There’s No Place Like the NHA

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) has “lowered its whaleboats” at the Whaling Museum and is welcoming the public back into this world-class museum... with a little twist. Most who have visited this iconic island museum will agree that there’s no place like it. To add a bit of fun to pandemic restrictions (while still implementing all to keep guests and staff safe), the NHA has installed a yellow cobblestone road inspired by The Wizard of Oz (can you hear the tune in your mind?) as a visual guide to lead visitors safely through the various rooms and exhibits with appropriate distancing, including their outdoor roof deck. “We wanted something very recognizable, fun, and light-hearted as opposed to something that maybe would come across as restrictive and boring if we just had a stanchioned path,” explained Ashley Santos of the NHA. “We also really liked the play on cobblestones to give it its own Nantucket feel..I have already heard numerous families in the past couple of days skipping and singing as they head off towards the timeline...it’s so great to see!” New Whaling Museum exhibitions include a magical collection of curiosities in Neptune’s Grotto, a new area devoted to the dramatic and tragic tale of the Essex, and a brand new and engaging Discovery Center designed for kids with take-home projects to help teach history in a fun way. “Underscoring all the above is the firm belief that cultural institutions like the NHA can be places of healing during a time of crisis,” states James Russell, Gosnell Executive Director. “We are fortunate to have large open indoor spaces, and the concept of “seeing-not-touching” is widely understood when visiting a museum. Providing a sanctuary is important this year, particularly as other indoor entertainment options are limited. We choose the Yellow Brick Road metaphor for a reason—this year we want to do our part to strengthen the heart, mind, and

Celebrating 75 with an“At Home” Gala

Nantucket has been a oasis for artists of all kinds for nearly 100 years. The island’s art colony bloomed throughout the 1920s, grew in the 1930s, and faced a crisis in 1943 when the only exhibition gallery closed. Then, the transformation of an abandoned warehouse on Straight Wharf into a new gallery space by the summer of 1945 changed everything. That year, a handful of artists and patrons at the center of the scene formed the Artists Association, and their dynamic mission of promoting island artists, providing art education, and collecting Nantucket’s art history insured the future of art & art education on Nantucket. Now celebrating their 75th year, the Artists Association of Nantucket is facing a new set of challenges. With many much-loved live events making the move online, these virtual versions allow for a bigger audience, easier access, and more effective funding for this beloved island institution. On Saturday, July 18, the Artist Association of Nantucket will honor Nantucket artist Robert Frazier at this year’s special At Home Dinner & Auction. The auction is an at-home event this year, with the purchase of tickets and tables benefitting the AAN in celebration of their anniversary and their mission. By age 12, Robert “Bobby” Frazier was taught to draw and paint by his mother, artist Barbara Brown Frazier. In his early years, Frazier worked for the AAN. In 1974, he joined as a member artist, and he went on to become president of the Association for 5 years until 2004. Frazier, who in addition being a fine artist is also a published author, is currently AAN’s Art Director, managing the AAN Permanent Collection and overseeing the hanging of present-day exhibitions at the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street and at AAN events. “AAN remains grateful to our numerous supporters, and we will continue to find ways for the community to view new works of art while also supporting our local artist members during these very different times,” says Frazier. The At Home Dinner & Auction includes an online Silent Auction component at https://www.32auctions.com/GalaSilent20 – bidding ends at 8pm on July 21. For more details on how to participate and watch the event and to purchase a ticket or table to support this valuable island organization, visit nantucketarts.org

ISLAND MEMORIES: NANTUCKET IN 1970

I Got Sand in My Shoes reminiscing with Jim Perelman One of our most beloved town officials is Nantucket County Sheriff Jim Perelman. Known for combining kindness with professionalism, he won his last election by a landslide with more than 88% of the vote. He is very much a part of our island community and has an Open Door Policy at his office on Broad Street. We spoke with him recently about what he remembers about Nantucket in 1970... Born and raised in Vermont, Jim first visited Nantucket in the 1950s, when he vacationed here with his grandparents. One of his first fond memories of the island was renting a bicycle here in 1958. He came every year with his grandparents, enjoying a few idyllic weeks vacationing. In 1962, when they purchased a home on Lily Street, Jim starting spending the entire summer on-island, and in 1965, he landed his first “kitchen job,” working for the Killen’s at Jetties Beach. In the spring of 1970, Jim Perelman moved full time to the island. He smiled when he said “I came back for what I thought would be just one more summer,” –half a century later, he still calls Nantucket home. “What I remember from 1970 is was how quiet it was

after Labor Day…I had always left [before that year] to go back to school… it was quieter in September of 1970 than February is now... “That summer of 1970, I was working for Henry Fee… he had taken over the Jetties concession, and he asked me to stay a few more months when he opened a shop on Main Street… and I’m still here... I got sand in my shoes... “We would work all day at the concession… the beach closed at 5 pm. Afterwards a gang of us would usually go to a south shore beach and swim or surf... “There weren’t a lot of things to do. There was no cable TV, after Columbus Day there were no movies... nearly all the businesses were in the core district...I wasn’t old enough in 1970 to go to the Bosun’s Locker, and it closed that fall...Mostly I just worked as much as I could..everyone always had more than one job... I worked at Henry’s, and when I wasn’t at Henry’s I was painting houses. “I remember summer band concerts at the Gazebo...I do remember a bit of friction with hippies in 1970. I heard that someone set fire to the Old Mill, so after that some local people set up a neighborhood watch...” Perelman stayed on Nantucket, except for a few trips Off to fulfill his National Guard commitments–”the boat ride to Woods Hole back then took about 3 hours.” His many jobs over the years included baking and then cooking at the Jared Coffin House, cooking at the Mad Hatter, and baking at The Downyflake. In 1978, he bought the Boarding House with his wife. “We had decided we were working too hard and could do better...” In the early 2000, Perelman took a job as a court officer, and that was the beginning of his new career. We asked Jim what he’d bring back to Nantucket if he could from 1970… “I’d like to see less congestion. The gridlock doesn’t last long, but it’s frustrating...Progress happened, and that’s fine…Nantucket’s been very good to me… I love it here… you can’t bring the 1970s back, but a slower pace would be nice.” This season is the 50th year for Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket. We’ve seen many changes on the island during the last half-century, and over the years we have made many changes to our publication. As part of our anniversary celebration, we are publishing memories of our island in 1970 that readers have shared with us. If you have a reminiscence of Nantucket in 1970 to share, please email it to us at yi@nantucket.net or give us a call at 508-228-9165.

Privilege of Surf

Page 7

by Robert P. Barsanti The storm missed. It formed off the coast of North Carolina and, instead of following the time honored path of the Gulfstream, it hooked left over New Jersey and New York, leaving us with fog, a stiff breeze, and some rolling surf. Without the turnover days of the past, filled with mowing, lobster shells, and empty wine bottles, I have found myself at the beach. Early in July, the water remains chilly enough to raise the foggy spirits and send them cartwheeling over the island, but warm enough for floating. With the passing storm and its echoing surf, nobody was floating for long. Storm surf dominates. Its spray fills the air, the boiling white illuminates the beach, and the crashing waves command. With everything that fills the air today, from marching to bounties to infection, I enjoy the privilege of surf. I enjoy it so much that I slept sounder on the sand than I have for months. I wasn’t alone. The island may be less than half full these days, but the surf beaches are close to July normal. The Jeeps, the Land Rovers, and the retro Broncos have been putting two wheels in the beach grass along the south shore. Out on the beach, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Greenwich Country Day spread in semicircular audiences to the rolling natural performance. “Spenser had come up from Houston. He was supposed to leave a week ago, but, y’know…” Yes, I know. Next to me, a semi-circle of women in bikinis enjoyed the sun. They had three consorts; one with gray hair, one with dark hair, and one in a tent with a diaper and a jumper. They had brought the equipment; coolers, chairs, tent, books, and kadima. Dad picked up one paddle and a daughter picked up the other; they volleyed ten, twelve, twenty times in rhythm. Then, two of her sisters joined in. The husband was a good sport for a few minutes, embarrassing and abasing himself in front of Dad before returning to Jill Lepore’s latest. Dad, however, had become the Man in Full. He would, periodically, lob the ball high in the air, and wait for one bikini or another to keep the ball in the air. He had done this before. Many times. He was silent, in that way Dads are when they don’t want to jinx it. Me too. You have to keep the ball in the air. I had perspective. The umbrellas, the chairs, the tent, the Land Rover, the house on Meadowview Drive and the retirement had all been steps that led him to this one moment on the beach. He and his daughters, keeping the ball in the air. You have to enjoy the privilege of surf. One more moment, when we are all together and healthy and the steaks are marinating back home in pineapple, Worcestershire, and soy. Tik tok tik tok tik. Privilege isn’t just wealth. Money alone did not bring them to this moment, although it helped. It not only bought the house and the accessories, it bought the time for everyone to come back to the beach. It bought the careers that could be put on hold or Zoomed on the Wifi from the guest bedroom. And it bought the good health that everyone, from diaper to Dad, enjoyed. And it isn’t only race, although it also helped. As a white man, he was went to college and enjoyed fraternity shenanigans without being shot or arrested. He setcontinued on page 24

A Multitude of Milkweed by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation

Let’s talk about milkweed. When you hear the word “milkweed” you probably think about monarch butterflies. Maybe you’ve even spent some time looking for monarch caterpillars on plants. What you might not realize is that Nantucket boasts six species of milkweed with at least four easily seen around the island. These plants are important to more than just monarchs. They play an important role to many other creatures in the environment. Milkweeds are perennial plants native to the U.S., parts of Canada, Mexico and Central America. Named for the milky, white sap that runs through their stems and leaves, they can be found in nearly every habitat from marshes to meadows and even deserts. They vary tremendously in appearance; from broad to narrow leaves, short to tall plants, and they come in a variety of flower colors. Right now on Nantucket, you may notice a few spots of blunt-leaved (or clasping) milkweed (Asclepias amplexicaulis) in bloom. It has leaves which clasp the stem and appear really ruffled and waxy. It requires sandy fields and open woodland habitat. There are some near my house and I love seeing both the dark green vegetation and the light pink/purple flowers. The smell is nice and not too sweet. One botanist friend of mine described it as “Spicy and exotic.” Check out areas near Altar Rock for potential sightings. continued on page 13

spirit of the community. The raison d’etre for the NHA is that it is an ever-evolving synthesis of Nantucketover-time, through its collections and historic properties. As this crisis tests our very being, we can look to how the island’s forebears stood up to similar economic and health challenges.” New physical enhancements make a touch-free experience while visiting, including scheduled and timed visits that can be booked online; extended museum hours at the beginning and end of the day; an 8am–9am reserved time for seniors; and a self-guided audio tour available using personal devices. “The NHA is the steward of important Nantucket collections, many of which were donated over its 126year history by members of the community, and we are committed to providing access as soon as we are permitted to safely do so,” states Kelly Williams, NHA President. Management has enthusiastically extended the wintertime policy of free admission for the island community. Staff is implementing robust sanitizing measures to safeguard the public and make the indoor experience both exceptional and safe for all ages. And the NHA has contracted with a Boston-based firm that specializes in the field of pathogen remediation. Their team of experts conducts frequent sanitizing regimen throughout the complex, tailored to the needs of the museum and informed by similar work in Boston-area schools, hotels, and hospitals. Other safety upgrades include sanitation stations throughout the museum;

HVAC system MERV13 filters; and increases in the flow of fresh air into the building. Nantucket by Design, the NHA’s premiere summer fundraiser that celebrates the island’s unique influence on American Design is going virtual for 2020, and that makes it accessible to a global audience. This year’s phenomenon, held July 30 through August 1, brings together the world’s top talent in interior design, with presentations and tours. Participants can enjoy virtual private dinners, a Night at the Museum virtual dance party, and The Nantucket Summer Antiques Show all through live-streaming platforms. Other pandemic pivots made by the NHA for 2020 include member-only hours; reserved entry times; online learning and lectures; decorative arts classes usually taught in-person at the 1800 House that are now being taught live online; and an expansion of their Museum Shop’s online offerings with curbside pickup. They also have new special offerings for NHA members that include weekly member mornings for small groups, NHA guest speakers for your own Zoom cocktail party, discounted rates for renting the Whaling Museum roof deck for small group dinners, and more. The NHA continues to provide remote research services, and when allowed, will offer again both inperson service to researchers and intimate member mornings that prove to be so popular. Throughout this crisis, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the peace and tranquility found at many of the historic properties, such as the beautiful gardens of Hadwen House and Greater Light, or the open spaces by the Old Mill and Oldest House. Public outdoor programs, will be planned once permitting allows.

Multitude of Milkweed from page 9

Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is the only milkweed in New England that is primarily found in swamps and wet areas. On Nantucket, they are frequent in the coastal pond shores. It can typically grow 3-4 feet tall with small, fragrant flowers pink to mauve in color. The leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, with the ends tapering to a sharp point. A favorite of mine is the orange or butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa). Rare in sandplain grasslands, this species has been planted in several spots around the island as a popular garden plant. Come check some out at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation office at 110 Eel Point Road. Its bright orange flowers make it a showstopper for people and insects alike. It has much narrower leaves than other milkweed species and also has the distinction of having alternately arranges leaves as opposed to opposite leaves which most milkweeds have. It blooms mid- to late summer. Although it is relatively widespread in Massachusetts, like many milkweed species, it is rare and, thus, protected in most states. Purple milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) is the only milkweed on Nantucket listed as Endangered by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage Endangered program. Unlike other milkweeds, this species does not “run,” or spread by rhizomes. It resembles common milkweed, but its flowers are more of a deep purple. The smooth seed pod of purple milkweed can also be used to distinguish it from the warty fruit of common milkweed. Traditionally found in heathland clearings, they should be abundant on island. Their populations have been declining, however, and they are now extremely rare throughout the historic range. Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the species most people think about as monarch food and is probably our most recognizable. It is found in fields and roadsides in all New England states. On Nantucket, it can be found in many similar habitats, along the bike paths, walking trails and roadsides. The flowers are highly fragrant and vary from white (rarely) through pinkish and purplish. These blossoms attract a frenzy of insect activity in mid-summer; and its distinctive seed pods release a hundred or more seeds flying on silky parachutes in late summer and early fall. Native Americans used the outer bark of the stem to make cord, thread, and bowstrings. All of these milkweeds serve as shelter, nesting habitat, and as a food source for a multitude of animal species. Animals that feed directly on milkweed, such as monarch caterpillars, are pretty unique. The white sap these plants produce contain toxic compounds that should kill monarch caterpillars if eaten, but instead, the caterpillars have evolved ways to withstand the toxins and store them internally to protect themselves from being eaten. Just as monarchs make use of milkweeds and their toxins, humans have utilized these plants for centuries – as food, medicine, pillow stuffing, and even thread. For as long as milkweed plants have been around, they have been crucial to the survival of a variety of animals, including hundreds of insect species that use the plant for food or shelter. Their flowers are visited by many species of native bees, wasps, and other nectar-seeking insects. Their leaves and roots are food for numerous beetles, caterpillars and true bugs. Insects feeding on plants serve as food for predators, which promotes ecosystem stability and species diversity. Insects in these milkweed communities also serve as a critical food source for a number of birds. Insects are a critical part of every food web but due to habitat loss and a lack of nectar or other food sources, many species are in decline. Pollinators, especially native bees, have lost food and shelter across the U.S. and have declined at an alarming rate. Planting native milkweed can help to establish an entire food web, not only supporting monarch butterflies, but also contributing to the survival of countless other insects and birds. Remember, do not pick or dig up our wildflowers. Take nothing but pictures. If you would like to grow milkweed as a nectar source for pollinators or to support the monarchs and other insects, check out MonarchWatch.org. They provide detailed information on purchasing and rearing milkweed plants based on your ecoregion.

Susan has been a longtime visitor of the island–like so many. she found Nantucket to be her “happy place.” She carried her own “coastal collection,” that was showcased in galleries and stores across America and featured her photographs on bookmarks, in calendars, and on notecards. In 2016, the she envisioned the idea of ACK4170 and the now popular logo featured on many of her products. What began as an Instagram page of her own photography evolved into an online product line, until Fairgrieve decided to take a “complete leap of faith” and began putting together a brick and mortar concept. “I knew I could rock a store,” says Fairgrieve with a laugh, and she certainly has! The shop, now in its third season, offers a place for visitors to find gifts that are not only reminiscent of their time on Nantucket, but are crafted by local artists and small businesses in addition to Fairgrieve’s own work. Fairgrieve wears many hats: owner, entrepreneur, graphic designer, and photographer, and she puts an incredible amount of love and thoughtfulness into every item into her shop, right down to the packaging. For instance, the lightly fragrant Goat Milk soap is designed to look like the sea and sand and features one of Fairgrieve’s photos on the packaging. This is only one of the many gifts and keepsakes you will want to take home. The shop is filled with gifts, home decor, apparel, and accessories for travelers of any age. Popular items such as the Nantucket tote, available in a variety of continued on page 20

If you’re looking for something smaller, check out the clutch bags, featuring the ACK4170 logo or phrases like “fog happens,” a fun way to celebrate the quirks of Nantucket. If you find yourself in need of dinner or party decor, look no further than the etched ACK4170 wine glasses, pint glasses, and ice bucket. They will go perfectly with oyster inspired napkin rings, nautical napkins, or a Whale Platter. Hand-painted oyster shells featuring bright blue hydrangeas will catch your eye as you decide which items you cannot leave the store without. And if you are attending a party or looking for the perfect hostess gift, the smallbatch goat milk soaps and homemade candles with names like “Cisco,” or “Nantucket Hydrangea,” make for wonderful addition to any home. While the store is typically closed during the off-season, the online store is available year-round, and there you can find other items such as Daffy Weekend totes featuring a bright yellow border and holiday candles to brighten the winter months. Your new favorite jewelry pieces can be found towards the back of the store, in a display dedicated to gorgeous pieces like the Nantucket Basket woven bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Nantucket basketmaking is a tradition on the island, and weaver Ashlie Emery has created a collection that is right at home among the Nantucket inspired gifts of the shop. especially popular this year, as have the Woven White and Grey Freshwater pearl earrings. Each set comes with a white and grey pearls, the perfect match for any outfit and any occasion. You will also find a large section of paintings and photography in the store. Fairgrieve is a huge supporter of small makers, and she sells work by a handful of curated artists in her store. Painter Charlene McLaughlin captures Steps Beach in one of her oil paintings while Watercolorist Jen Strandberg captures the iconic Nantucket Lighthouses in hers. Leigh Olson, a mixed media artist, also shares her work, which showcases a variety of Nantucket scenes. All of the paintings can be purchased in-store or online in a variety of sizes and at incredibly affordable prices that makes it easy to bring home original artwork from Nantucket. One of our favorite sections of ACK4170 is the section dedicated to Fairgrieve’s photography. You can wander out to a small outdoor gallery area with seating and view some of her larger canvas prints. There is also a section filled with bookmarks and notecards with picture perfect photos taken by Susan, featuring Nantucket favorites like Sankaty Head Lighthouse, hydrangeas, the ocean, and so many more. Fairgrieve’s photography skills earned her First Place title in the 2019 Nantucket Photo Contest, and a canvas print of that image is available at her shop. She skillfully captures Nantucket year-round, capturing the beauty of the island in all weather and all seasons. ACK4170 is a must stop shop for anyone looking to bring home a little piece of Nantucket. Fairgrieve is dedicated to crafting the perfect shopping experience, offering high quality customer service and ensuring that you are finding art, decor, apparel, or jewelry that will remind you of your time spent on Nantucket. ACK 4170 can be found where Old North Wharf meets Easy Street and is currently open from 10am-6pm. You can also shop online at and have your favorite items delivered the care, right to your doorstep! Be sure to check out her Instagram @ack4170 to keep up with new products and stunning photos of Nantucket.

Featured Restaurant: Ship’s Inn

Out from the Inn by C. Oscar Olson

Dining out is different this summer season. On Nantucket, the town, restaurant owners, and their neighbors have gone above and beyond to accommodate outdoor dining in spaces that in the past would be impossible. Still impossible for some, island restaurants with no outdoor spaces are working creatively to distance indoor tables and to offer meals to go. As people who love to go out to eat, we see all this as the opportunity to enjoy culinary delights from our favorite restaurants at our favorite island places. After dining out on fantastic fare prepared by The Ships Inn that we brought to one of our favorite downtown parks, we can confidently say that we had a spectacular dining experience. When you dine in at the Ships Inn on Fair Street, you are dining a historic building that was once the home of one of the world’s most famous whaling captains: Obed Starbuck, a man credited with one of the most successful voyages in whaling history. After his 14month journey, Starbuck brought home more than 2,200 barrels of whale oil, a treasure worth well over 1.2 million dollars today. The prize was divided between the ship’s owner, the crew, and Obed, giving him the opportunity to build his house on Fair Charcuterie Street and retire from whaling to farm the island and become a well respected member of the community. In 1913, after Starbuck’s 50-year stay in the house, Ships Inn opened its doors to the public, beginning a long tradition of superior accommodations and cuisine. This year marks another milestone in Ships Inn history. Practicing a pandemic pivot, the much-loved establishment is offering takeout for the very first time. There are two distinct menus for ordering out and for dining in, and Chef/Owner Mark Gottwald took great care in crafting each one. Knowing the beautiful and accessible gardens at the Atheneum are open til

sunset, we picked up our food and headed straight there. Our blanket was laid, our seats were taken on the green grass, and we got started on what we’d been waiting for all day. The Lobster Bisque was like liquid satin, with the deep toasted taste of brown butter and big Lobster Bisque chunks of tender lobster. We used the fresh sliced baguette to soak up every drop of deliciousness. We love the endless options of color, flavor, and texture that Charcuterie can bring to the table, and Ship’s Inn has the best on island. Radiant apricot jam with the creamy aged brie, or the smoky, spicy tang of goat cheese and savory, tender Genoa salami, brasaola, and soppresatta, grainy mustard, cornichons, and more make this the ideal starter to any entree. And it’s perfect for an alfresco feast. Though not normally part of the takeout menu, we just couldn’t pass on the briny seaspray of the House Cured Salmon, one of the many tempting starters offered on the Ships Inn Indoor Dining Menu. It pairs perfectly with the cool crunch of delicately dressed micro greens. Its subtle smokiness doesn’t overwhelm, and the two components come together on a well-buttered round of house baked bread. Our favorite first of the night came as a surprise to one of us: the Beet Salad (cover photo) was so good that our one non-beet lover went in for a second bite, and then a third. Beets and goat cheese House Cured Salmon both share an earthy edge, but they bal-

ance out with their unique sourness and sweetness. Candied walnuts bring a buttery crunch, and bacon just makes everything better. The best part about the Grilled Marinated Skirt Steak was the amazingly aromatic Bordelaise; a rich sauce of red wine, stock, shallots, and butter. It brought life to every bite, and the seasoned frites somehow kept their crisp. On the side was served a red, ripe, and juicy broiled tomato topped with crumbles of feta and a fine dice of seasoned eggplant, adding an acidic dimension to this classic dish. Many of the menu options are farm-totable or, more specifically, ocean-to-table. The seafood is often caught by local fisherman, restaurant staff, and even Chef Mark Grilled Marinated Skirt Steak Gottwald himself. He brought in a beautiful big eye tuna the day before we dined, and we were lucky enough to have a taste in his Grilled Tuna Steak. Truly a steak lover’s entree, the tuna was meaty, clean, and fabulously fork-tender. A pour of the red pepper and tomato coulis adds a dash a fresh vegetal vibrancy, and the lobster risotto cake alongside was absolutely packed with seafood. For a new take on the much loved Italian staple, try the Lamb Lasagna (cover photo). There’s a great balance between the layers of savory lamb, marinated eggplant, spinach, and goat cheese, and the flavors of each stand out in every bite. Slightly bitter spinach holds its own against the creaminess of the cheese, and a thick, rich red tomato sauce is served alongside provides a touch of sweet acidity. There was no deliberation necessary to determine the star entree of the evening. It was the last dish we dove in to, and after a short drive to the Atheneum, unpacking and getting situated, and eating through all the delicious options it was still piping hot. We’ll be thinking about Chef Gottwald’s Shrimp Gumbo for the rest of the summer and, more than likely, we will be back for seconds. It’s packed with unbelievably tender shrimp that marry so well with the Shrimp Gumbo

flavors of andouille sausage, okra, and bell pepper. There is a slow sizzle of heat in every bite and the mild yellow corn cakes are much better than a spoon. Get it while it lasts! Beer and wine by the bottle from the Ships Inn selection can be added to your takeout meal. Take your dinner to the beach with a bottle of dessert wine to make the sunset a little bit sweeter. When you’re placing your order Dory Boat Cake and Cookies or sitting down to eat at Ship’s Inn, make sure you save room for dessert. These treats aren’t a bonus to your meal, they’re a part of it. The Dory Boat Cake is one that everybody will love: five delicate layers of vanilla sponge cake mingle with an impeccable chocolate fudge icing, and the cherry on top is the luxurious pour of creme anglaise. The cake soaks in all the goodness. Also on the menu is an assortment of oven fresh, soft baked Cookies. Classic chocolate chip, decadent chocolate-chocolate chip, and our favorite, oatmeal cranberry. Next time we’re bringing a pint of ice cream. Takeout at Ship’s Inn is a wonderful new way to try some of the best cuisine on Nantucket. They make it easy: just call or go online at ShipsInnNantucket.com between 12 noon and 5:30 pm on the day you plan to dine to conveniently schedule your pickup. (After 5:30 pm only online orders for takeout are accepted.) Park on the street right outside the Ships Inn or pull into the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church parking lot across the street and give the inn a call to let them know you have arrived. Have your credit card ready because dinner will be brought out to you in minutes. Staff at Ships Inn are dedicated to the comfort and pleasure of their guests and will do their best to accommodate special requests, but some of the items on the indoor dining menu simply cannot be prepared as takeout. Ships Inn is still serving in their historic dining rooms. They’ve moved tables to appropriate distances and are taking all precautions to keep guests safe. If you prefer to dine at the restaurant, reservations are more important than ever before. Whichever you choose–dine in or take-out– you’ll be glad you picked Ships Inn. Privilege of Surf from page 7

tled into a career, and then made the usual career mistakes without cost, and enjoyed a rise without the needles of prejudice. He worked hard, undoubtedly, and was rewarded for it with not only money, but those other invisible things that money carries in its pockets: mortgages, credit, health insurance, and stability. Four children is its own privilege. The greatest privilege, the one that he and I enjoy, is time. Everyone on that beach had an afternoon in their lives to bear witness, be it from an afternoon away from the lawnmower or a summer in retirement. More than that, we lived in a time when the water was healthy, the air was clear, and you could buy Spanish truffle dusted potato chips and key lime pie on the drive home. And, even though we live in the time of Covid, we also live in a time (and place) where science and prudence have bought this summer. This afternoon of beach and Kadima was earned by islanders staying in their homes, nurses administering tests, a governor’s restraint, and masks. Our freedom was earned with a collective sacrifice and surrender. Such as we are, we gave ourselves outright in April, May, and June. The beaches would be empty if the refrigerator trucks at the hospital were full. Dad wouldn’t be bringing his daughters to the island, nor would his daughters be bringing Dad. The kadima ball will fall, and then the tent will be put away, cover ups will be found, and we all will head to dinner, then sleep, lulled to the murmuring privilege of surf. The beach reveals the central paradox of life on island. Each summer it is different: Each summer it is the same. The cliffs get steeper, the walk gets shorter, roads and houses are consumed, but at core, the surf, the water, and the sand itself remain the same. Somewhere, in that lucky Dad’s house, hides a Polaroid of all four girls in pigtails, rope bracelets, and sunburns on this same beach. The wheel turns and remains forever still. The privilege of surf had flung us up onto this beach. It removes those years, those troubles, those advantages so that, on an afternoon, the moment hangs high in the air. It won’t stay there long.

Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Dining Out during the Pandemic During the pandemic, Nantucket eateries are taking precautions to protect their guests while they find new ways to serve them their favorite meals. Eateries who have always offered takeout are now doing curbside and home delivery. Fine dining restaurants are offering to-go menus and offering distanced indoor and outdoor dining. Creative and beautiful outdoor café spaces are popping up all over town. There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! At our press time on July 14, Massachusetts is in Phase Three of reopening. This means that some restrictions on restaurants will begin to ease, and several island eateries will start offering distanced indoor dining and outdoor table service in addition to takeout. Under current guidance, tables will be 6-feet apart, groups are limited to six people, and seating at bars will be prohibited. Statewide face covering orders will remain in effect until otherwise noted, requiring workers to wear face covering at all times; customers may remove face covering when dining.

Around Town You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most in-town streets. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.

The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.
