ISLAND ENTREPRENEURS

Six Years of Hugs, Handshakes, and High Fives A short walk from Main Street down Washington, just beyond the NRTA’s Greenhound Building and before the AAN Ceclia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, is a center of island entrepreneurship known as The Handlebar Cafe. Six years ago, when owners Jason and Courtney Bridges first opened The Handlebar, they thought it would take two to three years to implement their vision of a community space. “It happened the first year‌ We wanted to create an environment that felt good as soon as you walked in‌where you could meet someone you didn’t know and become friends. We try to make the Handlebar as inclusive as possible...a smile for everyone.â€? In this community space disguised as a coffee shop, guests can order freshly brewed coffee (plain or fancy, hot or iced), along with familiar and exotic tea drinks, snacks, and light bites before they settle onto one of the comfy corner chairs, at the long table, on a bench on the sunny front patio, or in the “secret gardenâ€? out back. There’s always something new at Handlebar Cafe. In addition to constantly refining their coffeemaking techniques, they have brought in food and beverage items for children, were among the first on-island to eliminate plastic straws, and now offer glass water bottles. They like to partner with other island entrepreneurs, such as artist Meredith Hanson, whose art adorns their paper cups. And they are donating 100 percent of the purchase price of their “Hugs, Handshakes, and High Fivesâ€? mugs to Fairwinds, Nantucket’s counseling center.

Nantucket Island has long been a nurturing place for entrepreneurs, starting centuries ago with the whaling crews who plied their trade around the world and the women left behind to open and operate businesses. More recently, owners of nationally-known companies like Nantucket Nectars, Cisco Brewers, and Lightwedge got their feet wet here. And several popular Nantucket companies like Something Natural, Haul Over, and Lola 41 have sailed beyond Nantucket to open branches in Greenwich, Newburyport, and Boston. The path to growing a successful business on Nantucket has many challenges, and the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has launched the Island Center for Entrepreneurship to offer support to early-stage entrepreneurs, and will host a special workshop on June 8. “Research has proven that access to local resources is critical to the success of any entrepreneurial venture. With the generous support of ReMain Ventures, the Chamber can now offer these much needed resources, so island entrepreneurs will have the same support as their mainland counterparts, said David Martin, Chief Executive Officer of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. “This pilot aligns perfectly with ReMain’s vision to empower growth and innovation on Nantucket, said Cecil Barron Jensen, Executive Director of ReMain Nantucket and ReMain Ventures. “This is a natural next step in the Chamber’s strategic plan to support island businesses and spark entrepreneurial initiatives. The Chamber has tapped Karen Macumber, a serial entrepreneur, business owner, and year-round resident, to pilot this initiative. Macumber first joined the start-up world in 1996 as the head of marketing at Monster.com. She later founded and sold a successful media agency, named one of the 50 fastest growing women-owned businesses in the country by Entrepreneur magazine. She also led a digital media start-up through the prestigious MassChallenge accelerator program. Macumber is available to meet with new business owners to help them with key aspects of their business. In order to be eligible to participate in the program, entrepreneurs must be island residents interested in starting a business or seeking assistance in scaling a small business already operating on the island. Interested entrepreneurs can apply for an initial consulting session by visiting nantucketchamber.org/nice. On Saturday morning, June 8, NICE, in conjunction with The Nantucket Conference and SCORE Cape Cod & the Islands, is hosting a three-and-a-half hour workshop for island business entrepreneurs called Growing Great Companies. For a $20 fee (which will go toward funding more programs for island entrepreneurs), can meet and listen to veteran entrepreneurs and investors who will the struggles, success factors, and secrets of building great businesses in a variety of industries. An interactive panel from 9 to 10 am will feature six entrepreneurs and investors, and after a networking break, small group workshops will be held during which attendees can meet with the speakers to talk about: How to Raise Money; Running a Crowdfunding Campaign; Growing Your Business in a Digital World; Crafting an Effective Marketing Strategy; and other topics to be announced. The focus of this event is to help entrepreneurs think through the challenges and issues related to getting their companies — whatever the industry — onto a growth trajectory. For additional details and to register to attend the workshop, contact the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce at 508-228-1700.

Chad the Bartender THE TRINITY COLLECTION by Robert P. Barsanti

After heavy wind, thunderstorms, and two rounds of cancelled ferries, we were sitting in each others laps on the boat headed back to Hyannis on a Sunday night. The weekend had risen, crashed, and washed up the beach with most of my fellow passengers. They had not planned on the glamour or excitement of the slow boat on the way back. Nor did they count on the absence of a velvet rope. We sat where we could on the inside, and where we had to on the outside. Jennifer, Becky, and three of their friends had joined me at a table; they slid in together and pushed me up against the window. They were quite, quite “yar” (as Katherine Hepburn might put it.). They travelled with colorful overnight bags, leather briefcases, and without men. And they wore fun shoes; bright red clogs, glowing white and rhinestone bedecked sandals, and one pair of leopard print espadrilles. Otherwise, the party clothes were stowed away and the polar fleece and jeans were out for the crossing. While there was conversation, computers were opened, highlighters appeared, and books uncracked as soon as we passed Brant Point. And then Chad the Bartender appeared. He carried a fedora, wore a Vineyard Vines pink pastel shirt (now available at Target), and a pair of baby blue chinos decorated with red cups and white ping pong balls. He found a pretext to begin a conversation, and then he began to work. He worked particularly hard on the woman in leopard print shoes. No she didn’t want a drink. No she didn’t want something from the snack bar. No, she didn’t want to go outside. She deflected, she eye-rolled, she glanced at her companions, and she sent every conceivable message a young woman could send without using my hot coffee (which she would have been welcome to). As we pulled into Hyannis, Chad the Bartender made one final attempt at a phone number before withdrawing into the damp and the dark. The young women glanced at each other, put their work away, and prepared to return to their lives. It must be exhausting.

Stemming the Tide of Invasive Plants Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation There are many unique and special things about Nantucket, not the least of which are our gorgeous conservation lands. Much of these habitats are home to rare and unique species of plants, animals, birds, and insects. The various conservation organizations work to manage the landscapes and mitigate for potential threats to the species and habitats which are important to biodiversity as well as to the island aesthetic. One of the major threats to Nantucket’s native biodiversity are non-native invasive species. What is a non-native invasive species? First, a non-native is a species unlikely to have arrived without human assistance. The invasive part of the definition means that it is established and spreading with negative impacts causing economic or ecological harm, or is harmful to human health. In response to this looming and ever-present threat, in 2003, the Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) was created by members of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative and the general public who were concerned about this growing problem. It began as a mix of conservation professionals, botanists, professional landscapers, business people, Nantucket Garden Club members, and local plant enthusiasts. The goal was to create a group that cares about the issue from multiple angles. Early on, we worked to define our “worst invaders” and those that might be a threat to come. Today, more than fifteen years later, membership includes the island’s major conservation organizations, private businesses, and educational organizations. A list of partners is at nantucketbiodiversity.org/ipsc In New England, 32 percent of the documented plants are not native. Of those, 10 percent are considered invasive and directly threaten native species. What kinds of harm occur from non-native invasives on Nantucket?

Tired of drinking the same old blush plonk that you don’t even like anyway? Feel lost and overwhelmed in the rosé aisle these days? Not sure how to get the biggest bang for your buck amongst the current sea of pink wine? With summer season approaching and your Nantucket social calendar quickly filling for the next few months, now is the time to brush up on your rosé wine tasting skills and discover a few new favorites to pair with your summertime activities. While most pink wines that hail from the traditional rosé region of Côtes de Provence in France are a blend of grapes that grow exceptionally well in this warm, southern region, rosé wine these days is made from almost any red grape variety (sometimes with a splash of white added as well) and from an array of regions. Pinot Noir, a thin-skinned, low-tannin grape, produces a soft, lovely rosé and offers different characteristics in the wine based on where the grapes are grown. Long Meadow Ranch, located in Rutherford of Napa Valley, is well-known for excellence through sustainable farming. Not only do they grow their grapes sustainably, their estate is also home to a large garden of organic heirloom fruits and vegetables, beehives where the tenants help to pollinate the vineyards, and a growing flock of egg-laying chickens. This holistic approach to agriculture leads to the health of the vineyards without the use of pesticides and chemicals, creating a wine that is clean from the vineyard to the glass. Long Meadow Ranch Rosé of Pinot Noir comes from their cool climate estate of Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. This mouthwatering wine is full of floral aromas, hints of stone fruit and fresh wild strawberries. It is fresh on the palate, with the gentle power of spice. The long length and layers in the wine will remind you of a colorful, sultry sunset at Cisco beach. continued on page 18

Roby Art Collection Exhibited on Island Avid art collector and long-time summer resident Sara Roby was a strong supporter of many local arts and cultural organizations throughout her time on Nantucket Island. Less than a decade after World War II, she started to support artists through the purchase and exhibition of their work, and she amassed a remarkable collection of early- and mid-twentieth century American artists. Concerned that figurative art was being eclipsed, Roby established a foundation in her name in the 1950s to collect art that recognized the beauty as well as the tensions of modern life. In 1986, her collection was given to the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM). This summer, the Nantucket Historical Association is pleased to present a major traveling exhibition from SAAM entitled Modern American Realism: Highlights from the Sara Roby Foundation Collection. The exhibition, which will be on display in the Nantucket Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street through October, is expertly curated by Virginia Mecklenburg, Chief Curator at SAAM and includes more than 40 works of art by internationally recognized American artists including Will Barnet, Isabel Bishop, Edward Hopper, and Wolf Kahn. The collection is a reflection of the multivalent realities of contemporary life and of human emotion at its most elemental and universal. The NHA Board of Trustees is grateful to Stephanie Stebich, The Margaret and Terry Stent Director at SAAM; Virginia Mecklenburg, Chief Curator at SAAM; and Joseph Roby, Sara’s son, for partnering with the NHA to present this ground-breaking traveling exhibition and bring the collection back to the island for all to enjoy again.

years as Executive Director of Small Friends on Nantucket and now serves as Executive Director of the Artists Association of Nantucket. Jason runs Social Bridges Consulting (which he founded in 2011), was Public Outreach Manager for the Town of Nantucket, and currently serves on the Nantucket Select Board. In November 2017, after presenting a TEDx talk at Wabash College about “Practicing Emotional Intelligence, Jason began to produce Bridges to Leadership podcasts designed to teach Emotional Intelligence. “I like to talk, so audio made sense to me. Defined as the ability to be “aware of, control, and express emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically, EQ is thought to be key for personal and professional success. Jason explained how he became aware of the need to teach this skill. “Nine years ago I hired an intern [for Nantucket by Bike] through a program at my college. It turned into life skills coaching with the student: you can learn the business skills in classes, but the EQ skills are never taught. Now he and Courtney offer an “EQ Bootcamp to their interns, and they include this training for coffee shop employees. “Through the bike tours and the coffee shop, I can help mentor and develop more people...that’s what gets me up in the morning. That and a good cup of coffee. When asked how he juggles all of his responsibilities—two thriving businesses, fatherhood, politics, and podcasts—he simply replied “Everything I do I love...and I’ve learned how to delegate well. With his Bridges to Leadership podcasts, Jason shares what he’s learned and what he teaches: people skills through relationship building, storytelling, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and empathy. In his first episode, he talks candidly about a traumatic experience at age 16 that put him on his current path. In the following episodes (15 so far), he tackles a variety of subjects that include active listening and body language, small talk strategies, leadership, mistakes as opportunities, and Fatherhood Friday interviews. Most are 6 to 10 minutes, with a few longer interview podcasts. Jason Bridges defines leadership as “walking through the door and instead of thinking here I am, think there you are. At the top of his website jasonmbridges.com, is his motto that sums up his philosophy well: “Be interested, not interesting.

Chad the Bartender from page 5

I have been a young man. The nature of young men is a difficult sort of pudding: they are dense, they are lonely, and they are full of raisins. All of this radiates out of them when they are not huddled with other young men. So it was with me when I was Chad’s age. However, I was much more keen to hear the sounds of rejection as it rallied and ricocheted off of my forehead. I wouldn’t have approached the table without an invitation, perhaps not even then. The pants, the shirt, the hat were another matter entirely. As an islander, I had to wonder what weather he had sat through that afternoon. Further, as he was getting on our floating bus station, I wondered what he thought he might be dressing up for on the boat. I have travelled many times, back and forth, and I haven’t seen many Ivy League Frat Parties break out-or at least not the ones that would appear in a Vineyard Vines catalogue. Further, I didn’t know who he thought he would impress. Becky and her friends at my table wore their shoes for each other—they marked themselves with them. But Chad did not have a lacrosse team of fellows to sink into, all with their sharp hats and party-themed pants. Perhaps he had been abandoned by a yacht—or perhaps that was the story he wanted to tell. If I were to find him on Instagram, I would not be surprised. The Influencers are everywhere. When we travel, we can pretend to be our best selves. I once knew a wonderful woman who lived off a trust fund, but preferred to keep everything in a 63 liter REI backpack and would wash her underwear in the sink. The person she wanted to be was a stripped-down, bad-smelling, individualist and not the grand-daughter of a bank’s client. Out on the south island of New Zealand, she wasn’t going to trip over any of her mother’s friends, lawyers, or trustees. No one was going to strip her costume off and proclaim her a fraud. She contained multitudes, as do we all. In the last few years, our visitors have decided that they are Gatsby—or at least one of his party guests. America has always worshipped the pluto-

Chad the Bartender from page 15

crats and Nantucket is their Valhalla. A bartender who wears black pants, white shirt, and a black bow ties decides that, for this weekend, he will live the life of a Tufts frat boy. He will smirk at the world under his fedora, confident that there is a party waiting for him and his pants. Chad will be welcomed, back slapped, and loved. He walks onto a stage, in a play of his own making, unsure of the stage set or the other actors. Society has set the island up for this. First, our phones connect us to the world; we want the world to know we are on Nantucket with the swells and the Patriots. Chad no longer takes a selfie inside the Figawi tent; instead he narrates a five minute video of getting dressed, then another video of getting into the tent. He can make himself the star of his own show. The more audacious his show, the more the audience will click and subscribe. Second, AirBnB and others have made the island a destination for shortterm visitors. Thirty years ago, Chad might have come to the island looking for some shifts at 21 Federal and some time on the beach. Perhaps a few years later, when the testosterone fog dissipates, he might build a house in Tom Nevers and settle in. But we don’t have those jobs for him, nor do we have the housing, or the time. So, he comes for the weekend and the party. Then he leaves. Nantucket, at our best, has been more of a society than an island. Living on a sand dune, cheek to jowl, means a tolerance and a blindness to the differences of wealth and status. The championship winning coach reads on the next towel and he does not want to be in your selfie. The Honduran landscaper may order drinks from your bar that night. To enjoy Nantucket, you need to have a longer relationship with it. You need to feel the fog and damp seep into your bones before you can feel the warmth of the August sun. Chad the Bartender will miss that these days. Hopefully, Becky and her friends won’t.

The family-friendly performance is directed and choreographed by Michelle Birmingham and features Nantucket Ballet youth dancers. The dancers have been working hard to bring to life this classic fairy tale ballet. Nantucket Ballet opened in 2013 and has been dedicated to providing quality dance instruction to island residents year-round. The school offers ballet classes for ages 3 to adult with a focus on technique, artistry, and joy of movement. Performances of Cinderella are at 1 pm and at 4 pm on June 1 and June 2. Tickets are $10 to $22 at whiteherontheatre.org or 508-825-5268.

Forty Years of Art & Whimsy Nantucket captured the heart of artist John Lochtefeld in the 1960s, after just a single visit. For the past four decades, his drawings, paintings, and wood sculptures, bright and dreamy and whimsical, have brightened the homes of many on- and off-island. This Monday, June 3, the Artists Association of Nantucket opens Folk Tales to Fine Art: A John Lochtefeld Retrospective in their Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive. Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, visitors will see a wide range of woodcuts and intaglio prints, as well as his watercolors, oils, and a few sculptures embedded with photographs and John’s quotable wisdom. The show will be on display through the month, with a Grand Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Friday, June 28 in the VAC.

Calling All Great Believers Thursday, June 6 at 6:30 pm, Tim Ehrenberg will host a a book club discussion of The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai, a book that has been described as a “big novel that makes you laugh and cry and leaves you thinking about it for days after you’ve finished.. Makkai, who will be a presenting author at this year’s Nantucket Book Festival at noon on June 15, is the also the author of The Hundred-Year House and The Borrower, as well as the short story collection Music for Wartime. Her short fiction won a 2017 Pushcart Prize, and was chosen for The Best American Short Stories for four consecutive years. All are welcome to attend the June 6 discussion of The Great Believers, LGBT+ history & literature, Stonewall Riots in 1969 (50 years ago), and much more. Although it is not necessary to have read the book before the discussion, readers may purchase a copy at Mitchell’s Book Corner on Main Street. This event is “a great kick-off to Pride Month, and I’m hoping for a great turnout and amazing discussion... It’s a subject dear to my heart, explained Ehrenberg. The Great Believers Book Club event will be held upstairs in Mitchell’s Book Corner on Main Street.

Nantucket Pink from page 8

Perfect Pairing: Cypress Grove Chevre Sgt. Pepper Fresh Goat Milk Cheese with a secret combination of four peppers, exotic spices, and pepper threads that results in a complex taste experience Flowers Vineyards and Winery is located in the far west, true Sonoma Coast of California. You can easily see the Pacific Ocean from the vineyards, less than two miles from the estate on top of the coastal range mountains. The ocean helps to generate cooling sea breezes and coastal fog (sound like Nantucket, anyone?), while the extremely high elevations ensure an abundance of sunshine for a long, slow growing season. Flowers Rosé of Pinot Noir has aromas of rosé petals and subtle hints of grapefruit. The palate bursts with flavors of fresh orange and lemon zest, with a silky texture that draws you back for more. The lively acidity makes this more of a wine to enjoy with a lobster bake from Souza’s Seafood. Perfect Pairing: Wasik’s Missouri Truckle that is a delightful clothbound aged cheddar named after cylinder shaped truckles that are used more often in cheese aging Copain Wines is located in the bucolic Russian River Valley, minutes from downtown Healdsburg. These Pinot Noir specialists source their grapes from cool-climate vineyards in the surrounding areas, offering more of a delicate style with a hands-off, minimal intervention approach to winemaking. This boutique winery creates small production batches of a few select wines, making them masters at their artisanal craft. Copain Rosé of Pinot Noir “Tous Ensembles” (meaning “all together” in French) is a wine with resounding freshness and appeal. Aromas of white flowers and crisp red fruits greet you on the nose, followed by flavors of honeydew melon and white strawberries. This lighter style rosé is an excellent accompaniment for your cocktail party overlooking the harbor at the Nantucket Dreamland. Perfect Pairing: Alexian Forest Mushroom Paté, a sumptuous slice of terrine made with chicken liver, onions, spices, salt and garlic to round out the all-natural ingredients When most people here the word Sancerre, they think of Sauvignon Blanc. However, Pinot Noir is the red grape of this lovely region located along the Loire River in the cool-climate of Northern France. Unlike many Sancerre Rosé producers, Gerard Boulay harvests his Pinot Noir specifically to make his pink wine by direct pressing the grapes, then putting them into tank. It is not a selection of young vines as he has none! Gerard Boulay Sancerre Rosé “Sibylle” is a wine that does not lack personality. Acidity, minerality, layers of flavors, and an opulence of aromas make this a more complex, yet inviting wine to sample. Do not shy away from the slightly denser hue of this wine, as the well-integrated structural components of this pinot noir rosé are worth the adventure. Sometimes the underdog does win the Miacomet Golf Club’s annual member-guest tournament. Perfect Pairing: COVAP Sliced Iberico Chorizo, pure acorn fed with a deep, meaty paprika flavor and ready to eat in thin slices Tasting a selection of rosés made from the same grape variety, yet from different regions, is an excellent start to your summer rosé refresher course. Eventually, with enough practice, you will be the master of your own palate and you discover your new favorite wines for this season (and maybe even a new to you beach!).

Invasive Plants from page 7

Economic: Invasive plants cost the U.S. an estimated $20 billion per year to manage and control. On Nantucket, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and the Nantucket Islands Land Bank spend a lot of time, money, and people power managing invasive species on their extensive properties. Many species, like garlic mustard and spotted knapweed are removed by hand (cover photo). Others have to be mechanically and sometimes chemically treated for more effective removal. Smaller organizations, like the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, have hired contractors for invasive species remediation. All of these methods are costly. Human Health: Many invasive shrubs have a longer phenology, meaning they hold their leaves on longer into the fall. This helps create higher humidity, perfect habitat for ticks. Recent research has shown that tick densities are three times higher under invasive shrub populations than native plants. So, if you hate ticks (and who doesn’t?), you should consider removing all of those invasive species. Ecological: One of the major concerns about non-native invasive species is their impact to our diverse ecosystems on Nantucket. With a number of rare and endangered species calling Nantucket home, invasive species have the potential to displace natives, damaging populations. Native plants are known to increase biodiversity and reduce risks associated with invasive species, which supports resilient ecosystems in the face of climate change. The IPSC works to combat these negative impacts of invasives by actively pursuing non-native invasive plant species identification, management, research, education, and eradication. So how to these plants arrive to our island? Most introductions are accidental; through hitchhikers on your clothing or luggage. Dogs are also vectors of transport—think of all the seeds and barbs that stick to fluffy fur. Many invasive shrubs produce berries which are eaten by birds (honeysuckle and autumn olive, for example) and transported as the bird digests. Seeds are excreted in the new location and may germinate into a new population. Within the island, invasive plants can be further spread through contaminated landscape equipment, animals, as well as windblown seeds. Some of these factors may be more difficult to combat. One thing we can address, however, is the planting of known invasive species. The state maintains a list of species that are banned for sale and transport within the Commonwealth. However, the IPSC tends to focus on the importance of planting native. Native plants support insects, which in turn support birds and other animals. More caterpillars in your yard might sound alarming, but most of these caterpillars are eaten by nesting birds, and many become pollinators. What can you do to help “stem the tide” of invasives? Responsible landscaping practices: Please don’t plant invasive plants! The complete list of Massachusetts prohibited plants can be found on the IPSC website. IPSC would also ask that the following plants no longer be planted on Nantucket: Scotch Broom, Chinese Silver Grass, or Weeping Love Grass. While not currently on the State banned list, on Nantucket these species have shown invasive tendencies and are already known to escape cultivation. Plant natives: The Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative, along with the IPSC, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and the Nantucket Land Council, produced the guide, “Landscaping with Native Plants on Nantucket.” This guide helps you select native plants for your landscaping with information on soil moisture, preferred light levels, and type of plants desired (tree, shrub, grass, perennial). Copies of this guide are available at many conservation organizations or can be downloaded from the IPSC website. Report invasive plants – If you see something, say something. If you see a worrisome plant or think you have one of the worst, let us know! Have a favorite conservation area and notice a new, potentially invasive species? Send us an email. The more populations we know about and document, and hopefully eradicate, the better. Feel free to contact co-Chair of the IPSC, Dr. Sarah Bois, at stbois@llnf.org. Join a pulling event – throughout the growing season (May to August) the IPSC holds weekly pulling events for Garlic Mustard and Spotted Knapweed. If you’re interested, check out the website or email Sarah Bois at the above email. The IPSC provides training, gloves, and trash bags. Your efforts help keep these invasive plants out of the conservation areas and prevent further spread. Want more information about invasive species? Interested in being a member of the Nantucket IPSC? Have you discovered an invasive plant that needs reporting? Would you like to volunteer with one of our invasive plant removal projects? Walk in the Footsteps of Maria Mitchell

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line.
