NHA Offers Eight Exciting Programs during June The Nantucket Historical Association’s popular June Lecture Series is back for 2017, with a different lecture every Monday evening in June at 6 pm in the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street. This year, the NHA June Lecture Series features a variety of speakers who will give engaging talks on topics from ocean life to Nantucket history. These lectures are free for NHA members and only $10 for the general public. To start the series, Dr. Christopher Clark will speak Monday, June 5 on The Singing Planet: Ocean Voices in a Rising Sea of Noise. This Cornell Senior Scientist will presents his research about noise levels in the ocean and how they impact North Atlantic right whales. Dr. Clark reveals how in the waters just off the coast of Massachusetts, whales are dealing with a chronically noisy environment that is affecting their day-to-day and long-term survival. An engineer and biologist, Dr. Clark has pioneered ocean listening systems for studying whales and the influence of noises from commercial shipping and offshore energy activities at ocean-basin scales. He led the development and application of the near-real-time, auto-detection network for North Atlantic right whale acoustic monitoring in Boston shipping lanes. “The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire” is the topic of author Stephen Kinzer’s talk on Monday, June 12. Kinzer, author of The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire, brings to light the political debate that erupted at the turn of the twentieth century when the United States found itself with the opportunity to dominate foreign lands. He explores how this debate set America's interventionist course in the world and continues to remain a relevant debate in America's current political affairs.

Livingston Taylor Returns to Isle for One Night Show There are a few tickets left to see American folk singer Livingston Taylor live in concert at the Dreamland Film & Cultural Center on Sunday, July 2. Part of the American music landscape for the past 50 years, Taylor has recorded top-40 hits such as I Will Be in Love with You, I’ll Come Running, I Can Dream of You and Boatman. At home performing a variety of musical genres, his career has touched on folk, pop, gospel, jazz and more. He is a full professor at Berklee College of Music where he teaches stage performance. Performing more than 80 shows per year with 19 studio and live albums in his discography, Livingston has never stopped since the early coffeehouse days that led to tours with Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett and Jethro Tull among others. He is a natural performer who peppers his shows with personal stories, anecdotes, and ineffable warmth that connects him to his fans. This is Taylor’s first performance on-island in nearly a decade. Tickets are $45 for seating in the floor section and $25 for tickets in the upper sections, available from The Dreamland Box Office as well as online at nantucketdreamland.org.

Lessons Learned & Meeting Mr. Rogers

Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition. established 1982

by Robert P. Barsanti I met Mr. Rogers. Apparently, having met the man is a mark of length of servitude to the island. If you can remember him, met him, or fixed his roof, you get a medal or some sort of certificate. Since his show has been off the air for a long time now, he only exists in memes and memories. Twitch just placed the entirety of his show online, so I suppose King Friday and the Trolley can echo again in the digital universe. Unfortunately, we never spoke. In the summer, Mr. Rogers and I would swim at the high school pool in the morning. Through some strange trick of the dawn, the two of us arrived and left at the same time. My memory is that he swam with the equipment of a man of his age and station: goggles, bathing cap, and nose-plugs. But he was there every morning, paddled for a half mile or so, and left by seven o’clock when the water aerobics class would start. The sun would rise over the deep end and color in the far deck and swimmers then creep over the glass, and he would assemble all of his gear, towel off, and walk off to the showers. One of the more treasured stories I have from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood came from a former director of the Nantucket Community School. She got a phone call from the famous children’s TV star at 5:30 in the morning looking for someone to open the pool since the lifeguard had slept in. Naturally, she responded. At the time, I chalked up his peevishness to the entitlement of the summer visitors, but age has whipped me and I call those scars “wisdom.” I can now see him in the true light of the pre-dawn. We need our procedures, we need our patterns, we need our habits. Life nudged me and I fell out of the morning swim habits. Early morning

An Evening of Shipwreck Stories Egan Maritime Institute will host An Evening of Shipwreck Stories at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum this Wednesday June 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Local Nantucket actors will give dramatic readings of famous Cape and Islands shipwreck stories, like that of the W.F. Marshall or the Andrea Doria. Between each story, local musicians are joined by the actors in singing lively sea shanties used by sailors to stay synchronized while working on a ship. The evening is particularly poignant because it is held in the Shannon Gallery surrounded by shipwreck memorabilia. A Massachusetts Humane Society Lifesaving Boat and the Coskata Lifesaving Station Surfboat, along with many quarterboards that washed up on Nantucket’s shores create an enchanting maritime setting to inspire guest’s imagination. Tickets are available by calling 508-228-2505 and are $20 ($10 for Egan Maritime Institute Members). This annual event sells out every year, so advance ticket purchase is recommended. The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum shares the heroic stories of yesterday's maritime heroes through permanent and changing interpretive exhibits and special events. The Museum houses a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts, including beach carts, lyle guns, vintage life jackets, quarterboards, and more. Open through October 9 (Columbus Day), the museum is located at 158 Polpis Road, just 3.5 miles from Nantucket Town and open Monday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from noon to 5 pm. It is accessible by car, General admission is $10, $7 for seniors and students, $5 for ages 6-17. No admission fee is charged for children younger than 6, Egan Maritime Institute members, and members of the military and their families. For details on other special events at the museum, visiteganmaritime.org or call 508-228-1885.

Unofficial Members of the Clean Team by Dr. Sarah T. Bois Director of Research & Education for the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Until recently, Turkey Vultures were a rare occurrence on Nantucket. They would make the occasional Christmas bird count and were listed as a rarity in the 1979 Checklist of Nantucket Birds by Edith Andrews and Ken Blackshaw. Their range has been expanding across Massachusetts and in the late 1990s, a rumor began to circulate about a nest somewhere on-island, possibly in Madaket. Since then, Turkey Vulture populations have been steadily increasing on the Cape and Islands: a sign of warming weather patterns and available habitat. Flash forward to 2017, and we not only have a breeding population, we have a year-round resident population of Turkey Vultures. Turkey Vultures can easily be distinguished from other soaring birds because of their distinctive “Vâ€? shape in the sky. Ungainly on the ground, they are graceful on the wing. They can frequently be seen soaring high above, wings outstretched, rarely beating their wings. They are like drones (or rather drone are like them) keeping an eye to the ground for carrion. Yes, Turkey Vultures eat dead things. Not just any dead thing, however, Turkey Vultures seek out freshly dead animals such as rabbits, deer, other birds, and even fish. Their palate does not discriminate by species. Because of this specialization, Turkey Vultures are performing an important ecosystem service: they are a natural clean-up crew. Imagine what would happen throughout Nantucket’s conservation properties if no animal ever made use of these deceased creatures. What does this mean for the island? In short, it means that Nantucket roads are now a whole lot cleaner. Turkey Vultures are carrion feeders and, thus, do us all a favor by consuming our road kill and other decaying wildlife. As they say, one birds trash is another’s treasure‌ continued on page 18

Nantucket’s Golden Age Nantucket Preservation Trust (NPT) is kicking off Nantucket’s Preservation Month with a new three-day symposium from June 6 to 8 called Nantucket’s Golden Age: Architecture - Interiors - Historic Landscapes. The symposium will take place at various island venues and feature nationally recognized architectural critic and educator, Paul Goldberger, as the keynote speaker. His talk at 5 pm on Tuesday, June 6, in the Unitarian Meeting House on Orange Street is open to the public free of charge. Tickets to remaining symposium events are $595, available by calling Nantucket Preservation Trust at 508-228-1387 or at nantucketpreservationsymposium.org. The program, made possible in part by the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s reMain Nantucket Fund, will focus on the island during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a time of extreme wealth due to Nantucket’s whale-oil industry. Today this rich past is reflected in the preserved town, its public buildings, residential interiors, historic sites and streetscapes that together provide an ideal classroom to rediscover this golden age. The symposium will be an educational tool, help to achieve national recognition for the island’s unique resources, and further the NPT’s mission to preserve Nantucket’s historic architectural heritage for present and future generations. “I do not think there is a town center anywhere in America more beautiful than Nantucket and more powerful as a statement of the idea of community, the idea of buildings working together to make a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts…” commented Architect Critic Paul Goldberger. Participants will get behind-the-scenes tours of private homes, gardens and public spaces in the Main Street neighborhood and in ’Sconset. Lectures by national and local architectural historians, preservationists, and museum curators will include: Paul Goldberger, a leading figure in architecture criticism and contributing editor at Vanity Fair; Peter Kenny, co-president of Classical American Homes Preservation Trust; Catherine Zipf, architectural historian at MIT and Roger Williams University; and Therese O’Malley, expert in American landscape history from the National Gallery of Art. Local speakers include Marty Hylton and Linda Stevenson, co-directors of the University of Florida Preservation Institute: Nantucket, Betsy Tyler, author and local historian, and the NHA’s Director of Properties Catherine Taylor and Curator Mike Harrison.

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Vol. 47 No. 4 • YesterdaysIsland.com

June 1-7, 2017

Page 17

Lessons Learned from page 5

diapers, late night grading, and the press of the “to do” list pulled me from the pool in the morning. It was easier to stay in bed and it was more generous. One young man wakes up at four in the morning and begins bouncing in the crib. Instead of waiting for “someone else” to take charge, you get up, bring the young prince downstairs, and begin the day with Thomas the Tank Engine. The dawn creeps up over the Island of Sodor instead. Cheerios are piled up, milk is poured, and the day begins. Habits are selfish. When you get up every morning and go swimming, as Fred Rogers did, you are telling the other people in your life to step away. Invariably, this annoys them and guilts you, then the music starts in for the resentment/justification Virginia Reel. Someone has to watch the kids, someone has to make dinner, someone has to go to work. The friction of life grinds you down until you run smooth and you can be swallowed whole. But if you can keep the habit going, if you are selfish enough and strong enough to walk out the door in the morning, you can stop time. Each workout is just like another workout. You might be fat, tired, and out of shape, but the road is the road, the water is the water, and the clock is the clock. The weather is different, the clothes are different, and the annoying people in the locker room are different, but the you are the same in the nirvana of your skull. Everyone who loves the pilgrim soul in you respects that. Nobody, not even children, need you to be present 100% of the time. They need to be able to eat dirt, fall over, and annoy the neighbors without a lifeguard to interpret and intervene. Everyone needs to be alone so that they can hear the surf and feel the wind. No parent wants to teach their child how to follow. Leadership is lonely, best get used to it. But the world wants you to stand in line with your money ready. It does not want you in Nirvana, it wants you in the Chicken Box. You need to wait, hope your friends will come to validate you, pay your money, and do the Frug with Joshua Tree. Then, when you have a moment, take a selfie so everyone else in line knows where you are and that you got the new Figawi hat. The best habits happen privately and the world has been drained of privacy. Every worthwhile habit (and several that aren’t) happen after you close a door. You write, you read, you swim, you run, you pray, you go to the Land of Make Believe only after you close a door. Everyone has to be shooed out of your room, and then the door is firmly locked. Our world hates locked doors. It wants you onstage, dancing and singing for the digital audience. They need you. They need to make you feel better, and they need you to make them feel better. They want you to give them “likes” and retweets and comments. Our digital community is a whirlpool of needs. And, like a whirlpool, they will never stop needing. When I think of Mr. Rogers, I don’t think of him on television, wearing the sweaters his mother knit and switching to his sneakers. I think of him in the pool, paddling in a lop-sided crawl up and down the far lane, pausing at each wall, and continuing on. I am sure that, back in my youth, after Sesame Street and before The Electric Company, I learned a few lessons that got somehow buried into the fabric of my character. But, the one I value the most came when the cameras were off and the sky was dark. The lesson repeated over and over and over again, morning following morning. Salvation comes with surrender and solitude.

Turkey Vultures from page 8

Enter our photo contest! Cash prizes! nantucket.net/photos/contests.php

According to a survey by the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association, the top roadkill species on island are cottontail rabbits, snakes of various species, and turtles (mostly painted and snapping); all on the menu for our scavenger friends. Now Turkey Vultures are not the only species that provide this service. Others such as crows, seagulls, and some raptors can also be found picking away at roadkill carrion; however, the Turkey Vulture is the only one that exclusively feeds on carrion, the others being more opportunistic. The Turkey Vulture is also the only one with a developed sense of smell and, thus, can sometimes find treasures that others do not. If you’re lucky enough to find their roost tree, you will note that multiple vultures will roost in the same tree at night (outside of the breeding season). While they may white-wash the surrounding area, without a syrinx (bird voice box) it is not as noisy a place as one might think. Their vocalizations relegated to grunts and hisses. These beautiful (yeah, I said “beautiful) birds are highly specialized with form for function. Their “naked head is free of feathers, causing some to malign this majestic creature for their wrinkly pink heads (the original skin heads). However, a head free of feathers allows this bird to feed on carrion without pesky feathers getting in the way or becoming contaminated. Young Turkey Vultures have black heads and have been misidentified by some as black vultures. Black Vultures are rare in southern New England. One was seen in several spots on Nantucket in spring of 2011. It hung out with several Turkey Vultures while visiting. Chalk it up to an out-of-town guest visiting for the weekend. So, while they may be unattractive to some and get a bad reputation, Turkey Vultures are quite gentle creatures that await the death of another creature before making a meal. Next time we see a Turkey Vulture perched on a branch or soaring in the sky, let’s take a moment to thank them for their service to the island. They are a welcome addition to our year-round population.

Be an Island Ambassador This summer, Nantucket’s Visitors Services Center, a division of the Deparment of Culture and Tourism will continue its exciting volunteer opportunity with its Downtown Island Ambassador Program. Volunteers (ages 15 and up) from the community will walk throughout historic downtown Nantucket where large numbers of out-of-town visitors spend the day or weekend. They will share their love and enthusiasm for all that Nantucket offers with visitors, as well as sharing important information about public services and directions. “The goal of the Downtown Island Ambassador Program is to enhance the visitors’ experience while promoting the terrific amenities of Nantucket in a hospitable manner,” said Melissa Murphy, director of culture and tourism. Each ambassador may sign up for a two-hour shift, often with another ambassador. Shifts will be primarily during the busy summer season (June 24 through September 5, Labor Day Weekend), as well as during our popular holidays and peak weekends including: Fourth of July, Columbus Day Weekend, and Christmas Stroll Weekend. Each unpaid volunteer will attend a brief training session which will include a walking tour of historic downtown Nantucket and the routes to be covered. “We are very excited to continue the Island Ambassador program,” said Nantucket’s Town Manager Libby Gibson, “and we look forward to seeing many community members help us in welcoming and assisting our visitors beyond the walls of the Visitors Service Center.” For details on the program or to become an Island Ambassador for this summer please contact David Sharpe at 508-325-5395 or dsharpe@nantucket-ma.gov or online nantucket-ma.gov/888/Nantucket-AmbassadorProgram.

Bee Thankful for Local Beekeepers by Cara Godlesky The average backyard beekeeper in Massachusetts reported an average of about 44% loss in their operations this winter, according to Bee Informed, a partner of the U.S Department of Agriculture. The winter months are harder on the insects, but the population of bees is seeing a decrease throughout the world. What would you do if you no longer had access to your favorite fruits, vegetables, and nuts? We are thankful to get most of our produce because of the bee population. Without them, agriculture throughout the world would suffer. Apples, almonds, and avocados are just three popular foods that would disappear without bees and their pollination. The loss in the bee population is making the role of beekeeping increasingly important. These backyard beekeepers, who manage 50 or fewer colonies, will aid in the comeback of the bee population. On Nantucket, we are blessed to have abundant food sources for the bees, such as the cranberry bogs, which can allow the insects to thrive. Because of our healthy environment, there are many backyard beekeepers on the island. Among them is David Hitchcock, the owner and creator of Bee Happy Honey Company. Hitchcock has been a practicing apiarist since 1990. He recalls being in fifth grade when his interest in bees first was sparked. His grade school teacher brought into class a bumblebee on a leash made with a piece of fishing line. He was taken back by the whole experience.

Many years later, when a Sears, Roebuck, and Co. catalog appeared in the mail with the centerfold of a beekeeping outfit, Hitchcock’s interest in bees grew even further. He sent away for the outfit and started building parts for his hives. By the time the bees arrived in the mail, he was ready to start his role in apiculture. Hitchcock, who is a cabinetmaker and restores historical homes on Nantucket, is a beekeeper by hobby rather than profession.

“When I started beekeeping, it wasn’t too enticing because honey was only $1.50 a pound,” said Hitchcock. “You’d have to find other ways to make money or keep lots and lots bees.” Now Hitchcock sells honey, bottled in the first American one pound honey bottle designed by Henry Muth in 1850, for $20 a pound. Honey from local sources has become more widely desired in recent years due to increasing support from communities and attention in the media surrounding the bee loss epidemic. Over the course of the season, Hitchcock will harvest about 3,000 pounds of honey. He has about three million bees in his colonies, which are located on Windswept Cranberry Bogs and also at another location a mile and a half from Bartlett’s Farm. Hitchcock’s honey is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and pure. “My honey isn’t cheap but I’m proud of that too,” said Hitchcock. “If you knew the tremendous effort it took to produce a pound of honey, you’d be happy to pay $20 for it.” Any large-scale honey producer or packer will get their honey from many different sources, and sometimes from sources outside of the US. The only way to be certain you are purchasing local honey is to buy if from a local beekeeper. Hitchcock not only uses the honey the bees produce, but the wax as well. He takes the beeswax and creates candles. He got into candle making because one day his daughter asked if they could do it together. He had no knowledge about it, but jumped on the opportunity to start something new. “I have the type of personality that I don’t say no to things. You might miss out on something fun,” said Hitchcock. Beeswax is a much better product for candles than paraffin wax. Beeswax burns longer and cleaner than candles made from other types of

waxes. Hitchcock’s candles burn for up to six or thirteen hours, depending on their size. In Europe during the 1400s, beeswax was such an important commodity that it was accepted as legal tender and could be used to pay taxes and rent. Only royalty, the wealthy, and the church were allowed to burn beeswax during that time. Today, beeswax candles are still valuable and can be pricey because of their efficiency and because there are very few naturally occurring sources of wax for candles besides from bees. Hitchcock built his own candle-dipping carousel that can make 336 candles in one session. He strings the wicks through the candle molds, dips them, removes the wax from the carousel’s frames and packages the finished products all himself. Dipping the candles takes only 30 minutes, but the from start to finish, the entire process will take Hitchcock at least 10 hours. Hitchcock’s dedication to his bees and candle making is admirable. He genuinely enjoys the insects and sometimes he

will sit outside and just watch the bees busily flying in and out of the hive. When he sees a bee in the wild, Hitchcock will put it in his hand and say “hello” and see if the bee will crawl up his finger. You can hear the passion he has about his beekeeping when he speaks about it. “[Apiculture is] fascinating and intriguing. It’s easy to do. In fact I chuckle over the number of people into beekeeping. You show someone a few fascinating points and they learn on their own and it cascades from there,” said Hitchcock. “It’s hard not to do it.” Hitchcock says that one day he will give up his beekeeping and wishes to spend more time on the ocean and sailing instead. He hopes one day to pass on his hives to another aspiring apiarist. “If some young person were to come along and really be enthused by it, I’d be happy to turn it over to them,” said Hitchcock. Hitchcock wants to people to know that bees are nothing to be afraid of. However, the collapse of the bee colonies is something to fear. Bees are essential for pollination. Without them, our food sources would diminish. If you are wondering what you can do to support the bees, avoid spraying or killing hives or bees on your property, buy local honey, and vote to keep neighborhood beekeeping alive in your local town. “I always felt as though since we got all this press [about bee colony collapse], people are nice to beekeepers. They are buying my products and appreciative and respect the honeybee,” said Hitchcock. “I find it really special. It makes my heart soar to know this and it’s really cool, really cool.” Hitchcock sells his product, Bee Happy Honey Co., at Bartlett’s Farm, Petticoat Row Bakery, and from his website at beehappynantucket.weebly.com. Kinzer served as New York Times’s bureau chief in Turkey, Germany, and Nicaragua and as The Boston Globe’s Latin America correspondent. He is a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University and writes a column on world affairs for The Boston Globe. On Monday, June 19, Historian Sarah Crabtree will tell the story of William Rotch, who had the unusual and unfortunate distinction of being accused of disloyalty four separate times by three different governments in less than two decades. Her talk, entitled “Tinker, Traitor, Coward, Spy! The (Mis)adventures of William Rotch,” explains how Rotch's official charges were often complicated and varied in each case, but the underlying accusations were strikingly similar and, for Rotch, incredibly tiresome. She explores how Rotch suffered greatly during this time period, but also profited enormously and found success in an increasingly globalized economy through his male family members. Sarah Crabtree is an Assistant Professor of History at San Francisco State University. She is an National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellow at the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, Rhode Island, which has brought her home to the East Coast to complete the research for her book on William Rotch. New England Aquarium’s Dr. Rosalind Rolland will present “50-Ton Patients: Adventures of a Whale Veterinarian at Sea” on Monday, June 26. She’ll discuss her research on whale health and reproduction, and what whales can reveal to us about the ocean’s health in general. In 1999, Dr. Rolland, a research veterinarian, embarked on a mission to understand why highly endangered North Atlantic right whales were having so few calves. Since that time, Dr. Rolland and her colleagues have developed unique approaches and non-invasive methods to study health and reproduction in these 50-ton leviathans. Her research at the New England Aquarium is focused on development of non-invasive methods to study health, reproduction, and stress responses in free-swimming large whales. She pioneered methods to measure an array of hormones in whales using a variety of sample types including scat, baleen and respiratory vapor (blow). Dr. Rolland and her colleagues created a method to monitor endangered North Atlantic right whales using photographs to assess the health of individual whales and health trends at the population level. She has led projects investigating diseases, marine biotoxins, and the effects of underwater noise on large whales. Dr. Rosalind (Roz) Rolland is the Director of Ocean Health and a Senior Scientist in the Research Department at the New England Aquarium. She also holds a Research Faculty appointment at UMASS-Boston and has held faculty appointments at Tufts, Harvard Medical School, MIT, and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Ticket price for each of these lectures is $10, and admission is free for NHA members. Advance ticket registration for these lectures is recommended at nha.org/ticket. Doors open at 5:30 pm, with the lectures beginning promptly at 6 pm. In addition to the lectures, during the month of June the NHA is also hosting a behind-the-scenes Curator Tour of their new exhibit Out of the Box: Unpacking Nantucket Stories on Thursday, June 8; a talk on Gospel Music and the African American Experience by Professor Robert Darden on Wednesday, June 14; a concert entitled Lessons from History: Oh! That Cello! on Thursday, June15; and a performance by Ann Martindale and Richard Busch entitled Jazz at the Museum on Tuesday, June 20.
