Prior to the boom of the whaling industry, Nantucket was a sheep herding and farming community. The first settlers on the island were small groups of farmers and wool manufacturers who hunted small game and fished, according to the Nantucket Historical Association. Today, our economy migrated far from the initial herding and farming trades but Sustainable Nantucket is cultivating local farmers to bring back agriculture on the island. Sustainable Nantucket is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness, educating others about sustainable agricultural practices, and ad-

Clean Lines and Plein Air This week the Artists Association of Nantucket is celebrating two things Nantucket has plenty of: clean lines and fresh, open air. From June 9 through June 26, AAN is hosting an exhibition called Clean Lines on the Horizon, in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. An opening reception will be held this Friday June 9, from 6 to 8 pm in the gallery. Overlapping this exhibit, AAN’s annual Plein Air Festival will begin this Tuesday, June 13 and continue through June 18. “Intended to complement the Nantucket Preservations Trust’s first national Preservation Symposium, the Clean Lines show was also developed to coincide with Preservation Month, and will give visitors a sense of the history found across the island, whether in the paintings of historic buildings, picturesque lanes, or cobbled ways,” said curator of exhibitions Robert Frazier. “And as an added benefit, the exhibition will highlight paintings from the AAN’s Permanent Collection which focus on iconic historical island scenes.” NPT is fast becoming a nationally recognized authority for its recognition, protection, and preservation of Nantucket’s historic buildings and landscapes. An additional gallery feature during this exhibition will be the display of works completed during the 6th annual Plein Air Nantucket. This special adjunct of the gallery exhibition will showcase works done by artists who have been painting along Nantucket’s shores and all through town, from Washing Pond to Great Point. Upon completion, the new works will be hung daily in the gallery through Saturday, June 24. The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during this exhibition is Caroline Weld, who will discuss her work during our Spotlight Artist Talk on Saturday, June 10 at 10 am in the gallery, 19 Washington Street.

Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition. established 1982

by Robert P. Barsanti He is one of us. He stood at the checkout line at the Stop and Shop with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, a gallon of 2% milk, and a box of Cheerios. The cashier spoke to the woman in the next aisle in something like patois. The women laughed. “Speak goddam English!” he barked. They stared at him. “You are on Nantucket. Speak the language.” Then, the moment slipped downhill. Threats. Anger. Spit. Fingers. He was confronted by other shoppers. He was warned. He was given an explanation. Nevertheless, he persisted. And he persisted out to his pickup truck with threats of shootings and deportations. Then, the Stop and Shop “Patriot” left in a squeal of tires. He is a thinner version of me: middle aged, white, islander t-shirt, and work boots. Yet, here he was unloading on someone else working eight hours on her feet. Angry, insulted, and empowered; he let loose. Sometimes, you need to see yourself from afar. Sometimes you need to see yourself as others see you. Perhaps he did this. Perhaps, he saw himself as a brave crusader confronting the infidels. In the story of our lives, we always see ourselves as beset and misunderstood heroes fighting against overwhelming odds. We all fly the trench in the X-wing fighter, looking to drop a photon torpedo into an exhaust port and destroy the Death Star. When he went over and spoke to his kids, I suspect he told them about how he resisted and stood up for the Islander Way. He blew up the Jamaican Death Star that was threatening us all, he told them. We tell ourselves stories in order to live.

Drinking Pink the Easy Way

Providing Quality Tours Since 1998

by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits While the calendar may not officially read summer just yet, our minds and spirits on Nantucket are in full summer mode as we enter the transitional month of June that transports us to our summer-loving days here on-island. Rosé wine has become all the rage in the past few years: the bigger the bottle, the more exciting life can be! Here are a handful of rosé alternatives that are quick and easy to drink on the go for just a splash of Nantucket’s favorite sip of summer. RUZA ROSÉ IN A CAN 2016 (Lodi, California) RTD. Ready to Drink. This vintage dated rosé wine found in a can is a fresh, modern alternative to the popular Provençal rosés. The grapes that are harvested and used to make Ruza Rosé are “thoughtfully-farmed,” meaning they are grown specifically for rosé wine production. These aren’t just grapes left over from red wine production and not just a blend of red and white grapes together to get the perfect pink color. The grapes are picked early in the harvest season in order to produce a rosé of optimal color, flavor, and acidity. Lots of red fruit on the nose is matched with a dry finish and slight spritz on the palate. Convenience is key for this fun, fashionable and great quality thirst quencher. Ruza is available in a single serving 250 ml can, which is just over 8 ounces or about 1.5 glasses of wine. This is a perfect sized serving for someone who wants one glass of wine and a little splash more. The slight spritz of effervescence—think Pellegrino, not Prosecco—found in this wine will last longer if consumed straight from the can than if it was poured from a bottle into a glass. vocating for more local island food production. Their Farm-to-School program helps to integrate agricultural and nutritional education into the curriculum of Nantucket schools. And they aim to expand agricultural demand while increasing access to local foods by connecting consumers to food with local origins with a Saturday market. This year, Sustainable Nantucket began the third growing season of the Community Farm Institute program, located at Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm. Started in June of 2015, the Community Farm Institute (CFI) is designed to teach sustainable agriculture production and provide plots of land for farmers to grow produce. Through educational workshops and providing the farming equipment, the goal of CFI is to “grow new growers.â€? “The farm does three different things,â€? said Michelle Whelan, Sustainable Nantucket executive director and director of programs. “It’s a working farm that is a model of sustainable agricultural practices, and its also an incubating [teaching] farm‌and increases the amount of local food to our community and a place where we directly teach classes.â€? Farmers interested in the program must first go through an educational program and a series of workshops to teach the style of farming the used by the CFI. The CFI wants to emphasize to new farmers sustainable, humanscale farming, meaning on a scale that makes it possible for the farming to be done by humans without machines or chemicals. Some farmers will even handpick bugs of each plant to avoid the use of pesticides. After completing their workshops and classes, farmers must submit a proposal for their plot of land to be approved by the CFI. If the farmers are accepted, they will be provided a plot to farm and access to the tools and facilities on the farm for small fee. The CFI not only teaches farmers directly affiliated with the program, but all who are interesting in furthering their agricultural knowledge. The workshops and classes are free and open to the public. Just two years old, the program is receiving positive participation. “It’s great,â€? said Whelan. “Right now we have four farmers who have gone continued on page 18

AC Recycling Event Benefits Fairwinds National Grid has scheduled a two-day event for dropping off old, working air conditioning units, Friday, June 9, 12:30 to 4:30 pm, and Saturday, June 10, 9 am to 1 pm, at the Town of Nantucket’s Planning & Land Use Services parking lot at 2 Fairgrounds Road (the Ferry Connector off Old South Road). For each working air conditioner received for recycling, National Grid will donate $25 to Fairwinds, the island’s only nonprofit mental health and substance abuse agency. Additionally, local appliance stores are offering $25 off new Energy Star® rated ACs to customers who recycle their old AC units. According to Matt Chase, Associate Engineer for National Grid, “By holding this event, we are ensuring that these older AC units are off the market and recycled responsibly, which is important because these units are not as energy efficient as the Energy Star® rated units you can buy today.” Brenda Pike, National Grid’s project manager in charge of this effort noted, “National Grid has launched an energy efficiency initiative on Nantucket to reduce electricity demand, particularly in July and August when energy usage is spiking. Recycling those older units can make a significant contribution to that goal.” Chase added, “National Grid is more than an energy company. We’re a part of the community. We are dedicated to giving back to Nantucket, so donating $25 per recycled AC unit an important cause as Fairwinds was a priority for us.” Chase also noted, “We could not have conducted this initiative without the help of the Town of Nantucket for hosting the event in the parking lot of the Town’s Planning and Land Use Services building, as well as the DPW’s assistance in coordinating the appliance recycling.” In the last five years, Nantucket’s increase in the demand for energy has been five times greater than the state of Massachusetts. If no action is taken, this trend is projected to continue, which may accelerate the need for major costly infrastructure investments, such as a third undersea cable. Nantucket ratepayers are still contributing to the cost of the first two cables until 2026. For details on how community members and visitors can become more energy conscious, particularly from 5 to 9 pm in July and August, visit ngrid.com/nantucket. For answers to questions about the energy awareness initiative or about this AC recycling event, contact Kim Horyn, Community Outreach Manager, 508.332.2407 or info@nantucketsavesenergy.com.

from one-eighth to a quarter acre, one getting ready to make the leap [to a bigger plot], and one who is leaping. Learning and contributing to farming and agriculture is especially vital to our island community because all of our food and produce must be shipped in. Food not only travels across the country to get here, but 30 miles across the ocean as well. If something were to happen to crops on the mainland or shipping problems developed, we would be susceptible to food shortages. Nantucket does not have enough farms to support the produce needs of our population. This is why the community farm and backyard gardeners are so essential to PHOTO BY YESHE PALMO our island. We need a system and the knowledge to provide for ourselves if the mainland is faced with an agricultural issue. “Last summer, the boat didn’t run for two days and Stop & Shop ran out of food. We don’t realize how vulnerable we are, said John Kuszpa, Community Farm Institute site manager, educator, and Nantucket Agricultural Commission chair. Kuszpa also operates Lazy Man Gardens at the community farm. “It’s a big illusion that it is perfectly safe and nothing can ever happen. It’s way more vulnerable of a system that we than we think, he added. Not only are food shortages a concern here, but we also are creating a higher impact on our environment by having all of our foods shipped in. The farther from the source foods are shipped, the greater the emissions produced and fossil fuels used to bring them to Nantucket. Commune farms provide local goods to restaurants and our community without those side effects.

“We try to keep the cycle of life nutrients small,” said Kuszpa. “We grow here, use [the produce] here, and fertilize them from here, and are taking out the transportation. We use a lot less petroleum.” In addition to holding educational workshop and classes, Sustainable Nantucket has a farmers and artisans market during the summer and early fall months. The farmers and artisans market started as a platform for local entrepreneurs and growers of all kinds to showcase their goods while enhancing the overall experience of our community. “It puts locals and visitors in touch with the community, people who are making things, the people who live here year round, the farmers who are growing our food,” said Sarah Morneau, owner of s•mac designs. Morneau has been a vendor at the market since its first year in 2007. “I think that it’s really important for people who live here year-round to see as well as the people who are coming to Nantucket because it gives them a little of view of how we work and how we support ourselves on the island,” said Moreau The Sustainable Nantucket Farmers and Artisans Market, which had more than 45,000 visitors last year, includes vendors who are seasonal or yearround residents of Nantucket. The market features a wide range of Nantucket vendors and products, from hand loomed clothing and ceramics to baked goods and fresh produce. “I think working with Sustainable Nantucket has really helped me develop my business because they have been really good about getting word out that the market is happening, getting us [vendors] visibility being in town,” commented Morneau. Held every Saturday until October 14, the Farmers and Artisans Market opens at 9 am and continues to 1 pm in the center of town on Cambridge and North Union streets. The market also has a second location at Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm, 168 Hummock Pond Road, that is open on Wednesdays July 5 to August 30, from 3:30 to 6:30 pm. Sustainable Nantucket offers a taste of what they do in their Farm Fresh Feast, a benefit dinner held in the middle of Walter F. Ballinger Educational Community Farm under the summer stars. This annual gourmet dinner party made with locally sourced ingredients will be held this year on Wednesday, July 26. Event tickets are available at sustainablenantucket.org or by calling 508-228-3399.

around wine not being from a bottle? The can does not affect the taste of the wine in anyway, shape or form. If anything, by making the can your drinking vessel, you cut out the “middle man” and can enjoy your refreshing beverage as soon as you easily open the can. Three cans of Ruza are equal to the same amount of wine that is found in a regular sized 750 ml bottle of wine. Ruza is also sold in a 4-pack box that would give you a quantity of one liter of wine (an amazing value). Best part is your wine will never be corked! CIDERGEIST ‘BUBBLES’ ROSÉ ALE (Cincinatti, OH) The rosé beer trend has begun. Made by Rheingeist Brewery from Cincinatti, a craft beer and cider specialist, this tantalizes your palate with a wave of tart, juicy fruitiness with the Cidergeist ‘Bubbles’ Rosé Ale. The brewery is located in the historic Over-the-Rhine Brewery district in Cincinatti, where the city was originally inhabited by a large number of German immigrants (hence the brewing background). “Bubbles” Rosé Ale is made with apple, peach, and cranberry, which the latter ingredient adds to the lovely pink hue, creating a tart, juicy fruitiness that makes it like no other brew. Bubbles is an ale product (more like a beer) that contains malt, so this is not a gluten-free option. It is drier and lighter than traditional beer and more similar to white (or rosé) wine production with a blend of acidity and bountiful aromatics. Great news is that it is available as year-round, not just a seasonal sensation. It is served in a single-serving can and easily portable just like a 6-pack of beer would be. This rosé ale alternative is a testament that real men do drink pink. WOLFFER NO. 139 DRY ROSÉ CIDER (Long Island, NY) Summer in a Bottle - Part Deux. Wolffer Estate Winery, located in the Hamptons on Long Island, is owned and managed by two siblings who are the children of the original owner, along with their winemaker/partner. This American winery with a classic European character has taken their successful wine and lifestyle brand to create a delicious cider made exclusively from apples grown in New York State. The ‘NO. 139’ name for their cider brand continued on page 21

comes from the number of their address in the Hamptons. This well-crafted, unique hard cider is the real deal, made with real juice and nothing artificial. While the Dry Rosé is clear with a shiny, pale rose color that comes from the addition of red grape skin contact, it has hints of honeysuckle and fine yeast aromas with a hint of strawberries. This elegant, premium sparkling dry rosé cider is sold as individual 355ml bottles. Three bottles of this refreshing quaff amounts to just over 1 liter of juice, where a four-pack is just under 1.5L. A case would be 6-4 packs, making it 24 bottles, offering much more than a case of beer in the same quantities. Take note that this rosé alternative is a gluten-free option. NANTUCKET VINEYARD CRANBERRY PINOT GRIS (American) Drink local, if you can get it. The popularity of Nantucket Vineyard’s Cranberry Pinot Gris drives this beauty out-of-stock more often than any of us would like. From corporate jetsetters and yacht owners to weekend bachelorette party-goers and lots of Nantucket lovers in between, this delicious cranberry wine concoction is the perfect alternative to the person who says they don’t like rosé wine. The grapes for this wine come from the West Coast and are brought to Nantucket in order to blend with our local cranberries. The resulting product is fun, festive, and a local taste of home. No need for a corkscrew as this 750 ml bottle is topped with a crown-cap, just like you would find on an old-style Coca-Cola bottle. The newest bottling was just released, so be sure to stock your cooler now and stash some away for enjoyment all summer long. No matter what your rosé preference is for your summer drinking pleasure, cheers to these easy-drinking rosé alternatives that are sure to please your palate, even if it comes from a can.

Featured Restaurant: TOPPER’s at the Wauwinet Begin with Whimsy, End with Delight Our evening at TOPPERS began with whimsy and ended with delight. It was chilly and rainy, so we asked to be seated in their classically elegant dining room. With exquisite decor and the quiet hush of formality, it’s a lovely spot for special occasions. The couple at the table next to ours was celebrating their anniversary: they’d become engaged at TOPPER’S sixteen years earlier. But it’s this restaurant’s more casual patio venue that has the sensational view and the fresh ocean breezes. Take your Gin Cured Ocean Trout pick: at TOPPER’S no matter where you sit, you’re going to enjoy a meal for the memory book. Dinner in the dining room is prix fixe: $85 for appetizer, entree, and dessert (plus a surprise or two)—less than what you’d pay at some other highend Nantucket restaurants, and they don’t all have the superb view and service. If everyone at the table is of the same mindset and similar palate, you can order the six-course Chef's Tasting Menu or the six course Vegetarian Tasting Menu, which would be our choice after seeing what talented Executive Chef Kyle Zachary can do with fresh vegetables! Both of these tasting menus can be ordered with savvy pairings by expert sommelier Hieu Tran, who supplied the suggested pairings for this article. Chef Zachary’s impressively detailed dishes will turn even jaded diners into true believers: we’ve savored some of his culinary combinations that

seem unlikely yet are remarkably good! He has a knack for creating dishes that give equal emphasis to everything, with each element offering its full flavor the whole. to Presentation is gorgeous—art on a plate—we imagine kitchen underlings using tweezers to carefully position baby chard, pea pods, and slices of Pumpkin Pond Farm Asparagus Veloute radish, the plates are that beautifully arranged. Our meal began with a nest filled with porcelain eggs opened to reveal delicate custards that radiated mellow, sweet garlic. While we were still savoring the luscious amuse bouche, a lightship basket filled with an assortment of freshly baked breads arrived: focaccia, garlic-rosemary-roasted tomato loaf, salt-topped rolls, and the restaurant’s signature brown bread, utterly delicious in its rustic simplicity. Served with the breads this season are two orbs of butter—one sweet topped with a sprinkling of salt and the other smoked with a grinding of pepper, both cool enough to hold their perfect oval shapes yet warm enough to slice into without sending them skidding across the table. In a bit of tableside flair, the Pumpkin Pond Farm Asparagus Veloute is poured over a sculpture of sweet butter poached king crab, fresh ramps, peppery nasturtium leaves, and a single golden egg yolk confit that adds a delightful richness to the dish. It was lighter than we expect for a veloute, but full flavored—an elixir of spring. (Suggested Pairing: Steininger Gruner Veltliner Grand Cru 2014) Our reaction to the other warm appetizer we enjoyed, Carnaroli Risotto "Fruits de Mer," can be summed up in one word: WOW. Every bite of this chef’s favorite was full of bracing maritime flavor; no surprise that he called it “sea on a plate.” Each ingredient, from squid to crab, kept its integrity and brought its own special flavor to the dish. Depending on where you dip in your fork, every mouthful has a slightly different flavor. (Suggested Pairing: Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Sechet 2014) Gin Cured Ocean Trout is another unexpected treat. the trout is presented simply, surrounded by small pickled onions, smoked roe, mustard seed, tiny cubes of crunchy cucumber, and crisp rounds of radish, and a quenelle of pumpernickel mousse. (Suggested Pairing: Thienot Rose Champagne NV) Our favorite appetizer of the evening was the Terrine of Hudson Valley Foie Rohan Duck Gras. This beautifully curated dish looks like an elaborate dessert. The irresistibly smooth foie is topped with a translucent ruby red hibiscus gelée. Fresh sweet red and white strawberries are scattered around the plate, with green almonds, dots of strawberry puree, and crunchy cubes of kohlrabi. (Suggested Pairing: Chene Bleu Rose 2016) If you love lobster, you’ll adore Chef Zachary’s Seaweed Butter Poached Lobster (cover photo) , delicate tail and claws nestled in a bed of spring vegetables: sweet pea pods, plump English peas, and an assortment of alliums. Lobster and crab mousse is piped into two long tubes of housemade rigatoni and tucked in with the lobster meat. Dollops of burnt onion sabayon finish this pairing of land and sea. (Suggested Pairing: Joseph Drouhin ChassagneMontrachet Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche 2013) We also loved this chef’s treatment of North Atlantic Halibut in another spectacular dish of land and sea. The halibut, perfectly seasoned and cooked through but moist and flaky with an appealNorth Atlantic Halibut ing top crust, is served opposite a delectable arrangement of braised baby artichokes, fava beans, sorrel, carrot, and baby onions. The fish and the vegetables are joined by a bright and luscious meyer lemon sauce. (Suggested Pairing: Pierre Matrot Meursault Perrieres 2010) Also delicious, the Provitello Farms Veal Sirloin comes as a duet of veal: rosy slices of sirloin and cubes of the tender braised cheeks. Baby carrots roasted with hazelnuts on top and roasted sunchokes add sweetness and

depth. If there’s one complaint it’s that we longed for more of the smoked date medjool puree that was superb with the veal. (Suggested Pairing: Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio 2000) If it’s still on the menu when you dine at TOPPER’S, order the Rohan Duck. Provitello Farms Veal Sirloin This special breed is very flavorful and Chef Zachary’s preparation includes both thick slices of medium-rare breast and a portion of soft, intensely flavored confit wrapped in Swiss chard. The breast meat topped with delicious crackly-crisp skin is set on a study in red: Bull’s Blood and red beets, pearl barley stained by beet juice, and rhubarb. (Suggested Pairing: Comte Lafon Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1999) How can you not fall in love with a restaurant that serves a sweet treat called pre-dessert before dessert? Pots de S’mores, dark chocolate pot de creme on thin graham crust kissed on top by dollops of marshmallow, arrived in miniature bowls with spoons to match. Thus prepared to switch from savory to sweet, we continued with Chocolate and Raspberry Timbale, a flourless chocolate cake with a secret heart of raspberry lusciousness. Espresso ice cream on top highlights the coffee notes in the chocolate. (Suggested Pairing: Alvear Montilla Solera 1927) The Rhubarb Flan is refined, a taste of spring delights dressed up with fennel ice cream and candied fennel along with pickled rhubarb. (Suggested Pairing: Domaine de Baumard Quartes de Chaume 2007) And we particularly liked the Lime in the Coconut, a refreshingly tart Key Lime Mousse set on a coconut-almond financier and served with coconut-lime sorbet. (Suggested Pairing: Lemoncello Sogno di Sorrento) If you’d rather continue the savory adventure, then end your meal at TOPPER’S with their Selection of Fine Cheeses. This tasting includes a trio (soft, semi-hard, and blue) of cheeses curated by Formaggio Kitchen: Challerhocker from Switzerland, a French Langres, and Bluebird from Martha’s Vineyard. Toast points of fruit and nut bread are supplied along with local honeycomb, grapes, candied nuts, and chutney are additions. The Patriot from page 5

We have our own stories and our own truths. Our Nantucket, in the current moment, has lines for $5 cups of coffee, poor families sharing one room while rich families share twenty, and ICE scaring the workers. Money turns the pages; I made this much renting out a bedroom on AirBnB, I had to pay this much to staff my t-shirt store, and I had to pay twenty bucks for a burger. These seem to be the stories of the new Nantucket. I have my own stories of Nantucket; we are different from those on the mainland. I would like to think, and can almost believe, that Nantucketers are cut from a different cloth than everyone who lives on the other side of the water. In my own mythology, Nantucketers are hard working, insular, and protective; “no seats reserved for the mighty.” If I were to tell my story of the island, I would tell the story of the Coopers. Thirty-one-year-old Arthur Cooper, his wife Mary, and their children came to the island in 1822 after escaping slavery in Virginia. They moved into a small house on Angola Street, in the shadow of the windmill and very much in New Guinea. Although Nantucket has abolished slavery, it hadn’t done the same for racism or segregation. Poor people lived in one part of time, rich people lived in another, and work remained hard everywhere. 1822 was at the beginning of another boom time in whaling, as the great spinning herds of sperm whales were being hunted, killed, and boiled down in the Pacific. Herman Melville still waddled about in knickers, New Bedford had just begun to send ships out, and the Inquirer had begun publishing. Arthur Cooper and his wife were, to a segment of the mainland population, not so much as free people, as they were run-away dogs or, as the newspaper commented “Two legged cattle.” Three slave catchers came from Boston in order to bring the Coopers back to Virginia. Word quickly spread, an alarm was called, and a large crowd of African-Americans met the “gentlemanly looking” off-islanders on Angola Street. Threats and weapons ap-

peared. As did the Quakers. George Washington, an African American unaware of the irony of his name, awakened Macy, Coffin, Mitchell, Folger, and Gardner. They appeared on Angola Street in the early morning. Several of them “labored” with the slave catchers out front, while Gardner whisked the Coopers out the back door. Then, the ship owners hosted the Coopers in one house and then another, until the three off-islanders got back on a boat and returned to America. Arthur and Mary Cooper lived, and died, on-island. Eliza King, their daughter died in 1902 and their house was sold and moved to Jetties Beach. Their land became a garden, then a farm, and is now one of those million dollar summer houses with hydrangea, landscapers, and an au pair. I would like to think of myself as Oliver Gardner. I want to be helping the family down the back stairs and into a cart before bringing them to my house for safety. Failing that, I could also be Gilbert Coffin, arguing and laboring by the front door while the escape was being effected out the back. In a more sober moment, I could also be someone angry and upset in the front yard, swearing out great vengeance and furious anger upon the pompous off-islanders in their cockade hats and badges. The truth is that I would, more likely, be the Coopers. Years have taught me not to see myself as some grand rich hero, but rather as some small scared man looking to survive; more likely to be Arthur Cooper than Sylvanus Macy. Terrified, frozen, and hopeless; looking on for the well wishes of the well-to-do and the courage of the common for my salvation. But I wouldn’t be the slave catcher Griffiths. As a nation, and as an island, we are having a moment in the early morning on Angola Street. More than the stories we imagine ourselves in, we are what we do when the moment comes. When the knock comes to the door, language drops away like clothing and leaves us naked to the world. Did we stand? Did we help? Did we hurt? Did we hide? Or did we try to hide in authority? Today, the moment came for the Stop and Shop “Patriot.” Tomorrow, it will come for you.
