Art is in the Air by C. Oscar Olson Nantucket is an island of Kodak Moments. From Madaket to ‘Sconset and every cobblestone in between, there is a nary a bad angle for the perfect picture. But these days, virtually everybody carries a camera in their pocket. The art and skill that once went in to photography is now mass produced, and even an amateur like myself can snap the one worth 1,000 words. The perfect painting, though, doesn’t come as easily to most of us. Starting Tuesday, June 12, the Art Association of Nantucket proud to be hosting the 7th annual Plein Air Nantucket, an island festival dedicated to the very special art of painting outside. The Plein Air Style of painting took root in the 19th century and was the central feature of French Impressionism. A little less than a century later in 1920, the movement was revived on Nantucket by Frank Swift Chase. Chase taught outdoor painting classes through the early 1950s, and the core group of his regular students went on to found the Artists Association of Nantucket. This event serves to memorialize Chase, and those who participate are entered to win a Frank Swift Chase Award. The award is a juried prize honoring exceptional works. Plein Air Nantucket is open to every island artist from any and photo by Michael Torrisi all skill levels. Those who are looking for fresh air, pristine scenery, and painting with their peers are looking for Plein Air Nantucket. “This year the popular Brant Point plein air paint-out will be held the Wednesday of the festival,” said festival founder Robert Frazier. “Open to all

Summer on Nantucket is filled with momentous occasions. Your best friend from summer camp is getting hitched at First Congregational Church and you’re in charge of getting cigars for all the groomsmen. You and your wife are receiving congratulations on your new bundle of joy that just arrived at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and you dole out cigars to share the good news. Smoking cigars and ceremonious celebrations have long been linked. Cigars are often given as a trophy for “winning or reaching a milestone in your life, and who isn’t winning when you are spending time on Nantucket? Adding a cigar to some of life’s most important moments can also help to create a special bond between those you are sharing this life-changing moment with in your life. Nantucket provides us with a multitude of opportunities to partake in the luxury of a fine cigar.

WEDDING BELLS ARE RINGING Cigars are the perfect way to celebrate time-honored traditions. The first of many traditions for most young people coming of age is when they exchange their wedding vows on this fair isle, then returning to the island at the same time year-after-year to celebrate their anniversaries. Lighting up a fine cigar is symbolic of a man taking his life-long partner, for better or worse, and ceremoniously sealing the deal with a smoke. Guests can enjoy in sharing their sentiments and support of this new partnership by joining in to honor the new couple. This joyous occasion as a form of sharing to celebrate is most grand at a wedding, where people from all over are excited to be on Nantucket to celebrate. Symphony of a Cigar Pairing: Romeo Y Julieta Cigarros 1875 Ever seen a Shakespeare play while on Nantucket? Most are familiar with the love affair between Romeo and Juliet. You may have played the role yourself during that one summer romance with the young lady from the yacht continued on page 21

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Walking Among the Pages Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Have you ever wondered about sand fleas and if they would help you out if you were in a bind? Well, that’s what students from the Nantucket New School’s (NNS) first and sixth grades were thinking about when they dreamed up their latest story creation, Sand Fleas Save the Day. Not to give too much away, Sand Fleas Save the Day is the story of Sandy the sand flea and how she and her sand flea pals rescue Berry, the Great Black-Backed Gull who has found himself in a predicament. Along the way they all learn a moral lesson while also learning something about nature on Nantucket. This story is the result of a year-long collaboration between the NNS first and sixth grades and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF). This is the fourth in a series of this collaboration. Each year starts with me and Seth Engelbourg of LLNF working with the students to teach them about various aspects of nature on the island. We’re hoping to educate the students about what’s in their backyard: the habitats, plant communities, and animals that can be found on the island year-round. After several bi-weekly nature lessons and a field trip or two, we then talk about our favorite nature-based children’s stories. In many of these stories, such as Eric Carle’s The Tiny Seed, nature is personified and a lesson is often learned. There is also some factual information about the nature itself. In The Tiny Seed, for example, we learn about what it takes for a seed to grow. It has to have the right combination and conditions for soil, moisture, and temperature to germinate. Then the tiny plant has to survive predation, trampling, and continued on page 18

June-uary

Sail Endeavor

by Robert P. Barsanti June-uary has come upon us from the east. In this season, the visitors, the brides, and the bachelor parties race to the island with their daffodil swim suits, rent aqua bicycles, and head off to Cisco in cotton fog. When they arrive at the brewery, the young lady has soaked through her “Bride tank top, and everyone else is hoping for a fire. For all of the great blessings Nantucket has in store, the month of June isn’t one of them. In the rest of New England, the skies are clear, the wind is fresh, and the grass has been mowed several times. Golf balls fly out of bounds, the Red Sox are still in first place, and the first roses have bloomed on the wall. On-island, June-uary hangs ten feet over our heads. A brisk and raw easterly wind leaves the island as cold as it was in January. Rain and mist alternate in canceling baseball games, boats, and airline flights. Puddles form, streets flood, and the moorings in the harbor remain empty. The winter that began back in early November stretches the last echoes of its stay deep into the summer. The sun burns through the mist for the occasional hour in the late afternoon, only to get smothered again in blue and gray. The oldest Elm looms over the intersection by the school, and it drips rain on the cars below it. I was momentarily stuck there on Thursday morning and switched on the windshield wipers to clear off the dripping fog. The ceiling had sunk so low that the top of the tree disappeared twenty feet up. Every so often, the designers who plan for summer visitors come up with a rotary for Five Corners. The intersection, they see with practiced eye, can never do for busy times (like August) when the golfers need to get to Miacomet. So, in order to free up traffic for that one month, they would like to eliminate the Coffin elm and replace it with a rotary for beachgoers. So far, the Elm has outlasted school buses, trash trucks, and drunk Maseratis. I hope it can outlast off-island consultants. Those of us who have lived here long know that you never actually put the polar fleece and winter clothes away. Even in August, the sweaters stay continued on page 17

We Are Nantucket Returns to Stage

The island’s past and present meet its future when “We Are Nantucket,” a community engagement program aimed at handing down and continuing the oral histories of Nantucket and its population, will once again be presented as a filmed series of interviews Thursday, June 14 in The Dreamland between Cyrus Peirce Middle School students and prominent, local residents. Based on a book by long-time Nantucket resident and historian Nancy Newhouse, and conceived for the big screen by another life-long islander, Annie Bissinger, The Dreamland is also collaborating with NCTV Channel 18, the Nantucket Public Schools, and Adrienne Lombardi’s Cyrus Peirce Middle School seventh grade English Language Arts class. Following up on the soldout inaugural event held in late-January that included students interviews with Rob Benchly, Nick Duarte, Judy Collatz, Ellie MacVicar, Chuy Partida, Hera Maharjan, Carrie Glidden Riden, Carl Sjolund and Andy Marks, this second presentation will feature interviews conducted by a variety of students familiar and new to the program speaking with: Ginger Andrews, Rocky Fox, Patricia Harding, Sheila Lucey, Gene Mahon, Anita Nettles, Nat Philbrick, Tom Proch, Jeanette Topham, Liz Winship, and Harvey Young.

Sharing stories of the island as well as their own personal anecdotes from over the years, this series of conversations and filmed interviews will be produced for the screen by the staff at NCTV working with the students journalists to “detail the oral histories of the island as told by a cross-section of its older residents to a younger generation of seventh graders. These interviews provide us with an invaluable account of the life, character and legacy of Nantucket,” said Bissinger, who also serves on The Dreamland’s board of directors. Planned to become a twice-annual event, the June 14 screening of the latest series of interviews will be offered to the community at 5 pm for an at the door suggested donation of $10 for adults; $5 for children. “We are so thankful to Annie, Nancy, our own Laura Gallagher Byrne and everyone else involved with this very important program at The Dreamland, said Executive Director Joe Hale. “Their commitment, as well as that of the interviewees, to the health of the Nantucket community is inspiring to say the least, and a great example to the younger generations.” Expected to sell out once again, those interested in attending should reserve their tickets immediately. “Please come and take a glimpse into the life of Nantucket as told by its residents,” added Bissinger. “We guarantee a unique and entertaining understanding of the island through their stories.” The premiere screening at The Dreamland will be followed up by a yet-tobe-announced television debut on NCTV Channel 18.

A Comedic Play about Plays Called by theatre critics “sidesplittingly funny,” and “deeply felt and honestly moving,” It’s Only a Play has just opened on Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s Bennett Hall stage. The plot is simple: It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady; and the playwright’s best friend (for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a tv series) are awaiting the reviews with a photo courtesy Theatre Workshop of Nantucket drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer. It’s prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre—and for comedy. Performances are at 6 pm June 7, 9, 12-16, 26-28, 30, and July 5-7 with 3 pm matinees on Sunday, June 10, 17, and July 1. Tickets to It’s Only a Play are available at theatreworkshop.com and the TWN Box Office: 508-228-4305.

artists, we encourage the public to come and watch us paint – we’ll be there from 10 am until at least 3 pm. We’re also continuing what we call the Wet Wall, where art works that have been completed as part of the festival will be hung at the gallery each day for the public to view and purchase,” added Frazier. Those interested in being a part of the art can sign up starting at 9:30 am on Tuesday, June 12. A registration fee of $30 will qualify each artist to use up to four canvases, 14”x18” or smaller. Every canvas will be stamped by the AAN upon entry. Artists are welcome to set up anywhere on the island, while maintaining respect for signage and private property. The majority of the work should be painted on location, and each piece must be submitted by 3:45 pm on Sunday, June 17 for judging. The award presentation and public reception to follow will be held at 6 pm on Sunday in the Cecilia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery. This free reception is open to the public and all are encouraged to come. Greenhalgh. This One-Day Pop Up is free and open to the public. “The new White Elephant Village Ballroom is such a beautiful location and AAN is delighted to partner with NIR for this combined venture, which is free and open to the public,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “A terrific cross-selection of our artists will be participating, and there will be a few art projects available for children at specific times throughout the day, so we invite you to join us for this great chance to buy affordable art in a welcoming space,” said Greenhalgh.

June-uary from page 7

out where you can wriggle into them on a wet night. The ocean is older than the land, and the ocean is cold and dark. The flowers might rent the roadside, but the ocean owns the sky. Not withstanding the will of the water, the seasons creak into some sort of astronomical change. The first striped bass have swum up the Atlantic Coast, and then leaped into fog-wrapped boats. The songbirds have filled the weeds, and the dog can find dozens of rabbits to chase. On one afternoon, in the few hours when the fog lifted, I found that my backyard had become green. The grass was overrunning its edges, the marsh grass has pushed up to the blackberry hedges and into the looming trees. Life reasserted itself, with firm and productive photosynthetic green. The normal life of natural law may have faded into a gray and brown timeless morass in the winter, but the quiet green work of leaves spread out once again, and brought my backyard life into its usual order. Our lives have sunk deep roots and spread out wide branches—inborn strength will slowly grow, then shove out the weak, the flashy, and the temporary. Since November, I had grown used to the brown and gray of branch and leaf; the quiet, burnt out husk of a landscape that the winter leaves us with. It has its charms, like small red berries hidden among the swaying black branches. The hidden and handsome marsh hides in plain sight—so much so that it is easy to lose sight to what is there

all along. Sometime in the foggy darkness, amid the trickle of afternoon light and occasional Canadian afternoon, the dark leaves unfurled and went about their work. Unbidden, unasked for, uncalled, the trees spread out and declared their dominion. Flowers are different. They push out of the gray and the brown with an flashy insouciance. First, a frail green stalk unfurls amid the mud. Then, in a slow crescendo, a bud emerges and then bursts into loud protest. They cluster in the side yard, protected in a walled-off bed, and burst forth with noise and color. The irises, the daffodils, the tulips draw your attention and your admiration for a weekend of more in their noisy celebration. Then they are gone. The wind takes their petals, their stalks bend to the earth, and the status quo returns in brown earth. But not the trees. The trees stand witness until the first hint of yellow and red unrolls into the heavy shade of leaf and needle. New branches shove into the air, the roots dig deeper into the ground, and biology becomes more stout and stalwart. Long after the noisy protest of the flowers has faded into mist, the trees endure and expand. We live in a time of noise and change. In any given hour, a new bloom emerges in the electric garden. We can stare at each blossom and count out its bloomed life in headlines and re-tweets. Then, as it fades into the mud, another little flower takes its place, only to bloom, die, and be replaced on the next sunny day. Better to be the tree, with thick roped branches and deep-set roots, growing with vegetable strength, and emerging in silent dominance on a foggy morning.

being picked in order to grow enough to reproduce. Examples like this one help the students frame their own story. With examples in mind and many lessons on the flora and fauna of Nantucket, the story ideas take shape around the holidays. Sometime after New Year’s, teams of 6th graders propose their story ideas to the group. They present a general outline of the story, the main characters, and what habitat the story takes place in. There are usually three or four story ideas for the group to vote on. All the students (first and sixth grades), the teachers, as well as Seth and I participate in the vote. The story idea with the most votes is then selected to be made into the finished product by the group.

EXPLORE THE HISTORIC H & NA NATURA AL BEAUTY OF NANTUCKET

This year’s story deviates from the choices of the past few years: it is the first story to take place on the beach. Sand fleas may seem like an unusual choice for a protagonist, however, the team effort they use and their willingness to help other animals (in the story at least) make them great candidates for a tale about helping others in need. Like many of the past stories, aspects of the narrative are worked out as a group with sixth graders and teacher Rachael Sullivan leading the charge. Lots of research goes into the natural history and biology of the flora and fauna incorporated in the story. Everything is as accurate as possible, including the time of day the animals are active, the size ratios of individuals, and what types of species we have on Nantucket. As the narrative of the story takes shape with the sixth graders, the first graders set to work on the illustrations. With the guidance of first grade teacher Brenda Genthner, these six- and seven-year-olds detail the life and death struggles of birds, turtles, caterpillars, and other insects. Using detailed shading techniques, the students are guided by photographs of the animals in the story to get every detail right.

This year, sand fleas were a new creature to everyone involved. A lot of work had to be done on perspective. How big should any one sand flea or a group of sand fleas be? Once all of the illustrations and text are complete and edited, the pieces are all put together. Pages are scanned and laminated and then posted on wooden boards. The boards are set up along the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s walking trail on the short loop. The pages are separated by about 10 to 15 yards or so, encouraging all to take an extra step in nature. Past stories created by this same collaboration have included The Mouse and the Turtle, Carrot the Brave Bunny, and A Caterpillar’s Tale; Life at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. Once the narrative is complete, the story is then translated into Spanish with the help of a translator at the Nantucket Community School. The translation is available at the trail head for anyone to take along with them as they enjoy the story walk. So, are you ready to find out what happens to Berry the Great Black-backed Gull and how exactly sand fleas save the day? Head out to the Linda Loring Nature Foundation at 110 Eel Point Rd. The trail is free and open sunup to sundown every day. Sand Fleas Save the Day will be posted through mid-July, so you have plenty of time to head out when the weather is good.

This particular cigar is a medium bodied blend with oak and coffee flavors that produces an enchanting aroma (similar to the scene set with their brand name). The smoke has cedar and hazelnut undertones with a delicate spiciness. This package offers all the taste but in a pint-sized form, beautifully packaged in a tin of 6 Petit Bullies for easy access and sharing.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT While congratulations should be given to the mom for going through all the trouble of carrying Junior for nine months and birthing the baby on top of that, it is a grand tradition for a new father to pass around cigars after the birth of his child. Who doesn’t want to celebrate that their offspring will be considered a Nantucket native? Centuries ago when cigars where considered a rarity and only for the wealthy elite, they were considered a sign of pride and value that this new child added to the family, especially if it was a son. Luckily nowadays, cigars are readily available for anyone (of legal age, that is) and to celebrate the coming to life of any child of yours! Baby Bliss Cigar Pairing: H. Upmann Reserve by AJ Fernandez 1844 Originating in Cuba back in the mid-1800s, H. Upmann is considered a classic, refined brand of cigar and boasts being among the oldest cigar brands in existence. After a long and storied history, the cigars are produced in Havana for local consumption or in the Dominican Republic for worldwide export. Now there is a new H. Upmann interpretation in town, hailing from Nicaragua with a partnership with AJ Fernandez. Fernandez is known for recreating heritage brands where he reimagines them to satisfy the cigarsmoking consumer trends of today. Think historic Nantucket building refurbished to house the island’s hottest new restaurant of the summer. This cigar is intensely delicious, very complex with medium to full body flavor. Notes of roasted coffee, hazelnut, and cedar are evident with each savoring draw. Considered an ultra-premium cigar, it has an elegant powder blue band, reminiscent of that famous blue box color any gender loves to get as a gift, and has this cigar oozing with ultra-luxury all over it.

PAYING RESPECTS TO

THE

OLD MAN

Your father speaks highly of his old man, reminiscing about days of fishing the Nantucket waters together. You and your dad had many moments yourselves casting a line off the shores of Great Point. This special male bonding time as a youngster shouldn’t be lost as you are a dad now and truly understand the sacrifices he made in order to give you the life you had a child. A cigar is a special way to show respect to the man who helped raise you. This meaningful gesture can also be a satisfying way to share a stogie with the old man when sometimes you just need to smoke a cigar to relax, unwind, and take in the peace and serenity that summer days on Nantucket have to offer you. Dad’s Delight Cigar Pairing: Aging Room Quattro F55 Expressivo Small Batch The masterminds behind the Aging Room brand are skilled brand owner Rafael Nodal and cigar maker Jochi Blanco. These cigars are made with limited batches of tobacco leaves that are too small for regular cigar production. This makes these small batch cigars highly unique, hence in more demand. Also making this cigar of interest to cigar connoisseurs is the unusual, rarely continued on page 24

buttery avocado, thin-sliced radish, and tangy pickled carrots and cauliflower shine just as bright. A sweet and sour lemon-honey vinaigrette brings everything together in beautiful, bite-sized harmony. The Lobster Cobb is built to share and build-your-own. Bacon, egg, avocado, and bleu cheese sit separately in neat piles atop lettuce with a generous portion of sweet lobster front and center. It’s big enough to pile on separate plates and share with the table. When the ocean view Lobster Cobb starts calling your name and you decide you’ve had enough lunch, then head for the surf. Didn’t bring your beach gear? Have no fear! The Beach Shop is attached adjacent to the restaurant and offers everything from towels, toys, sunscreen, and Sandbar apparel. There are even equipment rentals and changing rooms. The evening we spent at Sandbar, a live band was pumping out classics until 6 pm, and our entrees were right on queue. We had been craving Fish Tacos (cover photo) for quite a while, and these did not disappoint. Two fresh, flaky cod fillets came wrapped in white corn tortillas, resting on a powerful house coleslaw beside a slice of avocado and peppery sliced radish. A squeeze of lime made every bite just right. We hadn’t had a good Cuban sandwich since our visit to Key West a few years back, so Manny’s Cubano was a must for us. The sandwich is pressed and grilled and the crunchy, buttery crust hides the goodness within. Layers of smokey sliced ham, mojo pork, and melty muenster cheese made a mouth-watering marriage with a tangy pickle in every bite. It came with thick cut, golden brown, sumptuCubano ously seasoned house potato chips. Chef Emmanuel “Manny” Rojas, former Chef de Cuisine at Nautilus and also of The Pearl, insisted we try his Clam Po-Boy, and he was so right. Orleans classic with a spark of the southwest. There wasn’t a bite left on the plate. As the sun was going down, the Roasted Half Chicken came right on time. It was beautifully plated over house potato salad and roasted carrots, and you could hear the crisp of the skin just by looking at it. The chicken was deliciously seasoned and moist, the carrots were tender and sweet. The potato salad combined summertime flavors of dill and horseradish, and hidden throughout were more of those snappy pickled vegetables (an idea we might have to borrow for our next barbecue!). This dish brought deliciously Clam Po-Boy different contrasts in temperature and texture and was our favorite for the evening. It is very telling of an establishment when the staff are as happy as the customers. Our waitress, Nicole, greeted us with a sunny smile and was wearing it throughout our meal. All in all, Sandbar at The Jetties is the perfect spot for just about everything. The scenery, service, and food are all top-notch. And be sure to keep the Jetties on your radar: rumors are going around of a menu expanRoasted Half Chicken sion at the end of June. We know we’ll be back.

FOR THE

COURSE

OF

LIFE

“You win some; you lose some” is a phrase well-known on the golf course. After a day on the links, the winner of the day’s match will reflect on their achievement by sharing cigars at the 19th hole. Smoking a cigar with your golfing compadres exudes a sign of respect, not just to the gift bearer, but also to the others with whom you are smoking — respect that is earned for hitting a hole-in-one and respect also given for those who show up in your weekly foursome no matter the weather. The excitement of the win is celebrated by all and sharing this happiness with a great smoke. 19th Hole Cigar Pairing: Perdomo Reserve Champagne 10th Anniversary Perdomo originated in Cuba, like most cigar brands, and its company headquarters are now Miami, FL, based for the cigars that are made in Nicaragua. This premium handmade 5 pack of cigars comes in a pint sized, convenient durable tin that offers a cigar for each of your foursome and one left over to share with a new friend you meet at the clubhouse. This unique cigar has a filler made from extensively aged tobacco. The binder is a stunning, triple fermented Connecticut shade wrapper, which helps to make this approachable mild cigar easy going a perennial crowd pleaser. Creamy undertones with a sweetness almost like honey, these delicate beauties are like the fine bubbles found in the glass of a tête de cuvee Champagne! Whatever the occasion you decide to smoke a cigar, remember a few key elements of cigar smoking etiquette. Never put your burning cigar down on the ground, especially on the lawn or greens. Be sure to bring enough to share with the whole group. And when you are finished with your cigar, be sure it is fully extinguished and dispose of it properly. Cheers to your next milestone and the memorable stogie that is paired with it!
