For the Love of the Land by Dr. Sarah T. Bois Director of Research & Education for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation As the Director of Research and Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF), I am often asked about our founder, Linda Loring; who she is and what her vision was in creating the LLNF. Linda Loring is a visionary with conservation and wildlife preservation as her primary focus. At a time when the sleepy island of Nantucket was not the destination it is today, she had a vision of the future. With development on the island she loved slowly increasing, she saw what could happen to the landscape and the creatures that live there. So, in 1957 Linda began purchasing parcels to piece together what would later become over 270 acres of conserved open space between Madaket and Eel Point Roads. Linda’s passion for the land doesn’t stop at the sandplain grasslands, vernal pools, and rolling hills of the land she’s preserved. Her love for wildlife led her to create the LLNF as a wildlife sanctuary. However, her primary goal has always been about education and connecting people, especially children, to nature. She envisioned the Eel Point Road property as an outdoor classroom where people of all ages can come and learn about the environment of Nantucket or simply immerse themselves in the quiet enjoyment of the natural world. She started the process of creating the foundation which bears her name in 1999 when the Linda Loring Nature Foundation became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It wasn’t until 2007, however, that the organization became operational. That’s when the Nantucket Land Council purchased the conservation easement on the entire 270 acres of on Eel Point Road. Linda then divided her personal property, giving 84 acres to start the LLNF. continued on page 22

Dear Absent Ones Despite the superstition that it was bad luck for a woman to be on a ship at sea (except for naked women who were said to calm the waters, but that’s another tale to tell), it was not unheard of for Nantucket women to accompany their husbands on whaling voyages when their husbands were captain. In their Nantucket Corner exhibit for 2017, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) titled “Dear Absent Ones”: The Seafaring Pinkhams, shares the experiences of an island family who went to sea. This exhibition looks at Nantucket seafaring through the eyes of the Pinkhams, a local family whose sons and daughters went to sea over multiple generations. The focus will be on three generations of the Pinkham family: Seth Pinkham and Mary Brown Pinkham (a whaling captain and his wife); Malvina Pinkham Marshall and Joseph Marshall (Seth and Mary’s daughter and her whaling master husband, whom she accompanied on whaling voyages); and Helen Marshall (Malvina and Joseph’s daughter, who was born in the Azores and went on whaling voyages with her family). Other family members are represented in images or in relevant artifacts throughout the exhibition as well. Visitors explore stories of adventure, love, melancholy, and loss as evidenced in the family’s letters, clothing, toys, furniture, and portraits. The exhibition features a group of Captain Seth Pinkham’s letters to his family and friends, which were acquired at auction for the NHA in 2016 through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Additional artifacts that will be highlighted in the exhibition are textiles that belonged to Malvina Pinkham Marshall and a scrimshaw-handled jump rope made for Helen Marshall by the second mate on the Aurora. “Having acquired this fantastic set of family papers, we are so pleased to tell the story of the Pinkham family in more depth,” says Michael Harrison, NHA Robyn & John Davis Chief Curator. “It expands on family material we already have, which includes both archival material and artifacts. We’re taking the opportunity to tell the Pinkham’s family story using the broad range of what we have in our collection.” “Dear Absent Ones”: The Seafaring Pinkhams is on view in the NHA’s Nantucket Corner gallery in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, during museum hours, and is included with museum admission.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Passengers by Robert P. Barsanti Two couples ambled out of a Calvin Klein advertisement and down the middle of Crooked Lane. All four were of a certain age and credit score, with the right catalogs coming to their houses and the best stores, placed carefully by marketers, in nearby malls. Both women wore sundresses, sandals, and white wine. The men were in chinos, sweaters, and a hedge fund assurance. I waited behind them, with a pickup bed full of the dead, the fetid, and the rotting, at 11:45 on a Saturday morning. The seconds ticked by at the dump gate and across the universe, but not for the timeless L.L. Bean Weekend Ensemble. I put my hand on the horn and felt ridiculous—I let it rest there. Schoolchildren can spot my truck when I drive by. My truck has driven through winters and sand, so that it mutters and grumbles down the road. The exhaust needed a stop at the mechanic before it got approved for another sticker. Still, I didn’t want to blow the horn. I would think reality and an ancient Toyota should growl them awake from their American Express Points Dreams and wake them up to the dripping reality fifteen yards behind them. Luckily, before disbelief numbed my extremities and dragged me into the hole beneath the car, a white BMW turned the corner and headed at them. The moment shattered like the ice sculpture falling from a balcony; the foursome slipped to the side of the road, and I could proceed to a regularly scheduled meeting in Madaket with the rats and seagulls. This early in the season, we should have a tacit agreement. If the visitors stay in town where the festival tags are in season and the doors are open, we will race about in the rest of the island and finish the preparations. We will clear everything that fell, died, and became waterlogged if they could just stay where there are bricks on the sidewalks and menus in the windows. Then, when the air warms just a bit more, the rest of the island will be ready for its time on Snapchat and Instagram. May crashes into the island. The boats unload an audience prepared for

NANTUCKET

High Tide for Cigars Nantucket is a haven for many things: leisure and fun, sun, and some of the best beaches and restaurants in the country. Something the island has been lacking, though, is a place that offers a wide selection of fine, handmade cigars and accessories. Until now. Open upstairs in the historic 2 Union Street building, just off Main Street behind Ralph Lauren, is Gray Lady Smoke Shop. With the island's largest selection of cigars in every shape and size including Oliva, Ashton, Macanudo and more, Gray Lady Smoke Shop has everything for the cigar aficionado in your life. Handmade in the USA from sustainably harvested rare woods and leathers, their line of Brizard & Co accessories make great gifts (Father’s Day is fast approaching). Ask for recommendations, quantity discounts, cutting and lighting services. If you don’t see your favorite brand, ask and they’ll place a special order for you. Gray Lady Smoke Shop can add a little something different to your next island event with exceptional cigars for gift bags and even a “cigar bar” with one of their experts to guide your guests to a smoke they’ll enjoy. Keep cigars in mind when planning your wedding, parties, or celebration of any size. Stop by Gray Lady Smoke Shop (open weekends till mid-June, then daily) — just look for the large oval sign for 2 Union. You can also visit ackgraylady.com, call them at 508-901-9399, or find them on Facebook and Instagram @ackgraylady.

Have You Been Flocked? 10 Old South Wharf

by Cara Godlesky

lolacompany.com

Have you seen flocks of plastic pink flamingos scattered in front yards across the island? More than just lawn ornaments, they are part of Nantucket New School’s latest fundraiser. The Flamingo Flocking FUNdraiser is a way for participants to surprise their friends and colleagues by sending a dozen pink flamingos to roost on their front lawns. The fundraiser started on April 1 and five flocks of flamingos are available to be placed on unsuspecting participants yards for a donation of $50. The flock remains on the participant’s lawn for two days before the “flock wranglers” come in the dark the night to remove them, or the “flocked” participant can submit a donation and send their flock to someone else. “We were trying to think of a new spring fundraiser. We thought it would be fun to do in April when it’s grey,” said Jon Alden, headmaster of Nantucket New School. “We thought [the pink] would stand out, and we weren’t sure how people would take to it, but it has been really successful.” In fact, it has been so successful that the fundraiser has had more than 150 participants so far, and most of them pass on the flock to other locations. Nantucket New School planned to do the fundraiser for only the month of April, but it was so widely popular, it is still continuing. “We thought it would be something different. Everyone needs something fresh,” said Alden. “It is a way to get families involved, while having it be fun for the students, and more of a community event.” The fundraiser was a way to involve the community and create awareness of Nantucket New School. While doing so, the school raises money for their operating budget. Tuition from students does not cover all the expenses alone so the school had to get creative with methods to raise money. With so many other non-profits on island, they wanted their fundraiser to stand out. Residents, business owners, and even the headmaster himself have been among the “flocked.” Along with them includes Surfing Hydrangea Nursery. “It wasn’t a tremendous surprise because I am a parent of two students at the New School so I knew it was coming my way,” said Craig Beni, founder and president of Surfing Hydrangea Nursery. “Even though I it saw coming, I didn’t know when, so it was indeed a surprise.” To send a flock, email flamingos@nantucketnewschool.org or call Nantucket New School at 508-228-8769. Act now, before the flock flies away!

Red, White, & Rosé Sips of Summer Wine by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits Warmer temperatures, longer beach days, and refreshingly chilled wines...summer is just around the corner, as well as transitioning to easy drinking, every-day-style wines that are light on the palate and the pocket. Summer entertaining, whether at Cisco Beach or your own backyard, doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. The best value wines for summer sipping are often not your usual grape varietal suspects, or at least not from typical wine regions that are foremost in your mind. No need to be concerned about making the wrong selection in this category, however, as I offer a quick list of wines worthy of your attention this time of year. RED, RED WINE (THINK UB40) Keeping with the spirit of this aptly named song, forget about heavy tannic, full-bodied red wines for now. Concentrate on red grape varietals that have a thinner skin and therefore will create a softer, more approachable style wine that will taste even better with a slight chill on them. Don’t be afraid to put your red wine in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes before serving it in order to reduce the temperature of the wine just a few degrees. SIETE RED, RIOJA 2015 (Certified Organic Wine) This crafty wine was conceived combining cultivation and innovation from Tempranillo grapes, with a touch of Garnacha (Grenache) and Mazuelo (aka Carignan). These thin-skinned grapes are the backbone of this picturesque region, while this is typical of what you will find in a blended wine from this region. A beautiful red cherry color invites you to smell the pleasant continued on page 24

May 25-31, 2017

Bringing Color & Creativity to the Grey Lady by Cara Godlesky Over the last few decades, Nantucket transformed from a bustling whaling and fishing community into a nucleus of fine arts, food, culture, and tourism. Once a small, sandy patch that few could locate on a map, Nantucket became a destination and home for artists, politicians, and celebrities. As Nantucket’s economy slowly deviated from depending on fishing, the tourism industry steadily took off. The island received attention from a variety of people and artists, such as Elizabeth Saltonstall, who was nationally recognized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. With a rich historical background, untarnished beaches, and hushed hideaways, Nantucket gives artists the opportunity to be inspired and create. Nantucket’s growing art industry and year-round community sparked the creation of the non-profit Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) in 1945. Now, the AAN provides the island with its largest collection of local art. The AAN aims to encourage and support artists, promote art education and visual arts on the island through youth and adult programs. “An artists association serves as the community center for artistic activity, said Kate Merlini, art teacher of eight years at Nantucket High School. Merlini previously taught at the AAN. “It's a hub of artistic processes and expression, but also a gathering place where people can congregate in the name of art. The AAN offers a wide selection of programs for members and non-members of all ages, including children. Youth programs allow young artists to explore and experiment with new mediums through oil paint classes, pottery wheel sessions and digital painting courses. Young artists can participate in weekly workshops, or sign up for summer art camps. “I want the youth to have the opportunity to do artwork, said Nicci Aguiar, who grew up on Nantucket and now teaches youth art at the AAN. “Even if the kids don’t plan on doing it as a career, it’s good mentally to have

that creativity in life, no matter what they do.â€? Adults can tune their art skills through year-round instructed classes and lectures, or participate in advanced sessions, including printmaking and book or journal binding. “Participating in art can incorporate beauty into your life. It’s asking your brain to think about something differently,â€? said Cecil Barron Jensen, AAN executive director. “Sometimes an artist’s point of view is not only a beautiful thing, but a challenging thing, thinking about the community‌ place you live‌what you see on a daily basis to understand a different point of view.â€? With more than 250 members, the AAN presents an opportunity for the island’s artists to work on their skills in a social environment. In the quiet winter months, members work on artwork while getting to know other local artists. They get to see how others grow and evolve throughout the years. Some members may come and go, however others have been in the AAN for over 50 years. Art can bring the people of the island community together. The AAN not only hosts art classes and provides a social setting for artists, but also holds five Open Art Shows throughout the spring and summer months. These art shows accept fine art submissions from all community members to encourage new artists and locals to showcase their work. “Most of our shows throughout the year are only open to AAN members to show work, but we wanted to preserve an opportunity for islanders who aren’t members to show in art gallery,â€? said Jensen. “We are in the business of encouraging art, sponsoring artists, and we want people to feel like they can be a part of this organization. We also always look for new members to join.â€? One of the AAN’s most popular Open Art Shows is the Artist’s Open and Cellography Show – cell phone photography. The Cellography show is a continued on page 13

“show within a show” and will be held during the Artist’s Open. Artist’s Open contains work from various mediums while the Cellography show will only contain photographs. During the Cellography show, photographers use only their phones to take pictures, then they print them out and hang them for display on an old fashioned clothesline. This will be the seventh consecutive year that the art show will include cellography due to its large participation from artists of all ages. “Most people have a cell phone on them,” said Jack Parsons, a student in the digital photography III program at Nantucket High School. “Taking photographs with cell phones is pretty easy and doesn’t require a lot of extra processes.” As the quality of cell phone cameras rapidly develops, more people are able to take excellent photographs without purchasing and lugging around expensive cameras and equipment. Clip-on camera lenses for cell phones, like fish-eyes, macro, and wide-shot lenses, provide cellographers with similar angles that one would get from an SLR, DSLR, or video camera. “A photographer once said ‘the best photographer is the one who always has their cameras on them,’” said Merrill Mason, photography teacher at Nantucket High School. “I think because we all have our cell phones on us, it’s very simple just to take a photo.” The diverse art programs and events the AAN offers gives Nantucket’s community a place to join together in an inspiring and creative way. Now, 72 years after its founding, the AAN mission to give artists an a chance to show and sell work, to teach art and to conserve Nantucket’s art history still is upheld today. The next Open Art Show, Artist Open and Cellography, will be on display from May 26 to June 3, at Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery located at 19 Washington St. in the Nantucket Cultural District. The AAN will host an opening reception on Friday, May 26 from 6 pm to 8:00 pm. Community artists and AAN members show their work together again during the Plein Air Festival in mid-June. And in September, AAN hosts another Open Art Show called “10x10.” Like its name suggests, everything on the gallery wall is sized 10” by 10.” The deadline to submit artwork for this show is Tuesday, Sept. 5. For more details about AAN programs, Open Art Shows, and AAN membership, contact them at NantucketArts.org.

Meanwhile, the early arrivals look deep into the budding and blooming moors, the dripping lilacs, and the slow breaths of a gentle ocean and sigh contentedly. We have deadlines and places to go: they have put away their watches and have arrived. Nantucket is an island of luxury, and there is no greater luxury than time. For the rich, they have enough money to get away from deadlines, commitments, and 9 AM staff meetings. The job can stay in a briefcase, computer, or on an Assistant’s desk. The children are cared for at the pool or the clubor the lacrosse fields of St. Grottlesex. Dinner waits behind a swinging door and chores drove away in a loaded Toyota Corolla just this morning. Time is a stream they have just stepped out of. They can lie on the sand until their socks dry. The rest of us are braced against some very slippery rocks in the middle of that stream. Time comes in hours and invoices, measured and cut. Our jobs beep at us during coffee and ring during dinner. Meals, children, chores, and everything else builds in a current and washes towards, then passes, then drifts away from us. We measure our lives in voicemail and gas receipts. We drive from job site to Marine Home Center, keeping our debit cards in the black and the gas gauge on red. And we are fooling ourselves. The rich are different from you and me because they live Somewhere Else. And Somewhere Else doesn’t have red-tailed hawks turning in the afternoon sun, beach grass and beach plums waltzing to the winds, and the faraway glimmer of sunlight on ocean. Somewhere Else has six lane highways, Starbucks, and traffic on the threes. When they come to the island, they know they have arrived. Conversely when we go to the mainland, we realize that we have left. At 11:45 on Saturday morning, the foursome didn’t have anywhere to go because they were already there. Their cars stayed behind their hedges. They could walk and breathe the sea air. They could notice the trees, the grass, and all of the other things that go whisking past my peripheral vision as I keep my eyes on the road and my hands upon the wheel. We are an island for walking. We have parks and paths and sidewalks and a thousand interesting things to see if you pass by one foot at a time. You can peek in windows, look down alleyways, and stare off into the distance at some godforsaken idiotic red Sputnik sculpture plunked down in the middle of a backyard. One of the curses of the new millennium is the destination. We travel in order to ignore so as to arrive unchanged and ready for the dream. We put iPad screens in the back seats of cars so nobody has to look out the window. If we go from destination to destination, we can go from one stage to another stage without getting muddy in the street. Everything is a performance for us to witness; nothing is boring nor real nor not for us. Nantucket is a luxury and there is no greater luxury than time. But we are all parceled out a measured and mysterious measure from that stream. The one thing we have more than the visitors is time on-island. Perhaps we should notice it more (and get out of the middle of the road).

Today the LLNF boasts a research and education program preserving the landscape as a “Living Laboratory”’ for all ages to enjoy. The property is open to the public (sun up to sun down) which boasts a walking trail with a short and long loop. Programming carries on for all ages continuing Linda Loring’s original vision of opening the natural world for all to enjoy and explore. Recently The Nature Conservancy donated an additional 18 acres of land to the LLNF bringing the total acreage up to 104. The landscapes found there include the globally rare sandplain grassland and heathland communities which are home to a number of species listed by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. There are vernal pools, shrub swamps, and pine forests. LLNF is considered a wildlife preserve where ground nesting birds such as Northern Harriers, and Eastern Towhees nest every year. The Osprey pole is visible from the office windows and is monitored by staff and visitors alike every season for hatch and fledgling success. Hundreds of school children come through on field trips, nature walks, and other science programming. Vistas of Long Pond and the various wading ducks can be seen from the LLNF offices as well as along the walking trail. The LLNF Story Walk has been a popular stop for families of all ages, particularly the preschool set. These stories are also translated into Spanish ensuring that more of the Nantucket community can enjoy nature at their comfort level. In additional to the educational programming, the LLNF boasts a research program where staff scientists as well as visiting researchers investigate all aspects of biodiversity on the island, including plant phenology, climate change, precipitation, snake diversity, deer browse impacts, seed dispersal, and more. All of the research has some outreach component bringing the science to the public via direct engagement, observation, or public talks. How can you enjoy this gem of a Nantucket property? Head out to 110 eel Point Rd. There is a large parking lot, a kiosk at the head of the trail with maps and information, and an office that has bathroom facilities and a place to fill up water bottles. See all of the programming available at www.llnf.org. continued on page 23

freshness of this ready to drink wine. On the palate, this wine is young and fleshy, with moderate acidity and non-apparent alcohol. Perfect pairing with your favorite gourmet pizza of choice!

A Nantucket Tradition for 83 Years

Now Open for the 2017 Season!

MAISON L’ENVOYE MORGON ‘CÔTE DU PY’ 2015 This beautiful wine whose name translates to House of the Messenger sings of its origins from the Beaujolais region of France. Made from 100% Gamay Noir (a close relative of Pinot Noir), this small production wine comes from not only one of the top CRUS (designated classifications) of this region, but also from the most-famed single vineyard in the area. Raspberry, dark red fruit characters on the nose with a hint of orange rind, the deeply layered palate is smooth and seamless. It is so refreshing and tasty, it makes you feel as if you are drinking grape Kool-Aid for adults.

Breakfast Daily, 6am-2pm Sunday, 7am-1pm

Lunch Mon-Sat, 11am-2pm

WHITE WINE IN THE SUN When you mention summer sippers, most people would naturally think of a crisp, delightful white wine. They pair well with afternoon snacks and pretty much any seafood combo platter you could ever think of. Moderate to high acidity with a blast of ripe fruit, no oak and a lengthy finish - sounds like a home run of a wine for these days.

VIÑA CASABLANCA, ‘NIMBUS’ SAUVIGNON BLANC, VALLE DE CASABLANCA, CHILE 2015 Named Nimbus in reference to the clouds that cover the valleys of Chile, this Sauvignon Blanc comes from the western most part of the cool climate Casablanca Valley. The granite soil where the grapes are grown produces a similar mineral component that is often found in the white wines of the Sancerre region of France. Hints of grapefruit and passionfruit are accompanied by intense acidity, mineral notes and long, persistent finish. This wine is sure to quench any thirst created by a long day on the water. continued on page 25

MARCHESI DI BAROLO GAVI, ITALY 2015 The historic winery is an icon in the Barolo village of Piedmont, Italy, having dated back hundreds of years as wine growers and producers. Small amounts of white wine are made in this well-known red wine region. Flavors of golden apple, almonds and chamomile, the apparent acidity on this wine is balanced with the weight and texture also found on the palate. This wine made from 100% Cortese is ideal for salads, light pasta dishes and mild cheeses. SAVING THE BEST WINE FOR LAST Nantucket’s favorite sip of summer is undoubtedly Rosé. And what better way to ease on into the summer than with a couple of selections that stand out from the crowd in this category. #LOU BY CHATEAU PEYRASSOL, CÔTES DE PROVENCE 2016 Most avid rosé drinkers are familiar with Chateau Peyrassol’s more gastronomic wine, along with their every day slightly fruitier styled Commanderie de Peyrassol. Now they have available their newest offering named #LOU. Not only is it a screw-top for easy access, the pedigree of this wine is apparent in it’s moderate acidity, non-overpowering fruit characteristics and ease of drinking at the beach on a hot summer’s day. HUBER ZWIEGELT ROSÉ, TRAISENTHAL, AUSTRIA 2015 For a wine selection off the beaten path, look no further than Austria for your next rosé adventure. Winemaker Markus Huber is paving the way not only for the success and acknowledgement of his family’s winery, but also to make known the incredible wines of the not-so-well-known, very small wine region of which he hails. This strawberry, slightly watermelon scented wine is made from the grape Zwiegelt. This wine never ceases to impress even the toughest of rosé connoisseurs. A quick list such as this will be sure to guide you in the right direction (in wine, at least!) for getting your summer celebratory wines in order just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Here’s to toasting the red, white and pink!

Featured Restaurant:

Top Takeout Options on Nantucket Memorial Day Weekend on Nantucket can be busy and downtown full of boisterous partiers, so locals know that takeout is a good way to avoid the throngs and get a delicious meal whether you’re heading to the beach for a picnic, out on a boat, or just going home after a long day at work. Here are some of our staff favorites for fast food island-style and full meals ready to heat and eat.

Staff Favorites for dinner include: Smoked Salmon Taco: This dish is far from your average taco, with smoked salmon in a thin potato pancake, with salty capers, zesty lemon cream cheese, and fresh romaine. Bistro Shrimp: Perfectly cooked jumbo shrimp topped with a cool and fruity mango relish over a tangle of rice noodles and veg in red curry sauce. 29 Centre Street • 508-228-8470 • nantucketbistro.com

Bartlett’s Farm Kitchen - Bartlett’s has you covered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with grab and go sandwiches, dips, dinners, salads, soups, sides, and desserts. With Chef Neil Hudson at the helm and M.J. Mojer beside him, their food is restaurant quality! Just steps from the kitchen cases, you’ll find soft drinks and wine, plus chips and fresh fruit to complete your meal. Our staff favorites are the Curried Chicken Salad: with sweet pops of raisins it goes great spooned on top of bagel chips with a refreshing Spindrift seltzer to wash it down. Another tasty choice is the crunchy Raw Salad and fresh Codfish Cakes (which freeze well for a day you can’t get to the farm). 33 Bartlett Farm Road • 508-228-9403 • bartlettsfarm.com

Easy Street Cantina - Another in-town takeout restaurant with plenty of indoor seating, a great patio, or take it to go! Their location is also perfect if you’ve just arrived on the SSA ferry or are about to depart and don’t want boat food. Their handbreaded fresh seafood is always a good choice, and they have specials and kidfriendly food, too. Staff favorites: Basil Chicken Salad Wrap is herby and fresh, perfect for a summer picnic. Fresh and tasty Fish Tacos are available by the box for a group. Their Grand Slamwich is the best breakfast on a bun you’ve ever had: bacon, sausage, ham, egg, & cheese—and it’s under 10 bucks and served all day! 2 Broad Street • 508-228-5418 • easystreetcantina.com

Centre Street Bistro - Husband and wife owners and chefs, Ruth and Tim Pitts, serve sensational dishes year-round. Convenient if you are already in town and well worth fighting the traffic if you aren’t, this sit-down restaurant is very popular with locals for takeout. Drive in with a friend so you don’t have to park, or walk there and savor your meal in one of Nantucket’s pocket parks! Staff Favorites for lunch include: CSB’s BLT: best on the island with thick, crisp bacon and juicy tomatoes rolled in a flour tortilla with parmigiana aioli. Polenta Crostini: The light mixed greens pair remarkably with the rich and satisfying polenta, marinated tomato, goat cheese, and basil oil.

Siam to Go - Tucked in the Nantucket Ice rink, here you can get tasty Thai takeout without worrying about where you’ll park. They have vegan & glutenfree options available upon request, and will adjust the heat of a dish to suit your taste. Staff favorites: The Summer Fresh Rolls are light and crisp, perfect for the warm days ahead and crunchy, sweet, and moist Orange Chicken with Fried Rice is delicious. Drunken Noodles with fresh chili, onion, mushroom, carrot, bell pepper, broccoli, bok choy, baby corn, and spicy sauce is another great choice. 10 Backus Ln (off Surfside Rd) • 508-228-7426 • siamtogonantucket.com Crosswinds - Located at the airport, there’s plenty of parking for a quick in and out to grab your takeout at reasonable prices. It’s true that they’ll “leave your pockets full and your spirits soaring.” Kids love to watch the planes take off and land

from their back patio. Staff favorites: Tuesday nights their Steakhouse Sizzle can’t be beat for $12.95. The Orecchiette Pasta with pancetta, button mushrooms, baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil in a chipotle cream sauce is worth the calorie splurge! We have a staffer who goes once a week for their Denver Omelette and banter with Larry. Nantucket Airport • 508-228-6005 • crosswindsnantucket.com Sophie T’s - A Nantucket staple yearround and especially when the busy days of summer arrive! Eat-in or take-out, they have so much more than pizza; try their hearty salads, homemade soups, or Italian entrees. Staff favorites: Craving an off-island fast food burger? The ACK Mack Pizza with ground beef, American cheese, pickles, onions, special sauce, and sesame seed crust hits the spot. Their Greek Pizza is a vegetarian treat, and their Philly Style Cheese Steak is closest we’ve found on-island to the real thing! 7 Daves Street • 508-325-6265 sophietspizza.com Nantucket Bake Shop - Located mid-island, this iconic island bakery is good for a quick breakfast or picking up additions to your meal or dessert. Jay’s donuts (made fresh in the wee hours of the morning) sell out fast, so go early to get your Boston Creme. Staff favorite: Any of their Donuts; their Cheese Straws to serve with appetizers and a glass of wine, Magee’s fabulous fresh Fruit Tarts will be the highlight of any party. We can’t forget their authentic Portuguese Bread: the original recipe and best on the island! 17-1/2 Old South Road • 508-228-2797 • nantucketbakeshop.com Faregrounds - There’s plenty of parking at this mid-island year-round spot with eat-in and takeout options. Takeout orders can be picked up at the hostess stand, avoiding the bustling bar area (also a great spot for a quick lunch). Staff favorites: The Gray Lady Filet sandwich is delicious and huge, the cod is coated in Cisco’s Gray Lady beer batter, and we love the Steak & Cheese served as a rollup instead of the hoagie, you get more of the meat and cheese flavor as opposed to bread. Always substitute sweet potato fries here, they’re terrific! If you decide to eat-in at Faregrounds, they have all-you-can-eat and early bird specials every night. 27 Fairgounds Road • 508-228-4095 • thefaregrounds.com
