What’s New ON
NANTUCKET
New Home for Bistro at Home
restaurant and bar
There was no shortage of broken hearts on Nantucket last summer when one of the island’s most loved eateries were forced to close their doors. But after losing the lease at their Centre Street location, chef-owners Ruth and Tim Pitts did what many of us had to in the midst of a pandemic: they learned to swerve. Shortly after their closure, Bistro at Home was launched, providing all their home-cooked goodness with the convenience of curb-side pickup. They’re still at it this year only cooking up love from a new location. Conveniently located at 19 Nobadeer Farm Road, they are once again serving up some of the best breakfasts and dinners available on Nantucket. Click on nanucketbistro.com to check out daily menus, follow them on Instagram @nantucketbistroathome and text them at 508-901-1858 to place your order. Don’t wait till the last minute or you could miss out on a favorite.

Live Again & Thinking Outside the Box Another island organization that put on a few pandemic pivots is The Theater Workshop of Nantucket. During 2020, they entertained virtually and even held an old-style telethon, drawing on their deep pool of talent. With indoor gatherings only just beginning to return, TWN looked outside the box for their 2021 performances. Literally. Their in-person shows —Momma Mia and A Grand Night for Singing—will be performed in an open-air venue, complete with an elevated stage plus theatrical lighting and sound, at Bartlett’s Farm. Theater-goers will sit at a table with their parties of 2 to 6 people, with a limited number of single person tables available. Each table is at least six feet from the nearest table, and the positions of tables are staggered for good lines of sight to the stage. Some handicapped seats will be available. Tickets can be purchased online 24/7 at theatrenantucket.org or by phone 508-228-4305 Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 2 pm.

Nantucket Renaissance Opens at the Whaling Museum June 18
The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) presents Anne Ramsdell Congdon’s Nantucket Renaissance, a new featured exhibition opening in the Whaling Museum’s McCausland Gallery Friday, June 18. This exhibition will showcase artwork by island artist Anne Ramsdell Congdon, displaying pieces from the NHA collection as well as from private collections. The exhibit will also include many quotations from the artist, derived from Congdon’s diaries, which were digitized and transcribed in 2019, when the Congdon family loaned the items to the NHA. The excerpts from her diaries give her paintings a new biographical and interpretive depth. This will be paired with a new interactive screen in the gallery to provide visitors and scholars with ready access to Congdon’s words, thoughts, and daily activities. In 1925, when Congdon was 52 and her two boys were grown, she re-dedicated herself to art and launched a remarkably successful 30-year career in painting—becoming the best known and most talented member of the Nantucket Island’s famed Art Colony. The exhibit is curated by guest curator Anne Classen Knutson, Ph.D, with assistance from Steve Langer and research by Claire Jensen.

Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition. established 1982
Things are certainly growing here in Nantucket, and Blooming Bids for Kids is entering their 20th year. This year on June 28, organizers at Fairwinds are planning a hybrdid event that you can attend whether you’re on- or off-island. For two decades, this fundraiser has supported Nantucket children and adolescents and is a celebration of the way islanders embrace horticulture and the beauty of the island. Head to Bartlett’s Farm on June 28 from 9am to 5pm for Blooming Bids for Nantucket Kids. Join them in-person at the farm to view beautiful planters, meet Fairwinds staff, and to take home a special keepsake. A hybrid event, the silent auction will take place online from 9am to 6:45pm. Bid on one-of-a-kind planters designed and donated by professional gardners, landscapers, and skilled hobbyists. Bidding ends when the remote event closes. From 6 to 6:45pm, a virtual celebration will be available for all from any computer or smart device, including special profiles, a musical performance, and a chance to honor the memory of Barb Jones. Barb Jones was a former Fairwinds advocate, Nantucket fixture, horticulturist, and philanthropist. Though she passed away in 2019, her legacy has lasted through all the work she did in life. A woman with a remarkable history of civic leadership and volunteerism, Barb was dedicated to bettering the lives of women and girls around the world. In addition to serving on numerous boards, including the Nantucket Atheneum and the Board of Regents at Georgetown University, Barb was President of the Nantucket Garden Club and was known to many as a dedicated and talented gardener. The featured artist for this year’s event is Hafsa Lewis. The owner and founder of Hafsa and Co., a floral design company that uses flowers to help businesses and brands stand out, Hafsa devoted her undergraduate and graduate studies to continued on page 23

EYE ON STYLE:
Serendipitous Success by Suzanne Daub
If it’s true that you can judge a person by his shoes, then it’s shoes from Respoke that I want to reveal my character! Stylish in a fun and sophisticated way, colorful, and full of life, these handcrafted shoes are wearable art. And this season, designer Michael Tonello has brought them to Nantucket. Respoke began with espadrilles, then patrons began snapping up his designer wedges, mules, and slides. With sneakers now added to the selection, you’ll be finding Respoke shoes on people of all ages and fashion-sense. Michael Tonello describes his success as a shoe designer as being “a bit of an accident.” I sat down with Michael recently to hear his story, which begins with the end of his witty bestseller Bringing Home the Birkin (it’s a perfect summer read). The book “leaves off with me having a closet full of Hermes scarves. I was living in Barcelona, and all Spanish people in the spring buy a pair or two or three of espadrilles… they are cool & comfortable… it’s a two-century tradition. I wanted to be like a native, so I did the same.” But, he explains, the espadrilles never really changed: they were available in the same styles, the same colors, the same fabrics. “When I realized I had all these scarves I wasn’t wearing, I thought it would be really cool if I could get someone to make me a pair of espadrilles from a scarf. I sent out a lot of emails.” Finally one traditional, family-run workshop said it was “an interesting idea…I went to see them in La Rioja with a $400 Hermes scarf, met with them, and the woman said ‘The problem is: if we make espadrilles with a scarf, your toenails will slice through the silk.’” Tonello left the scarf with her– “she thought I was crazy”– and months later, she emailed to tell him she was sending a package. “I thought she was returning my scarf…the next day shoes came…They were the most beautiful pair of espadrilles.” The shoes arrived with a note explaining that the workshop had developed a process that makes it pos-

Everything you need to know about Nantucket is in the classifieds. The stories may not stand up, grab you by the collar, and shout at you; but if you sit down next to them, hold their hand, and listen quietly, the truth will come out. Then, if you stand up, say thanks, and look around, you can see the world from where you stand. I have stayed in an apartment like this one. My apartment was in a basement, with an entrance through the bulkhead doors, mildew in July, and the upstairs rumbling regularly. I didn’t mind; I was working nights until two or three in the morning then I spent the days either working or tanning. I suspect if you found many 50-somethings who have lived on the island since the eighties, they could point out some houses and tell you some tales. That apartment didn’t cost five thousand dollars. The years and inflation have made my rent insignificant, but it was paid in cash every Friday. The rest of the house had several other tenants, all spending roughly what I spent, and all working through the summer either building some sweat savings or beach bank. I could not have paid $5,000 upfront back then and would need a serious conversation with the mirror to pay for it now. But, in the summer of 2021, $5,000 upfront for a
crash pad for the summer, is a great deal. By the time this paper hits the coffee shops, bakeries, and ferries, that rental will have been snapped up. It doesn’t take long or too many online searches to find other homeowners offering up similar rooms for $5,000 a week or, for the more economical, $500 a night. You could see a couple in New Haven, looking at an idle weekend and a generous bank account, signing up for a $1,500 long weekend on Nantucket. “We’ll bring our bikes. It will be fun.” So much of the summer economy on Nantucket is acted out each evening in front of the ice cream shops downtown. One group of people lines up for waffle cones and Watermelon Creams; one group of people scurries behind the counter to fill their orders. Even if the wait is long, the customers understand and tip. But now, as the multi-nationals and the Investment trusts snap up all of the houses under a million dollars (and several over that), the number of beds for ice cream scoopers keeps dropping. That line is going to get longer. If someone is handing out money, I will be there with my hand out. I understand the urge to rent the house out for the summer and live on a lake in New Hampshire. Mrs. MacDonald taught me my multiplication tables at the end of a ruler, and I took her instruction to heart; those “products” would pay for a mortgage and a trip to St. John in February. continued on page 22

by Tim Ehrenberg and Suzanne Bennett You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy chocolate (and books), and that’s kind of the same thing. Now you can do both at one place at Nantucket Bookworks on 25 Broad Street. Suzanne Bennett, Bookworks’ manager, explained “Owner Wendy Hudson has always wanted to have a little extra something here at Bookworks. When Barnaby Bear decided he was ready for his own store, and we now had the space in his old corner, we were wondering what might be a good match. Books and chocolate just made sense to me, especially with our two beautiful island chocolate stores in retirement. Brownies are one of my favorite food groups so a chocolate store and me go together. My chocolate search began and Louis Sherry was on my mind.” The Louis Sherry brand began in 1881 when Louis Sherry introduced the French chocolate-making tradition to New York and quickly established a reputation for excellence. The iconic chocolatier reflects, “Sherry's dedication to quality is present today in every truffle we craft. Only the highest quality ingredients, ethically sourced from Ecuador to Madagascar to the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, are used by our master chocolatier. In celebration of our heritage, each array of chocolates is packaged in the traditional Sherry's tin, a recast of the original, now more than 100 years old.” “Louis Sherry is old school NYC for me,” Suzanne added. There is a nostalgia around the tins. Once the chocolate was gone, the tins continued on as Grandma’s button boxes, sewing kits, and more.” Suzanne continued her chocolate search continued, and she explains “Blanxart, just like one of my favorite books, We the Drowned, was chosen by the cover. I judged, and it worked for me. The two bars we carry are a dark chocolate with Marcona almonds and a milk chocolate with hazelnuts. They are a chunky and satisfying bite, and the packaging... swoon worthy!” It was in April of 1954 when the master chocolatier, Francesc Agrás, embarked on a long journey through the best patisseries and confectioneries in Europe. Blanxart’s website tells us. “His passion for excellence in artisan confectionery was the seed that led to the founding of one of the most renowned Catalan chocolate factories: Bombons Blanxart. It all started in a modest workshop in the neighborhood of Les Corts (Barcelona) and feeding a dream: bringing the best cocoa beans from Ghana, Congo and Guayaquil to chocolate.” Marou Chocolate research was easy. “Graham Greene wrote that whatever you’re looking for you’ll find in Vietnam.” The country’s fine-flavored cacao managed to remain hidden for more than a century. When Marou found it, they quickly understood it would make great chocolate, but they also knew the job required a life-long commitment. They happily obliged. Suzanne says, “Marou is a chocolate that offers 6 single origin bars. This was a choice as it seemed like you could give a gift of a chocolate tasting in one package. Like wine there is so much to learn about chocolate and what the taste can continued on page 24

AAN Hosts Special Online Exhibit: By Land & By Sea
As the air fills with the scent of blooming roses and the harbor moorings bob with boats, the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is opening a new exhibition online entitled By Land & By Sea. It will go live on Friday, June 18 at 10 am with art available 24/7 through Friday July 9 at sales.nantucketarts.org/GiftShop.aspx “By offering these online exhibitions in tandem with our classic in-person gallery shows, we are able to provide our artists with a second venue in which to showcase different works, while the consumers have the convenience of viewing the art in the comfort of their own homes,” said AAN artistic director & curator Robert Frazier. This curated online exhibition will showcase one-of-a-kind landscapes and seascapes, allowing our artists two opportunities to exhibit their work, because the online show is not the same work that is shown in our Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington St. Currently showing in the AAN gallery on Washington Street is an exhibit entitled Blue Periods that features pieces which stress colors found in nature, with a particular focus on blues. “Just as we do in the gallery, when artworks sell, the artist has the chance to add another piece, so there will be additional works added throughout the online exhibition. This will give the public ample opportunity to find the ideal piece for that empty space, new business or home,” added Frazier. Artists Association of Nantucket has in-person and online exhibitions through the season. And mark your calendar for Saturday, July 3 and Saturday August 14, when AAN will host their annual Sidewalk Art Shows, both free to attend at their Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive. For details about the AAN’s 2021 cautiously crafted programs, call 508-2280722 or visit the website at www.nantucketarts.org.

Leave only footprints...
Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Living with Water by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Nantucketers have always been a people who live with water. We travel by water and recreate there. Many of our commercial endeavors depend on the ocean, and we rely on the ocean’s bounty. And now, with climate change impacts, we are going to have to learn to live with water in new ways. We Nantucketers can also make bold moves when necessary. We can be leaders. The early conservation movement is a great example. Between the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Nantucket Land Bank, and Linda Loring, much of our landscape was protected well before there was a crisis, by people who saw a potential problem coming. Nantucket is special in many ways for what we protect and keep – buildings and natural landscapes. So now we face rising seas, increased storm events, and coastal erosion. Again, we can see what’s coming and we, as a community, are figuring out our next steps to “stem the tide.” We are thinking about living with water in novel ways and looking at where we can be innovative to protect our resources and infrastructure, and where we may need to retreat to safer shores. Being resilient means being able to recover from change. Nantucket is looking at issues of coastal resiliency in a few ways to diversify the possibilities and make us more resilient as a community. The more voices that participate in these conversations, the more diverse our toolbox of solutions will be. One initial step came in 2019 when the Town of Nantucket created the Coastal Resiliency Advisory Committee (CRAC) to advise the Select Board on issues of coastal resiliency. The charge of this group, of which I am a member, is to assist with the “…development, oversight, and implementation of a Coastal Resiliency Plan for the Town of Nantucket to address the impact of climate change and sea level rise.” The Town hired the firm Arcadis as consultants to work on creating the Coastal Resiliency Plan. These consultants are working with the CRAC to create the island-wide resiliency plan gathering data across the island. A draft of the plan is due out in September. An important part of that data collection process continued on page 20

Tonello sent more scarves to the workshop in La Rioja and “within a few weeks 25 pairs were gone, but I still wasn’t thinking of it as a business.” A month or two later Michael traveled to New York City and met with Fern Mallis at The Polo Bar. “I gave her a pair of espadrilles during dinner, and when Ralph Lauren came to our table, Fern introduced me and showed him the espadrilles. He said ‘these are BRILLIANT’ and brought me over to another table to tell them about my espadrilles…” Seated at that other table were creative directors and buyers from Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. They all wanted to carry the unique espadrilles. “We made them, handdelivered them, and that was the start of Respoke.” From inspiration to business and from wholesale to opening their own stores, Tonello and associates Chris and Adrianna have barely a mocontinued on page 19

ment to spare. They travel to Paris and Florence to buy new scarves and look for vintage scarves at auction houses. “We find something new and different every time. That keeps it exciting and fun.” Respoke shoes are still completely handcrafted in the 200-year-old workshop in Northern Spain from vintage designer scarves, though Tonello’s designs now include scarves by Pucci, Gucci, Chanel, and Alexander McQueen in addition to Hermes. “The whole [process] is magical.” Tonello had vacationed for years in Provincetown, MA, so that is where he opened his first store three years ago. “We only sold espadrilles, and we blew it out of the park!” Last year he signed a lease on a shop here on Straight Wharf, but pandemic restrictions made it impossible to proceed. They gave use of the space to the Artists Association of Nantucket for the 2020 season to open a satellite gallery. This June, Respoke opened its doors on Nantucket. Nantucket is not new to Michael Tonello: he grew up on Cape Cod and came to our island every summer with his parents. He’s confident that Respoke shoes will be a perfect fit for Nantucket style. “There’s a side of Nantucket that loves something unique, opulent, special… but it has to be durable: people go to the beach, they sail… it’s an old Cape Cod mentality… it checks all the boxes,” he explained. Respoke shoes “are durable, super comfortable, opulent, but not that precious.” Respoke carries shoes to fit all sizes: men, women, and children. Tonello says his team loves being creative and taking on new projects. He describes their brand new sneaker designs as “spectacular…they contain no plastic: only gum rubber with silk uppers, and they’re lined with French terry so they can be worn with bare feet.” Respoke also just started doing ready-to-wear: “Italian cashmere with scarves, linen bucket hats…all embellished with silk.” And on the horizon, they are developing more silk footwear (high-top sneakers and some new women’s designs), and they’re looking to add some new categories. “I’m one of those people who feels if something once was beautiful it is still beautiful.” Respoke is open daily at 41 Straight Wharf and online at respoke.com

is understanding public opinion on coastal issues from all interested parties. Stakeholders include residents, visitors, renters, home owners, businesses, and anyone with an interest in coastal Nantucket. That means you! The overarching goal of the Coastal Resiliency Plan is to develop a plan for the whole island that addresses coastal erosion, sea level rise, and coastal flooding. Over the past year, Arcadis has been speaking with many stakeholder groups. In February, the consultants presided over the first open house with more than 150 participants. During the two hour session, break out groups discussed issues and vulnerable areas around the island. All participants were heard and notes taken to incorporate these opinions into the final plan. Now, there is one more opportunity to participate in the CR plan’s creation. Thursday June 24, the next public open house will be held from 6 to 8 pm. Ideas and solutions for different neighborhoods will be presented and open for discussion and comment. The more people involved at this stage, the better the CR plan will represent the Nantucket community in all its forms. There will also be breakout sessions available in Spanish. To register for the virtual open house, go to the Town’s CR website at nantucket-ma.gov/2030/Coastal-Resilience-Plan. While the CR plan will be comprehensive for the island, other measures on Nantucket focus on specific sectors of the island community. In May of 2021, the Town released the Resilient Nantucket Toolkit focusing on historic structures with climate change in mind. According to the Town’s website, “This toolkit is intended to provide information on flood risk, flood preparedness, flood insurance, flood recovery and flood adaptation alternatives useful for historic properties, cultural sites, and the island’s larger cultural landscape.” Funded with a Municipal Vulnerability Planning grant with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the toolkit is an important step in readying our historic resources for living with water. The CR plan and the Resilient Nantucket toolkit are both measures taken by the Town of Nantucket to prepare the island for climate change impacts with practical approaches and plans and projects for the future. ReMain Nantucket took another approach to thinking of these issues and embracing ideas of living with water. They created the Envision Resilient Nantucket

Design Challenge which began in spring of 2020. The Challenge for five participating universities was to redesign and reimagine Nantucket with predicted sea level rise in the near and long term. The teams were from Yale School of Architecture, Northeastern University College of Arts, Media and Design, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, University of Florida, and University of Miami. Students primarily in architecture, but also landscape architecture, environmental sciences and other majors, created innovative solutions for various study areas located between Jetties and the end of Washington street including downtown. Throughout the spring 2021 semester, student groups were supported by their own academic advisors as well as a team of local advisors. Weekly lectures from experts around the globe were supplemented with “office hours” from the local advisors. The results of the challenge were presented at an event earlier in June. Project ideas were broad in scope and included ideas like making Washington Street a walkway and bird sanctuary and re-creating saltmarsh habitat in that area. Others focused on multi-use housing and buildings that changed with generations and additional sea level rise. Some ideas included more nature-based approaches like increasing protective saltmarshes and adding aquaculture resources. Students reimagined the steamship dock while also thinking about public access, commercial endeavors, and housing. To see these new ideas and the presentations of the final results, visit the Envision Resilience Nantucket website at envisionresilience.org/meet-the-teams. Final design proposals will be on display all summer on the second floor of the Thomas Macy Warehouse building at 12 Straight Warf. The exhibition, developed in partnership with the Nantucket Historical Association and the Artists Association, will run from July through December 2021. “Through the exhibition, the public is invited to explore the history of Nantucket’s relationship with water and the island’s resilience and adaptability to change.” Interested in a deeper dive? The speaker series for the Envision Resilience students is still available for free on the ReMain website at envisionresilience.org/speaker-series The 10-week series features more than 20 speakers covering all aspects of climate change affecting Nantucket and the world. With so much going on around coastal resiliency, sea level rise, and climate change, it may be difficult to sort through all the different events, news, challenges, and exhibitions. It’s a complex problem, and it will take many types of solutions to be resilient. We are fortunate our small island is already looking so far ahead, being innovative, and trying a multi-pronged approach.

I’m not the only one doing the math, though. In the last ten years, off-island investors and real estate trusts have bought at least 240 year-round island homes. That money has left the island permanently. Now, an off-island realtor can rent a house to a visitor, take her check, send her the keys, and it’s all done. At one time the rent, the realtor’s fee, and the mortgage would all make a stop in Nantucket pockets; someone would have gotten his beak wet, be it Frenchie or Hank the Bank. Now, an islander may mow the lawn or clean the toilets. The rest of the money never even gets its feet wet. A red headed sandwich maker once told me that “If you own it, it’s yours.” As a community, we have been selling what we own for years. As the great wave of money has swept up the island, we have sold restaurants, utilities, banks, hotels, stores, and homes to offisland interests. The jobs that sat behind the counters, at the electric company, at the banks, and the real estate offices, have all drifted off-island, along with a healthy chunk of the building trades. Islanders have made a lot of money, then packed up the car and built a beautiful house on a lake in Maine. But they can’t come back here. Today, Nantucket, and America, run on poverty. Behind the swinging kitchen doors of the $50 tenderloin au poivre are cooks and dishwashers that will make a little more than that for the night. On the seat of the lawnmowers are men who are packed ten to a basement. On the construction sites are builders who sleep

in their vans. They aren’t saving for a mortgage. Desperate for the money, they will do the work. Most of the men who went on whaling voyages signed on for the same reason. One hundred and ten students graduated Nantucket High School this weekend. The weather cleared for them, and the graduation glowed under that rarest of things: the June sun. Smiles, hats, awards, scholarships, and a car parade downtown. From where we were in March, graduation is a miracle of science and peer pressure. Some graduate received the UPON scholarship this year; the Unimportant People of Nantucket. I have always thought of those people as old Whalers, people who tend bar, or deliver lumber or pump propane. The Unimportant People of Nantucket build the community. They come to town meeting. They bring their kids to Main Street on Halloween. They stand in the red ticket drawing. And they graduate from Nantucket High. How many will be here in five years? How many will be here when they are forty? How many will be fire fighters, cops, plumbers, nurses, or teachers? Our island, surfing on this amazing wave of money, can’t house it’s doctors or nurses. If it can’t keep people with six-figure paychecks, how is it going to keep the Unimportant People of Nantucket? Everything you need to know about Nantucket is in the classifieds. the field of psychology, and her passion for both mental health and flowers are guides on all of her endeavors. Her flowers have spread cheer during Flower Fridays for the past several weeks (the last Flower Friday is June 18 at Olivela on Centre Street), and Lewis created the floral installation that adorns the entryway to the 2021 Blooming Bids for Kids at Bartlett’s Farm. Originally held in support of Mentoring Youth Nantucket, the event now helps underwrite Fairwinds’ continuum of behavioral health services for children and adolescents and also celebrates the unique ways in which the island embraces horticulture. For 60 years, Fairwinds has been Nantucket’s counseling center, providing the island with quality and confidential mental health and addiction care to people of all ages regardless of an individual’s ability to pay The funds raised by the Blooming Bids for Nantucket’s Kids event will support children’s services at Fairwinds, including outpatient therapy, psychiatry and medication management, developmental testing, in-home therapy, therapeutic mentoring, and more. tell you about where it came from. These bars paired with a book is such a great gift idea.” French Broad’s beginnings have helped to shape every piece of French Broad Chocolate; from a tiny cafe in Costa Rica to internationally celebrated bars and bonbons. “French Broad came on board,” Suzanne explained, “because they offer chocolate chips. Chocolate chips don't have to be just for baking. I personally love snacking on them. We did and do a lot of baking in our house, and I was fortunate to have some great chocolate chip connections from Neil at Le Languedoc to Matt at Something Natural. We always have a bumper crop on hand. I was always getting a knock on the door for a cup of chips from our kid neighbors for cookie baking. They never made cookies, this I know,” Suzanne added with a knowing smile. “While on my chocolate search, I ran into my friend Rita. Rita told me about a great place in North Truro called Chequessett Chocolates—it’s almost local,” she added. Chequessett Chocolate explains: “We carefully handcraft our chocolate in small batches from fine-flavor, sustainably grown cacao beans at our workshop on Cape Cod. We believe in promoting sustainable agriculture and our direct trade relationships with producers ensure that our supply chain is ethical and environmentally sound. Blending high quality cacao with the purest ingredients available, we create chocolate that is both exceptional in taste and wholesomely decadent.” With names like Nantucket Nib Crunch, Monomoy Mochaccino, and ‘Sconset Brown Butter Sage, this next-door neighbor has found the perfect home at Nantucket Bookworks. I have always thought of Bookworks as one of my very places to pick up a unique gift for someone. Something that you can’t find anywhere else. Something that is so specific to a person, for that quirky friend’s birthday or for the one-ofa-kind family member who has everything. This chocolate corner only enhances that sentiment. Their selection of chocolates from around the world—especially researched, chosen, and curated by Suzanne—offer a perfect option for every sweet tooth.
