AAN’s June Artist in Residence Last year, the Artists Association of Nantucket opened the much anticipated Visual Arts Center, and just one of their many expanded art education offerings is an Artist in Residence program from November-June, which gives island artists a chance to learn from and interact with a broader range of experienced artists. The June Artist in Residence at the VAC is Frank Costantino. A first-time visitor to AAN, Frank is an artist from Winthrop, MA who specializes in painting en plein air. He will teach a Plein Air Watercolor class at Brant Point on June 15 and 16. In conjunction with the class, he will also give an demonstration during AAN’s 2016 Plein Air Nantucket painting festival at Brant Point on June 15 at 9 a.m. To round out his stay, Frank will exhibit his work and judge the art in the 2016 Plein Air Nantucket exhibition on Sunday, June 19, at the Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. “Frank is a talented watercolorist,” said AAN adult education program director Mary Emery Lacoursiere. “As an Artist in Residence, he will stay in AAN’s studio apartment for his visit and work in one of the VAC’s new studios,” said Lacoursiere. “We invite artists and art enthusiasts to come and meet him while he is on island.” “It’s unusual to see a watercolor artist paint en plein air,” said Lacoursiere. “It should be quite inspiring to see him working with this medium at Brant Point. Even if people don’t want to join the class, they should come and see him do his demonstration. It will be fascinating.” Registration information for the Plein Air class is available at Nantucketarts.org. The Brant Point demonstration will take place on Wednesday, June 15 at 9 am, during his Plein Air class. The AAN’s 2016 Plein Air Nantucket exhibition will be held on Sunday, June 19 at the Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. The exhibition reception starts at 6 p.m. with the presentation of the Frank Swift Chase Awards. For details about Costantino and the AAN’s artist in residence program, as well as a schedule of classes and public programs, visit Nantucketarts.org.

We all have that one friend. She’s single. She’s messy. And when you go over to her house the only thing in her fridge are condiments. And we all have that other friend. She’s married. She’s a neat freak. And she thinks she’s Martha Stewart or at least pretends to be on Facebook. Now, what if these two friends moved in together for a week, a month, or even a day or two? It would be pretty funny, right? That is the basis for this hilarious comedy, The Odd Couple, a Neil Simon classic that has been repeated in theme ever since its original debut in 1965. We’ve seen it a thousand times, whether its with two very different cousins in the eighties sitcom Perfect Strangers, or simply redone for today’s television with actors Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon on CBS. The gist of the humor never ages, even as the play itself continues to do so. And here, for Nantucket audiences only, we are FINALLY gifted with a female version, a delightful re-mix using the play’s original language and lending it to the female voice of 2016. Directed by Justin Cerne, this hilarious play opens with four women effortlessly juggling dialog that makes the sides of your belly ache with laughter as they sit around a table playing Trivial Pursuit. Like any other girls night out, the fun is almost contagious, and you just want to run up on stage and grab a seat next to them for some gab, some jabs, and some trivia. Olive (impressively played by Nantucket’s own Sarah Fraunfelder) is the hostess, and also that messy, careless friend we all know and love. When her guests, a still-in-uniform policewoman named Mickey (played by Casey Boukus), a chain-smoking bleached-blonde named Sylvie (played by Ellie Cornell), a leopard-print-loving straight talker named Renee (played by Fecontinued on page 17

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket
Clinton Folger’s Horsemobile And His Fight to Allow Cars by Amy Jenness In June of 1916 the Inquirer & Mirror ran an item in its “Waterfront” column recounting the story of a recent Nantucket visitor looking to hire a car. The man, who had never been here before, asked a group of local men for information about the island. “You see this is my first trip down here and I am in love with the place just from the view I gained in approaching it on the steamer and in breathing this fine air,” the newspaper quoted him saying. Then he asked how to get a car. “As I tenderly as possible the news was broken that automobiles were barred from Nantucket and that if he wanted to go to 'Sconset he would either have to go by train, in a carriage behind a horse, or ‘hoof it.’ Evidently it was a severe blow to his Nantucket enthusiasm.” The visitor left and did not return. The first cars arrived here in 1900 and frightened PHOTO COURTESY NHA the horses so badly that buggy passengers feared for their lives. Nantucketers did not embrace the automobile and in 1908, under pressure from the island, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a law banning cars from the island from May to September.

A Walk with a Not Good Dog
Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition. established 1982
by Robert P. Barsanti Summer takes a while to settle into the island. For most of New England, Memorial Day weekend means finding the cooler, a swimsuit that still fits, and a lake. The Red Sox are still in first place, the grill just got its gas tank refilled, and thunder rolls up the valley. Out here, on God’s last best island, the first tenants are in and the heat is still on, Chad and his bros are carrying twelve packs up the middle of the street (just like it is in the catalogs), and the polar fleece pullover needs another wash. Still, everything that lives out here is trying to push the sky into the right season. The daffodils have long since fallen, and the roses are heaving their way out. The hedges have swelled and hidden the neighbors, the stripers are running, and the ducklings have returned to stop traffic. Curls of cloud flip over head, the wind remains raw, and beaches are cold, but the bushes teem with deer, rabbits, and loud birds. My boon companion has joined in the chorus. Surgery has long since robbed him of the primary drive of the spring, but the itch is hard for him ignore. He sits at the screen door and gets teased by the bunnies and the robins. He barks a quick warning to them, which they ignore. He hunches over, stares, then comes and nudges my hand off the table. I shove him away. Then he noses me again, and I shove him away. Then, he unveils his teeth and circles my wrist, as if I am a duck to be swum to shore. Something must be done. So, I find my shoes, fill a pocket with treats, leash the pup, and pull the boys out of the digital pool and pack into the world of wind and grass. When the boys were younger and smaller, I could always find a playground for them to spin about at. Even in the gray summer, I would bundle them off and push them out into the sandy playgrounds. Failing that, we could visit the pool or the ice rink or we could walk the beaches picking up plastic bottles. But somehow, as they have aged, the options have grown

Location, Location, Location You made sure to follow this rule with your real estate acquisition and should do the same with any wine purchases. Think of your wine collection as a buried treasure here on island just waiting to be discovered. Rule of thumb is that wine should be kept in the darkest, coolest corner with little to no vibration. This means do not store your wine treasures in a picturesque wrought iron wine rack in direct sun light. Not only will this ray of sunshine make the temperature of your wine fluctuate throughout the day, which is detrimental to the juice inside the bottle, it will also be unsightly as the bottles quickly attract any particles of dust in close proximity. While many home chefs cook with wine (and sometimes even add it to the food), it is best to avoid the concept of easy wine access and never store wine in your kitchen. Again, the irregular rise and fall in temperature while you are baking Nantucket Bay scallops or sautéing Bartlett Farm vegetables is not recommended. Never store your wine on top of the fridge - not only does heat rise in the kitchen, the vibration of the compressor will shake the wine causing it to lose its flavors and aromas. Keep It Cool Your wine collection should be stored and remain at a constant, steady temperature in order for it to mature properly and not suffer from premature development. The range of acceptable temperatures for a wine cellar is dependent on the types of wines that you keep. If your wine is intended for long-term aging, you could set your gauge as low as 55 degrees F (13 degrees C). Most wine cellars are in the range of 58-62 degrees F. High quality white wines, such as white Burgundies and Champagnes, should be kept at the lower end of the temperature spectrum, while big hearty reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah could be stored between 64-68 degrees F. Lighter styles reds like Pinot Noir, Barolo and Chianti would fall in between this span. All wine should definitely be stored at less than 70 degrees F without any negative effect over a long period of time. A variety of wine coolers now have dual temperature zones that have two temperature compartments that make it ideal for storing both white and red wines.

Your ‘Castle in the Sand’ on Nantucket is finally renovated after many months of patience and last minute fire drills to meet your deadline. As if you weren’t stressed enough about getting the final decorating touches in place before guests arrive to our magical island, you wanted to make sure that your state-of-the-art, show piece of a wine cellar was also stocked for your drinking pleasure, and also to impress the dignitaries you will soon be hosting. The amount of time, effort and dollars spent on a wine collection, no matter how big or small, is an investment that needs to be well protected like any other asset. In honor of National Preservation Month with the Nantucket Preservation Trust, here is a smart reference list of important things you need to know for preservation of your wine investment.

The Daggers, Cape Cod’s aural architects of the indefatigable dance party, come to Nantucket on June 8th to get you up on your feet at Cisco Brewery. With a combination of styles incorporating the best of R&B, rock, funk and punk, The Daggers can play as exquisitely as the light from a summer sunset or with as much attitude as the wind whipping from a Nor’easter. This is a band that likes to have fun. Their original songwriting demonstrates a deft storytelling style and leaves room for the kind of refrains that could someday become rock anthems. Join them Wednesday, June 8th at Cisco Brewery from 4:30 to 7 pm, Bartlett Farm Road.

It is her husband on the line, and he says that she went missing as soon as he informed her he was leaving her. This news rocks the entire crew until suddenly there is knock on the door and it is their distraught and highly dramatic friend who enters, reeling from her heartbreak. Both in part to comfort her distraught friend, and to seek some company for herself, Olive asks Florence to move in. The offer immediately lights Florence up like a Christmas tree. “I can do so much with this place!” She teems, looking around the messy apartment. Olive, who personally has not had much luck in love, with a recent break up from her gambling addict husband, should have taken heed at Florence’s intentions then, but if she had we would never be able to watch the hilarity that ensues between this truly odd couple. The second act is where the real laughs are, when Spanish neighbors Manolo (played by Adam Sodofsky) and Jesus (played by Chris Costa) enter the scene with their language barrier flirtations and surprising emotional empathy for the distraught Florence. But the real magic is how this play, and all those versions that have come before it, can highlight a standard in our society – marriage – and successfully make it hilarious. Seeing this relationship sour between friends makes us laugh at our own struggles with spouses, and reminds us to keep the humor alive. The Odd Couple is playing at Bennett Hall at 62 Centre Street Wednesday through Sunday until June 18. For tickets, visit theatreworkshop.com.

smaller for us. They can compete in road races or hang out at the library or go sailing, but there isn’t much I can do other than wait outside in the car and buy them Watermelon Creams. Soon enough, I won’t have to even do that. So the four of us—boys, man, and dog—head to Sanford Farm. We have walked from the parking lot to the barn several times. The boys find that distance just inside the realm of tolerable, and I find it just outside the realm of physical comfort. Unfortunately, my boon companion is not a good dog. A good dog would stay with you, or at least stop when you called his name and come trotting back with his head and his tail down. A good dog will not start singing all five choruses of the Song of His People. The Not Good Dog sees another person, or another dog, or a blowing water bottle and goes off, hell bent for leather and bellowing his friendly aria. If he is on leash, and I am well braced, he sprints until he is brought up short, then he tries again and again. But if I am listening for ghosts or looking at the clock tower, and the mood strikes, he is gone. What follows is regrettably predictable. I follow at a jog, hoping that my heart will hold up while eighty-five pounds of toothed yellow lab goes thrill seeking. Should it be an islander, familiar with such shows of loud love from Not Good Dogs, there will be a smile and a firm bracing in case his love becomes overwhelming. For others, who have dogs that can fit in purses and eat sweets from their fingers, they see all of the barking fur and teeth come at high speed and think that they should have named their pet “Snack” and been done with it. Inevitably, she will bend down to pull her pet “Snack” up into the air and the Not Good Dog will think that he will have to leap up and say “Hello.” The sweaty middle-aged man jogging afterwards does not help calm anyone. Apologies are said, leashes are retrieved, and the world is dragged firmly back to regular order. The boys lead the way today. Both of them have grown tall and have created lives for themselves in the shadows of their parents’ love. Everything in the light seems fine so we trust that years of care, support, and Blue’s Clues will keep them undamaged in those growing shadows. I follow along with the boon companion who remains enamored of horse droppings and something dead that smells delightful. At a lull, the Not Good Dog comes nosing up to the boys and bangs them in the shins. My oldest young man stops and waits for me to catch up. “I’ll take him from here, Dad.” I give him the leash. Not without hesitation or the screaming of my better angels. The new season has risen around us, in spite of raw wind and sky, and the path has runners, walkers, bicyclists, other dogs, and one incontinent horse somewhere before us. The young man who escaped from his crib and who called 911 to see a police car and who once came home with only one shoe was now in charge of the rampaging love of my Boon Companion. Engrossed in their own conversation about something called Overwatch, they out paced their dear old Dad and left me about fifty yards behind. My Boon Companion, eater of my treats and demander of my scratches, didn’t even look back at me. He didn't go off a roaming either, even when the horse passed. Two young men in short sleeves walking a Good Dog (on a leash, still). Time, tide, and the season press forward, withhold what we will from them. The warmth will finally fill the ocean, and the sky and yet another summer will pass beyond us. I will put away the polar fleece for another season, hope that the Red Sox bullpen doesn’t blow up, and buy them yet another round of ice cream.

Page 19
Award-Winning Artisan since 1981 from page 8
Don’t Rock the Baby (Bottle) Wine should be stored on its side, laid down in a horizontal position. This enables the wine to remain in contact with the cork to keep it moist. When the wine cork is moist, it will expand (as anything soaked in liquid will do) in order to fill the neck of the bottle. If the cork were to dry out, it could shrink or crumble which would allow the wine to seep out of the top. If wine can exit the bottle, then air (made of oxygen) could get into the bottle leading to oxidation. This effect would age your wine rapidly to a point of no return. Make sure that the wine label is facing up so that you are able to read what it is at a quick glance. Once your wine is in place, it is best not to disturb it by twisting and turning it to see what you have in there. Tag It Labeling each of the bottle necks with a wine tag will be extremely helpful as you make your best attempt to keep track of your wines. This will allow you to view your sleeping beauties without shaking the bottle or its contents every time you want to see what is in your collection. While there are numerous online cellar management programs that can help you to catalogue (and assess the estimated value of your wine, which could be an advantage for insurance purposes), sometimes a good ol’ Excel spreadsheet or even a hand-written grid kept close by is helpful to jog your memory of what you have remaining (or advise you as to what your kids drank last time they used the house). Cheers Worthy If you happen to buy a case of one particular wine, or even several bottles of the same selection and want to know where the wine is in its course of development, experiment by sampling a bottle to see how it has evolved in your cellar conditions. Log your wine notes each time you do this to know if you think you should be drinking some of your wines sooner (based on your taste preference) or hold on to them longer for a maximum enjoyment at a later time. While it is common to hold on to that one special bottle for the most momentous of occasions, this practice leads more to the wine being aged for too long and disappointment rather than pleasure. Every day is a special day and should be celebrated with a wine that will make it memorable and enjoyable for you on any occasion.

Horsemobile from page 5
A few off-islanders challenged the law, but Nantucket remained car-free until 1913 when Clinton S. Folger, who owned a livery business and was a vocal automobilist, was given the contract to deliver the mail. The next week he travelled to Boston and purchased a car. The Inquirer & Mirror noted Folger’s disregard of the car ban. “The 1909 law stands unchanged on the statute books today, and the report that one of the island liverymen has actually taken steps to bring a machine to the island, has caused a feeling of unrest, both among the islanders and summer visitors who seek to keep the machines away.” In response, Nantucket selectmen voted to ban automobiles year round. Two weeks later Folger and his Overland car arrived on the steamer Sankaty and a crowd gathered to watch it come off the boat. Some predicted a police arrest or a riot, while others cheered as the car rolled down the ramp. Folger disembarked peacefully and drove his car to ‘Sconset on the first mail run. Both supporters and critics carefully watched to see how much Folger’s car tested the will of the selectmen. Within weeks town leaders called a hearing. William A. Thibodeau, attorney for the Automobile Legal Association, spoke in favor of allowing cars on the island and said he represented Clinton S. Folger and 781 Nantucket taxpayers who had signed a petition. He argued, “The law plainly says that no regulation shall be valid which excludes automobiles from any state highway, yet the selectmen have actually done so, inasmuch as they have excluded automobiles from all roads leading to the state highway on Nantucket island.” As debate heated up, Folger dug in. On the days of his ‘Sconset run, he hitched a pair of horses to the car and towed it through town. Folger’s “Horsemobile” made headlines in off-island newspapers and soon people from all over the country wrote letters to the Inquirer & Mirror rooting for Folger and his cause. Folger was fined and called into court repeatedly, but despite his trouble with the law, his car did a brisk business. Doctors called upon him for house calls. Residents living in rural areas called upon him for rides to town. Yet he still had not won over the majority of town voters, who declined to support repealing the car ban several times between 1914 and 1917.

By 1916 many summer people, accustomed to driving on the mainland, brought their cars and used them. When they got in trouble with the law, the Massachusetts Automobile Association represented them. The convenience and popularity of cars proved undeniable. When the Nantucket Railroad closed in 1917, 36 years after its inaugural run, PHOTO COURTESY NHA railroad owners cited the popularity of automobiles as the main reason for the decline, even though cars were still illegal on Nantucket. By 1918, Nantucket was the only Massachusetts town that didn’t allow cars and the tide of public perception started to turn in support of allowing them on the island. Perhaps Nantucket voters felt they could no longer stop progress or perhaps they simply changed their minds, but four years after Folger first drove off the boat, they narrowly elected to repeal the automobile ban. Three weeks before the vote, a letter appeared in the Inquirer & Mirror signed “Old Fogey.” “The scrapping of the railroad has caused me to look backward. I remember when the railroad came, for I did not want it to come. How we did kick about it and how we predicted all sorts of calamities. But it came – and now we are all sorry it is going to leave us. The letter continues to list other modern improvements that met resistance on Nantucket, like the water company, electric street lights, the telephone, and the “auto-chemical” fire engines. In regards to allowing cars on Nantucket’s streets, the writer says, “I’m almost tired of bucking against these modern inventions. They come in time and then we are glad they are here. Suppose it will be that way with the automobile after it gets here. Probably it will prove a blessing like the rest of the things we bucked against. I’m against it just the same from force of habit, for I’ve been against everything else that spells progress and guess this is about the last chance I’ll have to kick, for my kicking days are almost over.” Amy Jenness is the author of “On This Day in Nantucket History,” available in local bookstores

Featured Restaurant:
Take-Out Around the Island If you’re on the island long enough you will eventually hear the joke “What do you call a Nantucketer with two jobs?” “Retired.” The work schedules most island residents have leads us to rely on takeout food options on a regular basis. Lucky for us, Nantucket “fast food” choices are much better than those in most of America: no Big Macs and Nuggets for us! Within our range of 14 miles by 7 miles, we count more than two dozen options for takeout. Several of Nantucket’s fine dining restaurants like FiftySix Union, The SeaGrille, and Atlas also offer menu items to go, which is a real plus when you’re hungry for Clams Casino and Truffled Frites or Parmesan Crusted Swordfish or Lamb Skewers and Carolina Pulled Pork but your 2-year-old is not ready for a civilized meal. Here are some staff picks and insider tips for takeout food on Nantucket...
Downtown Nantucket The Bean: 4 India St. 508-228-6215; TheBeanTakeout.com This landmark Nantucket coffeehouse is operated by the island’s only coffee roaster, so you can count on getting a great cup of coffee. When they expanded their location, they added a delicious selection of soups, salads, flatbreads, and sandwiches. Our favorites are the Funghi Sandwich (roasted portobello, provolone, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes, & balsamic ) with an Iced Coffee or the Tacchino (turkey, spinach, tomato, onion, Swiss cheese, banana peppers, & Russian dressing) with a Dirty Chai. TIP: order online at thebeantakeout.com for fast service.
Centre Street Bistro: 29 Centre St. 508-228-8470 Chef owned & operated, this is where many in-town business owners order their lunches to go. We’ve sampled each item on the menu and loved every one, which make choosing favorites particularly difficult. Their Tomato Soup is the best we’ve ever tasted. And we keep going back for their Crispy Chicken Salad (avocado, tomato, bacon, blue cheese, & chicken breast) and their luscious Goat Cheese Tart over greens with raspberry sauce. TIP: Add a freshly baked cookie to your order. Doesn’t matter what kind, just get one!
Easy Street Cantina: Broad & Easy Sts. 508-228-5418 Their menu includes tacos, fresh seafood, burgers, sandwiches, subs, and wraps, breakfast sandwiches—most items are under $10, which makes it a great place to feed the family! Everything here is made fresh to order, even the fried clams are hand-breaded, and the cookies are freshly baked from the Nantucket Cookie Com-

pany in the same location. Our top picks here are Fish Tacos, the hefty Beef Burrito, and their Cheddar Fries. TIPS: Dust the fries with Bartholomew’s Nantucket Spice before you dip into the creamy cheddar sauce and if you’re heading Off on the boat, call in a order for a Box of Tacos for the trip across the pond.
Rose & Crown: 23 S. Water St. 508-228-2595 Burgers are our first choice for takeout from this island hotspot! Our top choice is their Smokehouse Burger, with smoked gouda, bacon, BBQ sauce and crispy onion straws. Our staffer who doesn’t eat meat, swears by the Crown’s Fried Oyster Po’Boy. TIP: Don’t take them out—order these to eat in and listen to the live music Thursday and Saturday evenings.
The Jetties at Jetties Beach: 508-228-2279 While not exactly downtown, Jetties is an easy walk from town, and well worth it. They’re open only weekends now, but on June 16 they’ll be open 7 days a week for the summer. With a location directly on the beach, it’s a short walk from the restaurant to your beach blanket for a picnic while you watch a beautiful sunset. Our top choices here are the summery Caprese Thin Crust Pizza (roasted tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, alfredo sauce, and balsamic drizzle) and the Steak Gorgonzola Alfredo, with a 7-ounce filet nestled into the linguini alfredo. TIP: Arrive right at 5pm for dinner; The Jetties is very popular with locals who stop by after work.
Mid-Island Downyflake: 18 508-228-4533

If you love breakfast, you’ll love The Downyflake. In business for 80 years, this eatery is a Nantucket tradition that serves breakfast all day, every day (plus lunch Monday-Saturday). Their

entire menu is available for takeout, but it’s their Donuts (espcially the coconut) and their Scotch Irish Cake that our staff cannot resist for takeout! TIP: Go early, especially on Sunday when this is a favorite stop after church, they open at 6 am; and ride your bike here to avoid parking congestion.

tomatoes, red onion, tzatziki sauce, on pita bread. TIP: Parking is in the back, but ride your bike to Yummy for an easier approach, or take the bus because they’re right next to an NRTA stop.
A Little Farther Out
Faregrounds: 27 Fairgrounds Rd. 508-228-4095
(ride a bike, take an NRTA bus, or drive)
Centrally located with plenty of parking, Faregrounds is the venue for Rotary lunch and for many island functions They’re known for their pizza, but our favorite takeout foods from Faregrounds are their Potato Skins stuffed with broccoli, bacon, and cheese and their Faregrounds Fish Fry with fresh cod. TIP: Have a Strawberry Lemonade or Peach Mojito in their pub while you wait for your takeout, but ONLY if someone else is driving home.
Siam to Go in Nantucket Ice, 10 Backus Ln. 508-228-7426 This is one of two eateries on the island specializing in Thai cuisine, and our staff pick at Siam to Go is their Fried Tofu Pad Thai, the thin tender rice noodles tossed with egg, bean sprouts, cabbage, carrot, and scallion with crushed peanut and lime. TIP: order this with a sweet and creamy Thai Iced Coffee and their Banana Spring Rolls.
Nantucket Bake Shop: 17.5 Old South Rd. 508-228-2797 For decades, this island bakery has received high praise for their fresh breads (especially their Portuguese Bread & Cheese Bread) and their freshly made donuts (the Boston Cream is sinfully good). But our staff pics are their Apple Turnover with a hazelnut coffee and their Fruit Tart with strawberries, nectarines, grapes, blackberries, and blueberries beautifully arranged over a satiny pastry cream. TIPS: Order your Fruit Tart in advance, as they are made fresh and sell out quickly. And stop by early in the morning for the best choice of donuts.
Thai House: 118 Old South Rd. 508-680-1522 We love the Fresh Rolls at this Thai restaurant, but our favorites here are from their Sushi Menu. They serve more than a dozen rolls, and our top pick is their Spicy Tuna Roll, one of the best and most reasonably priced on the island. TIP: Double the order. After you give each of your friends a taste, you’ll want more!
Crosswinds: at Nantucket Airport, 508-228-6005 Sophie T’s Pizza: 7 Daves St. 508325-6265 This family-friendly favorite makes great pizza, but their subs, soups, salads, stuffed shells & lasagna are terrific, too! Our favorite pizzas here are their White Pizza with house-made pesto, diced tomato, and blended cheese and their Greek Pizza with spinach, red onion, pesto, tomato, black olives, mozzarella & feta. TIP: order a salad with your pizza, Sophie T’s salads are perfectly sized for sharing.
Yummy: 63 Surfside 508-228-2712
Rd.
Their name says it all—ymmy baked goods, ice cream, smoothies (pictured on front cover), clams, burgers, and sandwiches, all on your way to or from Surfside Beach. Our pick here is their Stoking Falafel with housemade hummus, baby arugula, grape
We love the nightly specials at this island eatery—the food and the price! Tuesday is Steak Night when you take home steak dinners for two for $25.90. Thursday nights you can order a half-rack of delicious Crosswinds BBQ Ribs for under $12, and Friday Fish & Chips are just $9.95. TIP: Crosswinds is open even when everyone else is closed: 365 days a year.
Annye’s Whole Foods: 14 Amelia Dr. 508-228-4554 Not enough people think of Annye’s when they want takeout: here you can get globally inspired hot lunches & family style dinners, wraps, sandwiches, gourmet soups, fresh salads, with gluten-free, vegetarian &vegan options. Bring home a Roasted Chicken with seasonal veggies when you’re short on time and dinner is served. TIP: Take home a biodynamic wine from the selection at Annye’s to complete your meal.
Bartlett’s Farm: 33 Bartlett Farm Rd. 508-228-9403 Farm-fresh food to go with two expert chefs in their kitchen... need we say more? Our farm favorites are the Tuna Sandwich paired with their Goat Cheese Spread with sun-dried tomatoes and pesto with a bag of pita chips and a Lemon Bar from the dessert selection. TIP: The farm is a short drive to Ladies Beach or to Cisco Beach for a summer picnic!

Books & Publications On This Day in Nantucket History
by Amy Jenness available at Mitchell’s Book Corner and The Whaling Museum Gift Shop Quirky & fascinating stories that shaped this island Nantucket is much more than beautiful beaches and sailboats. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time. Celebrate an entire year of Nantucket history. ON THIS DAY IN NANTUCKET HISTORY is available for sale at Mitchell’s Book Corner and the Whaling Museum Gift Shop.
