Island Museums Are Preparing to Reopen
July 2-15, 2020

by C. Oscar Olson Coming to terms with and adjusting to the reality of now has not been easy for anybody. Life is slowly returning to normal, though slower still here on Nantucket than usual, and with good reason. With weather warming and the population growing, many are wondering what to do, where to go, and how to do it safely. The island’s rich history, unique ecosystems, and numerous notable people from the past are brought together by curators in a surprising number of marvelous museums for such a small place. They are a draw for many to cross the Sound every year, and we hope that soon this summer will be no exception. The minds behind these essential island institutions have been working tirelessly to put plans in place that work for everybody so they can finally open their doors and welcome the public back inside. We’re happy to say that for some of them the wait may be close to over. Museums across the state have been waiting patiently for Phase 3 of Governor Baker’s plan to begin (at press time that date is July 6). With proper cleaning and safety measures in place, they will once again be able to open and operate. Locations like the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, Nantucket Historical Association’s prized Whaling Museum, and the Maria Mitchell Association’s museums and science centers are hopefully just weeks away from finally unlocking the doors and welcoming visitors. Jascin Finger, Deputy Director at the MMA, remains optimistic. “The MMA is hard at work preparing for a limited reopening. We do not have all the information yet about the state's expectations, as that comes at the beginning of July should it roll out as hoped for, but we have been preparing ourselves with supplies, new thoughts on how we might open some of our sites in a limited capacity, and other possible offerings.” Since the beginning of this pandemic, flexibility has been a crucial aspect of moving forward.

Red, white and blue, With justice for all. Red, white and blue, Represents you and I, Red, white and blue Happy 4th of July.
Independence day feels a little different this year. The country is divided. It seems as though you’re either blue or red with no room for indecision. In the garden things are much different. My borage is still blue, and my tomatoes will be red, but there are colors between. My summer and winter squash are a brilliant yellow. The Cosmos and Calendula are flamingo pink and fire orange. Broccoli of violet and beans of scarlet. I have sunflowers that are the color of a Madaket sunset, and peas that are as green as an Irish summer. There is diversity, there is middle ground, there is understanding and support. My “three sisters” bed is exploding with companionship. No plant is the same, but they all work together for the greater good. If only a country was as easily run as a garden is to manage. continued on page 12

Drive-In Dreams by C. Oscar Olson
For many of us, summertime blockbusters are a longstanding seasonal treat and tradition. There’s something exciting about checking showtimes, lining up, and sitting down with your friends, family, and popcorn to take in the newest blockbuster. The Nantucket Dreamland has been part of this pastime for almost 100 years. This summer has been a bit different, though: Massachusetts residents have been stuck with streaming since mid-March, leaving lots of us longing for the big screen. Well, the wait is over and the show is about to start, because the Dreamland Drive-in is about to begin. Joe Hale, the theater’s executive director, recalls a March 12th meeting with the Dreamland board of directors. Another busy season would soon be upon us, and they were excitedly planning the summer’s cinema events. “We were moving along at 70mph, then five days later, on March 17th, all of our planning came to an abrupt halt. Everything had stopped.” Revenue ceased, programming was cancelled, The Dreamland was closed and know one knew for how long. A call was quickly convened and board member Denice Kronau had a thought: What about a drive-in? "That comment spurred us to action,” recalls Hale, “but we had no money to pay for a drive-in, if it could even be created on Nantucket.” He suggested a crowd funding campaign. “Maybe the community would help us make this dream a reality?” Nantucket’s visitors and residents all share a deep love for this island and its traditions. When the idea for the drive-in was hatched in early March, organizers of the non-profit cinema and members of the board weren’t sure what to expect. To everyone’s shock, the nearly $140,000 goal was not only met but exceeded in less than 6 days, and the donations are still coming in. The Dreamland is an institution with a rich and storied history. Originally constructed in 1832 as a Quaker meetinghouse, the building was also used to host continued on page 15

Ahh, 1970... seems so long ago with so many adventures and three children between then and now... the story really begins in 1968, a ‘Sconset Girl working as hostess at the Mad Hatter meets Missouri bouy bartending a the Harbor House. Who would expect this summer romance to lead to an “I do” at the Siasconset Chapel in July 1970? My father, a widower, was thrilled to have the wedding on Nantucket, because most of his friends that he had grown up with summered on-island. We were lucky because both of us had made friends during the previous two years with people who worked and lived on Nantucket in the summer or who vacationed here, so it was a happy medium of guests. I guess some of the memories are that there were no Flowers on Chestnut creations, so my dad’s friend Mary Sarg Murphy cut and arranged all the table flowers. Nantucket Bake Shop had recently opened and a three-tier wedding cake with dividers had to have directions sent from the mainland. There was the question of leaving the chapel to drive to Sankaty Head Golf Club, and the choices were a taxi, Richard Lewis’ “Limo,” or a horse and carriage (which was iffy). We had a neighbor who owned a Rolls Royce that he brought specially to the island for the occasion. The weather cooperated, and the ceremony and reception went off without serious problems. My mother-in-law’s luggage never made it to the island, but hey, it was Nantucket! One of my husband’s favorite bits of memorabilia is the receipt for our wedding night at the Overlook Hotel: we stayed there for their famous pancakes, and the receipt is for $24. Getting married on Nantucket in 1970 did have its perks!

The Game of Hope
July 2-15, 2020
by Robert P. Barsanti The seventh hole at the Sconset Golf Club rumbles down hill, over an irrigation ditch and up to a shaggy green for 150 yards. In the fog of history, you can see some smart fellow in plus fours swinging a niblick and dropping a ball, with a mud spatter, onto the green. So I, with 21 century irons, scientifically designed golf balls, and the finest in you tube training, delivered the first ball into the bushes. Then the second ball into the creek. Then I took out my lucky ball, the one that has sat in the bottom of my bag and only appears on the putting green. I addressed it, swung, delivered it into the bushes and drained every last drop of luck from the ball. I think. If someone would like to find my lucky golf ball, it has a Nike Swoosh, the number three and the letter B written onto its dots. It may also still have a few remaining prayers and some voodoo left inside. I wish you the best of luck. I am not a good golfer. I have made my peace with the topped drives, six inch long divots, and shanks of my life. I have removed myself from the polite rules of golf as I walk, alone, around the loop and hit until I am happy. Alas, I cannot remove myself from the rules of physics, which are immutable and unforgiving for the incompetent golfer. They decree that some balls, no matter how often they have been blessed and invoked, are going to be lost until the Boy Scouts go hunting in November. Golf is a game of hope, not of experience. If it were, we would leave the sticks behind and just walk around a field with three friends and cold beverages. But, we come to the clubhouse, cash in hand, and buy a new sleeve of balls in the hope and expectation that, of the multitudes within me, today Jack Nicklaus would answer the bell and strap on a glove. Hope is a fine thing, maybe the best thing, but unless you are in Shawshank Prison, it can lead you out into the middle of a tick infested field in search of a #3 continued on page 12

ISLAND MEMORIES: NANTUCKET IN 1970
My Introduction to Nantucket Island a reminiscence by Jed Lyons
I graduated from Barrington Consolidated High School in the spring of 1970. Five friends and I decided we would all meet on Nantucket that June for a reunion. None of us had ever been there. I was inspired by a high school English teacher named Charles White who got me interested in literature. I loved Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and wanted to see the island. I hitchhiked from Barrington, located about 50 miles northwest of Chicago, to Pittsburgh, then to New York and on to Concord, MA, where I camped out at Walden Pond for a few days. I caught a ride to Woods Hole and jumped on a night ferry. The trip cost $4.75 one way. We steamed through heavy fog and pitch black waters. The ferry ride was exactly what I had hoped for: a magical trip to another realm. At the dock, my four friends were waiting, accompanied by a case of Ripple wine. After a long night of carousing, we found places to sleep, including a house where a large party was going late into the night. Located at 8 North Water Street, it was owned by a George Harrington whom, we learned, had a well-earned reputation as a party giver. We never saw him again. We had breakfast at the Sandpiper for one dollar apiece with tip and then rode our rental bikes out to Surfside, where we spent the day. At night, we pitched tents on the beach near the airport, made a fire and cooked hot dogs for dinner. We played pool and listened to live music at Preston’s Airport Lounge until it closed. So it went for four glorious days in June, 1970. Sitting on benches in front of the Hub, eating ice cream cones from the Confectionary, drinking beer at the bar of the Opera House restaurant, hitchhiking out to ‘Sconset and meeting retired New York actors at the Moby Dick Inn (now the Summer House). It had been a favorite of the New York theater crowd for decades. The young people on the island that summer were dressed the same in bellbottom blue jeans, braided string or rope belts, tee shirts, many head bands. It was a fun, frolicking crowd of kids from all over the country. I returned to Nantucket every summer for ten years, eventually spending one very long winter there in 1974-75 after college. I worked many summers as a gardener for a wonderful lady named Mary Armstrong. Mary was a fixture on the island and led many civic causes and activities before she died. I drop by her house on Liberty Street every time I visit now to pay my respects to her granddaughter, who was a small child when I worked there over 40 years ago. As part of our anniversary celebration, we are publishing memories of our island in 1970 that readers have shared with us. A Secret Garden Now Open to the Public
Page 9
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation You may have noticed, driving up Polpis Road or riding along the bike path towards ‘Sconset, a unique red pergola along the road flanked on either side by two stone lions. Once marking the entry to a private yard and secret garden, now these sentinels are welcoming spirits to a newly restored island oasis. In 2017, the Nantucket Land Bank (NLB) acquired what was the Reyes property at 219 and 231 Polpis Rd. The NLB has worked to restore the property and create a park on the almost 16-acre parcel. The property, now officially known as Reyes Pond, consists of roughly an acre of upland encircled by various wetlands, including a man-made pond as well as a variety of specimen trees from around the world. Jose and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Reyes owned the property and designed the grounds during the 1950s and 60s to be a private retreat with landscape reminiscent of places they had lived and travelled. According to Rachael Freeman, Environmental Coordinator with the NLB, Betty was the primary architect of the landscape. As Freeman said, “It was her ethos in life to love nature.” Her garden and yard became her oasis where she could revisit her travels. Mrs. Reyes started this collection as an homage to her travels through Asia. Her husband, Jose Reyes of Nantucket Lightship Basket fame, was a native of the Philippines, where they lived in the early years of their marriage. As she built her botanical paradise, she selected specimens she may have seen in Japan or the Philippines. Some people collect souvenirs and thimbles, but Reyes planted species in her yard from the region she loved. Reyes Pond is now open to the public and can be viewed as a botanic garden with the specimen trees labeled with species information and country of origin. These trees are wonders to behold, not spindly little Nantucketstunted twigs, but large, mature, healthy trees; a testament to the care Betty Reyes gave her collection. One of the first trees that caught my eye is the showstopper, Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica purpurea). The glorious purple/deep red color of the foliage at this time of year is a striking contrast to the lush green surroundings. A native of Europe, this tree defies the Nantucket odds and towers at 40 feet tall or more. Copper Beech is a rounded spreading tree boasting red foliage in the spring that turns deep purple/green in summer and then bronzed for autumn. continued on page 16

As they enter their 75th year in business, Murray’s Toggery Shop, the iconic Nantucket store at 62 Main Street and home of the original Nantucket Reds collection, has just completed a major renovation to transform the ladies’ and children’s departments. The renovation, which began at the beginning of January and was initially delayed due to closures associated with the pandemic, is now finished. Updates include both the upstairs and downstairs spaces. The first floor now offers merchandise spaces only, and all the departments have larger and more updated dressing rooms. The second floor now also offers a new year-round sale space with great discounts, along with shop offices. From the moment customers enter the ladies’ department, they will notice a brighter, modernized, shoppable space with high-quality clothing, shoes, and other accessories for women and children. New lighting, flooring, and fixtures highlight the irresistible modern, fashionable items. New and treasured brands featured in Murray’s Toggery Shop include: Sail to Sable, Frances Valentine, Vineyard Vines, Mahi Gold, Shoshanna, St. James, Jack Rogers, Birkenstock, Persifor, Beyond Yoga, Gal Meets Glam, Splendid, NYDI, Lele Sadoughi, and, of course, their very own Nantucket Reds Collection. Another benchmark for 2020 is that Murray’s is entering a new generation of family ownership. Trish Bridier and John Murray have retired, and Andrew Bridier, Matt Bridier, Lauren Murray, and Greg Murray, their children, have taken over the business. Murray’s Toggery Shop invites its customers to shop daily, from 10 am to 6 pm Monday-Saturday and from noon to 4 pm on Sundays. While shopping, masks must be worn at all times and distancing guidelines of 6 feet are followed. For those who prefer contactless shopping options, Murray’s is still offering curbside pick up and free local delivery. Follow them at @ackreds on Instagram or visit nantucketreds.com for other exciting updates.

Sanitization stations have been installed throughout the Whaling Museum to help with the process in addition to improved air filtration. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum is also ready for visitors with sanitization stations and social distance spacing in place. Through the implementation of extended hours, scheduled tours, and strenuous sanitization, the NHA is confident museumgoers will enjoy touch-free tours like never before. In addition, hours at the Whaling Museum will be extended, including 8 am openings reserved for seniors. The museum is even continuing their winterseason free admission. Before we all locked ourselves inside, the NHA was hard at work on another project. Part of the museum has been transformed in to a Discovery Center for children to enjoy, featuring crafts and games as well several new exhibitions throughout the building. The Lightship Basket Museum is ready with an interesting new juxtaposition: this exhibit will compare 200-year-old baskets made on lightships with those made during our recent quarantine. And if you think we’ve been alone during these difficult times, Astronaut Dan Bursh might have some words for you. Baskets he made during his solitary time on the International Space Station will also be on exhibit. Another idea being embraced locally is going virtual by bringing the experiences online. Some locations had tours in place on their websites long before the pandemic, while others are meeting those new needs today. Since the beginning of June, the MMA has been offering their Science Speaker Series online. It happens Wednesday nights at 7pm and people can register online,” explains MMA’s Jascin Finger, “it is on Zoom and is free to the public.” When gathering indoors isn’t yet fully embraced, we’re grateful for all of the opportunities out-of-doors on Nantucket. “We hope to have some walks as we typically offer in the summer,” says Finger, “perhaps some marine walks, bird walks, and perhaps later things like ‘Meet the Animals,’ constellation tours, and other potential options.” There are countless outdoor properties steeped in history that are still free to visit as well. “Throughout this crisis, we remind visitors that they are encouraged to enjoy the peace and tranquility found at many of the historic properties, such as the beautiful gardens of Hadwen House and Greater Light, or the open spaces by the Old Mill and Oldest House,” says the NHA’s Ashley Santos. “Public outdoor programs, many at the historic sites, will ramp up once permitting allows. These will include creative uses of the normally fallow grounds, with performances and presentations.” Most the museums’ annual donation drives have either been cancelled or postponed, while other have gone virtual as well. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum is moving forward with their annual Baskets and Bubbly Champagne luncheon, “Sea Nantucket Baskets and Bubbly 2020,” and this year the auction will be online. The event begins on August 1 and closes the 9. Visit their website at nantucketlightshipbasketmuseum.org for details on how to buy tickets. A donation to any and all of our island’s museums ensures their work will continue moving forward. Shopping at the museums’ online gift shops like nantucketmuseumshop.org will help them work toward that same goal. Some gift shops, like The Whaling Museum’s, remain open for convenient curbside pickup of your purchase. NHA Executive Director James Russell puts it best: “Underscoring all the above is the firm belief that cultural institutions like the NHA can be places of healing during a time of crisis. We are fortunate to have large open indoor spaces, and the concept of ‘seeing-not-touching’ is widely understood when visiting a museum. Providing a sanctuary is important this year, particularly as other indoor entertainment options are limited.” Though island museums are optimistic about opening in the near future, it is important to bear in mind that the situation is fluid. Situations could change in any direction at any time, but we remain hopeful that we are on the right path. All of these essential parts of the island’s identity are not for profit ventures, and they are all being challenged financially. As one of Nantucket’s oldest non-profits, the Maria Mitchell Association has established the 2020 Emergency Resiliency Fund at mariamitchell.org and held an innovative “Wish Upon a Star” fundraiser with a very practical and hard-to-find prize. Your support at any level will have an imediate impact on their staff, animals, research, and facilities.

Red, White, & Basil from page 4
It’s been a busy couple weeks in the garden. Battling pests with organic practices can be difficult, but the pay out is well worth the extra effort. I’ve had an infestation of the striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum). They’re a real nuisance. They feed on roots, stems, foliage, and flower, which is terrible, but the real problem is they bring the potential for bacterial wilt. There is a bacteria that is stored in the intestinal tract of the beetle, and once it's established, the damage is fierce. This bacteria prevents the plants from receiving nutrients and water from its stems – this can kill a plant in as little as a week. If you see these tiny, yellow bugs with three black stripes down their back, you need to come up with a plan. I’ve been trialing a few organic deterrents. First, I found a yellow bowl. It has to be yellow because that's the color of the squash or cucumber bloom they want to eat. I then filled it up with water and soap and placed it in the garden – this was fairly successful in attracting and subsequently drowning a few cucumber beetles. It wasn’t enough though. While I was considering other options, I hand-picked about 30 more off the plants. You have to be quick though. They have this defense mechanism where they just drop off the plant and turn upside down on the soil. They’re really hard to see at that point. It’s a crafty way of surviving. After about an hour of picking these little pests off, I decided to push the easy button and buy some Neem oil. Neem oil is a 3-in-1 product that is approved for organic gardening. It’s an insecticide, fungicide, and disease control all in one. I still try to use it sparingly, and I never spray the blooms. I don’t want any to get on the bees or pollinators of any kind. I’ve heard of other organic methods, but haven’t tried them myself. You could use row covers, a hay mulch, or even try a trap crop if you have enough room. A trap crop is a crop that you are sowing just to sacrifice to the beetle so it doesn’t attack the crops you want to harvest. Beetles have preferences too and I’ve heard that Baby Blue Hubbard is the perfect option for a trap crop. It is less susceptible to bacterial wilt and is a hardy variety that can withstand some beetle bites. Plus, the cucumber beetles love it. It’s a good idea to plant these trap crops out earlier than your main crop in order to lure the beetles to the correct spot. You do need plenty of space to use this method, hence why I haven’t tried it myself. I’ve put my eggs in the Neem oil basket and hope it works out for me. My squashes, cucumber, and zucchini are all vigorous and healthy, so I know they can handle some defoliation without severely hindering the harvest. Speaking of harvests, my Genovese Basil was harvested today. I had sown tons of seeds back in April in hopes that I could make my own pesto and freeze it to have through the winter. Today was my first attempt and it went really well. The weather had been very dry and basil can go a bit woody if not watered enough.
The Game of Hope from page 7
Nike Swoosh. We hope that the world will work out better. We hope that racism and prejudice will go the way of the Dodo. We hope to give the world a Coke and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, but hope is passive. When we hope, we look to the skies and ask for the help that we can’t somehow make for ourselves. My mother, never one to shy away from the barnyard, encouraged me to weigh hope in one hand with something warmer in the other, and figure out which one filled up first. Hope fueled Andy Dufresne’s scraping; long-term energy is the best use of Hope. Hope should lead me to a driving range every afternoon, a lesson on Wednesdays, and the equanimity to accept bad shots and the rules of Golf. A khaki hope should get you up, make your bed, and get you working on bringing down that rubber tree plant. Hope isn’t magic. And we live in a world, a nation, and an island dedicated to magical thinking. Unmoored of reality and science, we look to hope as our final refuge against action. When I stand on the seventh hole, I am hoping for the ball to land on the green. Hope needs to overcome the laws of both physics and incompetence in order to somehow bring that landing to pass. Similarly, when people, firm in their personal liberty and rights to ice cream, walk around the Stop and Shop without a mask, they have called on special spell to protect them (and everyone else) from biology. If you believe in magic, you believe that you are the special one with a lightning bolt on your forehead. Through good works, good breeding, or plain old

I wanted to get in front of that issue, so I harvested about half of my stock. The kitchen was overrun with the smell of summer. Basil leaves everywhere. The children in the house did the old Mickey Mouse trick of floating through the air on the wings of a delicious scent. Making pesto is so easy! Just add your basil to a food processor, then add olive oil, lemon juice, walnuts, garlic cloves, salt, and some freshly grated parmesan cheese. Naturally, we had pesto pasta with roasted tomatoes that were marinated in balsamic vinegar and oil. It was a hit. I always try to roast my tomatoes when cooking with them. It adds another dimension to their flavor. Don’t get me wrong, tomatoes are delicious regardless of how they’re prepared, but have you ever listened to an orchestra from behind closed doors? Everything sounds really nice, but throw open those doors by roasting your tomatoes, and you can experience every note of every instrument, played to perfection. Bravo maestro! While I was in my own little world, listening to my tomato orchestra, I noticed that my garlic had scapes on them. Garlic scapes are the bloom of a garlic bulb. They almost look like a coiled snake that just had a mid afternoon snack. There is a little bulge in the stalk of the scape that will eventually climb though and bloom. Don’t wait that long though. When you see the scapes, it’s a good indication that your garlic is just about ready to harvest. Naturally, I was excited and harvested the scapes. This was all very convenient timing as I was feeling like Emril in the kitchen. Bam! Garlic scape pesto. I have no self control when it comes to delicious food that I’ve grown in my own backyard. I had to show it off. We packed up the kids, grabbed some sourdough from Born and Bread and we were off to Mimi’s house. Upon arrival, I asked my mom to preheat the oven. We sliced some more tomatoes, grated some parmesan, and Bam! Garlic scape bruschetta. The garlicky flavor, the velvety texture, the sweet bite of the roasted tomatoes in balsamic vinegar and of course, the satisfying crunch of Born and Bread’s pain au levain. Anyone have a cigarette? All joking aside, you won’t find me much happier than when I’m on this Grey Lady surrounded by food, family, and friendship. While the rest of the evening was spent watching the sunset, sipping a big band pinot noir from Oregon and enjoying the kids, I began to think about all the other home gardeners on our little island. We’re moving into a time of year when the fruits of our labor have never tasted sweeter, and it reminds me that hard work does pay off. Perseverance and persistence are paramount to any goal. Whether we’re electing leaders, battling a pandemic, fighting social injustice, or just in an all out war with the wretched cucumber beetle, the principles for success are the same. Stay focused and never give up. Aaliyah said it best, “If at first you don’t succeed (first you don’t succeed), dust yourself off and try again, you can dust it off and try again, try again.” Happy 4th Nantucket!
good thoughts, you have magic and everyone else is a muggle. The world owes you a first class red seat, beyond the velvet rope, along with the enthusiastic thanks of a grateful nation—because you have been blessed with magic. When you replace action with magic, you are bound to be disappointed in the silence of the gods, no matter how many golf balls you tee up. God only speaks in math. The math is not good. It doesn’t matter if the Hedge Funders invite you to their cocktail parties, support your candidacy with checks, and employ your best friend with a dump truck. A winter storm is coming that will flatten the Sconset Bluffs. It doesn’t matter that you had to come home from prep school early and have been sitting alone all spring, the house party is going to kill people. It doesn’t matter that you need to make hay while the sun shines, the math says that the hay isn’t coming in this year. Hope in one hand… The math bellows. The island is shifting under our feet. The seals, the jelly fish, the sharks have arrived on a wave of climate change. The waves are sweeping Madaket and Sconset back into the sand bars, which will soon be sprinkled with thousands of lost golf balls. The virus has removed tens of thousands of tourists from the island this year, and perhaps, forever. We can clap our hands over our ears and hope that magic will some how save us. Or we can do the math. Survival and success require humility and hope. We aren’t immune to the laws of nature, we have just landed some place where those laws come with schools of bluefish, mudflats full of clams, and glorious sunsets. Faced with a world that has changed under and over us, we can put out one hand for all of wishes and accept the warm earthy gift in the other. Or, we can put both of our hands to work.

meetings in support of the abolition of slavery. It was a straw hat factory, and in 1880 it was converted in to a skating rink. In those days, the building was known as The Atlantic Hall. In 1883, it was dismantled and moved, piece by piece, to Brant Point where it was put back together and transformed in to the Nantucket Hotel. The hotel sold in 1905, and a year later it was once again ferried across the harbor to where it stands today. The building’s life as an entertainment venue began in 1906 when it was reopened as Smith and Blanchard’s Moving Picture Show. Finally dubbed The Dreamland in 1911, the newly named venue not only showed the newest movies, it also hosted various Vaudeville entertainment acts. The theater stood proudly as Nantucket’s primary entertainment venue for more than 80 years. Of course, the decades took their toll on the much-loved building, and in 2007 the building was purchased one last time by the non-profit Dreamland Foundation and they quickly went to work with restoration. With help from the endless generosity of private donors, the theater was reinvented for the last time as a world-class performing arts center and, following a complete renovation, opened its doors in June of 2012. This new day in Dreamland history is projected to begin soon at 7 Nobadeer Farm Road. They’ll plan to play classic films along with first run films as they become available, and there is no better movie to get things started than Jaws! Movie tickets must be purchased in advance online at nantucketdreamland.org – no tickets will be sold or changed at the gate. Singles in a car will be just $15 and two or more passengers will be $30, but it pays to be a member of The Dreamland. With a membership, tickets are just $10 and $25, respectively. Showtimes depend on daylight, so to start they will be around 8:45 pm and gradually get earlier as the nights get longer. Plans include a private food truck to be on-site to sell snacks. Another favorites is the towering Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). In its native China, it is an endangered species. This deciduous conifer is the sole living species of the genus Metasequoia, one of three species in the subfamily Sequoioideae. The tree faces considerable risks of extinction in its wild range due to deforestation, however it has been planted extensively in arboreta worldwide, where it has proved a popular and fast-growing ornamental plant. Honestly, I still can’t believe that there is a redwood on Nantucket – the island of tiny trees! And apparently it’s not the only redwood on the island… continued on page 18

Another striking evergreen is the Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) which is native to southern Japan. The tree itself is about 25-feettall with a growth shape that is broadly oval. While the dark green foliage is gorgeous against the gray skies of Nantucket, it’s the trunk that really drew my eye. The trunk of the specimen on the Reyes property is 3 to 4 feet in diameter, which is relatively rare on-island. Up close, you can see the deeply dividing bark. Its dark reddish-brown looking, like it’s shredding into strips of roast beef. A gorgeous contrast with the greygreen lichen on top. Given that both the Dawn Redwood and Hinoki Cypress are huge trees, you may be surprised to learn that both species have historically been used as bonsai trees. Other species of note are the umbrella pine, beech, cypress, and chestnut trees, as well as an enormous, mature stand of rhododendrons by the pond edge. As part of the NLB restoration, the former homestead near the pond was removed because it had fallen into disrepair. Much of the non-native and overgrown vegetation was also cleared to showcase and benefit the variety of specimen trees and improve viewing areas overlooking the pond. The pond was constructed by Betty’s husband, Jose, on a defunct cranberry bog and was used as a koi pond. Today there are painted turtles, irises, swamp azalea, and other continued on page 19

wetland vegetation surrounding the pond. There is now a small parking lot with easy access for bikers coming from the bike path. My personal favorite addition was the restoration of the historic red pergola gate which once framed the entrance to the property. It has been beautifully restored to its former glory. There is a single track trail with a small bridge that crosses over the marsh, leading to the southeast edge of the parcel and into the Middle Moors. The bridge, which matches the historic red pergola at the entrance, was once in disrepair but has also been restored. To find the main trail, head almost directly straight ahead from the parking lot. The path brings you to an opening of a wooded wetland. Follow this wooded trail by wetlands and small ponds. The trail can be muddy in spots, so keep that in mind when heading out. The trail ends onto a path that is part of the Norwood Farm trails owned by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. There are multiple trails you can follow from there and make your walk as long or as short as you like. When I visited the property recently with my dog and 10-year-old son, we came upon four large snapping turtles in various stages of digging nests and laying eggs at the former site of the Reyes house. I assumed the turtles had come from the pond since snappers like deeper water than the shallow wetlands. I thought of Betty Reyes and the beauty she had cultivated at this site. Had these old girls witnessed the work of the previous decades? I wonder what stories they would tell. Getting There: To visit the property, take Polpis Road heading out of town. At approximately 3 miles, be on the lookout for a parking lot with boulders with a clearly marked “Reyes Pond” etched into one rock (231 Polpis Rd.). There is ample parking.

Featured Restaurant: Easy Street Cantina
Seaside Dining for All by C. Oscar Olson
When it comes to finding food in downtown Nantucket, there are lots of great places to choose from. For us, outdoor dining is always ideal, and with more options than ever this summer, we’re starting to see a silver lining in everything we’ve been through. However, not all porches and patios are created equal. There is just one that comes complete with harbor views, sea breeze, spacious seating, and fast, friendly, family fun. There’s nothing on island like our own harborside oasis at Easy Street Cantina. Easy Street Cantina is conveniently located on the corner of Easy Street and Broad Street, the last stop before the Steamship Wharf. Their garden patio safely seats several groups large and small, and there’s plenty of room inside the restaurant as well. Place your order at the window and in minutes your food is ready, so you can grab a table or take it to go. They also offer convenient call-ahead curbside pick up so you don’t even have to leave your car. The menu runs the gamut with Mexican standbys like tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. If fresh fried seafood is what you’re after, then look no further for favorites like hand-breaded fried clams or beer battered Atlantic cod. In addition to the homestyle classics like burgers, clubs, and subs, Easy Street boasts the biggest and best breakfast menu on Nantucket, and they offer it all day long. So whether you’re up early or working late, you can get the fuel you need for all your island adventures. We started our Sunday brunch with a fantastic fully Veggie Omelette loaded Veggie Omelette. Three eggs envelop fresh spinach, mushrooms, onion, tomato, and green pepper with just enough melty cheddar cheese in every bite. We opted for hash browns over homefries, and their perfectly seasoned crunch was an excellent companion to our first dish. Omelettes are customizable at Easy Street, and so is just about everything
else. Get your breakfast on a bagel, bun, English muffin, or, our favorite, the flaky, buttery croissant. The Steak, Egg, and Cheese is one hearty handful! It has the best balance of savory steak and scrambled egg and was as satisfying as it was piping hot. For the kids and the kid in all of us, pancakes are always a sure shot. Light, fluffy, and golden brown, they can be served in several different ways with the topping or filling of Steak, Egg, and Cheese your choice. We can never say no to chocolate, so the Chocolate Chip Pancakes made for a tantalizing midday treat. They always come with plenty of maple syrup and an added extra of house whipped butter. And don’t forget the coffee! Easy Street Cantina is one of the few that grind fresh, and the Kona beans they use are rich, full bodied, and never bitter. Everything you order can be eaten inside or out, or wrapped up to go for all of your island adventures. Convenient containers bring breakfast to the beach, lunch to the Chocolate Chip Pancakes lighthouse, or dinner

Fisherman’s Platter to the dunes. Almost everything at Easy Street is made or finished with owner Bartholomew’s own Nantucket Island Spice. It contains an exotic blend of dehydrated vegetables and herbs, along with sea salt from the waters around Nantucket. It adds a fresh, savory blast to everything except maybe the pancakes, but don’t knock it till you try it! Add a jar to your order and take the taste of Easy Street home with you.
Chicken Taco Crunch in to the hard shell Chicken Taco and you’ll be wishing you ordered more than one. The flavors and textures keep coming with ripe red tomatoes, fresh salsa, refreshing lettuce, and the spicy tang of pickled jalapenos surrounding tender chicken and topped with a dollop of sour cream. We just can’t visit the Cantina with a taste of our favorite Fisherman’s Platter. This dish is truly a taste of Nantucket. It’s packed with all your favorite seaside staples–fresh clams, scallops, and flaky white cod–deep fried for a delicious golden crunch with hot, crisp french fries. We love the tang of the homemade tartar and the fresh crunch of the slaw. A feast on it’s own, and if you share, this
dish makes a great starter to any meal. For fresh food on the go, all of their wraps are portable perfection. The alluring, herby aroma of the Basil Chicken Salad is ideal for a hot summer’s day. Moist white meat, lettuce, tomato, and plenty of fresh basil make this handheld hard to put down. Everything on the menu is an incredible value at Easy Street Cantina, but we think the best deal by far is their Lobster Roll (cover photo). This Cape Cod classic has loads of lightly dressed fresh lobster and is served on the bread of your choice. It comes alongside seasoned French fries and we love it on a warm, grilled croissant with cool, crisp lettuce and just a touch of lemon. Still hungry? The desserts are divine on Easy Street. Home of The Nantucket Cookie Company, the bakery makes specialty cookies, gift tins, gift baskets, scones, muffins and more. Sip a shake made to order or end your meal with ice cream. The team at Easy Street Cantina never takes shortcuts. Everything on the menu is made from scratch and prepared with care, and the attention to detail on every plate is what keeps us coming back. Owner Bart Gangemi has been serving the Nantucket community for close to 30 years. Throughout that time, he has given back over $1,000,000 to islanders and visitors with his 10% discount program. Valid all year ‘round and available on their website, it’s something rarely seen on Nantucket or elsewhere. It puts on display The Cantina’s passion for their patrons and the island as a whole. each movie. Memberships support everything The Dreamland does for our island: from films and theater, live comedy, music, broadcast, community and special events, and more. Free popcorn, ticket discounts, and priority seating are an added extra, and since you’re donating to a non-profit, all membership fees are tax deductible. The theater’s South Water Street location won’t be staying silent this summer. Hale is hopeful he can welcome moviegoers back inside next month, and there’s even more fun happening upstairs. “We’re converting our stunning Harborview Room, compete with outdoor deck overlooking the harbor, into the Harborview Lounge, which will be open for sundown cocktails each evening from 4 to 8 pm. It’s going to be THE place to have a safe, socially-distanced sundown drink on Nantucket this summer!” None of these things would have been possible without the incredible generosity of this island community. In times as trying as these, it is more important than ever that we come together. “We are so very grateful to the community of Nantucket for making this project possible,” Hale says. “Over 525 families and individuals have contributed nearly $200,000 to make this dream a reality. This is a community project and it would not have been possible without the support of the Nantucket community. We can’t thank Nantucket enough.” The Dreamland has shined a spotlight on what was a dire situation and found something good in the shadows. Summer at the movies has always been a way to come together, and we are all grateful to get the chance this year. “The beauty of The Dreamland Drive-In is that it allows Nantucketers to gather together this summer - albeit apart in our cars. We yearn for human contact in the midst of this pandemic, and the drive-in is a way we can be together.” For more information on the theater and to become a member, visit nantucketdreamland.org.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Dining Out during the Pandemic During the pandemic, Nantucket eateries are taking precautions to protect their guests while they find new ways to serve them their favorite meals. Eateries who have always offered takeout are now doing curbside and home delivery. Fine dining restaurants are offering to-go menus and hoping to offer outdoor dining once the situation changes. There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! At our press time on June 30, Massachusetts is in Phase Two of reopening. This means that some restrictions on restaurants will begin to ease, and several island eateries will start offering distanced indoor dining and outdoor table service in addition to takeout. Under current guidance, tables will be 6-feet apart, groups are limited to six people, and seating at bars will be prohibited. Statewide face covering orders will remain in effect until otherwise noted, requiring workers to wear face covering at all times; customers may remove face covering when dining.
Around Town You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most in-town streets. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.
The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.

Town Pier Park Walk down Washington Street, past the Handlebar Cafe (which also has a few benches for customers) and go beyond Brant Point Marine. Here you’ll find benches and a path to the water. Parking across the street in the town lot.
Fair Street Park At the corner of Main & Fair sts. This park is in the heart of town, so it has no parking of its own, but there are usually parking spots nearby. It has benches & stone seating around fountain and is beautifully adorned with fresh plants.
“Arthur’s Park” portion of the Land Bank's Consue Springs Property On the edge of town beyond Consue Springs. It is a bit of a walk from Main Street. There is one picnic table and grassy area. No parking is available.
Pocket Park at Francis & Union This small grassy area with two benches is about a half-mile or so walk from downtown Nantucket. It’s a lovely place to sit with some views of the water, but is not on the water. There is no parking.
Old South Road Park Near the Airport Owned by the Town of Nantucket, this spacious grassy space dotted with young trees and sculpture is ideal for children who need to run (but keep them away from the busy streets! There is a paved pathway and several benches. No parking is available here, but it is next to an NRTA bus stop.
