Conducting an Orchestra Writing Process of Alex Marzano-Lesnevich by Catherine Macallister Lovers of literature rejoice! The Eighth Annual Nantucket Book Festival is just around the corner. With events for all ages, more than 50 distinguished authors will call Nantucket home for three days from June 13 to 16, as they share their works with readers and writers. This year more than 35 events will be held over this weekend: everything from author panels to children’s story times with a variety of free events and a handful of ticketed events. This year’s festival is welcoming a wide variety of authors including some frequent festival guests like Elin Hildebrand with her new historical fiction book Summer of ‘69, Nat Philbrick with his historical non-fiction book, In the Hurricane’s Eye, and Blue Balliet’s young adult mystery, Out of the Wild Night, to name a few. The festival will also welcome Alexandria (Alex) MarzanoLesnevich author of The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir, a non-fiction narrative that explores the true-crime murder and case of a young boy, the complex nature of his killer, and the author’s experience and realizations as a law student studying this case. Through the deeply personal and powerful account of the past, the reader learns the ways in which Marzano-Lesnevich’s own personal trauma is woven into this murder case through stories and memories. Immense research of more than 30,000 documents, court hearings and memories culminate in the intense, provocative non-fiction memoir that seeks to understand the way in which we must try to understand ourselves and connect to the larger picture of what we encounter in our lives. Readers will find themselves swept into the Nantucket of summers past, seeing the changes of the island through the eyes of Marzano-Lesnevich, who vacationed here as a child. “I love Mitchell’s recalls Marzano-Lesnevich

ISLAND PAIRINGS

A Literary Feast by Jenny Benzie, Advanced Sommelier of Épernay The sun is finally brightly shining, and you have your favorite beach blanket ready to go in your newly monogrammed tote from Blue Beetle. Your pile of recommended summer reads by local bookworm Tim Ehrenberg and your friends at Nantucket Bookworks and Mitchell’s Book Corner are conveniently located tableside for easy access on your way out the door to spend a relaxing afternoon at Surfside Beach. Reading a book takes our mind on an adventure like none we could ever possibly have ourselves. The words we read are the heart and soul of someone else...in a sense, we get a taste of what the writer is trying to tell us, and, if the “meal” is good, we continue to read more. The same can be said about enjoying a glass of wine and feasting on what the winemaker has prepared. In honor of the 8th annual Nantucket Book Festival, here are some perfect pairings of notable reads from some of this year’s literary luminaries, along with a liquid refreshment to enjoy while celebrating your feast of words.

THE QUEEN

OF

SUMMER BEACH READS

Local resident Elin Hilderbrand is all about community. As you turn the pages of any of her books, you feel as though you are on Nantucket and part of the summer social scene. Summer of ’69 is her first historical novel and details the lives of four siblings who typically summer on Nantucket yet are derailed due to the conflicts of the era in which it is based. Politics aside, this will surely be a page-turner as you read the family secrets and issues that unfold. Celebrating the release of this locally based saga should be toasted with none other than a rosé wine from our island’s winery. Nantucket Vineyard Rosé is a beautiful wine made in the style of Provence, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. The wine is grown and made in Oregon as collaboration between the team at Nantucket Vineyard and Barrel 42 in Southern Oregon. This mouthwatering rosé will take you from beach to patio and back again and hopefully will last as long as your novel. continued on page 10

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket

Hedge of Roses by Robert P. Barsanti We got lucky. My son graduated high school on an electric blue sky day that some father of the bride bought with his soul and a platinum American Express card. The lilacs had popped, as had the irises. The ducks have grown and are waddling across Madaket Road. Every other pickup truck is pulling a trailer filled with ten thousand dollars of mowing equipment, and summer has settled into the cooler air. The graduates stepped to the tick-tock of Pomp and Circumstance into Mary P. Walker Auditorium. Soon enough, the wheel will spin again, the ball will fall on white, and the tops of the elm trees will disappear into the fog. Not today. Today, despite the finger-wagging of a principal who dearly wanted to be swinging a ruler, the auditorium broke into hoots and roars. A graduate’s name was called; she stepped forward and got her diploma and then a handshake from the superintendent and another from the principal. While her family cried and screamed and hollered. She may not know how lucky she is. But someone in the audience from Lithuania, from Jamaica, from Salvador, knew how fortunate he was to be sitting on Nantucket watching her get a diploma. She had taken a step to being a nurse, or a teacher, or a cop; the door had opened and she could walk through to a life of paychecks, health insurance, and eight hours of sleep. We got lucky, they screamed at the impacted principal. We got lucky. Today, 136 young people, still in two colors, were lined up in six rows and accepted their diplomas in 45 minutes. A lucky three of their family got seats up close, but the rest sat in the back, or lined up against the walls, or climbed the stairs to the control room, or played with their kids up near the windows. Today, the Mary P. Walker Auditorium was filled beyond capacity and we were lucky to be there. These graduates have been on stage for most of their lives. Even in a class of 136, they have been inside the hedge of the community for years. We have seen the games and the plays and the concerts for years. We watched

New Discoveries by Catherine Macallister Visitors of the Nantucket Whaling Museum will have the chance to explore a new exhibit featuring the work of early American artists, some that has been forgotten or not been available to public for decades. The Williams Forsyth gallery opens this Saturday, June 15 and is the newest addition to the Whaling Museum. Their inaugural exhibit, Two Hundred Years of American Art on Nantucket: Pairings from the NHA and Private Collections will display about forty works by 19th and 20th century artists. William Trost Richards’ painting “Nantucket Shore is one of the many featured paintings that will be on display. Other artists include Wendell Macy, George Inness, Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin, Anne Ramsdell Congdon. Guest curator for the exhibit, Dr. Anne Classen Knutson is an art historian and summer resident of over 30 years. Dr. Knutson was first approached in February 2018 to curate the exhibition describing her findings and research as a “revelation. “So much has not been done, she remarks, surprised at the amount of early American artists that found their way to Nantucket but whose paintings and histories have been lost. The exhibit will feature some of the best pieces from the NHA as well as pieces from private collections, found by the Friends of NHA and Dr. Knutson herself. The private and public pieces will be paired and configured to tell a story that brings museumgoers through 200 years of local art by exceptional artists. Dr. Knutson hopes that she has revealed “interesting and new stories within the exhibit. The journey through the gallery will include themes like the ‘Sconset area or “artists retreat, portraits of Coffin family members that Dr. Knutson has reunited and needlework pieces by two young girls. Additionally, the exhibit draws attention to “the number of remarkable women who painted on Nantucket and who people don’t know about, something that Dr. Knutson hopes to continue researching. The biggest take away from this new exhibit? Dr. Knutson hopes that people will be “thinking more art historically and looking more closely at the paintings and viewers will consider “light, atmosphere and, space. Previously Dr. Knutson has presented shows at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The High Museum, and the Guggenheim, and while the Williams Forsyth Gallery will be a smaller venue, guests of the exhibit can expect the same caliber of research and maybe “a little experiment. Going beyond the traditional biographical information provided for art pieces, Dr. Knutson hopes to inspire viewers to “think outside the box and make connections between paired paintings as they make their way through the gallery. Through her careful work, Dr. Knutson will be shining a light on pieces of forgotten Nantucket history and creating connections to prestigious American artists who spent time on the Island. The Williams Forsyth Gallery, named in honor of NHA Board President Kelly Williams and her husband Andrew Forsyth, will complete what will now be known as the Fine Arts Wing of the Museum. The Whaling Museum, located at 13 Broad Street, is open daily 9am-5pm and features unique exhibitions and presentations that capture the history behind Nantucket.

Stay Classy Not Trashy Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Whether you are a year round resident, a seasonal homeowner, or a summer visitor renting for a week, Nantucket’s waste disposal system affects you. Did you know that the island used to get rid of much of its trash by openly burning it at the Madaket landfill? Those days may be long gone, but we are still trying to settle on the best solution to a trashy problem. Back in 1986, Town officials selected composting over shipping waste off-island for incineration. The Rhode Island firm, Waste Options, currently manages the solid waste composting facility on the island. Household trash is run through a composting digester and turned into compost over the course of several days. The compost is then available (for free) at the entrance to the dump. Nantucketers have been separating out recycling since 1996: first by the various plastics, tin, glass, paper (newspaper vs office paper), and cardboard. This mandatory recycling program won accolades in 2009 when the island was recognized by a national advocacy group for obtaining a 92% recycling rate: a rate, at the time, higher than the previous winner, San Francisco. A lot has changed about recycling since then. Most notable, China has stopped taking a lot of recyclables, including most papers and many plastics. Many communities around the country have suspended their recycling programs—a devastating environmental blow. However, Nantucket is looking to how we can make changes and remain sustainable long term. One solution is an overhaul to our current waste system. This year, the Town hired Graeme Durovich as the Town’s DPW recycling solid waste coordinator. Since coming on board, she has been working to streamline the landfill operations and recycling program. Graeme is also

This book intertwines stories that take you through the heartbreak of the AIDS crisis in the modern world through its outbreak and legacy, along with the characters fight to find goodness in spite of this epidemic. In celebration of Pride month, this book is most apropos served with Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot. This gorgeous, rich, mouth-filling wine offers expressive aromas of blueberry and plum. The finish is long, velvety and full of rich, satisfying tannin. This layered wine is perfect with the layers of the stories found in this book. Rebecca Makkai and Tim Ehrenberg will be having a conversation about her book at the Methodist Church on Saturday, June 15 at noon (free event).

MYSTERIOUS COWBOY Author Craig Johnson has written a series of fictional mystery novels about Sheriff Walt Longmire based in Wyoming. His books have become the basis for Longmire, the hit Netflix original drama. Rich with landscape, characters, and history of the West, you will enjoy the exciting action and hard lessons learned when the stakes are high in each of these novels. A good cowboy-based read would not be complete without a snifter of Balcones Single Malt Texas Whisky. This classic edition is the first of a handful of spirits made by this producer to create something original and authentic in the heart of Waco, Texas. Emphasizing grain to glass by using Texas grown malted barley, this hard to find spirit will have you hailing “yippee-ki-yay with every sip and turn of the page with this pairing. Meet Craig Johnson at the Methodist Church on Friday, June 14 at 11 am.

The waters of Nantucket give us more than fresh fish to eat, but are we destroying the ecosystem that provides so much? Sylvia Earle, legendary oceanographer and deep-sea explorer, chronicles in her book Blue Hope how the ocean’s ecosystems are being destroyed by climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Amazing photography combine with inspirational insights in this tribute to Mother Ocean. A wine to sip while enjoying this book about the sea is Robert-Denogent Macon Villages “Les Sardines.â€? Made from 100% Chardonnay, this wine hails from the Mâconnais region of southern Burgundy in France. The forty-year old grapes are grown on limestone soil and have been a work of many generations. As stewards of the land, this wine is made with minimal intervention and aged two winters on oak before release. It offers a tremendous value, with wonderful richness on the palate and impressive complexity. Enjoy a conversation with Sylvia Earle and Michael Schulder, of the Wavemaker podcast, at the Methodist Church on Saturday, June 15 at 3pm With glass in one hand and book in the other, we raise a toast to the authors and winemakers who create the stories that we allow into our lives and hope to share with others along the way. Cheers!

them scoop ice cream, mow lawns, and rent bicycles. We have been to the birthday parties and fishing derbies and victory parades. We have been lucky in that. We are also lucky to be in a community that will put its money behind its kids. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are handed to the graduates over the course of this last week. We give money for tools, we give money for trade schools and for pilots and veterinarians and for gardeners. Today, we are on Nantucket and there is work. Those twenty young people who chose employment could be sure that, as long as there was a bed for them, there would be three jobs and another calling every night. Lawns need cutting, brunch needs serving, and rooms need vacuuming. If you could work, and if you could stay, and if you stayed lucky, there would be money, work, and a life out here on the sandbar. The average salary of a bartender on Nantucket exceeds the median salary of a 34-year-old Middlebury College graduate. Today. Next year, Nantucket will graduate more than 150 students for the first time ever. Nothing on the island was built for this many graduates and family members, save for the football field. Next year, everyone will be staring at the sky, hoping for more luck. But not today. Today, under a timeless, still blue sky, parties will blossom in back yards and front rooms. The privileged will light cigars, the rest of us will drink beers and lean back in the chair. The debris dribbles off of the table: cold cuts, celery stalks, and chocolate cake with cream cheese. The empty wine bottles stand idle in a box, while the others float in melting ice with the seltzer and the Bud Lite. Against the wall, an eight-foot banner proclaims “Congratulations.” The young men and women sit in a circle, planning and plotting, under the blessing. But the old people know who the sign is really for. Those lucky ones stand together behind the buffet, wine glass in one hand, rabbit’s foot in the other. Some nights the baby never stopped crying. Some days the dark and angry angels harried him. Some days were punctuated with slammed doors and thrown bags. But, every time he fell on the ice, he got up. Every time he went out to a party, he came back. Every time he fell asleep, he woke up. The grades dipped and soared, the attendance stayed steady, and the finish line passed under his feet. They look at him, alive, whole, well, and bless themselves: “We got lucky.” Someday, not today, we won’t be lucky. The sharks and orcas will fin the beaches and hunt the seals. The phone calls will stop and the hammers will stop and the mowers will stop. Then the yard sales will sell those expensive mowers, and the surfboards, and the t-shirts before everything goes to the dump and everyone goes on the boat. The wind will increase, the water will rise, and the sky will descend. Not today. And on that day, Nantucketers will look to each other. They will reach to each other, as they always have, and pull. When the water drains and the sky clears, they will return to the work of the island: each other. None of those graduates will ever be alone Today, the graduates dispersed from the stage with five roses. They gave them to the people who have helped them the most. They knit themselves to us with red buds, green stems, and appreciation. Grandparents, parents, friends, and the woodshop instructor all were bound together in a hedge of roses. Today, we got lucky.

Egan Maritime is excited to present its annual sold-out program, An Evening of Shipwreck Stories & Sea Shanties is returning to the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum on Wednesday, June 19. Doors will open to this lively, fun evening program at 5:30 pm, the performance begins at 6 pm. Led by Egan’s Manager of Maritime Education, Evan Schwanfelder, a talented group of island actors and performers will bring to life the dramatic, captivating tales of ill-fated vessels navigating Nantucket’s unforgivable shoals, the brave rescues by the island’s heroic lifesavers, and some unsolved, chilling mysteries at sea. Through theatrical performance and sensational storytelling, patrons will be enchanted, enthralled, and engrossed in the stories that comprise Nantucket’s seafaring legacy and maritime heritage. Schwanfelder is curating a new line-up of shipwreck stories and sea shanties, while also interweaving irreplaceable tales and treasured songs. “We are looking forward to keeping the traditions of the event alive and holding onto the stories that everyone knows and loves. But we are eager to reveal the new tales and song additions at this special annual event,” Schwanfelder explained. Join Egan Maritime for an unforgettable night of storytelling, an opportunity to sing shanties passed through generations of salty mariners, and a chance to experience the island’s maritime heritage in an authentic way at a memorable venue. Tickets are $40 ($30 for members of Egan Maritime) at 508-228-2505 or at eganmaritime.org. Libations and lite fare will be served when the doors open at 5:30pm. Egan Maritime’s Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum is located at 158 Polpis Road, just 3.5 miles from Nantucket Town. A free shuttle ride is available daily to and from the Museum from Visitor’s Services during regular Museum hours: Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays noon to 5 pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-18, and free to children under 6.

Writing Process from page 3

fondly, remembering the kindness of both Mitchell’s Book Corner and Bookworks owners who supplied so many of the inspirational stories for the then ten-year-old. Writing in their book about summers on Nantucket, Marzano-Lesnevich describes walking around downtown “…holding a book in front of me to read while I walk.” It was during these summers as a child and teenager that “set me off on this exploration [of writing and reading]” says Marzano-Lesnevich. From a childhood spent on the Atheneum green, to an adult with an award-winning book, MarzanoLesnevich is returning to Nantucket from Portland, Maine where they are currently teaching at Bowdoin College as an Assistant Professor of English. The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir, has been awarded the 2018 Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Memoir, The 2018 Chautauqua Prize, Prix France Inter-JDD as well as numerous mentions and accolades in prestigious media outlets. The task of writing, researching and fine–tuning this book was no easy feat, using the phrase “conducting of an orchestra,” the author described how pieces had to omitted, amped up, and toned down. Masterfully written, beautifully layered, and full of difficult subject matter, the book presents memories in their most real and most raw form. It is through these memories, both imagined and personal, that we see the core of MarzanoLesnevich’s work. When asked what is most meaningful about the process of being a writer and being a reader, Marzano-Lesnevich simply answers continued on page 19

“connection,” something that is evident to the reader as they move through the book, wanting to understand more about each discovery made by the narrator. The 10-year process of creating this narrative, and the writing ability needed to make this book happen is key to the success of the book. Hoping to touch on craft and process during the panel at the Festival, Marzano-Lesnevich speaks to process: “The book teaches you how to write it. The book was a process of discovery that informed the voice of the narrator,” says Marzano-Lesnevich, “…trusting that I was headed to the unknown and unknowable, a bit of a mystery and a bit of a map.” Marzano-Lesnevich is “honored and thrilled” to have the opportunity to share this writing journey and more about The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir this Saturday, June 15. Through memories, real accounts, and documents, Marzano-Lesnevich creates a gripping hybrid of memoir and non-fiction that explores difficult content with a focus on understanding the truth. Marzano-Lesnevich recalls a favorite quote by author Martha Cooley of The Archivist who writes, “With little effort, anything can be shown to connect with anything else: existence is infinitely crossed referenced,” a quote that stayed with Marzano-Lesnevich and revealed so much about The Fact of a Body even before the inception of the non-fiction work. In the forward, Marzano-Lesnevich writes “ But more than that, much more than that, it is about how we understand our lives, the past and each other. To do this, we all make stories.” The art of being able to tell the story of the past and present while also “examining larger social issues, larger cultural issues,” is relevant to the author’s current award winning book and central to other pieces that can be found in places like The New York Times and TriQuarterly Online, as well as forthcoming pieces and even a new book. Be sure to make your way to Alex Marzano-Lesnevich’s panel with Amy Jenness at 1pm on Saturday, June 15 in the Atheneum Great Hall, where a conversation about The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir will be happening. Whether you are an avid reader, an accomplished writer, or just beginning your own writing journey, there is something to be said about this ever-changing little island of Nantucket where so many writers have found inspiration. While change may be inevitable, Marzano-Lesnevich perfectly sums up returning to Nantucket: “Despite the changes, going there is like going home.”

Featured Restaurant: Ship’s Inn

A Fixture on the Fine Dining Scene by Carl Oscar Olson Classics never go out of style. Vintage automobiles, memorable movies, and good tunes from back in the day remain steadfast in our minds for a reason. Our adoration of them will go on, much like our love for long standing establishments like The Ship’s Inn: bringing the island the best in service, accommodations, cocktails, and, of course, food for nearly 100 years. Located just two blocks from historic Main Street, the inn has sat proudly on Fair Street since 1831. Originally the home of renown sea captain Obed Starbuck, it was built after one of the most successful whaling trips in history. After a 14-month journey at sea, Starbuck brought home more than 2,200 barrels of whale oil, a treasure worth well over 1.2 million dollars today. The prize was divided between the ship’s owner, the crew, and Obed, giving him the opportunity to build his house, farm the island, and become a well respected member of the Nantucket Community. The Ship’s Inn opened its doors to the public in 1913, starting an ongoing tradition of superior accommodations and cuisine. The rest is history, and it’s a tradition we are excited to savor today. The dining room was bustling when we arrived at the end of a sunny island Friday, a surprise after a rainy early June, but also an indication at what was coming our way. The setting is cozy, elegant, and quintessential Old Nantucket. It was easy to feel transported through time as we walked through the room to take our seats. Bresaola With a hand-picked wine list, small batch spirits, beer, and specialty cocktails, you’ve got options on where to begin. We started with some of the bar’s favorite drinks, and we were sure glad we did (cover photo). Bartender Grant ages his own in-house, so the Barrel-Aged Boulevardier is a must-try. Charred oak rounds out Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel whiskey, Campari, and Antica sweet vermouth. It roars onto the palate with a bright start, then transforms into deep, dark complexity. It’s served chilled in a rocks glass with a hand-cut ice cube. On the spicier side of things is the Ranger. House jalapeño-infused Grey Goose Vodka is mixed with olive juice for a southwestern spin on a Martini. It’s savory and complex with some jalapeño hang time, so Grant adds a blue cheese stuffed olive to help tame the heat. Flavors of fresh cucumber and sweet strawberry shine in the Sea Lion, a

concoction of Beefeater Pink gin, muddled cucumber, lime juice, and honey. A Prosecco float adds some fizz and dries out the finish. Good to the last drop. While we perused the menu and sipped our drinks, we snacked on a selection of fresh bread with Grilled Sea Scallops creamy whipped butter. The corn bread has a hint of sweetness and is light as a feather, no mealy texture here. Ship’s Inn rolls are browned beautifully and bite sized, and their raisin wheat bread is delightfully different. When it’s time to order, you can choose from a dozen diverse starters and mains, not to mention Chef Gottwald’s specials, which always offer something new. Peter, our server for the evening, provided all the attention to detail we needed as well as some great recommendations. He suggested the Cauliflower Soup, and it was a splendid place to start. The whole vegetable is steamed then pureed into a silky smooth, subtly sweet mixture. Add in some real Vermont cheddar and it is simply sublime—clean cauliflower coming through with every spoonful. We moved on to Sauteed Wild Mushrooms, and they are an earthy, bright delight with every bite. A bed Sauteed Wild Mushrooms of warm goat

cheese compliments their wild flavor adding just enough creamy zest to stand out, and a tamarind sauce enhances every morsel. One of the special starters of the evening was new to us, so we just could not pass it up. Bresaola, the Prosciutto of beef, is chilled and air-dried up to 3 months, giving way to some of the richest and most flavorful cuts of meat imaginable. It’s sliced thin and served with slivers of parmesan and an arugula salad well-dressed in a terrific truffle vinaigrette. It was so good, we only wish it would make a more regular appearance on the menu. Reliably delicious and our favorite first of the evening are the Grilled Sea Scallops. The pair are served in a shell over a complex lobster vinaigrette with a dollop of black truffle hollandaise that just went on and on. They are tender, sweet, and succulent, and two were a perfect tantalizing tease. We really loved the sizes of all of these starters — just enough to get us Rigatoni with Duck Bolognese excited about the second course without overdoing our appetites. The mains are generously plated, so there’s little chance you’ll leave hungry. Chef Mark Gottwald has been at the helm of Ship’s Inn for as long as we can remember, and he’s as passionate now as he was in the beginning. His is the kind of high caliber care you see reflected in every dish that comes out of his kitchen. When he’s not at the inn you can usually find him on the water, often catching the dinner he’ll be serving his guests later that night. Heads started to turn our way as our entrees came out of the kitchen, and for good reason. The aromas were irresistible. There was a remarkable amount of tender meat in the Rigatoni with Duck Bolognese, and this is a very good thing. A perfect portion of al dente pasta is smothered in the rich red sauce, and on top of it all are laid triangles of a fun feta salata to balance out the richness. Boneless Beef Short Ribs We like to try at least one vegetarian option when possible, and the Vegetarian Risotto served at Ship’s Inn would satisfy even the most ferocious carnivore. It’s

steeped in a luscious puddle of white truffle butter and topped with fresh grilled squash and mushrooms. Mingling with the rice are flavorful leeks, carrot, mushrooms, asparagus, and more. The dish is beautifully balanced and easy on the eyes, too. Another special of the evening was Spanish Prawns (cover photo). These are not a common menu item on Nantucket or elsewhere, so we jump on them when they make an appearance. Tender, toothsome, and grilled to perfection, the display was dazzling. They sat atop a sublime citrus coulis and were served with sticky rice, sautéed asparagus, and snow pea tips. All of it was light, fresh, and flawless. There was no disagreement among us about the Boneless Beef Short Ribs being the star of the show. Tender beyond words and topped with crispy fried onion, this heartiest of meals shares the plate with a mild horseradish spaetzle. And don’t underestimate the power of a garnish, because the aroma from the sprig of fresh rosemary tied it all together. We often wait until the end of a meal to consider dessert, but at Ship’s Inn that would be a serious mistake. One of the restaurant’s many claims to fame are their Soufflés — those labor intensive and temperamental French masterpieces that so few dare to make. They take about 30 minutes to prepare, so they need to be ordered with the main course. Believe us: you’ll be glad you did. The night we dined, there were two flavors. The Grand Marnier Soufflé is more of a standard with the Flourless Chocolate Souffle Cake essence of orange provided by the fine French Cognac. It is undoubtedly delicious; however, it’s the Chocolate Soufflé that really blew us away. It is impossibly light and airy with the richest, deepest chocolate flavor imaginable. Both come with a table side creme anglaise, a light custardy cream sauce that is just magic. There are other dessert options if you don’t plan ahead, though. The Sorbet is silky smooth and so refreshing, bursting with fruity flavor for a light, sweet finish. The Flourless Chocolate Souffle Cake is deep, dark, and tempting, boasting a scoop of homemade, roasty toasty pistachio ice cream on the side. And their Vanilla Creme Brûlée is perfect with its signature crack when we broke through the caramelized sugar on top. We love the contrast between the crispy, sugary shell and the velvety smooth custard within. We are so grateful for long-standing, island institutions like Ship’s Inn. May they continue to serve our community the finest fare available for another 100 years!

working with what we have, ensuring that the composting digester works to its fullest potential, which may mean limiting some of what is put in there. That’s meant some big changes for how we separate our recycling as well as our trash as of February 1, 2019. It’s been a lot for some Nantucket residents to get used to, but it’s what needs to happen for the systems to work properly. “What we’re trying to do is reduce the amount of material that’s going into the landfill,” Rob McNeil, DPW director said. “The only stuff that’s currently getting landfilled is stuff that’s thrown in the composter that shouldn’t be there.” Here are the new categories:

RECYCLING We recycle glass, plastic, tin/aluminum, and cardboard. For the cardboard, this is labelled as “shipping boxes.” That’s corrugated, heavy duty cardboard which must be broken down and flattened before put down the shoot. Plastic has multiple shoots, but they are all comingled. You no longer have to separate the plastics out by number, it all goes together. Tin is still in the same place it’s always been. Remember, if you have cans with deposits (beer and soda), you can drop them off in the shed across the parking lot from the recycle center. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts separate the cans and reap the rewards. It’s financially beneficial for the island scouting program and allows them to be autonomous from the national system and supports many of their community service activities. Glass is still glass, but is now moved to a bin closer to the recycling area.

COMPOSTABLE This is one of our new categories. It is everything that will go into the compost digester: all food scraps, paper, pizza boxes, newspaper, pet waste, cooking oil, etc. It can be brought in a clear plastic trash bag (like the former “household trash”), but it is preferred to be in paper bags. Everything in this dumpster will go into the digester, where it will be continued on page 23

turned into compost over the course of several days.

NON-RECYCLABLE/NON-COMPOSTABLE This is all the rest. Plastic bags, Styrofoam, milk cartons, things of mixed materials, diapers, wipes, plastic wrap, etc. The Town’s website has lots of information on the new regulations including a great infographic on the categories downloadable here: nantucketma.gov/242/Solid-Waste-Recycling. For some, this is an annoying change in the way they do a daily task. For others, it’s part of a cultural shift in how we view our waste. Separating the waste out like this you realize just how much garbage you produce that is not degradable or recyclable. For me, it’s made me rethink plastic wrap, especially, but other packaging as well. Many island businesses are working to reduce their use of plastics. While we already have a ban on plastic bags, restaurants and stores are working to improve their takeout containers to be more sustainable. Compostable options are more attractive than recyclable plastics. This is, in part, due to the passing of a single-use plastic ban at Special Town Meeting last October. As part of this, shops and restaurants have just over a year to take certain single-use plastic items, including cups, straws, water bottles, off their shelves. Unfortunately for us, the trash isn’t just relegated to the dump. There has been an increase in litter, debris, and landscape waste in many of our public areas and conservation lands. Enter the Nantucket Clean Team. This dedicated non-profit group of volunteers picks up litter on the island from April to November. Every Saturday morning starting at 8am, volunteers meet at a pre-determined location to pick up litter for an hour. In the course of six+ months, the Clean Team has picked up over four tons of litter and debris. Follow their Facebook page to get location information. All are welcome! While the Clean Team has done amazing work, the litter has kept piling up. This past April, a new idea was hatched to give financial incentive to help clean up the island. The Nantucket Litter Derby encouraged people to form teams to pick up trash wherever they wanted on the morning of April 14th. The team with the heaviest trash would win a cash prize. The after party was at Cisco Brewery, so fun was had by all after a morning of garbage collection. That one day effort by 24 teams resulted in the collection of more than two tons of garbage! Highlights include five tires, a washer and dryer, bags of sheet rock, wood, and bicycles! The event was so successful, the organizers already picked a date for next year: Saturday, April 5th, 2020. Nantucket has a unique opportunity as an island; we can work to be sustainable and take care of our waste ourselves. First, follow the new regulations with all of your waste. Second, reduce your use of plastics and non-compostable items. Third, 112 Pleasant Street reuse what you do have! Why buy new, when you can reuse? This goes Zero Main Street for containers, construction 888-225-4636 waste/lumber, and clothing. Let’s rewww.capecodfive.com think our waste stream and keep our island clean and sustainable.
