Settled In and Stirring Things Up by Jack Fritsch David Gagnon is an exuberant fellow with a quick smile and a delighted laugh, but you soon notice there is a sincere focus (or singlemindedness?) just under the surface. This is a man who gets things done… and enjoys every minute of it. He first came to Nantucket around 1982 as part of a team from the University of Massachusetts to research the growth and control of the spreading Scrub Oak at Lost Farm. He returned three-and-a-half decades later as the new Executive Director of the Maria Mitchell Association. Welcome back David! David is originally from Brattleboro, Vermont, and maintains fond roots there. He studied Environmental Science at UMass (Amherst) with a specialization in Limnology (fresh water ecology). He continued his post-graduate education at the Yale School of Forestry. While at UMass he also played trombone in their Pride and Class of New England Marching Band; when asked to divulge something that nobody knows about him, he mischievously admitted that he played the trombone at Reagan’s Inauguration… yep, he gave the Gipper the sackbut. He has since lead a pretty full and fascinating career that has often branched far afield from the humble Scrub Oak. He was the Curator at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, conducting research on coastal geology and vegetation at Coast Guard Beach in Orleans. He was codirector, along with his wife Shelley, of the Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center in Vermont, a family oriented center focusing on public education and citizen science, with a wide variety of school programs, summer camp, research, and special events. Both of these institutions, he enthuses, can provide a lot of inspiration for Maria Mitchell. He was also in turn an Environmental Engineer for Hertz, head of his own

There is a prehistoric creature frolicking among Nantucket beaches right now. If you happen to be at the right place at the right time, you may find yourself among an orgy of living fossils. These are Atlantic Horseshoe Crabs. Atlantic horseshoe crabs live along the Atlantic coast from the Gulf of Mexico to Maine. They are usually seen around Nantucket waters in May and early June during their breeding season. Many people have seen horseshoe crabs but do not realize they are looking at one of the oldest animals on the planet. As "living fossils," horseshoe crab ancestors can be traced back through the geologic record to around 445 million years ago, 200 million years before dinosaurs existed! Horseshoe crabs are actually not true crabs at all, being more closely related to arachnids than to crustaceans. Horseshoe crabs have changed very little in the last 350 million years. Structure suits function and they are designed perfectly. Their tank-like shell is actually divided into a front shell, a hinged back shell, and a spike-like tail. The tail can be used to flip the animal upright if it is overturned. When mating, the smaller male crab attaches himself to the top of the larger female’s shell by using his specialized front claws shaped like boxing gloves. The male fertilizes the eggs as the female lays them in a nest in the sand. Some males (often called satellite males) do not attach to females but still have success in fertilizing the female's eggs as they crowd around the attached pair. Why are horseshoe crabs so important? Throughout its range, horseshoe crab eggs are important food sources for migrating shore birds. The Red Knot, in particular, relies on the abuncontinued on page 22

ISLAND PAIRINGS

Nantucket’s Other Beaches by Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie Warmer weather on the horizon enables us to be a little more adventurous in our beach exploration. While there are a number of tried and true, easy accessible sand spots that are the regular go-to beaches of Nantucket, the fact that the entire island is surrounded by beach should encourage you to venture off the beaten path as you wish and discover a less inhabited part of the island. Each beach is able to offer a distinct experience, and the same holds true in making your summer rosé wine selections. Why not make it a perfect pairing for your next beach excursion by exploring these beaches less traveled and the rosé to accompany it?

DYNAMIC DIONIS BEACH Just off the rolling bike path that leads to Madaket, the leisurely threemile jaunt from town to gain access to this north shore beach will take you down Eel Point Road. The sound of calm, soothing waters awaits you, with a gentle surf that is perfect for wading. The sand is hard-packed, making it ideal for a game of Kan Jam, Pro Kadima or tossing around the football. Here you are also sheltered by the high standing dunes, which are much appreciated on those breezy island days. This easily accessible beach has a moderate size parking area and offers limited facilities for those who feel more at ease knowing there is the comfort of a potty close by. Hint: Look for the large boulder marked “Dionis” to know you are heading in the right direction. There is also a bus stop at Eel Point Road. CHARTER FISHING VOTED NANTUCKET’S BEST CHARTER BOAT

“ALBACORE” Capt. Bob DeCosta

FISH GUARANTEED or your money back 2nd generation charter boat captain with 46 years of experience

My career in restaurants began as a waitress. Though not many believe it, I had always wanted to wait tables. It just seemed like such a great job. Active, busy, serving people great food. I started waitressing for Robin and EJ at EJ Harvey’s, where Island Pharmacy is now located. I loved every minute of it! After EJ’s, I started baking at 21 Federal Bakery with Maeve Harrington and Connie Sturgis, and was welcomed into a group of beloved, talented bakers who were generous with their friendship and their recipes. Tina Fournier and Liz Holland were just up the street at Center Street Cafe. I can still taste Liz’s Sesame Cottage Loaf. After 21, I moved on to The Boarding House, owned by Bob Kuratek, then to Le Languedoc, Provisions, Straight Wharf, and Nantucket Clambake Company, Nantucket Bagel Company, Nantucket Yacht Club, and finally to Bartlett’s Farm, with guest appearances and pit stops in several other places including a very brief (one day) stint at Easy Street Restaurant. Though it may seem like a long list, it was, in fact, my education, and each restaurant brought new ideas, new menus, and new experiences. Any technique or recipe that I wanted to learn was there for the asking. Long before the web or cell phones, walking in the backdoor and calling the kitchen phones was the preferred mode of communication. It was a very special club. Restaurants competed through the front doors, but the back doors were always open, always welcoming.

Striped Bass, Bluefish, Sharks, & Tuna Fishing 35-foot long custom sport fishing boat, 2-1/2, 5-hours and full day trips.

Last Islanders by Robert P. Barsanti I woke up to dubstep. The Bulgarian Power Team who tend the realtor’s houses on our street had keyed up some Central European Trap Music to blast over the sound of the riding mowers and their earphones. They had pulled into one of the empty gravel driveways across the street, opened the gate on the trailer, sent the riding mowers out upon increasingly eccentric orbits, and then dropped the beat. Thirty minutes later, they were gone. About twenty years ago, lawn mowing became landscaping. One lawnmower sticking out of a trunk has been replaced by pickup trucks, and then trucks with trailers. Lawn mowing required a good hat, a few gas cans, and some oil. Landscaping needs a fleet, a greenhouse, and a degree. Lawn mowing was a cash side job that would keep your summer in beer and bluefish. Now, landscaping is a profession. God bless it, I know many on this island who pay the mortgage, feed the kids, and put their names on the side of a few trucks by virtue of this new profession. Vito Capizzo died this week. While the New Yorker, Yankee Magazine, and the Globe will remember him for his exploits coaching football, I will also remember him for his lawn mowing. In my first years on-island, I rented a house from the Sylvia’s on Meadowview Road. Vito came by once every two weeks and mowed the lawn, whether it needed it or not. Then, he would heave the lawnmower into the back of his pickup and head off for another job. His generation of islanders has been slipping away; it has always been thus. We work, we grow old, we die. This spring has included notable names, like Fee, Glowacki, and Burchell, but every spring, every month, every weekend finds the island losing someone who was our history in one way or another. But the passing of this cohort of islanders might mark the end of something else. They may be the last islanders. During the great glory days of Whaler football, in the eighties and nineties, Vito dominated the fall. Crepe paper and balloons decorated the streets, the stands filled on Saturday afternoons, and the losing team was accompanied and serenaded down to the boat. Elementary school kids ran to the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs to play, while the majority of the males in the high school suited up for Saturday. The Super Bowl winning alumni played touch football on Sundays. Men wore varsity jackets into their forties. Whaler football (and cheerleading) was the chain that bound grandfathers to fathers to sons. If you were a young man on this island and you wanted to succeed in the trades, you needed football more than you needed math, English, and woodshop. The connections made in that locker room plumbed many houses and shingled many roofs. Sweat was Collective Equity; the electrician may not pick up the phone if it was someone else, but if the other number connected to a Whaler, he would probably make room on a Sunday morning to wire a basement. The boats, houses, and fortunes of island tradesmen started on Vito’s gridiron. Henry Fee had the same effect on the restaurants downtown. The cooks and waitresses at 21 Federal and the Club Car started making sandwiches and lobster pie at the Skipper. His workers spread out across the island, settled down, had families, and kept working. continued on page 12

ANTIQUES SNIPPETS

A Piggin for When You Need a Noggin Commonly asked questions and misunderstandings about antiques… and the odd or end fascinating bit! A piggin: you’ve probably never heard of one, and possibly never even seen one. You don’t know what you’ve been missing… literally. A piggin is a small wooden pail with one stave extended upward as a handle, or in other words, a small bucket-shaped dipper with a long vertical handle. They were used for dipping soft soap, hot water, a small drink of ale (“noggin”), or what-have-you. In these parts they were standard issue in whale boats for bailing out the bilge. Antiques Snippets are provided by Jack Fritsch, proprietor of the Antiques Depot at 2 S. Beach Street (across from the Nantucket Yacht Club) NantucketAntiquesDepot.com .

Most of us do not mourn the dead. We mourn the living. We want to believe in the glorious lie; the world does not change very much. So much depends on our belief in that lie. We want the lie that millionaires mow the lawns of billionaires. We want to believe the world Vito lived in still exists, where a football coach by dint of hard work, luck, and lawnmowers could buy his house and some rental houses for income. We want to believe that the Guild of Whalers will build you success. But lies wear out. We, the living, can’t make enough money to stay out here. We can’t do what the last islanders have done, we can’t get the mortgages, cut the deals, and mow the lawns. Without luck, wealth, and delusion, you can’t stay. No amount of sweat equity and inside knowledge can change that. And that is what we mourn. When the word came out that Vito had died, the local Whalers put out a call to meet at the football field. Thirty men showed up; the rest had already left on the boat for the night. Most of the members of the Guild of Whalers live in Mashpee now. Henry, Phyllis, Mary, and Vito were the last islanders. They thrived out here when Nantucket was an island and not a hashtag. The banks’ investments ended at the beach, the houses were owned by people with first names you knew, and the offensive line would become the selectmen. America could only touch us with a plane, a boat, or a phone call. With enough fog in the air, it couldn’t touch us at all. Nantucket is no longer that island. Our electricity, our finances, and our children travel back and forth from the mainland. The island hangs, wrapped and suspended in the international web of commerce and capitalism. It sways and wobbles from one “disruption” to another. The ferries slurped up the airlines, summer homes became investment properties, and AirBnB bled the inns. We are squeezed in a web by a million threads that we crafted and then wound around ourselves. We would like to think that the island will continue on, as it always has. It will change again into something else. Another set of landscapers will take over for the Bulgarian Power Team. The fog will clear, the waves will break at Nobadeer, and the grass will grow. History belongs to the people who stay. However they do it.

Environmental Consulting Firm (TRI-S) to advise and manage environmental pollution cleanup projects, and the Director of Operations for the Organic Trade Association during the start-off period of growth for that industry, involved in the creation of standards, regulations, and the promotion of organic products. He remains enthusiastic, even “If passionate: you ever have questions any about organics, really, anything at all, just call me!” While at the Trade Association, he was deeply involved in concluding our first Trade Agreement with South Korea… so all that Kimchee around… that’s probably his fault. It was clearly exciting work, and rewarding, but David said he missed the education field and working with non-profits: “I was ready for a change.” When the opportunity arose in 2015 to become the Executive Director of our Maria Mitchell Association, he took the plunge. “It was

a good time to do it. If I was ever going to try something like this, moving to an island, I was 55, it was now or never.” I can imagine broaching the subject with Shelley… “You’re thinking of doing what?” Actually, they were both intrigued, and Shelley encouraged him. The Maria Mitchell Association presents exciting new opportunities and challenges. It is the third oldest non-profit on island (established in 1902), and features a very large and diverse program. They operate two observatories, a natural science museum, and an aquarium, in addition to preserving the birthplace of Maria Mitchell herself. They offer a wide variety of science and history-related programming throughout the year. They have a staff of 40 people, and a total of 100 volunteers and interns, comprising both students and adults, from on- and off-island. They receive around 200 applications each year just for the six openings for astronomy internships alone. No surprise there, since the astronomy program is superb and widely continued on page 18

respected: of the 27 interns at work at Maria Mitchell, five or six go on for their PhD degrees. When David arrived on the scene, he assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, and decided he would first focus on promotion: too many people, both tourist and resident, do not fully understand what the Maria Mitchell Association is or what they do. This year in particular—the 200th anniversary of the birth of Maria Mitchell—David and his team are very busy with a yearlong schedule of activities, special events, and community outreach. They have co-produced a special exhibit on their namesake at the NHA Whaling Museum and are working on a program on plants at the Atheneum; an exhibit at the Pacific National Bank on Maria’s discovery of a comet (she had her telescope set up on their roof at the time); a symposium on “Women in Science” at Babson College; a Birthday Parade, and more. This Sunday, June 3, they are hosting a family afternoon at Cisco Brewery featuring the launch of the signature “Comet Chaser” cocktail. Last week they held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new Maria continued on page 19

Mitchell Association Research Center, with updated classroom and research space as well as a state-of-the-art home for the MMAs biological collections. David is still busy planning a host of additional special pop-up events all season long…check the Calendar of Events in this publication and on Nantucket.net for dates and times. How has it been adjusting from life in the rolling mountains of Vermont, to the confining sand dunes of an off-shore island? David and Shelley feel that “Nantucket is amazing! There is so much going on here, so many interesting things to do. Much more than Vermont. The Dreamland is terrific… the family membership is just amazing!” They also love the sense of place here: “it’s like stepping back 30 years.” They are also impressed by the closeness and friendliness of the community. It is, after all, a very small town on a small island. Although we live in the Age of Communication, where information is exchanged quicker than thought by ever more sophisticated technology… that technology would appear to be superfluous here on Nantucket: “News gets around here faster by word-of-mouth than any technology could compete. Everyone out here seemed to know us even before we landed on the dock.” That can be both good and bad. Nantucket is a tight, supportive community, but if you are not familiar with living in a small town it might take some getting used to. And there is the remoteness… it can take an effort to get off the island. “Everyone here must be a very good planner… and weather watcher. It seems every time we need to go off, there’s always a storm.” Life is certainly different than on the mainland. Among the things they like best about Nantucket is how it’s such a good place to walk and bike around. There are so many new places to discover and explore. He has been bitten by the arrowheading bug. Shelley and he also look forward to getting to know the harbor better. They have learned to scallop (and of course have developed their own secret new and improved techniques). David is also a self-professed novice sailor, and confessed that sailing out here is a lot different than sailing on a lake in Vermont. He has become an enthusiastic member of Community Sailing. He beams “It was the Best Birthday present EVER!” Now there’s a hint for spouses far and wide. We are looking forward to seeing what the Maria Mitchell Association has planned for us this season... and I for one am looking forward to seeing David out sailing in the harbor.

Where It All Began from page 7

Though I do miss the sounds and the smells of the kitchen (albeit only by a few feet as my current office is just down the hall), I’ve found that many of the same efficiencies and philosophies are applicable in my role as Market Manager. Rotation, knowing where your ingredients come from, that sense of urgency and teamwork, sharing recipes and ideas, it’s all part of Customer Service. I so value my friendships that came from my time in kitchens and have a strong bond with many of my former coworkers. Call it muscle memory or commitment, but I’ve worked various school functions with some of them over the years, and we all simply pick up where we left off and fall into the same routines. I’m an avid notetaker and have several journals and notebooks filled with various recipes from all of the restaurants and many of my friends and coworkers over the years. Some were in their handwriting, some had names, some were just scribbles on a napkin, but they all evoke fond memories of kitchens I’ve had the joy of working in.

dance of horseshoe crab eggs in the late spring when migrating northward. One female horseshoe crab can lay over 88,000 eggs! Over time, the migration patterns and timing of many birds have evolved to coincide with the abundant horseshoe crab egg availability. Crabs, shrimp, and small fish also eat the eggs and small juvenile horseshoe crabs. Horseshoe crabs have a copper-based blue blood which contains a substance called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL). This unique factor of their physiology make them extremely important in the biomedical industry. The LAL compound coagulates in the presence of small amounts of bacterial toxins and is used to test for sterility of medical equipment. Anyone who has had an injection, vaccination, or surgery has benefitted from horseshoe crabs. After the crabs are “bled” and some of their blood is collected, the crabs are released back into the wild where they were captured. Horseshoe crabs are also harvested to be used as bait for whelk and eel (with a state-issued permit). This fishery is managed at the interstate level by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC). Every year, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries submits a compliance report on horseshoe crab numbers, including catch information. In 2016, the latest available report online, 52 of 230 horseshoe crab bait permits issued by Marine Fisheries were actively fished. That same year, fishermen reported catching 101,642 crabs for bait. Only four of the 14 biomedical harvest permits were actively fished in 2016. Those catch numbers are confidential, though the animals are returned to the water after “bleeding.” Recent closures of the horseshoe crab fisheries in New Jersey, New York, and other neighboring states are expected to increase harvest pressure on dwindling populations of Massachusetts horseshoe crabs. As a first response, the state has reduced the annual quota and prohibited harvests around the full moons from late April through June. What is Nantucket doing to help protect our horseshoe crab populations? It is crucial that state managers have good estimates of the number of horseshoe crabs in Massachusetts before they can set appropriate harvest quotas. Since 2009, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) have been consistently surveying two beaches on Nantucket (Warren’s Landing in Madaket Harbor and Monomoy Beach in

Horseshoe crab love on the beach

Nantucket Harbor) to document population sizes of mating horseshoe crabs. This collaborative regional volunteer effort has been spearheaded by the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries to document population trends. Surveys like this are conducted all around New England on the same days and nights each spring. Organizations like MMA and NCF train teams of staff and volunteers to monitor the populations on the selected beaches. Because there is such a long-term set of data, researchers can use this information to track horseshoe crab populations as they fluctuate over the years. Surveys are done at high tide around the new and full moons from late April to late June. This is the ideal time to survey because the horseshoe crabs are mating and come into shore at high tides to lay eggs. Over the years, island scientists have found that there is typically one survey session with the highest density of crabs. They have also found that crabs are usually seen more at the night surveys and less frequently in the day, although there are still plenty to see if you take a stroll this season! Horseshoe crabs are best seen on the harbor beaches during high tides. If you see a horseshoe crab on the beach, please let it be. Taking photos is fine, but also be careful to keep dogs and children from disturbing them. After all, they are mating!

gnon Blanc. A small amount of red wine is also carefully grown in this region, hence making this lovely rosé wine from a blend of mostly Pinot Noir, with small amounts of Syrah and Malbec. Peach and strawberry fruit aromas on the nose, this dry wine is thirst quenching after a long bike ride with grapefruit flavors that complement the nose and a backbone of minerality, perfect for sipping by the water.

LADIES BEACH

For anyone looking for more surf and some great people watching, head over to the south shore ocean beaches along the southwest edge of the island. Drive straight on Bartlett Farm Road. You’ll hit the sand just past the turn off to the farm, then continue directly forward to reach the somewhat secluded Ladies Beach. Here you will enjoy the rugged, natural beauty of the shoreline sans facilities or lifeguards. Parking is limited and it is a little bit of a walk to transport your goods to the sand, but well worth it to spend a long afternoon here. Bring your surfboard and a leash for the dog at this spot, along with a light jacket as it can get cool as you watch the awe inspiring, multi-colored light show of a sunset in the early evening. NOTE: You do not need a driving permit in order to reach this destination, but do be cautious when driving on the sand, especially if your vehicle does not have 4WD. Cooler Essential: Pasqua “11 Minutes” Rosé delle Venezie, Italy 2017 Famiglia Pasqua has created this fine blend from the most noble native grapes of their region like Corvina and Trebbiano di Lugana, with a touch of Syrah and Carmenère. The name “11 Minutes” refers to the duration of skin contact that adds the pink color before pressing the grapes. Corvina adds a floral component to the wine and much appreciated acidity for a clean, crisp finish. Trebbiano brings elegance and a long aftertaste, while Syrah offers a succulent spiciness and Carmenére provides the overall structure of this mouth-watering wine. It’s such a crowd pleaser, it may only take you 11 minutes to finish the bottle.

QUIET QUIDNET BEACH If you want to hide away for that secret rendezvous or just avoid seeing anyone you know on your day off, adventure to the less inhabited eastern side of the island. This isolated area offers you the peace, quiet, and serenity that you may be looking for. Located off Quidnet Road and hence the name of the beach, you will continue on Polpis Road past the turn for Wauwinet

Named after a Native American Indian who centuries ago was the lookout in this area for whales, Tom Nevers refers to an area located in the southeast corner of the island. This neighborhood is known for being extremely remote and so far out, yet it is where many a glamorous weddings are held, along with the Nantucket Island Fair in the fall. There is a group who would like to establish a museum in the bunker there that was originally built during the Cold War to protect President Kennedy. Public beach access is available from the end of Wanoma Way, or you can park at Tom Nevers Field and walk over to the beach from there. Because there is a bit of a walk, most people are completely unaware of the pristine beach that awaits them away from the crowds. The sand here is coarse and the waves way bigger: be careful of riptides in the ocean. The long stretch of a beach is a much-appreciated serene nature for birding, whale watching, and surf casting. Take Me with You: Hentley Farm Rosé, Barossa Valley, Australia 2017 This is a rosé made for serious wine drinkers. A traditional Barossa rosé, it is a blend of mostly Grenache (as commonly found in Côtes de Provence rosés) and a touch of Shiraz (aka Syrah). The nose is full of raspberry and red currants, with an attractive creamy texture followed by a dry, crisp finish. An outstanding level of intensity in this wine makes it a homerun for a true rosé connoisseur.

and take the next left turn. Here you will find fine soft sand between your toes and a perfect area for combing the beach for shells. Be sure to bring a selection of delectable cheeses to enjoy with your lovely wine while enjoying the latest book you picked up from Nantucket Bookworks. Rosé Respite: Cellar Frisach “L’Abrunet de Frisach Rosato,” Terra Alta, Spain 2017 This certified organic wine is made from a trio of varietals that are somewhat similar based on their parenthood, yet also very different due to their subsequent mutations: Garnacha Gris, Garnacha Blanca, and Garnacha Negra. The single vineyard is located in the Catalonia region of Spain, experiencing hot days in the sun and cool nights from the coastal breeze. The nose and mouth on this wine are both very generous with wild strawberry and red apple skin. The smooth finish will have you salivating for more, just like a good book has you turning to the next page.
