The 4th of July on Nantucket is filled with fun activities this year. The day’s events will be different from what you may recall pre-pandemic, but there will still be lots of old-fashioned fun finished off with fireworks! Starting at 8:30 am and continuing till 12:30 pm, the Nantucket Farmers & Artisans Market presented by Sustainable Nantucket will be set up along Cambridge Street and North Union Street, with local vendors offering jewelry, crafts, sweets, artwork, and more and island farmers selling their fresh harvests. Food trucks will be on Federal Street between Main and India from 10 am till noon, and in the Atheneum Garden on India Street, the Nantucket Island Center for Entrepreneurs will host a showcase of local start-ups. Stop by to meet the business owners, learn about their ventures, and get some free goodies! Downtown storefronts will be specially adorned for July 4th, and everyone can participate in voting for the store that should get the People’s Choice award from the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce. At 10 am, history teacher Peter Panchy will host a panel discussion called "Spotlight on Democracy," focusing on the weakening of our democracy and how continued on page 21

Happy 50th Birthday!
Half a century ago, on July 4, 1972, Patty Claflin opened her doors to readers at Nantucket Bookworks on Federal Street (where the Corner Table and Nantucket Culinary Center are now). Patty remembers that the first book she sold fifty years ago was written by Nietzsche. Nine years later, she moved her shop to Broad Street where Bookworks still stands today. At the turn of the century, on New Year's Eve in the year 2000, she officially passed the torch to current owner Wendy Hudson and the rest, as they say, is history! Many island residents and visitors hold Nantucket Bookworks dear to their heart. This independent bookstore with its broad selection of books, knowledgeable staff, enchanting children’s room, and eclectic gifts is an island ico. Happy birthday to Bookworks and happy reading to us all!

It seems the heavier the world gets, the more it needs lightness, and Live Lightly is a motto of Native Shoes, a company dedicated to designing footwear that is fun and comfortable and has a low climate impact and can— and has been!—recycled and repurposed into places for children to play. There’s only one Native Shoes store in the United States, and it’s right here on Straight Wharf. Founder Kyle Housman visited our island every summer as child, bicycling out to Surfside with his parents and enjoying the natural beauty here. Decades later, when he decided in 2018 to open the first store in the USA for his Vancouver-based company Native Shoes, he knew Nantucket was the perfect fit. Native Shoes have simple, modern designs that are comfortable and durable for all ages and pursuits. Ideal for island life—boating, fishing, gardening, walking the dogs, going to the beach, outfitting kids for summer camp. There are ten different styles to choose from, including walking shoes, deck shoes, sandals, and slipon mules that pack easily for travel. Sizes range from 3 months to mens 13. There’s even a shoe with tougher treads designed for kids who love to play hard.

The Battle Doesn’t End Unless You Surrender by Robert P. Barsanti
Nobody gave us America. At best it is a trophy won from years of war. This war may involve guns and Redcoats, or marches and firehoses, or tear gas and pink hats, but we have always been at war with enemies foreign and domestic. The battles swing from Europe and Asia to Pennsylvania and Chicago, but those battles continue. The labor doesn’t end. On Nantucket, the only war we see on the Fourth of July involves fire trucks and squirt guns. The bicycles get decorated with their best bunting, the blueberry pies are consumed, and the boats slowly and drunkenly shift out into the Sound for the best view of the fireworks. And yet, at barbecues and Yacht Club buffet tables, we fight over masks, over shots, over guns, over women’s bodies, and over whether the country can even continue. It has always been thus. When we believe in a peaceful past, we fool ourselves into silence, retreat, and despair. At no point in American history were we free from ugly and brutal fights. The lies we tell the children hide the deaths of union workers, slaves, and poor people. Nantucket, the Quaker “island of love” was spared most of the headlines, but no whaler would consider the below deck on a whale ship “peaceful.” Nor have we been spared the scourge of racism. That past has been happily buried under fresh sod and bordered with Belgian block. Though hidden, the truth remains: the pleasure and peace of the Fourth of July has been hard won through labor. It should be celebrated. We live on an island, in a state, where the Union and the unions won. Everyone who got the day off should head to the beach and thank all of the fighters in the past who brought the wealth that we enjoy. That wealth might be a six-pack in a cooler or an acre under air on Monomoy, but it came as a prize of war. Nobody gave it to us. Our ancestors took it. If we sleep on it, those prizes can be stolen back. The last few years should have woken the sleepers. Nobody can say, now, that “this is unbelievable.” We live in the shadow of the Supreme Court, in the stain of a corrupt presidency, and in the echoing call of bullhorns and drums. It’s baby bird season, and it has been a busy one so far. It’s a good time to revisit what to do when you have an encounter with a nest or baby bird and how you can best help these vulnerable little ones. At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation we frequently get calls about what to do when a bird “falls out of the nest” or the mother “abandons” the nest. The quick and dirty answer to every question is to let it be. Let nature take its course. It may be sad or difficult to witness, but it’s the best course of action for you and for the birds. This time of year is when many young birds are ready to spread their wings and attempt flight, but some may fall before they soar. It’s not uncommon to find young birds away from their nests during spring and summer. As fledglings, that’s exactly what they’re supposed to do. Intervening, taking them into your home or making an artificial nest for them would ultimately do more harm than good. It's a normal part of a bird's development, and though these chicks might appear abandoned, they’re likely under surveillance by their nearby parents. If there is a nest in your yard, steer clear. It may be tempting to check on the nest every day, but try to refrain from doing so. Keep activity (human and animal) away from the nest area if possible. Once recent call asked about a nest on their front porch. They ended up locking the front door and having everyone in the family use the garage door to avoid disturbing the nest. Most of the birds we encounter on Nantucket are protected under the Migratory Bird Act of 1918. It is illegal to take and possess eggs, nests, and bird parts (including feathers) without a federal permit. It’s illegal to move or even to touch an active bird nest. A few years ago we had a question about a nest on a deck umbrella. The best course of action is to let the birds fledge (leave the nest) and then remove the empty nest. It won’t be for the entire summer. A benefit of having a known nest in your yard is the ability to contribute some data. NestWatch, a citizen science project founded in 1965 at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, collects data in North America from community members continued on page 23

NHA’s Hadwen House Reopened for 2022
The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will welcome visitors back to their stunning property on upper Main Street: the Hadwen House. This historic property features several exhibitions, including one focused on Nantucket lightship baskets for the second year since the NHA’s formal affiliation with the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. On the second floor of the Hadwen House, Weaving Nantucket’s Past into Its Future: The Craft Continues showcases more than 100 different Nantucket lightship baskets of many sizes, exploring artistry and innovation from land-based origins to nineteenth-century lightships into the twenty-first century. Kathleen Myers will curate the exhibition. And buy your tickets now to the Baskets & Bubbly Garden Party on July 24, the fun summer fundraiser for the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum which will have an online auction component this year. The first floor of Hadwen House allows guests to explore the Decorative Arts Collection of the NHA, including fine art and furniture, tall clocks, and ceramics as well as an eclectic display of curiously carved artifacts. Highlights include Nantucket-made furniture, such as an exquisite wooden center table with more than 1300 pieces of veneer and Guardian lion candlesticks brought to Nantucket from Canton, China, upon a trading voyage by Captain James Cary (1777-1812) as a gift to his wife. In addition to the lightship baskets, the second floor of Hadwen House also presents an exhibit of historic maps and nautical charts, appropriately titled Mapping Nantucket. Within this exhibit, the selection of maps on display will help visitors understand what mapmakers, both on- and off-island, have chosen to highlight over time. The Hadwen House, 96 Main Street, is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm, through October 10. Learn more, buy tickets, and plan your visit today at NHA.org. The NHA’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.

Art Shows Indoors, Outdoors, & Online
Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is delighted to announce the opening of the Modern Epic Gigantic Artworks in the Big Gallery on Friday, July 1, with a festive reception and Ribbon Cutting with the Chamber of Commerce at 5 P.M. Located on the second floor of the Thomas Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf, the building was home to AAN’s Kenneth Taylor Galleries from 1945 to 1988. “Affectionately named the Big Gallery as a tribute to AAN’s Little Gallery (which occupied the small shingled building next door to the Macy Warehouse for about fifty years), this is truly the first time in many years that we’ve been able to host such large works for sale,” said AAN artistic director and curator Robert Frazier. “This additional space, with its lofty ceilings and extra-large windows, lends itself beautifully to the gigantic art that so many of our artist members brought in to showcase for this exhibition,” said Frazier. “We invited our artists to bring in some of their largest pieces and nothing will be under 24 x 24 inches, interesting to note, there is also a strong abstract presence,” added Frazier. Modern Epic Gigantic Artworks will be on display from Friday July 1 to August 1, at the Big Gallery, located upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf. Open seven days a week, 10 am to 5 pm. The following day, Saturday, July 2, the Artists Association will be hosting it’s annual Sidewalk Art Show. A beloved tradition that dates back to 1930, AAN’s Sidewalk Art Show is the oldest of its kind in the U.S. and a wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with the artists in the casual setting of the Atheneum Garden. AAN is also featuring the From Moors To Shore exhibition in the award-winning Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street until July 18 and an online exhibit entitled On Shore, On the Moors through July 13. To learn more about the AAN, visit nantucketarts.org. For details on AAN’s 2022 carefully crafted programs, classes, and workshops, call 508-228-0722

Limerick Challenge
The famous series of limericks dates back about a century: you can read the first four in the challenge at Yesterdaysisland.com/limerick-challenge Every year we issue a new challenge to our readers to continue the saga. In 2020, we ran a pandemic series, with 24 stanzas submitted by readers. This summer we are starting with a lengthy submission by the legendary poet The Portly Bard (you can read more of his fine work at Yesterdaysisland.com). To submit your own limericks, email them to us at yi@nantucket.net; we’ll be pleased to share them with our print and digital readers.
The Song of the Nantucket Bucket Pa's a legend unnamed in Nantucket, now reknowned for his cash in a bucket, whose endowed daughter Nan met a devious man who was mining for "gold" where Pa stuck it. After faking romance with fair Nan, he convinced her to rob her old man and once Nan had snuck it a trip to Pawtucket with the cash—to dump Nan—was his plan. She'd return as the prodigal daughter to bemoan all her error had taught her and be welcomed with grace to her father's embrace like a lamb being saved from its slaughter, And the man would set sail with Pa's money in search of another young honey and a tropical clime where he'd while away time getting used to the rain turning sunny.
But far wiser than he had suspected, the old man had the scam well detected "Keeping Nan will be fine, but that cash is all mine," he told both as he left them dejected. Then forsaking his Yesterday's Isle, though he said it was just for a while, Pa moved to Manhasset with pail and cash asset to begin empty-nesting in style. But he'd angered Miss Nan and her man who then said "We're amending your plan, as price for misgiving try emptiness living," as away to New Haven they ran With Pa's pail and his cash in their car, though before they had gotten too far, to create a false trail they divested the pail and instead used an old earthen jar. But then Pa took a bit of offense and surprisingly used common sense. continued on page 15

Limerick Challenge from page 13
He reported the crime and then wasted no time in declaring his legal intents to recover his now famous pail and the cash it contained without fail, to strike Nan from his will, and have her foot the bill, and then serve out a sentence in jail while he'd cleverly manage to seal an incredible marketing deal for the "Piggy Pail" banks he inscribed with his thanks for his Nantucket fame so surreal: "Store your dream not your cash in this bucket. Mine for gold that you've earned when you've struck it. Though it might take a while, just remember to smile and be glad when you find your Nantucket."
Post Scriptum Pa has since, in a rare show of kindness, admitting to love being blindness, said Nan was to blame but able to claim by birth her contrary inclined-ness. Although humor continues unfolding, and the Bank of Nantucket is holding
all Pa's cash, his fair Nan now again seeks a man though no scoundrel that Pa would be scolding.

And as for his pail getting older (and legend of rhyme that's extolled her), the size of the tale now proves without fail the Whaling Museum should hold her. And Pa is convinced he's enabled Nantucket to proudly be labeled "Historical Isle of Magical Style Where Stories and Stays Become Fabled." And he thinks he belongs here among all the art Joyce and Johnson have hung on each gallery wall as the works that recall how the songs of Nantucket are sung by the talented women and men re-creating again and again enchantment and glory, the landscape and story, that Nantucket forever has been. And Pa thinks our fine dining cuisine —the Dune, Topper's, and Galley Beach scene— should feature tossed salad befitting his ballad -"Pa's Bucket of Nantucket Green."

Native Shoes are constructed with materials that are lightweight, soft, and flexible and don’t absorb water or odors. They are hand-washable and come in a rainbow of colors, bold patterns, and eye-catching bling. The Stars & Stripes Jeffersons (one blue shoe with white stars and the other sporting red-and-white stripes) in adult and children’s sizes are fun for the fourth, and Native Shoes has partnered with Disney to introduce playful Mickey and Minnie patterns. The shop on Straight Wharf even has an exclusive Nantucket Collection: designs that are available nowhere else. And the company, with their shoes and their activism, are devoted to helping the planet. Retail manager Beth Lloyd-Thomas explained how Native Shoes—the company and the products—“make it easy to live lightly.” Two of the top com pany goals of Native Shoes are to do the right thing and to practice “tiny activism,” which they aptly describe as “creating a better world one tiny step at a time.” They encourage innovative ideas (“ask more what ifs”), and although they are serious about their endeavors, they don’t want to take themselves too seriously. This environmentally aware company is doing all they can “to have less of a footprint on our world,” Beth explained, “We try to do the kind thing for our environment and for people.” Native Shoes Remix™ Project is the brand’s flagship sustainability initiative. Through a proprietary regrind process, the unique composition of Native Shoes is transformed into a versatile and colorful material that is used in the creation of comfortable seating, bouncy playground flooring, insulation, and other products using recycled Native Shoes. So far more than 35,000 shoes have been converted to help in the construction of five new playgrounds. The weekend of August 13

to better sustain it. This roundtable will feature journalists David Gregory of CNN; Susan Glasser, Washington columnist for the New Yorker; and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent for the New York Times. This event is free but tickets are required: reserve your free ticket from the link at nantucketdreamland.org/shows/showing-today On lower Main Street near the Lt. Max Wagner Memorial Fountain—adorned by members of the Nantucket Garden Club—students from the Nantucket Community Music Center will perform. You might even be able to sing along! Contemporaneous with the downtown events, there will be family fun presented by the Town of Nantucket Department of Culture and Tourism at Children’s Beach, Harbor View Way, walking distance from Main Street. Island musician PJ Moody starts the Children’s Beach events at 10 am with a rendition of our National Anthem and other patriotic songs. At 10:30, kids will be entertained by Lizza and her NanPuppets. At 11 am, PJ Moody returns to the bandstand to play more music, and at 11:30 am, children can ride in the parade of decorated bicycles. Also during the morning, from 10 am to noon, a Matt Fee Tea Toss will be held by the bandstand, along with a cornhole tournament and a photo booth. At high noon on Main Street, the Nantucket Fire Department will compete with the Boynton Lane Reserves to see who can fill a 55-gallon container with water first. All are welcome to watch the dueling fire trucks compete, but there will be no audience participation this year, so leave all water balloons, soakers, and other water fighting items at home and cheer on your favorite. There is a chance (if one of the participants happens to miss the container) that you might get a little wet, so be prepared. But no promises and no public participation! Classic games for children will be held at Children’s Beach starting at 5pm on July 4th, including 3-legged races, wheelbarrow races, potato sack races, and a tug-o-war. The Independence Day Fireworks Display will be held Monday night, July 4th at 9 pm, with the fireworks shot from a barge just offshore. The show will last about 25 minutes. In case of rain or bad weather, the fireworks will be postponed till Tuesday, July 5th at 9 pm.

The Battle Doesn’t End from page 7
the dogs will tell us, the fireworks are just the playechoes of gunfire. A number of years ago, I was asked by an administrator what my legacy would be. To be charitable, he assumed that I was thinking of a placid obituary in the I&M, where I had been a tough but fair teacher who always supported his students and was loved by the community. In these days, after more than 35 years of teaching, I think about the same question although it no longer puzzles me. I am proud of the fighters. Dorothy Stover is one of those fighters. The battle over topless bathing does not seen consequential in light of the current headlines about the environment, guns, and abortion. The New York Post, The Globe, and NPR are snickering behind their baseball caps. The less shy deliver their darts and stings through letters, email, and TikTok to Dorothy Stover: “Hooters” by the Sound, perhaps. Yet, in spite of the locker room talk and the eye-rolls, the article passed town meeting. Following that, if it is approved by the Attorney General and pronounced legal, it will be the law of the sand. I don’t know how many women will take advantage of this new freedom. Sunburn remains a challenge, as do sand, jellyfish, and dripping sticky ice cream cones. Nonetheless, topless bathing walks a small step towards equality. A woman will be able to choose what she wears or doesn’t wear, without regard to sniffling male prudery. Through mockery and sneering, Dorothy pushed an article through the town meeting and now it is here. The victory isn’t permanent. Some member of my generation has, right now, drafted a “decency on the beach” by-law which will appear in town government.
June 30-July 6, 2022
Such a by-law probably has square inches that must be covered and may even, as the old high school dress code had it, have a required length. Perhaps, even, a moral squad will walk Nobadeer with rulers and hand out tickets. The battle doesn’t end, unless you surrender. When I finally hang up the bow ties, I hope my legacy will be filled with troublemakers and fighters. I hope that they upset the selectmen, annoy the administration, and afflict the comfortable. An older generation makes peace with its sins and its evasions. Having the anger and insouciance of youth, the students become not just adults, but troublemaking Americans. May they come to school committee meetings, union elections, and the U.S. Congress. And may they be (rhetorically) well armed. I never taught anyone to follow instructions. On this “island of love” as the Quakers called it, the old folks in their silk and finery left us with the ideal of “labor.” Labor, to William Rotch and David Joy, was not the hard work of a whale ship or a farm. When you labored, you argued. Politely, respectfully, among equals but with force, you endeavored to bring people “to the light.” Elihu Coleman, young troublemaker and carpenter, argued the Quakers into abolishing slavery on island in 1733. Labor wasn’t easy then, nor is it now. America was founded on labor. From every moment of its conception, to our present moment, we have been laboring for the truth. The labor does not yield immediate or permanent results. But as we stand around with our beers and our sparklers on this Fourth of July, let’s have a thought to the work and the fight that brought us to this moment. The labor will continue—there will be no rest from labor—but perhaps our children will stand on this same island fifty years from now and recognize the fights and the arguments that were won. Hopefully, none of them will be wearing tops.

based on nesting observations in home yards and neighborhood parks. For almost 60 years, citizens who find a nest have recorded photo by Christine Treanor information on how many eggs or nestlings are present and other observations. They then send the data to NestWatch, which analyzes the trends. Check out the project website to learn more and how to become an observer. “But what if I find a baby bird on the ground?” If you leave it alone, the parents will likely come and feed it. In many species, fledglings usually do spend a few days on the ground or in low branches, working things out. This is just normal fledgling behavior. You might
Vol. 52 No. 6 • YesterdaysIsland.com want to keep an eye on it for an hour or so, just to make sure the parents are caring for it. Many bird species such as robins, jays, crows, and owls leave the nest and spend as many as two to five days on the ground before they can fly. This is a normal and vital part of the young birds’ development. While they are on the ground, the birds are cared for and protected by their parents and are taught vital life skills (finding food, identifying predators, flying). Do not pick up the bird! Taking these birds into captivity denies them the opportunity to learn skills they need to survive in the wild. Although it may seem “safer” to raise young birds in captivity, birds (and other wild animals) raised without the benefit of learning from their parents only have a minimal chance of survival when released. Unless a bird is injured, it is essential to leave them outside to

learn from their parents. Right now, it is also important not to touch or otherwise handle any bird that may seem sick or injured. The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been found throughout North America and has been documented on Nantucket. We’re still learning more about it, but it is better to be safe and leave the birds alone. If you have questions specific to injured wildlife you may find on-island, we are fortunate to have the Nantucket Wildlife Response Taskforce which is made up of local conservation organizations as well as NISHA and Offshore Animal Hospital. That group recommends that all incidents related to marine animals should be directed to the Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket and all other calls should be directed to Offshore Animal Hospital. Staff at those organizations will either respond directly, contact the appropriate people to respond, or in some cases indicate no response is needed or possible. What can you do to help Nantucket bird life? Let Mother Nature take care of the situation. She can be pretty cruel, though. One estimate is that only 30% of baby songbirds survive their first year. Baby birds are an important source of food for a large number of animals and other birds: hawks, snakes and many more. Some animals feed others: that’s just the way it is. If you have a cat, please keep it indoors. Outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year. If you want to help birds overall, create a bird-friendly habitat in your yard. Water features, native plants, shade, and no insecticides are top of the list. The National Wildlife Federation has a great handout for other suggestions. It’s wonderful to admire these creatures in their natural habitat. Get out into nature and observe, take pictures, and enjoy. Go on a guided bird walk. Let’s help protect their habitat and ensure clean water and native vegetation. Help support one of your local conservation and wildlife organizations. The work they do protecting habitat helps ensure population success in the future and educated us all about our native wildlife.

and 14, Beth will be hosting a community-wide event at the Nantucket store, where people are invited to bring their old shoes—any brand—to be recycled and get a 10% off coupon on a new pair of Native Shoes. Bloom is another innovative program to help the environment that Native Shoes has launched. This involves Rise Technology, a manufacturing process that incorporates repurposed toxic algae swept from lakes and freshwater ecosystems into the lightweight EVA upper of shoes in their Bloom Collection. The effect is to clean up to 80L of water and 50m3 of air per pair! In addition to these actions to help secure a positive future for people and planet, over the past two years, Native Shoes has been working with a group of third-party experts to understand their climate footprint and how they can live more lightly on the planet. Their iconic Jefferson is already one of the lowest-impact shoes on the market, clocking in at just 3.85kg CO2e per pair. Every time you buy a pair of Native Shoes, you’re saying no to higher impact options, with footprints of 10, 15 or even 20kg CO2e. Native Shoes strives to share their dream with others in the footwear industry: to one day create a shoe with a footprint of less than 2kg CO2e per pair. Not only can customers feel good about buying Native Shoes—Native Shoes feel good! Comfortable, lightweight, and breathable, they’re ideal for summer fun. They go easily from land to sea (they’re ideal beach and boat shoes), as Beth commented, Native Shoes “are happiest by the water.” Sized for children and for adults, the Jefferson is a Native Shoes classic and is also available as Jefferson Bloom, made with the company’s Rise by Bloom technology. Ava Bloom is their slip-on mule that helps to clean waterways with every step. The new line of Native Shoes sandals in five different styles are available in the Nantucket store, along with all the Native Shoes styles. As sustainable as they are stylish, Native Shoes are a must-have for summer fun for the whole family on Nantucket Island. Featured Restaurant: Dune
Inventive, Inspired, and Seriously Good by C. Oscar Olson
The old adage suggests saving the best for last, and there’s certainly wisdom in that. The best should be studied and savored. The best takes time to truly understand and appreciate. But time is fleeting, which is why we enjoyed the best as our first Featured Restaurant of this summer season. Located in the heart of town at 20 Broad Street, Dune is always fun, friendly, and fresh. Three distinct dining rooms offer feelings of relaxed sophistication, with loads of light when the sun is still shining or comfortably lit lounging while dining after dark. What’s more, the restaurant is complete with a breezy covered patio area just alongside, perfect for alfresco food and drink no matter the weather. This summer, Chef Michael Getter himself installed a bigger, better outdoor bar. With seating for seven and space for more lavish libations, there has never been a better time to dine at Dune. We not only enjoyed our meal but also took in some of the best people-watching Nantucket has to offer. We try to revisit Dune again and again throughout the summer season and beyond. The menu is as fluid and everchanging as the ocean that surrounds us, and we would be fools not to keep up with it. There are so many marvelous meals to be had at this season’s start—plus a few of our old favorites—we couldn’t wait to see what new creations were being offered. There were a few cold dishes to tame the early summer swelter on the hot evening we dined, so we took full advantage. To start, we took in the beautiful Bartlett’s Farm Tomato Salad (cover photo). Sweet, succulent chunks of honeydew melon mingle with ripe red tomatoes and mild Spanish olives, while red onion and a zesty vinaigrette tie it all together. The briny zest from Cricket Creek feta, a dairy farm House-Made Mozzarella
located in Western Massachusetts, adds just the right amount of salt. Chef Getter’s House-Made Mozzarella gets its kicks from peppery arugula with a subtly sweet, spicy, and sour rhubarbpepper jam. We loved the fruity and savory crunch from dried strawberries and crispy prosciutto, the earthy elements from fennel and almonds brought balTuna Tartare ance to it all. You wouldn’t believe the smokey char infused into the Grilled Asparagus and Crab Salad. The ethereally sweet seafood is plated beautifully with dabs of lavender yogurt, slices of citrus, and a light lemon gel. Tarragon and an avocado cream add lingering richness. We love the calamari at Dune, and the best part about it are the slight changes from one season to the next. This year the Crispy Rhode Island Calamari is served lightly breaded, flash fried, and perfectly tender with tangy giardiniera vegetables to balance the richness. It sits atop an herbal basil aioli with fresh baby basil on top, with jalapeno slices because some like it hot. On the night we dined, we were thrilled to hear the Tuna Tartare special was back. Its cool creaminess was constrasted by crisps of cracker and puffed sesame rice, while the baby cilantro on top livened every bite. Don’t miss the slight spice from the sauce underneath it all. Our favorite first of the night was the Wild Gulf Shrimp Tostada. The plate was spread with a black bean puree and dotted with an achiote crema, while the most amazing mix of ingredients was resting on the crispy, crunchy corn tortilla: superb shrimp, pickled red cabbage, queso fresco, and chunks of surprisingly smoky pineapple. Since their opening in 2009, Dune has been consistently rated one of the island’s best restaurants. And for good reason! Chef Getter runs a tight ship with an impeccable crew of staff, but he simply couldn’t make the kitchen magic happen without his Chef de Cuisine Joseph Ranstatler. Having honed his skills at the Culinary Institute of America, he’s been a crucial part of what makes Dune delicious since 2013. Wild Gulf Shrimp Tostada

Chef/Owner Michael Getter has a passion and love for his work that is rare, and his genius with food is pared with a serious talent with wine. He is the recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for his skills as a Sommelier, and his cuisine has been widely praised by internationally-known connoisseurs and critics. Years of accolades have not gone to his head: Chef Getter is kind and humble Grilled Asparagus and Crab Salad and his hospitality is reflected by his waitstaff who make every guest feel welcome. Most nights Chefs Getter and Ranstatler add inspired specials based on fresh ingredients that are in-season. Lobster, a summer seaside staple, was the special on the night we dined. Delicate and refined, this dish offered a myriad of flavors. Fresh summer squash, local herbs, cucumber, and a squeeze of lime was all this dish needed to sing its soft, sweet and savory song of summer. The classic porkchop may seem hard to elevate, that is until you dine at Dune. Their Grilled HerCrispy Rhode Island Calamari itage Porkchop is coated with a passionfruit teriyaki and served alongside lemongrass fried rice peppered with bits of Chinese sausage. Verdant bok choy add a fresh crunch while pickled red cabbage pops in every bite. Chef Getter is full of surprises, so it took us time to decipher what puree was on the plate: a slow roasted sunchoke that was sweet and nutty and was a wonderful stand-in for classic applesauce accompaniment . Sensational Pan-Seared Maine Sea Scallops were served over a bright zucchini risotto packed with parmesan and preserved lemon. Perfectly prepared, their impeccable sear crackled alongside rich flecks of pancetta while a maitake vinaigrette brought every flavor to life. Without question, our favorite main of the evening was Dune’s Grilled Prime SirLobster

loin Steak Frites. Medium rare with a strong sear, the meat was melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. The potatoes served alongside were browned yet so fluffy and flavorful, and the tarragon ranch dressing on the “chophouse” salad made this dish a steakhouse classic to die for. Everything we tried was a balancing act of taste and temperature, texture, color, and more. There is a certain unique and relaxed elegance about Dune that is unmatched elsewhere on Nantucket. Of course dessert was no less delicious and not to be Pan-Seared Maine Sea Scallops missed. We cooled the lingering heat with the Gelato selection of the night: three unique scoops with incredible depth flavored with rich chocolate, classic vanilla, and nutty pistachio. The Pot de Creme is borderline sinful in its dark, dense, silkiness. It’s topped with a dollop of otherworldly whipped cream and crumbles of a salty sweet chocolate-peanut medley. Pair it with a cup of coffee for the real grand finale. A feast for the eyes and everything else, the Strawberry Shortcake was a real showstopper. The rhubarb jam reappears with fresh strawberries, ladyfinger-like shortcake, and sweet nectarines while sprigs of baby basil add a contrast we didn't know we needed. Even the whipped cream was enhanced with marscarpone and lime zest. If you’re aiming for just one dining experience to remember this summer, we urge you to make it Dune. The elements all come together both on the plate and the atmosphere around you. The service is unbeatable, the location is great, and the food is not to be missed. Grilled Prime Sirloin Steak Frites
