washington Street, and wind through town to the War Memorial on Federal Street. It will continue up Main Street to the Civil War Monument, and then proceed on to Prospect Hill Cemetery. At the cemetery, island veterans and those being honored at the 2019 Holiday for Heroes will speak at a solemn ceremony with a flag raising and bagpipers.

Later on Sunday evening, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, four Seal Team Six veterans will be at a Meet & Greet in the VFW Post 8608, 22 New South Road.
